In two-dimensional superconductors, Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states, induced by the magnetic impurities, extend over long distances giving rise to a long-range hopping model supporting a large number of topological phases with distinct Chern numbers. Here, we study how the electron-electron interactions affect, on a mean-field level, the selection of the realized Chern numbers and the magnitudes of the topological energy gaps in this model. We find that, in the case of an individual choice of the model parameters, the interactions can enhance or reduce the topological gap as well as cause topological phase transitions because of the complex interplay of superconductivity, magnetism, and the large spatial extent of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states. By sampling a large number of realizations of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov lattice models with different model parameters, we show that, statistically, the interactions have no effect on the realized Chern numbers and typical magnitudes of the topological gaps. However, the interactions substantially increase the likelihood of the largest topological gaps in the tails of the energy gap distribution in comparison to the noninteracting case.

We use trajectory averaging to show that the energy dissipated in the nonequilibrium energy-state transitions of a driven two-state system satisfies a fluctuation-dissipation relation. This connection between the average energy dissipation induced by external driving and its fluctuations about equilibrium is preserved by an adiabatic approximation scheme. We use this scheme to obtain the heat statistics of a single-electron box with superconducting leads in the slow-driving regime, where the dissipated heat becomes normally distributed with a relatively high probability to be extracted from the environment rather than dissipated. Accuracy of single-electron currents produced in hybrid turnstiles at high operation frequencies is, among other errors, limited by electrons tunnelling in the wrong direction. Increasing the barrier transparency between the island and the leads, and the source-drain bias helps to suppress these events in a larger frequency range, although they lead to some additional errors. We experimentally demonstrate a driving scheme that suppresses tunnelling in the wrong direction hence extending the range of frequencies for generating accurate single-electron currents. The main feature of this approach is an additional AC signal applied to the bias with twice the frequency as the one applied to the gate electrode. This allows additional modulation of the island chemical potential. By using the new approach under certain parameters, we improve the single-electron current accuracy by one order of magnitude. Finally, we show through experimentally-contrasted calculations that our method can improve accuracy even in devices for which the usual gate driving gives errors $\sim 10^{-3}$ at high frequencies and can bring them under $5\times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 11 pages

Strong, adjustable magnetic couplings are of great importance to all devices based on magnetic materials. Controlling the coupling between adjacent regions of a single magnetic layer, however, is challenging. In this work, we demonstrate strong exchange-based coupling between arbitrarily shaped regions of a single ferrimagnetic layer. This is achieved by spatially patterning the compensation temperature of the ferrimagnet by either oxidation or He + irradiation. The coupling originates at the lateral interface between regions with different compensation temperature and scales inversely with their width. We show that this coupling generates large lateral exchange coupling fields and we demonstrate its application to control the switching of magnetically compensated dots with an electric current. In this paper, we show that magnetic skyrmion nucleation can be controlled using Ga+ ion irradiation, which manipulates the magnetic interface effects (in particular the magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) that govern the stability and energy cost of skyrmions in thin film systems. We systematically and quantitatively investigated what effect these changes have on the nucleation of magnetic skyrmions. Our results indicate that the energy cost of skyrmion nucleation can be reduced up to 26% in the studied dose range and that it scales approximately linearly with the square root of the domain-wall energy density. Moreover, the total number of nucleated skyrmions in irradiated devices after nucleation was found to depend linearly on the ion dose and could be doubled compared to nonirradiated devices. We report on measurements of dissipation and frequency noise at millikelvin temperatures of nanomechanical devices covered with aluminum. A clear excess damping is observed after switching the metallic layer from superconducting to the normal state with a magnetic field. Beyond the standard model of internal tunneling systems coupled to the phonon bath, here we consider the relaxation to the conduction electrons together with the nature of the mechanical dispersion laws for stressed/unstressed devices. With these key ingredients, a model describing the relaxation of two-level systems inside the structure due to interactions with electrons and phonons with well separated timescales captures the data. The ab-initio theory of charge transport in semiconductors typically employs the lowest-order perturbation theory in which electrons interact with one phonon (1ph). This theory is accepted to be adequate to explain the low-field mobility of non-polar semiconductors but has not been tested extensively beyond the low-field regime. Here, we report first-principles calculations of the electric field-dependence of the electron mobility of Si as described by the warm electron coefficient, $\beta$. Although the 1ph theory overestimates the low-field mobility by only around 20%, it overestimates $\beta$ by over a factor of two over a range of temperatures and crystallographic axes. We show that the discrepancy in $\beta$ is reconciled by inclusion of on-shell iterated 2-phonon (2ph) scattering processes, indicating that scattering from higher-order electron-phonon interactions is non-negligible even in non-polar semiconductors. Further, a ~20% underestimate of the low-field mobility with 2ph scattering suggests that non-trivial cancellations may occur in the perturbative expansion of the electron-phonon interaction., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, submitted

