Topological defects are found in particles confined to planar disks interacting via the 1/r Coulomb potential. The total interior topological charge is found to monotonically converge to a negative value as the energy decreases during the relaxation process regardless of initial configurations; it is more negative in a larger cluster. The comparison with a uniform hyperbolic tessellation reveals an underlying hyperbolic structure in a low-energy configuration where the particle density increases from the center of the disk to its boundary. An elliptic structure is identified in an opposite particle distribution where the particle density decreases from the center to the edge of the disk. The novel mechanism of density inhomogeneity driven topological defects as well as the underlying geometric structure may shed light in understanding a wide variety of relevant systems. Elastic crystalline membranes exhibit a buckling transition from sphere to polyhedron. However, their morphologies are restricted to convex polyhedra and are difficult to externally control. Here we study morphological changes of closed crystalline membranes of superparamagnetic particles. The competition of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions with the elasticity of this magnetoelastic membrane leads to concave morphologies. Interestingly, as the magnetic field strength increases, the symmetry of the buckled membrane decreases from 5-fold to 3-fold, to 2-fold and, finally, to 1-fold rotational symmetry. This gives the ability to switch the membrane morphology between convex and concave shapes with specific symmetry and provides promising applications for membrane shape control in the design of actuatable microcontainers for targeted delivery systems. Recent experiments have shown that defect conformations in spherical nematic liquid crystals can be controlled through variations of temperature, shell thickness, and other environmental parameters. These modifications can be understood as a result of the induced changes in the effective elastic constants of the system. To characterize the relation between defect conformations and elastic anisotropy, we carry out Monte Carlo simulations of a nematic on a spherical surface. As the anisotropy is increased, the defects flow from a tetrahedral arrangement to two coalescing pairs and then to a great circle configuration. Dielectric particles in weakly conducting fluids rotate spontaneously when subject to strong electric fields. Such Quincke rotation near a plane electrode leads to particle translation that enables physical models of active matter. In this Letter, we show that Quincke rollers can also exhibit oscillatory dynamics, whereby particles move back and forth about a fixed location. We explain how oscillations arise for micron-scale particles commensurate with the thickness of a field-induced boundary layer in the nonpolar electrolyte. Recent findings suggest that shell protein distribution and the morphology of bacterial microcompartments regulate the chemical fluxes facilitating reactions which dictate their biological function. We explore how the morphology and component patterning are coupled through the competition of mean and gaussian bending energies in multicomponent elastic shells that form three-component irregular polyhedra. We observe two softer components with lower bending rigidities allocated on the edges and vertices while the harder component occupies the faces. When subjected to a nonzero interfacial line tension, the two softer components further separate and pattern into subdomains that are mediated by the gaussian curvature. We find that this degree of fractionation is maximized when there is a weaker line tension and when the ratio of bending rigidities between the two softer domains ≈2. Our results reveal a patterning mechanism in multicomponent shells that can capture the observed morphologies of bacterial microcompartments, and moreover, can be realized in synthetic vesicles.

Charged colloidal particles propel themselves through asymmetric fluxes of chemically generated ions on their surface. We show that asymmetry in the surface charge distribution provides an additional mode of self-propulsion at the nanoscale for chemically active particles that produce ionic species. Particles of sizes smaller than or comparable to the Debye length achieve directed self-propulsion through surface charge asymmetry even when ionic flux is uniform over its surface. Janus nanoparticles endowed with both surface charge and ionic flux asymmetries result in enhanced propulsion speeds of the order of μm/s or higher. Our work suggests an alternative avenue for specifying surface properties that optimize self-propulsion in ionic media.

We study size- and charge-asymmetric oppositely charged colloids driven by an external electric field. The large particles are connected by harmonic springs, forming a hexagonal-lattice network, while the small particles are free of bonds and exhibit fluidlike motion. We show that this model exhibits a cluster formation pattern when the external driving force exceeds a critical value. The clustering is accompanied with stable wave packets in vibrational motions of the large particles.

