The strongly coupled phase of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is studied here by resorting to a T-matrix formulation in which the medium is seen as a nonideal gas of quasiparticles (quarks, antiquarks, and gluons) interacting nonpertubatively. In the temperature range under study, (1-5)Tc, where Tc is the temperature of deconfinement, the interactions are expected to be strong enough to generate bound states. The dissociation temperature of such binary bound states is thus computed here. The more the quasiparticles involved in the binary system are heavy, the more the bound state is likely to survive significantly above Tc. Then the QGP equations of state at zero and small baryonic potential are computed for Nf = 2 and Nf = 2 + 1 by resorting to the Dashen, Ma, and Bernstein formulation of statistical mechanics. Thermoelectric effects in graphene are considered theoretically with particular attention paid to the role of resonant scattering on impurities. Using the T-matrix method we calculate the impurity resonant states and the momentum relaxation time due to scattering on impurities. The Boltzmann kinetic equation is used to determine the thermoelectric coefficients. It is shown that the resonant impurity states near the Fermi level give rise to a resonant enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient and figure of merit ZT. The Wiedemann-Franz ratio deviates from that known for ordinary metals, where this ratio is constant and equal to the Lorentz number. This deviation appears for small chemical potentials and in the vicinity of the resonant states. In the limit of a constant relaxation time, this ratio has been calculated analytically for μ = 0. The density of states Q(E) of graphene is investigated numerically and within the self-consistent T-matrix approximation in the presence of vacancies within the tight binding model. The focus is on compensated disorder, where the concentration of vacancies nA and nB in both sublattices is the same. Formally, this model belongs to the chiral symmetry class BDI. The nonlinear sigma model predicts for BDI a Gade-type singularity Q(E) ~ ∣E∣-1 exp[-∣log(E)∣-1/x]. Our numerical data are comparable to this result in a preasymptotic regime that gives way, however, at even lower energies to Q(E) ~ E-1∣log(E)∣-x, 1 ≤ x < 2. We take this finding as evidence that, similar to the case of dirty d-wave superconductors, generic bipartite random hopping models may also exhibit unconventional (strong-coupling) fixed points for certain kinds of randomly placed scatterers if these are strong enough. Using the conventional T-matrix approach, we discuss gapped phases in one-, two-, and three-dimensional (3D) spin systems (both with and without a long-range magnetic order) with bond disorder and with weakly interacting bosonic elementary excitations. This work is motivated by recent experimental and theoretical activity in spin-liquid-like systems with disorder and in the disordered interacting boson problem. In particular, we apply our theory to both paramagnetic low-field and fully polarized high-field phases in dimerized spin-½ systems and in integer-spin magnets with large single-ion easy-plane anisotropy V with disorder in exchange coupling constants (and/or V). The elementary excitation spectrum and the density of states are calculated in the first order in defects concentration c ⪡ 1. In 2D and 3D systems, the scattering on defects leads to a finite damping of all propagating excitations in the band except for states lying near its edges. We demonstrate that the analytical approach is inapplicable for states near the band edges and our numerical calculations reveal their localized nature. We find that the damping of propagating excitations can be much more pronounced in considered systems than in magnetically ordered gapless magnets with impurities. In ID systems, the disorder leads to localization of all states in the band, while those lying far from the band edges (short-wavelength excitations) can took like conventional wave packets. The scattering of two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions from local spin-orbit interactions with an origin in dilute concentrations of physisorbed atomic species on graphene is theoretically investigated. The hybridization between graphene and the adatoms'orbitals lifts spin and valley degeneracies of the pristine host material, giving rise to rich spin-orbit coupling mechanisms with features determined by the exact adsorption position on the honeycomb lattice-bridge, hollow, or top position-and the adatoms'outer-shell orbital type. Effective graphene-only Hamiltonians are derived from symmetry considerations, while a microscopic tight-binding approach connects effective low-energy couplings and graphene-adatom hybridization parameters. Within the T-matrix formalism, a theory for (spin-dependent) scattering events involving graphene's charge carriers, and the spin-orbit active adatoms is developed. Spin currents associated with intravalley and intervalley scattering are found to tend to oppose each other. We establish that under certain conditions, hollow-position