Motivated by an extremal problem on graph-codes that links coding theory and graph theory, Alon recently proposed a question aiming to find the smallest number $t$ such that there is an edge coloring of $K_{n}$ by $t$ colors with no copy of given graph $H$ in which every color appears an even number of times. When $H=K_{4}$, the question of whether $n^{o(1)}$ colors are enough, was initially emphasized by Alon. Through modifications to the coloring functions originally designed by Mubayi, and Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov, the question of $K_{4}$ has already been addressed. Expanding on this line of inquiry, we further study this new variant of the generalized Ramsey problem and provide a conclusively affirmative answer to Alon's question concerning $K_{5}$., Note added: Heath and Zerbib also proved the result on $K_{5}$ independently. arXiv:2307.01314

In this paper, we take a modest first step towards a systematic study of chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. We lose little when we consider these graphs only when they are connected and of finite degree. As in the work of Heuberger and others, in such cases the graph can be represented by an $m\times r$ integer matrix, where we call $m$ the dimension and $r$ the rank. Adding or subtracting rows produces a graph homomorphism to a graph with a matrix of smaller dimension, thereby giving an upper bound on the chromatic number of the original graph. In this article we develop the foundations of this method. In a series of follow-up articles using this method, we completely determine the chromatic number in cases with small dimension and rank; prove a generalization of Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs; and provide an alternate proof of Payan's theorem that a cube-like graph cannot have chromatic number 3., Comment: 17 pages

An edge e is normal in a proper edge-coloring of a cubic graph G if the number of distinct colors on four edges incident to e is 2 or 4: A normal edge-coloring of G is a proper edge-coloring in which every edge of G is normal. The Petersen Coloring Conjecture is equivalent to stating that every bridgeless cubic graph has a normal 5-edge-coloring. Since every 3-edge-coloring of a cubic graph is trivially normal, it is suficient to consider only snarks to establish the conjecture. In this paper, we consider a class of superpositioned snarks obtained by choosing a cycle C in a snark G and superpositioning vertices of C by one of two simple supervertices and edges of C by superedges Hx;y, where H is any snark and x; y any pair of nonadjacent vertices of H: For such superpositioned snarks, two suficient conditions are given for the existence of a normal 5-edge-coloring. The first condition yields a normal 5-edge-coloring for all hypohamiltonian snarks used as superedges, but only for some of the possible ways of connecting them. In particular, since the Flower snarks are hypohamiltonian, this consequently yields a normal 5-edge-coloring for many snarks superpositioned by the Flower snarks. The second sufficient condition is more demanding, but its application yields a normal 5-edge-colorings for all superpositions by the Flower snarks. The same class of snarks is considered in [S. Liu, R.-X. Hao, C.-Q. Zhang, Berge{Fulkerson coloring for some families of superposition snarks, Eur. J. Comb. 96 (2021) 103344] for the Berge-Fulkerson conjecture. Since we established that this class has a Petersen coloring, this immediately yields the result of the above mentioned paper., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures

Hadwiger's Conjecture asserts that every $K_h$-minor-free graph is properly $(h-1)$-colourable. We prove the following improper analogue of Hadwiger's Conjecture: for fixed $h$, every $K_h$-minor-free graph is $(h-1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. The number of colours is best possible regardless of the size of monochromatic components. It solves an open problem of Edwards, Kang, Kim, Oum and Seymour [\emph{SIAM J. Disc. Math.} 2015], and concludes a line of research initiated in 2007. Similarly, for fixed $t\geq s$, we show that every $K_{s,t}$-minor-free graph is $(s+1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. The number of colours is best possible, solving an open problem of van de Heuvel and Wood [\emph{J.~London Math.\ Soc.} 2018]. We actually prove a single theorem from which both of the above results are immediate corollaries. For an excluded apex minor, we strengthen the result as follows: for fixed $t\geq s\geq 3$, and for any fixed apex graph $X$, every $K_{s,t}$-subgraph-free $X$-minor-free graph is $(s+1)$-colourable with monochromatic components of bounded size. The number of colours is again best possible., Comment: 81 pages!