We measure telegraph noise of current fluctuations in an electrostatically defined quantum dot in bilayer graphene by real-time detection of single electron tunneling with a capacitively coupled neighboring quantum dot. Suppression of the second and third cumulant (related to shot noise) in a tunable graphene quantum dot is demonstrated experimentally. With this method we demonstrate the ability to measure very low current and noise levels. When two-dimensional van der Waals materials are stacked to build heterostructures, moir\'e patterns emerge from twisted interfaces or from mismatch in lattice constant of individual layers. Relaxation of the atomic positions is a direct, generic consequence of the moir\'e pattern, with many implications for the physical properties. Moir\'e driven atomic relaxation may be naively thought to be restricted to the interfacial layers and thus irrelevant for multi-layered heterostructures. However, we provide experimental evidence for the importance of the three dimensional nature of the relaxation in two types of van der Waals heterostructures: First, in multi-layer graphene twisted on graphite at small twist angles ($\theta\approx0.14^\circ$) we observe propagation of relaxation domains even beyond 18 graphene layers. Second, we show how for multi-layer PdTe$_2$ on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ the moir\'e lattice constant depends on the number of PdTe$_2$ layers. Motivated by the experimental findings, we developed a continuum approach to model multi-layered relaxation processes based on the generalized stacking fault energy functional given by ab-initio simulations. Leveraging the continuum property of the approach enables us to access large scale regimes and achieve agreement with our experimental data for both systems. Furthermore it is well known that the electronic structure of graphene sensitively depends on local lattice deformations. Therefore we study the impact of multi-layered relaxation on the local density of states of the twisted graphitic system. We identify measurable implications for the system, experimentally accessible by scanning tunneling microscopy. Our multi-layered relaxation approach is not restricted to the discussed systems, and can be used to uncover the impact of an interfacial defect on various layered systems of interest., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Much has been learned about the topological transport in real materials. We investigate the interplay between magnetism and topology in the magneto-transport of PrRhC$_2$. The four-fold degeneracy reduces to two-fold followed by non-degenerate Weyl nodes when the orientation of the magnetic quantization axis is changed from easy axis to body-diagonal through face-diagonal. This engenders chirality imbalance between positive and negative chirality Weyl nodes around the Fermi energy. We observe a significant enhancement in the chiral anomaly mediated response such as planar Hall conductivity and longitudinal magneto-conductivity, due to the emergence of chirality imbalance upon orienting the magnetic quantization axis to body-diagonal. The angular variations of the above quantities for different magnetic quantization axis clearly refer to the typical signature of planar Hall effect in Weyl semimetals. Many complex systems can spontaneously oscillate under non-periodic forcing. Such self-oscillators are commonplace in biological and technological assemblies where temporal periodicity is needed, such as the beating of a human heart or the vibration of a cello string. While self-oscillation is well understood in classical non-linear systems and their quantized counterparts, the spontaneous emergence of periodicity in quantum systems without a semi-classical limit is more elusive. Here, we show that this behavior can emerge within the repeated-interaction description of open quantum systems. Specifically, we consider a many-body quantum system that undergoes dissipation due to sequential coupling with auxiliary systems at random times. We develop dynamical symmetry conditions that guarantee an oscillatory long-time state in this setting. The possibility of electrically exciting and detecting magnon currents in magnetic insulators has opened exciting perspectives for transporting spin information in electronic devices. However, the role of the magnetic field and the nonlocal thermal gradients on the magnon transport remain unclear. Here, by performing nonlocal harmonic voltage measurements, we investigate magnon transport in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) films coupled to Pt electrodes. We show that the first harmonic nonlocal voltage captures spin-driven magnon transport in TmIG, as expected, and the second harmonic is dominated by thermoelectric voltages driven by current-induced thermal gradients at the detector. The magnon diffusion length in TmIG is found to be λm∼0.3μm at 0.5 T and gradually decays to λm∼0.2μm at 0.8 T, which we attribute to the suppression of the magnon relaxation time due to the increase of the Gilbert damping with field. By performing current-, magnetic field-, and distance-dependent nonlocal and local measurements we demonstrate that the second harmonic nonlocal voltage exhibits five thermoelectric contributions, which originate from the nonlocal spin Seebeck effect and the ordinary, planar, spin, and anomalous Nernst effects. Controlling the temperature of nano-scale quantum systems is becoming increasingly important in the efforts to develop thermal devices such as quantum heat valves, heat engines, and refrigerators, and to explore fundamental concepts in quantum thermodynamics. In practice, however, it is challenging to generate arbitrary time-dependent temperatures, similarly to what has been achieved for electronic voltage pulses. To overcome this problem, we here propose a fully quantum mechanical scheme to control the time-dependent environment temperature of an open quantum system. To this end, we consider a collection of quantum harmonic oscillators that mediate the interactions between the quantum system and a thermal reservoir, and we show how an effective time-dependent temperature can be realized by modulating the oscillator frequencies in time. By doing so, we can apply effective temperature pulses to the quantum system, and it can be cooled below the temperature of the environment. Surprisingly, the scheme can be realized using only a few oscillators, and our proposal thereby paves the way for controlling the temperature of open quantum systems., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host deeply bound excitons interacting with itinerant electrons, and as such they represent an exciting new quantum many-body Bose-Fermi mixture. Here, we demonstrate that electrons interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons can realise a two-dimensional topological $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor. Using strong coupling Eliashberg theory, we show that this is caused by an attractive interaction mediated by the BEC, which overcompensates the repulsive Coulomb interaction between the electrons. The hybrid light-matter nature of the BEC is crucial for achieving this, since it can be used to reduce retardation effects and increase the mediated interaction in regimes important for pairing. We finally show how the great flexibility of TMDs allows one to tune the critical temperature of the topological superconducting phase to be within experimental reach., 12 pages, 8 figures

