Abstract: We have searched for the reaction e+e-, where f is either an electron, muon, or charged pion, at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC PEP storage ring. One candidate event is found while 2.3 events are expected from known processes. We would expect to see 11 events if the cross section for e+e- at s=29 GeV were enhanced by the factor of 4.7 which the ALEPH Collaboration reports for s=91 GeV. We also look for e+e- and e+e-, and for e+e-, using a similar analysis procedure, and see the number of events predicted by the standard model. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We have searched for a heavy charged lepton with an associated neutrino of nearly the same mass in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation data taken with the Mark II detector at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. In order to suppress contamination from conventional two-photon reactions, this analysis uses a novel, radiative-tagging technique. Requiring the presence of an isolated, energetic photon allows a search for lepton doublets with mass splittings smaller than that previously accessible to experiment. No evidence for such a new lepton doublet has been found, enabling limits to be placed on allowed mass combinations. Mass splittings as low as 250--400 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} are excluded for charged-lepton masses between 500 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and 10 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}.

Abstract: Data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} storage ring PEP was used to search for exclusive decays of {ital D}{sup {plus minus}} and {ital B}{sup {plus minus}} mesons into two charged leptons plus a charged pion or kaon. All possible charge and lepton combinations consistent with charge conservation were considered and no evidence for any signals was found. We obtain upper limits for the various branching ratios ranging from 2.5{times}10{sup {minus}3} to 9.2{times}10{sup {minus}3}, at a 90% confidence level. Some of these limits can be used to constrain leptoquark masses in various models.

Abstract: We have measured the K/sup 0/+K /sup 0/ inclusive cross section in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV with the Mark II detector SLAC PEP. We find 1.27 +- 0.03 +- 0.15 K/sup 0/+K /sup 0/ per hadronic event. We have also used time-of-flight particle identification to measure the K/sup + -/ rate over the momentum range 300--900 MeV/c.

Abstract: We use data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP to study inclusive lepton production in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV. From fits to the inclusive lepton momentum and transverse-momentum spectra we measure the semileptonic branching ratios for charm and bottom hadrons. We also determine with good precision the mean value of the bottom fragmentation function using both electron and muon samples. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The decay modes with multiple neutral mesons in the final states have been studied with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The branching ratio for the decay mode - 20 is found to be consistent with the theoretical expectation. Abstract: We have studied several features of the production of charged-hadron pairs by ..gamma gamma.. collisions. We have measured the f/sup 0/ partial width GAMMA/sub f//sup 0/..--> gamma gamma..(Q/sup 2/) for Q/sup 2/ in the range 0 gamma gamma.. = 2.52 +- 0.13 +- 0.38 keV at Q/sup 2/roughly-equal0. The measured Q/sup 2/ dependence is in agreement with the generalized vector-dominance model. The cross section for ..gamma gamma -->..(..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/+K/sup +/K/sup -/) in the mass region 1.6< or =M/sub pipi/< or =2.5 GeV/c/sup 2/ has also been measured and the result compared with that expected from the QCD continuum.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/e/sup +/e/sup -/ and e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. There is no evidence for unconventional sources for such events.

Abstract: We present results on c+ production in 29-GeV e+e- annihilation. The c+ are observed via their semileptonic decays to e+X and +X. With radiative corrections, we find (e+e-c+X)Bc+eX)= 1.5±0.6±0.5 pb or 0.0038±0.0015±0.0012 c+e+X decay per hadronic event, and (e+e-c+X)B(c+X)= 1.4±1.4±0.4 pb or 0.0035±0.0035±0. 0011 c++X decay per hadronic event. These results can be used to place constraints on the predictions of various production models. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The process e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/..gamma..(..gamma..), where one electron scatters at a small angle, is studied with data from the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The data are in excellent agreement with a Monte Carlo calculation and include a large contribution from order ..cap alpha../sup 4/. The ratio of measured to calculated cross sections is R = 0.993 +- 0.017 +- 0.015, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This is a sensitive test of the calculation of the dominant background for neutrino-counting experiments.