Let $G$ be a graph and $k$ be a positive integer, and let $Kc(G, k)$ denote the number of Kempe equivalence classes for the $k$-colorings of $G$. In 2006, Mohar noted that $Kc(G, k) = 1$ if $G$ is bipartite. As a generalization, we show that $Kc(G, k) = 1$ if $G$ is formed from a bipartite graph by adding any number of edges less than $\binom{\lceil k/2\rceil}2+\binom{\lfloor k/2\rfloor}2$. We show that our result is tight (up to lower order terms) by constructing, for each $k \geq 8$, a graph $G$ formed from a bipartite graph by adding $(k^2+8k-45+1)/4$ edges such that $Kc(G, k) \geq 2$. This refutes a recent conjecture of Higashitani--Matsumoto., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

A graph $G$ is equitably $k$-choosable if, for every $k$-uniform list assignment $L$, $G$ is $L$-colorable and each color appears on at most $\left\lceil |V(G)|/k\right\rceil$ vertices. Equitable list-coloring was introduced by Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West in 2003. They conjectured that a connected graph $G$ with $\Delta(G)\geq 3$ is equitably $\Delta(G)$-choosable, as long as $G$ is not complete or $K_{d,d}$ for odd $d$. In this paper, we use a discharging argument to prove their conjecture for the infinite family of prism graphs., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted for publication in May 2023

In a (proper) edge-coloring of a bridgeless cubic graph G an edge e is rich (resp. poor) if the number of colors of all edges incident to end-vertices of e is 5 (resp. 3). An edge-coloring of G is is normal if every edge of G is either rich or poor. In this paper we consider snarks ~G obtained by a simple superposition of edges and vertices of a cycle C in a snark G: For an even cycle C we show that a normal coloring of G can be extended to a normal coloring of ~G without changing colors of edges outside C in G: An interesting remark is that this is in general impossible for odd cycles, since the normal coloring of a Petersen graph P10 cannot be extended to a superposition of P10 on a 5-cycle without changing colors outside the 5-cycle. On the other hand, as our colorings of the superpositioned snarks introduce 18 or more poor edges, we are inclined to believe that every bridgeless cubic graph istinct from P10 has a normal coloring with at least one poor edge and possibly with at least 6 if we also exclude the Petersen graph with one vertex truncated., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

A connected Cayley graph on an abelian group with a finite generating set $S$ can be represented by its Heuberger matrix, i.e., an integer matrix whose columns generate the group of relations between members of $S$. In a companion article, the authors lay the foundation for the use of Heuberger matrices to study chromatic numbers of abelian Cayley graphs. We call the number of rows in the Heuberger matrix the dimension, and the number of columns the rank. In this paper, we give precise numerical conditions that completely determine the chromatic number in all cases with dimension $1$; with rank $1$; and with dimension $\leq 3$ and rank $\leq 2$. For such a graph without loops, we show that it is $4$-colorable if and only if it does not contain a $5$-clique, and it is $3$-colorable if and only if it contains neither a diamond lanyard nor a $C_{13}(1,5)$, both of which we define herein. In a separate companion article, we show that we recover Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs as a special case of our theorem for dimension $3$ and rank $2$., Comment: 27 pages

A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex coloring in which each vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. In this note we simplify some proof techniques and generalize previously known results on various generalizations of majority coloring. In particular, our unified and simplified approach works for paintability - an on-line analog of the list coloring.

The dichromatic number of a directed graph is at most 2, if we can 2-color the vertices such that each monochromatic part is acyclic. An oriented graph arises from a graph by orienting its edges in one of the two possible directions. We study oriented graphs, which have dichromatic number more than 2. Such a graph $D$ is $3$-dicritical if the removal of any arc of $D$ reduces the dichromatic number to 2. We construct infinitely many $3$-dicritical oriented graphs. Neumann-Lara found the four $7$-vertex $3$-dichromatic tournaments. We determine the $8$-vertex $3$-dichromatic tournaments, which do not contain any of these, there are $64$ of them. We also find all $3$-dicritical oriented graphs on $8$ vertices, there are $159$ of them. We determine the smallest number of arcs that a $3$-dicritical oriented graph can have. There is a unique oriented graph with $7$ vertices and $20$ arcs.

