The dissipative chaotic dynamics of a particle subjected to a horizontally vibrating periodic potential is characterized theoretically and confirmed numerically in the case of an external chaos-controlling periodic excitation also acting on the particle. Theoretical predictions concerning the chaotic threshold in parameter space are deduced from the application of Melnikov's method that fully determine the chaos-control scenario. Also, the structure of diverse regularization regions in parameter space is explained theoretically with the aid of an energy analysis. It was found that the phase difference between the two periodic excitations involved plays a crucial role in the chaos-control scenario, with the particular feature that its optimal value depends upon the ratio between the damping coefficient and the excitation frequency. This constitutes a genuine feature of the chaos-control scenario associated with nonsteady potentials which is in contrast to the case of steady potentials. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of the chaos-control scenario against the presence of low-intensity Gaussian noise and reshaping of chaos-suppressing excitations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We characterize the role of the impulse transmitted (time integral over a half-period) by resonant secondary excitations at controlling (suppressing and enhancing) escape from a potential well, which is induced by periodic primary excitations. By using the universal model of a dissipative Heimholte oscillator, we demonstrate numerically that optimum control of escape occurs when the impulse transmitted by the chaos-controlling excitations is maximum while keeping their amplitude and period fixed. These findings are in complete agreement with analytical predictions from two independent methods: Melnikov analysis and energy-based analysis. The role of the wave form of periodic secondary excitations at controlling (suppressing and enhancing) escape from a potential well is investigated. We demonstrate analytically (by Melnikov analysis) and numerically that a judicious choice of the excitation's wave form greatly improves the effectiveness of the escape-controlling excitations while keeping their amplitude and period fixed. These predictions are confirmed by an energy-based analysis that provides the same optimal values of the escape-controlling parameters. Droplets can exhibit complex dynamics when vertically and sinusoidally forced by a liquid surface from which they remain separated by a thin air cushion. Here we extend previous studies to include a family of periodic forcing functions that vary smoothly from sinusoidal to square wave by changing a single parameter. Through analytical and numerical work we find that the dynamics of the droplets and transitions between regular and chaotic regimes are effectively controlled by the impulse imparted on the droplets over a half-period. We also find that having nonsinusoidal forcing lowers the threshold amplitudes for most of the dynamical regimes. We study the effectiveness of locally controlling the impulse transmitted by parametric periodic excitations at inducing and suppressing chaos in starlike networks of driven damped pendula, leading to asynchronous chaotic states and equilibria, respectively. We found that the inducing (suppressor) effect of increasing (decreasing) the impulse transmitted by the parametric excitations acting on particular nodes depends strongly on their number and degree of connectivity as well as the coupling strength. Additionally, we provide a theoretical analysis explaining the basic physical mechanisms of the emergence and suppression of chaos as well as the main features of the chaos-control scenario. We study discrete breathers in prototypical nonlinear oscillator networks subjected to nonharmonic zero-mean periodic excitations. We show how the generation of stationary and moving discrete breathers are optimally controlled by solely varying the impulse transmitted by the periodic excitations, while keeping constant the excitation's amplitude and period. Our theoretical and numerical results show that the enhancer effect of increasing values of the excitation's impulse, in the sense of facilitating the generation of stationary and moving breathers, is due to a correlative increase of the breather's action and energy. Characterizing the emergence of chaotic dynamics of complex networks is an essential task in nonlinear science with potential important applications in many fields such as neural control engineering, microgrid technologies, and ecological networks. Here, we solve a critical outstanding problem in this multidisciplinary research field: the emergence and persistence of spatiotemporal chaos in complex networks of damped-driven nonlinear oscillators in the significant weak-coupling regime, while they exhibit regular behavior when uncoupled. By developing a comprehensive theory with the aid of standard analytical methods, a hierarchy of lower-dimensional effective models, and extensive numerical simulations, we uncover and characterize the basic physical mechanisms concerning both heterogeneity-induced and impulse-induced emergence, enhancement, and suppression of chaos in starlike and scale-free networks of periodically driven, dissipative nonlinear oscillators.

