Search

Kagome magnets provide a fascinating platform for a plethora of topological quantum phenomena. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate Weyl lines with strong out-of-plane dispersion in an A-A stacked kagome magnet TbxGd1-xMn6Sn6. On the Gd rich side, the Weyl line remains nearly spin-orbit-gapless due to a remarkable cooperative interplay between Kane-Mele spin-orbit-coupling, low site symmetry and in-plane magnetic order. Under Tb substitution, the kagome Weyl line gaps due to a magnetic reorientation to out-of-plane order. Our results illustrate the magnetic moment direction as an efficient tuning knob for realizing distinct three-dimensional topological phases., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Comments are welcome!

Van Hove singularity are electronic instabilities that lead to many fascinating interactions, such as superconductivity and charge-density waves. And despite much interest, the nexus of emergent correlation effects from van Hove singularities and topological states of matter remains little explored in experiments. By utilizing synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory, here we provide the first discovery of the helicoid quantum nature of topological Fermi arcs inducing van Hove singularities. In particular, in topological chiral conductors RhSi and CoSi we directly observed multiple types of inter- and intra-helicoid-arc mediated singularities, which includes the type-I and type-II van Hove singularity. We further demonstrate that the energy of the helicoid-arc singularities are easily tuned by chemical engineering. Taken together, our work provides a promising route to engineering new electronic instabilities in topological quantum materials.

Known topological quantum matter, including topological insulators and Dirac/Weyl semimetals, often hosts robust boundary states in the gaps between bulk bands in energy-momentum space. Beyond one-gap systems, quantum crystals may also feature more than one inter-band gap. The manifestation of higher-fold topology with multiple nontrivial gaps in quantum materials remains elusive. In this work, we leverage a photoemission spectroscopy probe to discover the multi-gap topology of a chiral fermion material. We identify two sets of chiral surface states. These Fermi arcs exhibit an emergent ladder structure in energy-momentum space, unprecedented in topological materials. Furthermore, we determine the multi-gap chiral charge $\textbf{C}=(2,2)$. Our results provide a general framework to explore future complex topological materials.

