Improving the efficiency of charge separation (CS) and charge transport (CT) is essential for almost all optoelectronic applications, yet its maximization remains a big challenge. Here we propose a conceptual strategy to achieve CS efficiency close to unity and simultaneously avoid charge recombination (CR) during CT in a ferroelectric polar-discontinuity (PD) superlattice structure, as demonstrated in (BaTiO_{3})_{m}/(BiFeO_{3})_{n}, which is fundamentally different from the existing mechanisms. The competition of interfacial dipole and ferroelectric PD induces opposite band bending in BiFeO_{3} and BaTiO_{3} sublattices. Consequently, the photoexcited electrons (e) and holes (h) in individual sublattices move forward to the opposite interfaces forming electrically isolated e and h channels, leading to a CS efficiency close to unity. Importantly, the spatial isolation of conduction channels in (BaTiO_{3})_{m}/(BiFeO_{3})_{n} enable suppression of CR during CT, thus realizing a unique band diagram for spatially orthogonal CS and CT. Remarkably, (BaTiO_{3})_{m}/(BiFeO_{3})_{n} can maintain a high photocurrent and large band gap simultaneously. Our results provide a fascinating illumination for designing artificial heterostructures toward ideal CS and CT in optoelectronic applications.

To explore whether the density-functional theory non-equilibrium Green's function formalism (DFT-NEGF) provides a rigorous framework for quantum transport, we carried out time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of the transient current through two realistic molecular devices, a carbon chain and a benzenediol molecule inbetween two aluminum electrodes. The TDDFT simulations for the steady state current exactly reproduce the results of fully self-consistent DFT-NEGF calculations even beyond linear response. In contrast, sizable differences are found with respect to an equilibrium, non-self-consistent treatment which are related here to differences in the Kohn-Sham and fully interacting susceptibility of the device region. Moreover, earlier analytical conjectures on the equivalence of static and time-dependent approaches in the low bias regime are confirmed with high numerical precision., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A time-dependent density-functional tight-binding method in real time domain is developed to calculate the absorption spectra of very large systems. The time-dependent first-order response of the density matrix due to an external perturbation is solved using Chebyshev method with high efficiency and accuracy. Linear scaling of CPU time and memory usage with the system size is achieved by exploring the sparsity of the involving matrices as well as by introduction of a cutoff for the first-order density matrix. The compressed sparse row scheme is used to store the matrices, and SPARSEKIT is employed for sparse matrix multiplication. The absorption spectra of three-dimensional water clusters ${({\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O})}_{216}$, ${({\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O})}_{432}$, ${({\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O})}_{648}$, and ${({\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O})}_{864}$ are calculated using the present approach. The error due to the cutoff of density matrix is negligible. It is shown from these calculations that the presented method is very efficient and capable of calculating the absorption spectra for very large three-dimensional systems.

A simulation has been performed to reveal the detailed dynamics and statistical behavior of a Maxwell demon of the simplest kind, a trap door held over by a spring inside a box filled with gas molecules. The role of such a demon can be controlled by tuning Smoluchowski’s fluctuations. When the demon is in thermal equilibrium with the rest of the system, it fails to function as designed, and when it is separately subjected to a thermal bath with a different temperature, it creates a temperature or density gradient between the two chambers of the box it divides. As a Maxwell demon, the trap-door device creates more readily a density gradient than that of temperature. Accepted version

A linear-scaling time-dependent density-functional theory is developed to evaluate the optical response of large molecular systems. The two-electron Coulomb integrals are evaluated with the fast multipole method, and the calculation of exchange-correlation quadratures utilizes the locality of exchange-correlation functional within the adiabatic local density approximation and the integral prescreening technique. Instead of many-body wave function, the equation of motion is solved for the reduced single-electron density matrix in the time domain. Based on its ``nearsightedness'', the reduced density matrix cutoffs are employed to ensure that the computational time scales linearly with the system size. As an illustration, the resulting time-dependent density-functional theory is used to calculate the absorption spectra of linear alkanes, and the linear scaling of computational time versus the system size is clearly demonstrated.