adatoms give rise to the spin Hall effect, through skew scattering, while top-position adatoms induce transverse charge currents via trigonal potential scattering. We also identify the critical Fermi energy range where the spin Hall effect is dramatically enhanced, and the associated transverse spin currents can be reversed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider theoretically the transport properties of a spinless resonant electronic level coupled to strongly dissipative leads, in the regime of circuit impedance near the resistance quantum. Using the Luttinger liquid analogy, one obtains an effective Hamiltonian expressed in terms of interacting Majorana fermions, in which all environmental degrees of freedom (leads and electromagnetic modes) are encapsulated in a single fermionic bath. General transport equations for this system are then derived in terms of the Majorana T-matrix. A perturbative treatment of the Majorana interaction term yields the appearance of a marginal, linear dependence of the conductance on temperature when the system is tuned to its quantum critical point, in agreement with recent experimental observations. We investigate in detail the different crossovers involved in the problem, and analyze the role of the interaction terms in the transport scaling functions. In particular, we show that single barrier scaling applies when the system is slightly tuned away from its Majorana critical point, strengthening the general picture of dynamical Coulomb blockade. We determine the thermodynamic properties and the spectral function for a homogeneous two-dimensional Fermi gas in the normal state using the Luttinger-Ward, or self-consistent T-matrix, approach. The density equation of state deviates strongly from that of the ideal Fermi gas even for moderate interactions, and our calculations suggest that temperature has a pronounced effect on the pressure in the crossover from weak to strong coupling, consistent with recent experiments. We also compute the superfluid transition temperature for a finite system in the crossover region. There is a pronounced pseudogap regime above the transition temperature: the spectral function shows a Bogoliubov-like dispersion with backbending, and the density of states is significantly suppressed near the chemical potential. We study the dynamics of charm quarks in the partonic medium and its implication for the di-electron spectra in high-energy heavy ion collisions. The charm quarks traversing a thermal medium are simulated by the relativistic Langevin equation for elastic scattering of charm quarks by thermal partons in an expanding fireball. The transport coefficients of the charm quarks are calculated by the in-medium T-matrix method, where a static heavy quark potential is used with parameters fitted by the lattice QCD results. The di-electron invariant mass spectra are computed in the most central collisions and are compared to the STAR data. The angular correlations of di-electrons are almost the same in p + p and Au + Au collisions in the mass range 1.1 < M < 2.5GeV/c² with a back-to-back feature. This means that the angular correlation is intact even with medium interaction at the energy of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We address conservation laws associated with current, momentum, and energy and show how they can be satisfied within many body theories which focus on pair correlations. Of interest are two well known T-matrix theories which represent many body theories which incorporate pairing in the normal state. The first of these is associated with the Nozieres Schmitt-Rink theory, while the second involves the T matrix of a BCS-Leggett-like state as identified by Kadanoff and Martin. T-matrix theories begin with an ansatz for the single particle self energy and are to be distinguished from Φ-derivable theories which introduce an ansatz for a particular contribution to the thermodynamical potential. Conservation laws are equivalent to Ward identities which we address in some detail here. Although Φ-derivable theories are often referred to as "conserving theories," a consequence of this work is the demonstration that these two T-matrix approaches similarly can be made to obey all conservation laws. We examine how the universality of two-nucleon interactions evolved using similarity renormalization group (SRG) transformations correlates with T-matrix equivalence, with the ultimate goal of gaining insight into universality for three-nucleon forces. With sufficient running of the SRG flow equations, the low-energy matrix elements of different realistic potentials evolve to a universal form. Because these potentials are fit to low-energy data, they are (approximately) phase equivalent only up to a certain energy, and we find universality in evolved potentials up to the corresponding momentum. More generally we find universality in local energy regions, reflecting a local decoupling by the SRG. The further requirements for universality in evolved potential matrix elements are explored using two simple alternative potentials. We see evidence that in addition to predicting the same