Abstract: International audience; Mean values of the number of protons and neutrons of the primary fission fragments at scission are determined for the asymmetric fission of 16 fissioning isotopes, from Ac219 up to Np238. Our results confirm that the main asymmetric fission mode around the heavier uranium isotopes is indeed characterized by an average atomic number around 〈ZH〉=54 in the heavy fission fragments. However, they also unambiguously show a stabilization effect in the light fission fragments around 〈NL〉=52–54 in the neutron-deficient thorium and actinium isotopes. This is a clear signature that these deformed proton and neutron shell closures around 54 play a major role in the nuclear fission process. The evolution along the thorium chain shows that the neutron shell appears to be dominant in the asymmetric fission of the lighter thorium isotopes, in contrast to the heavier thorium isotopes for which the stabilization originates from the proton shell.

Abstract: Low-energy fission of and radioactive beams, provided by the Fragment Separator (FRS) of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung facility (GSI), has been studied using the Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams / Studies on Fission with Aladin (R3B/SOFIA) setup. The latter allows us, on an event-by-event basis, to simultaneously identify, in terms of their mass and atomic numbers, the fissioning nucleus in coincidence with both fission fragments after prompt-neutron emission. This article reports new results on elemental, isotonic, isobaric, and isotopic yields. Moreover, the high accuracy of our data allowed us to study in detail proton even-odd staggering, from elemental yields; neutron excess, from isotopic yields; and total prompt-neutron multiplicity, from the difference of masses of the fissioning nucleus and fission fragments. These results are then compared to previous experimental data in order to probe how these fission observables change as function of the excitation energy and atomic and neutron numbers of the compound nucleus.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton·years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton·years of data, including 78 kton·years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for p→e+π0 and one candidate remains for p→μ+π0 in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ/B(p→e+π0)>2.4×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>1.6×1034 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $\sigma = (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Abstract: International audience; The inverse kinematics technique, applied to radioactive beams and combined to the Coulomb excitation method, is a powerful tool to study low-energy fission. A novel experimental setup was developed within the R3B/SOFIA (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams/Studies On FIssion with Aladin) collaboration to identify in mass and atomic numbers both fission fragments in coincidence. These new data provide elemental, isobaric, and isotonic yields for the fission along the thorium isotopic chain. Results are also compared to previous measurements using either the same reaction mechanism or thermal-neutron induced fission. This latter comparison permits to probe the influence of the excitation energy in the fission process.

Abstract: Neutral current (NC) interactions of atmospheric neutrinos on oxygen form one of the major backgrounds in the search for supernova relic neutrinos with water-based Cherenkov detectors. The NC channel is dominated by neutrino quasi-elastic (NCQE) scattering off nucleons inside $^{16}$O nuclei. In this paper we report the first measurement of NCQE cross section using atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande (SK). The measurement used 2,778 live days of SK-IV data with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water. Within the visible energy window of 7.5-29.5 MeV, we observed $117$ events compared to the expected $71.9$ NCQE signal and $53.1$ background events. Weighted by the atmospheric neutrino spectrum from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, the flux averaged NCQE cross section is measured to be $(1.01\pm0.17(\text{stat.})^{+0.78}_{-0.30}(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract: The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of $14.7(7.6)\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 $\nu_e$ candidates and 7 anti-$\nu_e$ candidates were observed while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for $\delta_{CP}=0$ and normal mass ordering. The obtained $2\sigma$ confidence interval for the $CP$ violating phase, $\delta_{CP}$, does not include the $CP$-conserving cases ($\delta_{CP}=0,\pi$). The best-fit values of other parameters are $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.526^{+0.032}_{-0.036}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}=2.463\pm0.065\times10^{-3} \mathrm{eV}^2/c^4$.

