Abstract

A laser exhibits both controllable gain and loss and, under proper design conditions, is an ideal non-Hermitian system allowing the direct observation and engineering of spectral singularities such as exceptional points (EPs). A dual section distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a prototype of such a system, allowing the controlled coupling of a ladder of cavity Fabry-Perot modes to a quarter wave shifted DFB mode. Tuning the coupling strength and the gain difference between these two set of modes enables probing the regimes from weak coupling to strong coupling and the robust observation of EP singularities. At these EPs, the laser exhibits a sequence of lasing and switching off the coherent emission when pumped above transparency. Additionally, the pumping scheme allows the deliberate lifting of the EP degeneracy. These results show that dual section QCL is a perfect platform to study EPs because the coupling parameter and system loss can be tuned in a single device., New Journal of Physics, 24 (5), ISSN:1367-2630

Abstract

While optical fibers display excellent performances in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet ranges remain poorly addressed by them. Obtaining better fibers for the short-wavelength range has been restricted, in all fiber optics, by scattering processes. In hollow-core fibers, the scattering loss arises from the core roughness and represents the limiting factor in reducing their loss regardless of the fiber cladding confinement power. To attain fibers performing at short wavelengths, it is paramount developing means to minimize the height variations on the fiber microstructure boundaries. Here, we report on the reduction of the core surface roughness of hollow-core fibers by modifying their fabrication technique. In the novel process proposed herein, counter directional gas fluxes are applied within the fiber holes during fabrication to attain an increased shear rate on its microstructure. The effect of the process on the surface roughness has been quantified by optical profilometry and the results showed that the root-mean-square surface roughness has been reduced from 0.40 nm to 0.15 nm. The improvement in the fiber core surface quality entailed fibers with ultralow loss in the short-wavelength range. We report on fibers with record loss values as low as 50 dB/km at 290 nm, 9.7 dB/km at 369 nm, 5.0 dB/km at 480 nm, and 1.8 dB/km at 719 nm. The results reveal this new approach as a promising path for the development of hollow-core fibers guiding at short wavelengths with loss that can potentially be orders of magnitude lower than the ones achievable with their silica-core counterparts.

Abstract

Relying on Feynman-Kac path-integral methodology, we present a new statistical perspective on wave single-scattering by complex three-dimensional objects. The approach is implemented on three models -- Schiff approximation, Born approximation and rigorous Born series -- and usual interpretative difficulties such as the analysis of moments over scatterer distributions (size, orientation, shape...) are addressed. In terms of computational contribution, we show that commonly recognized features of Monte Carlo method with respect to geometric complexity can now be available when solving electromagnetic scattering.

Abstract

Fiber-optic transmission of high radiofrequency (RF) signals is being established as a key means for efficiently dealing with the ever-demanding bandwidth, services and cost requirements of modern broadband wireless networks and systems. Implementation of this technology critically relies on the capability of processing RF signals in the optical layer. A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) which incorporates semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is an attractive scheme for executing all-optically the important task of RF signal frequency transposition via mixing function. In this paper we present the progress and main outcomes obtained so far on the work carried-out to achieve this goal under collaborative project ‘Choraal’. In this context we characterize, evaluate, demonstrate and discuss the performance capabilities, limitations and perspectives of the SOA-MZI when it is architecturally configured to realize RF signal conversion into the microwave frequency band. Two different architectures, based on a SOA-MZI acting as an all-optical switch or as an all-optical modulator, are compared.

Abstract

The interaction of light with photonic resonators is determined by the eigenmodes of the system. Modal theories based on quasinormal modes provide a natural tool to calculate and understand light scattering by nanoresonators. We show that, in the case of resonators made of absorbing dielectric materials, eigenmodes with zero eigenfrequency (static modes) play a key role in the modal formalism. The excitation of static modes builds a non-resonant contribution to the modal expansion of the scattered field. This non-resonant term plays a crucial physical role since it largely contributes to the off-resonance signal to which resonances are added in amplitude, possibly leading to interference phenomena and Fano resonances. By considering light scattering by a silicon nanosphere, we quantify the impact of static modes. This study shows that the importance of static modes is not just formal. Modal expansions without static modes reconstruct an incorrect internal field and incorrect extinction and absorption cross-sections. Abstract

