Warm dense matter is a highly active research area both at the frontier and interface of material science and plasma physics. We assess the performance of commonly used exchange-correlation (XC) approximation (LDA, PBE, PBEsol, and AM05) in the spin-polarized inhomogeneous electron gas under warm dense conditions based on exact path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo calculations. This extends our recent analysis on the relevance of inhomogeneities in the spin-unpolarized warm dense electron gas [Z.~Moldabekov et al., J. Chem. Phys. 155, 124116 (2021)]. We demonstrate that the predictive accuracy of these XC functionals deteriorates with (1) a decrease in density (corresponding to an increase in the inter-electronic correlation strength) and (2) an increase of the characteristic wave number of the density perturbation. We provide recommendations for the applicability of the considered XC functionals at conditions typical for warm dense matter. Furthermore, we hint at future possibilities for constructing more accurate XC functionals under these conditions.

We present a first-principles equation-of-state (EOS) table of deuterium aimed at improving the previously established first-principles equation-of-state table (FPEOS) [S. X. Hu et al., Phys. Rev. B 84, 224109 (2011); S. X. Hu et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 056304 (2015)]. The EOS table presented here, referred to as iFPEOS, introduces (1) a universal density functional theory (DFT) treatment of all density and temperature conditions, (2) a fully consistent treatment of exchange-correlation (XC) thermal effects across the entire range of temperatures covered, and (3) quantum treatment of ions. Based on ab initio molecular dynamics driven by thermal density functional theory, iFPEOS includes density points in the range $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\le}1.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}$ $\mathrm{g}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ and temperature points in the range 800 K $\ensuremath{\le}T\ensuremath{\le}256$ MK, thus covering the challenging warm dense matter (WDM) regime. For an improved description of the electronic structure, iFPEOS employs an advanced free-energy XC density functional with explicit temperature dependence, which is at the metageneralized gradient approximation level of DFT. We use the latest orbital-free free-energy density functional for the high-temperature regime where it shows excellent agreement with standard Mermin-Kohn-Sham DFT. For quantum treatment of ions we use path-integral molecular dynamics in order to take into account nuclear quantum effects. Results are compared to other EOS models and most recent experimental measurements of deuterium properties such as the molecular-to-atomic fluid transition, the principal and reshock Hugoniot, and sound speed. We find that iFPEOS provides an improved agreement with experimental data compared to other first-principles EOS models in the WDM regime for pressures up to 200 GPa and temperatures up to $60\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}000$ K. For higher pressures and temperatures, however, iFPEOS is in agreement with other models in predicting lower compressibility and higher sound speed along the Hugoniot, compared to experiment.

We report on the study of electron kinetics induced by intense femtosecond (fs) laser excitation of electrons in the $5d$ band of Au. Changes in the electron system are observed from the temporal evolution of ac conductivity and conduction electron density. The results reveal an increase of electron thermalization time with excitation energy density, contrary to the Fermi-liquid behavior of the decrease of thermalization time associated with the heating of conduction electrons. This is attributed to the severe mitigation of photoexcitation by Auger decay. The study also uncovers the shortening of $5d$ hole lifetime with the increase of photoexcitation rates. These unique findings provide valuable insights for understanding electron kinetics under extreme nonequilibrium conditions.

Ion dynamics exhibits inherent multiscale characteristics because it contains both atomistic and hydrodynamic behaviors. Although atomic-scale ab initio molecular dynamics is the subject of intense research on warm dense matter, the macroscopic relaxation process contained in the zero-frequency mode of the ionic dynamic structure factor (DSF) cannot be demonstrated due to the limitation of simulation sizes. Here, we fill this gap via the machine-learning deep potential method. To capture the ion dynamics near the hydrodynamic limit with ab initio accuracy, an accurate and efficient electron-temperature-dependent interatomic potential was constructed. We quantitatively verify the consistency of thermal diffusivities obtained from hydrodynamics and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and further provide a microscopic perspective of energy transport to understand the zero-frequency mode of DSF. As implemented in two temperature states, a competitive mechanism is found to account for the damping of the zero-frequency mode.

We show with a recently devised extended first-principles molecular dynamics method that calculated Hugoniots of poly-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$-methylstyrene agree well with precision experimental results of Kritcher et al. [Nature (London) 584, 51 (2020)] and D\"oppner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 025001 (2018)]. The deviation is smaller than 0.8%. This agreement does not sensitively rely on the approximations in the employed first-principles methods as long as underlying physics are well described, as illustrated in the calculation of equation of state for polystyrene covering the warm dense regime. These results may stimulate a broad range of quantitative investigations on warm dense matter that were not thought possible before, and may thus afford a new prospect to the field of inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics.

In the warm dense regime, where the electron temperature is increased to the same order of the Fermi temperature, the dynamical stability of elemental metals depends on its electronic band structure as well as its crystal structure. It has been known that phonon hardening occurs due to an enhanced internal pressure caused by electron excitations as in close-packed simple metals, whereas phonon softening occurs at a specific point in the Brillouin zone as in body-centered cubic metals. Here, we investigate the dynamical stability of binary ordered alloys (Au and Cu) in the L1$_0$ and L1$_2$ structures. By performing first principles calculations on phonon dispersions, we demonstrate that warm dense Au-Cu systems show phonon hardening behavior except the lowest frequency phonon mode at point R of AuCu in the L1$_0$ structure. We show that when a phonon mode is stabilized by long-range interatomic interactions at ambient condition, such a phonon will be destabilized by the short-range nature of the warm dense matters., 8 pages, 6 figures

