In the present work, we propose an ionic Hamiltonian for describing the interaction of graphene with an adsorbed Co atom. In this approach, the electronic correlation effects, related to the many d orbitals involved in the interaction, are taken into account by selecting appropriate electronic configurations of the adsorbed atom. The Hamiltonian parameters are calculated considering the localized and extended features of the atom-surface interacting system. The physical quantities of interest are calculated by using a Green functions formalism, solved by means of the equations of motion method closed up to a second order in the atom-band coupling term. The charge and spin fluctuations in the adsorbed Co atom are inferred from density functional theory calculations and assuming that the lower energy configurations obey Hund?s rules. The calculated spectral densities and the occurrence probabilities of the different atomic configurations are analyzed as a function of the Co energy level positions and the surface temperature. In addition, the conductance spectra are calculated by using the Keldysh formalism and compared with existing measurements. We analyze the behavior, under variable bias and gate potentials, of resonancelike features in the conductance spectra which can be related to transitions between atomic configurations of low occurrence probability. We address the problem of electronic and nuclear spin resonance of an individual atom on a surface driven by a scanning tunnelling microscope. Several mechanisms have been proposed so far, some of them based on the modulation of exchange and crystal field associated to a piezoelectric displacement of the adatom driven by the RF tip electric field. Here we consider a new mechanism, where the piezoelectric displacement modulates the g factor anisotropy, leading both to electronic and nuclear spin flip transitions. We discuss thoroughly the cases of Ti-H (S = 1/2) and Fe (S = 2) on MgO, relevant for recent experiments. We model the system using two approaches. First, an analytical model that includes crystal field, spin orbit coupling and hyperfine interactions. Second, we carry out density functional based calculations. We find that the modulation of the anisotropy of the g tensor due to the piezoelectric displacement of the atom is an additional mechanism for STM based single spin resonance, that would be effective in S = 1/2 adatoms with large spin orbit coupling. Numerical simulations and finite-size scaling analysis have been carried out to study the problem of inverse site percolation by the removal of k×k square tiles (k2-mers) from square lattices. The process starts with an initial configuration, where all lattice sites are occupied and, obviously, the opposite sides of the lattice are connected by occupied sites. Then the system is diluted by removing k2-mers of occupied sites from the lattice following a random sequential adsorption mechanism. The process finishes when the jamming state is reached and no more objects can be removed due to the absence of occupied sites clusters of appropriate size and shape. The central idea of this paper is based on finding the maximum concentration of occupied sites, pc,k, for which the connectivity disappears. This particular value of the concentration is called the inverse percolation threshold and determines a well-defined geometrical phase transition in the system. The results obtained for pc,k show that the inverse percolation threshold is a decreasing function of k in the range 1≤k≤4. For k≥5, all jammed configurations are percolating states, and consequently, there is no nonpercolating phase. In other words, the lattice remains connected even when the highest allowed concentration of removed sites is reached. The jamming exponent νj was measured, being νj=1 regardless of the size k considered. In addition, the accurate determination of the critical exponents ν, β, and γ reveals that the percolation phase transition involved in the system, which occurs for k varying between one and four, has the same universality class as the standard percolation problem. We study the diffusion process in binary mixtures using transition probabilities that depend on a mean-field potential. This approach reproduces the Darken equation, a relationship between the intrinsic and the tracer diffusion coefficients, $D_A$ and $D_A^*$, through the thermodynamic factor $\Phi$ (a function of the derivative of the activity coefficient against molar fraction). The mean-field approach allows us to go beyond the Darken equation and separately specify the dependence of $D_A$ and $D_A^*$ on the thermodynamic factor. We obtain that $\Phi$ appears in the expression for $D_A^*$, but the intrinsic diffusivity $D_A$ turns out to be independent of $\Phi$. Experimental results taken from the literature on diffusion in metal alloys are consistent with this theoretical prediction., Comment: 7pages, 2 figures

A search for supersymmetry in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton is presented. Two exclusive final states with either exactly one or at least two τ-leptons are considered. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1 delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model expectation. At 95% confidence level, model-independent upper limits on the cross section are set and exclusion limits are provided for two signal scenarios: a simplified model of gluino pair production with τ-rich cascade decays, and a model with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB). In the simplified model, gluino masses up to 2000 GeV are excluded for low values of the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), while LSP masses up to 1000 GeV are excluded for gluino masses around 1400 GeV. In the GMSB model, values of the supersymmetry-breaking scale are excluded below 110 TeV for all values of tanβ in the range 2≤tanβ≤60, and below 120 TeV for tanβ>30. Fil: Aaboud, M.. We investigate Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) surface growth in the presence of power-law temporally correlated noise. By means of extensive numerical simulations of models in the KPZ universality class we find that, as the noise correlator index increases above some threshold value, the surface exhibits anomalous kinetic roughening of the type described by the generic scaling theory of Ramasco [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2199 (2000)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.84.2199]. Remarkably, as the driving noise temporal correlations increase, the surface develops a characteristic pattern of macroscopic facets that completely