Assemblies of closely separated gold nanoparticles exhibit a strong collective plasmonic response due to coupling of the plasmon modes of the individual nanostructures. In the context of self-assembly of nanoparticles, close-packed two-dimensional (2D) clusters of spherical nanoparticles present an important composite system that promises numerous applications. The present study probes the collective plasmonic characteristics and resulting photothermal behavior of close-packed 2D Au nanoparticle clusters to delineate the effects of the cluster size, interparticle distance, and particle size. Smaller nanoparticles (20 and 40 nm in diameter) that exhibit low individual scattering and high absorption were considered for their relevance to photothermal applications. In contrast to typical literature studies, the present study compares the optical response of clusters of different sizes ranging from a single nanoparticle up to large assemblies of 61 nanoparticles. Increasing the cluster size induces significant changes to the spectral position and optophysical characteristics. Based on the model outcome, an optimal cluster size for maximum absorption per nanoparticle is also determined for enhanced photothermal effects. The effect of the particle size and interparticle distance is investigated to elucidate the nature of interaction in terms of near-field and far-field coupling. The photothermal effect resulting from absorption is compared for different cluster sizes and interparticle distances considering a homogeneous water medium. A strong dependence of the steady-state temperature of the nanoparticles on the cluster size, particle position in the cluster, incident light polarization, and interparticle distance provides new physical insight into the local temperature control of plasmonic nanostructures.

Abstract

A new measuring technique dedicated to bubble velocity and size measurements in complex bubbly flows such as those occurring in bubble columns is proposed. This sensor combines the phase detection capability of a conical optical fiber, with velocity measurements from the Doppler signal induced by an interface approaching the extremity of a single-mode fiber. The analysis of the probe functioning and of its response in controlled situations, have shown that the Doppler probe provides the translation velocity of bubbles projected along the probe axis. A reliable signal processing routine has been developed that exploits the Doppler signal arising at the gas-to-liquid transition: the resulting uncertainty on velocity is at most 14\%. Such a Doppler probe provides statistics on velocity and on size of gas inclusions, as well as local variables including void fraction, gas volumetric flux, number density and its flux. That sensor has been successfully exploited in an air-tap water bubble column 0.4m in diameter for global gas hold-up from 2.5 to 30\%. In the heterogeneous regime, the transverse profiles of the mean bubble velocity scaled by the value on the axis happen to be self-similar in the quasi fully developed region of the column. A fit is proposed for these profiles. In addition, on the axis, the standard deviation of bubble velocity scaled by the mean velocity increases with Vsg in the homogeneous regime, and it remains stable, close to 0.55, in the heterogeneous regime.

Abstract

International audience; Light Emitting Diodes emits no IR and no UV and their spectrum is fully in the visible part. But LEDs are not cold and all energy losses are thermal losses. The aim of this paper is to prove the feasibility to reuse the thermal losses to produce light through a thermoelectric module. Papers where Peltier modules are included in LEDs systems are all the time used for cooling [1-6]. At the knowledge of the authors, this the first time that thermal losses are used to increase the global efficiency of a high power LED lighting system by using Peltier modules to produce light.

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is a preferred technique for fast and direct multi-elemental mapping of samples under ambient pressure, without any limitation on the targeted element. However, LIBS mapping data have two peculiarities: an intrinsically low signal-to-noise ratio due to single-shot measurements, and a high dimensionality due to the high number of spectra acquired for imaging. This is all the truer as lateral resolution gets higher: in this case, the ablation spot diameter is reduced, as well as the ablated mass and the emission signal, while the number of spectra for a given surface increases. Therefore, efficient extraction of physico-chemical information from a noisy and large dataset is a major issue. Multivariate approaches were introduced by several authors as a means to cope with such data, particularly Principal Component Analysis. This technique is useful to analyse correlations between different elements, but it is limited to low signal-to-noise ratios. In this paper, we introduce HyperPCA, a new analysis tool for hyperspectral images based on a sparse representation of the data using Discrete Wavelet Transform and kernel-based sparse PCA to reduce the impact of noise on the data and to consistently extract the spectroscopic signal, with a particular emphasis on LIBS data. The method is first illustrated using simulated LIBS mapping datasets to emphasise its performances with an extremely low shot-to-shot signal-to-noise ratio, and with a variable degree of spectral interference. Comparisons to standard PCA and to traditional univariate data analyses are provided. Finally, it is used to process real data in two cases that clearly illustrate the potential of the proposed algorithm. Abstract

International audience; We report on the nonlinear temporal compression of mJ energy pulses from a Ti:Sa chirped pulse amplifier system ina multipass cell filled with argon. The pulses are compressed from 30 fs down to 5.3 fs, corresponding to two optical cycles. The post-compressed beam exhibits excellent spatial quality and homogeneity. These results provide guidelines for optimizing the compressed pulse quality and furtherscaling of multipass-cell-based post-compression down to the single-cycle regime.