We present a free-energy density functional theory (DFT)-based methodology for optical property calculations of warm dense matter to cover a wide range of thermodynamic conditions and photon energies including the entire x-ray range. It uses Mermin-Kohn-Sham density functional theory with exchange-correlation (XC) thermal effects taken into account via a fully temperature dependent generalized gradient approximation XC functional. The methodology incorporates a combination of the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) snapshotted Kubo-Greenwood optic data with a single atom in simulation cell calculations to close the photon energy gap between the $L$ and $K$ edges and extend the $K$-edge tail toward many-keV photon energies. This gap arises in the standard scheme due to a prohibitively large number of bands required for the Kubo-Greenwood calculations with AIMD snapshots. Kubo-Greenwood data on snapshots provide an accurate description of optic properties at low photon frequencies slightly beyond the $L$ edge and x-ray absorption near edges structure (XANES) spectra, while data from periodic calculations with single atoms cover the tail regions beyond the edges. To demonstrate its applicability to mid-$Z$ materials where the standard DFT-based approach is not computationally feasible, we have applied it to opacity calculations of warm dense silicon plasmas. These first-principles calculations revealed a very interesting phenomenon of redshift-to-blueshift in $K\ensuremath{-}L$ ($1s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2p$) and $K$-edge absorptions along both isotherm and isochore, which are absent in most continuum-lowering models of traditional plasma physics. This new physics phenomenon can be attributed to the underlying competition between the screening of deeply bound core electrons and the screening of outer-shell electrons caused by warm-dense-plasma conditions. We further demonstrate that the ratio of $1s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2p$ to the $K$-edge x-ray absorptions can be used to characterize warm-dense-plasma conditions. Eventually, based on our absorption calculations, we have established a first-principles opacity table (FPOT) for silicon in a wide range of material densities and temperatures.

We present a finite-temperature density functional theory investigation of the nonequilibrium transient electronic structure of warm dense Li, Al, Cu, and Au created by laser excitation. Photons excite electrons either from the inner shell orbitals or from the valence bands according to the photon energy, and give rise to isochoric heating of the sample. Localized states related to the 3d orbital are observed for Cu when the hole lies in the inner shell 3s orbital. The electrical conductivity for these materials at nonequilibrium states is calculated using the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The change of the electrical conductivity, compared to the equilibrium state, is different for the case of holes in inner shell orbitals or the valence band. This is attributed to the competition of two factors: the shift of the orbital energies due to reduced screening of core electrons, and the increase of chemical potential due to the excitation of electrons. The finite temperature effect of both the electrons and the ions on the electrical conductivity is discussed in detail. Motivated by the poor understanding of the applicability of new exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to warm dense matter (WDM), we designed and performed multiple-shock reverberation compression experiments on dense krypton to evaluate explicitly the implications of recently derived XC functionals. The equation of states of krypton up to 155 GPa and 45 000 K, which ranges from an initial dense gaseous state up to the insulator-metal transition regime, were determined accurately. It is found that the experimental data are better reproduced by the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) XC functional compared to the conventional Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof and Van der Waals (vdW) DF1 functionals, elucidating that the introduction of the kinetic energy density and the intermediate-range vdW interaction is decisive. However, the incorporation of long-range interactions into the SCAN ($\mathrm{SCAN}+\mathrm{rVV}10$ XC functional) results in a noticeably stiffer prediction due to an overestimation of the density and internal energy of the system at low densities and temperatures. Our evaluation of the Karasiev-Sjostrom-Dufty-Trickey free-energy functional experimentally validates the XC thermal effect in the WDM regime, verifies the previous predictions, and sheds light on a direction for future theoretical efforts. Finally, a phase diagram of krypton is given, which provides a clear picture for understanding the thermophysical behavior of krypton in a wider temperature-pressure range.

Density functional calculations can fail for want of an accurate exchange-correlation approximation. The energy can instead be extracted from a sequence of density functional calculations of conditional probabilities (CP-DFT). Simple CP approximations yield usefully accurate results for two-electron ions, the hydrogen dimer, and the uniform gas at all temperatures. CP-DFT has no self-interaction error for one electron, and correctly dissociates H2, both major challenges. For warm dense matter, classical CP-DFT calculations can overcome the convergence problems of Kohn-Sham DFT., 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We show that the entire x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) spectrum, including both elastic and inelastic features, can be calculated from first principles in the framework of quantum perturbation theories. Our derivation shows that the elastic scattering feature in a warm dense regime is different from that of condensed matter at low temperature. In addition to the contribution from spatial fluctuations of electronic density, which dominates elastic scattering at low temperature, there is an extra contribution from partially occupied inner-shell states, which is important in the warm dense regime. Calculated XRTS of isochorically heated beryllium agrees well with previous experimental measurements, which may give this method a further edge on interpreting XRTS spectra compared to empirical modeling methods.

There is growing interest in warm dense matter (WDM), an exotic state on the border between condensed matter and plasmas. Due to the simultaneous importance of quantum and correlation effects, WDM is complicated to treat theoretically. A key role has been played by ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations, and recently extensive results for thermodynamic quantities have been obtained. The first extension of PIMC simulations to the dynamic structure factor of the uniform electron gas was reported by Dornheim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 255001 (2018)]. This was based on an accurate reconstruction of the dynamic local field correction. Here we extend this concept to other dynamical quantities of the warm dense electron gas including the dynamic susceptibility, the dielectric function, and the conductivity.

