Search

Forthcoming imaging surveys will potentially increase the number of known galaxy-scale strong lenses by several orders of magnitude. For this to happen, images of tens of millions of galaxies will have to be inspected to identify potential candidates. In this context, deep learning techniques are particularly suitable for the finding patterns in large data sets, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in particular can efficiently process large volumes of images. We assess and compare the performance of three network architectures in the classification of strong lensing systems on the basis of their morphological characteristics. We train and test our models on different subsamples of a data set of forty thousand mock images, having characteristics similar to those expected in the wide survey planned with the ESA mission \Euclid, gradually including larger fractions of faint lenses. We also evaluate the importance of adding information about the colour difference between the lens and source galaxies by repeating the same training on single-band and multi-band images. Our models find samples of clear lenses with $\gtrsim 90\%$ precision and completeness, without significant differences in the performance of the three architectures. Nevertheless, when including lenses with fainter arcs in the training set, the three models' performance deteriorates with accuracy values of $\sim 0.87$ to $\sim 0.75$ depending on the model. Our analysis confirms the potential of the application of CNNs to the identification of galaxy-scale strong lenses. We suggest that specific training with separate classes of lenses might be needed for detecting the faint lenses since the addition of the colour information does not yield a significant improvement in the current analysis, with the accuracy ranging from $\sim 0.89$ to $\sim 0.78$ for the different models.

(Abridged) The Euclid mission is expected to discover thousands of z>6 galaxies in three Deep Fields, which together will cover a ~40 deg2 area. However, the limited number of Euclid bands and availability of ancillary data could make the identification of z>6 galaxies challenging. In this work, we assess the degree of contamination by intermediate-redshift galaxies (z=1-5.8) expected for z>6 galaxies within the Euclid Deep Survey. This study is based on ~176,000 real galaxies at z=1-8 in a ~0.7 deg2 area selected from the UltraVISTA ultra-deep survey, and ~96,000 mock galaxies with 25.3$\leq$H6 with Euclid data alone will be very effective, with a z>6 recovery of 91(88)% for bright (faint) galaxies. For the UltraVISTA-like bright sample, the percentage of z=1-5.8 contaminants amongst apparent z>6 galaxies as observed with Euclid alone is 18%, which is reduced to 4(13)% by including ultra-deep Rubin (Spitzer) photometry. Conversely, for the faint mock sample, the contamination fraction with Euclid alone is considerably higher at 39%, and minimized to 7% when including ultra-deep Rubin data. For UltraVISTA-like bright galaxies, we find that Euclid (I-Y)>2.8 and (Y-J)6 galaxies, although these are applicable to only 54% of the contaminants, as many have unconstrained (I-Y) colours. In the most optimistic scenario, these cuts reduce the contamination fraction to 1% whilst preserving 81% of the fiducial z>6 sample. Our Universe may feature large-scale inhomogeneities and anisotropies which cannot be explained by the standard model of cosmology, that is, the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW metric, on which the $Λ$CDM model is built, may not describe accurately observations. Currently, there is not a satisfactory understanding of the evolution of the large-scale structure on an inhomogeneous background. We start the cosmology beyond homogeneity and isotropy (BEHOMO) project and study the inhomogeneous $Λ$LTB model with the methods of numerical cosmology. Understanding the evolution of the large-scale structure is a necessary step to constrain inhomogeneous models with present and future observables and place the standard model on more solid grounds. We perform Newtonian $N$-body simulations, whose accuracy in describing the background evolution is checked against the general relativistic solution. The large-scale structure of the corresponding $Λ$CDM simulation is also validated. We obtain the first set of simulations of the $Λ$LTB model ever produced. The data products consist of 11 snapshots between redshift 0 and 3.7 for each of the 68 simulations that have been performed, together with halo catalogs and lens planes relative to 21 snapshots, between redshift 0 and 4.2, for a total of approximately 180 TB of data. We plan to study the growth of perturbations at the linear and nonlinear level, gravitational lensing, cluster abundances and proprieties. Data can be obtained upon request. Euclid is an ESA mission designed to constrain the properties of dark energy and gravity via weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. It will carry out a wide area imaging and spectroscopy survey (EWS) in visible and near-infrared, covering roughly 15,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky on six years. The wide-field telescope and instruments are optimized for pristine PSF and reduced straylight, producing very crisp images. This paper presents the building of the Euclid reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, Deep fields, Auxiliary fields for calibrations, and spacecraft movements followed by Euclid as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulate the dither pattern at pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We use up-to-date models for the sky background to define the Euclid region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage are also considered. Via purposely-built software optimized to prioritize best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability, we generate a schedule for the Auxiliary and Deep fields observations and schedule the RoI with EWS transit observations. The resulting reference survey RSD_2021A fulfills all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. Its wide survey covers 14,500 square degrees. The limiting AB magnitudes ($5\sigma$ point-like source) achieved in its footprint are estimated to be 26.2 (visible) and 24.5 (near-infrared); for spectroscopy, the H$_\alpha$ line flux limit is $2\times 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 1600 nm; and for diffuse emission the surface brightness limits are 29.8 (visible) and 28.4 (near-infrared) mag arcsec$^{-2}$., Comment: 43 pages, 51 figures, submitted to A&A

Galaxy cluster counts in bins of mass and redshift have been shown to be a competitive probe to test cosmological models. This method requires an efficient blind detection of clusters from surveys with a well-known selection function and robust mass estimates. The Euclid wide survey will cover 15000 deg$^2$ of the sky in the optical and near-infrared bands, down to magnitude 24 in the $H$-band. The resulting data will make it possible to detect a large number of galaxy clusters spanning a wide-range of masses up to redshift $\sim 2$. This paper presents the final results of the Euclid Cluster Finder Challenge (CFC). The objective of these challenges was to select the cluster detection algorithms that best meet the requirements of the Euclid mission. The final CFC included six independent detection algorithms, based on different techniques, such as photometric redshift tomography, optimal filtering, hierarchical approach, wavelet and friend-of-friends algorithms. These algorithms were blindly applied to a mock galaxy catalog with representative Euclid-like properties. The relative performance of the algorithms was assessed by matching the resulting detections to known clusters in the simulations. Several matching procedures were tested, thus making it possible to estimate the associated systematic effects on completeness to $80$% completeness for a mean purity of 80% down to masses of $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ and up to redshift $z=2$. Based on these results, two algorithms were selected to be implemented in the Euclid pipeline, the AMICO code, based on matched filtering, and the PZWav code, based on an adaptive wavelet approach. At present, 30-40 per cent of the baryons in the local Universe is still undetected. According to theoretical predictions, this gas should reside in filaments filling the large-scale structure (LSS) in the form of a Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), at temperatures of 10^5 - 10^7 K, thus emitting in the soft X-ray energies via free-free interaction and line emission from heavy elements. In this work we characterize the properties of the X-ray emission of the WHIM, and the LSS in general, focusing on the influence of different physical mechanisms, namely galactic winds (GWs), black-hole feedback and star-formation, and providing estimates of possible observational constraints. To this purpose we use a set of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations that include a self-consistent treatment of star-formation and chemical enrichment of the intergalactic medium, that allows us to follow the evolution of different metal species. We construct a set of simulated light-cones to make predictions of the emission in the 0.3-10 keV energy range. We obtain that GWs increase by a factor of 2 the emission of both galaxy clusters and WHIM. The amount of oxygen at average temperature and, consequently, the amount of expected bright Ovii and Oviii lines is increased by a factor of 3 due to GWs and by 20 per cent when assuming a top-heavy IMF. We compare our results with current observational constraints and find that the emission from faint groups and WHIM should account from half to all of the unresolved X-ray background in the 1-2 keV band., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. Our study is meant to extend our knowledge of the galaxy color and luminosity segregation in velocity space (VCS and VLS, resp.), to clusters at intermediate and high redshift. Our sample is a collection of 41 clusters in the 0.4=0.8. For the first time, we detect VLS in non-local clusters and confirm that VLS only affects the very luminous galaxies, with brighter galaxies having lower velocities. The threshold magnitude of VLS is ~m3+0.5, where m3 is the magnitude of the third brightest cluster galaxy, and current data suggest that the threshold value moves to fainter magnitudes at higher redshift. We also detect (marginal) evidence of VLS for blue galaxies. We conclude that the segregation effects, when their study is extended to distant clusters, can be important tracers of the galaxy evolution and cluster assembly and discuss the poor/no evidence of VCS at high redshift., A&A accepted, 12 pages, 10 figures

Combining cosmological SPH simulations with a previously developed Lyman Alpha production/transmission model and the Early Reionization Model (ERM, reionization ends at redshift z~7), we obtain Lyman Alpha and UV Luminosity Functions (LFs) for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) for redshifts between 5.7 and 7.6. Matching model results to observations at z~5.7 requires escape fractions of Lyman Alpha, f_alpha=0.3, and UV (non-ionizing) continuum photons, f_c=0.22, corresponding to a color excess, E(B-V)=0.15. We find that (i) f_c increases towards higher redshifts, due the decreasing mean dust content of galaxies, (ii) the evolution of f_alpha/f_c hints at the dust content of the ISM becoming progressively inhomogeneous/clumped with decreasing redshift. The clustering photoionization boost is important during the initial reionization phases but has little effect on the Lyman Alpha LF for a highly ionized IGM. Halo (stellar) masses are in the range 10.0 < \log M_h < 11.8 (8.1 < \log M_* < 10.4) with M_h \propto M_*^{0.64}. The star formation rates are between 3-120 solar masses per year, mass-weighted mean ages are greater than 20 Myr at all redshifts, while the mean stellar metallicity increases from Z=0.12 to 0.22 solar metallicity from z~7.6 to z~5.7; both age and metallicity positively correlate with stellar mass. The brightest LAEs are all characterized by large star formation rates and intermediate ages (~200 Myr), while objects in the faint end of the Lyman Alpha LF show large age and star formation rate spreads. With no more free parameters, the Spectral Energy Distributions of three LAE at z~5.7 observed by Lai et al. (2007) are well reproduced by an intermediate age (182-220 Myr) stellar population and the above E(B-V) value., 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We report the analysis of the Chandra observation of XDCP J0044.0-2033, a massive, distant (z=1.579) galaxy cluster discovered in the XDCP survey. The total exposure time of 380 ks with Chandra ACIS-S provides the deepest X-ray observation currently achieved on a massive, high redshift cluster. Extended emission from the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) is detected at a very high significance level (S/N~20) on a circular region with a 44" radius, corresponding to $R_{ext}=375$ kpc at the cluster redshift. We perform an X-ray spectral fit of the ICM emission modeling the spectrum with a single-temperature thermal mekal model. Our analysis provides a global temperature $kT=6.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}$ keV, and a iron abundance $Z_{Fe} = 0.41_{-0.26}^{+0.29}Z_{Fe_\odot}$ (error bars correspond to 1 $��$). We fit the background-subtracted surface brightness profile with a single $��$-model out to 44", finding a rather flat profile with no hints of a cool core. We derive the deprojected electron density profile and compute the ICM mass within the extraction radius $R_{ext}=375$ kpc to be $M_{ICM}(r, 42 pages, 12 Figures, ApJ in press

Magnetic fields in the intra-cluster medium of galaxy clusters have been studied in the past years through different methods. In the next years the up-coming generation of radio telescopes is going to provide new data that have the potential of setting constraints on the properties of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. Here we present zoomed-in simulations for a set of massive galaxy clusters (M_v > 10^15 M_sun/h). This is an ideal sample to study the evolution of magnetic field during the process of structure formation in detail. Turbulent motions of the gas within the ICM will manifest themselves in a macroscopic magnetic resistivity eta_m, which has to be taken explicitly into account, especially at scales below the resolution limit. We have adapted the MHD GADGET code by Dolag & Stasyszyn (2009) to include the treatment of the magnetic resistivity and for the first time we have included non-ideal MHD equations to better follow the