dominates the dynamics in the long time limit. We argue that standard scaling fails to capture the behavior of KPZ subject to long-range temporally correlated noise. The ground state phase diagram of a spin $S=1/2$ $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction $ {\cal H}= \sum_n J\left[\left(S^x_n S^x_{n+1} +S^y_n S^y_{n+1}+\Delta S^z_n S^z_{n+1}\right)+(D_0+(-1)^n D_1)\left(S^x_n S^y_{n+1} -S^y_n S^{x}_{n+1} \right) \right] $ is studied using the continuum-limit bosonization approach and extensive density matrix renormalization group computations. It is shown that the effective continuum-limit bosonized theory of the model is given by the double frequency sine-Gordon model (DSG) where the frequences i.e. the scaling dimensions of the two competing cosine perturbation terms depend on the effective anisotropy parameter $\gamma^*=J\Delta /\sqrt{J^2+D_0^2+D_1^2}$. Exploring the ground state properties of the DSG model we have shown that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains the following four phases: (i) the ferromagnetic phase at $\gamma^*\gamma^{\ast}_{c2}>1$ the gapped composite (C2) phase characterized in addition to the coexisting spin dimerization and alternating chirality patterns, by the presence of LRO antiferromagnetic order. The transition from the LL to the C1 phase at $\gamma^*_{c1}$ belongs to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, while the transition at $\gamma^*_{c2}$ from C1 to C2 phase is of the Ising type., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The "wrapping" of polymer chains on the surface of carbon nanotubes allows one to obtain multifunctional hybrid materials with unique properties for a wide range of applications in biomedicine, electronics, nanocomposites, biosensors, and solar cell technologies. We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations the force-assisted desorption kinetics of a polymer from the surface of a carbon nanotube. We find that, due to the geometric coupling between the adsorbing surface and the conformation of the macromolecule, the process of desorption slows down dramatically upon increasing the windings around the nanotube. This behavior can be rationalized in terms of an overdamped dynamics with a frictional force that increases exponentially with the number of windings of the macromolecule, resembling the Euler-Eytelwein mechanism that describes the interplay between applied tension and frictional forces on a rope wrapped around a curved surface. The results highlight the fundamental role played by the geometry to control the dynamics and mechanical stability of hybrid materials in order to tailor properties and maximize performance. In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 97, 104044 (2018)] we pointed out some shortcomings of the standard approach to chameleon theories consisting in treating the small bodies used to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP) as test particles, whose presence do not modify the chameleon field configuration. In that paper we developed an alternative method to determine the relevant field configuration which takes into account the influence of both test and source bodies, and computed the chamaleon mediated force. Relying on that analysis we showed that the effective acceleration of test bodies is composition dependent even when the model is based on universal couplings. In this paper, we improve our method by using a more suitable approximation for the effective chameleon potential in situations where the bodies are in the so-called "thick shell regime". We then find new and more restrictive bounds on the model' s parametres by confronting the new theoretical predictions with the empirical bounds on E\"otv\"os parameter comming from the lunar laser ranging experiments., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PRD

We report the precise control of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in devices of self-assembled core/shell Fe$_3$O$_4$/Co$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles ($0\leq x\leq 1$). Adjusting the magnetic anisotropy through the content of Co$^{2+}$ in the shell, provides an accurate tool to control the switching field between the bistable states of the TMR. In this way, different combinations of soft/hard and hard/soft core/shell configurations can be envisaged for optimizing devices with the required magnetotransport response., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the mean-field phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions in two dimensions. This model describes ultracold bosonic atoms confined by a twodimensional optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode with the same wavelength as the lattice. We determine the ground-state phase diagram for a grand-canonical ensemble by means of analytical and numerical methods. Our results mostly agree with the ones reported in Dogra et al. [PRA 94, 023632 (2016)], and have a remarkable qualitative agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo phase diagrams of Flottat et al. [PRB 95, 144501 (2017)]. The salient differences concern the stability of the supersolid phases, which we discuss in detail. Finally, we discuss differences and analogies between the ground state properties of strong long-range interacting bosons with the ones predicted for repulsively interacting dipolar bosons in two dimensions. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu2Cl(OH)3.Based on ab initio band structure calculations, we derive a magnetic coupling scheme of essentially a S = 1/2 sawtooth chain. Experimentally, we fully characterize the long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state and field-induced behavior, here for H k b axis. Magnetic order is suppressed by magnetic fields of ∼ 20 T, while beginning at 31.5 T we observe a wide magnetization plateau at half of the saturation magnetization, Msat/2. Numerical calculations for the magnetization M(H) of the quantum sawtooth chain reveal a plateau at Msat/2, raising the issue of the understandingof its microscopic nature. Fil: Heinze, L.. We report detailed thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments on GdCoIn$_5$ and GdRhIn$_5$ single crystal samples that show a sudden change in the dilation at a field B$^\ast$ for temperatures below the N\'eel transition temperature TN. We present a first-principles model including crystal-field effects, dipolar and exchange interactions, and the dependence of the exchange couplings with lattice distortions in order to fully account for the magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data. The mean-field