Abstract: The single π0 production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water in a neutrino beam with a peak neutrino energy of 0.6 GeV has been measured using the POD, one of the subdetectors of the T2K near detector. The production rate was measured for data taking periods when the POD contained water (2.64×1020 protons-on-target) and also periods without water (3.49×1020 protons-on-target). A measurement of the neutral current single π0 production rate on water is made using appropriate subtraction of the production rate with water in from the rate with water out of the target region. The subtraction analysis yields 106±41±69 signal events where the uncertainties are statistical (stat.) and systematic (sys.) respectively. This is consistent with the prediction of 157 events from the nominal simulation. The measured to expected ratio is 0.68±0.26(stat)±0.44(sys)±0.12(flux). The nominal simulation uses a flux integrated cross section of 7.63×10−39 cm2 per nucleon with an average neutrino interaction energy of 1.3 GeV.

Abstract: We report a measurement of cross section $\sigma(\nu_{\mu}+{\rm nucleus}\rightarrow\mu^{-}+X)$ and the first measurements of the cross section $\sigma(\bar{\nu}_{\mu}+{\rm nucleus}\rightarrow\mu^{+}+X)$ and their ratio $R(\frac{\sigma(\bar \nu)}{\sigma(\nu)})$ at (anti-)neutrino energies below 1.5 GeV. We determine the single momentum bin cross section measurements, averaged over the T2K $\bar{\nu}/\nu$-flux, for the detector target material (mainly Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Copper) with phase space restricted laboratory frame kinematics of $\theta_{\mu} $500 MeV/c. The results are $\sigma(\bar{\nu})=\left( 0.900\pm0.029{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.088{\rm (syst.)}\right)\times10^{-39}$ and $\sigma(\nu)=\left( 2.41\ \pm0.022{\rm{(stat.)}}\pm0.231{\rm (syst.)}\ \right)\times10^{-39}$ in units of cm$^{2}$/nucleon and $R\left(\frac{\sigma(\bar{\nu})}{\sigma(\nu)}\right)= 0.373\pm0.012{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.015{\rm (syst.)}$.

Abstract: We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $\theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{32}$ governing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three flavor neutrino oscillation model. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, the parameters are measured separately for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Using $7.482 \times 10^{20}$ POT in neutrino running mode and $7.471 \times 10^{20}$ POT in antineutrino mode, T2K obtained, $\sin^{2}(\theta_{23})=0.51^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{32} = 2.53^{+0.15}_{-0.13} \times 10^{-3}$eV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$ for neutrinos, and $\sin^{2}({\overline{\theta}}_{23})=0.42^{+0.25}_{-0.07}$ and ${\Delta\overline{m}^2}_{32} = 2.55^{+0.33}_{-0.27} \times 10^{-3}$eV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$ for antineutrinos (assuming normal mass ordering). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (η, ρ0, ω) and for neutron decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (π−, ρ−) using Super-Kamiokande I-IV data, corresponding to 0.316 megaton⋅years of exposure. This measurement updates the previous published result by using 2.26 times more data and improved analysis methods. No significant evidence for nucleon decay is observed and lower limits on the partial lifetime of the nucleon are obtained. The limits range from 3×1031 to 1×1034 years at 90% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract: SOFIA (Studies On Fission with Aladin) is a novel experimental program, dedicated to accurate measurements of fission-fragment isotopic yields. The setup allows us to fully identify, in nuclear charge and mass, both fission fragments in coincidence for the whole fission-fragment range. It was installed at the GSI facility (Darmstadt), to benefit from the relativistic heavy-ion beams available there, and thus to use inverse kinematics. This paper reports on fission yields obtained in electromagnetically induced fission of U238.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 using Super-Kamiokande data from April 1996 to March 2015, 0.306 megaton·years exposure in total. The atmospheric neutrino background rate in Super-Kamiokande IV is reduced to almost half that of phase I-III by tagging neutrons associated with neutrino interactions. The reach of the proton lifetime is further enhanced by introducing new signal criteria that select the decay of a proton in a hydrogen atom. No candidates were seen in the p→e+π0 search. Two candidates that passed all of the selection criteria for p→μ+π0 have been observed, but these are consistent with the expected number of background events of 0.87. Lower limits on the proton lifetime are set at τ/B(p→e+π0)>1.6×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>7.7×1033 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: International audience; A complete kinematics measurement of the two fission fragments was used for the first time to investigatefission dynamics at small and large deformations. Fissioning systems with high excitation energies, compactshapes, and low angular momenta were produced in inverse kinematics by using spallation reactions of leadprojectiles. A new generation experimental setup allowed for the first full and unambiguous identification inmass and atomic number of both fission fragments. This measurement permitted us to accurately determinefission cross sections, the charge distribution, and the neutron excess of the fission fragments as a function of theatomic number of the fissioning system. These data are compared with different model calculations to extractinformation on the value of the dissipation parameter at small and large deformations. The present results do notshow any sizable dependence of the nuclear dissipation parameter on temperature or deformation.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent π+ production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV, and with a restriction on the final state phase space volume in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso et al., the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. We observe a clear event excess above background, disagreeing with the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. The measured flux-averaged cross sections are below those predicted by both the Rein-Sehgal and Alvarez-Ruso et al. models.