A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is {\em semistrong} if every edge of $M$ has an endvertex of degree one in the subgraph induced by the vertices of $M$. A {\em semistrong edge-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper edge-coloring in which every color class induces a semistrong matching. In this paper, we continue investigation of properties of semistrong edge-colorings initiated by Gy\'{a}rf\'{a}s and Hubenko ({Semistrong edge coloring of graphs}. \newblock {\em J. Graph Theory}, 49 (2005), 39--47). We establish tight upper bounds for general graphs and for graphs with maximum degree $3$. We also present bounds about semistrong edge-coloring which follow from results regarding other, at first sight non-related, problems. We conclude the paper with several open problems.

A graph is locally irregular if the degrees of the end-vertices of every edge are distinct. An edge coloring of a graph G is locally irregular if every color induces a locally irregular subgraph of G. A colorable graph G is any graph which admits a locally irregular edge coloring. The locally irregular chromatic index X'irr(G) of a colorable graph G is the smallest number of colors required by a locally irregular edge coloring of G. The Local Irregularity Conjecture claims that all colorable graphs require at most 3 colors for a locally irregular edge coloring. Recently, it has been observed that the conjecture does not hold for the bow-tie graph B, since B is colorable and requires at least 4 colors for a locally irregular edge coloring. Since B is a cactus graph and all non-colorable graphs are also cacti, this seems to be a relevant class of graphs for the Local Irregularity Conjecture. In this paper we establish that X'irr(G), 9 pages, 2 figures

Let $f: V(G)\cup E(G)\rightarrow \{1,2,\dots,k\}$ be a non-proper total $k$-coloring of $G$. Define a weight function on total coloring as $$\phi(x)=f(x)+\sum\limits_{e\ni x}f(e)+\sum\limits_{y\in N(x)}f(y),$$ where $N(x)=\{y\in V(G)|xy\in E(G)\}$. If $\phi(x)\neq \phi(y)$ for any edge $xy\in E(G)$, then $f$ is called a neighbor full sum distinguishing total $k$-coloring of $G$. The smallest value $k$ for which $G$ has such a coloring is called the neighbor full sum distinguishing total chromatic number of $G$ and denoted by fgndi$_{\sum}(G)$. The coloring is an extension of neighbor sum distinguishing non-proper total coloring. In this paper we conjecture that fgndi$_{\sum}(G)\leq 3$ for any connected graph $G$ of order at least three. We prove that the conjecture is true for (i) paths and cycles; (ii) 3-regular graphs and (iii) stars, complete graphs, trees, hypercubes, bipartite graphs and complete $r$-partite graphs. In particular, complete graphs can achieve the upper bound for the above conjecture., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2107.00424

This is the third (and most technical!) in a sequence of seven papers in which we prove the following: Suppose we have a graph $G$ embedded on a surface of genus $g$. Then $G$ can be $L$-colored, where $L$ is a list-assignment for $G$ in which every vertex has a 5-list except for a collection of pairwise far-apart components, each precolored with an ordinary 2-coloring, as long as the face-width of $G$ is at leat $2^{\Omega(g)}$ and the precolored components are of distance at least $2^{\Omega(g)}$ apart. This provides an affirmative answer to a generalized version of a conjecture of Thomassen and also generalizes a result from 2017 of Dvo\v{r}\'ak, Lidick\'y, Mohar, and Postle about distant precolored vertices. As an application of this result, we prove (in a follow-up to this sequence of papers) a generalization of a result of Dvo\v{r}\'ak, Lidick\'y, and Mohar which states that if a graph drawn in the plane so that all crossings in $G$ are pairwise of distance at least 15 apart, then $G$ is 5-choosable. In our generalization, we prove an analogous result in which planar drawings with pairwise far-apart crossings have been replaced by drawings on arbitrary surfaces with pairwise far-apart matchings with many crossings, where the graph obtained by deleting these matching edges is a high-face-width embedding., Comment: 48 pages, 7 figures