Abstract

International audience; We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group velocity dispersion (GVD) generated by sharply localized perturbations of a normal GVD fiber that are either randomly or periodically placed along the fiber and that have random strength. This perturbation leads to the appearance of low frequency MI side lobes that grow with the strength of the perturbations, whereas they are faded by randomness in their position. If the random perturbations exhibit a finite average value, they can be compared with periodically perturbed fibers, where Arnold tongues appear. In that case, increased randomness in the strengths of the variations tends to affect the Arnold tongues less than increased randomness in their positions.

Abstract

We present a free-running 80-MHz dual-comb polarization-multiplexed solid-state laser which delivers 1.8 W of average power with 110-fs pulse duration per comb. With a high-sensitivity pump-probe setup, we apply this free-running dual-comb laser to picosecond ultrasonic measurements. The ultrasonic signatures in a semiconductor multi-quantum-well structure originating from the quantum wells and superlattice regions are revealed and discussed. We further demonstrate ultrasonic measurements on a thin-film metalized sample and compare these measurements to ones obtained with a pair of locked femtosecond lasers. Our data show that a free-running dual-comb laser is well-suited for picosecond ultrasonic measurements and thus it offers a significant reduction in complexity and cost for this widely adopted non-destructive testing technique.

Abstract

International audience; This paper aims to introduce a method for simulating with a real time performance the automotive LIDAR disturbance by dust clouds caused by natural phenomena, mechanical or man-made processes like a traveling vehicle. In this study, we are interested to study the interaction of an automotive LIDAR sensor with a dust cloud composed of solid particles. The main objective of this study is to provide a simulation model to industry and research laboratories that help to study LIDAR performance in a dust-sand environment with the capability to reproduce the encountered problems in degraded conditions and the ability to parameterize the degradation model. Based on industrial projects with a passenger's vehicles and truck manufacturers, we present LIDAR sensor and functionalities to perceive objects in a scene (pedestrian, car, truck, ...) in clear or extreme weather conditions. Simulated and experimental data are compared and analyzed in this article. The features presented are evaluated according to their quality for object detection. This study can be applied to sensors post-processing algorithms (object recognition, tracking, data fusion...) and even to the design of cleaning systems.

Abstract

With the aim of pushing the limiting magnitude of interferometric instruments, the need for wide-band detection channels and for a coordinated operation of different instruments has considerably grown in the field of long-baseline interferometry. For this reason, the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA), an array of six telescopes, requires a new configuration of longitudinal dispersion compensators to keep the fringe contrast above 95 per cent simultaneously in all spectral bands, while preserving the transmission above 85 per cent. In this paper, we propose a new method for defining the longitudinal dispersion compensators (LDC) suited for multiband observations. A literal approximation of the contrast loss resulting from the dispersion residues enables us to define a general criterion for fringe contrast maximization on several bands simultaneously. The optimization of this criterion leads to a simple solution with only two LDC stages per arm and existing differential delay lines, to the glass choice and a simple linear formula for thickness control of all these media. A refined criterion can also take into account glass transmission. After presenting this criterion, we give the optimal solution (medium, configuration) and its expected performance for the planned observing modes on CHARA.

Abstract

International audience; Laser Doppler holography was introduced as a full-field imaging technique to measure blood flow in the retina and choroid with an as yet unrivaled temporal resolution. We here investigate separating the different contributions to the power Doppler signal in order to isolate the flow waveforms of vessels in the posterior pole of the human eye. Distinct flow behaviors are found in retinal arteries and veins with seemingly interrelated waveforms. We demonstrate a full field mapping of the local resistivity index, and the possibility to perform unambiguous identification of retinal arteries and veins on the basis of their systolodiastolic variations. Finally we investigate the arterial flow waveforms in the retina and choroid and find synchronous and similar waveforms, although with a lower pulsatility in choroidal arteries. This work demonstrates the potential held by laser Doppler holography to study ocular hemodynamics in healthy and diseased eyes.

