We report the results of optical spectroscopy of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant (SNR) MCSNR J0127-7332 and the mass donor Be star, 2dFS 3831, in its associated high-mass X-ray binary SXP 1062 carried out with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Using high-resolution long-slit spectra, we measured the expansion velocity of the SNR shell of \approx 140 km/s, indicating that MCSNR J0127-7332 is in the radiative phase. We found that the observed line ratios in the SNR spectrum can be understood if the local interstellar medium is ionized by 2dFS 3831 and/or OB stars around the SNR. We propose that MCSNR J0127-7332 is the result of supernova explosion within a bubble produced by the stellar wind of the supernova progenitor and that the bubble was surrounded by a massive shell at the moment of supernova explosion. We estimated the age of MCSNR J0127-7332 to be \la 10 000 yr. We found that the spectrum of 2dFS 3831 changes with orbital phase. Namely, the equivalent width of the Halpha emission line decreased by \approx 40 per cent in \approx 130 d after periastron passage of the neutron star and then almost returned to its original value in the next \approx 100 d. Also, the spectrum of 2dFS 3831 obtained closest to the periastron epoch (about three weeks after the periastron) shows a noticeable emission line of He II \lambda 4686, which disappeared in the next about two weeks. We report the results of eROSITA and NICER observations of the June 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0529.8-6556 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, along with the analysis of archival X-ray and optical data from this source. We find two anomalous features in the system's behavior. First, the pulse profile observed by NICER during maximum luminosity is similar to that observed by XMM-Newton in 2000, despite the fact that the X-ray luminosity was different by two orders of magnitude. By contrast, a modest decrease in luminosity in the 2020 observations generated a significant change in pulse profile. Second, we find that the historical optical outbursts are not strictly periodic, as would be expected if the outbursts were triggered by periastron passage, as is generally assumed. The optical peaks are also not coincident with the X-ray outbursts. We suggest that this behavior may result from a misalignment of the Be star disk and the orbital plane, which might cause changes in the timing of the passage of the neutron star through the disk as it precesses. Context. To quantitatively decode the information stored within an observed spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state and accurate radiative transfer solution schemes are required. The accuracy of the model is then typically evaluated by comparing the calculated and observed spectra. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for binary companions and 3D structures in the stellar envelopes. The enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1 constitutes a perfect example of such a complex multi-D problem. Thus far, the LB-1 system has been indirectly investigated by 1D stellar-atmosphere codes and by spectral disentangling techniques, yielding differing conclusions about the nature of the system (e.g., a B-star and black-hole binary with an accretion disc around the black hole or a stripped-star and Be-star binary system have been proposed). Aims. To improve our understanding of the LB-1 system, we directly modelled the phase-dependent Hα line profiles of this system. To this end, we developed and present a multi-purpose binary-object spectral-synthesis code in 3D (BOSS-3D). Methods. BOSS-3D calculates synthetic line profiles for a given state of the circumstellar material. The standard pz-geometry commonly used for single stars is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each involved object and by accounting for the appropriate coordinate transformations. The code is then applied to the LB-1 system, considering two main hypotheses, a binary containing a stripped star and Be star, or a B star and a black hole with a disc. Results. Comparing these two scenarios, neither model can reproduce the detailed phase-dependent shape of the Hα line profiles. A satisfactory match with the observations, however, is obtained by invoking a disc around the primary object in addition to the Be-star disc or the black-hole accretion disc. Conclusions. The developed code can be used to model synthetic line profiles for a wide variety of binary systems, ranging from transit spectra of planetary atmospheres, to post-asymptotic giant branch binaries including circumstellar and circumbinary discs and massive-star binaries with stellar winds and disc systems. For the LB-1 system, our modelling provides strong evidence that each object in the system contains a disc-like structure.

The bright and understudied classical Be star HD 6226 has exhibited multiple outbursts in the last several years during which the star grew a viscous decretion disk. We analyze 659 optical spectra of the system collected from 2017-2020, along with a UV spectrum from the Hubble Space Telescope and high cadence photometry from both TESS and the KELT survey. We find that the star has a spectral type of B2.5IIIe, with a rotation rate of 74% of critical. The star is nearly pole-on with an inclination of $13.4$ degree. We confirm the spectroscopic pulsational properties previously reported, and report on three photometric oscillations from KELT photometry. The outbursting behavior is studied with equivalent width measurements of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, and the variations in both of these can be quantitatively explained with two frequencies through a Fourier analysis. One of the frequencies for the emission outbursts is equal to the difference between two photometric oscillations, linking these pulsation modes to the mass ejection mechanism for some outbursts. During the TESS observation time period of 2019 October 7 to 2019 November 2, the star was building a disk. With a large dataset of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ spectroscopy, we are able to determine the timescales of dissipation in both of these lines, similar to past work on Be stars that has been done with optical photometry. HD 6226 is an ideal target with which to study the Be disk-evolution given its apparent periodic nature, allowing for targeted observations with other facilities in the future., Comment: 48 pages including appendices, accepted to MNRAS. We use a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code to examine the effects of a binary companion on a Be star disk for a range of disk viscosities and misalignment angles, i.e. the angle between the orbital plane and the primary's spin axis. The density structures in the disk due to the tidal interaction with the binary companion are investigated. Expanding on our previous work, the shape and density structure of density enhancements due to the binary companion are analyzed and the changes in observed interferometric features due to these orbiting enhancements are also predicted. We find that larger misalignment angles and viscosity values result in more tightly wound spiral arms with densities that fall-off more slowly with radial distance from the central star. We show that the orbital phase has very little effect on the structure of the spiral density enhancements. We demonstrate that these spiral features can be detected with an interferometer in H$\alpha$ and K-band emission. We also show that the spiral features affect the axis ratios determined by interferometry depending on the orientation of these features and the observer. For example, our simulations show that the axis ratios can vary by 20% for our co-planar binary disk system depending on the location of the disk density enhancements., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

We use a time-dependent hydrodynamic code and a non-LTE Monte Carlo code to model disk dissipation for the Be star 66 Ophiuchi. We compiled 63 years of observations from 1957 to 2020 to encompass the complete history of the growth and subsequent dissipation of the star's disk. Our models are constrained by new and archival photometry, spectroscopy and polarization observations, allowing us to model the disk dissipation event. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, we find 66 Oph is consistent with standard B2Ve stellar properties. We computed a grid of 61568 Be star disk models to constrain the density profile of the disk before dissipation using observations of the H$\alpha$ line profile and SED. We find at the onset of dissipation the disk has a base density of $2.5\times10^{-11}\ \rm{g\ cm^{-3}}$ with a radial power-law index of $n=2.6$. Our models indicate that after 21 years of disk dissipation 66 Oph's outer disk remained present and bright in the radio. We find an isothermal disk with constant viscosity with an $\alpha = 0.4$ and an outer disk radius of $\sim$115 stellar radii best reproduces the rate of 66 Oph's disk dissipation. We determined the interstellar polarization in the direction of the star in the V-band is $p=0.63 \pm 0.02\%$ with a polarization position angle of $\theta_{IS}\approx85.7 \pm 0.7^\circ$. Using the Stokes QU diagram, we find the intrinsic polarization position angle of 66 Oph's disk is $\theta_{int}\approx98 \pm 3^\circ$., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