Directed ratchet transport is generally observed in nonautonomous systems as a result of the interplay of nonlinearity, symmetry breaking, and nonequilibrium fluctuations. Here we demonstrate that ratchet dynamics can appear in significant transporting degrees of freedom of dissipative coupled systems without external bias due to unidirectional coupling of oscillatory degrees of freedom (which are also nonbiasing in any direction), while optimal enhancement of directed ratchet transport occurs when the initial conditions and parameters of such ratcheting degrees of freedom are suitably chosen as predicted by the theory of ratchet universality. The simple case of linear oscillatory degrees of freedom is discussed in detail, and numerical experiments are described which confirm all the theoretical predictions, including the dependence of current (velocity) reversals on the initial conditions and the ratcheting degrees-of-freedom parameters. This autonomous ratchet scenario could be exploited technologically, for instance, in the context of noncontact, rack-and-pinion type, nanoscale setups with coupling from the lateral Casimir force, and is relevant for studies of molecular motors in the biological realm.

This paper discusses two retrodictions of the theory of ratchet universality which explain previous experimental results concerning directed ratchet transport of cold atoms in dissipative optical lattices in one case and of fluxons in uniform annular Josephson junctions in the other, both driven by biharmonic fields. It has to be emphasized that these retrodictions are in sharp contrast with the current standard explanation of such experimental results, and they offer optimal control of the ratchetlike motion of such entities. New experimental proposals with cold atoms and fluxons are discussed, providing additional tests for novel predictions from ratchet universality.

The present work discusses symmetry-breaking-induced bidirectional escape from a symmetric metastable potential well by the application of zero-average periodic forces in the presence of dissipation. We characterized the interplay between heteroclinic instabilities leading to chaotic escape and breaking of a generalized parity symmetry leading to directed ratchet escape to an attractor either at ∞ or at -∞. Optimal enhancement of directed ratchet escape is found to occur when the wave form of the zero-average periodic force acting on the damped driven oscillator matches as closely as possible to a universal wave form, as predicted by the theory of ratchet universality. Specifically, the optimal approximation to the universal force triggers the almost complete destruction of the nonescaping basin for driving amplitudes which are systematically lower than those corresponding to a symmetric periodic force having the same period. We expect that this work could be potentially useful in the control of elementary dynamic processes characterized by multidirectional escape from a potential well, such as forced chaotic scattering and laser-induced dissociation of molecular systems, among others.

Locally decreasing the impulse transmitted by periodic pulses is shown to be a reliable method of taming chaos in starlike networks of dissipative nonlinear oscillators, leading to both synchronous periodic states and equilibria (oscillation death). Specifically, the paradigmatic model of damped kicked rotators is studied in which it is assumed that when the rotators are driven synchronously, i.e., all driving pulses transmit the same impulse, the networks display chaotic dynamics. It is found that the taming effect of decreasing the impulse transmitted by the pulses acting on particular nodes strongly depends on their number and degree of connectivity. A theoretical analysis is given explaining the basic physical mechanism as well as the main features of the chaos-control scenario.

Optimizing information transmission across a network is an essential task for controlling and manipulating generic information-processing systems. Here, we show how topological amplification effects in scale-free networks of signaling devices are optimally enhanced when the impulse transmitted by periodic external signals (time integral over two consecutive zeros) is maximum. This is demonstrated theoretically by means of a star-like network of overdamped bistable systems subjected to generic zero-mean periodic signals and confirmed numerically by simulations of scale-free networks of such systems. Our results show that the enhancer effect of increasing values of the signal's impulse is due to a correlative increase of the energy transmitted by the periodic signals, while it is found to be resonant-like with respect to the topology-induced amplification mechanism.

Understanding information transmission across a network is a fundamental task for controlling and manipulating both biological and manmade information-processing systems. Here we show how topological resonant-like amplification effects in scale-free networks of signaling devices are drastically reduced when phase disorder in the external signals is considered. This is demonstrated theoretically by means of a starlike network of overdamped bistable systems, and confirmed numerically by simulations of scale-free networks of such systems. The taming effect of the phase disorder is found to be sensitive to the amplification's strength, while the topology-induced amplification mechanism is robust against this kind of quenched disorder in the sense that it does not significantly change the values of the coupling strength where amplification is maximum in its absence.

The Comment by Quintero et al. [preceding Comment, Phys. Rev. E 88, 066101 (2013)] does not dispute the central result of our paper [Martínez and Chacón, Phys. Rev. E 87, 062114 (2013)], which is a theory explaining the interplay between thermal noise and symmetry breaking in the ratchet transport of a Brownian particle moving on a periodic substrate subjected to a temporal biharmonic excitation γ[ηsin(ωt)+α(1-η)sin(2ωt+φ)]. In the Comment, the authors claim, on the sole basis of their numerical simulations for the particular case α=2, that "there is no such universal force waveform and that the evidence obtained by the authors otherwise is due to their particular choice of parameters." Here we demonstrate by means of theoretical arguments and additional numerical simulations that all the conclusions of our original article are preserved.