The emergence of a topological superconducting state in van der Waals heterostructures provides a new platform for exploring novel strategies to control topological superconductors. In particular, impurities in van der Waals heterostructures, generically featuring a moire pattern, can potentially lead to the unique interplay between atomic and moire length scales, a feature absent in generic topological superconductors. Here we address the impact of non-magnetic impurities on a topological moire superconductor, both in the weak and strong regime, considering both periodic arrays and single impurities in otherwise pristine infinite moire systems. We demonstrate a fine interplay between impurity-induced modes and the moire length, leading to radically different spectral and topological properties depending on the relative impurity location and moire lengths. Our results highlight the key role of impurities in van der Waals heterostructures featuring moire patterns, revealing the key interplay between length and energy scales in artificial moire systems., 14 pages, 7 figures

We derive from a microscopic model the effective interaction between molecular spins, including their crystal field anisotropy (i.e., the presence of nonlinear spin terms) and their multilevel structure. Finally, we calculate the long-time dynamics for a pair of interacting molecular spins using the method of multiple-scale analysis. This allows us to find a set of two-qudit gates that can be realized for a specific choice of molecular spins and to determine the time required for their implementation. A pure spin current is predicted to occur when an external magnetic field and a linearly inhomogeneous spin-only field are appropriately aligned. Under these conditions (such as originate from nuclear contact hyperfine fields that do not affect orbital motion) a linear, spin-dependent dispersion for free electrons emerges from the Landau Hamiltonian. The result is that spins of opposite orientation flow in opposite directions giving rise to a pure spin current. A classical model of the spin and charge dynamics reveals intuitive aspects of the full quantum mechanical solution. Thermoelectric materials open a way to harness dissipated energy and make electronic devices less energy-demanding. Heat-to-electricity conversion requires materials with a strongly suppressed thermal conductivity but still high electronic conduction. This goal is largely achieved with the help of nanostructured materials, even if the bulk counterpart is not highly efficient. In this work, we investigate how thermoelectric efficiency is enhanced by many-body effects in graphene nanoribbons at low temperature. To this end, starting from the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model within a mean-field approximation, we carry out an extensive numerical study of the impact of electron-electron interactions on the thermoelectric efficiency of graphene nanoribbons with armchair or zigzag edges. We consider two different regimes, namely trivial and topological insulator. We find that electron-electron interactions are crucial for the appearance of interference phenomena that give rise to an enhancement of the thermoelectric efficiency of the nanoribbons. 9 pages, 7 figures, PRB accepted, The conductance of electrostatic wire junctions in bilayer graphene, classified as trivial-trivial or trivial-topological regarding the confinement character on each junction side, is calculated. The topological side always corresponds to a kink-antikink system, as required for a proper connection with a trivial side. We report a conductance quench of the trivial-topological junction, with a conductance {\it near} quantization to $4e^2/h$, which is only half of the maximum value allowed by the Chern number of a kink-antikink system. The analysis allowed us to uncover the existence of a chiral edge mode in the trivial wire under quite general conditions. Understanding physical properties of quantum emitters strongly interacting with quantized electromagnetic modes is one of the primary goals in the emergent field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED). When the light-matter coupling strength is comparable to or even exceeds energies of elementary excitations, conventional approaches based on perturbative treatment of light-matter interactions, two-level description of matter excitations, and photon-number truncation are no longer sufficient. Here we study in and out of equilibrium properties of waveguide QED in such nonperturbative regimes on the basis of a comprehensive and rigorous theoretical approach using an asymptotic decoupling unitary transformation. We uncover several surprising features ranging from symmetry-protected many-body bound states in the continuum to strong renormalization of the effective mass and potential; the latter may explain recent experiments demonstrating cavity-induced changes in chemical reactivity as well as enhancements of ferromagnetism or superconductivity. To illustrate our general results with concrete examples, we use our formalism to study a model of coupled cavity arrays, which is relevant to experiments in superconducting qubits interacting with microwave resonators or atoms coupled to photonic crystals. We examine the relation between our results and delocalization-localization transition in the spin-boson model; notably, we point out that a reentrant transition can occur in the regimes where the coupling strength becomes the dominant energy scale. 14 pags., 11 figs., 3 apps., The unavoidable coupling of quantum systems to external degrees of freedom leads to dissipative (nonunitary) dynamics, which can be radically different from closed-system scenarios. Such open quantum system dynamics is generally described by Lindblad master equations, whose dynamical and steady-state properties are challenging to obtain, especially in the many-particle regime. Here, we introduce a method to deal with these systems based on the calculation of a (dissipative) lattice Green's function with a real-space decimation technique. Compared to other methods, such a technique enables us to obtain compact analytical expressions for the dynamics and steady-state properties, such as asymptotic decays or correlation lengths. We illustrate the power of this method with several examples of driven-dissipative bosonic chains of increasing complexity, including the Hatano-Nelson model. Optical drives at terahertz and midinfrared frequencies in quantum materials are increasingly used to reveal the nonlinear dynamics of collective modes in correlated many-body systems and their interplay with electromagnetic waves. Recent experiments demonstrated several surprising optical properties of transient states induced by driving, including the appearance of photo-induced edges in the reflectivity in cuprate superconductors (SCs), observed both below and above the equilibrium transition temperature. Furthermore, in other driven materials, reflection coefficients larger than unity have been observed. In this paper we demonstrate that unusual optical properties of photoexcited systems can be understood from the perspective of a Floquet system, a system with periodically modulated parameters originating from pump-induced oscillations of a collective mode. These oscillations lead to an effective Floquet system with periodically modulated parameters. We present a general phenomenological model of reflectivity from Floquet materials, which takes into account parametric generation of excitation pairs. We find a universal phase diagram of drive-induced features in reflectivity which evidence a competition between driving and dissipation. To illustrate our general analysis, we apply our formalism to two concrete examples motivated by recent experiments: A single plasmon band, which describes Josephson plasmons (JPs) in layered SCs, and a phonon-polariton system, which describes upper and lower polaritons in materials such as insulating SiC. Finally, we demonstrate that our model can be used to provide an accurate fit to results of phonon-pump-terahertz-probe experiments in the high-temperature SC YBa2Cu3O6.5. Flat-band systems are a promising platform for realizing exotic collective ground states with spontaneously broken symmetry because the electron-electron interactions dominate over the kinetic energy. A collective ground state of particular interest is the chased after exciton condensate (EC). However, in flat band systems other collective ground states can compete with an EC phase, and the conventional treatment of the effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations predicts the EC phase should be unstable. Here, using double twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) heterostructures as an example, we show that for realistic interaction strengths the EC phase is favored with respect to other TBLG's phases -- orbital magnetism and superconductivity -- when the TBLGs have opposite doping, and that the quantum metric of the Bloch wave functions stabilizes the EC, reversing the conclusion that would be drawn from the conventional approach in which quantum metric contributions are neglected. We investigate the proximity spin-orbit and exchange couplings in ABA and ABC trilayer graphene encapsulated within monolayers of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides and the ferromagnetic semiconductor Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Employing first-principles calculations we obtain the electronic structures of the multilayer stacks and extract the relevant proximity-induced orbital and spin interaction parameters by fitting the low-energy bands to model Hamiltonians. We also demonstrate the tunability of the proximity effects by a transverse electric field. Using the model Hamiltonians we also study mixed spin-orbit/exchange coupling encapsulation, which allows to tailor the spin interactions very efficiently by the applied field. We also summarize the spin-orbit physics of bare ABA, ABC, and ABB trilayers, and provide, along with the first-principles results of the electronic band structures, density of states, spin splittings, and electric-field tunabilities of the bands, qualitative understanding of the observed behavior and realistic model parameters as a resource for model simulations of transport and correlation physics in trilayer graphene., Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables

We present a study of even parity Rydberg exciton states in cuprous oxide using time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG). Excitonic states with principal quantum number n = 5 - 12 were excited by nanosecond pulses around 1143 nm. Using time-resolved single-photon counting, the coherently generated second harmonic was isolated both temporally and spectroscopically from inelastic emission due to lower-lying free and bound excitonic states, which included narrow resonances at 1.99 eV associated with an exceptional lifetime of 641 $\pm$ 7 $\mu$s. The near transform-limited excitation bandwidth enabled detailed measurements of the exciton lineshape and position, from which we obtained values for the quantum defects of the S and D excitonic states associated with the appropriate crystal symmetries. Odd parity P and F excitonic states were also observed, in accordance with predicted quadrupole-allowed two-photon excitation processes. We compared our measurements to conventional one-photon spectroscopy in the same sample, and find that the SHG spectrum is cut off at a lower principal quantum number (n = 12 vs n = 15). We attribute this effect to a combination of spatial inhomogeneities and local heating, and discuss the prospects for observing higher principal quantum number even parity states in future experiments., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

We demonstrate parametric coupling between two modes of a silicon nitride membrane. We achieve the coupling by applying an oscillating voltage to a sharp metal tip that approaches the membrane surface to within a few 100 nm. When the voltage oscillation frequency is equal to the mode frequency difference, the modes exchange energy periodically and faster than their free energy decay rate. This flexible method can potentially be useful for rapid state control and transfer between modes, and is an important step toward parametric spin sensing experiments with membrane resonators., Physical Review Letters, 128 (9), ISSN:0031-9007, ISSN:1079-7114