The frequency-dependent periodic active window of the fast radio burst FRB 180916.J0158+65 (FRB 180916B) was observed recently. In this Letter, we propose that a Be/X-ray binary (BeXRB) system, which is composed of a neutron star (NS) and a Be star with a circumstellar disk, might be the source of a repeating FRB with periodic activities, and apply this model to explain the activity window of FRB 180916B. The interaction between the NS magnetosphere and the accreted material results in evolution of the spin period and the centrifugal force of the NS, leading to the change of the stress in the NS crust. When the stress of the crust reaches the critical value, a starquake occurs and further produces FRBs. The interval between starquakes is estimated to be a few days that is smaller than the active window of FRB 180916B. When the NS moves out of the disk of the Be star, the interval between starquakes becomes much longer than the orbital period, which corresponds to the non-active phase. In this model, due to the absorption of the disk of the Be star, a frequency-dependent active window would appear for the FRBs, which is consistent with the observed properties of FRB 180916B. And the contribution of dispersion measure (DM) from the disk of the Be star is small. PSR B1259-63 is a gamma-ray binary system hosting a radio pulsar orbiting around a O9.5Ve star, LS 2883, with a period of ∼3.4 years. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the LS 2883 outflow leads to unpulsed broadband emission in the radio, X-ray, GeV, and TeV domains. One of the most unusual features of the system is an outburst of GeV energies around the periastron, during which the energy release substantially exceeds the spin down luminosity under the assumption of the isotropic emission. In this paper, we present the first results of a recent multi-wavelength campaign (radio, optical, and X-ray bands) accompanied by the analysis of publicly available GeV Fermi/LAT data. The campaign covered a period of more than 100 days around the 2021 periastron and revealed substantial differences from previously observed passages. We report a major delay of the GeV flare, weaker X-ray flux during the peaks, which are typically attributed to the times when the pulsar crosses the disk, and the appearance of a third X-ray peak never observed before. We argue that these features are consistent with the emission cone model proposed by us previously, in the case of a sparser and clumpier disk of the Be star.

We study the formation and the kinematic evolution of the early type Herbig Be star IL Cep and its environment. The young star is a member of the Cep OB3 association, at a distance of 798$\pm$9 pc, and has a "cavity" associated with it. We found that the B0V star HD 216658, which is astrometrically associated with IL Cep, is at the center of the cavity. From the evaluation of various pressure components created by HD 216658, it is established that the star is capable of creating the cavity. We identified 79 co-moving stars of IL Cep at 2 pc radius from the analysis of {\textit Gaia} EDR3 astrometry. The transverse velocity analysis of the co-moving stars shows that they belong to two different populations associated with IL Cep and HD 216658, respectively. Further analysis confirms that all the stars in the IL Cep population are mostly coeval ($\sim$ 0.1 Myr). Infrared photometry revealed that there are 26 Class II objects among the co-moving stars. The stars without circumstellar disk (Class III) are 65\% of all the co-moving stars. There are 9 intense H$\alpha$ emission candidates identified among the co-moving stars using IPHAS H$\alpha$ narrow-band photometry. The dendrogram analysis on the Hydrogen column density map identified 11 molecular clump structures on the expanding cavity around IL Cep, making it an active star-forming region. Be stars are rapidly rotating B stars with Balmer emission lines that indicate the presence of a Keplerian, rotationally supported, circumstellar gas disc. Current disc models, referred to as "decretion discs", make use of the zero torque inner boundary condition typically applied to accretion discs, with the 'decretion' modelled by adding mass to the disc at a radius of about two per cent larger than the inner disc boundary. We point out that, in this model, the rates at which mass and energy need to be added to the disc are implausibly large. What is required is that the disc has not only a source of mass but also a continuing source of angular momentum. We argue that the disc evolution may be more physically modelled by application of the non-zero torque inner boundary condition of Nixon & Pringle (2020), which determines the torque applied at the boundary as a fraction of the advected angular momentum flux there and approaches the accretion and decretion disc cases in the appropriate limits. We provide supporting arguments for the suggestion that the origin of the disc material is small-scale magnetic flaring events on the stellar surface, which, when combined with rapid rotation, can provide sufficient mass to form, and sufficient angular momentum to maintain, a Keplerian Be star disc. We discuss the origin of such small-scale magnetic fields in radiative stars with differential rotation. We conclude that small-scale magnetic fields on the stellar surface, may be able to provide the necessary mass flux and the necessary time-dependent torque on the disc inner regions to drive the observed disc evolution., 6 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

LB-1 was originally suggested to harbour a very massive ($ \sim 70 M_\odot $) black hole, but was recently suggested to be a post-mass transfer binary containing a Be star and a helium (He) star. In this paper, we use the binary population synthesis method to simulate the potential population of the Be$ - $He binaries in the Milky Way. Mass transfer process during the progenitor binary evolution plays a vital role in determining the possible properties of the Be$ - $He binary population. By constructing a range of physical models with significantly different mass-transfer efficiencies, we obtain the predicted distributions at the current epoch of the component masses and the orbital periods for the Be$ - $He binaries. In particular, we show that, LB-1 very likely has evolved through non-conservative mass transfer if it is indeed a Be$ - $He system. We estimate that there are more than $ 10^{3} $ Be$ - $He binaries with V-band apparent magnitudes brighter than LB-1., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ

HR 6819 was recently proposed to be a triple system consisting of an inner B-type giant + black hole binary with an orbital period of 40d and an outer Be tertiary. This interpretation is mainly based on two inferences: that the emission attributed to the outer Be star is stationary, and that the inner star, which is used as mass calibrator for the black hole, is a B-type giant. We re-investigate the properties of HR 6819 by spectral disentangling and an atmosphere analysis of the disentangled spectra to search for a possibly simpler alternative explanation for HR 6819. Disentangling implies that the Be component is not a static tertiary, but rather a component of the binary in the 40-d orbit. The inferred radial velocity amplitudes imply an extreme mass ratio of M_2/M_1 = 15 +/- 3. We infer spectroscopic masses of 0.4$^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ Msun and 6$^{+5}_{-3}$ Msun for the primary and secondary, which agree well with the dynamical masses for an inclination of i = 32 deg. This indicates that the primary might be a stripped star rather than a B-type giant. Evolutionary modelling suggests that a possible progenitor system would be a tight (P_i ~ 2d) B+B binary system that experienced conservative mass transfer. While the observed nitrogen enrichment of the primary conforms with the predictions of the evolutionary models, we find no indications for the predicted He enrichment. We suggest that HR 6819 is a binary system consisting of a stripped B-type primary and a rapidly-rotating Be star that formed from a previous mass-transfer event. In the framework of this interpretation, HR 6819 does not contain a black hole. We confirmed the binary nature of the Be star 7~Vul, derived a~more accurate spectroscopic orbit with an orbital period of (69.4212+/-0.0034) d, and improved the knowledge of the basic physical elements of the system. Analyzing available photometry and the strength of the \ha emission, we also document the long-term spectral variations of the Be primary. In addition, we confirmed rapid light changes with a~period of 0.5592 d, which is comparable to the expected rotational period of the Be primary, but note that its amplitude and possibly its period vary with time. We were able to disentangle only the He I 6678 A line of the secondary, which could support our tentative conclusion that the secondary appears to be a hot subdwarf. A search for this object in high-dispersion far-UV spectra could provide confirmation. Probable masses of the binary components are ($6\pm1$)~Mnom \ and ($0.6\pm0.1$)~Mnom. If the presence of a hot subdwarf is firmly confirmed, 7 Vul might be identified as a rare object with a B4-B5 primary; all Be + hot subdwarf systems found so far contain B0-B3 primaries., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report the discovery of a low-mass stellar companion around the young Herbig Be star MWC 297. We performed multi-epoch high-contrast imaging in the near infrared (NIR) with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument. The companion is found at projected separation of 244.7$\pm$13.2 au and a position angle of 176.4$\pm$0.1 deg. The large separation supports formation via gravitational instability. From the spectrum, we estimate a mass of 0.1-0.5 M$_{\odot}$, the range conveying uncertainties in the extinction of the companion and in evolutionary models at young ages. The orbit coincides with a gap in the dust disk inferred from the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). The young age ($\lesssim$ 1 Myr) and mass ratio with the central star ($\sim 0.01$) makes the companion comparable to PDS 70~b, suggesting a relation between formation scenarios and disk dynamics., Comment: 4 figures