Abstract: Light charged particles emitted in proton-induced fission reactions on Pb-208 have been measured at different kinetic energies: 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV. The experiment was performed by the SOFIA Collaboration at the GSI facilities in Darmstadt (Germany). The inverse kinematics technique was combined with a setup especially designed to measure light charged particles in coincidence with fission fragments. This measurement allowed us, for the first time, to obtain correlations between the light charged particles emitted during the fission process and the charge distributions of the fission fragments. These correlations were compared with different model calculations to assess the ground-to-saddle dynamics. The results confirm that transient and dissipative effects are required for an accurate description of the fission observables.

Abstract: We report the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon without pions in the final state at the T2K beam energy using 5.734×1020 protons on target. For the first time the measurement is reported as a flux-integrated, double-differential cross section in muon kinematic variables (cosθμ, pμ), without correcting for events where a pion is produced and then absorbed by final state interactions. Two analyses are performed with different selections, background evaluations and cross-section extraction methods to demonstrate the robustness of the results against biases due to model-dependent assumptions. The measurements compare favorably with recent models which include nucleon-nucleon correlations but, given the present precision, the measurement does not distinguish among the available models. The data also agree with Monte Carlo simulations which use effective parameters that are tuned to external data to describe the nuclear effects. The total cross section in the full phase space is σ=(0.417±0.047(syst)±0.005(stat))×10-38 cm2 nucleon-1 and the cross section integrated in the region of phase space with largest efficiency and best signal-over-background ratio (cosθμ>0.6 and pμ>200 MeV) is σ=(0.202±0.036(syst)±0.003(stat))×10-38 cm2 nucleon-1.

Abstract: Cosmic-ray-muon spallation-induced radioactive isotopes with $\beta$ decays are one of the major backgrounds for solar, reactor, and supernova relic neutrino experiments. Unlike in scintillator, production yields for cosmogenic backgrounds in water have not been exclusively measured before, yet they are becoming more and more important in next generation neutrino experiments designed to search for rare signals. We have analyzed the low-energy trigger data collected at Super-Kamiokande-IV in order to determine the production rates of $^{12}$B, $^{12}$N, $^{16}$N, $^{11}$Be, $^9$Li, $^8$He, $^9$C, $^8$Li, $^8$B and $^{15}$C. These rates were extracted from fits to time differences between parent muons and subsequent daughter $\beta$'s by fixing the known isotope lifetimes. Since $^9$Li can fake an inverse-beta-decay reaction chain via a $\beta + n$ cascade decay, producing an irreducible background with detected energy up to a dozen MeV, a dedicated study is needed for evaluating its impact on future measurements; the application of a neutron tagging technique using correlated triggers was found to improve this $^9$Li measurement. The measured yields were generally found to be comparable with theoretical calculations, except the cases of the isotopes $^8$Li/$^8$B and $^9$Li., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PRD for publication

