We investigate the existence of quantum disentangled liquid (QDL) states in the half-filled Hubbard model on bipartite lattices. In the one dimensional case we employ a combination of integrability and strong coupling expansion methods to argue that there are indeed finite energy-density eigenstates that exhibit QDL behaviour in the sense of J. Stat. Mech. P10010 (2014). The states exhibiting the QDL property are atypical in the sense that while their entropy density is non-zero, it is smaller than that of thermal states at the same energy density. We argue that for U >> t these latter thermal states exhibit a weaker form of the QDL property, which carries over to the higher dimensional case., 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted version

We employ equation of motion techniques to study the non-equilibrium dynamics in a lattice model of weakly interacting spinless fermions. Our model provides a simple setting for analyzing the effects of weak integrability breaking perturbations on the time evolution after a quantum quench. We establish the accuracy of the method by comparing results at short and intermediate times to time-dependent density matrix renormalization group computations. For sufficiently weak integrability-breaking interactions we always observe prethermalization plateaux, where local observables relax to non-thermal values at intermediate time scales. At later times a crossover towards thermal behaviour sets in. We determine the associated time scale, which depends on the initial state, the band structure of the non-interacting theory, and the strength of the integrability breaking perturbation. Our method allows us to analyze in some detail the spreading of correlations and in particular the structure of the associated light cones in our model. We find that the interior and exterior of the light cone are separated by an intermediate region, the temporal width of which appears to scale with a universal power-law $t^{1/3}$., 33 pages, 35 figures

We consider the optical conductivity $\sigma_1(\omega)$ in the metallic phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. Our results focus on the vicinity of half filling and the frequency regime around the optical gap in the Mott insulating phase. By means of a density-matrix renormalization group implementation of the correction-vector approach, $\sigma_1(\omega)$ is computed for a range of interaction strengths and dopings. We identify an energy scale $E_{\rm opt}$ above which the optical conductivity shows a rapid increase. We then use a mobile impurity model in combination with exact results to determine the behavior of $\sigma_1(\omega)$ for frequencies just above $E_{\rm opt}$ which is in agreement with our numerical data. We present experimental and theoretical evidence that an interesting quantum many-body effect---quasiparticle breakdown---occurs in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising-like ferromagnet ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ in its paramagnetic phase at high transverse field as a result of explicit breaking of spin inversion symmetry. We propose a quantum spin Hamiltonian capturing the essential one-dimensional physics of ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ and determine the exchange parameters of this model by fitting the calculated single-particle dispersion to the one observed experimentally in applied transverse magnetic fields [1]. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the single-particle dispersion which observe ``anomalous broadening'' effects over a narrow energy range at intermediate energies. We propose that this effect originates from the decay of the one particle mode into two-particle states. This decay arises from (i) a finite overlap between the one-particle dispersion and the two-particle continuum in a narrow energy-momentum range and (ii) a small misalignment of the applied field away from the direction perpendicular to the Ising axis in the experiments, which allows for nonzero matrix elements for decay by breaking the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian.

We consider the time evolution after quantum quenches in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin chain with Ising-like anisotropy. The time evolution of short-distance spin-spin correlation functions is studied by numerical tensor network techniques for a variety of initial states, including N\'eel and Majumdar-Ghosh states and the ground state of the XXZ chain at large values of the anisotropy. The various correlators appear to approach stationary values, which are found to be in good agreement with the results of exact calculations of stationary expectation values in appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. In particular, our analysis shows how symmetries of the post-quench Hamiltonian that are broken by particular initial states are restored at late times., Comment: 31 pages, 23 figures

Specific heat data for the quasi one dimensional quantum magnet Copper Benzoate (Cu(C_6D_5COO)_2 \cdot 3D_2O) is analyzed in the framework of an effective low-energy description in terms of a Sine-Gordon theory., revised version, to appear in PRB

We study weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains in their ordered phase by combining an exact solution of the single-chain problem with a random-phase-approximation analysis of the interchain interaction. A single chain is described by a quantum Sine-Gordon model and dynamical staggered susceptibilities are determined by employing the form-factor approach to quantum correlation functions. We consider both antiferromagnetic order encountered in quasi-one-dimensional materials such as ${\mathrm{KCuF}}_{3}$ and spin-Peierls order as found in ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}.$

An impurity coupling to both spin and charge degrees of freedom is added to a periodic $t$- $J$ chain such that its interaction with the bulk can be varied continuously without losing integrability. Ground state properties, impurity contributions to the susceptibilities and low temperature specific heat are studied as well as transport properties. The impurity phase shifts are calculated to establish the existence of an impurity bound state in the holon sector.