evolution of the magnetic field within galaxy clusters. We investigate which value of the magnetic resistivity eta_m is required to match the magnetic field profile derived from radio observations. We find that a value of eta_m ~ 6 10^27 cm^2/s is necessary to recover the shape of the magnetic field profile inferred from radio observations of the Coma cluster. This value agrees well with the expected level of turbulent motions within the ICM at our resolution limit. The magnetic field profiles can be fitted by a beta-model like profile (Cavaliere & Fusco-Femiano 1976), with small dispersion of the parameters. We find also that that the temperature, density and entropy profiles of the clusters depend on the magnetic resistivity constant, having flatter profiles in the inner regions when the magnetic resistivity increases., 19 pages, 11 figures. We present forecasts on the capability of future wide-area high-sensitivity X-ray surveys of galaxy clusters to yield constraints on the parameters defining the Dark Energy (DE) equation of state (EoS). Our analysis is carried out for future X-ray surveys which have enough sensitivity to provide accurate measurements of X-ray mass proxies and Fe-line based redshifts for about 2x10^4 clusters. We base our analysis on the Fisher Matrix formalism, by combining information on the cluster number counts and power spectrum, also including, for the first time in the analysis of the large scale cluster distribution, the effect of linear redshift-space distortions (RSDs). This study is performed with the main purpose of dissecting the cosmological information provided by geometrical and growth tests, which are both included in the analysis of number counts and clustering of galaxy clusters. We compare cosmological constraints obtained by assuming different levels of prior knowledge of the parameters which define the observable-mass X-ray relation. This comparison further demonstrates the fundamental importance of having a well calibrated observable-mass relation and, most importantly, its redshift evolution. Such a calibration can be achieved only by having at least $\sim 10^3$ net photon counts for each cluster included in the survey. We show that RSDs in the power spectrum analysis carry important cosmological information also when traced with galaxy clusters and the DE FoM increases by a factor of 8. Besides confirming the potential that large cluster surveys have in constraining the nature of DE, our analysis emphasizes that a full exploitation of the cosmological information carried by such surveys requires not only a large statistic but also a robust measurement of the mass proxies and redshifts for a significant fraction of the cluster sample, derived from the same X-ray survey data., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures,published on MNRAS

We discuss the central role played by X-ray studies to reconstruct the past history of formation and evolution of supermassive Black Holes (BHs), and the role they played in shaping the properties of their host galaxies. We shortly review the progress in this field contributed by the current X-ray and multiwavelength surveys. Then, we focus on the outstanding scientific questions that have been opened by observations carried out in the last years and that represent the legacy of Chandra and XMM, as for X-ray observations, and the legacy of the SDSS, as for wide area surveys: 1) When and how did the first supermassive black holes form? 2) How does cosmic environment regulate nuclear activity (and star formation) across cosmic time? 3) What is the history of nuclear activity in a galaxy lifetime? We show that the most efficient observational strategy to address these questions is to carry out a large-area X-ray survey, reaching a sensitivity comparable to that of deep Chandra and XMM pointings, but extending over several thousands of square degrees. Such a survey can only be carried out with a Wide-Field X-ray Telescope (WFXT) with a high survey speed, due to the combination of large field of view and large effective area, i.e., grasp, and sharp PSF. We emphasize the important synergies that WFXT will have with a number of future groundbased and space telescopes, covering from the radio to the X-ray bands and discuss the immense legacy value that such a mission will have for extragalactic astronomy at large., Comment: 8 pages, ASTRO2010 decadal survey science white paper

We present a study of the effect of AGN feedback on metal enrichment and thermal properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in hydrodynamical simulations. The cosmological simulations are performed for a set of clusters using a version of the TreePM-SPH Gadget code that follows chemo-dynamical evolution by accounting for metal enrichment by different stellar populations. Besides runs not including any efficient form of energy feedback, we carry out simulations including: (i) kinetic feedback in the form of galactic winds triggered by supernova explosions; (ii) AGN feedback from gas accretion onto super-massive black holes (BHs); (iii) AGN feedback in which a 'radio mode' is included. We find that AGN feedback is able to quench star formation in the brightest cluster galaxies at z, 22 pages, 24 figures, 2 tables, to appear in MNRAS

