SnO2 hollow nanospheres were prepared by loading Sn4+ on the surface of carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres used as template. Carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres were synthesized from glucose solution by hydrothermal method at 180 degrees C for 10 h. The surface morphology of SnO2 hollow nanospheres were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy. During the synthesis process, different concentrations of phosphoric acid were added into the solution. The mechanical strength and gas response to H-2 of the SnO2 hollow nanospheres with or without adding phosphoric acid were investigated. It was founded that not only the gas response but also the mechanical strength could be improved through adding proper amount of phosphoric acid. At the same time, the resistance of the SnO2 hollow nanospheres with phosphoric acid was much lower than the ones without phosphoric acid. The values of specific area of the as-prepared samples were also improved greatly through adding phosphoric acid. Such phenomena were discussed in the paper in details.