HR 6819 is a bright ($V=5.36$), blue star recently proposed to be a triple containing a detached black hole (BH). We show that the system is a binary and does not contain a BH. Using spectral decomposition, we disentangle the observed composite spectra into two components: a rapidly rotating Be star and a slowly rotating B star with low surface gravity $(\log g \approx 2.75)$. Both stars show periodic radial velocity (RV) variability, but the RV semi-amplitude of the B star's orbit is $K_{\rm B}= (62.7 \pm 1)\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, while that of the Be star is only $K_{\rm Be} = (4.5\pm 2)\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$. This implies that the B star is less massive by at least a factor of 10. The surface abundances of the B star bear imprints of CNO burning. We argue that the B star is a bloated, recently stripped helium star with mass $\approx 0.5\,M_{\odot}$ that is currently contracting to become a hot subdwarf. The orbital motion of the Be star obviates the need for a BH to explain the B star's motion. A stripped-star model reproduces the observed luminosity of the system, while a normal star with the B star's temperature and gravity would be more than 10 times too luminous. HR 6819 and the binary LB-1 probably formed through similar channels. We use MESA models to investigate their evolutionary history, finding that they likely formed from intermediate-mass ($3-7\,M_{\odot}$) primaries stripped by slightly lower-mass secondaries and are progenitors to Be + sdOB binaries such as $\phi$ Persei. The lifetime of their current evolutionary phase is on average $2\times 10^5$ years, of order half a percent of the total lifetime of the Be phase. This implies that many Be stars have hot subdwarf and white dwarf companions, and that a substantial fraction ($20-100\%$) of field Be stars form through accretion of material from a binary companion., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. We present a detailed analysis of the extended structure detected around the young and close-by Herbig Ae/Be star RCrA. This is a young triple system with an intermediate mass central binary whose separation is of the order of a few tens of the radii of the individual components, and an M-star companion at about 30 au. Our aim is to understand the nature of the extended structure by means of combining integral-field and high-resolution spectroscopy. We conducted the analysis based on FEROS archival optical spectroscopy data and adaptive optics images and integral-field spectra obtained with SINFONI and SPHERE at the VLT. The observations reveal a complex extended structure that is composed of at least two components: a non-uniform wide cavity whose walls are detected in continuum emission up to 400~au, and a collimated wiggling-jet detected in the emission lines of Helium and Hydrogen. Moreover, the presence of [FeII] emission projected close to the cavity walls suggests the presence of a slower moving wind, most likely a disk wind. The multiple components of the optical forbidden lines also indicate the presence of a high-velocity jet co-existing with a slow wind. We constructed a geometrical model of the collimated jet flowing within the cavity using intensity and velocity maps, finding that its wiggling is consistent with the orbital period of the central binary. The cavity and the jet do not share the same position angle, suggesting that the jet is itself experiencing a precession motion possibly due to the wide M-dwarf companion. We propose a scenario that closely agrees with the general expectation of a magneto-centrifugal-launched jet. A majority of massive stars are part of binary systems, a large fraction of which will inevitably interact during their lives. Binary-interaction products (BiPs), i.e. stars affected by such interaction, are expected to be commonly present in stellar populations. BiPs are thus a crucial ingredient in the understanding of stellar evolution. We aim to identify and characterize a statistically significant sample of BiPs by studying clusters of 10-40 Myr, an age at which binary population models predict the abundance of BiPs to be highest. One example of such a cluster is NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Using MUSE WFM-AO observations of NGC 330, we resolve the dense cluster core for the first time and are able to extract spectra of its entire massive star population. We develop an automated spectral classification scheme based on the equivalent widths of spectral lines in the red part of the spectrum. We characterize the massive star content of the core of NGC 330 which contains more than 200 B stars, 2 O stars, 6 A-type supergiants and 11 red supergiants. We find a lower limit on the Be star fraction of $32 \pm 3\%$ in the whole sample. It increases to at least $46 \pm 10\%$ when only considering stars brighter than V=17 mag. We estimate an age of the cluster core between 35 and 40 Myr and a total cluster mass of $88^{+17}_{-18} \times 10^3 M_{\odot}$. We find that the population in the cluster core is different than the population in the outskirts: while the stellar content in the core appears to be older than the stars in the outskirts, the Be star fraction and the observed binary fraction are significantly higher. The tidal interaction of a Be star with a binary companion forms two spiral arms that cause orbital modulation of the Be disc structure. The aim of this work is to identify observables in which this modulation is apparent. The structure of a Be disc in a coplanar circular binary system is computed with a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code, and a radiation transfer code calculates the spectral energy distribution. Line depolarisation was confirmed, with polarisation profiles nearly reverse to emission-line profiles. The continuum flux maximizes for pole-on discs, but photometric variability maximizes for edge-on discs. The linear polarisation exhibits one or two maxima per orbital cycle. While polarisation variability in visible passbands is important only at low inclinations, infrared bands may demonstrate high orbital variability even at large inclinations. More evident is the modulation in the polarisation angle (PA) for low inclinations. The latter can be used to track azimuthal asymmetries for pole-on discs, where the spectroscopic variability in the violet-to-red (V/R) emission-component ratio disappears. PA reversals coincide with phases where V/R=1, tracking lines of sight directed towards regions where the approaching and receding arms overlap. Continuum flux and polarisation are mostly in phase for neighbouring wavelength regions. It is suggested that studies of non-symmetric discs distorted by tidal forces from a secondary star may be used to study disc variabilities of other origins., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

HD163296 is a Herbig Ae/Be star known to host a protoplanetary disk with a ringed structure. To explain the disk features, previous works proposed the presence of planets embedded into the disk. We have observed HD163296 with the near-infrared (NIR) branch of SPHERE composed by IRDIS and IFS with the aim to put tight constraints on the presence of substellar companions around this star. Despite the low rotation of the field of view during our observation we were able to put upper mass limits of few M_Jup around this object. These limits do not allow to give any definitive conclusion about the planets proposed through the disk characteristics. On the other hand, our results seem to exclude the presence of the only candidate proposed until now using direct imaging in the NIR even if some caution has to be taken considered the different wavelength bands of the two observations., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 11 pages, 7 figures