Abstract: International audience; The nuclear level density is one of the main ingredients for the statistical description of the fission process.In this work, we propose to constrain the description of this parameter by using fission reactions induced byprotons and light ions on 208Pb at high kinetic energies. The experiment was performed at GSI (Darmstadt),where the combined use of the inverse kinematics technique with an efficient detection setup allowed us tomeasure the atomic number of the two fission fragments in coincidence. This measurement permitted us to obtainwith high precision the partial fission cross sections and the width of the charge distribution as a function of theatomic number of the fissioning system. These data and others previously measured, covering a large range infissility, are compared to state-of-the-art calculations. The results reveal that total and partial fission cross sectionscannot unambiguously constrain the level density at ground-state and saddle-point deformations and additionalobservables, such as the width of the charge distribution of the final fission fragments, are required.

Abstract: Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAM, A search for neutrino oscillations induced by Lorentz violation has been performed using 4,438 live-days of Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data. The Lorentz violation is included in addition to standard three-flavor oscillations using the nonperturbative standard model extension (SME), allowing the use of the full range of neutrino path lengths, ranging from 15 to 12,800 km, and energies ranging from 100 MeV to more than 100 TeV in the search. No evidence of Lorentz violation was observed, so limits are set on the renormalizable isotropic SME coefficients in the eμ, μτ, and eτ sectors, improving the existing limits by up to 7 orders of magnitude and setting limits for the first time in the neutrino μτ sector of the SME, We would like to thank A. Abstract: Total fission cross sections of Pb-208 induced by protons have been determined at 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV. The experiment was performed at GSI Darmstadt where the combined use of the inverse kinematics technique with an efficient detection setup allowed us to determine these cross sections with an uncertainty below 6%. This result was achieved by an accurate beam selection and registration of both fission fragments in coincidence which were also clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. These data solve existing discrepancies between previous measurements, providing new values for the Prokofiev systematics. The data also allow us to investigate the fission process at high excitation energies and small deformations. In particular, some fundamental questions about fission dynamics have been addressed, which are related to dissipative and transient time effects.

Abstract: The trilepton nucleon decay modes p→e+νν and p→μ+νν violate |Δ(B-L)| by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kt yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τp→e+νν>1.7×10(32) years and τp→μ+νν>2.2×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.

Abstract: The neutral current ${e}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}p$ cross section has been measured up to values of Bjorken $x\ensuremath{\cong}1$ with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of $187\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and $142\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{+}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=318\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. Differential cross sections in $x$ and ${Q}^{2}$, the exchanged boson virtuality, are presented for ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\ge}725\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$. An improved reconstruction method and greatly increased amount of data allows a finer binning in the high-$x$ region of the neutral current cross section and leads to a measurement with much improved precision compared to a similar earlier analysis. The measurements are compared to Standard Model expectations based on a variety of recent parton distribution functions.

Abstract: We present a technique for the computation of the Green's tensor in three-dimensional stratified media composed of an arbitrary number of layers with different permittivities and permeabilities (including metals with a complex permittivity). The practical implementation of this technique is discussed in detail. In particular, we show how to efficiently handle the singularities occurring in Sommerfeld integrals, by deforming the integration path in the complex plane. Examples assess the accuracy of this approach and illustrate the physical properties of the Green's tensor, which represents the field radiated by three orthogonal dipoles embedded in the multilayered medium.

