Light shifts are known to be an important limitation to the mid- and long-term fractional frequency stability of different types of atomic clocks. In this article, we demonstrate the experimental implementation of an anti-light-shift interrogation protocol onto a continuous-wave (cw) microcell atomic clock based on coherent population trapping (CPT). The method, inspired by the autobalanced Ramsey spectroscopy technique demonstrated in pulsed atomic clocks, consists in the extraction of atomic based information from two successive light-shifted clock frequencies obtained at two different laser-power values. Two error signals, computed from the linear combination of signals acquired along a symmetric sequence, are managed in a dual-loop configuration to generate a clock frequency free from light shift. Using this method, the sensitivity of the clock frequency to both laser-power and microwave-power variations can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude compared to normal operation. In the present experiment, the consideration of the nonlinear light-shift dependence allows enhancement of the light-shift mitigation. The implemented technique allows an improvement of the clock Allan deviation for time scales higher than 1000 s. This method can be applied in various kinds of atomic clocks such as CPT-based atomic clocks, double-resonance $\mathrm{Rb}$ clocks, or cell-stabilized lasers.

We show that the light shift in atomic clocks can be suppressed using time variation of the interrogation field intensity. By measuring the clock output at two intensity levels, error signals can be generated that simultaneously stabilize a local oscillator to an atomic transition and correct for the shift of this transition caused by the interrogating optical field. These methods are suitable for optical clocks using one- and two-photon transitions, as well as for microwave clocks based on coherent population trapping or direct interrogation. The use of matter-wave interferometry to detect inertial forces is already a powerful tool in precision measurement, but extending it beyond the lab to navigation applications requires optimization for compact setups. Here researchers characterize point-source atom interferometry (PSI) in a centimeter-scale cell, using an expanding cloud of cold atoms and an optical Raman interaction for simultaneous measurement of the system's acceleration along the Raman laser beams plus its rotation vector projected into the plane perpendicular to the beams. The sensitivity measurements presented here inform the further development of quantum inertial sensing that balances size and performance.

The off-resonant AC Stark shift for coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances probed with Ramsey spectroscopy is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Measurements with laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb atoms show excellent quantitative agreement with a simple theory. The shift depends on the relative intensity of the two CPT light fields, but depends only weakly on the total intensity. Since the origin of the shift is through couplings of the interrogation light to off-resonant excited state hyperfine levels, the size and sign of the shift depend on the specific interrogation scheme. Atomic clocks based on coherent population trapping (CPT) are of great interest for portable applications, due to their high performance, low power requirements, and potential for miniaturization. Slow frequency drift, however, limits their holdover ability on long time scales. This study reports a CPT clock that minimizes long-term drift, with a fractional frequency stability of $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{-13}$ over the span of an hour---ten times as good as previous CPT clocks. After successful shrinking of the laser-cooling apparatus, this clock could see commercial use, as the atoms fall just a few millimeters during a typical probe period.

Field-grade atomic clocks capable of primary standard performance in compact physics packages would be of significant value in applications ranging from network synchronization to inertial navigation. A coherent-population-trapping clock featuring laser-cooled $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms and pulsed Ramsey interrogation is a strong candidate for this technology if the frequency biases can be minimized and controlled. Here we characterize the light shift in a cold-atom coherent-population-trapping clock, explaining observed shifts in terms of phase shifts that arise during the formation of dark-state coherences combined with optical-pumping effects caused by unwanted incoherent light in the interrogation spectrum. Measurements are compared with existing and new theoretical treatments, and a laser configuration is identified that would reduce clock frequency uncertainty from light shifts to a fractional frequency level of $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}/\ensuremath{\nu}=4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}14}$ per 100 kHz of laser frequency uncertainty.

We decelerated an atomic beam of ${}^{87}$Rb using a stimulated-emission slowing technique that employs a bichromatic standing light wave of high intensity, and increased the atom number in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of low capture velocity by up to a factor of 14, and the load rate into the MOT by a factor of 20. We performed the slowing over distances under 1.5 cm with 5.2 mW of total power in the bichromatic beams. The average stimulated force was 2.2 times the maximum spontaneous emission force, and could be made even stronger in a smaller apparatus.

We demonstrate a direct resonant interaction between the mechanical motion of a mesoscopic resonator and the spin degrees of freedom of a sample of neutral atoms in the gas phase. This coupling, mediated by a magnetic particle attached to the tip of the miniature mechanical resonator, excites a coherent precession of the atomic spins about a static magnetic field. The novel coupled atom-resonator system may enable development of low-power, high-performance sensors, and enhance research efforts connected with the manipulation of cold atoms, quantum control, and high-resolution microscopy.

We were recently made aware of an article f1g published some time before our recent paper f2g, which addressed much of the same subject matter. In part of their article, Levi et al. analyzed the effects of a nonuniform transverse beam intensity profile on the line shape of coherent population trapping sCPTd resonances. Specifically, they derived an expression for the line shape of both the emitted rf power in a CPT maser and the fluorescence spectrum in a traditional CPT experiment, when a laser beam with a Gaussian beam profile is used to excite the resonance. In our paper, we derived an expression equivalent to the latter, which does not correspond to the results of f1g. Our result fEq. s13dg contains a term

Using laser optical pumping, widths and frequency shifts are determined for microwave transitions between ground-state hyperfine components of {sup 85}Rb and {sup 87}Rb atoms contained in vapor cells with alkane anti-relaxation coatings. The results are compared with data on Zeeman relaxation obtained in nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) experiments, a comparison important for quantitative understanding of spin-relaxation mechanisms in coated cells. By comparing cells manufactured over a forty-year period we demonstrate the long-term stability of coated cells, an important property for atomic clocks and magnetometers.

We analyze the line shape and width of atomic coherent-population-trapping (CPT) resonances excited by laser beams with different transverse intensity profiles. A dramatic difference in the resonance line shape is found when comparing a beam with a 'steplike' profile to a beam with a Gaussian profile. In particular, for nonuniform profiles, a non-Lorentzian functional form is given that is more appropriate for describing the nonlinear resonance line shape than is a conventional Lorentzian. Our analysis is supported by measurements of CPT line shapes in a thermal vapor of {sup 85}Rb.