The chaotic dynamics of pointlike, spherical particles in cylindrical Poiseuille flow is theoretically characterized and numerically confirmed when their own intrinsic swimming velocity undergoes temporal fluctuations around an average value. Two dimensionless ratios associated with the three significant temporal scales of the problem are identified that fully determine the chaos scenario. In particular, small but finite periodic fluctuations of swimming speed result in chaotic or regular motion depending on the position and orientation of the microswimmer with respect to the flow center line. Remarkably, the spatial extension of chaotic microswimmers is found to depend crucially on the fluctuations' period and amplitude and to be highly sensitive to the Fourier spectrum of the fluctuations. This has implications for the design of artificial microswimmers.

We show that directed ratchet transport of a driven overdamped Brownian particle subjected to a spatially periodic and symmetric potential can be reliably controlled by tailoring a biharmonic temporal force, in coherence with the degree-of-symmetry-breaking mechanism. We demonstrate that the effect of finite temperature on the purely deterministic ratchet scenario can be understood as an effective noise-induced change of the potential barrier which is in turn controlled by the degree-of-symmetry-breaking mechanism. Remarkably, we find that the same universal scenario holds for any symmetric periodic potential, while optimal directed ratchet transport occurs when the impulse transmitted (spatial integral over a half period) by the symmetric spatial force is maximum.

We uncover and characterize different chaotic transport scenarios in perfect two-dimensional periodic potentials by controlling the chaotic dynamics of particles subjected to periodic external forces in the absence of a ratchet effect (i.e., with no directed transport by symmetry breaking of zero-mean forces). After identifying relevant symmetries of the equations of motion, analytical estimates in parameter space for the occurrence of different transport scenarios are provided and confirmed by numerical simulations. These scenarios are highly sensitive to variations of the system's asymmetry parameters, including the eccentricity of the two-dimensional periodic potential and the direction of dc and ac forces, which could be useful for particle sorting purposes in those cases where chaos is unavoidable.

The control of chaos (suppression and enhancement) of a damped pendulum subjected to two perpendicular periodic excitations of its pivot (one chaos inducing and the other chaos controlling) is investigated. Analytical (Melnikov analysis) and numerical (Lyapunov exponents) results show that the initial phase difference between the two excitations plays a fundamental role in the control scenario. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in suppressing spatiotemporal chaos of chains of identical chaotic coupled pendula where homogeneous regularization is obtained under localized control on a minimal number of pendula. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of the control scenario against changes in the coupling function. In particular, synchronization-induced homogeneous regularization of chaotic chains can be highly enhanced by considering time-varying couplings instead of stationary couplings.

Optimal energy amplification via autoresonance in dissipative systems subjected to separatrix crossings is discussed through the universal model of a damped driven pendulum. Analytical expressions of the autoresonance responses and forces as well as the associated adiabatic invariants for the phase space regions separated by the underlying separatrix are derived from the energy-based theory of autoresonance. Additionally, applications to a single Josephson junction, topological solitons in Frenkel-Kontorova chains, as well as to the three-wave problem in dissipative media are discussed in detail from the autoresonance analysis.

We study the chaotic properties of steady-state traveling-wave solutions of the particle number density of a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive interatomic interaction loaded into a traveling optical lattice of variable shape. We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that chaotic traveling steady states can be reliably suppressed by small changes of the traveling optical lattice shape while keeping the remaining parameters constant. We find that the regularization route as the optical lattice shape is continuously varied is fairly rich, including crisis phenomena and period-doubling bifurcations. The conditions for a possible experimental realization of the control method are discussed.

We demonstrate that directed transport of topological solitons in damped, biharmonically driven Frenkel-Kontorova chains can be strongly enhanced by introducing suitable phase disorder into the asymmetric periodic driving. From a collective coordinate formalism, we theoretically deduce an effective deterministic equation of motion governing the dynamics of the soliton center-of-mass for which we predict the dependence of maximal soliton drift on disorder strength according to recently proposed general scaling laws concerning directed transport induced by symmetry breaking of temporal forces. We find that these results are in excellent agreement with those of computer simulations of the original Frenkel-Kontorova chains.