In the problem ${\rm Mix}(H)$ one is given a graph $G$ and must decide if the Hom-graph ${\rm {\bf Hom}}(G,H)$ is connected. We show that if $H$ is a triangle-free reflexive graph with at least one cycle, ${\rm Mix}(H)$ is ${\rm coNP}$-complete. The main part of this is a reduction to the problem ${\rm NonFlat}({\rm{\bf H}})$ for a simplicial complex ${\rm{\bf H}}$, in which one is given a simplicial complex ${\rm{\bf G}}$ and must decide if there are any simplicial maps $\phi$ from ${\rm{\bf G}}$ to ${\rm{\bf H}}$ under which some $1$-cycles of ${\rm{\bf G}}$ maps to homologically non-trivial cycle of ${\rm{\bf H}}$. We show that for any reflexive graph $H$, if the clique complex ${\rm{\bf H}}$ of $H$ has a free, non-trivial homology group $H_1({\rm{\bf H}})$, then ${\rm NonFree}({\rm{\bf H}})$ is ${\rm NP}$-complete.

The DP-coloring problem is a generalization of the list-coloring problem in which the goal is to find an independent transversal in a certain topological cover of a graph $G$. In the online DP-coloring problem, the cover of $G$ is revealed one component at a time, and the independent transversal of the cover must be constructed in parts based on incomplete information. Kim, Kostochka, Li, and Zhu asked whether the chromatic numbers corresponding to these two graph coloring problems can have an arbitrarily large difference in a single graph. We answer this question in the affirmative by constructing graphs for which the gap between the online DP-chromatic number and the offline DP-chromatic number is arbitrarily large., Comment: 5 page note

Let $G$ be a planar embedding with list-assignment $L$ and outer cycle $C$, and let $P$ be a path of length at most four on $C$, where each vertex of $G\setminus C$ has a list of size at least five and each vertex of $C\setminus P$ has a list of size at least three. This is the first paper in a sequence of three papers in which we prove some results about partial $L$-colorings $\phi$ of $C$ with the property that any extension of $\phi$ to an $L$-coloring of $\textrm{dom}(\phi)\cup V(P)$ extends to $L$-color all of $G$, and, in particular, some useful results about the special case in which $\textrm{dom}(\phi)$ consists only of the endpoints of $P$. We also prove some results about the other special case in which $\phi$ is allowed to color some vertices of $C\setminus\mathring{P}$ but we avoid taking too many colors away from the leftover vertices of $\mathring{P}\setminus\textrm{dom}(\phi)$. A locally irregular multigraph is a multigraph whose adjacent vertices have distinct degrees. The locally irregular edge coloring is an edge coloring of a multigraph $G$ such that every color induces a locally irregular submultigraph of $G$. We say that a multigraph $G$ is locally irregular colorable if it admits a locally irregular edge coloring and we denote by ${\rm lir}(G)$ the locally irregular chromatic index of $G$, which is the smallest number of colors required in a locally irregular edge coloring of a locally irregular colorable multigraph $G$. We conjecture that for every connected graph $G$, which is not isomorphic to $K_2$, multigraph $^2G$ obtained from $G$ by doubling each edge admits ${\rm lir}(^2G)\leq 2$. This concept is closely related to the well known 1-2-3 Conjecture, Local Irregularity Conjecture, (2, 2) Conjecture and other similar problems concerning edge colorings. We show this conjecture holds for graph classes like paths, cycles, wheels, complete graphs, complete $k$-partite graphs and bipartite graphs. A multigraph is locally irregular if the degrees of the end-vertices of every multiedge are distinct. The locally irregular coloring is an edge coloring of a multigraph $G$ such that every color induces a locally irregular submultigraph of $G$. A locally irregular colorable multigraph $G$ is any multigraph which admits a locally irregular coloring. We denote by ${\rm lir}(G)$ the locally irregular chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, which is the smallest number of colors required in the locally irregular coloring of the locally irregular colorable multigraph $G$. In case of graphs the definitions are similar. The Local Irregularity Conjecture for 2-multigraphs claims that for every connected graph $G$, which is not isomorphic to $K_2$, multigraph $^2G$ obtained from $G$ by doubling each edge satisfies ${\rm lir}(^2G)\leq 2$. We show this conjecture for cacti. This class of graphs is important for the Local Irregularity Conjecture for 2-multigraphs and the Local Irregularity Conjecture which claims that every locally irregular colorable graph $G$ satisfies ${\rm lir}(G)\leq 3$. At the beginning it has been observed that all not locally irregular colorable graphs are cacti. Recently it has been proved that there is only one cactus which requires 4 colors for a locally irregular coloring and therefore the Local Irregularity Conjecture was disproved., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

