This paper focuses on the selection and adaptation-effects of values in reference to the choices young women make between alternative living arrangements. We go beyond the mere association of value-dimensions and living arrangement by using panel data of the 'Familienentwicklung in Nordrhein-Westfalen' study. We argue that values are non redundant cultural characteristics that influence young people's choices (selection-effect of values) and that choices have a recursive effect on values people stress (adaptation-effect). The analyses clearly illustrate the complexity of these processes. Traditional family orientation measured prior to the choices people make, affects these choices. Marriage seems to reinforce this traditional orientation. On the other hand, the importance of independence through work and financial security, is reevaluated after union-formation, marked by a clear drop in the importance stressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