We explore the zero-temperature phase diagram of bosons interacting via Feshbach resonant pairing interactions in one dimension. Using DMRG (Density Matrix Renormalization Group) and field theory techniques we characterize the phases and quantum phase transitions in this low-dimensional setting. We provide a broad range of evidence in support of an Ising quantum phase transition separating distinct paired superfluids, including results for the energy gaps, correlation functions and entanglement entropy. In particular, we show that the Ising correlation length, order parameter and critical properties are directly accessible from a ratio of the atomic and molecular two-point functions. We further demonstrate that both the zero-momentum occupation numbers and the visibility are in accordance with the absence of a purely atomic superfluid phase. We comment on the connection to recent studies of boson pairing in a generalized classical XY model., 18 pages, 22 figures

We consider the nonequilibrium evolution in the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain for fixed magnetization after a local quantum quench. This model is equivalent to interacting spinless fermions. Initially an infinite magnetic field is applied to n consecutive sites and the ground state is calculated. At time t=0 the field is switched off and the time evolution of observables such as the z component of spin is computed using the time evolving block decimation algorithm. We find that the observables exhibit strong signatures of linearly propagating spinon and bound state excitations. These persist even when integrability-breaking perturbations are included. Since bound states ("strings") are notoriously difficult to observe using conventional probes such as inelastic neutron scattering, we conclude that local quantum quenches are an ideal setting for studying their properties. We comment on implications of our results for cold atom experiments.

The effect of thermal fluctuations on the dynamics of a gapped quantum magnet is studied using inelastic neutron scattering on copper nitrate, a model material for the spin-1/2, one-dimensional (1D) bond alternating Heisenberg chain. A large, highly deuterated, single-crystal sample of copper nitrate is produced using a solution growth method and measurements are made using the high-resolution backscattering spectrometer OSIRIS at the ISIS Facility. Theoretical calculations and numerical analysis are combined to interpret the physical origin of the thermal effects observed in the magnetic spectra. The primary observations are (1) a thermally induced central peak due to intraband scattering, which is similar to Villain scattering familiar from soliton systems in 1D, and (2) the one-magnon quasiparticle pole is seen to develop with temperature into an asymmetric continuum of scattering. We relate this asymmetric line broadening to a thermal strongly correlated state caused by hard-core constraints and quasiparticle interactions. These findings are a counter example to recent assertions of the universality of line broadening in 1D systems and are applicable to a broad range of quantum systems. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S = 1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the density-matrix renormalization-group, Bethe ansatz, and field-theoretical considerations. In a large region of the parameter space, we identify a magnetized ferroquadrupolar Luttinger liquid consisting of a quasicondensate of bound magnon pairs. This liquid undergoes a continuous pair-unbinding transition to a more conventional Luttinger liquid region obtained by polarizing the system above the Haldane gap region. This pair-unbinding transition is shown to be in the Ising universality class on top of a Luttinger liquid, leading to an effective central charge 3/2. We also revisit the nature of the partially polarized Luttinger liquid around and above the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland point. Our results confirm that this is a two-component liquid and rule out the formation of a single-component vector-chiral phase.

We determine the dynamical structure factor of the two-leg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg ladder at low temperatures in the regime of strong rung coupling. The dominant feature at zero temperature is the coherent triplon mode. We show that the line shape of this mode broadens in a nonsymmetric way at finite temperatures and that the degree of asymmetry increases with temperature. We also show that at low frequencies, a temperature-induced resonance akin to the Villain mode in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg Ising chain emerges.

We present a new model describing strongly correlated electrons on a general {ital d}-dimensional lattice. It is an extended Hubbard model and it contains the {ital t}-{ital J} model as a special case. The model naturally describes local electron pairs, which can move coherently at arbitrary momentum. By using an {eta}-pairing mechanism we can construct eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with off-diagonal long-range order. In the attractive case the exact ground state is superconducting in any number of dimensions. On a one-dimensional lattice, the model is exactly solvable by Bethe ansatz.