In our generalization, we prove an analogous result in which planar drawings with pairwise far-apart crossings have been replaced by drawings on arbitrary surfaces with pairwise far-apart matchings with many crossings, where the graph obtained by deleting these matching edges is a high-face-width embedding., Comment: 31 pages

The (independent) chromatic vertex stability ($\ivs(G)$) $\vs(G)$ is the minimum size of (independent) set $S\subseteq V(G)$ such that $\chi(G-S)=\chi(G)-1$. In this paper we construct infinitely many graphs $G$ with $\Delta(G)=4$, $\chi(G)=3$, $\ivs(G)=3$ and $\vs(G)=2$, which gives a partial negative answer to a problem posed in \cite{ABKM}., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Given a finite family $\cal{F}$ of graphs, we say that a graph $G$ is ``$\cal{F}$-free'' if $G$ does not contain any graph in $\cal{F}$ as a subgraph. A vertex-colored graph \(H\) is called ``rainbow'' if no two vertices of $H$ have the same color. Given an integer $s$ and a finite family of graphs $\cal{F}$, let $\ell(s,\cal{F})$ denote the smallest integer such that any properly vertex-colored $\cal{F}$-free graph $G$ having $χ(G)\geq \ell(s,\cal{F})$ contains an induced rainbow path on $s$ vertices. Scott and Seymour showed that $\ell(s,K)$ exists for every complete graph $K$. A conjecture of N.~R.~Aravind states that $\ell(s,C_3)=s$. The upper bound on $\ell(s,C_3)$ that can be obtained using the methods of Scott and Seymour setting $K=C_3$ are, however, super-exponential. Gyárfás and Sárközy showed that $\ell(s,\{C_3,C_4\})=\cal{O}\big((2s)^{2s}\big)$. For $r\geq 2$, we show that $\ell(s,K_{2,r})\leq (r-1)(s-1)s/2+s$ and therefore, $\ell(s,C_4)\leq\frac{s^2+s}{2}$. This significantly improves Gyárfás and Sárközy's bound and also covers a bigger class of graphs. We adapt our proof to achieve much stronger upper bounds for graphs of higher girth: we prove that $\ell(s,\{C_3,C_4,\ldots,C_{g-1}\})\leq s^{1+\frac{4}{g-4}}$, where $g\geq 5$. Moreover, in each case, our results imply the existence of at least $s!/2$ distinct induced rainbow paths on $s$ vertices. Along the way, we obtain some new results on an oriented variant of the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture. For $r\geq 2$, let $\cal{B}_r$ denote the orientations of $K_{2,r}$ in which one vertex has out-degree $r$. We show that every $\cal{B}_r$-free oriented graph having chromatic number at least $(r-1)(s-1)(s-2)+2s+1$ and every bikernel-perfect oriented graph with girth $g\geq 5$ having chromatic number at least $2s^{1+\frac{4}{g-4}}$ contains every oriented tree on at most $s$ vertices as an induced subgraph., 20 pages, 1 figure

The acyclic chromatic number of a graph is the least number of colors needed to properly color its vertices so that none of its cycles has only two colors. We show that for all $\alpha>2^{-1/3}$ there exists an integer $\Delta_{\alpha}$ such that if the maximum degree $\Delta$ of a graph is at least $\Delta_{\alpha}$, then the acyclic chromatic number of the graph is at most $\lceil\alpha {\Delta}^{4/3} \rceil +\Delta+ 1$. The previous best bound, due to Gon\c{c}alves et al (2020), was $(3/2) \Delta^{4/3} + O(\Delta)$., Comment: Lemma 5 is wrong