Member galaxies within galaxy clusters nowadays can be routinely identified in cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations using methods based on identifying self bound, locally over dense substructures. However, distinguishing the central galaxy from the stellar diffuse component within clusters is notoriously difficult, and in the center it is not even clear if two distinct stellar populations exist. Here, after subtracting all member galaxies, we use the velocity distribution of the remaining stars and detect two dynamically, well-distinct stellar components within simulated galaxy clusters. These differences in the dynamics can be used to apply an un-binding procedure which leads to a spatial separation of the two components into a cD and a diffuse stellar component (DSC). Applying our new algorithm to a cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation we find that -- in line with previous studies -- these two components have clearly distinguished spatial and velocity distributions as well as different star formation histories. We show that the DSC fraction -- which can broadly be associated with the observed intra cluster light -- does not depend on the virial mass of the galaxy cluster and is much more sensitive to the formation history of the cluster. We conclude that the separation of the cD and the DSC in simulations, based on our dynamical criteria, is more physically motivated than current methods which depend on implicit assumptions on a length scale associated with the cD galaxy and therefore represent a step forward in understanding the different stellar components within galaxy clusters. We present the results from the dynamical analysis of the cluster of galaxies RX J0152-1357, which shows a complex structure in its X-ray emission, with two major clumps in the central region, and a third clump in the Eastern region. Our analysis is based on redshift data for 187 galaxies. We compute the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of galaxies, sigma_V=1322^+74_-68 kms^-1, which is significantly larger than what is expected in the case of a relaxed cluster with an observed X-ray temperature of 5-6 keV. We find evidence that this cluster is far from dynamical equilibrium, as shown by the non Gaussianity of the velocity distribution, the presence of a velocity gradient and significant substructure. Our analysis shows that the high value of sigma_V is due to the complex structure of RX J0152-1357, i.e. to the presence of three galaxy clumps of different mean velocity. Using optical data we detect a low-velocity clump (with sigma_V=300-500 kms^-1) in the central SW region and a high--velocity clump (with sigma_V sim 700 kms^-1) in the E region, well corresponding to the SW and E peaks detected in the X-ray emission. The central NE X-ray peak is associated to the main galaxy structure with a velocity which is intermediate between those of the other two clumps and sigma_V sim 900 kms^-1. The mass of the whole system within 2 Mpc is estimated to lie in the range (1.2-2.2)X10^{15} M_sun. Analytic calculations based on the two-body model indicate that the system is most likely bound, currently undergoing merging. (ABRIDGED) We analyze the X-ray properties of a sample of local and high redshift galaxy clusters extracted from a large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. This simulation has been realized using the Tree+SPH code GADGET-2 for a LambdaCDM model. In our analysis, we consider only objects with T_ew >2 keV and adopt an approach that mimics observations, associating with each measurement an error comparable with recent observations and providing best-fit results via robust techniques. Within the clusters, baryons are distributed among (i) a cold neutral phase, with a relative contribution that increases from less than 1 to 3 per cent at higher redshift, (ii) stars which contribute with about 20 per cent and (iii) the X-ray emitting plasma that contributes by 80 (76) per cent at z=0 (1) to the total baryonic budget. A depletion of the cosmic baryon fraction of ~7 (at z=0) and 5 (at z=1) per cent is measured at the virial radius, R_vir, in good agreement with adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations. We confirm that, also at redshift >0.5, power-law relations hold between gas temperature, T, bolometric luminosity, L, central entropy, S, gas mass, M_gas, and total gravitating mass, M_tot and that these relations are steeper than predicted by simple gravitational collapse. A significant, negative evolution in the L-T and L-M_tot relations and positive evolution in the S-T relation are detected at 0.5 < z < 1 in this set of simulated galaxy clusters. This is partially consistent with recent analyses of the observed properties of z>0.5 X-ray galaxy clusters. By fixing the slope to the values predicted by simple gravitational collapse, we measure at high redshift normalizations lower by 10-40 per cent in the L-T, M_tot-T, M_gas-T, f_gas-T and L-M_tot relations than the observed estimates., 13 pages, MNRAS in press