We report on transport experiments through high-mobility gate-tunable undoped InSb quantum wells (QWs). Due to the elimination of any Si modulation doping, the gate-defined two-dimensional electron gases in the QWs display a significantly increased mobility of 260000cm2/Vs at a rather low density of 2.4×1011cm-2. Using magnetotransport experiments, we characterize spin-orbit interactions by measuring weak antilocalization. Furthermore, by measuring Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in tilted magnetic fields, we find that the g factor agrees with k·p theory calculations at low magnetic fields but grows with spin polarization and carrier density at high magnetic fields. Additionally, signatures of Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetism are found at filling factor ν=2 for tilt angles where the Landau level energy equals the Zeeman energy. Despite the high mobility, the undoped InSb QWs exhibit no fractional quantum Hall effect up to magnetic fields of 25 T., Physical Review Research, 4 (1), ISSN:2643-1564

We discuss the resonant activation phenomenon on a Josephson junction due to the coupling of the Josephson system with axions. We show how such an effect can be exploited for axion detection. A nonmonotonic behavior, with a minimum, of the mean switching time from the superconducting to the resistive state versus the ratio of the axion energy and the Josephson plasma energy is found. We demonstrate how variations in switching times make it possible to detect the presence of the axion field. An experimental protocol for observing axions through their coupling with a Josephson system is proposed.

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) realizes a highly tunable, strongly interacting system featuring superconductivity and various correlated insulating states. We establish gate-defined wires in TBG with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling as $(i)$ a tool for revealing the nature of correlated insulators and $(ii)$ a platform for Majorana-based topological qubits. In particular, we show that the band structure of a gate-defined wire immersed in an `inter-valley coherent' correlated insulator inherits electrically detectable fingerprints of symmetry breaking native to the latter. Surrounding the wire by a superconducting TBG region on one side and an inter-valley coherent correlated insulator on the other further enables the formation of Majorana zero modes--possibly even at zero magnetic field depending on the precise symmetry-breaking order present. Our proposal not only introduces a highly gate-tunable topological qubit medium relying on internally generated proximity effects, but can also shed light on the Cooper-pairing mechanism in TBG., 7 pages, 39 pages appendix (v2: new references and additional discussion in appendix)

This work introduces the so-called synchrosqueezed wavelet transform, to shed light on the dipolar fluctuations of a thermal ensemble of nuclear spins in a diamond crystal structure, hyperfine-coupled to a central spin. The raw time series of the nuclear spin bath coherent dynamics is acquired through the two-point correlation function computed using the cluster correlation expansion method. The dynamics can be conveniently analyzed according to zero-, single-, and double-quantum transitions derived from the dipolar pairwise spin flips. We show that in the early-time behavior when the coherence is preserved in the spin ensemble, the Overhauser field fluctuations are modulated by dipole-dipole-induced small inhomogeneous detunings of nearly resonant transitions within the bath. The resulting beating extending over relatively longer time intervals is featured on the scalograms where both temporal and spectral behaviors of nuclear spin noise are unveiled simultaneously. Moreover, a second kind of beating that affects faster dynamics is readily discernible, originating from the inhomogeneous spread of the hyperfine coupling of each nucleus with the central spin. Additionally, any quadrupolar nuclei within the bath imprint as beating residing in the zero-quantum channel. The nuclear spin environment can be directionally probed by orienting the hyperfine axis. Thereby, crucial spatial information about the closely separated spin clusters surrounding the central spin are accessible. Thus, a wavelet-based post processing can facilitate the identification of proximal nuclear spins as revealed by their unique beating patterns on the scalograms. Finally, when these features are overwhelmed by either weakly or strongly coupled classical noise sources, we demonstrate the efficacy of thresholding techniques in the wavelet domain in denoising contaminated scalograms., Published version in contents; wavelet domain denoising analysis is added; 15 pages, 8 figures

Levitated nanodiamonds containing negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers (${\text{NV}}^{-}$) have been proposed as a platform to generate macroscopic spatial superpositions. Requirements for this include having a long ${\text{NV}}^{-}$ spin coherence time, which necessitates formulating a dynamical decoupling strategy in which the regular spin flips do not cancel the growth of the superposition through the Stern-Gerlach effect in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Here, we propose a scheme to place a $250$-nm-diameter diamond in a superposition with spatial separation of over $250$ nm, while incorporating dynamical decoupling. We achieve this by letting a diamond fall for $2.4$ m through a magnetic structure, including $1.13$ m in an inhomogeneous region generated by magnetic teeth., Comment: Version 1: 6 pages, 2 figures. We study the emergence of magnetism and its interplay with structural properties in a two-dimensional molecular crystal of cyclacenes, using density functional theory (DFT). Isolated cyclacenes with an even number of fused benzenes host two unpaired electrons in two topological protected zero modes, at the top and bottom carbon rings that form the molecule. We show that, in the gas phase, electron repulsion promotes an open-shell singlet with strong intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchange. We consider a closed packing triangular lattice crystal phase and we find a strong dependence of the band structure and magnetic interactions on the rotation angle of the cyclacenes with respect to the crystal lattice vectors. The orientational ground state maximizes the intermolecular hybridization, yet local moments survive. Intermolecular exchange is computed to be antiferromagnetic, and DFT predicts a broken symmetry 120∘ spin phase reflecting the frustration of the intermolecular spin coupling. Thus, the cyclacene crystal realizes a bilayer of two antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1/2 triangular lattices. Our results provide a bottom-up route towards carbon based strongly correlated platforms in two dimensions. We report exciton-mediated coupling between microwave and optical fields in cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) at low temperatures. Rydberg excitonic states with principal quantum number up to $n=12$ were observed at 4~K using both one-photon (absorption) and two-photon (second harmonic generation) spectroscopy. Near resonance with an excitonic state, the addition of a microwave field significantly changed the absorption lineshape, and added sidebands at the microwave frequency to the coherent second harmonic. Both effects showed a complex dependence on $n$ and angular momentum, $l$. All of these features are in semi-quantitative agreement with a model based on intraband electric dipole transitions between Rydberg exciton states. With a simple microwave antenna we already reach a regime where the microwave coupling (Rabi frequency) is comparable to the nonradiatively broadened linewidth of the Rydberg excitons. The results provide a new way to manipulate excitonic states, and open up the possibility of a cryogenic microwave to optical transducer based on Rydberg excitons., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

