We propose a framework to study the onset of Anderson localization in disordered systems. The idea is to expose waves propagating in a random scattering environment to a sequence of short dephasing pulses. The system responds through coherence peaks forming at specific echo times, each echo representing a particular process of quantum interference. We suggest a concrete realization for cold gases, where quantum interferences are observed in the momentum distribution of matter waves in a laser speckle potential, and discuss in detail corresponding echoes in momentum space for sequences of one and two dephasing pulses. Our proposal defines a challenging but arguably realistic framework promising to yield unprecedented insight into the mechanisms of Anderson localization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the noise spectrum experienced by few nanometer deep nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond as a function of depth, surface coating, magnetic field and temperature. Analysis reveals a double- Lorentzian noise spectrum consistent with a surface electronic spin bath in the low frequency regime, along with a faster noise source attributed to surface-modified phononic coupling. These results shed new light on the mechanisms responsible for surface noise affecting shallow spins at semiconductor interfaces, and suggests possible directions for further studies. We demonstrate dynamical decoupling from the surface noise, paving the way to applications ranging from nanoscale NMR to quantum networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Signatures of Anderson localization in the momentum distribution of a cold atom cloud after a quantum quench are studied. We consider a quasi-one-dimensional cloud initially prepared in a well-defined momentum state, and expanding for some time in a disorder speckle potential. Quantum interference generates a peak in the forward scattering amplitude which, unlike the common weak localization backscattering peak, is a signature of strong Anderson localization. We present a nonperturbative, and fully time resolved description of the phenomenon, covering the entire diffusion-to-localization crossover. Axial dispersion rates of particles within horizontal rotating cylinders have been calculated for a decade of cylinder diameters. Throughout the range studied the rate of axial dispersion was found to be independent of the cylinder diameter. This phenomenon has been investigated further by spatially resolving the local contribution to the axial dispersion coefficient. This analysis demonstrates that, although the highest rates of axial dispersion occur at the free surface of the bed, there is a significant contribution to axial dispersion throughout the flowing region of the bed. Finally, based on an analogy with a Galton board, a linear relationship is proposed between the local rate of axial dispersion within a horizontal rotating cylinder and the product of the local particle concentration and the local shear rate in a plane perpendicular to the cylinder axis. The accuracy in determining the quantum state of a system depends on the type of measurement performed. Homodyne and heterodyne detection are the two main schemes in continuous-variable quantum information. The former leads to a direct reconstruction of the Wigner function of the state, whereas the latter samples its Husimi Q function. We experimentally demonstrate that heterodyne detection outperforms homodyne detection for almost all Gaussian states, the details of which depend on the squeezing strength and thermal noise. The discrete element method has been used to examine axial dispersion within rotating cylinders containing two sizes of particle. Two bed configurations are considered: initially segregated, which consists of a pulse (narrow axial band) of small particles within a bed of large particles, and initially mixed, in which the cylinder is loaded with a homogeneous mixture of the two particle sizes. The dispersion of the small particles within initially segregated beds is found to depend strongly on the initial length of the pulse of small particles. Initially mixed beds are found to undergo a transient period in which the small particles disperse rapidly. Following this transient, axial dispersion of both particles sizes is found to follow Fick's second law, in that the mean squared deviation of the axial position of the particles is proportional to time. Axial dispersion coefficients have been calculated for initially mixed beds that have reached steady state; the axial dispersion coefficients of both particle sizes decrease as the volume fraction of small particles is increased. We suggest a scheme to implement a universal set of non-Abelian geometric transformations for a single logical qubit composed of three superconducting qubits coupled to a single cavity. The scheme utilizes an adiabatic evolution in a rotating frame induced by the effective tripod Hamiltonian which is achieved by longitudinal driving of the qubits. The proposal is experimentally feasible with the current state of the art and could serve as a first proof of principle for geometric quantum computing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generation of quasiparticle-hole pairs in gapped graphene monolayers in the combined field of two counterpropagating light waves is studied. The process represents an analog of electron-positron pair production from the vacuum of quantum electrodynamics (QED) by the Breit-Wheeler effect. We show, however, that the two-dimensional structure of graphene causes some striking differences between both scenarios. In particular, contrary to the QED case, it allows for nonzero pair production rates at the energy threshold when the Breit-Wheeler reaction proceeds nonlinearly with absorption of three photons. We investigate the temporal evolution of molecular frame angular distributions of Auger electrons emitted during ultrafast dissociation of HCl following a resonant single-photon excitation. The electron emission pattern changes its shape from that of a molecular s orbital to that of an atomic p state as the system evolves from a molecule into two separated atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen impurities help to stabilize the negatively-charged-state of NV- in diamond, whereas magnetic fluctuations from nitrogen spins lead to decoherence of NV- qubits. It is not known what donor concentration optimizes these conflicting requirements. Here we used 10-MeV 15N3+ ion implantation to create NV- in ultrapure diamond. Optically detected magnetic resonance of single centers revealed a high creation yield of 40 ± 3% from 15N3+ ions and an additional yield of 56 ± 3% from 14N impurities. High-temperature anneal was used to reduce residual defects, and charge stable NV-, even in a dilute 14N impurity concentration of 0.06 ppb were created with long coherence times. We find clear signatures of spin-dependent negative differential resistance in compound systems comprising a graphene nanoribbon and a set of ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on top of it. The periodic array of ferromagnetic strips induces a proximity exchange splitting of the electronic states in graphene, resulting in the appearance of a superlattice with a spin-dependent energy spectrum. The electric current through the device can be highly polarized and both the current and its polarization manifest nonmonotonic dependence on the bias voltage. The device operates therefore as an Esaki spin diode, which opens possibilities