The intermetallic compound \PFA\ that possesses a three-dimensional network structure of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr is investigated through neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering in order to elucidate the magnetic ground state of Pr and Fe and the crystal field effects of Pr. Our neutron diffraction study confirms long-range magnetic order of Pr below $T_N $ = 4.5~K in this compound. Subsequent magnetic structure estimation reveals a magnetic propagation vector $k$ = ($\frac{1}{2}$~0~$\frac{1}{2}$) with a magnetic moment value of 2.5~$\mu_\mathrm{B}$/Pr along the orthorhombic $c$-axis and evidence the lack of ordering in the Fe sublattice. The inelastic neutron scattering study reveals one crystalline electric field excitation near 19~meV at 5~K in \PFA. The energy-integrated intensity of the 19~meV excitation as a function of |$Q$| $(A^{-1})$ follows the square of the magnetic form factor of Pr$^{3+}$ thereby confirming that the inelastic excitation belongs to the Pr sublattice. The second sum rule applied to the dynamic structure factor indicates only 1.6(2)~$\mu_\mathrm{B}$ evolving at the 19~meV peak compared to the 3.58~$\mu_\mathrm{B}$ for free Pr$^{3+}$, indicating that the crystal field ground state is magnetic and the missing moment is associated with the resolution limited quasi-elastic line. The magnetic order occurring in Pr in \PFA\ is counter-intuitive to the symmetry-allowed crystal field level scheme, hence, is suggestive of exchange-mediated mechanisms of ordering stemming from the magnetic ground state of the crystal field levels., Comment: 8 pages, double-column, 6 figures (accepted to J. The Seebeck effect describes the generation of an electric potential in a conducting solid exposed to a temperature gradient. Besides fundamental relevance in solid state physics, it serves as a key quantity to determine the performance of functional thermoelectric materials. In most cases, it is dominated by an energy-dependent electronic density of states at the Fermi level, in line with the prevalent efforts toward superior thermoelectrics through the engineering of electronic structure. Here, we demonstrate an alternative source for the Seebeck effect based on charge-carrier relaxation: A charge mobility that changes rapidly with temperature can result in a sizeable addition to the Seebeck coefficient. This new Seebeck source is demonstrated explicitly for Ni-doped CoSb3, where a dramatic mobility change occurs due to the crossover between two different charge-relaxation regimes. Our findings unveil the origin of pronounced features in the Seebeck coefficient of many other elusive materials characterized by a significant mobility mismatch. As the physical origin for the latter can vary greatly, our proposal provides a unifying framework for the understanding of a large panoply of thermoelectric phenomena. When utilized appropriately, this effect can also provide a novel route to the design of improved thermoelectric materials for applications in solid-state cooling or power generation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

Orthorhombic single crystals of TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 are found to exhibit spin-reorientation, magnetization reversal and weak ferromagnetism. Strong anisotropy effects are evident in the temperature dependent magnetization measurements along the three crystallographic axes a, b and c. A broad magnetic transition is visible at T_N (Fe/Mn) = 286 K due to paramagnetic to AxGyCz ordering. A sharp transition is observed at T_SR (Fe/Mn) = 28 K, which is pronounced along c axis in the form of a sharp jump in magnetization where the spins reorient to GxAyFz configuration. The negative magnetization observed below TSR Fe/Mn along c axis is explained in terms of domain wall pinning. A component of weak ferromagnetism is observed in field-scans along c-axis but below 28 K. Field-induced steps-like transitions are observed in hysteresis measurement along b axis below 28 K. It is noted that no sign of Tb-order is discernible down to 2 K. TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 could be highlighted as a potential candidate to evaluate its magneto-dielectric effects across the magnetic transitions., Comment: Accepted in J. Appl. Phys

We report our comprehensive study of physical properties of a ternary intermetallic compound PrIrSi3 investigated by dc magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), thermo-remnant magnetization M(t), ac magnetic susceptibility chi_ac(T), specific heat C_p(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A magnetic phase transition is marked by a sharp anomaly at T_tr = 12.2 K in chi(T) measured at low applied fields which is also reflected in the C_p(T) data through a weak anomaly at 12 K. An irreversibility between the zero field cooled and field cooled chi(T) data below 12.2 K and a very large relaxation time of M(t) indicates the presence of ferromagnetic correlation. The magnetic part of specific heat shows a broad Schottky-type anomaly near 40~K due to the crystal electric field (CEF) effect. An extremely small value of magnetic entropy below 12 K suggests a CEF-split singlet ground state which is confirmed from our analysis of INS data. The INS spectra show two prominent inelastic excitations at 8.5 meV and 18.5 meV that could be well accounted by a CEF model. The CEF splitting energy between the ground state singlet and the first excited doublet is found to be 92 K. Our muSR data reveal a possible magnetic ordering below 30 K which is much higher than that found from the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This could be due to the presence of short range correlations well above the long range magnetic ordering or due to the electronic changes induced by muons. The induced moment magnetism in the singlet ground state system PrIrSi3 with such a large splitting energy of 92 K is quite surprising., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

We report full-potential density functional theory (DFT)-based {\it ab initio} band structure calculations to investigate electronic structure properties of the first pnictide superconductor with a honeycomb-lattice structure: SrPtAs. As a result, electronic bands, density of states, Fermi velocities and the topology of the Fermi surface for SrPtAs are obtained. These quantities are discussed in comparison to the first available experimental data. Predictions for future measurements are provided.