Spin transport is crucial for future spintronic devices operating at bandwidths up to the terahertz range. In F|N thin-film stacks made of a ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic layer F and a normal-metal layer N, spin transport is mediated by (1) spin-polarized conduction electrons and/or (2) torque between electron spins. To identify a crossover from (1) to (2), we study laser-driven spin currents in F|Pt stacks where F consists of model materials with different degrees of electrical conductivity. For the magnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet, gadolinium iron garnet (GIG) and γ−Fe2O3, identical dynamics is observed. It arises from the terahertz interfacial spin Seebeck effect (SSE), is fully determined by the relaxation of the electrons in the metal layer, and provides a rough estimate of the spin-mixing conductance of the GIG/Pt and γ−Fe2O3/Pt interfaces. Remarkably, in the half-metallic ferrimagnet Fe3O4 (magnetite), our measurements reveal two spin-current components with opposite direction. The slower, positive component exhibits SSE dynamics and is assigned to torque-type magnon excitation of the A- and B-spin sublattices of Fe3O4. The faster, negative component arises from the pyrospintronic effect and can consistently be assigned to ultrafast demagnetization of minority-spin hopping electrons. This observation supports the magneto-electronic model of Fe3O4. The Haldane phase for antiferromagnetic spin-1 chains is a celebrated topological state of matter, featuring gapped excitations and fractional spin-1/2 edge states. Here, we provide numerical evidence that this phase can be realized with a Hubbard model at half filling, where each $s=1$ spin is stored in a four-site fermionic structure. We find that the noninteracting limit of our proposed model describes a one-dimensional topological insulator, and we conjecture it to be adiabatically connected to the Haldane phase. We demonstrate the feasibility of the time-linear scaling formulation of the $GW$ method [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 124}, 076601 (2020)] for {\it ab initio} simulations of optically driven two-dimensional materials. The time-dependent $GW$ equations are derived and solved numerically in the basis of Bloch states. We address carrier multiplication and relaxation in photo-excited graphene and find deviations from the typical exponential behavior predicted by the Markovian Boltzmann approach. For resonantly pumped semiconductor we discover a self-sustained screening cascade leading to the Mott transition of coherent excitons. Our results draw attention to the importance of non-Markovian and dynamical screening effects in out-of-equilibrium phenomena., 6 pages, 4 figures

Achieving strong coupling between light and matter excitations in hybrid systems is a benchmark for the implementation of quantum technologies. We recently proposed [arXiv:2110.02984] that strong single-particle coupling between magnons and light can be realized in a magnetized epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium, in which magneto-optical effects are enhanced. Here we present a detailed derivation of the magnon-photon coupling Hamiltonian in dispersive media both for degenerate and non-degenerate optical modes, and show the enhancement of the coupling near the ENZ frequency. Moreover, we show that the coupling of magnons to plane-wave non-degenerate Voigt modes vanishes at specific frequencies due to polarization selection rules tuned by dispersion. Finally, we present specific results using a Lorentz dispersion model. Our results pave the way for the design of dispersive optomagnonic systems, providing a general theoretical framework for describing engineering ENZ-based optomagnonic systems., 20 pages, 8 figures

