We present a first-principles method for the calculation of the temperature-dependent relaxation of symmetry-breaking atomic driving forces in photoexcited systems. We calculate the phonon-assisted decay of the photoexcited force on the low-symmetry E_{g} mode following absorption of an ultrafast pulse in Bi, Sb, and As. The force decay lifetimes for Bi and Sb are of the order of 10 fs and in agreement with recent experiments, demonstrating that electron-phonon scattering is the primary mechanism relaxing the symmetry-breaking forces. Calculations for a range of absorbed photon energies suggest that larger amplitude, symmetry-breaking atomic motion may be induced by choosing a pump photon energy which maximizes the product of the initial E_{g} force and its lifetime. The high-symmetry A_{1g} force undergoes a partial decay to a nonzero constant on similar timescales, which has not yet been measured in experiments. The average imaginary part of the electron self-energy over the photoexcited carrier distribution provides a crude indication of the decay rate of symmetry-breaking forces.

We present an ab initio study which identifies dominant effects leading to thermal conductivity reductions in carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes with isotope disorder. Our analysis reveals that, contrary to previous speculations, localization effects cannot be observed in the thermal conductivity measurements. Observable reduction of the thermal conductivity is mostly due to diffusive scattering. Multiple scattering induced interference effects were found to be prominent for isotope concentrations > or approximately 10%; otherwise, the thermal conduction is mainly determined by independent scattering contributions of single isotopes. We give explicit predictions of the effect of isotope disorder on nanotube thermal conductivity that can be directly compared with experiments.

The various phases observed in all cuprate superconductors [superconducting (SC), spin-glass (SG), and antiferromagnetic (AFM)] were investigated with respect to oxygen-isotope (16O/18O) effects, using here as a prototype system of cuprates Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta. All phases exhibit an isotope effect which is strongest where the respective phase terminates. In addition, the isotope effects on the magnetic phases (SG and AFM) are sign reversed as compared to the one on the superconducting phase. In the coexistence regime of the SG and SC phase a two-component behavior is observed where the isotope induced decrease of the superfluid density leads to a corresponding enhancement in the SG related density.

Muon-spin-rotation (muSR) measurements of the in-plane penetration depth lambda(ab) have been performed in the infinite-layer electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 high-T(c) superconductor (HTS). Absence of the magnetic rare-earth ions in this compound allowed us to measure for the first time the absolute value of lambda(ab)(0) in electron-doped HTSs using muSR. We found lambda(ab)(0)=116(2) nm. The zero-temperature depolarization rate sigma(0) proportional, variant 1/lambda(2)(ab)(0)=4.6(1) micros(-1) is more than 4 times higher than expected from the Uemura line. Therefore, this electron-doped HTS does not follow the Uemura relation found for hole-doped HTSs.

The whole Balmer H(beta) line profiles are studied in detail experimentally in the T-tube discharge for the wide range of plasma parameters. Besides the common one, two additional parameters are introduced to characterize the asymmetry behavior of the experimental Stark profiles with the reference point chosen in the center of the line. The experimental data are analyzed and benchmarked versus the simple theoretical model based on the effects of microfield nonuniformity and electron impact shifts.