As the largest population of high mass X-ray binaries, Be/X-ray binaries provide an excellent laboratory to investigate the extreme physics of neutron stars. It is generally accepted that Be stars possess a circumstellar disc, providing an additional source of accretion to the stellar winds present around young hot stars. Interaction between the neutron star and the disc is often the dominant accretion mechanism. A large amount of work has gone into modelling the properties of these circumstellar discs, allowing for the explanation of a number of observable phenomena. In this paper, smoothed particle hydroynamics simulations are performed whilst varying the model parameters (orbital period, eccentricity, the mass ejection rate of the Be star and the viscosity and orientation of the disc). The relationships between the model parameters and the disc's characteristics (base gas density, the accretion rate of the neutron star and the disc's size) are presented. The observational evidence for a dependency of the size of the Be star's circumstellar disc on the orbital period (and semi-major axis) is supported by the simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. Rapid rotation is a fundamental characteristic of classical Be stars and a crucial property allowing for the formation of their circumstellar disks. Past evolution in a mass and angular momentum transferring binary system offers a plausible solution to how Be stars attained their fast rotation. Although the subdwarf remnants of mass donors in such systems should exist in abundance, only a few have been confirmed due to tight observational constraints. An indirect method of detecting otherwise hidden companions is offered by their effect on the outer parts of Be star disks, which are expected to be disrupted or truncated. In the context of the IR and radio continuum excess radiation originating in the disk, the disk truncation can be revealed by a turndown in the spectral energy distribution due to reduced radio flux levels. In this work we search for signs of spectral turndown in a sample of 57 classical Be stars with radio data, which include new data for 23 stars and the longest wavelength detections so far ($\lambda \approx$ 10\,cm) for 2 stars. We confidently detect the turndown for all 26 stars with sufficient data coverage (20 of which are not known to have close binary companions). For the remaining 31 stars, data are inconclusive as to whether the turndown is present or not. The analysis suggests that many if not all Be stars have close companions influencing their outer disks. If confirmed to be subdwarf companions, the mass transfer spin-up scenario might explain the existence of the vast majority of classical Be stars.

We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the binary system containing the pulsar PSR B1259-63 orbiting around a Be star LS 2883 after the 2017 periastron passage. We detected radio continuum emission from the binary system in the millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths for the first time. At Band 3 (97 GHz), the flux 84 days after the periastron is almost the same as that 71 days after the periastron. Although the binary system showed intense GeV gamma-ray flares during our observations, the Band 3 flux did not indicate any time correlation with them. The Band 3 fluxes are consistent with an extrapolation of the radio spectrum at lower frequencies. Assuming that it is synchrotron emission, we constrain magnetic fields ($\lesssim 0.6$ G) and the high-energy cutoff of the electrons ($\gamma \gtrsim 360$). The flux at Band 7 (343 GHz) 69 days after the periastron shows a significant excess from the extrapolation of the radio spectrum at lower frequencies. The flux may be associated with the circumstellar disk around the Be star. We also present the results of Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations at 94 GHz for the 2014 periastron passage, which show that the radio spectrum was relatively soft when the pulsar passed the disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ Letter

We present analysis of commissioning $M-$band data acquired with the infrared echelle spectrograph (iSHELL) on {\it NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility}. In this paper we describe the delivered performance of the instrument for these $M-$band observations and the data reduction process. The feasibility of using iSHELL for spectro-astrometry is tested on the Herbig Ae/Be star HD~179218 and we show that sub-milliarcsecond fidelity is achievable., Comment: Accepted to PASP

The nearby Herbig Be star HD100546 is known to be a laboratory for the study of protoplanets and their relation with the circumstellar disk that is carved by at least 2 gaps. We observed the HD100546 environment with high contrast imaging exploiting several different observing modes of SPHERE, including datasets with/without coronagraphs, dual band imaging, integral field spectroscopy and polarimetry. The picture emerging from these different data sets is complex. Flux-conservative algorithms images clearly show the disk up to 200au. More aggressive algorithms reveal several rings and warped arms overlapping the main disk. The bright parts of this ring lie at considerable height over the disk mid-plane at about 30au. Our images demonstrate that the brightest wings close to the star in the near side of the disk are a unique structure, corresponding to the outer edge of the intermediate disk at ~40au. Modeling of the scattered light from the disk with a geometrical algorithm reveals that a moderately thin structure can well reproduce the light distribution in the flux-conservative images. We suggest that the gap between 44 and 113 au span between the 1:2 and 3:2 resonance orbits of a massive body located at ~70au that might coincide with the candidate planet HD100546b detected with previous thermal IR observations. In this picture, the two wings can be the near side of a ring formed by disk material brought out of the disk at the 1:2 resonance with the same massive object. While we find no clear evidence confirming detection of the planet candidate HD100546c in our data, we find a diffuse emission close to the expected position of HD100546b. This source can be described as an extremely reddened substellar object surrounded by a dust cloud or its circumplanetary disk. Three periastron passages of the PSR B1259$-$63/LS 2883 binary system, consisting of a 48 ms rotation-powered pulsar and a $\sim30$ M$_{\odot}$ Be star, have been observed by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, in 2010, 2014, and 2017. During the most-recent periastron passage, sustained low-level gamma-ray emission was observed over a $\sim3$-week long interval immediately after periastron, which was followed by an interval of no emission. Sporadic flares were detected starting 40 days post-periastron and lasted approximately 50 days, during which the emission displayed significant spectral curvature, variability on timescales as short as 1.5 minutes, and peak flux levels well in excess of the pulsar spin-down power. By contrast, during the 2010 and 2014 periastron passages, significant gamma-ray emission was not observed with the LAT until 30 and 32 days post-periastron, respectively. The previous flares did not exhibit spectral curvature, showed no short term variability, and did not exceed the pulsar spin-down power. The high flux and short timescales observed in 2017 suggest significant beaming of the emission is required and constrain the size of the emission region. The flares occur long enough after periastron that the neutron star should already have passed through the extended disk-like outflow, thus constraining options for target material and seed photon sources for inverse Compton models., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (2 July 2018), v2 matches accepted version