In this paper we study thermodynamic properties of uniform electron gas (UEG) over wide density and temperature range, using the improved fermionic-path-integral Monte Carlo (FPIMC) method. This method demonstrates a significant reduction of the "fermionic sign problem," which takes place in standard path-integral Monte Carlo simulations of degenerate fermionic systems. We introduce three basic improvements. The first one is the improved treatment of exchange interaction, achieved by the proper change of variables in the path-integral measure. The second improvement is the inclusion of long-range Coulomb effects into an angle-averaged effective potential, as proposed by Yakub and Ronchi [J. Chem. Phys. 119, 11556 (2003)JCPSA60021-960610.1063/1.1624364]. The third improvement is the angle-averaging of an exchange determinant, describing the fermionic exchange interaction not only between particles in the main Monte Carlo cell, but also with electrons in the nearest periodic images. The FPIMC shows very good agreement with analytical data for ideal Fermi gas. For strongly coupled UEG under warm dense matter conditions we compare our total and exchange-correlation energy results with other Monte Carlo approaches.

Plasma flows encountered in high-energy-density experiments display features that differ from those of equilibrium systems. Nonequilibrium approaches such as kinetic theory (KT) capture many, if not all, of these phenomena. However, KT requires closure information, which can be computed from microscale simulations and communicated to KT. We present a concurrent heterogeneous multiscale approach that couples molecular dynamics (MD) with KT in the limit of near-equilibrium flows. To reduce the cost of gathering information from MD, we use active learning to train neural networks on MD data obtained by randomly sampling a small subset of the parameter space. We apply this method to a plasma interfacial mixing problem relevant to warm dense matter, showing considerable computational gains when compared with the full kinetic-MD approach. We find that our approach enables the probing of Coulomb coupling physics across a broad range of temperatures and densities that are inaccessible with current theoretical models.

Warm dense matter (WDM)---an extreme state with high temperatures and densities that occurs e.g. in astrophysical objects---constitutes one of the most active fields in plasma physics and materials science. These conditions can be realized in the lab by shock compression or laser excitation, and the most accurate experimental diagnostics is achieved with lasers and free electron lasers which is theoretically modeled using linear response theory. Here, we present first \textit{ab initio} path integral Monte Carlo results for the nonlinear density response of correlated electrons in WDM and show that for many situations of experimental relevance nonlinear effects cannot be neglected.

Finite-temperature density functional theory has become a standard tool for first-principles calculations of the properties of warm dense matter (WDM) relevant to high-energy-density physics (HEDP) applications. Here we present theoretical grounds of thermal hybrid exchange-correlation (XC) functionals within the generalized Mermin-Kohn-Sham scheme for an improved description of WDM. Building on the previously developed KSDT (Karasiev-Sjostrom-Dufty-Trickey) [Karasiev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 076403 (2014)] local density approximation (LDA) and the KDT16 (Karasiev-Dufty-Trickey 2016) [Karasiev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 076401 (2018)] generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) XC free-energy density functionals, we construct a novel thermal hybrid XC functional, referred to here as KDT0. The KDT0 model at low temperature reduces to the popular ground-state PBE0 hybrid due to properties of the used KDT16 density functional approximation. Application to static calculations of electronic band gap and band structure at a wide range of temperatures for various systems of interest to HEDP show that KDT0 provides a significant improvement to the lower LDA and GGA rung XC functionals and to the ground-state PBE0 hybrid.

The electron-ion relaxation dynamics in warm dense iron were investigated by time-resolved x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). A novel analysis, combining ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and two temperature model (TTM) simulations, was developed to calculate the x-ray absorption spectra as a function of delay time. Here we present experimental evidence of changes at the XAS L3 edge of iron that are consistent with the reduction of the electron-phonon coupling under warm dense matter conditions. The experimental results are in agreement with the model that takes both the electron (${T}_{e}$) and the ion temperature (${T}_{i}$) dependence of the thermophysical properties into consideration, while models where either constant electron-phonon coupling factor (G) or only ${T}_{e}$-dependent G are used do not agree with the observed relaxation dynamics of iron.

We present a new model of electron transport in warm and hot dense plasmas which combines the quantum Landau-Fokker-Planck equation with the concept of mean-force scattering. We obtain electrical and thermal conductivities across several orders of magnitude in temperature, from warm dense matter conditions to hot, nondegenerate plasma conditions, including the challenging crossover regime between the two. The small-angle approximation characteristic of Fokker-Planck collision theories is mitigated to good effect by the construction of accurate effective Coulomb logarithms based on mean-force scattering, which allows the theory to remain accurate even at low temperatures, as compared with high-fidelity quantum simulation results. Electron-electron collisions are treated on equal footing as electron-ion collisions. Their accurate treatment is found to be essential for hydrogen, and is expected to be important to other low-Z elements. We find that electron-electron scattering remains influential to the value of the thermal conductivity down to temperatures somewhat below the Fermi energy. The accuracy of the theory seems to falter only for the behavior of the thermal conductivity at very low temperatures due to a subtle interplay between the Pauli exclusion principle and the small-angle approximation as they pertain to electron-electron scattering. The effective one-component plasma (EOCP) model has provided an efficient approach to obtaining many important thermophysical parameters of hot dense matter [J. Cl\'erouin, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 115003 (2016)]. In this paper, we perform extensive quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations to determine the equations of state, ionic structures, and ionic transport properties of neon and krypton within the warm dense matter (WDM) regime where the density ( $\ensuremath{\rho}$ ) is up to 12 $\mathrm{g}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ and the temperature ($T$) is up to 100 kK. The simulated data are then used as a benchmark to explicitly evaluate the EOCP and Yukawa models. It is found that, within present $\ensuremath{\rho}$-T regime, the EOCP model can excellently reproduce the diffusion and viscosity coefficients of neon and krypton due to the fact that this model defines a system which nearly reproduces the actual physical states of WDM. Therefore, the EOCP model may be a promising alternative approach to reasonably predicting the transport behaviors of matter in WDM regime at lower QMD computational cost. The evaluation of Yukawa model shows that the consideration of the energy level broadening effect in the average atom model is necessary. Finally, with the help of EOCP model, the Stokes-Einstein relationships about neon and krypton are discussed, and fruitful plasma parameters as well as a practical $\ensuremath{\rho}$-T-dependent formula of the effective coupling parameter are obtained. These results not only provide valuable information for future theoretical and experimental studies on dense neon and krypton but also reveal the applicability of the EOCP model and the limitation of the Yukawa model in WDM regime and further support the continuing search for a unified description of ionic transport in dense plasma.