to design new spintronic circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the past 15 years a novel decay mechanism of excited atoms has been discovered and investigated. This so-called interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) involves the chemical environment of the electronically excited atom: the excitation energy is transferred (in many cases over long distances) to a neighbor of the initially excited particle usually ionizing that neighbor. It turned out that ICD is a very common decay route in nature as it occurs across van der Waals and hydrogen bonds. The time evolution of ICD is predicted to be highly complex, as its efficiency strongly depends on the distance of the atoms involved and this distance typically changes during the decay. Here we present the first direct measurement of the temporal evolution of ICD using a novel experimental approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theory of superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures with two ferromagnetic layers predicts the generation of a long-range, odd-in-frequency triplet pairing at noncollinear alignment (NCA) of the magnetizations of the F layers. This triplet pairing has been detected in a Nb/Cu41Ni59/normal conducting- (nc-) Nb/Co/CoOx spin-valve-type proximity effect heterostructure, in which a very thin Nb film between the F layers serves as a spacer of nc metal. The resistance of the sample as a function of an external magnetic field shows that for not too high fields, the system is superconducting at a collinear alignment of the Cu41Ni59 and Co layer magnetic moments but switches to the normal conducting state at a NCA configuration. This indicates that the superconducting transition temperature Tc for NCA is lower than the fixed measuring temperature. The existence of a minimum Tc, at the NCA regime below that one for parallel or antiparallel alignments of the F-layer magnetic moments, is consistent with the theoretical prediction of a singlet superconductivity suppression by the long-range triplet pairing generation. Numerical simulations show that, at the onset of Anderson localization, the momentum distribution of a coherent wave packet launched inside a random potential exhibits, in the forward direction, a novel interference peak that complements the coherent backscattering peak. An explanation of this phenomenon in terms of maximally crossed diagrams predicts that the signal emerges around the localization time and grows on the scale of the Heisenberg time associated with the localization volume. We report a study of quantum oscillations in the high-field magnetoresistance of the nodal-line semimetal HfSiS. In the presence of a magnetic field up to 31 T parallel to the c axis, we observe quantum oscillations originating both from orbits of individual electron and hole pockets, and from magnetic breakdown between these pockets. In particular, we reveal a breakdown orbit enclosing one electron and one hole pocket in the form of a "figure of eight," which is a manifestation of Klein tunneling in momentum space, although in a regime of partial transmission due to the finite separation between the pockets. The observed very strong dependence of the oscillation amplitude on the field angle and the cyclotron masses of the orbits are in agreement with the theoretical predictions for this novel tunneling phenomenon. In the present work a superconducting Co/CoOx/Cu41 Ni59/Nb/Cu41 Ni59 nanoscale thin film heterostructure is investigated, which exhibits a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, depending on the history of magnetic field applied parallel to the film plane. In more detail, around zero applied field, Tc is lower when the field is changed from negative to positive polarity (with respect to the cooling field), compared to the opposite case. We interpret this finding as the result of the generation of the odd-in-frequency triplet component of superconductivity arising at noncollinear orientation of the magnetizations in the Cu41 Ni59 layer adjacent to the CoOx layer. This interpretation is supported by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, which revealed a correlation between details of the magnetic structure and the observed superconducting spin-valve effects. Readout of information is possible at zero applied field and, thus, no permanent field is required to stabilize both states. Consequently, this system represents a superconducting magnetic random access memory element for superconducting electronics. We experimentally study 2p photoionization of neon dimers (Ne2) at a photon energy of hν = 36.56 eV. By postselection of ionization events which lead to a dissociation into Ne+ + Ne we obtain the photoelectron angular emission distribution in the molecular frame. This distribution is symmetric with respect to the direction of the charged vs neutral fragment. It shows an inverted Cohen-Fano double slit interference pattern of two spherical waves emitted coherently but with opposite phases from the two atoms of the dimer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the upper critical magnetic field Hc of a superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) bilayer of Nb/Cu41 Ni59 and a Nb film (as reference). We obtained the dependence of Hc⊥ and Hc∥ (perpendicular and parallel to the film plane, respectively) on the temperature T by measurements of the resistive transitions and the dependence on the inclination angle θ of the applied field to the film plane, by nonresonant microwave absorption. Over a wide range, Hc⊥ and Hc∥ show the temperature dependence predicted by the Ginzburg-Landau theory. At low temperatures and close to the critical temperature, deviations are observed. While Hc(θ) of the Nb film follows the Tinkham prediction for thin superconducting films, the Nb/Cu41 Ni59-bilayer data exhibit deviations when θ approaches zero. We attribute this finding to the additional anisotropy induced by the quasi-one-dimensional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state and propose a new vortex structure in S/F bilayers, adopting the segmentation approach from high-temperature superconductors. Coherent collective phenomena of hole spins confined in an ensemble of (In,Ga)As quantum dots are studied by monitoring their Larmor precession about a magnetic field. Variation of the field strength drives the hole spins from a regime of resonant spin amplification, in which their precession frequency is a unique multiple of the laser repetition rate, to spin mode locking, in which several precession modes are commensurable with the laser repetition rate. In this regime the spin coherence time of individual holes is determined to be 0.7 µs. In contrast, electron spins in the quantum dots are always trapped in the mode-locking regime due to the strong hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study how the commonly neglected coupling of normal and in-plane elastic response affects tribological properties when Hertzian or randomly rough indenters slide past an elastic body. Compressibility-induced coupling is found to substantially increase maximum tensile stresses, which cause materials to fail, and to decrease friction such that Amontons' law is violated macroscopically even when it holds microscopically. Confinement-induced coupling increases friction and enlarges domains of high tension. Moreover, both types of coupling affect the gap topography and thereby leakage. Thus, coupling can be much more than a minor perturbation of a mechanical contact.