Abstract: The inclusive ..gamma.. and ..pi../sup 0/ momentum distributions at the psi have been measured. Using these data and estimates of eta production, it is found that (4.1 +- 0.8) % of psi decays contain a direct photon with energy greater than 60% of the beam energy. The expected momentum distribution for direct photons calculated to lowest order in quantum chromodynamics is qualitatively different from that observed in the data.

Abstract: We have used a high-resolution drift chamber in the Mark II detector at the SLAC e+e- storage ring PEP to measure the lifetimes of the D0 and D+ mesons produced in e+e- annihilations at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 74 decays for the D0 mesons and 23 decays for the D+ mesons, the lifetimes are found to be &=(4.7-0.8+0.9) 0.5×10-13 sec and &=(8.9-2.7+3.8) 1.3×10-13 sec. Abstract: We report a search for long-lived heavy neutrinos produced by the neutral weak current in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Data from the Mark II detector are examined for evidence of events with one or more separated vertices in the radial range of 2 mm to 10 cm. No events were found that were consistent with the search hypothesis, ruling out heavy neutrinos with mean decay lengths of 1 to 20 cm in the mass range 1 to 13 GeV/c2. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The prompt photon decay (3095)+-+- has been studied with the Mark II detector at SPEAR. This channel is found to contain a 00 component with 00 masses concentrated between 1.4 and 2.0 GeV/c2. The branching fraction for the 00 decay with masses less than 2.0 GeV/c2 is measured to be (1.25±0.35±0.40)×10-3. © 1982 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We observe both the J/sup P//sup C/ = 1/sup + +/ f/sub 1/(1285) and the J/sup P//sup C/ = 0/sup - +/ eta'(958) in tagged two-photon interactions and the eta'(958) in untagged interactions. The measured Q/sup 2/ dependence and decay distribution support the f/sub 1/(1285) spin and parity assignment. The radiative width of the f/sub 1/(1285) is measured as (M/sup 2//Q/sup 2/)GAMMA/sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma..//sub */ = 9.4 +- 2.5 +- 1.7 keV, on the assumption of a rho-pole form factor.

Abstract: A peak in the pK-+ and p»K+- invariant-mass spectra at 2.2850.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (c). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.0370.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. Abstract: The decay mode ψ′→γγψ has been studied with the Mark-II detector at SPEAR. New measurements of branching ratios for decays of the type ψ′→γχ, χ→γψ involving known χ states are presented. The existence of a χ state of mass near 3455 MeV/c2 produced in this decay chain is not confirmed, and the upper limit (90% confidence level) of the product of branching ratios is measured to be 0.13%. A new decay mode, ψ′→π0ψ, which violates isospin conservation is observed with branching ratio (0.15±0.06)%. © 1980 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The branching fraction for tau/sup -/..-->..5..pi../sup + -/(..pi../sup 0/)..nu../sub tau/ is measured from data accumulated with the Mark II detector at PEP. Four events are observed with an estimated hadronic background of (0.03/sub -0.02//sup +0.04/) events and a background from tau/sup -/..-->..e..pi../sup + -/..pi../sup 0/..nu../sub tau/ of (0.05/sub -0.04//sup +0.07/) events. This results in a measured branching fraction of (0.16 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)%. The candidate events are used to establish an upper limit of 125 MeV/c/sup 2/ on the ..nu../sub tau/ mass at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We confirm the observation of a spin-1 resonance at 1423 MeV in the K/sub S//sup 0/K/sup +- /..pi../sup minus-or-plus/ system produced in single-tagged two-photon interactions. The Dalitz plot indicates that this resonance decays primarily via a K/sup */K intermediate state. We measure a radiative width times branching ratio B/sub K//sub K-bar//sub ..pi../(M/sup 2//Q/sup 2/)GAMMA/sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma..//sub */ = 3.2 +- 1.4 +- 0.6 keV on the assumption of a rho-pole form factor.