The quantum level interplay between geometry, topology, and correlation is at the forefront of fundamental physics. Owing to the unusual lattice geometry and breaking of time-reversal symmetry, kagome magnets are predicted to support intrinsic Chern quantum phases. However, quantum materials hosting ideal spin-orbit coupled kagome lattices with strong out-of-plane magnetization have been lacking. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to discover a new topological kagome magnet TbMn6Sn6, which is close to satisfying the above criteria. We visualize its effectively defect-free purely Mn-based ferromagnetic kagome lattice with atomic resolution. Remarkably, its electronic state exhibits distinct Landau quantization upon the application of a magnetic field, and the quantized Landau fan structure features spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap. We further demonstrate the bulk-boundary correspondence between the Chern gap and topological edge state, as well as the Berry curvature field correspondence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Our results point to the realization of a quantum-limit Chern phase in TbMn6Sn6, opening up an avenue for discovering topological quantum phenomena in the RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth element) family with a variety of magnetic structures. Topological phases of matter have established a new paradigm in physics, bringing quantum phenomena to the macroscopic scale and hosting exotic emergent quasiparticles. In this thesis, I theoretically and experimentally demonstrate with my collaborators the first Weyl semimetal, TaAs, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), directly observing its emergent Weyl fermions and topological Fermi arc surface states [Science 349, 6248 (2015); Nat. Commun. 6, 7373 (2015); PRL 116, 066802 (2016)]. Next, I discover high-degeneracy topological chiral fermions in the chiral crystals RhSi and CoSi, with wide topological energy window, maximal separation in momentum space and giant Fermi arcs [Nature 567, 500 (2019); Nat. Mat. 17, 978 (2018)]. I establish a natural relationship between the structural and topological chirality, associated with a robust topological state which we predict supports a four-unit quantized photogalvanic effect [PRL 119, 206401 (2017)]. I also discuss the first quantum topological superlattice, in multilayer heterostructures consisting of alternating topological and trivial insulators [Sci. Adv. 3, e1501692 (2017)]. The Dirac cones at each interface tunnel across layers, forming an emergent atomic chain where the Dirac cones serve as atomic orbitals. I achieve unprecedented control of hopping amplitudes within the superlattice, realizing a topological phase transition. Lastly, I discover a room-temperature topological magnet in Co$_2$MnGa [Science 365, 1278 (2019); PRL 119, 156401 (2017)]. I observe topological Weyl lines and drumhead surface states by ARPES, demonstrating a topological invariant supported by the material's intrinsic magnetic order. I also find that the large anomalous Hall effect in Co$_2$MnGa arises from the Weyl lines. The search for novel topological phases of matter in quantum magnets has emerged as a frontier of condensed matter physics. Here we use state-of-the-art angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate single crystals of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ in its ferromagnetic phase. We report for the first time signatures of a topological Weyl loop. From fundamental symmetry considerations, this magnetic Weyl loop is expected to be gapless if spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is strictly zero but gapped, with possible Weyl points, under finite SOC. We point out that high-resolution ARPES results to date cannot unambiguously resolve the SOC gap anywhere along the Weyl loop, leaving open the possibility that Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ hosts zero Weyl points or some non-zero number of Weyl points. On the surface of our samples, we further observe a possible Fermi arc, but we are unable to clearly verify its topological nature using the established counting criteria. As a result, we argue that from the point of view of photoemission spectroscopy the presence of Weyl points and Fermi arcs in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ remains ambiguous. The quantum behaviour of electrons in materials lays the foundation for modern electronic and information technology. Quantum materials with novel electronic and optical properties have been proposed as the next frontier, but much remains to be discovered to actualize the promise. Here we report the first observation of topological quantum properties of chiral crystals in the RhSi family. We demonsrate that this material hosts novel phase of matter exhibiting nearly ideal topological surface properties that emerge as a consequence of the crystals' structural chirality or handedness. We also demonstrate that the electrons on the surface of this crystal show a highly unusual helicoid structure that spirals around two high-symmetry momenta signalling its topological electronic chirality. Such helicoid Fermi arcs on the surface experimentally characterize the topological charges of $\pm{2}$, which arise from the bulk chiral fermions. The existence of bulk high-fold degenerate fermions are guaranteed by the crystal symmetries, however, in order to determine the topological charge in the chiral crystals it is essential to identify and study the helical arc states. Remarkably, these topological conductors we discovered exhibit helical Fermi arcs which are of length $\pi$, stretching across the entire Brillouin zone and orders of magnitude larger than those found in all known Weyl semimetals. Our results demonstrate novel electronic topological state of matter on a structurally chiral crystal featuring helicoid Fermi arc surface states. The exotic electronic chiral fermion state realised in these materials can be used to detect a quantised photogalvanic optical response or the chiral magnetic effect and its optical version in future devices as described by G. The theoretical proposal of chiral fermions in topological semimetals has led to a significant effort towards their experimental realization. In particular, the Fermi surfaces of chiral semimetals carry quantized Chern numbers, making them an attractive platform for the observation of exotic transport and optical phenomena. While the simplest example of a chiral fermion in condensed matter is a conventional $|C|=1$ Weyl fermion, recent theoretical works have proposed a number of unconventional chiral fermions beyond the Standard Model which are protected by unique combinations of topology and crystalline symmetries. However, materials candidates for experimentally probing the transport and response signatures of these unconventional fermions have thus far remained elusive. In this paper, we propose the RhSi family in space group (SG) $\#$198 as the ideal platform for the experimental examination of unconventional chiral fermions. We find that RhSi is a filling-enforced semimetal that features near its Fermi surface a chiral double six-fold-degenerate spin-1 Weyl node at $R$ and a previously uncharacterized four-fold-degenerate chiral fermion at $\Gamma$. Each unconventional fermion displays Chern number $\pm4$ at the Fermi level. We also show that RhSi displays the largest possible momentum separation of compensative chiral fermions, the largest proposed topologically nontrivial energy window, and the longest possible Fermi arcs on its surface. Weyl semimetals are novel topological conductors that host Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles. While the Weyl fermions in high-energy physics are strictly defined as the massless solution of the Dirac equation and uniquely fixed by Lorentz symmetry, there is no such constraint for a topological metal in general. Specifically, the Weyl quasiparticles can arise by breaking either the space-inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) or time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetry. They can either respect Lorentz symmetry (type-I) or strongly violate it (type-II). To date, different types of Weyl fermions have been predicted to occur only in different classes of materials. In this paper, we present a significant materials breakthrough by identifying a large class of Weyl materials in the RAlX (R=Rare earth, Al, X=Ge, Si) family that can realize all different types of emergent Weyl fermions ($\mathcal{I}$-breaking, $\mathcal{T}$-breaking, type-I or type-II), depending on a suitable choice of the rare earth elements. Specifically, RAlX can be ferromagnetic, nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic and the electronic band topology and topological nature of the Weyl fermions can be tuned. The unparalleled tunability and the large number of compounds make the RAlX family of compounds a unique Weyl semimetal class for exploring the wide-ranging topological phenomena associated with different types of emergent Weyl fermions in transport, spectroscopic and device-based experiments., Comment: This paper reports theoretical prediction of Weyl semimetal (type-I and type-II) states in the R-Al-X family. The recent explosion of research interest in Weyl semimetals has led to many proposed Weyl semimetal candidates and a few experimental observations of a Weyl semimetal in real materials. Through this experience, we have come to appreciate that typical Weyl semimetals host many Weyl points. For instance, the first Weyl semimetal observed in experiment, TaAs, hosts 24 Weyl points. Similarly, the Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ series, recently under study as the first Type II Weyl semimetal, has eight Weyl points. However, it is well-understood that for a Weyl semimetal without inversion symmetry but with time-reversal symmetry, the minimum number of Weyl points is four. Realizing such a minimal Weyl semimetal is fundamentally relevant because it would offer the simplest "hydrogen atom" example of an inversion-breaking Weyl semimetal. At the same time, transport experiments and device applications may be simpler in a system with as few Weyl points as possible. Recently, TaIrTe$_4$ has been predicted to be a minimal, inversion-breaking Weyl semimetal. However, crucially, the Weyl points and Fermi arcs live entirely above the Fermi level, making them inaccessible to conventional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here we use pump-probe ARPES to directly access the band structure above the Fermi level in TaIrTe$_4$. We directly observe Weyl points and topological Fermi arcs, showing that TaIrTe$_4$ is a Weyl semimetal. We find that, in total, TaIrTe$_4$ has four Weyl points, providing the first example of a minimal inversion-breaking Weyl semimetal. Our results hold promise for accessing exotic transport phenomena arising in Weyl semimetals in a real material.