Janus particles with different patch sizes, confined to two dimensions, generate a series of patterns of interest to the field of nanoscience. Here we observe reverse melting, where for some densities the system melts under cooling. For a broad range of hydrophobic patch sizes (60^{∘}<θ&#95;{0}<90^{∘}), a reentrant transition from solid to liquid and then to an ordered phase emerges as temperature (T) decreases due to the formation of rhombus chains at low T. This reentrant phase has pseudo long-range orientational order but short-range translational order, similar to a hexatic phase. Our work provides guidelines to study the melting and assembly of Janus particles in two dimensions, as well as mechanisms to generate phases with specific symmetry.

In superionic compounds one component premelts, providing high ionic conductivity to solid-state electrolytes. Here we find sublattice melting in colloidal crystals of oppositely charged particles that are highly asymmetric in size and charge in salt solutions. The small particles in ionic compounds melt when the temperature increases, forming a superionic phase. These delocalized small particles in a crystal of large oppositely charged particles, in contrast to superionic phases in atomic systems, form crystals with nonelectroneutral stoichiometric ratios. This generates structures with multiple domains of ionic crystals in percolated superionic phases with adjustable stoichiometries.

We present an ensemble Monte Carlo growth method to sample the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of random chains. The method is based on the multicanonical technique of computing the density of states in the energy space. Such a quantity is temperature independent, and therefore microcanonical and canonical thermodynamic quantities, including the free energy, entropy, and thermal averages, can be obtained by reweighting with a Boltzmann factor. The algorithm we present combines two approaches: The first is the Monte Carlo ensemble growth method, where a "population" of samples in the state space is considered, as opposed to traditional sampling by long random walks, or iterative single-chain growth. The second is the flat-histogram Monte Carlo, similar to the popular Wang-Landau sampling, or to multicanonical chain-growth sampling. We discuss the performance and relative simplicity of the proposed algorithm, and we apply it to known test cases.

Rare earths, which are fundamental components of modern technologies, are often extracted from aqueous solutions using surfactants at oil-water interfaces. Heavier lanthanides are more easily extracted, even though all lanthanides are chemically very similar. Using x-ray fluorescence measurements and theoretical arguments, we show that there is a sharp bulk-concentration-dependent transition in the interfacial adsorption of cations from aqueous solutions containing Er^{3+} or Nd^{3+} in contact with a floating monolayer. The threshold bulk concentration of erbium (Z=68) is an order of magnitude lower than that of neodymium (Z=60), and erbium is preferentially adsorbed when the solution contains both ions. This implies that elemental selectivity during separation originates at the surfactant interface. Electrostatic effects arising from the interface dielectric mismatch, ionic correlations, and sizes of the ions explain the sharp adsorption curve and selectivity.

Surface polarization in ion-containing heterogeneous dielectric media such as cell media and emulsions is determined by and determines the positions of the ions. We compute the surface polarization self-consistently as the ions move and analyze their effects on the interactions between electro-neutral, ion-containing droplets using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations based on the true energy functional. For water droplets immersed in oil, the interdroplet interaction is attractive, and the surface polarization makes the major contribution. By contrast, for oil droplets in water, the ion-surface induced charge interaction is repulsive and counteracts the attraction between the ions, leading to a small attractive interaction between the droplets. This research improves our understanding of self-assembly in mixed phases such as metal extraction for recovering rare earth elements and nuclear waste as well as water purification.

Flexible superparamagnetic filaments are studied under the influence of fast precessing magnetic fields using simulations and a continuum approximation analysis. We find that individual filaments can be made to exert controllable tensile forces along the precession axis. These forces are exploited for microscopic actuation. In bulk, the filaments can be rapidly assembled into different configurations whose material properties depend on the field parameters. The precession frequency affects filament aggregation and conformation by changing the net torques on the filament ends. Using a time-dependent precession angle allows considerable freedom in choosing properties for filament aggregates. As an example, we design a field that twists chains together to dynamically assemble a self-healing gel.

We investigate the rich morphologies of an electrically charged flexible ribbon, which is a prototype for many beltlike structures in biology and nanomaterials. Long-range electrostatic repulsion is found to govern the hierarchical buckling of the ribbon from its initially flat shape to its undulated and out-of-plane twisted conformations. In this process, the screening length is the key controlling parameter, suggesting that a convenient way to manipulate the ribbon morphology is simply to change the salt concentration. We find that these shapes originate from the geometric effect of the electrostatic interaction, which fundamentally changes the metric over the ribbon surface. We also identify the basic modes by which the ribbon reshapes itself in order to lower the energy. The geometric effect of the physical interaction revealed in this Letter has implications for the shape design of extensive ribbonlike materials in nano- and biomaterials.