We report on observations of the pulsar / Be star binary system PSR J2032+4127 / MT91 213 in the energy range between 100 GeV and 20 TeV with the VERITAS and MAGIC imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays. The binary orbit has a period of approximately 50 years, with the most recent periastron occurring on 2017 November 13. Our observations span from 18 months prior to periastron to one month after. A new, point-like, gamma-ray source is detected, coincident with the location of PSR J2032+4127 / MT91 213. The gamma-ray light curve and spectrum are well-characterized over the periastron passage. The flux is variable over at least an order of magnitude, peaking at periastron, thus providing a firm association of the TeV source with the pulsar / Be star system. Observations prior to periastron show a cutoff in the spectrum at an energy around 0.5 TeV. This result adds a new member to the small population of known TeV binaries, and it identifies only the second source of this class in which the nature and properties of the compact object are firmly established. We compare the gamma-ray results with the light curve measured with the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board the Neil Gehrels \textit{Swift} Observatory and with the predictions of recent theoretical models of the system. We conclude that significant revision of the models is required to explain the details of the emission we have observed, and we discuss the relationship between the binary system and the overlapping steady extended source, TeV J2032+4130., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. In this work, we have studied the variable stars in the young open cluster NGC 1893 based on a multi-year photometric survey covering a sky area around the cluster up to $31' \times 31'$ wide. More than 23\,000 images in the $V$ band taken from January 2008 to February 2017 with different telescopes, complemented with 90 images in the $B$ band in 2014 and 2017, were reduced, and light curves were derived in $V$ for 5653 stars. By analyzing these light curves, we detected 147 variable stars (85 of them being new discoveries), including 110 periodic variables, 15 eclipsing binaries and 22 non-periodic variables. Proper motions, radial velocities, color-magnitude and two-color diagrams were used to identify the cluster membership of these variable stars, resulting in 84 members. Periodic variable members were then classified into different variability types, mainly according to their magnitudes and to their periods of variability, as well as to their positions in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for the early-type stars. As a result, among main-sequence periodic variable members, we identified five $\beta$ Cep candidates, seven slowly pulsating B-type candidates, and thirteen fast-rotating pulsating B-type (FaRPB) candidates (one of which is a confirmed classical Be star). While most of the FaRPB stars display properties similar to the ones discovered in NGC 3766 by Mowlavi et al. (2013), five of them have periods below 0.1~d, contrary to expectations. Additional observations, including spectroscopic, are called for to further characterize these stars. IGR J06074+2205 is a poorly studied X-ray source with a Be star companion. It has been proposed to belong to the group of Be/X-ray binaries. In Be/X-ray binaries, accretion onto the neutron star occurs via the transfer of material from the Be star's circumstellar disk. Thus, in the absence of the disk, no X-ray should be detected. The main goal of this work is to study the quiescent X-ray emission of IGR J06074+2205 during a disk-loss episode. We show that at the time of the XMM-Newton observation the decretion disk around the Be star had vanished. Still, accretion appears as the source of energy that powers the high-energy radiation in IGR J06074+2205. We report the discovery of X-ray pulsations with a pulse period of 373.2 s and a pulse fraction of ~50%. The $0.4-12$ keV spectrum is well described by an absorbed power law and blackbody components with the best fitting parameters: $N_{\rm H}=(6.2\pm0.5) \times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, $kT_{\rm bb}=1.16\pm0.03$ keV, and $\Gamma=1.5\pm0.1$ The absorbed X-ray luminosity is $L_{\rm X}=1.4 \times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ assuming a distance of 4.5 kpc. The detection of X-ray pulsations confirms the nature of IGR J06074+2205 as a Be/X-ray binary. We discuss various scenarios to explain the quiescent X-ray emission of this pulsar. We rule out cooling of the neutron star surface and magnetospheric emission and conclude that accretion is the most likely scenario. © ESO, 2017. Aims. We search for runaway former companions of the progenitors of nearby Galactic core-collapse supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS). Methods. We look for candidates among a sample of ten SNRs with distances 2kpc, taking astrometry and G magnitude from TGAS and B,V magnitudes from the AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey (APASS). A simple method of tracking back stars and finding the closest point to the SNR centre is shown to have several failings when ranking candidates. In particular, it neglects our expectation that massive stars preferentially have massive companions. We evolve a grid of binary stars to exploit these covariances in the distribution of runaway star properties in colour - magnitude - ejection velocity space. We construct an analytic model which predicts the properties of a runaway star, in which the model paramet ers are the location in the grid of progenitor binaries and the properties of the SNR. Using nested sampling we calculate the Bayesian evidence for each candidate to be the runaway and simultaneously constrain the properties of that runaway and of the SNR itself. Results. We identify four likely runaway companions of the Cygnus Loop (G074.0-08.5), HB 21 (G089.0+ 04.7), S147 (G180.0+ 01.7) and the Monoceros Loop (G205.5+ 00.5). HD 37424 has previously been suggested as the companion of S147, however the other three stars are new candidates. The favoured companion of HB 21 is the Be star BD+50 3188 whose emission-line features could be explained by pre-supernova mass transfer from the primary. There is a small probability that the 2M candidate runaway TYC 2688-1556-1 associated with the Cygnus Loop is a hypervelocity star. If the Monoceros Loop is related to the on-going star formation in the Mon OB2 association, the progenitor of the Monoceros Loop is required to be more massive than 40M which is in tension with the posterior for our candidate runaway star HD 261393., DPB is grateful to the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for providing Ph.D. funding. Photospheric nitrogen abundances for a sample of 26 Be stars and 16 normal B stars were found using high-resolution spectra from the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) spectroscopic survey. Nitrogen abundances were obtained using non-LTE equivalent widths and line profiles, and Monte Carlo simulation was used to determine the error bounds of the measured nitrogen abundances due to uncertainties in the adopted stellar parameters, continuum normalization, and atomic data. In addition, the effects of the gravitational darkening and disk contamination on the measured Be star nitrogen abundances were investigated. About one third of the sample Be stars and half of the normal B-type stars have nitrogen enrichments that may be due to rotational mixing in these rapidly rotating objects. Corrections for gravitational darkening and disk contamination do not significantly change the overall results for the Be star sample. The average nitrogen abundance of the B and Be star samples coincide with the solar abundance, although the dispersion in the nitrogen abundances is much larger in the Be star sample. The Be star sample also has a significant fraction of sub-solar nitrogen abundance objects which are not present in significant numbers in the B star sample. In this paper we present results of spectroscopic analysis of the H? line profile of the Be star 60 Cygni. We present time evolution of the equivalent width of the H? line profiles during years 1992 - 2016 and V=R variation during years 1995 - 2016. We analyzed data from Ond?ejov Observatory and from BeSS Database. The circumstellar disk of the star was present twice during years 1992 - 2016 and the second cycle shows stronger emission activity. We found out that the formation of the disk takes longer time than the disk extinction (the extinction is much steeper than the formation) and that there is no evident period of changes in the V=R variation.