We present the analysis of the X-ray spectra of 18 distant clusters of galaxies with redshift 0.3 < z < 1.3. Most of them were observed with the Chandra satellite in long exposures ranging from 36 ks to 180 ks. For two of the z>1 clusters we also use deep XMM-Newton observations. Overall, these clusters probe the temperature range 3 =0.8 is Z =0.25 +0.04 -0.06 Zo, consistent with the local canonical metallicity value, Z ~0.3 Zo, within 1sigma confidence level. Medium and low temperature clusters (kT ~1.2 (4 clusters at z>1) we obtain a statistically significant detection of the Fe-K line only in one cluster (Z>0.10 Zo at the 90% c.l.). Combining all the current data set from Chandra and XMM at z>1, the average metallicity is measured to be = 0.21 +0.10 -0.05 Zo (1sigma error), thus suggesting no evolution of the mean iron abundance out to z~1.2., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, ApJ in press

In this paper we show preliminary results concerning the chemical and energetic enrichment of the ICM by means of supernova-driven wind models in elliptical galaxies. These models are obtained by taking into account new prescriptions about supernova remnant evolution in the interstellar medium. We find that models, which can reproduce the Fe abundance and the [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios observed in the ICM, predict that the SN energy input can provide about 0.3 keV per ICM particle. We have obtained this result by assuming that each SN explosion inject on the average into the ISM no more than 20% of its initial blast wave energy. We analyze the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS) to derive cosmological constraints from the evolution of the cluster X-ray luminosity distribution. The sample contains 103 galaxy clusters out to z=0.85 and flux-limit Flim=3 10^{-14} cgs (RDCS-3) in the [0.5-2.0] keV energy band, with a high-z extension containing four clusters at 0.901 10^{-14} cgs (RDCS-1). Model predictions for the cluster mass function are converted into the X-ray luminosity function in two steps. First we convert mass into intra-cluster gas temperature by assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Then temperature is converted into X-ray luminosity by using the most recent data on the Lx-T relation for nearby and distant clusters. The Chandra X-ray Observatory was used to obtain a 190 ks image of three high redshift galaxy clusters in one observation. The results of our analysis of these data are reported for the two z > 1 clusters in this Lynx field, including the most distant known X-ray selected cluster. Spatially-extended X-ray emission was detected from both these clusters, indicating the presence of hot gas in their intracluster media. A fit to the X-ray spectrum of RX J0849+4452, at z=1.26, yields a temperature of kT = 5.8^{+2.8}_{-1.7} keV. Using this temperature and the assumption of an isothermal sphere, the total mass of RX J0849+4452 is found to be 4.0^{+2.4}_{-1.9} X 10^{14} h_{65}^{-1} M_{\sun} within r = 1 h_{65}^{-1} Mpc. The T_x for RX J0849+4452 approximately agrees with the expectation based on its L_{bol} = 3.3^{+0.9}_{-0.5} X 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1} according to the low redshift L_x - T_x relation. We present an in-depth weak lensing analysis of the cluster MS1008 based on deep multicolor imaging obtained during the Science Verification of FORS1 at the VLT. The image quality (half arcsec seeing) and depth of the VLT images allow the shear signal to be mapped with high signal-to-noise and to be traced out to 1.2 h_50^-1 Mpc, near the edge of the 6'.8x6'.8 field of view. Using BVRI color information, as well as 81 redshifts in the field from the CNOC survey, background galaxies can be effectively separated from cluster and foreground objects. PSF distorsions are found to be moderate across the FORS images and thus easily removed. Due to the small statistical errors in the mass reconstruction, this dataset provides a testing ground where several systematic effects (e.g. mass-sheet degeneracy, redshift distribution of the background sources, cluster galaxy contamination) can be quantified. Several methods are used to remove the mass-sheet degeneracy which is found to dominate the systematic error budget. We measure a lower limit to the mass of 2.6 10^14 h_50^-1 M_sun within 1 h_50^-1 Mpc and a ``total'' mass of 5.3 10^14 h_50^-1 M_sun by fitting a softened isothermal sphere. The availability of