We consider the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain in the regime of large Ising-like anisotropy $\Delta$. By a combination of duality and Jordan-Wigner transformations we derive a mapping to weakly interacting spinless fermions, which represent domain walls between the two degenerate ground states. We develop a perturbative expansion in $1\Delta$ for the transverse dynamical spin structure factor at finite temperatures and in an applied transverse magnetic field. We present a unified description for both the low-energy temperature-activated response and the temperature evolution of the T=0 two-spinon continuum. We find that the two-spinon continuum narrows in energy with increasing temperature. At the same time spectral weight is transferred from the two-spinon continuum to the low energy intraband scattering continuum, which is strongly peaked around the position of the (single) spinon dispersion (`Villain mode')., Comment: 23 pages, 19 eps figures (now improved), uses feynmf

We consider the easy-plane anisotropic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain in combined uniform longitudinal and transverse staggered magnetic fields. The low-energy limit of his model is described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory. Using methods of integrable quantum field theory we determine the various components of the dynamical structure factor. To do so, we derive explicit expressions for all matrix elements of the low-energy projections of the spin operators involving at most two particles. We discuss applications of our results to experiments on one-dimensional quantum magnets.

We consider density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. On intuitive grounds one might expect them to exhibit an exponential decay. However, as has been noted recently, this is not obvious from the Bethe Ansatz/conformal field theory (BA/CFT) approach. We show that by supplementing the BA/CFT analysis with simple symmetry arguments one can easily prove that correlations of the lattice density operators decay exponentially.

The nature of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the cuprates remains one of the fundamental unsolved problems in high temperature superconductivity. Whether and how these two phenomena are interdependent is perhaps most sharply seen in the stripe phases of various copper-oxide materials. These phases, involving a mixture of spin and charge density waves, do not yet admit a complete, overarching theoretical treatment. However aspects of this problem can be analyzed. In this work, we focus on the magnetic side of stripe physics. To this end, we study a simple model of a stripe-ordered phase consisting of an array of alternating coupled doped and undoped two-leg Hubbard-like ladders. To obtain the magnetic response, we employ already available dynamical susceptibilities of the individual two-leg ladders and treat the interladder coupling in a random phase approximation. Strikingly, we find two possible scenarios for the ordered state induced by the coupling between ladders: the spin modulation can occur either along or perpendicular to the direction of the stripes. These two scenarios are differentiated according to different microscopic realizations of the component doped ladders. However inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the two stripe ordered cuprates, La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4 and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, do not readily distinguish between these two scenarios due to manner in which stripes form in these materials., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

We study dynamical properties of the anisotropic triangular quantum antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{Cs}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuCl}}_{4}$. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have established that the dynamical spin correlations cannot be understood within a linear spin wave analysis. We go beyond linear spin wave theory by taking interactions between magnons into account in a $1∕S$ expansion. We determine the dynamical structure factor and carry out extensive comparisons with experimental data. We find that compared to linear spin wave theory, a significant fraction of the scattering intensity is shifted to higher energies and strong scattering continua are present. However, the $1∕S$ expansion fails to account for the experimentally observed large quantum renormalization of the exchange energies.

The polarization dependence of magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{BaCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ is studied as a function of momentum and energy transfer. The results of inelastic neutron-scattering measurements are directly compared to semianalytical calculations based on the chain-mean-field approximation and random-phase approximation (RPA). A quantitative agreement between theoretically calculated and experimentally measured dynamic structure factors of transverse spin fluctuations is obtained. In contrast, substantial discrepancies are found for longitudinal polarization. This behavior is attributed to intrinsic limitations of the RPA that ignores correlation effects.

We consider the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling in the presence of a magnetic field. Using field theory techniques we calculate the dynamical density-density correlation function ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{nn}}(\ensuremath{\omega},q)$ in the low-energy limit. When excitons are formed, a singularity appears in ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{nn}}(\ensuremath{\omega},q)$ at a particular energy and momentum transfer.

We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-½ ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descriptions to determine the dynamical response functions, the staggered spin susceptibility, and the string order parameter.

We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one-dimensional Heisenberg chains with a random-phase approximation in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collective modes. We find a very weak instability to the formation of incommensurate magnetic order and determine the ordering temperature and wave vector. We also determine the effects of uniform magnetic fields on the ordering transition.