LSI +61 303 is one of the few X-ray binaries with a Be star companion from which radio, X-rays and high-energy gamma-ray (GeV and TeV) emission have been observed. The nature of the high energy activity of the system is not yet fully understood, but it is widely believed that it is generated due to the interaction of the relativistic electrons leaving the compact object with the photons and non-relativistic wind of the Be star. The superorbital variability of the system has been observed in the radio, optical and X-ray domains and could be due to the cyclic change of the Be star disk size. In this paper we systematically review all publicly available data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift observatories in order to measure the absorption profile of the circumstellar Be disk as a function of orbital and superorbital phases. We also discuss short-term variability of the system, found during the analysis and its implications for the understanding of the physical processes in this system., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We present new data of the protoplanetary disc surrounding the Herbig Ae/Be star HD 169142 obtained in the very broad-band (VBB) with the Zurich imaging polarimeter (ZIMPOL), a sub-system of the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument (SPHERE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Our Polarimetric Differential Imaging (PDI) observations probe the disc as close as 0.03" (3.5au) to the star and are able to trace the disc out to ~1.08" (~126au). We find an inner hole, a bright ring bearing substructures around 0.18" (21au), and an elliptically shaped gap stretching from 0.25" to 0.47" (29-55au). Outside of 0.47", the surface brightness drops off, discontinued only by a narrow annular brightness minimum at ~0.63"-0.74" (74-87au). These observations confirm features found in less-well resolved data as well as reveal yet undetected indications for planet-disc interactions, such as small-scale structures, star-disk offsets, and potentially moving shadows., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of a decade of X-ray observations of the gamma-ray loud binary HESS J0632+057, and interpret the available broadband data in view of the system geometry and emission mechanisms. We have performed an analysis of all X-ray data available to date from Swift, XMM-Newton, Chandra, NuSTAR and Suzaku. We refine the orbital period of the system to be $316.8^{+2.6}_{-1.4}$~d (95% c.l.), consistent with previous studies but measured with significantly better accuracy. We report on a hydrogen column density and spectral slope variation along the orbit. We argue that the observed variability can be explained within an "inclined disk" model in which the orbit of the compact object is inclined to the disk of the Be star. We show that the observed X-ray to TeV emission can originate from a broken cut-off power-law population of electrons and describe a way in which future X-ray/TeV observations can distinguish between the proposed model and the alternative flip-flop emission scenario of this system., Comment: to match accepted version

We present the results of our monitoring program to study the long-term variability of the Halpha line in high-mass X-ray binaries. We have carried out the most complete optical spectroscopic study of the global properties of high-mass X-ray binaries so far with the analysis of more than 1100 spectra of 20 sources. Our aim is to characterise the optical variability timescales and study the interaction between the neutron star and the accreting material. Our results can be summarised as follows: i) we find that Be/X-ray binaries with narrow orbits are more variable than systems with long orbital periods, ii) we show that a Keplerian distribution of the gas particles provides a good description of the disks in Be/X-ray binaries, as it does in classical Be stars, iii) a decrease in the Halpha equivalent width is generally observed after major X-ray outbursts, iv) we confirm that the Halpha equivalent width correlates with disk radius, v) while systems with supergiant companions display, multi-structured profiles, most of the Be/X-ray binaries show at some epoch double-peak asymmetric profiles, indicating that density inhomogeneities is a common property in the disk of Be/X-ray binaries, vi) the profile variability (V/R ratio) timescales are shorter and the Halpha equivalent width are smaller in Be/X-ray binaries than in isolated Be stars, and vii) we provide new evidence that the disk in Be/X-ray binaries is on average denser than in classical Be stars., Comment: new version after language editting and proofs. We present a study of the wind launching region of the Herbig Be star HD 58647 using high angular (lambda/2B=0.003") and high spectral (R=12000) resolution interferometric VLTI-AMBER observations of the near-infrared hydrogen emission line, Br-gamma. The star displays double peaks in both Br-gamma line profile and wavelength-dependent visibilities. The wavelength-dependent differential phases show S-shaped variations around the line centre. The visibility level increases in the line (by ~0.1) at the longest projected baseline (88 m), indicating that the size of the line emission region is smaller than the size of the K-band continuum-emitting region, which is expected to arise near the dust sublimation radius of the accretion disc. The data have been analysed using radiative transfer models to probe the geometry, size and physical properties of the wind that is emitting Br-gamma. We find that a model with a small magnetosphere and a disc wind with its inner radius located just outside of the magnetosphere can well reproduce the observed Br-gamma profile, wavelength-dependent visibilities, differential and closure phases, simultaneously. The mass-accretion and mass-loss rates adopted for the model are Mdot_a = 3.5 x 10^{-7} Msun/yr and Mdot_dw = 4.5 x 10^{-8} Msun/yr, respectively (Mdot_dw/Mdot_a =0.13). Consequently, about 60 per cent of the angular momentum loss rate required for a steady accretion with the measured accretion rate is provide by the disc wind. Context. Be/X-ray binaries represent the main group of high-mass X-ray binaries. The determination of the astrophysical parameters of the counterparts of these high-energy sources is important for the study of X-ray binary populations in our Galaxy. X-ray observations suggest that SAX J2239.3+6116 is a Be/X-ray binary. However, little is known about the astrophysical parameters of its massive companion. Aims. The main goal of this work is to perform a detailed study of the optical variability of the Be/X-ray binary SAX J2239.3+6116. Methods. We obtained multi-colour BVRI photometry and polarimetry and 4000−7000 A spectroscopy. The 4000–5000 A spectra allowed us to determine the spectral type and projected rotational velocity of the optical companion; the 6000−7000 A spectra, together with the photometric magnitudes, were used to derive the colour excess E (B −V ), estimate the distance, and to study the variability of the Hα line. Results. The optical counterpart to SAX J2239.3+6116 is a V = 14.8 B0Ve star located at a distance of ~4.9 kpc. The interstellar reddening in the direction of the source is E (B −V ) = 1.70 ± 0.03 mag. The monitoring of the Hα line reveals a slow long-term decline of its equivalent width since 2001. The line profile is characterized by a stable double-peak profile with no indication of large-scale distortions. We measured intrinsic optical polarization for the first time. Although somewhat higher than predicted by the models, the optical polarization is consistent with electron scattering in the circumstellar disk. Conclusions. We attribute the long-term decrease in the intensity of the Hα line to the dissipation of the circumstellar disk of the Be star. The longer variability timescales observed in SAX J2239.3+6116 compared to other Be/X-ray binaries may be explained by the wide orbit of the system.

We present the spectroscopic and photometric observations on the Be/X-ray binary RX~J0440.9+4431 from 2001 to 2014. The short-term and long-term variability of the H$\alpha$ line profile indicates that one-armed global oscillations existed in the circumstellar disk. Several positive and negative correlations between the $V$-band brightness and the H$\alpha$ intensity \textbf{were} found from the long-term photometric and spectroscopic observations. We suggest that the monotonic increase of the $V$-band brightness and the H$\alpha$ brightness between our 2005-2007 observations might be the result of a continuous mass ejection from the central Be star, while the negative correlation in 2007-2010 should be caused by the cessation of mass loss from the Be star just before the decline in $V$-band brightness began (around our 2007 observations). With the extension of the ejection material, the largest circumstellar disk during the last two decades has been observed in our 2010 observations with an equivalent width of $\sim$$-12.88$ \AA, which corresponds to a circumstellar disk with a size of 12.9 times the radius of the central Be star. Three consecutive X-ray outbursts peaking around MJD 55293, 55444, and 55591 might be connected with the largest circumstellar disk around the Be star. We also use the orbital motion of the neutron star as a probe to constrain the structure of the circumstellar disk and estimate the eccentricity of the binary system to be $\ge$ 0.4. Aims: We present a study of the Be/X-ray binary system V 0332+53 with the main goal of characterizing its behavior mainly during the intermediate-luminosity X-ray event on 2008. In addition, we aim to contribute to the understanding of the global behavior of the donor companion by including optical data from our dedicated campaign starting on 2006. Methods: V 0332+53 was observed by RXTE and Swift during the decay of the intermediate-luminosity X-ray outburst of 2008, as well as with Suzaku before the rising of the third normal outburst of the 2010 series. In addition, we present recent data from the Spanish ground-based astronomical observatories of El Teide (Tenerife), Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma), and Sierra Nevada (Granada), and since 2006 from the Turkish TUBITAK National Observatory (Antalya). We have performed temporal analyses to investigate the transient behaviour of this system during several outbursts. Results: Our optical study revealed that continuous mass ejection episodes from the Be star have been taking place since 2006 and another one is currently ongoing. The broad-band 1-60 keV X-ray spectrum of the neutron star during the decay of the 2008 outburst was well fitted with standard phenomenological models, enhanced by an absorption feature of unknown origin at about 10 keV and a narrow iron K-alpha fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. For the first time in V 0332+53 we tentatively see an increase of the cyclotron line energy with increasing flux (although further and more sensitive observations are needed to confirm this). Regarding the fast aperiodic variability, we detect a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) at 227+-9 mHz only during the lowest luminosities. The latter fact might indicate that the inner regions surrounding the magnetosphere are more visible during the lowest flux states., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (13/01/16)