(to be published)]] has proved the existence of bounds from above and below for the Integrated Density of States (IDOS) of the Schr\"odinger operator throughout the spectrum, called the landscape law. These bounds involve dimensional constants whose optimal values are yet to be determined. Here, we investigate the accuracy of the landscape law in 1D and 2D tight-binding Anderson models, with binary or uniform random distributions. We show, in particular, that in 1D, the IDOS can be approximated with high accuracy through a single formula involving a remarkably simple multiplicative energy shift. Abstract

Detection of small cancer biomarkers with low molecular weight and a low concentration range has always been challenging yet urgent in many clinical applications such as diagnosing early-stage cancer, monitoring treatment and detecting relapse. Here, a highly enhanced plasmonic biosensor that can overcome this challenge using atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) phase change nanomaterial is developed. By precisely engineering the configuration with atomically thin materials, the phase singularity has been successfully achieved with a significantly enhanced lateral position shift effect. Based on our knowledge, it is the first experimental demonstration of a lateral position signal change > 340 {\mu}m at a sensing interface from all optical techniques. With this enhanced plasmonic effect, the detection limit has been experimentally demonstrated to be 10-15 mol L-1 for TNF-{\alpha} cancer marker, which has been found in various human diseases including inflammatory diseases and different kinds of cancer. The as-reported novel integration of atomically thin Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) with plasmonic substrate, which results in a phase singularity and thus a giant lateral position shift, enables the detection of cancer markers with low molecular weight at femtomolar level. Abstract

Photons have been identified early on as a very good candidate for quantum technologies applications, as carriers of quantum information, either by polarization encoding, time encoding or spatial encoding. Quantum cryptography, quantum communications, quantum networks and quantum computing are some of the applications targeted by the so called quantum photonics. Nevertheless, it was also clear at an early stage that bulk optics for handling quantum states of light would not be the best option for these technologies. More recently, single photons, entangled photons and quantum light in general have been coupled to integrated approaches coming from classical optics in order to meet the requirements of scalability, reliability and efficiency for quantum technologies. In this article, we describe our recent advances using elongated optical nano-fibers. We also present our latest results on nanocrystals made of perovskites and discuss some of their quantum properties. Abstract

Using parametric conversion induced by a Shapiro-type resonance, we produce and characterize a two-mode squeezed vacuum state in a sodium spin 1 Bose-Einstein condensate. Spin-changing collisions generate correlated pairs of atoms in the $m=\pm 1$ Zeeman states out of a condensate with initially all atoms in $m=0$. A novel fluorescence imaging technique with sensitivity $\Delta N \sim 1.6$ atom enables us to demonstrate the role of quantum fluctuations in the initial dynamics and to characterize the full distribution of the final state. Abstract

Reservoir computing is a bio-inspired computing paradigm for processing time dependent signals. The performance of its analogue implementations matches other digital algorithms on a series of benchmark tasks. Their potential can be further increased by feeding the output signal back into the reservoir, which would allow to apply the algorithm to time series generation. This requires, in principle, implementing a sufficiently fast readout layer for real-time output computation. Here we achieve this with a digital output layer driven by a FPGA chip. We demonstrate the first opto-electronic reservoir computer with output feedback and test it on two examples of time series generation tasks: frequency and random pattern generation. We obtain very good results on the first task, similar to idealised numerical simulations. The performance on the second one, however, suffers from the experimental noise. We illustrate this point with a detailed investigation of the consequences of noise on the performance of a physical reservoir computer with output feedback. Abstract

The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the near-field and far-field interactions between the nanoparticles. In this work, two hybridized modes were tuned in the UV spectral range to spectrally coincide with the intrinsic interband excitation and emission bands of ZnO nanocrystals. The refractive index of the ZnO nanocrystals layer influences the positions of the plasmonic modes and increases the role of the superstrate medium, which in turn results in the appearance of two separate modes in the small spectral region. Abstract

Doping is a fundamental property of semiconductors and constitutes the basis of modern microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. Their miniaturization requires contactless characterization of doping with nanometer-scale resolution. Here, we use low- and room-temperature cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements to analyze $p$-type and $n$-type $\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}$ thin films over a wide range of carrier densities ($2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{17}$ to $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$). The spectral shift and broadening of CL spectra induced by shallow dopant states and band filling are the signature of doping. We fit the whole spectral lineshapes with the generalized Planck law and refined absorption models to extract the bandgap narrowing and the band tail for both doping types, and the electron Fermi level for $n$ doping. This work provides a rigorous method for the quantitative assessment of $p$-type and $n$-type carrier densities using CL. Taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of CL, it can be used to map the doping in $\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}$ nanostructures, and it could be extended to other semiconductor materials.

