Qualitative differences between immigrants of the past relative to their contemporary counterparts contribute to changes in the nature of the relationship between immigration and crime in America. While an overwhelming amount of existing criminological and sociological literature has emphasized the relationship between the effects of immigration with rates of criminal offending, noticeably less scholarly attention has been paid to contemporary immigrants and the different contexts under which they encounter criminal victimization. This research examines the roles in which immigrant networks play in the relationship between immigration and victimization and specifically looks at (1) whether such networks can serve as buffers against criminal victimization, and (2) do such buffers have different effects for different immigrant groups.