An external load on a particle packing is distributed internally through a heterogeneous network of particle contacts. This contact force distribution determines the stability of the particle packing and the resulting structure. Here, we investigate the homogeneity of the contact force distribution in packings of highly nonconvex particles both in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) packings. A recently developed discrete element method is used to model packings of nonconvex particles of varying sphericity. Our results establish that in 3D packings the distribution of the contact forces in the normal direction becomes increasingly heterogeneous with decreasing particle sphericity. However, in 2D packings the contact force distribution is independent of particle sphericity, indicating that results obtained in 2D packings cannot be extrapolated readily to 3D packings. Radial distribution functions show that the crystallinity in 3D packings decreases with decreasing particle sphericity. We link the decreasing homogeneity of the contact force distributions to the decreasing crystallinity of 3D packings. These findings are complementary to the previously observed link between the heterogeneity of the contact force distribution and a decreasing packing crystallinity due to an increasing polydispersity of spherical particles.

The 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of the central source in M87 have led to the first measurement of the size of a black-hole shadow. This observation offers a new and clean gravitational test of the black-hole metric in the strong-field regime. We show analytically that spacetimes that deviate from the Kerr metric but satisfy weak-field tests can lead to large deviations in the predicted black-hole shadows that are inconsistent with even the current EHT measurements. We use numerical calculations of regular, parametric, non-Kerr metrics to identify the common characteristic among these different parametrizations that control the predicted shadow size. We show that the shadow-size measurements place significant constraints on deviation parameters that control the second post-Newtonian and higher orders of each metric and are, therefore, inaccessible to weak-field tests. The new constraints are complementary to those imposed by observations of gravitational waves from stellar-mass sources.