Topological metals and semimetals (TMs) have recently drawn significant interest. These materials give rise to condensed matter realizations of many important concepts in high-energy physics, leading to wide-ranging protected properties in transport and spectroscopic experiments. The most studied TMs, i.e., Weyl and Dirac semimetals, feature quasiparticles that are direct analogues of the textbook elementary particles. Moreover, the TMs known so far can be characterized based on the dimensionality of the band crossing. While Weyl and Dirac semimetals feature zero-dimensional points, the band crossing of nodal-line semimetals forms a one-dimensional closed loop. In this paper, we identify a TM which breaks the above paradigms. Firstly, the TM features triply-degenerate band crossing in a symmorphic lattice, hence realizing emergent fermionic quasiparticles not present in quantum field theory. Secondly, the band crossing is neither 0D nor 1D. Instead, it consists of two isolated triply-degenerate nodes interconnected by multi-segments of lines with two-fold degeneracy. We present materials candidates. We further show that triplydegenerate band crossings in symmorphic crystals give rise to a Landau level spectrum distinct from the known TMs, suggesting novel magneto-transport responses. Topological semimetals (TSMs) including Weyl semimetals and nodal-line semimetals are expected to open the next frontier of condensed matter and materials science. Although the first inversion breaking Weyl semimetal was recently discovered in TaAs, its magnetic counterparts, i.e., the time-reversal breaking Weyl and nodal line semimetals, remain elusive. They are predicted to exhibit exotic properties distinct from the inversion breaking TSMs including TaAs. In this paper, we identify the magnetic topological semimetal state in the ferromagnetic half-metal compounds Co$_2$TiX (X=Si, Ge, or Sn) with Curie temperatures higher than 350 K. Our first-principles band structure calculations show that, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, Co$_2$TiX features three topological nodal lines. The inclusion of spin-orbit coupling gives rise to Weyl nodes, whose momentum space locations can be controlled as a function of the magnetization direction. Weyl semimetals may open a new era in condensed matter physics, materials science and nanotech after graphene and topological insulators. We report the first atomic scale view of the surface states of a Weyl semimetal (NbP) using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We observe coherent quantum interference patterns that arise from the scattering of quasiparticles near point defects on the surface. The measurements reveal the surface electronic structure both below and above the chemical potential in both real and reciprocal spaces. Moreover, the interference maps uncover the scattering processes of NbP's exotic surface states. Through comparison between experimental data and theoretical calculations, we further discover that the scattering channels are largely restricted by the orbital and/or spin texture of the surface band. The visualization of the scattering processes can help design novel transport effects and electronics on the topological surface of a Weyl semimetal., Comment: Submitted October 2015