Author(s): Cytter, Y; Rabani, E; Neuhauser, D; Preising, M; Redmer, R; Baer, R | Abstract: The Kubo-Greenwood (KG) formula is often used in conjunction with Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) to compute the optical conductivity, particularly for warm dense matter. For applying the KG formula, all KS eigenstates and eigenvalues up to an energy cutoff are required and thus the approach becomes expensive, especially for high temperatures and large systems, scaling cubically with both system size and temperature. Here, we develop an approach to calculate the KS conductivity within the stochastic DFT framework, which requires knowledge only of the KS Hamiltonian but not its eigenstates and values. We show that the computational effort associated with the method scales linearly with system size and reduces in proportion to the temperature, unlike the cubic increase with traditional deterministic approaches. In addition, we find that the method allows an accurate description of the entire spectrum, including the high-frequency range, unlike the deterministic method which is compelled to introduce a high-frequency cutoff due to memory and computational time constraints. We apply the method to helium-hydrogen mixtures in the warm dense matter regime at temperatures of ∼60kK and find that the system displays two conductivity phases, where a transition from nonmetal to metal occurs when hydrogen atoms constitute ∼0.3 of the total atoms in the system.

We present the formulation, simulations, and results for multicomponent mutual diffusion coefficients in the warm, dense matter regime. While binary mixtures have received considerable attention for mass transport, far fewer studies have addressed ternary and more complex systems. We therefore explicitly examine ternary systems utilizing the Maxwell-Stefan formulation that relates diffusion to gradients in the chemical potential. Onsager coefficients then connect the macroscopic diffusion to microscopic particle motions, evinced in trajectories characterized by positions and velocities, through various autocorrelation functions (ACFs). These trajectories are generated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations either through the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which treats the ions classically and the electrons quantum-mechanically by an orbital-free density-functional theory, or through a classical MD approach with Yukawa pair-potentials, whose effective ionizations and electron screening length derive from quantal considerations. We employ the reference-mean form of the ACFs and determine the center-of-mass coefficients through a simple reference-frame-dependent similarity transformation. The Onsager terms in turn determine the mutual diffusion coefficients. We examine a representative sample of ternary mixtures as a function of density and temperature from those with only light elements (D-Li-C, D-Li-Al) to those with highly asymmetric mass components (D-Li-Cu, D-Li-Ag, H-C-Ag). We also follow trends in the diffusion as a function of number concentration and evaluated the efficacy of various approximations such as the Darken approximation.

Million-atom quantum simulations are in principle feasible with orbital-free density functional theory (OF-DFT) because the algorithms only require simple functional minimizations with respect to the electron density function. In this context, OF-DFT has been useful for simulations of warm dense matter, plasma, cold metals, and alloys. Unfortunately, systems as important as quantum dots and clusters (having highly inhomogeneous electron densities) still fall outside OF-DFT's range of applicability. In this Rapid Communication, we make considerable progress in addressing this century old problem by devising and implementing an accurate, transferable, and universal family of nonlocal noninteracting kinetic energy density functionals that feature correct asymptotics and can handle highly inhomogeneous electron densities. We show that OF-DFT achieves close to chemical accuracy for the electronic energy and reproduces the electron density to about 5% of the benchmark for semiconductor quantum dots and metal clusters. Therefore, this work shows that OF-DFT can reliably simulate systems with highly inhomogeneous electron density, such as clusters and quantum dots, with applicability to the rational design of materials.

In a recent Letter [T. Dornheim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 255001 (2018)] we have presented the first ab initio results for the dynamic structure factor $S(\mathbf{q},\omega)$ of the uniform electron gas for conditions ranging from the warm dense matter regime to the strongly correlated electron liquid. This was achieved on the basis of exact path integral Monte Carlo data by stochastically sampling the dynamic local field correction $G(\mathbf{q},\omega)$. In this paper, we introduce in detail this new reconstruction method and provide several practical demonstrations. Moreover, we thoroughly investigate the associated imaginary-time density--density correlation function $F(\mathbf{q},\tau)$. The latter also gives us access to the static density-response function $\chi(\mathbf{q})$ and static local field correction $G(\mathbf{q})$, which are compared to standard dielectric theories like the widespread random phase approximation. In addition, we study the high-frequency limit of $G(\mathbf{q},\omega)$ and provide extensive new results for the dynamic structure factor for different densities and temperatures. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for warm dense matter research and the interpretation of experiments.

Renewed interest in the homogeneous electron gas (HEG) has been stimulated by recent accurate simulations of it over a wide range of densities and temperatures. Those data, combined with known theoretical limits, have led to analytical representations of the free energy. Such a representation is, at least in principle, the complete HEG equation of state. The initial objective here is to establish that the two best representations [``corrKSDT,'' Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 076403 (2014), Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 076401 (2018), and ``GDB'' Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 135001 (2017)] of the simulation data and constraints are effectively the same in both functional form and accuracy of representation. The second objective is to disclose and delineate a significant difficulty. Despite their expected accuracy for the free energy, the underlying functional form is not adequate for derived thermodynamic properties. As an example, the specific heats obtained from the representations exhibit anomalies suggesting the need first for additional simulation data in critical regimes, then for refined fitting functions. The existing representations are, however, almost certainly adequate for applications based on the free energy alone (e.g., density-functional theory for warm dense matter). The third objective is to show that, despite their inability to provide a complete thermodynamic description of the HEG, the best analytical representations do provide a fully adequate exchange-correlation local density approximation for free-energy density-functional calculations.