There is much evidence that planet formation is occurring in the disk around the Herbig Be star HD100546. To learn more about the processes occurring in this disk we conducted high resolution imaging at 43/45 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Multiple array configurations were used, providing a best spatial resolution of $\sim$ 0.15 arcsec, or 15 AU at HD100546's distance of $\sim$ 100 pc. Significant structure is revealed, but its precise form is dependent on the $u-v$ plane sampling used for the image reconstruction. At a resolution of $\leq$ 30 AU we detected an inner gap in the disk with a radius of $\sim$ 25 AU and a position angle approximately along the known disk major axis. With different weighting, and an achieved resolution of $\sim$ 15 AU, emission appears at the centre and the disk takes on the shape of an incomplete ring, much like a horseshoe, again with a gap radius of $\sim$ 25 AU. The position angle of the disk major axis and its inclination from face-on are determined to be $140^{\circ}\pm5^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}\pm5^{\circ}$ respectively. The $\sim$ 25 AU gap radius is confirmed by a null in the real part of the binned visibilities at 320$\pm$10 k$\lambda$, whilst the non-axisymmetric nature is also confirmed through significant structure in the imaginary component. The emission mechanism at the central peak is most likely to be free-free emission from a stellar or disk wind. We present the analysis of the stellar content of NGC~2282, a young cluster in the Monoceros constellation, using deep optical $BVI$ and IPHAS photometry along with infrared (IR) data from UKIDSS and $Spitzer$-IRAC. Based on the stellar surface density analysis using nearest neighborhood method, the radius of the cluster is estimated as $\sim$ 3.15$\arcmin$. From optical spectroscopic analysis of 8 bright sources, we have classified three early B-type members in the cluster, which includes, HD 289120, a previously known B2V type star, a Herbig Ae/Be star (B0.5 Ve) and a B5 V star. From spectrophotometric analyses, the distance to the cluster has been estimated as $\sim$ 1.65 kpc. The $K$-band extinction map is estimated using nearest neighborhood technique, and the mean extinction within the cluster area is found to be A$_V$ $\sim$ 3.9 mag. Using IR colour-colour criteria and H$_\alpha$-emission properties, we have identified a total of 152 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in the region, of which, 75 are classified as Class II, 9 are Class I YSOs. Our YSO catalog also includes 50 H$_\alpha$-emission line sources, identified using slitless spectroscopy and IPHAS photometry data. Based on the optical and near-IR colour-magnitude diagram analyses, the cluster age has been estimated to be in the range of 2 $-$ 5 Myr, which is in agreement with the estimated age from disc fraction ($\sim$ 58\%). Masses of these YSOs are found to be $\sim$ 0.1$-$2.0 M$_\odot$. (abridged) Context: The envelopes of molecular gas around embedded low-mass protostars show different chemistries, which can be used to trace their formation history and physical conditions. The excitation of some molecular species can also be used to trace these physical conditions, making it possible to constrain e.g. sources of heating and excitation. Aims: To study the range of influence of an intermediate-mass Herbig Be protostar, and to find what chemical and physical impact feedback effects from the environment may have on embedded protostars. Methods: We follow up on an earlier line survey of the Class 0/I source R CrA IRS7B in the 0.8 mm window with an unbiased line survey of the same source in the 1.3 mm window using the APEX telescope. We also study the excitation of the key species H2CO, CH3OH, and c-C3H2 in a complete sample of the 18 embedded protostars in the Corona Australis star-forming region. Radiative transfer models are used to establish abundances of the molecular species. Results: We detect line emission from 20 molecular species (32 including isotopologues) in the two surveys. The most complex species detected are CH3OH, CH3CCH, CH3CHO, and CH3CN. Several complex organics are significantly under-abundant in comparison with "hot corino" protostars. The H2CO temperatures of the sources in the region decrease with the distance to the Herbig Be star R CrA, whereas the c-C3H2 temperatures remain constant across the star-forming region. Conclusions: The high H2CO temperatures observed towards objects close to R CrA suggest that this star has a sphere of influence of several 10000 AU in which it increases the temperature of the molecular gas to 30-50 K through irradiation. Aims. We present a multiwavelength study of the Be/X-ray binary system SAX J2103.5+4545 with the goal of better characterizing the transient behaviour of this source. Methods. SAX J2103.5+4545 was observed by Swift-XRT four times in 2007 from April 25 to May 5, and during quiescence in 2012 August 31. In addition, this source has been monitored from the ground-based astronomical observatories of El Teide (Tenerife, Spain), Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma, Spain) and Sierra Nevada (Granada, Spain) since 2011 August, and from the TUBITAK National Observatory (Antalya, Turkey) since 2009 June. We have performed spectral and photometric temporal analyses in order to investigate the different states exhibited by SAX J2103.5+4545. Results. In X-rays, an absorbed power law model provided the best fit for all the XRT spectra. An iron-line feature at ~6.42 keV was present in all the observations except for that taken during quiescence in 2012. The photon indexes are consistent with previous studies of SAX J2103.5+4545 in high/low luminosity states. Pulsations were found in all the XRT data from 2007 (2.839(2) mHz; MJD 54222.02), but not during quiescence. Both optical outbursts in 2010 and 2012 lasted for about 8/9 months (as the one in 2007 probably did and the current one in 2014 might do) and were most probably caused by mass ejection events from the Be star that eventually fed the circumstellar disc. All of these outbursts started about 3 months before the triggering of the X-ray activity, and about the same period before the maximum of the H_alpha line equivalent width (in emission) was reached at only ~ -5 \AA. An exceptionally bright new X-ray source in the Large Magellanic Cloud was discovered by the Swift/BAT telescope on MJD 54923 (2 April 2009), and shown to have a pulse period of 27s using follow-up observations by RXTE/PCA. We report here on detailed timing observations taken over the following weeks using Fermi/GBM which reveal an excellent orbital solution and indicate that the source flux peaked at $\sim10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. In addition, we report on follow-up optical observations (spectroscopic and photometric) which permit a classification of the mass donor star as B1Ve, and furthermore reveal a strong optical modulation at a period consistent with the binary period found from the Fermi/GBM data - 27.4 d. The dynamical mass estimate for the Be star is not in agreement with that expected for a B1V star - a mismatch similar to this has been previously reported for the few other Magellanic Cloud stars that also have dynamical mass estimates. In addition, the neutron star magnetic field determination from the X-ray data ($\sim10^{13}$ G) adds further evidence to the possibility that many such stars in High Mass X-ray Binary systems may have magnetic fields greater than previously expected ($\sim10^{12}$ G)., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