The family of binary compounds including TaAs, TaP, NbAs, and NbP was recently discovered as the first realization of Weyl semimetals. In order to develop a comprehensive description of the charge carriers in these Weyl semimetals, we performed systematic electronic structure calculations which reveal the nature of Fermi surfaces and their complex interconnectivity in TaAs, TaP, NbAs, and NbP. Our work report the first comparative and comprehensive study of Fermi surface topology and band structure details of all known members of the Weyl semimetal family and provide the necessary building blocks for advancing our understanding of their unique topologically protected low-energy Weyl fermion physics.

Recently, noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd has attracted considerable research interest due to the possibility of being a topological superconductor. Here, we report a systematic high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the normal state electronic properties of BiPd. Our experimental results show the presence of a surface state at higher binding energy with the location of Dirac point at around 700 meV below the Fermi level. The detailed photon energy and temperature dependent measurements complemented by our first-principles calculations provide further evidence for the presence of the topological surface state at high binding energy. The absence of topological surface states near the Fermi level negates the possibility of the topological superconducting behavior in the surface of this material. The recent experimental discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature and demonstrates a novel type of anomalous surface state band structure, consisting of Fermi arcs. So far, work has focused on Weyl semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, Weyl semimetals with weak SOC may allow tunable spin-splitting for device applications and may exhibit a crossover to a spinless topological phase, such as a Dirac line semimetal in the case of spinless TaAs. NbP, isostructural to TaAs, may realize the first Weyl semimetal in the limit of weak SOC. Here we study the surface states of NbP by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and we find that we $\textit{cannot}$ show Fermi arcs based on our experimental data alone. We present an $\textit{ab initio}$ calculation of the surface states of NbP and we find that the Weyl points are too close and the Fermi level is too low to show Fermi arcs either by (1) directly measuring an arc or (2) counting chiralities of edge modes on a closed path. Nonetheless, the excellent agreement between our experimental data and numerical calculations suggests that NbP is a Weyl semimetal, consistent with TaAs, and that we observe trivial surface states which evolve continuously from the topological Fermi arcs above the Fermi level. Based on these results, we propose a slightly different criterion for a Fermi arc which, unlike (1) and (2) above, does not require us to resolve Weyl points or the spin splitting of surface states. We propose that raising the Fermi level by $> 20$ meV would make it possible to observe a Fermi arc using this criterion in NbP. In a topological insulator, it is the electrons on the surface or edge that carry the signature of topology. Recently, a novel topological state has been proposed in metals or semimetals (gapless) whose band-structure is similar to that of a three-dimensional analog of graphene. However, to this date the signature of its topology remains an open question. We report the experimental discovery of a pair of polarized Fermi arc surface state modes in the form of a new type of two-dimensional polarized electron gas on the surfaces of Dirac semimetals. These Fermi arc surface states (FASS) are observed to connect across an even number of bulk band gapless nodes and found to have their spin uniquely locked to their momentum. We show that these states are distinctly different from the topological surface states (TSS) seen in all known topological insulators. Novel phases of two dimensional electron systems resulting from new surface or interface modified electronic structures have generated significant interest in material science. We utilize photoemission spectroscopy to show that the near-surface electronic structure of a bulk insulating iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ lying near metal-Mott insulator transition exhibit weak metallicity signified by finite electronic spectral weight at the Fermi level. The surface electrons exhibit a unique spin structure resulting from an interplay of spin-orbit, Coulomb interaction and surface quantum magnetism, distinct from a topological insulator state. Understanding the superconducting proximity effect on the surface of a topological insulator is of critical importance in realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions in solid state settings. We fabricate delicate heterostructure samples between topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 thin film and high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ (Tc ~ 91 K). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we probe the electronic structure and the possible existence of superconducting gap on the top surface of Bi2Se3 thin films.