The Burling sequence is a sequence of triangle-free graphs of increasing chromatic number. Any graph which is an induced subgraph of a graph in this sequence is called a Burling graph. These graphs have attracted some attention because they have geometric representations and because they provide counter-examples to several conjectures about bounding the chromatic number in classes of graphs. We recall an equivalent definition of Burling graphs from the first part of this work: the graphs derived from a tree. We then give several structural properties of derived graphs., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures

Recently, Kostochka and Yancey proved that a conjecture of Ore is asymptotically true by showing that every $k$-critical graph satisfies $|E(G)|\geq\left\lceil\left(\frac{k}{2}-\frac{1}{k-1}\right)|V(G)|-\frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}\right\rceil.$ They also characterized the class of graphs that attain this bound and showed that it is equivalent to the set of $k$-Ore graphs. We show that for any $k\geq33$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ so that if $G$ is a $k$-critical graph, then $|E(G)|\geq\left(\frac{k}{2}-\frac{1}{k-1}+\varepsilon_k\right)|V(G)|-\frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}-(k-1)\varepsilon T(G)$, where $T(G)$ is a measure of the number of disjoint $K_{k-1}$ and $K_{k-2}$ subgraphs in $G$. This also proves for $k\geq33$ the following conjecture of Postle regarding the asymptotic density: For every $k\geq4$ there exists an $\varepsilon_k>0$ such that if $G$ is a $k$-critical $K_{k-2}$-free graph, then $|E(G)|\geq \left(\frac{k}{2}-\frac{1}{k-1}+\varepsilon_k\right)|V(G)|-\frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}$. As a corollary, our result shows that the number of disjoint $K_{k-2}$ subgraphs in a $k$-Ore graph scales linearly with the number of vertices and, further, that the same is true for graphs whose number of edges is close to Kostochka and Yancey's bound., 20 pages

We define a $P$-compelling coloring as a proper coloring of the vertices of a graph such that every subset consisting of one vertex of each color has property $P$. The $P$-compelling chromatic number is the minimum number of colors in such a coloring. We show that this notion generalizes the dominator and total dominator chromatic numbers, and provide some general bounds and algorithmic results. We also investigate the specific cases where $P$ is that the subset contains at least one edge or that the subset is connected.

The Erds--Faber--Lovsz Conjecture, posed in 1972, states that if a graph $G$ is the union of $n$ cliques of order $n$ (referred to as defining $n$-cliques) such that two cliques can share at most one vertex, then the vertices of $G$ can be properly coloured using $n$ colours. Although still open after almost 50 years, it can be easily shown that the conjecture is true when every shared vertex belongs to exactly two defining $n$-cliques. We here provide a quick and easy algorithm to colour the vertices of $G$ in this case, and discuss connections with clique-decompositions and edge-colourings of graphs., 6 pages

We show that for any assignment of forbidden color pairs to the edges of a $d$-degenerate graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of edge-multiplicity at most $\log \log n$, $O(\sqrt{ d } \log n)$ colors are always enough to color the vertices of $G$ in a way that avoids every forbidden color pair. The adaptable choosability of a multigraph $G$, denoted $\mathrm{ch}_a(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that any edge labelling, $\tau$, of $G$ and any assignment of lists of size $k$ to the vertices of $G$ permits a list colouring, $\sigma$, of $G$ such that there is no edge $e = uv$ where $\tau(e) = \sigma(u) = \sigma(v)$. Here we show that for a multigraph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta$ and no cycles of length 3 or 4, $\mathrm{ch}_a(G) \leq (2\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{\Delta/\ln\Delta}$. Under natural restrictions we can show that the same bound holds for the conflict choosability of $G$, which is a closely related parameter defined by Dvo\v{r}\'ak, Esperet, Kang and Ozeki [arXiv:1803.10962]., Comment: 30 pages