observables, common long-range potentials (i.e., explicit pion physics) is required for universality in the potential matrix elements after SRG flow. In agreement with observations made previously for Vlowk evolution, regions of universal potential matrix elements are restricted to where half-on-shell T-matrix equivalence holds. We theoretically study the effect of a nonmagnetic impurity in heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 within a coherent three-dimensional Anderson lattice model and the T-matrix approximation approach. By considering two known possible pairing symmetry candidates dx2-y2 and dxy, we find that although both total density of states exhibit a similar V-shaped gaplike feature, only dx2-y2-wave pairing symmetry gives rise to robust intragap impurity resonance states reflected by the resonance peaks near the Fermi energy in the local density of states. These features can be readily probed by scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, and are proposed to shed light on the pairing symmetry and provide hints on the microscopic mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in the Ce-based heavy fermion superconductors. In the representation space approach a useful analytical expression for the integral transform of the Coulomb Green's function by the Hankel function is constructed via Sturmian representation of the bound-state Coulomb Green's function. This integral transform is exploited to construct off-shell Jost solutions for motion in Coulomb and Coulomb plus separable interactions in the maximal reduced form. The expressions for the corresponding off-shell T matrices are also constructed by using a modified relation between the off-shell physical solution and the T matrix that does not involve the potential explicitly. Finally, off-shell T matrices are computed to examine the role of the Coulomb interaction in proton-proton scattering in the ¹S0 channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By employing the T-matrix approach, we investigate a nonmagnetic impurity located on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators, where the time-reversal symmetry is preserved. It is shown that the images of the local density of states (LDOS) around the single impurity have dip-hump structures with six-fold symmetry at different bias voltages. The peaks are produced by quasiparticle interference, while the local minima at the backscattering wave vectors are due to the absence of backscatterings. With increasing the bias voltage, the peaks and dips move forward to the location of the impurity. These dips at the backscattering wave vectors in the LDOS spectra can be regarded as a signature of the time-reversal symmetry in the topological surface states, which can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. We perform an exact diagonalization study of the topological order in topological flat band models through calculating entanglement entropy and spectra of low-energy states. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states, which form a set of orthogonal basis states for the ground-state manifold. We extract the modular transformation matrices S (U) which contain the information of mutual (self) statistics, quantum dimensions, and the fusion rule of quasiparticles. Moreover, we demonstrate that these matrices are robust and universal in the whole topological phase against different perturbations until the quantum phase transition takes place. We use the T-matrix approach for studying highly polarized homogeneous Fermi gases in one dimension with repulsive or attractive contact interactions. Using this approach, we compute ground state energies and values for the contact parameter that show excellent agreement with exact and other numerical methods at zero temperature, even in the strongly interacting regime. Furthermore, we derive an exact expression for the value of the contact parameter in one dimension at zero temperature. A procedure to construct symmetry-adapted Wannier functions in the framework of the maximally localized Wannier function approach [ Marzari and Vanderbilt Phys. Rev. B 56 12847 (1997); Souza, Marzari and Vanderbilt Phys. Rev. B 65 035109 (2001)] is presented. In this scheme, the minimization of the spread functional of the Wannier functions is performed with constraints that are derived from symmetry properties of the specified set of the Wannier functions and the Bloch functions used to construct them, therefore one can obtain a solution that does not necessarily yield the global minimum of the spread functional. We demonstrate that pointlike defects in noncollinear magnets give rise to a highly dispersive structure in the magnon scattering, violating a standard paradigm of its momentum independence. For a single impurity spin coupled to a prototypical noncollinear antiferromagnet, we find that the resolvent is dominated by a distinct dispersive structure with its momentum dependence set by the magnon dispersion and shifted by the ordering vector. This feature is a consequence of umklapp scattering off the impurity-induced spin texture, which arises due to the noncollinear