Junctions composed of two crossed graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been theoretically proposed as electron beam splitters where incoming electron waves in one GNR can be split coherently into propagating waves in two outgoing terminals with nearly equal amplitude and zero back-scattering. Here we scrutinize this effect for devices composed of narrow zigzag GNRs taking explicitly into account the role of Coulomb repulsion that leads to spin-polarized edge states within mean-field theory. We show that the beam-splitting effect survives the opening of the well-known correlation gap and, more strikingly, that a spin-dependent scattering potential emerges which spin polarizes the transmitted electrons in the two outputs. By studying different ribbons and intersection angles we provide evidence that this is a general feature with edge-polarized nanoribbons. A near-perfect polarization can be achieved by joining several junctions in series. Within Density Functional Theory, we have investigated the coalescence dynamics of two superfluid helium nanodroplets hosting vortex lines in different relative orientations, which are drawn towards each other by the Van der Waals mutual attraction. We have found a rich phenomenology depending on how the vortex lines are oriented. In particular, when a vortex and anti-vortex lines are present in the merging droplets, a dark soliton develops at the droplet contact region, which eventually decays into vortex rings. Reconnection events are observed between the vortex lines or rings, leading to the creation of more vortices. Our simulations show the interplay between vortex creation and reconnections, as well as the effect of the droplet surface which pins the vortex ends and, by reflecting short-wavelength excitations produced by the interactions between vortices, strongly affects the droplet final state. Additional vorticity is nucleated in the proximity of surface indentations produced in the course of the dynamics, which in turn interact with other vortices present in the droplets. These effects, obviously absent in the case of bulk liquid helium, show that the droplet surface may act as a multiplier of vortex reconnections. The analysis of the energy spectrum shows that vortex-antivortex ring annihilation, as well as vortex-antivortex reconnections, yields roton bursts of different intensity., 11 pages, 11 figures + Supplemental Material

The timescale of electronic cooling is an important parameter controlling the performance of devices based on quantum materials for optoelectronic, thermoelectric, and thermal management applications. In most conventional materials, cooling proceeds via the emission of phonons, a process that can bottleneck the carrier relaxation dynamics, thus degrading the device performance. Here we present the theory of near-field radiative heat transfer that occurs when a two-dimensional electron system is coupled via the nonretarded Coulomb interaction to a three-dimensional bulk that can behave as a very efficient electronic heat sink. We apply our theory to study the cooling dynamics of surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators and of graphene in proximity to small-gap bulk materials. The “Coulomb cooling” we introduce is alternative to the conventional phonon-mediated cooling, can be very efficient, and can dominate the cooling dynamics under certain circumstances. Our calculations of ferromagnetic spin chains on s-wave superconductors show that the energy oscillations of edge states with the chain's length are due to a moiré pattern emerging from the electronic interactions in the superconductor and the discreteness of the spin-chain lattice. By modifying the spin lattice, the moiré dispersion of edge states can be controlled. In particular, we can engineer nondispersive edge states that remain at fixed energy regardless of the size distribution of the spin chains. We present the derivation and code implementation of a first-principles methodology to calculate the lattice-mediated contributions to the bulk flexoelectric tensor. The approach is based on our recent analytical long-wavelength extension of density-functional perturbation theory [Royo and Stengel, Phys. Rev. X 9, 021050 (2019)], and avoids the cumbersome numerical derivatives with respect to the wave vector that were adopted in previous implementations. To substantiate our results, we revisit and numerically validate the sum rules that relate flexoelectricity and uniform elasticity by generalizing them to regimes where finite forces and stresses are present. We also revisit the definition of the elastic tensor under stress, especially in regards to the existing linear-response implementation. Superconducting spin qubits, also known as Andreev spin qubits, promise to combine the benefits of superconducting qubits and spin qubits defined in quantum dots. While most approaches to control these qubits rely on controlling the spin degree of freedom via the supercurrent, superconducting spin qubits can also be coupled to each other via the superconductor to implement two-qubit quantum gates. We theoretically investigate the interaction between superconducting spin qubits in the weak tunneling regime and concentrate on the effect of spin-orbit interaction (SOI), which can be large in semiconductor-based quantum dots and thereby offers an additional tuning parameter for quantum gates. We find analytically that the effective interaction between two superconducting spin qubits consists of Ising, Heisenberg, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and can be tuned by the superconducting phase difference, the tunnel barrier strength, or the SOI parameters. The Josephson current becomes dependent on SOI and spin orientations. We demonstrate that this interaction can be used for fast controlled phase-flip gates with a fidelity >99.99%. We propose a scalable network of superconducting spin qubits which is suitable for implementing the surface code.

We present a study on the lifting of degeneracy of the size-quantized energy levels in an electrostatically defined quantum point contact in bilayer graphene by the application of in-plane magnetic fields. We observe a Zeeman spin splitting of the first three subbands, characterized by effective Land\'{e} $g$-factors that are enhanced by confinement and interactions. In the gate-voltage dependence of the conductance, a shoulder-like feature below the lowest subband appears, which we identify as a $0.7$ anomaly stemming from the interaction-induced lifting of the band degeneracy. We employ a phenomenological model of the $0.7$ anomaly to the gate-defined channel in bilayer graphene subject to in-plane magnetic field. Based on the qualitative theoretical predictions for the conductance evolution with increasing magnetic field, we conclude that the assumption of an effective spontaneous spin splitting is capable of describing our observations, while the valley degree of freedom remains degenerate.