The Burling sequence is a sequence of triangle-free graphs of unbounded chromatic number. The class of Burling graphs consists of all the induced subgraphs of the graphs of this sequence. In the first and second parts of this work, we introduced derived graphs, a class of graphs, equal to the class of Burling graphs, and proved several geometric and structural results about them. In this third part, we use those results to find some Burling and non-Burling graphs, and we see some applications of this in the theory of $$-boundedness. In particular, we show that several graphs, like $ K_5 $, some series-parallel graphs that we call necklaces, and some other graphs are not weakly pervasive., 24 pages, 15 figures Some typos fixed in this new version

Let $G$ be a simple connected graph. For any two vertices $u$ and $v$, let $d(u,v)$ denote the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$. A radio-$k$-labeling of $G$ for a fixed positive integer $k$ is a function $f$ which assigns to each vertex a non-negative integer label such that for every two vertices $u$ and $ v $ in $G$, $|f(u)-f(v)| \geq k - d(u,v) +1$. The span of $f$ is the difference between the largest and smallest labels of $f(V)$. The radio-$k$-number of a graph $G$, denoted by $rn_k(G)$, is the smallest span among all radio-$k$-labelings admitted by $G$. A cycle $C_n$ has diameter $d=\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$. In this paper, we combine a lower bound approach with cyclic group structure to determine the value of $ rn_k(C_n)$ for $k \geq n-3$. For $d \leq k < n-3$, we obtain the values of $rn_k(C_n)$ when $n$ and $k$ have the same parity, and prove partial results when $n$ and $k$ have different parities. Our results extend the known values of $rn_d (C_n)$ and $rn_{d+1} (C_n)$ shown by Liu and Zhu, and by Karst, Langowitz, Oehrlein and Troxell, respectively., 18 pages, 3 figures

A bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is said to have a 2-bisection if there exists a 2-vertex-colouring of $G$ (not necessarily proper) such that: (i) the colour classes have the same cardinality, and (ii) the monochromatic components are either an isolated vertex or an edge. In 2016, Ban and Linial conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph, apart from the well-known Petersen graph, admits a 2-bisection. In the same paper it was shown that every Class I bridgeless cubic graph admits such a bisection. The Class II bridgeless cubic graphs which are critical to many conjectures in graph theory are known as snarks, in particular, those with excessive index at least 5, that is, whose edge set cannot be covered by four perfect matchings. Moreover, in [J. Graph Theory, 86(2) (2017), 149--158], Esperet et al. state that a possible counterexample to Ban--Linial's Conjecture must have circular flow number at least 5. The same authors also state that although empirical evidence shows that several graphs obtained from the Petersen graph admit a 2-bisection, they can offer nothing in the direction of a general proof. Despite some sporadic computational results, until now, no general result about snarks having excessive index and circular flow number both at least 5 has been proven. In this work we show that treelike snarks, which are an infinite family of snarks heavily depending on the Petersen graph and with both their circular flow number and excessive index at least 5, admit a 2-bisection., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

For positive integers $r$ and $t$, the hypergraph matching Ramsey number $R_r(s_1,\ldots,s_t)$ is the least integer $n$ such that for any $t$-hyperedge coloring of complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^r$, there exists at least one $j\in\{1,2,\ldots,t\}$ such that the subhypergraph of all hyperedges receiving color $j$ contains at least one matching of size $s_j$. This parameter was completely determined by Alon, Frankl, and Lov\'asz in 1986. In 2015, the first present author and Hossein Hajiabolhassan found a sharp lower bound for the chromatic number of general Kneser hypergraphs by means of the notion of alternation number of hypergraphs. In this paper, as our first result, we establish a theory to give a development of this result. Doing so, as our second result, we resolve the problem of characterizing $R_r(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_t)$. Our final result is introducing a generalization of $\mathbf{\mathbb{Z}_p}$-Tucker Lemma together with an application of this generalized lemma in determining the matching Ramsey number $R_r(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_t)$., Comment: 9 pages