Abstract

We introduce a multi-coiled acoustic metasurface providing a quasi-perfect absorption (reaching 99.99% in experiments) at extremely low-frequency of 50 Hz, and simultaneously featuring an ultrathin thickness down to {\lambda}/527 (1.3 cm). In contrast to the state of the art, this original conceived multi-coiled metasurface offers additional degrees of freedom capable to tune the acoustic impedance effectively without increasing the total thickness. We provide analytical derivation, numerical simulation and experimental demonstrations for this unique absorber concept, and discuss its physical mechanism which breaks the quarter-wavelength resonator theory. Furthermore, based on the same conceptual approach, we propose a broadband lowfrequency metasurface absorber by coupling unit cells exhibiting different properties.

Abstract

The discovery in 2000 that the ferromagnetic (FM) compound UGe2 (T_Curie = 52 K at ambient pressure) becomes superconducting under a pressure of P = 1.1 GPa until it enters the paramagnetic (PM) phase above Pc = 1.6 GPa was a surprise. Successive searches for new materials (URhGe and UCoGe) led to the discovery of the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and ferromagnetism at ambient pressure. Furthermore in UCoGe, it was found that SC survives in the PM regime from P_c = 1.1 to 4 GPa. Focus has been on low-temperature experiments under extreme conditions of magnetic field (H), pressure, and uniaxial stress. In UGe2, strong interplay exists between Fermi surface (FS) reconstructions in the cascade of different FM and PM ground states and their magnetic fluctuations. Similar phenomena occur in URhGe and UCoGe but, at first glance, the SC seems to be driven by the FM fluctuations. In UCoGe, a longitudinal field scan leads to a drastic decrease in the FM fluctuations, while a transverse field scan leads to suppression of the Curie temperature, T_Curie; the consequence is a boost in FM fluctuations, leading to a reinforcement of SC. The singularity in URhGe is the weakness of the anisotropy between c- and b-axes; the most noteworthy feature is the detection of reentrant SC near H_R. All the experimental results give evidence that the SC in these three materials originates from the FM fluctuations, which are amplitude modes of magnetic excitations in the FM state. Spin-triplet pairing has been anticipated in the FM superconductors and was actually observed by Knight-shift measurements in the SC state of UCoGe. Their fascinating (p, T, H) phase diagrams are now well established. Abstract

The influence of the misfit strain on the lateral shift (Goos-Hanchen effect) experienced by a near-infrared electromagnetic wave upon reflection from the surface of a bilayer consisting of a magnetic, gyrotropic (i.e., whose permittivity tensor elements depend upon magnetization) yttrium-iron garnet film deposited on a nonmagnetic gadolinium-gallium garnet substrate is investigated theoretically. In the geometry of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect, it is shown that the mechanical strain near the geometrical film/substrate interface can induce a significant lateral shift of the beam for incidence angles close to normal incidence, where no shift appears in the absence of strain. Our calculations demonstrate positive as well as negative values of the lateral shift, depending on the incident light polarization and on the film thickness. In contrast to that of the misfit strain, the influence of the magnetization of the gyrotropic film on the lateral shift is more noticeable for a TM- than for a TE-polarized wave., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We introduce the thermal-difference states (TDS), a three-parameter family of single-mode non-Gaussian bosonic states whose density operator is a weighted difference of two thermal states. We show that the states of "heralded photons" generated via parametric down-conversion (PDC) are precisely those among the TDS that are nonclassical, meaning they have a negative $P$-function. The three parameters correspond in that context to the initial brightness of PDC and the transmittances, characterizing the linear loss in the signal and the idler channels. At low initial brightness and unit transmittances, the heralded photon state is known to be a single-photon state. We explore the influence of brightness and linear loss on the heralded state of the signal mode. In particular, we analyze the influence of the initial brightness and the loss on the state nonclassicality by computing several measures of nonclassicality, such as the negative volume of the Wigner function, the sum of quantum Fisher information for two quadratures, and the ordering sensitivity, introduced recently by us [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 080402 (2019)]. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires, which are good candidates for applications based on integrated optics. Single ZnO nanowire photodetectors were fabricated with ohmic contacts. By taking current transient measurements in different atmospheres (oxygen, air, vacuum and argon), and at various temperatures, we point out the importance of surface effects on the electrical behaviour. Results confirm that oxygen chemisorption is responsible for the existence of a high photoconductive gain in these devices, and for the first time a two step process in the photocurrent rise transient is reported. A maximum gain of $G=7.8 \times 10^{7}$ is achieved. However, under certain conditions, the persistence of the photocurrent can last up to several hours and as such may prevent the device from operating at useful rates. From a knowledge of the photocurrent response mechanisms, we establish a method to restore the photodetector to its initial state, with very low dark current, by applying an appropriate gate voltage sequence. Abstract