solution of the model shows that a transition between metastable states occurs at the field B$^\ast$. It also indicates that two degenerate phases coexist in the sample at temperatures below TN. This allows to explain the lack of observation, in high resolution x-ray experiments, of an orthorhombic distortion at the N\'eeel transition even though the magnetic structure breaks the tetragonal symmetry and the magnetoelastic coupling is significant. The migration of oxygen vacancies (VO) in ceria-based systems is crucial to their functionality in applications. Yet, although the VO’s structure and the distribution of the Ce3þ polarons at the CeO2ð111Þ surface has received extensive attention, the dynamic behaviors of VO ’s and polarons are not fully understood. By combining density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the movements of VO ’s and polarons exhibit very distinct entanglement characteristics within a temperature range of 300–900 K, and that the positions of the Ce3þ polarons play a key role in the VO migration. Long-distance vacancy migration occurs at moderate temperatures when the “suitable” Ce3þ distribution remains long enough to promote oxygen migration. This study provides microscopic insight into the interplay between the electronic and ionic charge transport in ceria that will be beneficial for the rational design of conductive ceria-based materials. Available macroscopic theories—such as the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) model—predict sphericalparticles to stick to each other at small collision velocitiesv; above the bouncing velocity,vb, they bounce. Westudy the details of the bouncing threshold using molecular dynamics simulation for crystalline nanoparticleswhere atoms interact via the Lennard-Jones potential. We show that the bouncing velocity strongly dependson the nanoparticle orientation during collision; for some orientations, nanoparticles stick at all velocities.The dependence of bouncing on orientation is caused by energy dissipation during dislocation activity. Thebouncing velocity decreases with increasing nanoparticle radius in reasonable agreement with JKR theory. Fororientations for which bouncing exists, nanoparticles stick again at a higher velocity, the fusion velocity,vf,such that bouncing only occurs in a finite range of velocities—the bouncing window. Thiolated gold nanointerfaces play a key role in numerous fields of science, technology, as well as modern medicine to coat, functionalize, and protect. Our computational study reveals that the mechanical vs thermal stabilities of aliphatic thiolates on gold surfaces are strikingly different from those of aromatic thiolates. The aliphatic thiolates feature, at the same time, a higher thermal desorption energy but a lower mechanical rupture force than thiophenolates. Our analysis discloses that this most counterintuitive property is due to different mechanochemical detachment mechanisms. Electronic structure analyses along the detachment pathways trace this back to the distinct electronic properties of the SAu bond in stretched nanojunctions. The discoveries that it is a higher thermal stability that entails a lower mechanical stability and that mechanical loads generate different local nanostructures depending on the nature of the thiolate are highly relevant for the rational design of improved thiol-gold nanocontacts. We study the spatial interference effects appearing during the ionization of atoms (H, He, Ne, and Ar) by few-cycle laser pulses using single-electron ab initio calculations. The spatial interference is the result of the coherent superposition of the electronic wave packets created during one half cycle of the driving field following different spatial paths. This spatial interference pattern may be interpreted as the hologram of the target atom. With the help of a wave-function analysis (splitting) technique and approximate (strong-field and Coulomb-Volkov) calculations, we directly show that the hologram is the result of the electronic-wave-packet scattering on the parent ion. On the He target we demonstrate the usefulness of the wave-function splitting technique in the disentanglement of different interference patterns. Further, by performing calculations for the different targets, we show that the pattern of the hologram does not depend on the angular symmetry of the initial state and it is strongly influenced by the atomic species of the target: A deeper bounding potential leads to a denser pattern. The role of activity on the hydrodynamic dispersion of bacteria in a model porous medium is studied by tracking thousands of bacteria in a microfluidic chip containing randomly placed pillars. We first evaluate the spreading dynamics of two populations of motile and non-motile bacteria injected at different flow rates. In both cases, we observe that the mean and the variance of the distances covered by the bacteria vary linearly with time and flow velocity, a result qualitatively consistent with the standard geometric dispersion picture. However, quantitatively, the motiles bacteria display a systematic retardation effect when compared to the non-motile ones. Furthermore, the shape of the traveled distance distribution in the flow direction differs significantly for both the motile and the non-motile strain, hence probing a markedly different exploration process. For the non-motile bacteria, the distribution is Gaussian whereas for the motile ones, the distribution displays a positive skewness and spreads exponentially downstream akin to a Gamma distribution. The detailed microscopic study of the trajectories reveals two salient effects characterizing the exploration process of motile bacteria : (i) The emergence of an "active" retention effect due to an extended exploration of the pore surfaces, (ii) an enhanced spreading at the forefront due to the transport of bacteria along "fast-tracks" where they acquire a velocity larger than the local flow velocity. In this work we propose and investigate a new strategy of vaccination, which we call "dynamic vaccination". In our model, susceptible people become aware that one or more of their contacts are infected, and thereby get vaccinated with probability $\omega$, before having physical contact with any infected patient. Then, the non-vaccinated individuals will be infected with probability $\beta$. We apply the strategy to the SIR epidemic model in a multiplex network composed by two networks, where a fraction $q$ of the nodes acts in both networks. We map this model of dynamic vaccination into bond percolation model, and use the generating functions framework to predict