The fundamental properties of stellar clusters, such as the age or the total initial mass in stars, are often inferred from population synthesis models. The predicted properties are then used to constrain the physical mechanisms involved in the formation of such clusters in a variety of environments. Population synthesis models cannot, however, be applied blindy to such systems. We show that synthesis models cannot be used in the usual straightforward way to small-mass clusters (say, M < few times 10**4 Mo). The reason is that the basic hypothesis underlying population synthesis (a fixed proportionality between the number of stars in the different evolutionary phases) is not fulfilled in these clusters due to their small number of stars. This incomplete sampling of the stellar mass function results in a non-gaussian distribution of the mass-luminosity ratio for clusters that share the same evolutionary conditions (age, metallicity and initial stellar mass distribution function). We review some tests that can be carried out a priori to check whether a given cluster can be analysed with the fully-sampled standard population synthesis models, or, on the contrary, a probabilistic framework must be used. This work aims to provide a theoretical formulation of Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) in the framework of probabilistic synthesis models, and to distinguish between the different distributions involved in the SBF definition. RESULTS: We propose three definitions of SBF: (i) stellar population SBF, which can be computed from synthesis models and provide an intrinsic metric of fit for stellar population studies; (ii) theoretical SBF, which include the stellar population SBF plus an additional term that takes into account the distribution of the number of stars per resolution element psi(N); theoretical SBF coincide with Tonry & Schneider (1998) definition in the very particular case that psi(N) is assumed to be a Poisson distribution. However, the Poisson contribution to theoretical SBF is around 0.1% of the contribution due to the stellar population SBF, so there is no justification to include any reference to Poisson statistics in the SBF definition; (iii) observational SBF, which are those obtained in observations that are distributed around the theoretical SBF. Finally, we show alternative ways to compute SBF and extend the application of stellar population SBF to defining a metric of fitting for standard stellar population studies. CONCLUSIONS: We demostrate that SBF are observational evidence of a probabilistic paradigm in population synthesis, where integrated luminosities have an intrinsic distributed nature, and they rule out the commonly assumed deterministic paradigm of stellar population modeling., A&A accepted

In general, synthesis models provide the mean value of the distribution of possible integrated luminosities, this distribution (and not only its mean value) being the actual description of the integrated luminosity. Therefore, to obtain the closest model to an observation only provides confi- dence about the precision of such a fit, but not information about the accuracy of the result. In this contribution we investigate how to describe the results and usage of evolutionary synthesis models. In particular, we look for an explicit and quantitative description of the parameter space of synthesis models and the evaluation of their associated uncertainties and dispersion. First, we need to understand what synthesis models actually compute: we show that a synthetic stellar population with fixed physical parameters (age, metallicity, star formation history, initial mass function and size of the system) can only be described in terms of probability distributions (i.e. there is an intrinsic dispersion in any model). Second, we need to identify and characterize the coverage in the parameter space of the models (i.e. the combinations of input parameters that yield meaningful models) and the different sources of systematic errors. Third, we need a way to describe quantitatively the intrinsic dispersion, the systematic error and the parameter space coverage of the models. Up to now, the parameter space coverage and uncertainties have been described qualitatively in the models' reference papers, with potential misinterpretations by models' users. The surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) method is a statistical method applied on image pixels in different bands. This contribution aims to distinguish between the observational (statistical) method and the theoretical (probabilistic) method based on stellar population synthesis and needed for the calibration of observational SBF. We find that the commonly used SBF theoretical definition as the "mean luminosity-weighted luminosity of the stellar population" is only compatible with the observational method under quite strong hypotheses, and that it is not compatible with stellar population theory results., Comment: 2 pages, ASP LaTeX. In this contribution I present my current work in a new generation of evolutionary synthesis models that compute the multiwavelength energy distribution (from gamma-rays to radio) as well as the associated dispersion for young stellar systems. I will also show some statistical effects that may appear in the analysis of surveys, like bimodal or multi-modal distributions and bias when color indices computed by the codes are compared with observations. In this contribution I show the physical limitations to the application of standard synthesis models from 0 to 10 Gyr. I also present the multiwavelength spectrum (from gamma-rays to radio) of young star forming regions based on evolutionary population synthesis models that takes into account the stochasticity of the star formation proces. I show how the correlation of different observables can allow to establish a better understanding of the star formation processes. The detection of 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line emission from the Cygnus X complex by the COMPTEL telescope is one of the most convincing proves of massive star nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy. The Cygnus X complex is an extremely active nearby region, containing several star forming regions, OB associations and young open star clusters. It houses some of the most massive stars known in our Galaxy and concentrates a large number of Wolf-Rayet stars. Thermal radio continuum emission and intense [C II] line emission reveals widespread ionisation, and at least 60 individual H II regions have been identified. In order to understand the 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line emission from the Cygnus X complex, and to compare the observations to theoretical nucleosynthesis calculations, we modelled the multi-wavelength spectrum of the region by means of an evolutionary synthesis model. Our investigation leads us to the following conclusions: 1. Stellar wind ejection is the dominant mechanism for the observed 26Al enrichment in the Cygnus X region. 2. Cyg OB2 is by far the dominating massive star association in Cygnus X and 1.809 MeV line emission from 26Al produced in this association should be detectable by the spectrometer SPI on INTEGRAL. 3. There is only low supernova activity in the Cygnus X complex and the 60Fe lines should be below INTEGRAL's detection sensitivity. The detectability of an individual massive star cluster (Cyg OB2) by INTEGRAL provides a fantastic opportunity for future nucleosynthesis studies using gamma-ray line spectroscopy. When evolutionary synthesis models take into account the stochastic nature of the IMF together with the discrete number of stars in real stellar clusters, typical output turns to dispersion band (where real data can be placed) instead of narrow lines. We present a new set of surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) spectra computed with the E-MILES stellar population synthesis models. The model SBF spectra cover the range λλ1680–50 000 at moderately high resolution, all based on extensive empirical stellar libraries. The models span the metallicity range −2.3 ≤ [M/H] ≤ +0.26 for a suite of intial mass function types with varying slopes. These predictions can complement and aid fluctuation magnitude studies, permitting a first-order approximation by applying filter responses to the SBF spectra to obtain spectroscopic SBF magnitudes. We provide a recipe for obtaining the latter and discuss their uncertainties and limitations. We compare our spectroscopic SBF magnitudes to photometric data of a sample of early-type galaxies. We also show that the SBF spectra can be very useful for constraining relevant stellar population parameters.