An odd graph is a finite graph all of whose vertices have odd degrees. Given graph $G$ is decomposable into $k$ odd subgraphs if its edge set can be partitioned into $k$ subsets each of which induces an odd subgraph of $G$. The minimum value of $k$ for which such a decomposition of $G$ exists is the odd chromatic index, $\chi_{o}'(G)$, introduced by Pyber (1991). For every $k\geq\chi_{o}'(G)$, the graph $G$ is said to be odd $k$-edge-colorable. Apart from two particular exceptions, which are respectively odd $5$- and odd $6$-edge-colorable, the rest of connected loopless graphs are odd $4$-edge-colorable, and moreover one of the color classes can be reduced to size $\leq2$. In addition, it has been conjectured that an odd $4$-edge-coloring with a color class of size at most $1$ is always achievable. Atanasov et al. (2016) characterized the class of subcubic graphs in terms of the value $\chi_{o}'(G)\leq4$. In this paper, we extend their result to a characterization of all subdivisions of odd graphs in terms of the value of the odd chromatic index. This larger class $\mathcal{S}$ is of a particular interest as it collects all `least instances' of non-odd graphs. As a prelude to our main result, we show that every connected graph $G\in \mathcal{S}$ requiring the maximum number of four colors, becomes odd $3$-edge-colorable after removing a certain edge. Thus, we provide support for the mentioned conjecture by proving it for all subdivisions of odd graphs. The paper concludes with few problems for possible further work., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures

A $λ$-backbone coloring of a graph $G$ with its subgraph (also called a backbone) $H$ is a function $c \colon V(G) \rightarrow \{1,\dots, k\}$ ensuring that $c$ is a proper coloring of $G$ and for each $\{u,v\} \in E(H)$ it holds that $|c(u) - c(v)| \ge λ$. In this paper we propose a way to color cliques with tree and forest backbones in linear time that the largest color does not exceed $\max\{n, 2 λ\} + Δ(H)^2 \lceil\log{n} \rceil$. This result improves on the previously existing approximation algorithms as it is $(Δ(H)^2 \lceil\log{n} \rceil)$-absolutely approximate, i.e. with an additive error over the optimum. We also present an infinite family of trees $T$ with $Δ(T) = 3$ for which the coloring of cliques with backbones $T$ require to use at least $\max\{n, 2 λ\} + Ω(\log{n})$ colors for $λ$ close to $\frac{n}{2}$., 22 pages, 3 figures

Given a graph $G$, a \textit{$k$-total difference labeling} of the graph is a total labeling $f$ from the set of edges and vertices to the set $\{1, 2, \cdots k\}$ satisfying that for any edge $\{u,v\}$, $f(\{u,v\})=|f(u)-f(v)|$. In this paper, we propose a high-speed greedy sequential algorithm for the vertex coloring problem (VCP), based on the Wave Function Collapse algorithm, called Wave Function Collapse Coloring (WFC-C). An iteration of this algorithm goes through three distinct phases: vertex selection, color restriction through wave function collapsing, and domain propagation. In effect, WFC-C propagates color choices or "domain" restrictions beyond immediate neighbourhoods. This heuristic, combined with a series of other greedy optimizations, allows for a fast algorithm that prevents certain color conflicts. Through extensive experiments, we show that WFC-C remains competitive (and occasionally better) in terms of optimal coloring, and dramatically outperforms existing high-speed VCP, with on average speed differences ranging from 2000 times to 16000 times, on the most difficult instances of the DIMACS benchmark., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table and 7 pseudocodes

The 1-2-3 Conjecture, posed by Karo\'{n}ski, {\L}uczak and Thomason, asked whether every connected graph $G$ different from $K_2$ can be 3-edge-weighted so that every two adjacent vertices of $G$ get distinct sums of incident weights. The 1-2 Conjecture states that if vertices also receive colors and the vertex color is added to the sum of its incident edges, then adjacent vertices can be distinguished using only $\{ 1,2\}$. In this paper we confirm 1-2 Conjecture for 3-regular graphs. Meanwhile, we show that every 3-regular graph can achieve a neighbor sum distinguishing edge coloring by using 4 colors, which answers 1-2-3 Conjecture positively.

The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $(G) \geq 9$ and $(G) \leq (G)-1$, then $(G)\leq(G) -1$. We prove the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture for $(P_5, \text{gem})$-free graphs, i.e., graphs with no induced $P_5$ and no induced $K_1\vee P_4$., 8 pages, 6 figures