theoretically the behavior of the relevant magnitudes of the system at the steady state. We find a perfect agreement between the solutions of the theoretical equations and the results of stochastic simulations. In addition, we find an interesting phase diagram in the plane $\beta-\omega$, which is composed by an epidemic and a non-epidemic phases, separated by a critical threshold line $\beta_c$, which depends on $q$. Wefind that, for all values of $q$, a region in the diagram where the vaccination is so efficient that, regardless of the virulence of the disease, it never becomes an epidemic. We compare our strategy with random immunization and find that using the same amount of vaccines for both scenarios, we obtain that the spread of the disease is much lower in the case of dynamic vaccination when compared to random immunization. Furthermore, we also compare our strategy with targeted immunization and we find that, depending on $\omega$, dynamic vaccination will perform significantly better, and in some cases will stop the disease before it becomes an epidemic., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

The functional patterns of the visual cortex observed in some mammals such as cats, primates, and humans has allowed us to understand basic principles of organization in the structure of the cortex. However, the observation of different kinds of functional arrangement in other animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, and squirrels, called salt and pepper patterns, raise questions about which of these principles can be transferred to the understanding of visual processing in general. In order to gain insight into these basic principles, in this work we propose a simple model for the formation of spatiotemporal patterns in the visual cortex. The model is based on coupled phase oscillators that interact through an evolving complex network that is embedded in a two-dimensional Euclidean space. In this way we are able to explore the relation between network structure and functional organization. We find that the model allows for the emergence of clustered synchronized states that are spatially segregated as some orientation maps, and also synchronized states that are spatially interspersed, resembling salt and pepper organizational maps. For classical Markovian stochastic systems, past and future events become statistically independent when conditioned to a given state at the present time. Memory non-Markovian effects break this condition, inducing a non-vanishing conditional past-future correlation. Here, this classical memory indicator is extended to a quantum regime, which provides an operational definition of quantum non-Markovianity based on a minimal set of three time-ordered quantum system measurements and post-selection. The fragmentation of high-energy gluons at small opening angles is largely unconstrained by present measurements. Gluon splitting to b-quark pairs is a unique probe into the properties of gluon fragmentation because identified b-tagged jets provide a proxy for the quark daughters of the initial gluon. In this study, key differential distributions related to the g→bb¯ process are measured using 33 fb-1 of s=13 TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2016. Jets constructed from charged-particle tracks, clustered with the anti-kt jet algorithm with radius parameter R=0.2, are used to probe angular scales below the R=0.4 jet radius. The observables are unfolded to particle level in order to facilitate direct comparisons with predictions from present and future simulations. Multiple significant differences are observed between the data and parton shower Monte Carlo predictions, providing input to improve these predictions of the main source of background events in analyses involving boosted Higgs bosons decaying into b-quarks. A search for heavy long-lived multicharged particles is performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1 collected in 2015 and 2016 from proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV are examined. Particles producing anomalously high ionization, consistent with long-lived massive particles with electric charges from |q|=2e to |q|=7e, are searched for. No events are observed, and 95% confidence level cross-section upper limits are interpreted as lower mass limits for a Drell-Yan production model. We study the static charge correlation function in an one-band model on a square lattice. The Hamiltonian consist of effective hoppings of the electrons between the lattice sites and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Approximating the irreducible charge correlation function by a single bubble yields the ladder approximation for the charge correlation function. In this approximation one finds in general three charge instabilities, two of them are due to nesting, the third one is the flux phase instability. Since these instabilities cannot explain the experiments in hole-doped cuprates we have included in the irreducible charge correlation function also Aslamasov-Larkin (AL) diagrams where charge fluctuations interact with products of spin fluctuations. We then find at high temperatures a nematic or $d$-wave Pomeranchuk instability with a very small momentum. Its transition temperature decreases roughly linearly with doping in the underdoped region and vanishes near optimal doping. Decreasing the temperature further a secondary axial charge-density wave (CDW) instability appears with mainly $d$-wave symmetry and a wave vector somewhat larger than the distance between nearest neighbor hot spots. At still lower temperatures the diagonal flux phase instability emerges. A closer look shows that the AL diagrams enhance mainly axial and not diagonal charge fluctuations in our one-band model. This is the main reason why axial and not diagonal instabilities are the leading ones in agreement with experiment. The two instabilities due to nesting vanish already at very low temperatures and do not play any major role in the phase diagram. Remarkable is that the nematic and the axial CDW instabilities show a large reentrant behavior., 12 pages, 9 figures

