Abstract

The effect of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 on leukocyte activity in the airway was investigated. Female wild-type mice were used as experimental models to determine the phenotypic characteristics of ICAM-1 and its role in lung physiology. Results indicated that inhalation of ovalbumin by sensitized mice caused a leukocytic infiltration around blood vessels in the lung tissue. The accumulation of eosinophils and lymphocytes in the airway was also attenuated in ICAM-1-deficient mice with allergic pulmonary inflammation.

Abstract

Murine models of ovalbumin (OA)-induced pulmonary inflammation were utilized to role of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and alpha4-integrins expression in the leukocyte trafficking. Analysis of the airways of mice with OA-induced inflammation indicated the presence of OA-induce elevation of VCAM-1 expression in the murine pulmonary vascular tissue. Furthermore, inhibition of VCAM-1 and alpha4-integrin expression reduced the accumulation of eosinophils and lymphocytes.

Abstract

Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 is an important molecule in the development of ovalbumin antigen-induced lung inflammation in rats. Due to the induction of ovalbumin, influx of lymphocyte and eosinophil-rich inflammatory cells occurs in the respiratory tract. Anti-intercellular adhesion molecule-1 monoclonal antibody stops the antigen-induced recruitment of eosinophils and lymphocytes into the airway lumen.
