Abstract

The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons. The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared. Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and magnetization currents in the proton.

Abstract

The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q2) has been extracted in the range 0.7≤Q2≤6.0(GeV/c)2 from cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in coincidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are compared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimensional scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract

We have observed strong peak shifts in the magnetotunneling I(V, B⊥) characteristics of strained p-Si/Si 1-x Ge x double-barrier resonant tunneling structures as the transverse field B⊥ orientation is rotated in the sample plane. These peak shifts map out the in-plane anisotropy of the light- and heavy-hole subbands in the Si-Ge well. At large in-plane waves vectors, the heavy- and light-hole E (k⊥) contours are strongly crimped: the heavy-hole E (k⊥) is dilated in the and compressed in the directions, while the light-hole anisotropy id rotated by 45 o with respect to that of the heavy hole

Abstract

The deep donors (DX centers) which supply carriers in many GaAs-${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As heterostructures are known to be metastable at low temperatures, maintaining a nonequilibrium state because of a microscopic barrier to recombination if ionized. Earlier modeling by three of us [Kumar, Laux, and Stern, Phys. Rev. B 42, 5166 (1990)] incorrectly assumed the donors in the ${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As to be in equilibrium with the electrons in the GaAs channel. We present data on the threshold voltage of heterostructures cooled under bias and results of calculations which assume that the deep donor charge is locked at the value attained at 100 K when the sample is cooled with a bias voltage applied. The revised calculations account for part of the discrepancy between the calculated threshold voltage for the quantum dot structure used in experiments by Hansen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 2168 (1989)] and the observed value. Part of the remaining discrepancy may be due to processing damage.

Abstract

In magnetotunneling I(V,B ∥) measurements on strained p-type Si/Si 1-x Ge x double-barrier resonant tunneling structures we observe heavy-hole satellite peaks that correspond to tunneling with Δn=1 and 2 changes in the Landau index n. The relative intensity of the satellite peaks excludes scattering as a possible mechanism. We ascribe the 4n=1,2 satellites to elastic tunneling made possible by Landau-level mixing in the valence band predicted by the Luttinger Hamiltonian in a magnetic field. The satellite peak spacing yields the valence-band Landau-level structure in strained Si 1-x Ge x quantum wells

Abstract

The resonances of a resonant tunneling structure are probed by a magnetic field applied parallel to the interfaces, which enables us to investigate the local band structure in k space. By rotating the magnetic field in the plane of the interfaces, the energy at constant k ∥ is investigated. Using this technique we have studied differently strained Si/Si 1-x Ge x quantum wells; we see a large anisotropy of the energy levels, with the symmetry axes of light holes and heavy holes being rotated 45 o with respect to each other

Abstract

The ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, GEp/GMp, was obtained by measuring Pt and P, the transverse and longitudinal recoil proton polarization components, respectively, for the elastic epepreaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5 GeV2. In the single-photon exchange approximation, GEp/GMp is directly proportional to Pt/P. The simultaneous measurement of Pt and P in a polarimeter reduces systematic uncertainties. The results for GEp/GMp show a systematic decrease with increasing Q2, indicating for the first time a definite difference in the distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton. The data have been reanalyzed and their systematic uncertainties have become significantly smaller than those reported previously. (Less)

The physics program in Hall A at Jefferson Lab commenced in the summer of 1997 with a detailed investigation of the ^(16)O(e,e′p) reaction in quasielastic, constant (q,ω) kinematics at Q^2≈0.8(GeV/c)^2, q≈1GeV/c, and ω≈445MeV. Use of a self-calibrating, self-normalizing, thin-film waterfall target enabled a systematically rigorous measurement. Abstract

The first $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ polarization transfer measurements on a nucleus heavier than deuterium have been carried out at Jefferson Laboratory. Transverse and longitudinal components of the polarization of protons ejected in the reaction ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ were measured in quasielastic perpendicular kinematics at a ${Q}^{2}$ of 0.8 $(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The data are in good agreement with state of the art calculations.

Abstract

We observe the magnetic-field-induced bifurcation of quantum levels into surface states and bulklike Landau States. The disruption of the electric field quantization by a magnetic field is most dramatic for electrons bound in two dimensions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The interplay between competing spatial and magnetic quantization mechanisms results in a pronounced and complex level splitting. The observed splitting of zero-dimensional energy levels depends critically on the size of the quantum dots, and can be explained with a calculated single-particle energy spectrum.

Abstract

We have made magnetotransport measurements on two-dimensional electronic systems confined to AlAs by ${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathrm{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$As. We have determined the effective mass (${m}_{111}$=0.49${m}_{0}$), the effective g factor (3.1), and the relaxation time. Even though the lattice constants of GaAs and AlAs are nearly equal, the stress arising from this small mismatch strongly influences the electronic properties of AlAs. For [111]-oriented samples the valley degeneracy is one, and there is an anomalous phase shift in the Shubnikov--de Haas oscillations.

Abstract

We present new data concerning the problem of two-subband transport in a two-dimensional electron gas. We find that the ratio of the mobilities of electrons in the two subbands depends on the details of the confinement potential, while the ratio of the relaxation times determined from the Shubnikov-de Haas effect does not. In all samples studied the relaxation time determined from the amplitude of quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistance is longer for electrons in the upper subband. In addition, we see evidence for the repulsion of quantum levels and the inhibition of spin-flip transitions between quantum levels.

Abstract

We have measured the thermodynamic properties of dispersionless electronic systems. We observe structure in the capacitance of quantum dots reflecting the discrete energy levels of electrons confined in all three spatial dimensions. The spacings of the observed structure and the systematic variation with the degree of confinement are consistent with quantum-size effects.

Abstract

We have made magnetotransport measurements on two-dimensional electronic systems with two subbands occupied. We have determined the mobility for electrons in the lowest and first excited subband and find that the electrons in the upper subband have a higher mobility. This is consistent with our recent determination of the single-particle relaxation time but contrary to previous results and assumptions concerning two-subband transport.