The structure functions F1 and F2 of the hadronic tensor of vector mesons are obtained at order 1/N and strong coupling using the gauge/gravity duality. We find that the large N limit and the high energy one do not commute. Thus, by considering the high energy limit first, our results of the first moments of F1 for the rho meson agree well with those from lattice QCD, with an important improvement of the accuracy with respect to the holographic dual calculation in the planar limit. The origin and nature of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays remains a mystery. However, considerable progress has been achieved in past years due to observations performed by the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array. Above $10^{18}$ eV the observed energy spectrum presents two features: a hardening of the slope at $\sim 10^{18.6}$ eV, which is known as the ankle, and a suppression at $\sim 10^{19.6}$ eV. The composition inferred from the experimental data, interpreted by using the current high energy hadronic interaction models, seems to be light below the ankle, showing a trend to heavier nuclei for increasing values of the primary energy. Also, the anisotropy information is consistent with an extragalactic origin of this light component that would dominate the spectrum below the ankle. Therefore, the models that explain the ankle as the transition from the galactic and extragalactic components are disfavored by present data. Recently, it has been proposed that this light component originates from the photodisintegration of more energetic and heavier nuclei in the source environment. The formation of the ankle can also be explained by this mechanism. In this work we study in detail this general scenario but in the context of the central region of active galaxies. In this case, the cosmic rays are accelerated near the supermassive black hole present in the central region of these types of galaxies, and the photodisintegration of heavy nuclei takes place in the radiation field that surrounds the supermassive black hole., Accepted for publication in PRD

The percolation problem of irreversibly deposited dimers on honeycomb and triangular lattices is studied. A dimer is composed of two segments, and occupies two adjacent adsorption sites. Each segment can be either a conductive segment (segment type A) or a nonconductive segment (segment type B). Three types of dimers are considered: AA, BB, and AB. The connectivity analysis is carried out by accounting only for the conductive segments (segments type A), whereas the B segments occupy a site in the lattice but are not taken into account in the percolation study. Different cases were investigated, according to the types of dimers involved in the process. By means of numerical simulations and finite-size scaling techniques, the complete phase diagram separating the percolating from the nonpercolating regions was determined for each considered lattice. We study a generalized Anderson model that mixes two localized configurations --one formed by two degenerate doublets and the other by a triplet with single-ion anisotropy $DS_z^2$-- by means of two degenerate conduction channels. The model has been derived for a single Ni impurity embedded into an O-doped Au chain. Using the numerical renormalization group, we find a topological quantum phase transition, at a finite value $D_c,$ between two regular Fermi liquid phases of high (low) conductance and topological number $2 I_L/��= 0$ (-1) for $D < D_c$ ($D > D_c$), where $I_L$ is the well-known Luttinger integral. At finite temperature the two phases are separated by a non-Fermi liquid phase with fractional impurity entropy $\frac{1}{2}{\rm ln}2$ and other properties which remind those of the two-channel Kondo model., 6 pages + Supplemental Material, 8 figures

This Letter presents a search for the production of a long-lived neutral particle (Zd) decaying within the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter, in association with a standard model (SM) Z boson produced via an intermediate scalar boson, where Z→ℓ+ℓ- (ℓ=e, μ). The data used were collected by the ATLAS detector during 2015 and 2016 pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1±0.8 fb-1. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Limits on the production cross section of the scalar boson times its decay branching fraction into the long-lived neutral particle are derived as a function of the mass of the intermediate scalar boson, the mass of the long-lived neutral particle, and its cτ from a few centimeters to one hundred meters. In the case that the intermediate scalar boson is the SM Higgs boson, its decay branching fraction to a long-lived neutral particle with a cτ approximately between 0.1 and 7 m is excluded with a 95% confidence level up to 10% for mZd between 5 and 15 GeV. A search for four-top-quark production, tt¯tt¯, is presented. It is based on proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during the years 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1. Data are analyzed in both the single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton channels, characterized by the presence of one or two isolated electrons or muons with high-transverse momentum and multiple jets. A data-driven method is used to estimate the dominant background from top-quark pair production in association with jets. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. The result is combined with the previous same-sign dilepton and multilepton searches carried out by the ATLAS Collaboration and an observed (expected) upper limit of 5.3 (2.1) times the four-top-quark Standard Model cross section is obtained at 95% confidence level. Additionally, an upper limit on the anomalous four-top-quark production cross section is set in the context of an effective field theory model. Fil: Aaboud, M.. We compute the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor S(q,ω) of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model (TLHM) using a Schwinger boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations (1/N corrections) of the saddle-point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120 -magnetic ordering, experimental observations have revealed a strong quantum character of the excitation spectrum. We conjecture that this phenomenon arises from the proximity of the ground state of the TLHM to the quantum melting point separating the magnetically ordered and spin-liquid states. Within this scenario, magnons are described as collective modes (two-spinon bound states) of a spinon condensate (Higgs phase) that spontaneously break the SU(2) symmetry of the TLHM. Crucial to our results is the proper account of this spontaneous symmetry breaking. The main qualitative difference relative to semiclassical treatments (1/S expansion) is the presence of a high-energy spinon continuum extending up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth. In addition, the magnitude of the ordered moment (m=0.224) agrees very well with numerical results and the low-energy part of the single-magnon dispersion is in very good agreement with series