We present JADES JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of GN-z11, the most luminous candidate $z>10$ Lyman break galaxy in the GOODS-North field with $M_{UV}=-21.5$. We derive a redshift of $z=10.603$ (lower than previous determinations) based on multiple emission lines in our low and medium resolution spectra over $0.8-5.3 μ$m. We significantly detect the continuum and measure a blue rest-UV spectral slope of $β=-2.4$. Remarkably, we see spatially-extended Lyman-$α$ in emission (despite the highly-neutral IGM expected at this early epoch), offset 555 km s$^{-1}$ redward of the systemic redshift. From our measurements of collisionally-excited lines of both low- and high-ionization (including [O II]$\lambda3727$, [Ne III]$λ3869$ and C III]$\lambda1909$) we infer a high ionization parameter ($\log U\sim -2$). We detect the rarely-seen N IV]$\lambda1486$ and N III]$\lambda1748$ lines in both our low and medium resolution spectra, with other high ionization lines seen in the low resolution spectrum such as He II (blended with O III]) and C IV (with a possible P-Cygni profile). Based on the observed rest-UV line ratios, we cannot conclusively rule out photoionization from AGN, although the high C III]/He II and N III]/He II ratios are compatible with a star-formation explanation. If the observed emission lines are powered by star formation, then the strong N III]$\lambda1748$ observed may imply an unusually high $N/O$ abundance. Balmer emission lines (H$γ$, H$δ$) are also detected, and if powered by star formation rather than an AGN we infer a star formation rate of $\sim 20-30 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (depending on the IMF) and low dust attenuation. The rest-frame UV recombination emission line Ly-alpha can be powered by ionizing photons from young massive stars in star forming galaxies, but its ability to be resonantly scattered by neutral gas complicates its interpretation. For reionization era galaxies, a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) will scatter Ly-alpha from the line of sight, making Ly-alpha a useful probe of the neutral fraction at z>6. Here, we explore Ly-alpha in JWST/NIRSpec spectra from the ongoing GTO program JADES, which targets hundreds of galaxies in the well-studied GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields. These sources are UV-faint (-20.45.5 (as derived with optical lines) are fit with line and continuum models, in order to search for significant line emission. Through exploration of the R100 data, we find evidence for Ly-alpha in 15 sources. Additional analysis of the R1000 data from the same set of galaxies results in five additional detections. This sample allows us to place observational constraints on the fraction of galaxies with Ly-alpha emission in the redshift range 5.5, Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to A&A

We present emission line ratios from a sample of 26 Lyman break galaxies from $z\sim5.5-9.5$ with $-17.05.5$ spectra. We find that the emission line ratios exhibited by these $z\sim5.5-9.5$ galaxies occupy clearly distinct regions of line-ratio space compared to typical z~0-3 galaxies, instead being more consistent with extreme populations of lower-redshift galaxies. This is best illustrated by the [OIII]/[OII] ratio, tracing interstellar medium (ISM) ionisation, in which we observe more than half of our sample to have [OIII]/[OII]>10. Our high signal-to-noise spectra reveal more than an order of magnitude of scatter in line ratios such as [OII]/H$\beta$ and [OIII]/[OII], indicating significant diversity in the ISM conditions within the sample. We find no convincing detections of [NII] in our sample, either in individual galaxies, or a stack of all G395M/F290LP spectra. The emission line ratios observed in our sample are generally consistent with galaxies with extremely high ionisation parameters (log $U\sim-1.5$), and a range of metallicities spanning from $\sim0.1\times Z_\odot$ to higher than $\sim0.3\times Z_\odot$, suggesting we are probing low-metallicity systems undergoing periods of rapid star-formation, driving strong radiation fields. We present the properties of 16 faint Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at $z>5.8$ from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) spectroscopic data in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field/GOODS-S. These LAEs span a redshift range $z\approx5.8-8.0$ and UV magnitude range $M_{\textrm{UV}} \approx -17$ to $-20.6$, with Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW) in the range $\approx 25-350$ \AA. The detection of other rest-optical emission lines in the spectra of these LAEs enables the determination of accurate systemic redshifts and Ly$\alpha$ velocity offsets, as well as the physical and chemical composition of their stars and interstellar media. These faint LAEs are consistent with metal-poor systems with high ionization parameters, similar to the general galaxy population at $z>6$. We measure an average ionizing photon production efficiency, log($\xi_{\textrm{ion}}$/erg$^{-1}$ Hz) $\approx 25.56$ across our LAEs, which does not evolve strongly with redshift. We report an anti-correlation between Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction and velocity offset from systemic, consistent with model expectations. We further find that the strength and velocity offset of Ly$\alpha$ are not correlated with galaxy spectroscopic properties nor with $\xi_{\textrm{ion}}$. We find a decrease in Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions with redshift, indicative of decreasing sizes of ionized bubbles around LAEs at high redshifts. We use a range of galaxy properties to predict Lyman continuum escape fractions for our LAEs, finding that the ionizing photon output into the intergalactic medium from our LAEs remains roughly constant across the observed UV magnitude and Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, showing a mild increase with redshift. In the local Universe, OH megamasers (OHMs) are detected almost exclusively in infrared-luminous galaxies, with a prevalence that increases with IR luminosity, suggesting that they trace gas-rich galaxy mergers. Given the proximity of the rest frequencies of OH and the hyperfine transition of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), radio surveys to probe the cosmic evolution of HI in galaxies also offer exciting prospects for exploiting OHMs to probe the cosmic history of gas-rich mergers. Using observations for the Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) deep HI survey, we report the first untargeted detection of an OHM at $z > 0.5$, LADUMA J033046.20$-$275518.1 (nicknamed "Nkalakatha"). The host system, WISEA J033046.26$-$275518.3, is an infrared-luminous radio galaxy whose optical redshift $z \approx 0.52$ confirms the MeerKAT emission line detection as OH at a redshift $z_{\rm OH} = 0.5225 \pm 0.0001$ rather than HI at lower redshift. The detected spectral line has 18.4$σ$ peak significance, a width of $459 \pm 59\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, and an integrated luminosity of $(6.31 \pm 0.18\,{\rm [statistical]}\,\pm 0.31\,{\rm [systematic]}) \times 10^3\,L_\odot$, placing it among the most luminous OHMs known. The galaxy's far-infrared luminosity $L_{\rm FIR} = (1.576 \pm 0.013) \times 10^{12}\,L_\odot$ marks it as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy; its ratio of OH and infrared luminosities is similar to those for lower-redshift OHMs. A comparison between optical and OH redshifts offers a slight indication of an OH outflow. We present a detailed analysis of the rest-frame optical emission line ratios for three spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at $z>7.5$. The galaxies were identified in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations field SMACS J0723.3$-$7327. By quantitatively comparing Balmer and oxygen line ratios of these galaxies with various low-redshift "analogue" populations (e.g. Green Peas, Blueberries, etc.), we show that no single analogue population captures the diversity of line ratios of all three galaxies observed at $z>7.5$. We find that S06355 at $z=7.67$ and S10612 at $z=7.66$ are similar to local Green Peas and Blueberries. In contrast, S04590 at $z=8.50$ appears to be significantly different from the other two galaxies, most resembling extremely low-metallicity systems in the local Universe. Perhaps the most striking spectral feature in S04590 is the curiously high [O III] $\lambda4363$/[O III] $\lambda5007$ ratio (RO3) of $0.048$ (or $0.055$ when dust-corrected), implying either extremely high electron temperatures, $\sim3\times10^4$ K, or gas densities $>10^4\ {\rm cm^{-3}}$. Observed line ratios indicate that this galaxy is unlikely to host an AGN. Using photoionization modelling, we show that the inclusion of high-mass X-ray binaries or a high cosmic ray background in addition to a young, low-metallicity stellar population can provide the additional heating necessary to explain the observed high RO3 while remaining consistent with other observed line ratios. Recent work has shown that UV-luminous reionization-era galaxies often exhibit strong Lyman-alpha emission despite being situated at redshifts where the IGM is thought to be substantially neutral. It has been argued that this enhanced Ly$α$ transmission reflects the presence of massive galaxies in overdense regions which power large ionized bubbles. An alternative explanation is that massive galaxies shift more of their Ly$α$ profile to large velocities (relative to the systemic redshift) where the IGM damping wing absorption is reduced. Such a mass-dependent trend is seen at lower redshifts, but whether one exists at $z\sim7$ remains unclear owing to the small number of existing systemic redshift measurements in the reionization era. This is now changing with the emergence of [CII]-based redshifts from ALMA. Here we report MMT/Binospec Ly$α$ spectroscopy of eight UV-bright ($\mathrm{M_{UV}}^{}\sim-22$) galaxies at $z\simeq7$ selected from the ALMA REBELS survey. We detect Ly$α$ in 4 of 8 galaxies and use the [CII] systemic redshifts to investigate the Ly$α$ velocity profiles. The Ly$α$ lines are significantly redshifted from systemic (average velocity offset=223 km/s) and broad (FWHM$\approx$300$-$650 km/s), with two sources showing emission extending to $\approx$750 km/s. We find that the broadest Ly$α$ profiles are associated with the largest [CII] line widths, suggesting a potential link between the Ly$α$ FWHM and the dynamical mass. Since Ly$α$ photons at high velocities transmit efficiently through the $z=7$ IGM, our data suggest that velocity profiles play a significant role in boosting the Ly$α$ visibility of the most UV-luminous reionization-era galaxies., 17 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization mark the time period in the universe when stars, galaxies, and blackhole seeds first formed and the intergalactic medium changed from neutral to an ionized one. Despite substantial progress with multi-wavelength observations, astrophysical process during this time period remain some of the least understood with large uncertainties on our existing models of galaxy, blackhole, and structure formation. This white paper outlines the current state of knowledge and anticipated scientific outcomes with ground and space-based astronomical facilities in the 2020s.