X-ray Thomson scattering experiments in the soft and hard x-ray regime yield information on fundamental parameters of high-density systems. Pump-probe experiments with variable time delay provide insight into the excitation and relaxation dynamics in dense plasmas. On short time scales, a local thermodynamic equilibrium description might not be sufficient. Besides nonequilibrium effects on the electron distribution function, spatial inhomogeneities influence the scattering signal. Generalizing previous approaches of Belyi [Phys. Rev. E 97, 053204 (2018)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.97.053204] and Kozlowski et al. [Sci. Rep. 6, 24283 (2016)2045-232210.1038/srep24283], we discuss implications for Thomson scattering spectra for inhomogeneous plasmas in the warm dense matter regime based on a gradient expansion within real-time Green's-functions theory. Especially in the collective scattering regime, Thomson scattering spectra are modifed substantially by spatial inhomogeneities. Within a first-order gradient expansion, the dispersion relation for plasmons is determined. In particular, the ratio of the heights of the plasmon peaks is changed which prevents a simple estimation of the plasma temperature from the detailed balance relation.

Dharma-wardana et al. [M. W. C. Dharma-wardana et al., Phys. Rev. E 96, 053206 (2017)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.96.053206] recently calculated dynamic electrical conductivities for warm dense matter as well as for nonequilibrium two-temperature states termed "ultrafast matter" (UFM) [M. W. C. Dharma-wardana, Phys. Rev. E 93, 063205 (2016)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.93.063205]. In this Comment we present two evident reasons why these UFM calculations are neither suited to calculate dynamic conductivities nor x-ray Thomson scattering spectra in isochorically heated warm dense aluminum. First, the ion-ion structure factor, a major input into the conductivity and scattering spectra calculations, deviates strongly from that of isochorically heated aluminum. Second, the dynamic conductivity does not show a non-Drude behavior which is an essential prerequisite for a correct description of the absorption behavior in aluminum. Additionally, we clarify misinterpretations by Dharma-wardana et al. concerning the conductivity measurements of Gathers [G. R. Gathers, Int. J. Thermophys. 4, 209 (1983)IJTHDY0195-928X10.1007/BF00502353].

Electronic stopping power in warm dense matter can affect energy transport and heating in astrophysical processes and internal confinement fusion. For cold condensed matter systems, stopping power can be modeled from first-principles using real-time time-dependent density functional theory (DFT). However, high temperatures (10's to 100's of eV) may be computationally prohibitive for traditional Mermin-Kohn-Sham DFT. New experimental measurements in the warm dense regime motivates the development of first-principles approaches, which can reach these temperatures. We have developed a time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory, which includes a novel nonadiabatic and temperature-dependent kinetic energy density functional, for the simulation of stopping power at any temperature. The approach is nonlinear with respect to the projectile perturbation, includes all ions and electrons, and does not require a priori determination of screened interaction potentials. Our results compare favorably with Kohn-Sham for temperatures in the WDM regime, especially nearing 100 eV.

We present a new measurement of lattice disassembly times in femtosecond-laser-heated polycrystalline Au nanofoils. The results are compared with molecular dynamics simulations incorporating a highly optimized, embedded-atom-method interatomic potential. For absorbed energy densities of $0.9--4.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MJ}/\mathrm{kg}$, the agreement between the experiment and simulation reveals a single-crystal-like behavior of homogeneous melting and corroborates the applicability of the interatomic potential in the nonequilibrium warm dense matter regime. For energy densities below $0.9\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MJ}/\mathrm{kg}$, the measurement is consistent with nanocrystal behavior where melting is initiated at the grain boundaries.

In this Letter, we present one indirect-drive implosion experiment with a polystyrene sample that employs radiographic compression measurements over a range of shock pressures reaching up to 60 Mbar (6 TPa). This significantly exceeds previously published results obtained on the Nova laser [R. Cauble et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1248 (1998)] at a strongly improved precision, allowing us to discriminate between different EOS models. We find excellent agreement with Kohn-Sham density-functional-theory-based molecular dynamics simulations.

The spatiotemporal electron and ion relaxation dynamics of iron induced by femtosecond laser pulses was studied using a one-dimensional two-temperature model (1D-TTM) where electron and ion temperature-dependent thermophysical parameters such as specific heat ($C$), electron-phonon coupling ($G$), and thermal conductivity ($K$) were calculated with ab initio density-functional-theory (DFT) simulations. Based on the simulated time evolutions of electron and ion temperature distributions [${T}_{e}(x,t)$ and ${T}_{i}(x,t)$], the time evolution of x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) was calculated and compared with experimental results reported by Fernandez-Pa\~nella et al., where the slope of XANES spectrum at the onset of absorption ($s$) was used due to its excellent sensitivity to the electron temperature. Our results indicate that the ion temperature dependence on $G$ and $C$, which is largely neglected in the past studies, is very important for studying the nonequilibrium electron-ion relaxation dynamics of iron in warm dense matter (WDM) conditions. It is also shown that the $1/s$ behavior becomes very sensitive to the thermal gradient profile, in other words, to the values of $K$ in a TTM simulation, for target thickness of about two to four times the mean free path of conduction electrons. Our approach based on 1D-TTM and XANES simulations can be used to determine the optimal combination of target geometry and laser fluence for a given target material, which will enable us to tightly constrain the thermophysical parameters under electron-ion nonequilibrium WDM conditions.