expansions. Our results indicate that the Schwinger boson approach is an adequate starting point for describing the excitation spectrum of some magnetically ordered compounds that are near the quantum melting point separating this Higgs phase from the deconfined spin-liquid state. In this work we present the magnetic structures and spin reorientation (SR) transitions of the mixed orthochromite-orthoferrite perovskites RFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er). Magnetization as a function of temperature and external magnetic field as well as neutron powder diffraction measurements were used to characterize the magnetic transitions, including the SR transitions in the transition metal sublattice and the ordering of the rare earth sublattice. The studied compounds order antiferromagnetically below 270 K in a Gx configuration compatible with the Γ4 representation. As temperature decreases, all the compounds show a SR transition from Gx (Γ4) to Gz (Γ2). This transition occurs in a wide temperature range, where both magnetic configurations coexist. Below this SR, the behavior in each case depends on the rare earth. HoFe0.5Cr0.5O3 shows Ho3+ sublattice ordering at a relatively high temperature (45 K). DyFe0.5Cr0.5O3 and ErFe0.5Cr0.5O3 show a second SR transition of the transition metal sublattice, from Gz (Γ2) to Gy (Γ1) at low temperatures (15 and 8 K, respectively). Below these temperatures a metamagnetic (MM) transition is observed for these two compounds at an external magnetic field of H ≈ 7 kOe. The fact that this is only observed for compounds showing Gz (Γ2) to Gy (Γ1) transition suggests that there is a correlation between the Gy (Γ1) order and the MM transition. Finally, TbFe0.5Cr0.5O3 is a peculiar case, since it is the only compound in this family that shows a re-entrant SR to Gx (Γ4) at very low temperatures. By combining these results with previous reports on RFeO3, RCrO3, and RFe0.5Cr0.5O3, we develop a method to qualitatively estimate the SR temperature and the type of transition. We also propose a complete magnetic phase diagram containing the SR transitions and R3+ ordering temperatures for all the RFe0.5Cr0.5O3 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds. We present a detailed study of the thermal dependence of the neutron powder diffraction (NPD) of RFe0.5Co0.5O3 perovskites (R=Tm, Er, Ho, Dy, and Tb) combined with a complete characterization of their magnetic, electric transport and ferroelectric properties. All samples are described with an orthorhombic (Pbnm) crystallographic structure. The inverse of magnetic susceptibility at high temperature shows an effective magnetic moment with contributions of high-spin Co3+, Fe3+, and the corresponding rare-earth cations (R3+) moments. Negative Curie-Weiss temperatures indicate antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations between the magnetic ions. At low temperature, the reduced magnetic saturation values are associated with crystal-field effects on R3+ ions. Below 300 K, magnetic reflections in NPD data show that the spin configuration in the ordered state is AFM type-G with a weak ferromagnetic component along the c axis (Γ4) for transition metal ions. Spin reorientation (SR) transitions are observed, changing the irreducible representation from Γ4 (Gx) to Γ2(Gz) at low temperatures, except for the Ho compound where it changes from Γ4 (Gx) to Γ1(Gy). Magnetization data under field cooling (FC) and zero field cooling (ZFC) protocols show reversal magnetization for R=Er and Tb. A significant change of the slope of the M vs T curves is associated with the onset of magnetic order (TN1∼250K) of Fe/Co sublattice. The electric conductivity at room temperature shows that Tm value is ten times less than the other rare earths. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity can be described with a variable range hopping model (lnσ∼T-1/4). Also, in the Tm case, the complex electrical permittivity shows a different behavior in comparison with the other members of the series. Finally, the Tm sample can be polarized when the specimen is cooled under different values of electrical field (E). Pyroelectric current can be detected while the sample is warming and depolarized, showing the ferroelectric critical temperature (TC) at TN1. The results of high energy simulated experiments where a given hadronic particle impacts on a given target are statistically analyzed. The energy range of the projectiles goes from below the LHC scale up to the highest cosmic ray energies. This study was carried out by using the pre- and post-LHC versions of the hadronic interaction models QGSJET, EPOS and SIBYLL. Our analysis indicates that the post-LHC models present smaller differences in various quantities that characterize the secondary particles produced after the hadronic collisions, in comparison with the corresponding differences that are found comparing the respective old (pre-LHC) versions of the hadronic models. However, it is also found that there exist some discrepancies among models that persist even at the LHC energy scale, that call for further theoretical investigation. An additional analysis of the impact that different modeling of hadronic collisions has on air shower development is also included. Searches for new heavy resonances decaying into different pairings of W, Z, or Higgs bosons, as well as directly into leptons, are presented using a data sample corresponding to 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at √ s = 13 TeV collected during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Analyses selecting bosonic decay modes in the qqqq, ννqq, `νqq, ``qq, `ν`ν, ``νν, `ν``, ````, qqbb, ννbb, `νbb, and ``bb final states are combined, searching for a narrow-width resonance. Likewise, analyses selecting the leptonic `ν and `` final states are also combined. These two sets of analyses are then further combined. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is observed. Three benchmark models are tested: a model predicting the existence of a new heavy scalar singlet, a simplified model predicting a heavy vector-boson triplet, and a bulk Randall–Sundrum model with a heavy spin-2 Kaluza–Klein excitation of the graviton. Cross-section limits are set at the 95% confidence level using an asymptotic approximation and are compared with predictions for the benchmark models. These limits are also expressed in terms of constraints on couplings of the heavy vector-boson triplet to quarks, leptons, and the Higgs boson. The data exclude a heavy vector-boson triplet with mass below 5.5 TeV in a weakly coupled scenario and 4.5 TeV in a strongly coupled scenario, as well as a Kaluza–Klein graviton with mass below 2.3 TeV. In this work we analyze the similarities and differences between the equations of motion for the center of mass and intrinsic angular momentum for isolated sources of gravitational radiation obtained by two different formulations. One approach is based on the asymptotic formulation of the general relativity, whereas the other relies on post-Newtonian methods. Starting from the three-band Hubbard model for the cuprates, we calculate analytically the four-spin cyclic exchange in the limit of infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion and zero O-O hopping $t_{pp}$ using two methods: i) perturbation theory in $t_{pd}/\Delta$, where $t_{pd}$ is the Cu-O hopping and $\Delta$ the Cu-O charge transfer energy and ii) exact solution of a Cu$_4$O$_4$ plaquette. The latter method coincides with the first to order eight in $t_{pd}$ and permits to extend the results to $t_{pd}/\Delta$ of order one. A search for new resonances decaying into jets containing b-hadrons in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented in the dijet mass range from 0.57 TeV to 7 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of up to 36.1 fb−1 collected in 2015 and 2016 at √ s = 13 TeV. No evidence of a significant excess of events above the smooth background shape is found. Upper cross-section limits and lower limits on the corresponding signal mass parameters for several types of signal hypotheses are provided at 95% CL. In addition, 95% CL upper limits are set on the cross-sections for new processes that would produce Gaussian-shaped signals in the di-b-jet mass distributions. Fil: Daneri, María Florencia. The lattice dynamics of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its deuterated analog DKDP was studied via first-principles DFT calculations. A thorough assessment of the quality of a wide range of functionals supplemented with the approximate inclusion of quantum nuclear effects indicated that the nonlocal van der Waals functional vdW-DF [M. Dion et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.92.246401; J. Klimeš et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 195131 (2011)PRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.83.195131] produces the best agreement with structural data for both compounds. This enabled the calculation of full phonon dispersions in the ferroelectric phase, and hence the phonon density of states and specific heat, in very good agreement with experimental data. Phonon bands and especially modes at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone were classified according to their vibrational pattern. This allowed for the assignment of stretching and bending modes of the hydrogen bonds. Internal modes involving the phosphate units were identified at lower frequencies, while the lowest-lying modes were those involving the K+ ion. These assignments were used to interpret infrared and Raman spectra along the c axis and in the perpendicular plane. Phonon modes calculated at the Γ point showed two types of instabilities. One was a normal mode polarized along the c axis of the crystal, while the other corresponded to a twofold-degenerate mode polarized in the perpendicular plane. The former gives rise to a spontaneous polarization in the ferroelectric phase at low temperatures by coupling to an optical K+-H2PO4- stretching mode, consistently with a significant off-diagonal Born effective charge on the hydrogen atoms. A mode describing the opposite rotation of neighboring PO4 tetrahedra was also found to couple strongly to the ferroelectric mode, as this modulates the O-O distance, which determines the barrier for proton transfer. In a previous paper [G. J. dos Santos, D. H. Linares, and A. J. Ramirez-Pastor, J. Stat. Mech. (2017) 07321110.1088/1742-5468/aa7df2] a methodology for the determination of the critical point of the condensation phase transition occurring in monolayers of linear adsorbates (k-mers) was presented. The maximum cumulant method was developed from the phenomenological observation that the fourth-order Binder cumulant and the isotherm inflection point are produced at the same value of chemical potential. In the present work, mathematical arguments are presented to show analytically that the previously mentioned relationship is satisfied by evaporation-condensation systems under the conditions that: (i) the surface coverage distribution function is a bimodal distribution composed of a linear combination of two normalized functions g1(θ) and g2(θ) with zero overlap and mean values θ1 and θ2, respectively; and (ii) g1(θ) and g2(θ) are unimodal distributions that are symmetric with respect to the middle point (θ1+θ2)/2. In addition, numerical results from Monte Carlo simulations of four different adsorption-desorption systems (linear k-mers on square and triangular lattices, S-shaped k-mers on square lattices and k2-mers on square lattices) are presented to check the theoretical results and to provide evidence of the general validity and robustness of the method. We discuss some fundamental properties of discrete system-time history states. Such states arise for a quantum reference clock of finite dimension and lead to a unitary evolution of system states when satisfying a static discrete Wheeler-DeWitt-type equation. We consider the general case where system-clock pairs can interact, analyzing first their different representations and showing there is always a special clock basis for which the evolution for a given initial state can be described by a constant Hamiltonian H. It is also shown, however, that when the evolution operators form a complete orthogonal set, the history state is maximally entangled for any initial state, as opposed to the case of a constant H, and can be generated through a simple double-clock setting. We then examine the quadratic system-time entanglement entropy, providing an analytic evaluation and showing it satisfies strict upper and lower bounds determined by the energy spread and the geodesic evolution connecting the initial and final states. We finally show that the unitary operator that generates the history state can itself be considered as an operator history state, whose quadratic entanglement entropy determines its entangling power. The critical behaviour of a non-local scalar field theory is studied. This theory has a non-local kinetic term which involves a real power 1-2\alpha of the Laplacian. The interaction term is the usual local \phi^{4} interaction. The lowest order Feynman diagrams corresponding to coupling constant renormalization, mass renormalization and field