the CNOC redshift data and X-ray observations on this cluster allow a comparison of different determinations of the mass radial profile. We find the lensing and X-ray measurements in excellent agreement, while the mass derived from the virial analysis is marginally (1-2 sigma) in agreement at radii where both methods are reliable., Comment: 15 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Using EFOSC2 at the 3.6m ESO telescope, we obtained redshifts for 68 galaxies in the field of six cluster candidates from the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS). The cluster candidates were selected in the EIS patches C and D and have estimated mean redshifts between z=0.5 and z=0.7. In the six candidate cluster fields, we identify possible systems of galaxies in the redshift space. The likelihoods of these systems are established by comparison with random resamplings of the Canada-France Redshift Surveys, and using the redshift distribution expected from Postman et al.'s luminosity function, with Poggianti's K- and evolutionary-corrections. Four of the six candidate EIS clusters are found to correspond to a real system in the redshift space, with > 95 % probability. Two of them have a mean redshift in agreement with the estimate from the matched filter algorithm, while the other two have a significantly smaller redshift. The independent analysis of the V-I vs. I color-magnitude diagrams for five of our six cluster fields, supports our conclusions based on the spectroscopic data., 2 pages. We re-estimate the angular 2-point galaxy correlation function from the Lick galaxy catalogue. We argue that the large-scale gradients observed in the Lick catalogue are dominated by real clustering and therefore they should not be subtracted prior to the estimation of the 2-p correlation function. We find that if no such correction is introduced the galaxy correlations are perfectly consistent with the those found in the APM survey. We present an analysis aimed at combining cosmological constraints from number counts of galaxy clusters identified through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, obtained with the South Pole Telescope (SPT), and from Lyman-$\alpha$ spectra obtained with the MIKE/HIRES and X-shooter spectrographs. The SPT cluster analysis relies on mass calibration based on weak lensing measurements, while the Lyman-$\alpha$ analysis is built over a suite of hydrodynamical simulations for the extraction of mock spectra. The resulting constraints exhibit a tension ($\sim 3.3\sigma$) between the low $\sigma_8$ values preferred by the low-redshift cluster data, $\sigma_8=0.74 ^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, and the higher one preferred by the high-redshift Lyman-$\alpha$ data, $\sigma_8=0.91 ^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$. We present a detailed analysis in order to understand the origin of this tension and, in particular, to establish whether it arises from systematic uncertainties related to the assumptions underlying the analyses of cluster counts and/or Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We found this tension to be robust with respect to the choice of modeling of the IGM, even when including possible systematics from unaccounted sub-Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ (DLA) and Lyman-limit systems (LLS) in the Lyman-$\alpha$ data. We conclude that to solve this tension from the SPT side would require a large bias on the cluster mass estimate, or from the Lyman-$\alpha$ side large unaccounted errors on the Lyman-$\alpha$ mean fluxes, respectively. Our results have important implications for future analyses based on cluster number counts from future large photometric surveys (e.g. Euclid and LSST) and on larger samples of high-redshift quasar spectra (e.g. DESI and WEAVE surveys). If confirmed at the much higher statistical significance reachable by such surveys, this tension could represent a significant challenge for the standard $\Lambda$CDM paradigm., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Using 324 numerically modelled galaxy clusters as provided by THE THREE HUNDRED project, we study the evolution of the kinematic properties of the stellar component of haloes on first infall. We select objects with M$_{\textrm{star}}>5\times10^{10} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ within $3R_{200}$ of the main cluster halo at $z=0$ and follow their progenitors. We find that although haloes are stripped of their dark matter and gas after entering the main cluster halo, there is practically no change in their stellar kinematics. For the vast majority of our `galaxies' -- defined as the central stellar component found within the haloes that form our sample -- their kinematic properties, as described by the fraction of ordered rotation, and their position in the specific stellar angular momentum$-$stellar mass plane $j_{\rm star}$ -- M$_{\rm star}$, are mostly unchanged by the influence of the central host cluster. However, for a small number of infalling galaxies, stellar mergers and encounters with remnant stellar cores close to the centre of the main cluster, particularly during pericentre passage, are able to spin-up their stellar component by $z=0$., 8 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