Quantum mechanics postulates that measuring the qubit's wave function results in its collapse, with the recorded discrete outcome designating the particular eigenstate that the qubit collapsed into. We show that this picture breaks down when the qubit is strongly driven during measurement. More specifically, for a fast evolving qubit the measurement returns the time-averaged expectation value of the measurement operator, erasing information about the initial state of the qubit while completely suppressing the measurement backaction. We call this regime quantum rifling, as the fast spinning of the Bloch vector protects it from deflection into either of its eigenstates. We study this phenomenon with two superconducting qubits coupled to the same probe field and demonstrate that quantum rifling allows us to measure either one of the qubits on demand while protecting the state of the other from measurement backaction. Our results allow for the implementation of selective readout multiplexing of several qubits, contributing to the efficient scaling up of quantum processors for future quantum technologies.

We report on long-term measurements of a highly coherent, nontunable superconducting transmon qubit, revealing low-frequency burst noise in coherence times and qubit transition frequency. We achieve this through a simultaneous measurement of the qubit's relaxation and dephasing rate as well as its resonance frequency. The analysis of correlations between these parameters yields information about the microscopic origin of the intrinsic decoherence mechanisms in Josephson qubits. Our results are consistent with a small number of microscopic two-level systems located at the edges of the superconducting film, which is further confirmed by a spectral noise analysis.

Nonreciprocal devices are a key element for signal routing and noise isolation. Rapid development of quantum technologies has boosted the demand for a new generation of miniaturized and low-loss nonreciprocal components. Here, we use a pair of tunable superconducting artificial atoms in a 1D waveguide to experimentally realize a minimal passive nonreciprocal device. Taking advantage of the quantum nonlinear behavior of artificial atoms, we achieve nonreciprocal transmission through the waveguide in a wide range of powers. Our results are consistent with theoretical modeling showing that nonreciprocity is associated with the population of the two-qubit nonlocal entangled quasidark state, which responds asymmetrically to incident fields from opposing directions. Our experiment highlights the role of quantum correlations in enabling nonreciprocal behavior and opens a path to building passive quantum nonreciprocal devices without magnetic fields.

We present the design of a passive, on-chip microwave circulator based on a ring of superconducting tunnel junctions. We investigate two distinct physical realizations, based on Josephson junctions (JJs) or quantum phase slip elements (QPS), with microwave ports coupled either capacitively (JJ) or inductively (QPS) to the ring structure. A constant bias applied to the center of the ring provides an effective symmetry breaking field, and no microwave or rf bias is required. We show that this design offers high isolation, robustness against fabrication imperfections and bias fluctuations, and a bandwidth in excess of 500 MHz for realistic device parameters.

A spin-polarizing electron beam splitter is described that relies on an arrangement of linearly polarized laser waves of nonrelativistic intensity. An incident electron beam is first coherently scattered off a bichromatic laser field, splitting the beam into two portions, with electron spin and momentum being entangled. Afterwards, the partial beams are coherently superposed in an interferometric setup formed by standing laser waves. As a result, the outgoing electron beam is separated into its spin components along the laser magnetic field, which is shown by both analytical and numerical solutions of Pauli's equation. The proposed laser field configuration thus exerts the same effect on free electrons as an ordinary Stern-Gerlach magnet does on atoms.

We investigate the ionization of HeNe from below the He 1s3p excitation to the He ionization threshold. We observe HeNe+ ions with an enhancement by more than a factor of 60 when the He side couples resonantly to the radiation field. These ions are an experimental proof of a two-center resonant photoionization mechanism predicted by Najjari et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 153002 (2010)]. Furthermore, our data provide electronic and vibrational state resolved decay widths of interatomic Coulombic decay in HeNe dimers. We find that the interatomic Coulombic decay lifetime strongly increases with increasing vibrational state.

Electron spin dynamics in Kapitza-Dirac scattering from a standing laser wave of high frequency and high intensity is studied. We develop a fully relativistic quantum theory of the electron motion based on the time-dependent Dirac equation. Distinct spin dynamics, with Rabi oscillations and complete spin-flip transitions, is demonstrated for Kapitza-Dirac scattering involving three photons in a parameter regime accessible to future high-power x-ray laser sources. The Rabi frequency and, thus, the diffraction pattern is shown to depend crucially on the spin degree of freedom.