ground state of the host system. We investigate the effects of bulk impurities on the electronic spectrum of Weyl semimetals, a recently identified class of Dirac-type materials. Using a T-matrix approach, we study resonant scattering due to a localized impurity in tight-binding versions of the continuum models recently discussed by [ Burkov, Hook and Balents Phys. Rev. B 84 235126 (2011)], describing perturbed four-component Dirac fermions in the vicinity of a critical point. The impurity potential is described by a strength g as well as a matrix structure Λ. Unlike the case in d-wave superconductors, where a zero energy resonance can always be induced by varying the scalar and/or magnetic impurity strength, we find that for certain types of impurity (Λ), the Weyl node is protected and that a scalar impurity will induce an intragap resonance over a wide range of scattering strength. We investigate the scattering off dilute magnetic impurities placed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. In the low-temperature limit, the impurity moments are Kondo-screened by the surface-state electrons, despite their exotic locking of spin and momentum. We determine signatures of the Kondo effect appearing in quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns as recorded by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, taking into account the full energy dependence of the T matrix as well as the hexagonal warping of the surface Dirac cones. We identify a universal energy dependence of the QPI signal at low scanning energies as the fingerprint of Kondo physics, markedly different from the signal due to nonmagnetic or static magnetic impurities. We study quasi-one-dimensional electron-hole (e-h) systems by applying a self-consistent screened T-matrix approximation (SSTA), which can treat an e-h pair embedded in the background of the exciton-plasma mixture, characterized by the exciton ionization ratio. Two classical-quantum crossovers are found. The first crossover takes place as the drastic suppression of ionization ratio, representing the onset of the quantum dissociation of the exciton (binding-energy reduction and level-broadening effects). The second one can be seen in a gradual change in the interband absorption-gain and photoluminescence spectra: Moss-Burstein effects become significant, and the e-h plasma starts to dominate the optical gain. Most of the features of the absorption-gain spectra observed in the recent experiments can be captured semiquantitatively by our SSTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the form dependence of fits to ? N elastic scattering data, based on a Chew-Mandelstam K-matrix formalism. Extracted partial-wave amplitudes and resonances characterized by T-matrix poles are compared in fits generated with and without explicit Chew-Mandelstam AT-matrix poles. Diagonalization of the S-matrix yields the eigenphase representation. While the eigenphases can vary significantly for the different parametrizations, die locations of most T-matrix poles are relatively stable. We also find the partial-wave amplitudes for ? N elastic scattering to be quite stable. By turning on and off the explicit Chew-Mandelstam pole contributions, we are able to determine how the T-matrix poles are generated in this approach. Solutions for characterizing both electromagnetic wave propagation in, and scattering by, a gyrotropic sphere are obtained based on some recently published literature. Both gyrotropic permittivity and permeability tensors are considered herein, and both transmitted internal fields and scattered external fields are derived theoretically. Compared with problems of a uniaxial sphere, a gyroelectric sphere, and a gyromagnetic sphere, the scattering problem considered here is found to be astonishingly complicated but more generalized in formulation and solution procedure. Numerical validations are made by reducing our results to a gyromagnetic sphere and comparing them with the results obtained using the Fourier transform method, where excellent agreements are observed. Then, radar cross sections (RCSs) versus electric and magnetic gyrotropy ratios are computed, while hybrid effects due to both electric and magnetic gyrotropies are studied extensively, where some special cases of uniaxial spheres are demonstrated. It is shown that characteristics of gyrotropy parameters in Cartesian coordinates may lead to considerably large variations in RCS values, elucidating physical significance of gyrotropy and anisotropy ratios in scattering control. The generalized formulation of the problem is expected to have wide practical applications, while some features of this gyrotropic sphere may help other researchers or engineers to understand more physical insight. We have reexamined the problem of disorder in two-band superconductors, and shown, within the framework of the T-matrix approximation, that the suppression of Tc can be described by a single parameter depending on the intraband and interband impurity scattering rates. Tc is shown to be more robust against nonmagnetic impurities than would be predicted in the trivial extension of Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory. We find a disorder-induced transition from the s± state to a gapless and then to a fully gapped s++ state, controlled by a single parameter--the sign of the average coupling constant (λ). Accurate numerical results are derived for transport properties of Kondo impurity systems with potential scattering and orbital degeneracy. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method, static and dynamic physical quantities are derived in a wide temperature range across the Kondo temperature TK. With strong potential scattering, the resistivity tends to decrease with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the ordinary Kondo effect. Correspondingly, the quasiparticle density of states obtains the antiresonance around the Fermi level. Thermopower also shows characteristic deviation from the standard Kondo behavior, while magnetic susceptibility follows the universal temperature dependence even with strong potential scattering. It is found that the t-matrix in the presence of potential scattering is not a relevant quantity for the Friedel sum rule, for which a proper limit of the f-electron Green's function is introduced. The optical theorem is also discussed in the context of Kondo impurity models with potential scattering. It is shown that optical theorem holds not only in the Fermi-liquid range but also for large energies, and therefore is less restrictive than the Friedel sum rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that a coherent picture of the dc conductivity of monolayer and bilayer graphene at finite electronic densities emerges upon considering that strong short-range potentials are the main source of scattering in these two systems. The origin of the strong short-range potentials may lie in adsorbed hydrocarbons at the surface of graphene. The equivalence among results based on the partial-wave description of scattering, the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and the T-matrix approach is established. Scattering due to resonant impurities close to the neutrality point is investigated via a numerical computation of the Kubo formula using a kernel polynomial method. We find that relevant adsorbate species originate impurity bands in monolayer and bilayer graphene close to the Dirac point. In the midgap region, a plateau of minimum conductivity of about e2/h (per layer) is induced by the resonant disorder. In bilayer graphene, a large adsorbate concentration can develop an energy gap between midgap and high-energy states. As a consequence, the conductivity plateau is supressed near the edges and a "conductivity gap" takes place. Finally, a scattering formalism for electrons in biased bilayer graphene, taking into account the degeneracy of the spectrum, is developed and the dc conductivity of that system is studied. The master equation describing the nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum dot coupled to metallic leads is considered. Employing a superoperator approach, we derive an exact time-convolutionless master equation for the probabilities of dot states, i.e., a time-convolutionless Pauli master equation. The generator of this master equation is derived order by order in the hybridization between dot and leads. Although the generator turns out to be closely related to the T-matrix expressions for the transition rates, which are plagued by divergences, in the time-convolutionless generator all divergences cancel order by order. The time-convolutionless and T-matrix master equations are contrasted to the Nakajima-Zwanzig version. The absence of divergences in the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation due to the nonexistence of secular reducible contributions becomes rather transparent in our approach, which explicitly projects out these contributions. We also show that the time-convolutionless generator contains the generator of the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation in the Markov approximation plus corrections, which we make explicit. Furthermore, it is shown that the stationary solutions of the time-convolutionless and the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equations are identical. However, this identity neither extends to perturbative expansions truncated at finite order nor to dynamical solutions. We calculate the scattering T-matrix of I=0 K̅N-pS coupled channels taking a ladder sum of the Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction without on-shell factorization, regularizing three types of divergent meson-baryon loop functions by dimensional regularization and renormalizing them by introducing counter terms. We show that not only infinite but also finite renormalization is important for the renormalized physical scattering T-matrix to have the form of the Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction. The results with and without on-shell factorization are compared. The difference of the scattering T-matrix is small near the renormalization point, close to the observed Λ(1405). The difference, however, increases with the distance from the renormalization point. The