Carnivorous mammals are a trophic guild with an important role in the dissemination of parasite infective stages (larvae, eggs, cysts, and oocysts). In the present study, new samples of coprolites attributed to carnivorous mammals, obtained from 2 archaeological caves, were analyzed for the presence of parasites with the aim to increase the knowledge about parasites in rockshelters that could have spread to humans and other mammals. To this purpose, fragments of 3 coprolites from Cerro Casa de Piedra, cave 5 and cave 7, were examined. Coprolites were rehydrated in aqueous trisodium phosphate and processed by spontaneous sedimentation. High parasite richness was observed and new parasite species for archaeological contexts were found. The parasitological findings in Puma concolor coprolites associated with caves suggest the importance of these carnivores in the dissemination of parasites in areas with high re-use of space and steady conditions of temperature, humidity, and radiation.

Tapeworm eggs from the genus Taenia sp. were identified during the study of mummy remains dated to 2,286 ± 28 BP from the Chehrabad salt mine in northwestern Iran. The presence of tapeworm in this salt mine provides paleopathological information. Moreover, it brings new information on ancient diet, indicating the consumption of raw or undercooked meat. Cultural aspects as well as archaeozoological data are discussed in order to try to detail meat consumption. Paleoparasitological data are rare in the Middle East, and this case study presents the first recovery of parasites in ancient Iran. It constitutes the earliest evidence of ancient intestinal parasites in this country and contributes to the knowledge of gastrointestinal pathogens in the Near East.

For the first time in the study of ancient parasites, analyses were carried out on samples taken from a First World War settlement in France (Geispolsheim, region of Alsace). Microscopic examination of sediment samples revealed the presence of 3 common human parasites, i.e., Trichuris trichiura , Ascaris lumbricoides , and Taenia sp. A review of paleoparasitological studies in Europe shows that these 3 parasites have infected humanity for centuries. Despite this recurrence, literature shows that knowledge regarding many helminths was limited, and their life cycles were only relatively recently elucidated. Finally, the present study provides additional information about the health of the German soldiers and the sanitary conditions in the trenches during the first modern world conflict.

For the first time, a palaeoparasitological study was performed on 12 mummies from a Christian cemetery excavated in El-Deir, Oasis of Kharga, Egypt. The analysis revealed the presence of a tapeworm, probably Taenia sp., in a single individual. The presence of just the presumed taeniid egg is surprising and raises the question of the relationship between residents of Egyptian oases and those residing in the Nile Valley. The result suggests information on the health status of the ancient oasis population and re-enforces a hypothesis regarding possible social stratification of the inhabitants. The work must be continued if we are to acquire additional knowledge dealing with life in ancient Egyptian oases.

The distribution of single cysticerci between cerebral hemispheres was studied in 227 adult cases of calcified and vesicular neurocysticercosis (NC). A rightward lateralization of calcified cysticerci was significant only in women, whereas vesicular cysticerci were equally distributed in both hemispheres. Factors related with the differences in the inflammatory response and in the regional cerebral blood flow between genders could be involved.

Coenuriasis is a parasitic disease induced by larval taeniid tapeworms that is rarely observed in humans. In December 2005, a case was diagnosed in Nancy, France, after surgical excision of a cyst on a 24-yr-old woman returning from the Côte d'Ivoire. Morphological and epidemiological criteria suggested that the infection was due to Taenia serialis. Molecular analysis of NADH dehydrogenase subunit I (NDI) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences was also in favor of T. serialis identification, but the absence of available genetic data on T. brauni and T. glomeratus and the small number of published sequences for T. serialis and T. multiceps must be considered with caution. The NDI partial sequences presented more variations within species of Taenia than the COI sequences, which make them more useful targets for species identification and analysis of intraspecific polymorphisms. The present study points to the usefulness of molecular biology tools to help make up for the shortcomings of the commonplace parasitological diagnosis for coenuriasis.

Multiple analysis has characterized a recently described tapeworm of people, Taenia asiatica, in mainland China. Six adult tapeworms collected from people of the Zhuang minority residing in the southern part of China (Luzhai isolate) were comparatively analyzed with other tapeworms from people: T. asiatica (n = 2, South Korea), T. saginata (n = 1, Poland; n = 1, Korea), and T. solium (n = 1, People's Republic of China). Experimental infections with eggs from the Luzhai isolate in pigs and cattle produced cysticerci, each with a hookletless scolex and with wartlike formations on the external surface of the bladder wall. There were rostellar protrusions in the scolices of adult worms. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis using 3 arbitrary primers produced bands identical to those of the Korean T. asiatica. Conversely, T. saginata and T. solium exhibited different banding patterns. Phylogenetic relationships inferred from the complete nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer 2 placed the Chinese tapeworms consistently within the T. asiatica clade by 96% bootstrapping value in the maximum likelihood analysis, 96% in maximum parsimony, and 100% in neighbor joining. These collective data demonstrate that T. asiatica is sympatrically distributed with the other 2 species of Taenia in the human host in mainland China.

Various mammals were evaluated as experimental models of adult Taenia solium. Suppressed and nonsuppressed hosts were used as experimental models. Infections were performed per os with cysticerci obtained from pigs; immunosuppression was induced with methyl prednisolone acetate at intervals of 10-14 days after infection. Tapeworms developed in hamsters, gerbils, and chinchillas but failed to develop in rabbits, cats, pigs, and rhesus monkeys. In infectable animals, treatment with the steroid facilitated maintenance and development of the parasite, and more tapeworms were obtained. Mature and some pregravid proglottids were recovered from hamsters and gerbils, whereas a gravid T. solium was obtained from a chinchilla at 12 wk postinfection. Eggs recovered from the chinchilla transformed into cysticerci in a pig 12 wk after oral infection. The T. solium-chinchilla experimental system seems to be an alternative definitive host for this parasite and thus the basis for a great diversity of studies.

Between May 1989 and October 1991, 544 black bears Ursus americanus were collected in New Brunswick and examined for Trichinella spiralis larvae. In addition, 110 of these bears were examined for filarial nematodes, and the entire intestinal tracts of 12 bears were examined for intestinal helminths. Four species of helminths were identified from these bears, including Trichinella spiralis, Dirofilaria ursi, Baylisascaris transfuga, and Taenia krabbei. This represents the first documentation of T. spiralis in Maritime Canada and extends eastward the range of T. krabbei.

Strobilocerci of Taenia taeniaeformis were obtained from laboratory rats 90 days after experimental infection. Cyst fluid, whole parasite homogenate, and rat serum each were fractionated by SDS-PAGE, immobilized on nitrocellulose by western blot, and probed with conjugated goat anti-rat IgG. Reactive bands with relative mobilities corresponding to rat IgG were found in all 3 samples. Additional bands in cyst fluid and parasite homogenate may represent enzymatic degradation of IgG. The pattern of reactive bands in the homogenate discounts the nonspecific adsorption of host molecules onto the tegument and suggests selective incorporation of serum proteins. The presence of an IgG-like molecule of atypical molecular weight is consistent with either molecular mimicry or enzymatic cleavage of IgG bound to the tegument. The relevance of serum protein utilization by the parasite to evasion of the host immune response is discussed.

Three species of cestodes recovered from tree shrews, Tupaia glis, were identified as Sparganum sp., Hymenolepis diminuta, and Tupaiataenia quentini gen. et sp. n. The new genus is differentiated from Mathevotaenia, Markewitchitaenia and Atriotaenia by being craspedote, possessing a large seminal receptacle, the presence of a hermaphroditic canal leading into the genital atrium, and by having two opposable, muscular lappets on the anterior margin of each sucker.