Electron-positron pair annihilation into a single photon is studied when a second free electron is present. Focussing on the relativistic regime, we show that the photon emitted in the three-lepton interaction may exhibit distinct angular distributions and polarization properties. Moreover, the process can dominate over two-photon annihilation in relativistic electron-positron plasmas of few-MeV temperature. Resonant two-photon single ionization in a system consisting of two spatially well-separated identical atoms is studied. Because of two-center electron-electron correlations, the ionization may also proceed through photoexcitation of both atoms with subsequent interatomic Coulombic decay. We show that this channel may qualitatively change the dependence of the photoionization on the field intensity as well as the spectra of emitted electrons.

We demonstrate a new method to directly manipulate the state of individual two-level systems (TLSs) in phase qubits. It allows one to characterize the coherence properties of TLSs using standard microwave pulse sequences, while the qubit is used only for state readout. We apply this method to measure the temperature dependence of TLS coherence for the first time. The energy relaxation time T1 is found to decrease quadratically with temperature for the two TLSs studied in this work, while their dephasing time measured in Ramsey and spin-echo experiments is found to be T1 limited at all temperatures.

Magnetic resonance imaging has been used to measure particle velocities, exceeding 1 m s⁻¹ in a two-phase granular system, namely, a spouted bed. The measurements are complicated due to the high voidage, i.e., low particle density, in the region of the highest particle velocity. However, applying gradient shapes which allow fast switching and, thus, short encoding and observation times in combination with a short echo time enable these measurements. It was found that the profile of the particle velocity is nonparabolic. Based on these measurements it was possible to confirm observations made in numerical simulations that there must be a continuous momentum exchange between the annulus region and the spout along the entire length of the spout.

Photoionization of an atom A, in the presence of a neighboring atom B, can proceed both directly and via resonant excitation of B with subsequent energy transfer to A through two-center electron-electron correlation. We show that in such a case the photoionization process can be very strongly enhanced and acquire interesting characteristic features, both in its time development and the electron spectrum.

Electron-positron pair creation by multiphoton absorption in the collision of a relativistic electron with a strong laser beam is calculated within laser-dressed quantum electrodynamics. Total production rates, positron spectra, and relative contributions of different reaction channels are obtained in various interaction regimes. We study the process in a manifestly nonperturbative domain which is shown accessible to future experiments utilizing the electron beam lines at novel x-ray laser facilities or all-optical setups based on laser acceleration. Our theory moreover allows us to add further insights into the experimental data from SLAC [D. Burke, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1626 (1997).].

In the presence of a neighboring atom, electron-ion recombination can proceed resonantly via excitation of an electron in the atom, with subsequent relaxation through radiative decay. It is shown that this two-center dielectronic process can largely dominate over single-center radiative recombination at internuclear distances as large as several nanometers. The relevance of the predicted process is demonstrated by using examples of water-dissolved alkali cations and warm dense matter.

We investigate Bloch oscillations of interacting cold atoms in a mean-field framework. In general, atom-atom interaction causes dephasing and destroys Bloch oscillations. Here we show that Bloch oscillations are persistent if the interaction is modulated harmonically with suitable frequency and phase. For other modulations, Bloch oscillations are rapidly damped. We explain this behavior in terms of collective coordinates whose Hamiltonian dynamics permits one to predict a whole family of stable solutions. In order to describe also the unstable cases, we carry out a stability analysis for Bogoliubov excitations. Using Floquet theory, we are able to predict the unstable modes as well as their growth rate, found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

The production of electron-positron pairs from vacuum by counterpropagating laser beams of linear polarization is calculated. In contrast with the usual approximate approach, the spatial dependence and magnetic component of the laser field are taken into account. We show that the latter strongly affects the creation process at high laser frequency: the production probability is reduced, the kinematics is fundamentally modified, the resonant Rabi-oscillation pattern is distorted, and the resonance positions are shifted, multiplied, and split.

The generation of muon-antimuon pairs is calculated in the collision of an ultrarelativistic bare ion with an intense x-ray laser beam. The reaction proceeds nonlinearly via absorption of two laser photons. By systematic study throughout the nuclear chart, we show that the interplay between the nuclear charge and size, along with the possibility of nuclear excitation leads to saturation of the total production rates for high-Z ions, in contrast to the usual Z2 scaling for pointlike projectiles. The process is experimentally accessible by combining present-day ion accelerators with near-future laser sources and in principle allows for the measurement of nuclear form factors.