Ultrafast Bessel beams demonstrate a significant capacity of structuring transparent materials with a high degree of accuracy and exceptional aspect ratio. The ability to localize energy on the nanometer scale (bypassing the 100-nm milestone) makes them ideal tools for advanced laser nanoscale processing on surfaces and in the bulk. This allows to generate and combine micron and nano-sized features into hybrid structures that show novel functionalities. Their high aspect ratio and the accurate location can equally drive an efficient material modification and processing strategy on large dimensions. We review, here, the main concepts of generating and using Bessel non-diffractive beams and their remarkable features, discuss general characteristics of their interaction with matter in ablation and material modification regimes, and advocate their use for obtaining hybrid micro and nanoscale structures in two and three dimensions (2D and 3D) performing complex functions. High-throughput applications are indicated. The example list ranges from surface nanostructuring and laser cutting to ultrafast laser welding and the fabrication of 3D photonic systems embedded in the volume.

Abstract

International audience; Although several optical techniques have been recently developed in order to overcome the resolution limit in microscopy, the imaging of sub-wavelength features is still a real challenge. In practise, super-resolution techniques remain difficult to build or are photo-toxic for the biological samples. However, microsphere-assisted microscopy has recently made super-resolution imaging accessible to scientists (e.g. optical metrologists, engineers and biologists). This paper presents an easy-to-implement optical setup to perform full-field and contactless super-resolution measurements of nanostructured media or biological elements. For this purpose, a classical microscope was enhanced by introducing a transparent microsphere. We show that this rather simple approach makes it possible to achieve a lateral resolution of 200 nm in air, i.e. the visualization of feature sizes of 100 nm.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a high level of control of the four-wave mixing process in an inert gas-filled inhibited-coupling guiding hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The specific multiple-branch dispersion profile in such fibers allows both correlated and separable bi-photon states to be produced. By controlling the choice of gas and its pressure and the fiber length, we experimentally generate various joint spectral intensity profiles in a stimulated regime that is transferable to the spontaneous regime. The generated profiles may cover both spectrally separable and correlated bi-photon states and feature frequency tuning over tens of THz, demonstrating a large dynamic control that will be very useful when implemented in the spontaneous regime as a photon pair source.

International audience; We experimentally investigate the evolution of the direct detection noise figure of a nondegenerate phase-sensitive amplifier based on a nonlinear fiber, as a function of the relative phase between the signal, idler, and pump, all other parameters remaining fixed. The use of a fiber with a high stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold permits us to investigate the full range of phase-sensitive gain and noise figure without pump dithering. Good agreement is found with theory, both for signal only and combined signal and idler direct detections.

Abstract

A nanofabrication process for realizing optical nanoantennas carved from a single-crystal gold plate is presented in this communication. The method relies on synthesizing two-dimensional micron-size gold crystals followed by the dry etching of a desired antenna layout. The fabrication of single-crystal optical nanoantennas with standard electron-beam lithography tool and dry etching reactor represents an alternative technological solution to focused ion beam milling of the objects. The process is exemplified by engineering nanorod antennas. Dark-field spectroscopy indicates that optical antennas produced from single crystal flakes have reduced localized surface plasmon resonance losses compared to amorphous designs of similar shape. The present process is easily applicable to other metals such as silver or copper and offers a design flexibility not found in crystalline particles synthesized by colloidal chemistry.