Abstract: In a study of {psi}'(3684) radiative decays with the Mark II detector at SPEAR, we observe the decay sequence {psi}' {yields} {gamma}{eta}{sub c}(2980), with the {eta}{sub c}(2980) decaying into several completely reconstructed hadronic modes. We obtain a mass M = 2980 ± 8 MeV / c{sup 2} and a width {Gamma} < 40 MeV / c{sup 2} (90% confidence level), and present estimates of some of the decay branching ratios.

Abstract: We have studied the energy-energy correlation in e+e- annihilation into hadrons at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. We find to O(s2) that s=0.1580.0030.008 if hadronization is described by string fragmentation. Independent fragmentation schemes give s=0.100.14, and give poor agreement with the data. A leading-log shower fragmentation model is found to describe the data well. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

These events are attributed to charmed baryon pair production and subsequent ..lambda../sub c/ semileptonic decay. Various semileptonic branching ratios of the ..lambda../sub c/ are determined, including BR(..lambda../sub c/..-->..e/sup +/X) = (4.5 +- 1.7)%.

From the observed cross section and known branching fractions of the eta' is GAMMA/sub gammagamma/ = 5.9 +- 1.6 +- 1.2 keV and the total width is GAMMA = 300 +- 90 +- 60 keV (statistical and systematic errors).

Abstract: Inclusive ..cap omega../sup -/ production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been measured with the Mark II detector. From an integrated luminosity of 207 pb/sup -1/, we determine a production rate of 0.014 +- 0.006 +- 0.004 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event. This is roughly 35 times the Lund-model prediction of 0.0004 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event, but comparable to the Webber-model prediction of 0.006 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event. The large rate of ..cap omega../sup -/ production, compared with production rates for other baryons, and with theoretical predictions based on diquark models, indicates that spin suppression does not hold for ..cap omega../sup -/ production.

Abstract: We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e-qq»g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e-qq») from e+e- annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Multihadronic e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q/sub 2/-Q/sub 1/, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p/sub perpendicular/, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e/sup +/e/sup -/ data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z/sup 0/, are also presented.

The eta fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. eta' production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. Abstract: The Mark II detector at SPEAR has been used to study D-meson production in e+e- annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 6.7 GeV. The neutral and charged D mesons are identified from their K and K decay modes. Measurements of RD and of the inclusive differential cross section s ddz are presented. The quasi-two-body cross sections DD, D*D, and D*D* are derived from an overall fit to the D recoil spectra. No evidence was found for the associated production of charmed mesons and charmed baryons. © 1982 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: A high-statistics study of psi decays into baryon final states has been done with the Mark II detector at SPEAR. A detailed test of baryon-antibaryon decay modes is presented. Substantial resonance formation is observed in multibody decays of the psi involving baryons. Branching ratios for a large number of decay modes are given, including the radiative decay psi..-->..pp-bar..gamma... The flavor-SU(3)-forbidden decays psi..--> sigma../sup + -/(1385)Sigma-bar /sup - +/+charge conjugate are observed with substantial branching ratios.

Abstract: Inclusive psi production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been measured with the Mark II detector. The psi cross section is found to be 1.1 +- 0.5 +- 0.4 pb. After subtraction of the expected contribution from B decay, an upper limit of 0.02sigma/sub ..mu..//sub ..mu../ is obtained for other sources of psi production.

These values are consistent with the expectations for conventional decays of the tau.

Abstract: We report results of a search for events of the type e+e-jet+missing transverse momentum using the Mark II detector at PEP. Two candidate events were found, but both could come from known sources of background. A specific model for the origin of UA1 monojet events as the decay of a Z boson into two light Higgs bosons is eliminated by this search. © 1985 The American Physical Society.