Abstract: The electromagnetic (EM) properties of infinitely periodic dielectric and metallic systems have been studied extensively in the context of photonic band gap (PBG) structures [1,2], where powerful numerical methods exist that take advantage of the periodicity. Any physical realization of a PBG structure, however, is finite, and thus will have electromagnetic properties and phenomena distinct from an infinite structure. Such phenomena may include surface modes, sensitivity to boundary termination, or band-edge resonances [3 ‐ 5]. The objective of this Letter is twofold. First, we present a new method of computing the EM properties of a finite PBG structure. Second, we use this approach to study an array of finite-height dielectric cylinders on a substrate, illuminated with an evanescent field. This geometry was chosen to demonstrate the versatility of the scattering method, since it is a nontrivial three-dimensional finite system with open boundary conditions. Furthermore, this configuration is accessible experimentally, requiring only a single PBG layer which could readily be fabricated by lithographic methods. Accurate numerical methods previously reported for calculating the properties of finite PBG structures include modal method [6], finite difference time domain [7], transfer matrix [8,9], and repeated supercell [10]. Our method uses a scattering solution to obtain the EM modes and modes density associated with an arbitrary finite PBG region. The scattering solution is based on the Green’s tensor technique in the frequency domain. Abstract: We develop a fully vectorial formalism for the investigation of electromagnetic scattering in polarizable backgrounds, i.e., where the scatterers are not in vacuum but situated in a medium with a dielectric permittivity different from unity. Our approach is based on the Green's tensor technique and the corresponding Green's tensors for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) systems are developed. The analysis of 2D systems is not restricted to the case where transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes are decoupled, but treated in a general manner. Practical examples illustrate the application of the method: scattering by a microcavity for two dimensions and color formation in opal for three dimensions.

Abstract: Recently, local probes used in optical experiments added a new dimension to the study of the optical properties of small particles lying on a surface. Until now, several theoretical frameworks, developed to understand the interaction of optical fields with mesoscopic and nanoscopic objects, emphasized mainly the prediction of the electric near-field distributions generated by these structures. This paper demonstrates how such subwavelength dielectric surface structures also produce a particular confinement of the optical magnetic near field when the sample is illuminated by a surface wave.

Abstract: Some 15 years ago, optical topographic signals with subwavelength resolution were obtained independently by several experimental teams. Since this exploratory period, a growing number of experimental configurations have been proposed and continuously developed. Simultaneously, this research field was supported by different theoretical works, aimed at developing our understanding of the interaction of optical fields with mesoscopic objects. Over the past three years, several theoretical frameworks have been proposed (Green's functions, field susceptibility, boundary conditions methods, multiple multipoles expansions, etc.). In this paper, an attempt at a careful comparison between two classes of numerical models is presented. Using the same test object, we discuss and compare the numerical solutions issued from a reciprocal-space perturbative method (Rayleigh approximation) and the solution originating from a direct-space integral approach (Green's function or field susceptibility). The discussion is given for different values of the relevant experimental parameters. The convergence of both approaches is investigated.

Abstract: Deep inelastic $e~-p$ scattering has been studied in both the charged-current (CC) and neutral-current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared, $Q~2$, between 400 GeV$~2$ and the kinematic limit of 87500 GeV$~2$ using the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections, $ d\sigma/dQ~2 $, are presented. For $Q~2 \simeq M_W~2$, where $M_W$ is the mass of the $W$ boson, the CC and NC cross sections have comparable magnitudes, demonstrating the equal strengths of the weak and electromagnetic interactions at high $Q~2$. The $Q~2$ dependence of the CC cross section determines the mass term in the CC propagator to be $M_{W} = 76 \pm 16 \pm 13$GeV.

Abstract: Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAM, Three-jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and photoproduction was investigated with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of up to 127pb-1. Measurements of differential cross sections are presented as functions of angular correlations between the three jets in the final state and the proton-beam direction. These correlations provide a stringent test of perturbative QCD and show sensitivity to the contributions from different color configurations. Fixed-order perturbative calculations assuming the values of the color factors CF, CA, and TF as derived from a variety of gauge groups were compared to the measurements to study the underlying gauge group symmetry. Abstract: We investigate the mediation of symmetry-forbidden atomic transitions using plasmonic nanostructures. We show that the excitation of the electric dipole-forbidden, quadrupole-allowed 6 2S1/2 − 5 2D5/2 transition in cesium may be enhanced by more than 6 orders of magnitude in the intense, inhomogeneous near field of a plasmonic nanoantenna. Using optical reciprocity, the enhancement can be understood to apply to spontaneous emission as well, allowing the fast and efficient optical detection of excited atoms.