Abstract

We present a new method for building sequences of solvable profiles of the electromagnetic (EM) admittance in lossless isotropic materials with 1D graded permittivity and permeability (in particular profiles of the optical refractive-index). These solvable profiles lead to analytical closed-form expressions of the EM fields, for both TE and TM modes. The Property-and-Field Darboux Transformations method, initially developed for heat diffusion modelling, is here transposed to the Maxwell equations in the optical-depth space. Several examples are provided, all stemming from a constant seed-potential, which makes them based on elementary functions only. Solvable profiles of increasingly complex shape can be obtained by iterating the process or by assembling highly flexible canonical profiles. Abstract

Photon statistical measurements on a semiconductor microlaser, obtained using single-photon counting techniques, show that a newly discovered spontaneous pulsed emission regime possesses superthermal statistical properties. The observed spike dynamics, typical of small-scale devices, is at the origin of an unexpected discordance between the probability density function and its representation in terms of the first moments, a discordance so far unnoticed in all devices. Abstract

We present a general framework for studying strongly coupled radiative and conductive heat transfer between arbitrarily shaped bodies separated by sub-wavelength distances. Our formulation is based on a macroscopic approach that couples our recent fluctuating volume--current (FVC) method of near-field heat transfer to the more well known Fourier conduction transport equation. We apply our technique to consider heat exchange between aluminum-zinc oxide nanorods and show that the presence of bulk plasmon resonances can result in extremely large radiative heat transfer rates (roughly twenty times larger than observed in planar geometries), whose interplay with conductive transport leads to nonlinear temperature profiles along the nanorods., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We study the main nonlinear solutions of plasmonic slot waveguides made from an anisotropic metamaterial core with a positive Kerr-type nonlinearity surrounded by two semi-infinite metal regions. First, we demonstrate that for a highly anisotropic diagonal elliptical core, the bifurcation threshold of the asymmetric mode is reduced from GW/m threshold for the isotropic case to 50 MW/m one indicating a strong enhancement of the spatial nonlinear effects, and that the slope of the dispersion curve of the asymmetric mode stays positive, at least near the bifurcation, suggesting a stable mode. Abstract

International audience; Within the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle it is explicitly discussed the impact of these inequalities on the theory of integrated photonics at sub-wavelength regime. More especially, the uncertainty of the effective index values in nanophotonics at sub-wavelength regime, which is defined as the eigenvalue of the overall opto-geometric problems in integrated photonics, appears directly stemming from Heisenberg’s uncertainty. An apt formula is obtained allowing us to assume that the incertitude and the notion of eigenvalue called effective optical index or propagation constant is inversely proportional to the spatial dimensions of a given nanostructure yielding a transfer of the fuzziness on relevant senses of eigenvalues below a specific limit’s volume.

Abstract

International audience; Anisotropic nanomaterials possess interesting thermal transport properties because they allow orientation of heat fluxes along preferential directions due to a high ratio (up to three orders of magnitude) between their in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities. Among different techniques allowing thermal conductivity evaluation, micro-Raman scattering is known to be one of the most efficient contactless measurement approaches. In this letter, an experimental approach based on Raman scattering measurements with variable laser spot sizes is reported. Correlation between experimental and calculated thermal resistances of one-dimensional nanocrystalline solids allows a simultaneous estimation of their in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivities. In particular, our measurement approach is illustrated to be applied for anisotropic thermal conductivity evaluation of silicon nanowire arrays.

Abstract

We investigate lensless endoscopy using coherent beam combining and aperiodic multicore fibers (MCF). We show that diffracted orders, inherent to MCF with periodically arranged cores, dramatically reduce the field of view (FoV) and that randomness in MCF core positions can increase the FoV up to the diffraction limit set by a single fiber core, while maintaining MCF experimental feasibility. We demonstrate experimentally pixelation-free lensless endoscopy imaging over a 120 micron FoV with an aperiodic MCF designed with widely spaced cores. Abstract

We report an experimental test of single-shot polarimetry applied to the problem of real-time monitoring of the output polarization states in each core within a multicore fiber bundle. The technique uses a stress-engineered optical element together with an analyzer and provides a point spread function whose shape unambiguously reveals the polarization state of a point source. We implement this technique to monitor, simultaneously and in real time, the output polarization states of up to 180 single mode fiber cores in both conventional and polarization-maintaining bundles. Abstract