Through the perturbation formula of time-dependent density functional theory broadly employed in the calculation of solids, we provide a first-principles calculation of x-ray Thomson scattering spectrum of isochorically heated aluminum foil, as considered in the experiments of Sperling et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 115001 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.115.115001], where ions were constrained near their lattice positions. From the calculated spectra, we find that the electronic temperature cannot exceed 2 eV, much smaller than the previous estimation of 6 eV via the detailed balance relation. Our results may well be an indication of unique electronic properties of warm dense matter, which can be further illustrated by future experiments. The lower electronic temperature predicted partially relieves the concern on the heating of x-ray free electron laser to the sample when used in structure measurement.

We investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, how the spectral distribution of laser accelerated carbon ions can be filtered by charge exchange processes in a double foil target setup. Carbon ions at multiple charge states with an initially wide kinetic energy spectrum, from 0.1 to 18 MeV, were detected with a remarkably narrow spectral bandwidth after they had passed through an ultrathin and partially ionized foil. With our theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that this process is a consequence of the evolution of the carbon ion charge states in the second foil. We calculated the resulting spectral distribution separately for each ion species by solving the rate equations for electron loss and capture processes within a collisional radiative model. We determine how the efficiency of charge transfer processes can be manipulated by controlling the ionization degree of the transfer matter.

Multiple shock reverberation compression experiments are designed and performed to determine the equation of state of neon ranging from the initial dense gas up to the warm dense regime where the pressure is from about 40 MPa to 120 GPa and the temperature is from about 297 K up to above 20 000 K. The wide region experimental data are used to evaluate the available theoretical models. It is found that, for neon below $1.1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{g}/\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$, within the framework of density functional theory molecular dynamics, a van der Waals correction is meaningful. Under high pressure and temperature, results from the self-consistent fluid variational theory model are sensitive to the potential parameter and could give successful predictions in the whole experimental regime if a set of proper parameters is employed. The new observations on neon under megabar ($1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Mbar}={10}^{11}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Pa}$) pressure and eV temperature ($1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}\ensuremath{\approx}{10}^{4}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$) enrich the understanding on properties of warm dense matter and have potential applications in revealing the formation and evolution of gaseous giants or mega-Earths.

We present a quantum theory for the dynamic structure factors in nonequilibrium, correlated, two-component systems such as plasmas or warm dense matter. The polarization function, which is needed as the input for the calculation of the structure factors, is calculated in nonequilibrium based on a perturbation expansion in the interaction strength. To make our theory applicable for x-ray scattering, a generalized Chihara decomposition for the total electron structure factor in nonequilibrium is derived. Examples are given and the influence of correlations and exchange on the structure and the x-ray-scattering spectrum are discussed for a model nonequilibrium distribution, as often encountered during laser heating of materials, as well as for two-temperature systems.

The extremely high power densities and short durations of single pulses of x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have opened new opportunities in atomic physics, where complex excitation-relaxation chains allow for high ionization states in atomic and molecular systems, and in dense plasma physics, where XFEL heating of solid-density targets can create unique dense states of matter having temperatures on the order of the Fermi energy. We focus here on the latter phenomena, with special emphasis on the problem of optimum target design to achieve high x-ray heating into the warm dense matter (WDM) state. We report fully three-dimensional simulations of the incident x-ray pulse and the resulting multielectron relaxation cascade to model the spatial energy density deposition in multicomponent targets, with particular focus on the effects of nonlocal heat transport due to the motion of high energy photoelectrons and Auger electrons. We find that nanoscale high-Z/low-Z multicomponent targets can give much improved energy density deposition in lower-Z materials, with enhancements reaching a factor of 100. This has three important benefits. First, it greatly enlarges the thermodynamic parameter space in XFEL x-ray heating studies of lower-Z materials. Second, it allows the use of higher probe photon energies, enabling higher-information content X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements such as in two-color XFEL operations. Third, while this is merely one step toward optimization of x-ray heating target design, the demonstration of the importance of nonlocal heat transport establishes important common ground between XFEL-based x-ray heating studies and more traditional laser plasma methods.

We have extended a recently developed multispecies, multitemperature Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model [Haack et al., J. Stat. Phys. 168, 822 (2017)JSTPBS0022-471510.1007/s10955-017-1824-9], to include multiphysics capabilities that enable modeling of a wider range of physical conditions. In terms of geometry, we have extended from the spatially homogeneous setting to one spatial dimension. In terms of the physics, we have included an atomic ionization model, accurate collision physics across coupling regimes, self-consistent electric fields, and degeneracy in the electronic screening. We apply the model to a warm dense matter scenario in which the ablator-fuel interface of an inertial confinement fusion target is heated, but for larger length and time scales and for much higher temperatures than can be simulated using molecular dynamics. Relative to molecular dynamics, the kinetic model greatly extends the temperature regime and the spatiotemporal scales over which we are able to model. In our numerical results we observe hydrogen from the ablator material jetting into the fuel during the early stages of the implosion and compare the relative size of various diffusion components (Fickean diffusion, electrodiffusion, and barodiffusion) that drive this process. We also examine kinetic effects, such as anisotropic distributions and velocity separation, in order to determine when this problem can be described with a hydrodynamic model.

In a recent Letter [T.~Dornheim \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{117}, 156403 (2016)], we presented the first \textit{ab initio} quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results of the warm dense electron gas in the thermodynamic limit. However, a complete parametrization of the exchange-correlation free energy with respect to density, temperature, and spin polarization remained out of reach due to the absence of (i) accurate QMC results below $\theta=k_\text{B}T/E_\text{F}=0.5$ and (ii) of QMC results for spin polarizations different from the paramagnetic case. Here we overcome both remaining limitations. By closing the gap to the ground state and by performing extensive QMC simulations for different spin polarizations, we are able to obtain the first complete \textit{ab initio} exchange-correlation free energy functional; the accuracy achieved is an unprecedented $\sim 0.3\%$. This also allows us to quantify the accuracy and systematic errors of various previous approximate functionals.

Multiple reverberation compression can achieve higher pressure, higher temperature, but lower entropy. It is available to provide an important validation for the elaborate and wider planetary models and simulate the inertial confinement fusion capsule implosion process. In the work, we have developed the thermodynamic and optical properties of helium from shock-adiabatic to quasi-isentropic compression by means of a multiple reverberation technique. By this technique, the initial dense gaseous helium was compressed to high pressure and high temperature and entered the warm dense matter (WDM) region. The experimental equation of state (EOS) of WDM helium in the pressure-density-temperature (P-$\ensuremath{\rho}$-T) range of $1--150\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$, $0.1--1.1\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{g}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, and 4600--24 000 K were measured. The optical radiations emanating from the WDM helium were recorded, and the particle velocity profiles detecting from the sample/window interface were obtained successfully up to 10 times compression. The optical radiation results imply that dense He has become rather opaque after the 2nd compression with a density of about $0.3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{g}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ and a temperature of about 1 eV. The opaque states of helium under multiple compression were analyzed by the particle velocity measurements. The multiple compression technique could efficiently enhanced the density and the compressibility, and our multiple compression ratios $({\ensuremath{\eta}}_{i}={\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i}/{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0},\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}i=1--10)$ of helium are greatly improved from 3.5 to 43 based on initial precompressed density $({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0})$. For the relative compression ratio $({\ensuremath{\eta}}_{i}^{\ensuremath{'}}={\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i}/{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i\ensuremath{-}1})$, it increases with pressure in the lower density regime and reversely decreases in the higher density regime, and a turning point occurs at the 3rd and 4th compression states under the different loading conditions. This nonmonotonic evolution of the compression is controlled by two factors, where the excitation of internal degrees of freedom results in the increasing compressibility and the repulsive interactions between the particles results in the decreasing compressibility at the onset of electron excitation and ionization. In the P-$\ensuremath{\rho}$-T contour with the experiments and the calculations, our multiple compression states from insulating to semiconducting fluid (from transparent to opaque fluid) are illustrated. Our results give an elaborate validation of EOS models and have applications for planetary and stellar opaque atmospheres.

Transport properties of mixtures of elements in the dense plasma regime play an important role in natural astrophysical and experimental systems, e.g., inertial confinement fusion. We present a series of orbital-free molecular dynamics simulations on dense plasma mixtures with comparison to a global pseudo ion in jellium model. Hydrogen is mixed with elements of increasingly high atomic number (lithium, carbon, aluminum, copper, and silver) at a fixed temperature of 100 eV and constant pressure set by pure hydrogen at 2g/cm^{3}, namely, 370 Mbars. We compute ionic transport coefficients, such as self-diffusion, mutual diffusion, and viscosity for various concentrations. Small concentrations of the heavy atoms significantly change the density of the plasma and decrease the transport coefficients. The structure of the mixture evidences a strong Coulomb coupling between heavy ions and the appearance of a broad correlation peak at short distances between hydrogen atoms. The concept of an effective one component plasma is used to quantify the overcorrelation of the light element induced by the admixture of a heavy element.

We perform first-principles path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) and density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) calculations to explore warm dense matter states of LiF. Our simulations cover a wide density-temperature range of $2.08-15.70$~g$\,$cm$^{-3}$ and $10^4-10^9$~K. Since PIMC and DFT-MD accurately treat effects of atomic shell structure, we find a pronounced compression maximum and a shoulder on the principal Hugoniot curve attributed to K-shell and L-shell ionization. The results provide a benchmark for widely-used EOS tables, such as SESAME, LEOS, and models. In addition, we compute pair-correlation functions that reveal an evolving plasma structure and ionization process that is driven by thermal and pressure ionization. Finally, we compute electronic density of states of liquid LiF from DFT-MD simulations and find that the electronic gap can remain open with increasing density and temperature to at least 15.7 g$~$cm$^{-3}$.

We present molecular dynamics simulations based on finite-temperature density functional theory that determine self-consistently the dynamic ion structure factor and the electronic form factor in lithium. Our comprehensive data set allows for the calculation of the dispersion relation for collective excitations, the calculation of the sound velocity, and the determination of the ion feature from the total electronic form factor and the ion structure factor. The results are compared with available experimental x-ray and neutron scattering data. Good agreement is found for both the liquid metal and warm dense matter domain. Finally, we study the impact of possible target inhomogeneities on x-ray scattering spectra.

We show that the Bayesian inference of recently measured x-ray diffraction spectra from laser-shocked aluminum [L. B. Fletcher et al., Nat. Photon. 9, 274 (2015)10.1038/nphoton.2015.41] with the one-component-plasma (OCP) model performs remarkably well at estimating the ionic density and temperature. This statistical approach requires many evaluations of the OCP static structure factor, which were done using a recently derived analytic fit. The atomic form factor is approximated by an exponential function in the diffraction window of the first peak. The electronic temperature is then estimated from a comparison of this approximated form factor with the electronic structure of an average atom model. Out-of-equilibrium states, with electrons hotter than ions, are diagnosed for the spectra obtained early after the pump, whereas at a late time delay the plasma is at thermal equilibrium. Apart from the present findings, this OCP-based modeling of warm dense matter has an important role to play in the interpretation of x-ray Thomson scattering measurements currently performed at large laser facilities.

High resolution inelastic x-ray scattering experiments are widely used to study the electronic and chemical properties of materials under a range of conditions, from ambient temperature to the warm dense matter regime. We use the real-space multiple scattering (RSMS) Green's function formalism coupled with density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) to study thermal effects on the Compton profile (CP) of disordered systems. The RSMS method is advantageous for calculations of highly disordered, aperiodic systems because it places no restriction on symmetry. As a test, we apply our approach to thermally disordered Be, Li, and Si in both liquid and solid phases. We find good agreement with experimental and other theoretical results, showing that the real-space multiple scattering approach coupled with DFT-MD is an efficient and reliable method for calculating the CP of disordered systems at finite temperatures.

The effects of an explicit temperature dependence in the exchange correlation (XC) free-energy functional upon calculated properties of matter in the warm dense regime are investigated. The comparison is between the Karasiev-Sjostrom-Dufty-Trickey (KSDT) finite-temperature local-density approximation (TLDA) XC functional [Karasiev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 076403 (2014)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.112.076403] parametrized from restricted path-integral Monte Carlo data on the homogeneous electron gas (HEG) and the conventional Monte Carlo parametrization ground-state LDA XC [Perdew-Zunger (PZ)] functional evaluated with T-dependent densities. Both Kohn-Sham (KS) and orbital-free density-functional theories are used, depending upon computational resource demands. Compared to the PZ functional, the KSDT functional generally lowers the dc electrical conductivity of low-density Al, yielding improved agreement with experiment. The greatest lowering is about 15% for T=15 kK. Correspondingly, the KS band structure of low-density fcc Al from the KSDT functional exhibits a clear increase in interband separation above the Fermi level compared to the PZ bands. In some density-temperature regimes, the deuterium equations of state obtained from the two XC functionals exhibit pressure differences as large as 4% and a 6% range of differences. However, the hydrogen principal Hugoniot is insensitive to the explicit XC T dependence because of cancellation between the energy and pressure-volume work difference terms in the Rankine-Hugoniot equation. Finally, the temperature at which the HEG becomes unstable is T≥7200 K for the T-dependent XC, a result that the ground-state XC underestimates by about 1000 K.

We explore the effect that equation of state (EOS) thermodynamics has on shock-driven cavity-collapse processes. We account for full, multidimensional, unsteady hydrodynamics and incorporate a range of relevant EOSs (polytropic, QEOS-type, and SESAME). In doing so, we show that simplified analytic EOSs, like ideal gas, capture certain critical parameters of the collapse such as velocity of the main transverse jet and pressure at jet strike, while also providing a good representation of overall trends. However, more sophisticated EOSs yield different and more relevant estimates of temperature and density, especially for higher incident shock strengths. We model incident shocks ranging from 0.1 to 1000 GPa, the latter being of interest in investigating the warm dense matter regime for which experimental and theoretical EOS data are difficult to obtain. At certain shock strengths, there is a factor of two difference in predicted density between QEOS-type and SESAME EOS, indicating cavity collapse as an experimental method for exploring EOS in this range.

The femtosecond scale of intense x-ray pulses from x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) is now well established as being able to create interesting states of matter characterized by long-lived non-equilibrium semicore or core electron occupancies or by the heating of dense phases via the relaxation cascade initiated by the photoelectric effect. We address here the latter case of so-called ‘warm dense matter’ (WDM) and seek to better understand how experiments can be best designed to investigate the consequences of electronic heating in tepid WDM states of crystalline phases where the lattice degrees of freedom have insufficient time to respond. We report temperature-dependent density functional theory calculations for the x-ray diffraction from perfectly crystalline LiF, graphite, diamond, and Be. We find strong signatures of condensed-phase effects that are testable by experiment and that emphasize the importance of wide-angle scattering, i.e., that requires the use of high energy x-rays to obtain the Bragg intensities for a wide range of momentum transfers.

Solid, liquid, and gaseous states of matter can exist and acquire unique properties when reduced in size into a nanometer domain. This Colloquium explores the approaches to produce plasmas with nanometer dimensions and the arising physical phenomena and properties associated with this extreme, nonequilibrium state of matter. Analysis of the spatial confinement, coupling, ideality, and degeneracy criteria lead to the possibilities to produce transient nanoplasma states near, in, and from solids by using ultrafast photoexcitation. These states arise through the interplay of nonequilibrium, many-body Coulomb interactions, thermal, and nonthermal effects. Examples include photoexcited electron-hole plasmas in semiconductors, transient solid-to-plasma states including warm dense matter, nanoplasmas produced by interaction of nanoclusters and nanoparticles with intense radiation, nanoplasmas in high-energy ion tracks within solids, nanoplasmas in relativistic regime, and others. Physical phenomena arising due to the localization of high-energy densities to microscales and nanoscales and their potential applications are discussed.

Accurate x-ray scattering techniques to measure the physical properties of dense plasmas have been developed for applications in high energy density physics. This class of experiments produces short-lived hot dense states of matter with electron densities in the range of solid density and higher where powerful penetrating x-ray sources have become available for probing. Experiments have employed laser-based x-ray sources that provide sufficient photon numbers in narrow bandwidth spectral lines, allowing spectrally resolved x-ray scattering measurements from these plasmas. The backscattering spectrum accesses the noncollective Compton scattering regime which provides accurate diagnostic information on the temperature, density, and ionization state. The forward scattering spectrum has been shown to measure the collective plasmon oscillations. Besides extracting the standard plasma parameters, density and temperature, forward scattering yields new observables such as a direct measure of collisions and quantum effects. Dense matter theory relates scattering spectra with the dielectric function and structure factors that determine the physical properties of matter. Applications to radiation-heated and shock-compressed matter have demonstrated accurate measurements of compression and heating with up to picosecond temporal resolution. The ongoing development of suitable x-ray sources and facilities will enable experiments in a wide range of research areas including inertial confinement fusion,more » radiation hydrodynamics, material science, or laboratory astrophysics.« less