Colloidal self-replication represents an exciting research frontier in soft matter physics. Currently, all reported self-replication schemes involve coating colloidal particles with stimuli-responsive molecules to allow switchable interactions. In this paper, we introduce a scheme using ferromagnetic dipolar colloids and preprogrammed external magnetic fields to create an autonomous self-replication system. Interparticle dipole-dipole forces and periodically varying weak-strong magnetic fields cooperate to drive colloid monomers from the solute onto templates, bind them into replicas, and dissolve template complexes. We present three general design principles for autonomous linear replicators, derived from a focused study of a minimalist sphere-dimer magnetic system in which single binding sites allow formation of dimeric templates. We show via statistical models and computer simulations that our system exhibits nonlinear growth of templates and produces nearly exponential growth (low error rate) upon adding an optimized competing electrostatic potential. We devise experimental strategies for constructing the required magnetic colloids based on documented laboratory techniques. We also present qualitative ideas about building more complex self-replicating structures utilizing magnetic colloids.

The high rate of ion flux and selectivity of potassium channels has been attributed to the conformation and dynamics of the ions in the filter which connects the channel cavity and the extracellular environment. The cavity serves as the reservoir for potassium ions diffusing from the intracellular medium. The cavity is believed to decrease the dielectric barrier for the ions to enter the filter. We study here the equilibrium and dynamic properties of potassium ions entering the water-filled cavity of a KcsA channel model. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations that are supplemented by electrostatic calculations reveal the important role of water molecules and the partially charged protein helices at the bottom of the cavity in overcoming the energy barrier and stabilizing the potassium ion in the cavity. We further show that the average time for a potassium ion to enter the cavity is much shorter than the conduction rate of a potassium passing through the filter, and this time duration is insensitive over a wide range of the membrane potential. The conclusions drawn from the study of the channel model are applicable in generalized contexts, including the entry of ions in artificial ion channels and other confined geometries.

Variational principles are important in the investigation of large classes of physical systems. They can be used both as analytical methods as well as starting points for the formulation of powerful computational techniques such as dynamical optimization methods. Systems with charged objects in dielectric media and systems with magnetically active particles are important examples. In these examples and other important cases, the variational principles describing the system are required to obey a number of constraints. These constraints are implemented within the variational formulation by means of Lagrange multipliers. Such constrained variational formulations are in general not unique. For the application of efficient simulation methods, one must find specific formulations that satisfy a number of important conditions. An often required condition is that the functional be positive-definite, in other words, its extrema be actual minima. In this article, we present a general approach to attack the problem of finding, among equivalent variational functionals, those that generate true minima. The method is based on the modification of the Lagrange multiplier which allows us to generate large families of effective variational formulations associated with a single original constrained variational principle. We demonstrate its application to different examples and, in particular, to the important cases of Poisson and Poisson-Boltzmann equations. We show how to obtain variational formulations for these systems with extrema that are always minima.

Polyelectrolytes and electrolyte solutions are known to demonstrate a rich array of phase behaviors due to the effects of long-ranged interactions inherent in Coulombic attractions and repulsions. While there is a wealth of literature examining these materials to provide some physical insight into their thermodynamics, all of these methods make strong approximations with regards to the nature of the ionic component. In this investigation we develop a hybrid liquid-state integral equation and self-consistent field theory numerical theory, and systematically demonstrate the ramifications on local ion structure on the overall thermodynamics of segregated polymer blends. We show effects on phase separation such as suppression due to hard sphere interactions and enhancement due to ion cohesion that are not described using traditional Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field theory.

The crystallization of bundles in filament networks interacting via long-range repulsions in confinement is described by a phenomenological model. The model demonstrates the formation of the hexagonal crystalline order via the interplay of the confinement potential and the filament-filament repulsion. Two distinct crystallization mechanisms in the short- and large- screening length regimes are discussed, and the phase diagram is obtained. Simulation of large bundles predicts the existence of topological defects within the bundled filaments. This electrostatic repulsion-driven crystallization model arising from studying filament networks can even find a more general context extending to charged colloidal systems.