scattering T-matrix without on-shell factorization has two poles in the complex center-of-mass energy plane as with on-shell factorization, the real part of which is close to the observed Λ(1405). While the difference is small with and without on-shell factorization in the position of the first pole, closer to the observed Λ(1405), the difference is considerably large in the position of the second pole: the imaginary part of the center-of-mass energy of the second pole without on-shell factorization is as large as or even larger than twice that with on-shell factorization. Also, we discuss the origin of the contradiction about the second pole between two approaches, the chiral unitary approach with on-shell factorization and the phenomenological approach without on-shell factorization. Acoustic radiation forces (ARFs) induced by a single Bessel beam with arbitrary order and location on a nonspherical shape are studied using the T -matrix method (TMM) in three dimensions. Based on the radiation stress tensor approach and the multipole expansion method for the arbitrary Bessel beam, the ARF expressions are derived in terms of the incident and scattered beam shape coefficients independently with the corresponding homemade code packages. Several numerical experiments are conducted to verify the versatility of the TMM. The axial ARFs of several typical shapes are considered in the analysis, with the emphasis on the axial ARF reversal and the corresponding physical mechanism. This study may guide the experimental setup to find negative axial ARFs quickly and effectively based on the predicted parameters with TMM. Relatively elongated shapes may be helpful for pulling forces in Bessel beams. Furthermore, the lateral ARFs for both convex and concave nonspherical shapes are also investigated with different topological charges, cone angles, and offsets of the particle centroid to the beam axis in a broadband frequency regime. A brief theoretical derivation of the incident beam shape coefficients for the standing Bessel beams is also given. The present work could help to design the acoustic tweezers numerical toolbox, which provides an acoustical alternative to the optical tweezers toolbox. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study lasing at the high-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone in a honeycomb plasmonic lattice. We use symmetry arguments to define singlet and doublet modes at the K points of the reciprocal space. We experimentally demonstrate lasing at the K points that is based on plasmonic lattice modes and two-dimensional feedback. By comparing polarization properties to T-matrix simulations, we identify the lasing mode as one of the singlets with an energy minimum at the K point enabling feedback. A self-consistent thermodynamic T-matrix approach is deployed to study the microscopic properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), encompassing both light- and heavy-parton degrees of freedom in a unified framework. The starting point is a relativistic effective Hamiltonian with a universal color force. The input in-medium potential is quantitatively constrained by computing the heavy-quark (HQ) free energy from the static T-matrix and fitting it to pertinent lattice-QCD (lQCD) data. The corresponding T-matrix is then applied to compute the equation of state (EoS) of the QGP in a two-particle irreducible formalism, including the full off-shell properties of the selfconsistent single-parton spectral functions and their two-body interaction. In particular, the skeleton diagram functional is fully resummed to account for emerging bound and scattering states as the critical temperature is approached from above. We find that the solution satisfying three sets of lQCD data (EoS, HQ free energy, and quarkonium correlator ratios) is not unique. As limiting cases we discuss a weakly coupled solution, which features color potentials close to the free energy, relatively sharp quasiparticle spectral functions and weak hadronic resonances near Tc, and a strongly coupled solution with a strong color potential (much larger than the free energy), resulting in broad nonquasiparticle parton spectral functions and strong hadronic resonance states which dominate the EoS when approaching Tc. This is Part II of the paper series on data-compatible T-matrix completion (DCTMC), which is a method for solving nonlinear inverse problems. Part I of the series [H. W. Levinson and V. A. Markel, Phys. Rev. E 94, 043317 (2016)] contains theory and here we present simulations for inverse scattering of scalar waves. The underlying mathematical model is the scalar wave equation and the object function that is reconstructed is the medium susceptibility. The simulations are relevant to ultrasound tomographic imaging and seismic tomography. It is shown that DCTMC is a viable method for solving strongly nonlinear inverse problems with large data sets. It provides not only the overall shape of the object, but the quantitative contrast, which can correspond, for instance, to the variable speed of sound in the imaged medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