The onset of spatiotemporal chaos in a damped sine-Gordon system subjected to a plane wave field as well as its suppression by an additional small-amplitude plane wave field are proposed theoretically and confirmed numerically. The relevance of these findings in the context of nonlinear magnetization waves is discussed.

We discuss a general mechanism explaining the taming effect of phase disorder in external forces on chaotic solitons in damped, driven, Frenkel-Kontorova chains. We deduce analytically an effective random equation of motion governing the dynamics of the soliton center of mass for which we obtain numerically the regions in the control parameter space where chaotic solitons are suppressed. We find that such predictions are in excellent agreement with results of computer simulations of the original Frenkel-Kontorova chains. We show theoretically how such a fundamental mechanism explains recent numerical results concerning extended chaos in arrays of coupled pendula [S. F. Brandt, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 034104 (2006)10.1103/PhysRevLett.96.034104].

The effects of decreasing the impulse transmitted by localized periodic pulses on the chaotic behavior of homogeneous chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators are studied. It is assumed that when the oscillators are driven synchronously, i.e., all driving pulses transmit the same impulse, the chains display chaotic dynamics. It is shown that decreasing the impulse transmitted by the pulses of the two free end oscillators results in regularization with the whole array exhibiting frequency synchronization, irrespective of the chain size. A maximum level of amplitude desynchrony as the pulses of the two end oscillators narrow is typically found, which is explained as the result of two competing universal mechanisms: desynchronization induced by localized heterogeneous pulses and oscillation death of the complete chain induced by drastic decreasing of the impulse transmitted by such localized pulses. These findings demonstrate that decreasing the impulse transmitted by localized external forces can suppress chaos and lead to frequency-locked states in networks of dissipative systems.

We have proposed theoretically and confirmed numerically the possibility of controlling chaotic solitons in damped, driven Frenkel-Kontorova chains subjected to additive bounded noise by weak periodic excitations. Theoretically, we obtained an effective equation of motion governing the dynamics of the soliton center of mass for which we deduced Melnikov's method-based predictions concerning the regions in the control parameter space where homoclinic bifurcations are frustrated. Numerically, we found that such theoretical predictions can be reliably applied to the original Frenkel-Kontorova chains, even for the case of localized application of the soliton-taming excitations, and there is strikingly good agreement between analytical estimates and numerical results.

Well-behaved dynamical properties are found in a dissipative kicked rotator subjected to a periodic string of asymmetric pulses of finite amplitude and width. The stability boundaries of the equilibrium are determined to arbitrary approximation for trigonometric pulses by means of circular harmonic balance, and to first approximation for general elliptic pulses by means of an elliptic harmonic balance method. The bifurcation behavior at the stability boundaries is determined numerically. We show how the extension of the instability region of the equilibrium in pulse parameter space reaches a maximum as the pulse width is varied. We also characterize the dependence of the mean duration of the transients to the equilibrium on the pulse width. The evolution of the basins of attraction of chaotic attractors when solely the pulse width is varied is characterized numerically. Finally, we show that the order-chaos route when solely the width of the pulses is altered appears to be especially rich, including different types of crises. The mechanism underlying these reshaping-induced crises is discussed with the aid of a two-dimensional map.

Theoretical results are presented concerning the reduction of chaotic escape from a potential well by means of a harmonic parametric excitation that satisfies an ultrasubharmonic resonance condition with the escape-inducing excitation. The possibility of incommensurate escape-suppressing excitations is demonstrated by studying rational approximations to the irrational escape-suppressing frequency. The analytical predictions for the suitable amplitudes and initial phases of the escape-suppressing excitation are tested against numerical simulations based on a high-resolution grid of initial conditions. These numerical results indicate that the reduction of escape is reliably achieved for small amplitudes and at, and only at, the predicted initial phases. For the case of irrational escape-suppressing frequencies, the effective escape-reducing initial phases are found to lie close to the accumulation points of the set of suitable initial phases that are associated with the complete series of convergents up to the convergent giving the chosen rational approximation.

General results concerning maintenance or enhancement of chaos are presented for dissipative systems subjected to two harmonic perturbations (one chaos inducing and the other chaos enhancing). The connection with previous results on chaos suppression is also discussed in a general setting. It is demonstrated that, in general, a second harmonic perturbation can reliably play an enhancer or inhibitor role by solely adjusting its initial phase. Numerical results indicate that general theoretical findings concerning periodic chaos-inducing perturbations also work for aperiodic chaos-inducing perturbations, and in arrays of identical chaotic coupled oscillators.