renormalization are computed. Particular features appearing in the renormalization of these non-local theory that differ from the case of local theories are studied. The previous calculations lead to the perturbative computation of the coupling constant beta function and critical exponents \nu and \eta. Experimental data on thin films of cylinder-forming block copolymers (BC)—free-standing BCmembranes as well as supported BC films—strongly suggest that the local orientation of the BC patternsis coupled to the geometry in which the patterns are embedded. We analyze this phenomenon using generalsymmetry considerations and numerical self-consistent field studies of curved BC films in cylindricalgeometry. The stability of the films against curvature-induced dewetting is also analyzed. In goodagreement with experiments, we find that the BC cylinders tend to align along the direction of curvature athigh curvatures. At low curvatures, we identify a transition from perpendicular to parallel alignment insupported films, which is absent in free-standing membranes. The aim of this work is to study the entanglement harvesting between two graphene layers inside a planar microcavity. Applying time-dependent perturbation theory it is shown that nonclassical correlations between electrons in different layers are obtained through the exchange of virtual photons. Considering different initial states of the electrons and the vacuum state of the electromagnetic field, the negativity measure that quantifies the entanglement is computed through the photon propagator for time scales smaller than the light-crossing time of the double layer. The results are compared with those obtained for hydrogenic probes and pointlike Unruh-DeWitt detectors, showing that for different initial states, entangled X states and more general entangled reduced matrices are obtained, which enlarge the classification of bipartite quantum states., 16 pages, 6 figures

Reduced ceria (CeO2−x ) has a rich phase diagram comprising a variety of bulk phases with stoichiometries ranging from CeO2 to Ce2O3 as the reduction conditions are increased. Some observed reduced ceria (111) surface reconstructions are terminations of stable bulk phases, such as √7 × √7, whereas others are not associated with any known stable phases, namely, √7 × 3, 3 × 3, and √3 × √3. In this paper, we analyze different periodic reconstructions of reduced ceria (111) surfaces within a theoretical framework. We describe the surfaces of stable bulk phases and elucidate the structure of the observed periodicities not corresponding to terminations of known stable bulk phases. Extending the 3 × 3 and √3 × √3 terminations into a bulk structure, we find a new quasistable Ce3O5 bulk phase, which explains both periodicities. On the contrary, the √7 × 3 surface structure cannot be extended into a bulk but stabilizes as a very thin overlayer. We also analyze other reported bulk structures with stoichiometry close to the Ce3O5 one, namely, the C-type Ce2O3+δ bulk phase, which cannot describe the observed terminations. Our goal is to provide a unified picture to describe the road map of CeO2−δ (111) surface reconstructions and, when possible, their relationship to reduced ceria bulk phases. A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks, TT¯ or BB¯, that decay into final states with jets and no reconstructed leptons. Jets in the final state are classified using a deep neural network as arising from hadronically decaying W/Z bosons, Higgs bosons, top quarks, or background. The analysis uses data from the ATLAS experiment corresponding to 36.1 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed. Results are interpreted assuming the vectorlike quarks decay into a Standard Model boson and a third-generation-quark, T→Wb,Ht,Zt or B→Wt,Hb,Zb, for a variety of branching ratios. At 95% confidence level, the observed (expected) lower limit on the vectorlike B-quark mass for a weak-isospin doublet (B, Y) is 950 (890) GeV, and the lower limits on the masses for the pure decays B→Hb and T→Ht, where these results are strongest, are 1010 (970) GeV and 1010 (1010) GeV, respectively. Results of a search for the pair production of photon-jets collimated groupings of photons in the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. Highly collimated photon-jets can arise from the decay of new, highly boosted particles that can decay to multiple photons collimated enough to be identified in the electromagnetic calorimeter as a single, photonlike energy cluster. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.7 fb-1, were collected in 2015 and 2016. Candidate photon-jet pair production events are selected from those containing two reconstructed photons using a set of identification criteria much less stringent than that typically used for the selection of photons, with additional criteria applied to provide improved sensitivity to photon-jets. Narrow excesses in the reconstructed diphoton mass spectra are searched for. The observed mass spectra are consistent with the Standard Model background expectation. The results are interpreted in the context of a model containing a new, high-mass scalar particle with narrow width, X, that decays into pairs of photon-jets via new, light particles, a. A search for resonant and nonresonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the bb¯τ+τ- final state is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb-1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Decays of the τ-lepton pairs with at least one τ lepton decaying to final states with hadrons and a neutrino are considered. No significant excess above the expected background is observed in the data. The cross-section times branching ratio for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production is constrained to be less than 30.9 fb, 12.7 times the standard model expectation, at 95% confidence level. The data are also analyzed to probe resonant Higgs boson pair production, constraining a model with an extended Higgs sector based on two doublets and a Randall-Sundrum bulk graviton model. Fully differential cross sections for electron impact of gaseous H2O at an impact energy of 81 eV arecalculated within the framework of the continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state model. Present results arebenchmarked against recent experimental data obtained in MPIK-Heidelberg by means of a reaction microscope.Cross sections calculated for different molecular orientations are properly averaged to mimic the experimentalconditions. Present results are in very good agreement with the experimental data for coplanar geometries.