We study a strongly adsorbed flexible polyelectrolyte chain on tori. In this generalized Thomson problem, the patterns of the adsorbed chain are analyzed in the space of the toroidal coordinates and in terms of the orientation of each chain segment. Various patterns are found, including double spirals, disclination-like structures, Janus tori, and uniform wrappings, arising from the long-range electrostatic interaction and the toroidal geometry. Their broken mirror symmetry is quantitatively characterized by introducing an order parameter, an integral of the torsion. The uniform packing, which breaks the mirror symmetry the least, has the lowest value of the order parameter. In addition, it is found that the electrostatic energy of confined chains on tori conforms to a power law regardless of the screening effect in some typical cases studied. Furthermore, we study random walks on tori that generate chain configurations in the large screening limit or at large thermal fluctuation; some features associated with the toroidal geometry are discussed.

For charged systems in heterogeneous dielectric media, a key obstacle for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is the need to solve the Poisson equation in the media. This obstacle can be bypassed using MD methods that treat the local polarization charge density as a dynamic variable, but such approaches require access to a true free energy functional, one that evaluates to the equilibrium electrostatic energy at its minimum. In this Letter, we derive the needed functional. As an application, we develop a Car-Parrinello MD method for the simulation of free charges present near a spherical emulsion droplet separating two immiscible liquids with different dielectric constants. Our results show the presence of nonmonotonic ionic profiles in the dielectric with a lower dielectric constant.

We study closed liquid membranes that segregate into three phases due to differences in the chemical and physical properties of its components. The shape and in-plane membrane arrangement of the phases are coupled through phase-specific bending energies and line tensions. We use simulated annealing Monte Carlo simulations to find low-energy structures, allowing both phase arrangement and membrane shape to relax. The three-phase system is the simplest one in which there are multiple interface pairs, allowing us to analyze interfacial preferences and pairwise distinct line tensions. We observe the system's preference for interface pairs that maximize differences in spontaneous curvature. From a pattern selection perspective, this acts as an effective attraction between phases of most disparate spontaneous curvature. We show that this effective attraction is robust enough to persist even when the interface between these phases is the most penalized by line tension. This effect is driven by geometry and not by any explicit component-component interaction.

We use an elastic model to explore faceting of solid-wall vesicles with elastic heterogeneities. We show that faceting occurs in regions where the vesicle wall is softer, such as areas of reduced wall thicknesses or concentrated in crystalline defects. The elastic heterogeneities are modeled as a second component with reduced elastic parameters. Using simulated annealing Monte Carlo simulations we obtain the vesicle shape by optimizing the distributions of facets and boundaries. Our model allows us to reduce the effects of the residual stress generated by crystalline defects, and reveals a robust faceting mechanism into polyhedra other than the icosahedron.

We study the optimal packing of triangular ionic lattices on the surface of nanofibers. We compute the favored orientation of the lattice with respect to the axis of the cylindrical fiber, and we determine the effects of the surface curvature. Electrostatic interactions prefer chiral arrangements only for special families of lattices that depend on the fiber diameter. However, there are families of lattices that energetically promote achiral configurations. Besides the long-range Coulomb interactions we consider the behavior of short-range elastic forces, represented by interconnected springs between neighboring ions. In this case a different family of achiral lattices is always preferred. We also show that varying the stoichiometric composition of charges, as well as including higher-order curvature effects, does not significantly modify such a scenario.

We consider a mixture of two immiscible oppositely charged molecules strongly adsorbed to an interface, with a neutral nonselective molecular background. We determine the coexistence between a high density ionic periodic phase and a dilute isotropic ionic phase. We use a strong segregation approach for the periodic phase and determine the one-loop free energy for the dilute phase. Lamellar and hexagonal patterns are calculated for different charge stoichiometries of the mixture. Molecular dynamics simulations exhibit the predicted phase behavior. The periodic length scale of the solid phase is found to scale as epsilon/(lB psi3/2), where psi is the effective charge density, lB is the Bjerrum length, and epsilon is the cohesive energy.