Detection of single, itinerant microwave photons is an important functionality for emerging quantum technology applications as well as of fundamental interest in quantum thermodynamics experiments on heat transport. In a recent experiment [W. Khan et al., Nat. Commun. 12, 5130 (2021)], it was demonstrated that a double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to a microwave resonator can act as an efficient and continuous photodetector by converting an incoming stream of photons to an electrical photocurrent. In the experiment, average photon and electron flows were analyzed. Here we theoretically investigate, in the same system, the fluctuations of the photocurrent through the DQD for a coherent microwave drive of the resonator. We consider both the low frequency full counting statistics as well as the finite-frequency noise (FFN) of the photocurrent. Numerical results and analytical expressions in limiting cases are complemented by a mean-field approach neglecting dot-resonator correlations, providing a compelling and physically transparent picture of the photocurrent statistics. We find that for ideal, unity efficiency detection, the fluctuations of the charge current reproduce the Poisson statistics of the incoming photons, while the statistics for non-ideal detection is sub-Poissonian. Moreover, the FFN provides information of the system parameter dependence of detector short-time properties. Our results give novel insight into microwave photon-electron interactions in hybrid dot-resonator systems and provide guidance for further experiments on continuous detection of single microwave photons., 16 pages, 4 figures

Hole spin qubits in quasi one-dimensional structures are a promising platform for quantum information processing because of the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI). We present analytical results and discuss device designs that optimize the SOI in Ge semiconductors. We show that at the magnetic field values at which qubits are operated, orbital effects of magnetic fields can strongly affect the response of the spin qubit. We study one-dimensional hole systems in Ge under the influence of electric and magnetic fields applied perpendicularly to the device. In our theoretical description, we include these effects exactly. The orbital effects lead to a strong renormalization of the g-factor. We find a sweet-spot of the nanowire (NW) g-factor where charge noise is strongly suppressed and present an effective low-energy model that captures the dependence of the SOI on the electromagnetic fields. Moreover, we compare properties of NWs with square and circular cross-sections with ones of gate-defined one-dimensional channels in two-dimensional Ge heterostructures. Interestingly, the effective model predicts a flat band ground state for fine-tuned electric and magnetic fields. By considering a quantum dot (QD) harmonically confined by gates, we demonstrate that the NW g-factor sweet spot is retained in the QD. Our calculations reveal that this sweet spot can be designed to coincide with the maximum of the SOI, yielding highly coherent qubits with large Rabi frequencies. We also study the effective g-factor of NWs grown along different high symmetry axes and find that our model derived for isotropic semiconductors is valid for the most relevant growth directions of non-isotropic Ge NWs. Moreover, a NW grown along one of the three main crystallographic axes shows the largest SOI. Our results show that the isotropic approximation is not justified in Ge in all cases.

We revisit the problem of surface states in semiconductors with inverted-band structures, such as α-Sn and HgTe. We unravel the confusion that arose over the past decade regarding the origin of the surface states, their topological nature, and the role of strain. Within a single minimalistic description, we reconcile different solutions found in the 1980s with the results obtained from modern-day numerical simulations, allowing us to unambiguously identify all branches of surface states around the Γ point of the Brillouin zone in different regimes. We also show that strain is a smooth deformation to the surface states, following the usual continuity principle of physics, and not leading to any drastic change of the physical properties in these materials, in contrast to what has recently been advanced in the literature. We consider biaxial in-plane strain that is either tensile or compressive, leading to different branches of surface states for topological insulators and Dirac semimetals, respectively. We analyze the micromagnetics of short longitudinal modulations of a high-magnetization material in cylindrical nanowires made of a soft-magnetic material of lower magnetization such as permalloy, combining magnetic microscopy, analytical modeling, and micromagnetic simulations. The mismatch of magnetization induces curling of magnetization around the axis in the modulations, in an attempt to screen the interfacial magnetic charges. The curling angle increases with modulation length, until a plateau is reached with nearly full charge screening for a specific length scale~$\Delta_\mathrm{mod}$, larger than the dipolar exchange length of any of the two materials. The curling circulation can be switched by the Oersted field arising from a charge current with typical magnitude $10^{12} A/m^{2}$ for a diameter of $\sim$100 nm, and reaching a maximum for $\Delta_\mathrm{mod}$.

Cooper pair splitting (CPS) is a way to create spatially separated, entangled electron pairs. To this day, CPS is often identified in experiments as a spatial current correlation. However, such correlations can arise even in the absence of CPS, when a quantum dot is strongly coupled to the superconductor, and a subgap Shiba state is formed. Here, we present a detailed experimental characterization of those spatial current correlations, as the tunnel barrier strength between the quantum dot and the neighboring normal electrode is tuned. The correlation of the non-local signal and the barrier strength reveals a competition between CPS and the non-local probing of the Shiba state. We describe our experiment with a simple transport model, and obtain the tunnel couplings of our device by fitting the model's prediction to the measured conductance correlation curve. We study theoretically the effect of a rotating electric field on a diffusive nanowire and find an effect that is analogous to spin pumping, which refers to the generation of spin through a rotating magnetic field. The electron spin couples to the electric field because the particle motion induces an effective magnetic field in its rest frame. In a diffusive system the velocity of the particle, and therefore also its effective magnetic field, rapidly and randomly changes direction. Nevertheless, we demonstrate analytically and via a physical argument why the combination of the two effects described above produces a finite magnetization along the axis of rotation. This manifests as a measurable spin-voltage in the range of tens of microvolts., 5 (+6) pages, 3 (+1) figures
