Archaeological Research Services, Inc. (ARS) performed a Class m (Intensive Field Inventory) cultural resources (archaeological) survey within a 300-to-600 ft wide corridor through both previously surveyed and unsurveyed Tonto National Forest (TNF), Tonto National Monument administered by the National Park Service (NPS), Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), and private land for the proposed upgrade of State Route 88 (SR 88) between Roosevelt and Claypool, Gila County, Arizona (ADOT Project No. F-038-1-308 [PE]; TRACS #088 GI 245 H2726 0lD). The survey was conducted at the request of RUST Environment and Infrastructure Inc. of Phoenix (RUST E&I Project No. 17618), and was performed under the conditions and authority of U.S. Tonto National Forest Special-Use Permit No. 2025-16. Between April 15 and June 14, 1993, Archaeological Research Services, Inc. performed a cultural resources survey of State Route 88 (the Apache Trail). The right-of-way varies from 66 to 200 feet, but construction as-builts were not available. Therefore, the Arizona Department of Transportation requested that a 200 foot wide right-of-way be surveyed for the entire project length unless clearly marked property boundaries or other right-of-way indications were present. The 17.5 mile long survey corridor crosses lands owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation, and sections of Arizona Department of Transportation right-of-way across Bureau of Land Management lands. That segment of State Route 88 on Tonto National Forest lands was constructed through the provisions of a Special Use Permit issued to the Arizona Department of Transportation by Tonto National Forest. The survey was conducted under the conditions and authority of a Tonto National Forest special use permit issued to Archaeological Research Services, Inc. on 2/17/93, Arizona State Museum general permit number 93-11, and Bureau of Land Management permit number AZ-000054 issued 10/13/90 (fieldwork authorization number PDO-93-5, 3/23/93). The project area encompasses approximately 424.24 acres, of which approximately, 371.21 were actually surveyed when the existing paved surface of State Route 88 is excluded. The Arizona Department of Transportation requested the survey (Arizona Department of Transportation Project No. STP-952-4(1), Tracs PN 195 H3275 01C) in anticipation of a proposed pavement preservation project. Archaeological Research Services performed a Class III (Intensive Field Inventory) survey in order to locate and record any cultural resources that could be disturbed as a result of the proposed undertaking. This study provides descriptions and National Register eligibility evaluations for cultural resources encountered during the survey. As a result of the survey, 22 archaeological sites (4 previously recorded, 18 newly recorded) and 49 isolated artifact occurrences or cultural features were recorded (or rerecorded or relocated). This is the second revision of this document, with earlier versions completed 29 June 1993 and 15 November 1994.

On July 28, 1982, Lyle M. Stone of Archaeological Research Services, Inc. performed an archaeological survey of a 2.3 mile by 100 ft wide right-of-way for a proposed 22 kV distribution line on the Tonto National Forest near Punkin Center, Gila Country, Arizona. The proposed Salt River Project distribution line will serve an AT&T relay station in the vicinity of Four Peaks. This survey was requested by Salt River Project in order to determine if important cultural resources (prehistoric or historic archaeological sites, historically or architecturally significant structures or buildings) were located within the project area which might be affected by the proposed distribution line construction. The proposed line will be constructed along an existing telephone line alignment. This survey was performed under the conditions and authority of a Special Use Permit issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, to Archaeological Research Services, Inc. in October 1981. Accordingly, the appropriate Forest Supervisor and District Ranger were notified in writing in advance of the survey. This file includes an early report on the area resources by Mary Raring-Hart, a special use application, schematic drawings, and numerous pieces of correspondence among the U. S. Forest Service, Salt River Project, Lyle M. Stone, and Arizona State University.

On August 28, 1985, Lyle M. Stone and Douglas R. Mitchell of Archaeological Research Services, Inc. performed an archaeological survey at the proposed locations of four small materials sources located near the historic Power Canal on Roosevelt Lake, Gila County, Arizona. It has been proposed by Salt River Project that borrow materials (silt, sand and gravel, soil) from each of these sources be used to cover four individual structural features on the Power Canal which are in disrepair and may be considered hazards to the general public. The purpose of this survey, requested by Salt River Project, was to determine if important cultural resources were located at the proposed materials source locations which would be adversely affected by materials removal and hauling. The four proposed materials sources are located on U.S. Forest Service, Tonto National Forest lands within the Tonto Basin Ranger District.

During December, 1982, and January, 1983, representatives of the Environmental Services and Civil Engineering Departments of Salt River Project consulted with Archaeological Research Services, Inc. regarding the status of archaeological and historical information pertaining to the Roosevelt Power Canal, an early 20th century structure located in the Roosevelt Lake vicinity. Archaeological Research Services, Inc. had developed recent information on the Power Canal due to its participation in the Central Arizona Water Control Study; a central Arizona flood control and regulatory water storage study sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers. As a part of this study a number of canal features or components (for example, siphons, bridges, culverts), were field-inventoried and evaluated in terms of National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria. Archaeological Research Services, Inc. concluded that the Power Canal was an integral part of a proposed Roosevelt Archaeological and Historic National Register District. Documentation supporting this conclusion, in the form of a National Register of Historic Places nomination, was prepared and submitted by Archaeological Research Services, Inc. to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Roosevelt Dam, with which the Power Canal is associated, is itself a National Historic Landmark, as well as a National Register of Historic Places property.