Abstract: When two objects of subwavelength size interact in the presence of a light beam, a spatially confined electromagnetic field arises in a small spatial region located at the immediate proximity of the particles. In scanning probe microscopy, such induced short-range interactions change the magnitude of the forces interacting between the probe tip and the substrate. Depending on the frequency of light excitation with respect to those of the gap modes associated with the tip-sample junction, these inductive forces act to pull the probe toward the surface. Such an effect can be used to record optical adsorption of various samples with an atomic-force microscope. In this paper we show that the accurate description of the physical processes responsible for these forces can be analyzed within the framework of the localized field-susceptibility method. Practical solutions for the light-inductive force were found by discretization of the probe apex in real space. All multiple interactions including reflections with a substrate of arbitrary profile were accounted for by self-consistent procedures. We can therefore present simulations performed on systems of experimental interest.

Abstract: Decays of the [ital D][sup 0] meson to [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup 0] and [ital [bar K]][sup 0][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] and of the [ital D][sup +] to [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +] have been analyzed for resonant substructure. We present results on the amplitudes and phases of each decay mode and compare the results with other measurements. We confirm the highly nonresonant nature of the [ital D][sup +] to [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +] decays. There is general agreement with theoretical models for the branching ratios measured.

Abstract: We describe a general theoretical framework based on the Bergman spectral representation to study how a nanostructure interacts with an external electromagnetic field. The selection rules for localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) are obtained by implementing the group theory upon the electric vector field. The influence of symmetry breaking on the splitting of degenerated modes and the switching of dark modes by specific illuminations are discussed. These results emphasize the fact that the selection rules for a vector field are different from the case of a scalar field and essentially induced by the geometry of the structure. Finally, this work not only points out that measurements of LSPRs may result in very different results with different external fields, but also provides a strategy to selectively excite specific LSPRs of plasmonic structures.

Abstract: Using data from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691, we have measured the branching ratio for the decay {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} to be (5.0{plus minus}0.8{plus minus}0.9)%. We see no evidence for the decay {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{ital K0} and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 0.12%. The large {ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} branching ratio (relative to {ital K}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}) indicates either a lack of color suppression or significant elastic final-state interactions. The upper limit on the {ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{ital K0} mode indicates that final-state interactions mix final states such as {ital K}{sup +}{ital K{minus}} or {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} into the {ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{ital K0} less than 27% of the time at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We have searched for the exclusive semileptonic decay modes {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{pi}{pi}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}} and {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup *}{pi}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}} in the data from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691. With good sensitivity, we observe no signals in the channels {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}} and {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}}, and set upper limits of {ital B}({ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}all {ital {bar K}} {sup *}{pi}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}}){lt}1.2% and {ital B}({ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}all {ital {bar K}}{pi}{pi}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}}) {lt}0.9%, at the 90% confidence level. (For these limits we use isospin invariance to extract limits which include all charge states.) These modes are expected to be the most common semileptonic decays next to the dominant {ital {bar K}e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}} and {ital {bar K}} {sup *}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}}, but the observed limits represent a small fraction of the inclusive semileptonic branching ratio of (17.0{plus minus}1.9{plus minus}1.7)%.

Abstract: Using data from Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691, we measure the ratio of branching fractions between the Cabibbo-suppressed modes {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+})/{ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}) to be 1.95{plus minus}0.34{plus minus}0.22. We also report branching fractions for the modes {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+} and {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +} relative to the Cabibbo-allowed decay {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}. Furthermore, we place an upper limit of 0.45 at the 90% C.L. on the {ital CP}-violating asymmetry in {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+} vs {ital {bar D}} {sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+} decays.

Abstract: We have studied the exclusive semileptonic decay mode {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}} in the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691. We find the ratio of {ital B}({ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}})/{ital B}({ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}) to be 0.66{plus minus}0.09{plus minus}0.14, corresponding to a {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}} branching ratio of 6.1{plus minus}0.9{plus minus}1.6%. Combining this result with our measurement of the {ital D}{sup +} lifetime, we find {Gamma}({ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital e+}{nu}{sub {ital e}})=(5.6{plus minus}0.8{plus minus}1.5){times}10{sup 10} s{sup {minus}1}. We also find, using E691 averages, the ratio of decay rates {Gamma}({ital D}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup *}{ital e}{nu})/{Gamma}({ital D}{r arrow}{ital Ke}{nu}) to be 0.55{plus minus}0.14.