Answers to the metal production of the Universe can be found in galaxy clusters, notably within their Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM). The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the next-generation European X-ray observatory Athena (2030s) will provide the necessary leap forward in spatially-resolved spectroscopy required to disentangle the intricate mechanisms responsible for this chemical enrichment. In this paper, we investigate the future capabilities of the X-IFU in probing the hot gas within galaxy clusters. From a test sample of four clusters extracted from cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, we present comprehensive synthetic observations of these clusters at different redshifts (up to z = 2) and within the scaled radius R500 performed using the instrument simulator SIXTE. Through 100 ks exposures, we demonstrate that the X-IFU will provide spatially-resolved mapping of the ICM physical properties with little to no biases (, 22 pages, 15 figures

Recent X-ray observations of galaxy clusters show that the distribution of intra-cluster medium (ICM) metallicity is remarkably uniform in space and time. In this paper, we analyse a large sample of simulated objects, from poor groups to rich clusters, to study the dependence of the metallicity and related quantities on the mass of the systems. The simulations are performed with an improved version of the Smoothed-Particle-Hydrodynamics \texttt{GADGET-3} code and consider various astrophysical processes including radiative cooling, metal enrichment and feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGN). The scaling between the metallicity and the temperature obtained in the simulations agrees well in trend and evolution with the observational results obtained from two data samples characterised by a wide range of masses and a large redshift coverage. Modern hydrodynamical simulations offer nowadays a powerful means to trace the evolution of the X-ray properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) during the cosmological history of the hierarchical build up of galaxy clusters. In this paper we review the current status of these simulations and how their predictions fare in reproducing the most recent X-ray observations of clusters. After briefly discussing the shortcomings of the self-similar model, based on assuming that gravity only drives the evolution of the ICM, we discuss how the processes of gas cooling and non-gravitational heating are expected to bring model predictions into better agreement with observational data. We then present results from the hydrodynamical simulations, performed by different groups, and how they compare with observational data. As terms of comparison, we use X-ray scaling relations between mass, luminosity, temperature and pressure, as well as the profiles of temperature and entropy. The results of this comparison can be summarised as follows: (a) simulations, which include gas cooling, star formation and supernova feedback, are generally successful in reproducing the X-ray properties of the ICM outside the core regions; (b) simulations generally fail in reproducing the observed ``cool core'' structure, in that they have serious difficulties in regulating overcooling, thereby producing steep negative central temperature profiles. We study the properties of the diffuse light in galaxy clusters forming in a large hydrodynamical cosmological simulation of the Lambda-CDM cosmology. The simulation includes a model for radiative cooling, star formation in dense cold gas, and feedback by SN-II explosions. We select clusters having mass M>10^(14) h^(-1) Msun and study the spatial distribution of their star particles. While most stellar light is concentrated in gravitationally bound galaxies orbiting in the cluster potential, we find evidence for a substantial diffuse component, which may account for the extended halos of light observed around central cD galaxies. We find that more massive simulated clusters have a larger fraction of stars in the diffuse light than the less massive ones. The intracluster light is more centrally concentrated than the galaxy light, and the stars in the diffuse component are on average older than the stars in cluster galaxies, supporting the view that the diffuse light is not a random sampling of the stellar population in the cluster galaxies. We thus expect that at least ~10% of the stars in a cluster may be distributed as intracluster light, largely hidden thus far due to its very low surface brightness., 4 pages, 3 figures