On MJD 56590-1 (2013 Oct 25-26) observations of the Magellanic Clouds by the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) observatory discovered a previously-unreported bright, flaring X-ray source. This source was initially given the identification IGR J00569-7226. Subsequent multi-wavelength observations identified the system as new Be/X-ray binary system in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Follow-up X-ray observations by Swift and XMM-Newton revealed an X-ray pulse period of 5.05s and that the system underwent regular occulation/eclipse behaviour every 17d. This is the first reported eclipsing Be/X-ray binary system in the SMC, and only the second such system known to date. Furthermore, the nature of the occultation makes it possible to use the neutron star to X-ray the circumstellar disk, thereby, for the first time, revealing direct observational evidence for its size and clumpy structure. Swift timing measurements allowed for the binary solution to be calculated from the Doppler shifted X-ray pulsations. This solution suggests this is a low eccentricity binary relative to others measured in the SMC. Finally it is interesting to note that the mass determined from this dynamical method for the Be star (approx 13 solar masses) is significantly different from that inferred from the spectroscopic classification of B0.2Ve (approx 16 solar masses) - an effect that has been noted for some other high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems., Comment: 19 pages, accepted by MNRAS

MWC 656 (= HD 215227) was recently discovered to be the first binary system composed of a Be star and a black hole (BH). We observed it with \textit{XMM-Newton}, and detected a faint X-ray source compatible with the position of the optical star, thus proving it to be the first Be/BH X-ray binary. The spectrum analysis requires a model fit with two components, a black body plus a power law, with $k_{\rm B}T = 0.07^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$~keV and a photon index $\Gamma= 1.0\pm0.8$, respectively. The non-thermal component dominates above $\simeq$0.8 keV. The obtained total flux is $F(0.3$--$5.5~{\rm keV}) = (4.6^{+1.3}_{-1.1})\times10^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. At a distance of $2.6\pm0.6$~kpc the total flux translates into a luminosity $L_{\rm X} = (3.7\pm1.7)\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Considering the estimated range of BH masses to be 3.8--6.9 $M_{\odot}$, this luminosity represents $(6.7\pm4.4)\times10^{-8}~L_{\rm Edd}$, which is typical of stellar-mass BHs in quiescence. We discuss the origin of the two spectral components: the thermal component is associated with the hot wind of the Be star, whereas the power law component is associated with emission from the vicinity of the BH. We also find that the position of MWC~656 in the radio versus X-ray luminosity diagram may be consistent with the radio/X-ray correlation observed in BH low-mass X-ray binaries. This suggests that this correlation might also be valid for BH high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) with X-ray luminosities down to $\sim10^{-8} L_{\rm Edd}$. The disk around the Herbig Ae/Be star HD 100546 has been extensively studied and it is one of the systems for which there are observational indications of ongoing and/or recent planet formation. However, up until now no resolved image of the millimeter dust emission or the gas has been published. We present the first resolved images of the disk around HD 100546 obtained in Band 7 with the ALMA observatory. The CO (3-2) image reveals a gas disk that extends out to 350 au radius at the 3-sigma level. Surprisingly, the 870um dust continuum emission is compact (radius, 6 pages, 4 figures. Accepted in ApJL

The Be/X-ray binary SXP1062 is of especial interest owing to the large spin period of the neutron star, its large spin-down rate, and the association with a supernova remnant constraining its age. This makes the source an important probe for accretion physics. To investigate the long-term evolution of the spin period and associated spectral variations, we performed an XMM-Newton target-of-opportunity observation of SXP1062 during X-ray outburst. Spectral and timing analysis of the XMM-Newton data was compared with previous studies, as well as complementary Swift/XRT monitoring and optical spectroscopy with the SALT telescope were obtained. The spin period was measured to be P_s =(1071.01+-0.16) s on 2012 Oct 14. The X-ray spectrum is similar to that of previous observations. No convincing cyclotron absorption features, which could be indicative for a high magnetic field strength, are found. The high-resolution RGS spectra indicate the presence of emission lines, which may not completely be accounted for by the SNR emission. The comparison of multi-epoch optical spectra suggest an increasing size or density of the decretion disc around the Be star. The main theoretical problem for the formation of a Keplerian disk around Be stars is how to supply angular momentum from the star to the disk, even more so since Be stars probably rotate somewhat sub-critically. For instance, nonradial pulsation may transport angular momentum to the stellar surface until (part of) this excess supports the disk formation/replenishment. The nearby Be star Achernar is presently building a new disk and offers an excellent opportunity to observe this process from relatively close-up. Spectra from various sources and epochs are scrutinized to identify the salient stellar parameters characterizing the disk life cycle as defined by H\alpha emission. Variable strength of the non-radial pulsation is confirmed, but does not affect the further results. For the first time it is demonstrated that the photospheric line width does vary in a Be star, by as much as \Delta v sin i \lesssim 35kms^{-1}. However, contrary to assumptions in which a photospheric spin-up accumulates during the diskless phase and then is released into the disk as it is fed, the apparent photospheric spin-up is positively correlated with the appearance of H\alpha line emission: The photospheric line widths and circumstellar emission increase together, and the apparent stellar rotation declines to the value at quiescence after the H\alpha line emission becomes undetectable., Comment: Accepted by A&A as letter

The optical behaviour of the Be star in the high mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770 shows that at the periastron typically there is an enhancement in the luminosity of order 0.02 to few tenths mag, and the X-ray outburst happens about 8 days after the periastron. We construct a quantitative model of this event, basing on the a nonstationary accretion disk behavior, connected with a high ellipticity of the orbital motion. The ephemeris used in this paper -- JD$_{\rm opt-outb}$ = JD$_0$(2,444,944) $\pm$ n(111.0 $\pm$ 0.4) days are derived from the orbital period of the system P$_{\rm orb} = 111.0 \pm 0.4$ days, determined by Priedhorsky & Terrell (1983), and from the optical flare of December 5, 1981 (Giovannelli et al., 1985) (here after 811205-E; E stands for the Event occurred at that date) that triggered the subsequent X-ray outburst of December 13, 1981 (Nagase et al., 1982) (here after 811213-E). We explain the observed time delay between the peaks of the optical and X-ray outbursts in this system by the time of radial motion of the matter in the accretion disk, after an increase of the mass flux in the vicinity of a periastral point in the binary. This time is determined by the turbulent viscosity, with the parameter $\alpha=0.1-0.3$. The increase of the mass flux is a sort of flush that reaches the external part of the accretion disk around the neutron star, producing an enhancement in the optical luminosity. The consequent X-ray flare happens when the matter reaches the hot central parts of the accretion disk, and the neutron star surface., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, with correction in abstract