Abstract: Using data from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691, we have measured branching ratios for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup 0}{ital K+}{pi}{sup {minus}}, {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup 0}{ital K{minus}}{pi}{sup +}, {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K+}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}, and {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}}. The data show evidence for several quasi-two-body decays including {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup *+}{ital K{minus}} and {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup *0}{ital K*0}, but not {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup *{minus}}{ital K+}. The relative rates of the charged decays indicates that final-state mesons containing virtual-{ital W}{sup +}-decay quarks are more likely to emerge as vector mesons than are those containing the spectator quarks. The high rate observed for {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup *0}{ital K*0} indicates that hadronic final-state interactions play a measurable role in charm decays.

Abstract: Inclusive (KSKS0)-K-0 production in ep collisions at the DESY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5 fb(-1). Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f(2)(1270)/a(2)(0)(1320), f(2)(')(1525) and f(0)(1710). Masses and widths were obtained using a fit which takes into account theoretical predictions based on SU(3) symmetry arguments, and are consistent with the Particle Data Group values. The f(0)(1710) state, which has a mass consistent with a glueball candidate, was observed with a statistical significance of 5 standard deviations. However, if this state is the same as that seen in gamma gamma -> (KSKS0)-K-0, it is unlikely to be a pure glueball state.

47. Narrow-Band Multiresonant Plasmon Nanostructure for the Coherent Control of Light: An Optical Analog of the Xylophone

Abstract: We demonstrate that it is possible to combine several small metallic particles in a very compact geometry without loss of their individual modal properties by adding a gold metallic film underneath. This film essentially acts as a "ground plane" which channels the optical field of each particle and decreases the interparticle coupling. The localization of the electric field can then be controlled temporally by illuminating the chain with a chirped pulse. The sign of the chirp controls the excitation sequence of the particles with great flexibility.

Abstract: Molecular fluorescence decay is significantly modified when the emitting molecule is located near a plasmonic structure. When the lateral sizes of such structures are reduced to nanometer-scale cross sections, they can be used to accurately control and amplify the emission rate. In this Rapid Communication, we extend Green's dyadic method to quantitatively investigate both radiative and nonradiative decay channels experienced by a single fluorescent molecule confined in an adjustable dielectric-metal nanogap. The technique produces data in excellent agreement with current experimental work.

Abstract: We report on the characterization of long-range surface plasmon waveguide bends at telecom wavelengths (lambda=1550 nm). The structures consist of a thin Au stripe embedded in a transparent polymer film. When the polymer thickness is larger than the lateral extension of the plasmon, the stripe sustains a conventional long-range mode; in the opposite case, the mode is hybrid because its field distribution is confined by total internal reflection in the dielectric cladding. This hybridization increases the damping by absorption but dramatically reduces the radiation loss that occurs for curved geometries, such as bends. Our results are supported quantitatively by full-wave finite-element simulations.

Abstract: We have measured the three form factors governing the decay {ital D}{sup +}{r arrow}{ital {bar K}} {sup *0}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}}, observed in Fermilab photoproduction experiment E691, using the complete decay distribution of the data. The results are {ital A}{sub 1}(0)=0.46{plus minus}0.05{plus minus}0.05, {ital A}{sub 2}(0)=0.0{plus minus}0.2{plus minus}0.1, and {ital V}(0)=0.9{plus minus}0.3{plus minus}0.1 for the two axial-vector and the vector form factors, respectively. The {ital {bar K}} {sup *0} mesons have a ratio of longitudinal to transverse polarization of 1.8{sub {minus}0.4}{sup +0.6}{plus minus}0.3. These results are significantly different from values predicted by a number of different models.