Optimization of Lamb modes induced by laser can be achieved by adjusting the spatial source distribution to the mode wavelength ($\lambda$). The excitability of Zero-Group Velocity (ZGV) resonances in isotropic plates is investigated both theoretically and experimentally for axially symmetric sources. Optimal parameters and amplitude gains are derived analytically for spot and annular sources of either Gaussian or rectangular energy profiles. For a Gaussian spot source, the optimal radius is found to be $\lambda_{ZGV}/\pi$. Annular sources increase the amplitude by at least a factor of 3 compared to the optimal Gaussian source. Rectangular energy profiles provide higher gain than Gaussian ones. These predictions are confirmed by semi-analytical simulation of the thermoelastic generation of Lamb waves, including the effect of material attenuation. Experimentally, Gaussian ring sources of controlled width and radius are produced with an axicon-lens system. Measured optimal geometric parameters obtained for Gaussian and annular beams are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. A ZGV resonance amplification factor of 2.1 is obtained with the Gaussian ring. Such source should facilitate the inspection of highly attenuating plates made of low ablation threshold materials like composites., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

International audience; The electron dynamics in dielectric materials induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses is theoretically addressed. The laser driven temporal evolution of the energy distribution of electrons in the conduction band is described by a kinetic Boltzmann equation. In addition to the collisional processes for energy transfer such as electron–phonon–photon and electron–electron interactions, a non-collisional process for photon absorption in the conduction band is included. It relies on direct transitions between sub-bands of the conduction band through multiphoton absorption. This mechanism is shown to significantly contribute to the laser heating of conduction electrons for large enough laser intensities. It also increases the time required for the electron distribution to reach the equilibrium state as described by the Fermi–Dirac statistics. Quantitative results are provided for quartz irradiated by a femtosecond laser pulse with a wavelength of 800 nm and for intensities in the range of tens of TW cm−2, lower than the ablation threshold. The change in the energy deposition induced by this non-collisional heating process is expected to have a significant influence on the laser processing of dielectric materials.

Abstract

International audience; By means of fluctuationnal electrodynamics, we calculate radiative heat flux between two pla-nar materials respectively made of SiC and SiO2. More specifically, we focus on a first (direct) situation where one of the two materials (for example SiC) is at ambient temperature whereas the second material is at a higher one, then we study a second (reverse) situation where the material temperatures are inverted. When the two fluxes corresponding to the two situations are different, the materials are said to exhibit a thermal rectification, a property with potential applications in thermal regulation. Rectification variations with temperature and separation distance are here reported. Calculations are performed using material optical data experimentally determined by Fourier transform emission spectrometry of heated materials between ambient temperature (around 300 K) and 1480 K. It is shown that rectification is much more important in the near-field domain, i.e. at separation distances smaller than the thermal wavelength. In addition, we see that the larger is the temperature difference, the larger is rectification. Large rectification is finally interpreted due to a weakening of the SiC surface polariton when temperature increases, a weakening which affects much less SiO2 resonances.

Abstract

We present a quantitative comparison between the high-pressure fuel spray images obtained experimentally using classical imaging with coherent and incoherent ultrafast illuminations recorded using a compatible CMOS camera. The ultrafast, incoherent illumination source was extracted from the supercontinuum generated by tightly focusing the femtosecond laser pulses in water. The average velocity maps computed using time-correlated image-pairs and spray edge complexity computed using the average curvature scale space maps are compared for the spray images obtained with the two illumination techniques and also for the numerically simulated spray using the coupled volume of fluid and level set method for interface tracking (direct numerical simulation or DNS). Abstract

HD~106906AB is so far the only young binary system around which a planet has been imaged and a debris disk evidenced thanks to a strong IR excess. As such, it represents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of young planetary systems. We aim at further investigating the close (tens of au scales) environment of the HD~106906AB system. We used the extreme AO fed, high contrast imager SPHERE recently installed on the VLT to observe HD~106906. Both the IRDIS imager and the Integral Field Spectrometer were used. We discovered a very inclined, ring-like disk at a distance of 65~au from the star. The disk shows a strong brightness asymmetry with respect to its semi-major axis. It shows a smooth outer edge, compatible with ejection of small grains by the stellar radiation pressure. We show furthermore that the planet's projected position is significantly above the disk's PA. Given the determined disk inclination, it is not excluded though that the planet could still orbit within the disk plane if at a large separation (2000--3000 au). We identified several additional point sources in the SPHERE/IRDIS field-of-view, that appear to be background objects. We compare this system with other debris disks sharing similarities, and we briefly discuss the present results in the framework of dynamical evolution., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics
