We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy $\gamma$-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the most sensitive $E > 1$ TeV gamma-ray survey of the sky covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and with significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. For each source, we provide its position, extension and spectral characteristics. Furthermore, based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

In this paper, we report the detection and follow-ups of a super stellar flare GWAC\,181229A with an amplitude of $��R\sim$9.5 mag on a M9 type star by $\text{SVOM/GWAC}$ and the dedicated follow-up telescopes. The estimated bolometric energy $E_{bol}$ is $(5.56-9.25)\times10^{34}$ ergs, which places the event to be one of the most powerful flares on ultracool stars. The magnetic strength is inferred to be (3.6-4.7) kG. Thanks to the sampling with a cadence of 15 seconds, a new component near the peak time with a very steep decay is detected in the $R$-band light curve, followed by the two-component flare template given by Davenport et al. (2014). An effective temperature of $5340\pm40$ K is measured by a blackbody shape fitting to the spectrum at the shallower phase during the flare. The filling factors of the flare are estimated to be $\sim$30\% and 19\% at the peak time and at 54 min after the first detection. The detection of the particular event with large amplitude, huge-emitted energy and a new component demonstrates that a high cadence sky monitoring cooperating with fast follow-up observations is very essential for understanding the violent magnetic activity., 14 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted by ApJ

The nuclide $^{14}$C can be produced in the atmosphere by high energy particles and $\gamma$-rays from high-energy phenomena. Through the carbon cycle, some of $^{14}$CO$_2$ produced in the atmosphere can be retained in annual tree rings. Four events of rapid increase of the $^{14}$C content occurred in AD 775, AD 994, BC 660 and BC 3371 were found. Recently, the data of Jull et al. (2020) was inconsistent with our records around BC 3371. We measured our sample again and found the $^{14}$C records are consistent with the value in Wang et al. (2017). Therefore, our $^{14}$C records are robust. The inconsistency may be caused by the difference of calendar ages for the wood samples, or the physical origin of the event. First, crossdating on ring width can be performed only between trees whose growth has the same environmental conditions. Because the master tree-ring for dendrochronology is lack for Chinese trees. The master tree-ring from California has to be used. Therefore, the calendar ages derived from dendrochronology may be not precise. Second, the $^{14}$C even may be not global. One evidence is the variation of $^{14}$C content around AD 1006. The $^{14}$C contents of Californian trees increase 12\textperthousand~ in two years, while Japanese trees show no $^{14}$C increase., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

Recently, the discovery of Galactic FRB 200428 associated with a X-ray burst (XRB) of SGR 1935+2154 has built a bridge between FRBs and magnetar activities. In this paper, we assume that the XRB occurs in the magnetar magnetosphere. We show that the observational properties of FRB 200428 and the associated XRB are consistent with the predictions of synchrotron maser emission at ultrarelativistic magnetized shocks, including radiation efficiency, similar energy occurrence frequency distributions, and simultaneous arrive times. It requires that the upstream medium is a mildly relativistic baryonic shell ejected by a previous flare. The energy injection by flares responsible for the radio bursts will produce a magnetar wind nebula, which has been used to explain the persistent radio source associated FRB 121102. We find that the radio continuum around SGR 1935+2154 can be well understood in the magnetar wind nebula model, by assuming the same energy injection rate $\dot{E} \propto t^{-1.37}$ as FRB 121102. The required baryonic mass is also estimated form the observations of FRB 121102 by GBT and FAST. By assuming the same radiation efficiency $\eta \sim 10^{-5}$, the total baryonic mass ejected from the central magnetar is about 0.005 solar mass. Recently, DeLaunay et al. (2016) discovered a gamma-ray transient, Swift J0644.5-5111, associated with the fast radio burst (FRB) 131104. They also reported follow-up broadband observations beginning two days after the FRB and provided upper limits on a putative afterglow of this transient. In this paper, we show that if such a transient drives a relativistic shock as in a cosmological gamma-ray burst (GRB), these upper limits are consistent with an environment of which density is much less than that of an interstellar medium but typical for the outskirts' density of a galaxy when the typical values of three microphysical parameters of the shock are taken. This appears to be inconsistent with the catastrophic event models in which the central engine of Swift J0644.5-5111 is surrounded by an interstellar medium, but together with the properties of the gamma-ray transient, favors the binary neutron star merger origin. We further constrain the physical parameters of the postmerger object by assuming that Swift J0644.5-5111 results from internal dissipation of a spinning-down pulsar wind, and we find that the postmerger object is an ultra-strongly magnetized, very rapidly rotating pulsar. This merger event should have given birth to a gravitational wave burst, an FRB, and a short GRB or an extended X-ray/gamma-ray emission if a relativistic jet of the GRB is missed. Several interesting luminosity correlations among gamma-ray burst (GRB) variables have been recently discussed extensively. In this paper, we derive the six luminosity correlations ($\tlag-L$, $V-L$, $\epkk-L$, $\epkk-E_\gamma$, $\trt-L$, $\epkk-E_{\gamma, \mathrm{iso}}$) from the light curves and spectra of the latest 116 long GRBs, including the time lag ($\tlag$) between low and high photon energy light curves, the variability ($V$) of the light curve, the peak energy of the spectrum ($\epkk$), and the minimum rise time ($\trt$) of the peaks. We find that the intrinsic scatter of the $V-L$ correlation is too large and there seems no inherent correlation between the two parameters using the latest GRB data. The other five correlations indeed exist when the sample is enlarged. The $\epkk-E_\gamma$ correlation has a significantly lower intrinsic scatter compared to the other correlations. We divide the full data into four redshift bins when testing possible evolution of the correlations with redshift. We find no statistically significant evidence for the redshift evolution of the luminosity correlations. To avoid the circularity problem when constraining the cosmological parameters, we simultaneously minimize $\chi^2$ with respect to both correlation parameters $a$, $b$ and the cosmological parameters using the maximum likelihood method. For the flat $\Lambda$CDM, the best fit is $\omm=0.31^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$. We also constrain the possible evolution of the equation of state (EOS) of the dark energy using the GRBs together with the Union2 compilation of SNe Ia and the $H(z)$ data. The result is consistent with the cosmological constant at $2 \sigma$ confidence level and mainly due to the GRB data, the dark energy EOS shows slight deviation from -1 at $z \geq0.5$ as was persistently presented with many previous data sets., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

It is long speculated that long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate froma relativistic jet emerging from a collapsing massive star progenitor. Although associations of core-collapsing supernovae with long GRB afterglows have been identified in a number of systems, including the latest X-ray flash (XRF) 060218/SN 2006aj connection detected by Swift, direct evidence of a relativistic jet emerging from a collapsing star is still lacking. Here we report the detection of a thermal emission component (high-T component) accompanying the prompt X-ray emission of XRF 060218, with temperature kT_H=1.21+0.22/-0.24 keV and effective blackbody radius R_H~ 5\times 10^{9} cm. This high-T component co-exists with another low-T thermal component as reported by Campana et al. 2006 for at least 2700 seconds, but evolves independently with respect to the low-T component by tracing the lightcurve of the non-thermal component. We identify this high-T thermal component as the emission of a hot cocoon surrounding the relativistic jet, as expected from the theoretical models., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Although the link between long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) has been established, hitherto there have been no observations of the beginning of a supernova explosion and its intimate link to a GRB. In particular, we do not know however how a GRB jet emerges from the star surface nor how a GRB progenitor explodes. Here we report on observations of the close GRB060218 and its connection to SN2006aj. In addition to the classical non-thermal emission, GRB060218 shows a thermal component in its X-ray spectrum, which cools and shifts into the optical/UV band as time passes. We interpret these features as arising from the break out of a shock driven by a mildly relativistic shell into the dense wind surrounding the progenitor. Our observations allow us for the first time to catch a SN in the act of exploding, to directly observe the shock break-out and to provide strong evidence that the GRB progenitor was a Wolf-Rayet star., Comment: 12 pages, 3 color figures (final version). We analyze several recently detected gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with late X-ray flares in the context of late internal shock and late external shock models. We find that the X-ray flares in GRB 050421 and GRB 050502B originate from late internal shocks, while the main X-ray flares in GRB 050406 and GRB 050607 may arise from late external shocks. Under the assumption that the central engine has two periods of activities, we get four basic types of X-ray light curves. The classification of these types depends on which period of activities produces the prompt gamma-ray emission (Type 1 and Type 2: the earlier period; Type 3 and Type 4: the late period), and on whether the late ejecta catching up with the early ejecta happens earlier than the deceleration of the early ejecta (Type 1 and Type 3) or not (Type 2 and Type 4). We find that the X-ray flare caused by a late external shock is a special case of Type 1. Our analysis reveals that the X-ray light curves of GRBs 050406, 050421, and 050607 can be classified as Type 1, while the X-ray light curve of GRB 050502B is classified as Type 2. However, the X-ray light curve of GRB 050406 is also likely to be Type 2. We also predict a long-lag short-lived X-ray flare caused by the inner external shock, which forms when a low baryon-loading long-lag late ejecta decelerates in the non-relativistic tail of an outer external shock driven by an early ejecta., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ApJ submitted

Recent follow-up observations of the December 27 giant flare of SGR 1806-20 have detected a multiple-frequency radio afterglow from 240 MHz to 8.46 GHz, extending in time from a week to about a month after the flare. The angular size of the source was also measured for the first time. Here we show that this radio afterglow gives the first piece of clear evidence that an energetic blast wave sweeps up its surrounding medium and produces a synchrotron afterglow, the same mechanism as established for gamma-ray burst afterglows. The optical afterglow is expected to be intrinsically as bright as $m_R\simeq13$ at $t\la 0.1$ days after the flare, but very heavy extinction makes the detection difficult because of the low galactic latitude of the source. Rapid infrared follow-up observations to giant flares are therefore crucial for the low-latitude SGRs, while for high-latitude SGRs (e.g. SGR 0526-66), rapid follow-ups should result in identification of their possible optical afterglows. (abridged) Afterglow light curves are constructed analytically for realistic gamma-ray burst remnants decelerating in either a homogeneous interstellar medium or a stellar wind environment, taking into account the radiative loss of the blast wave, which affects the temporal behaviors significantly. Inverse Compton scattering is considered. The inverse Compton effect prolongs the fast-cooling phase markedly, during which the relativistic shock is semi-radiative and the radiation efficiency is approximately constant. It is further shown that the shock is still semi-radiative for quite a long time after it transits into the slow-cooling phase. The temporal decaying index of the X-ray afterglow light curve in this semi-radiative phase is more consistent with the observed $ \sim 1.3$ than the commonly used adiabatic one. To manifest as a bump or even dominant in the X-ray afterglows during the relativistic stage, it is required that the density should be larger than about 1-10 cm$^{-3}$ in the interstellar medium case, or the wind parameter $A_{\ast}$ should be larger than unity in the stellar wind case., Comment: 28 pages including 2 figures, accepted by ApJ on October 11

An $E_{��,{\rm jet}}\propto {E'_p}^{1.5}$ relationship with a small scatter for current $��$-ray burst (GRB) data was recently reported, where $E_{��,{\rm jet}}$ is the beaming-corrected $��$-ray energy and $E'_p$ is the $��F_��$ peak energy in the local observer frame. By considering this relationship for a sample of 12 GRBs with known redshift, peak energy, and break time of afterglow light curves, we constrain the mass density of the universe and the nature of dark energy. We find that the mass density $��_M=0.35\pm^{0.15}_{0.15}$ (at the $1��$ confident level) for a flat universe with a cosmological constant, and the $w$ parameter of an assumed static dark-energy equation of state $w=-0.84\pm^{0.57}_{0.83}$ ($1��$). Our results are consistent with those from type Ia supernovae. Synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in the reverse shocks of gamma-ray bursts is suggested to be responsible for the observed prompt high-energy gamma-ray emissions from several gamma-ray bursts. We find that the SSC emission from the reverse shocks dominates over other emission processes in energy bands from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, for a wide range of shock parameters. This model is favorable for escape of energetic photons from the emitting regions due to a lower internal pair-production optical depth, as the characteristic size of the reverse shock region is much larger than that of internal shocks. We predict that, in this model, the prompt high-energy emissions are correlated with the prompt optical flashes, which can be test in the forthcoming GLAST era., Comment: 9 pages, 3 eps figures embedded. Based on a refined generic dynamical model, we investigate afterglows from jetted gamma-ray burst (GRB) remnants numerically. In the relativistic phase, the light curve break could marginally be seen. However, an obvious break does exist at the transition from the relativistic phase to the non-relativistic phase, which typically occurs at time 10 to 30 days. It is very interesting that the break is affected by many parameters, especially by the electron energy fraction (xi_e), and the magnetic energy fraction (xi_B^2). Implication of orphan afterglow surveys on GRB beaming is investigated. We present a new model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that are not only associated with supernovae but also have small baryon contamination. In this model, we assume a newborn neutron star to move outward at a kick velocity of $\sim 10^3 {\rm km} {\rm s}^{-1}$ in the supernova ejecta. We find that such a neutron star still hypercritically accretes its surrounding supernova matter. Once the stellar mass increases to some critical mass, the neutron star will undergo a phase transition to become a strange star, leading to an energy release of a few $10^{52}$ ergs. The phase transition, if possibly occuring just near the supernova front, will first result in an ultra-relativistic fireball and then a GRB. This provides a plausible explanation for the GRB-supernova association. We estimate the burst rate to be $\sim 10^{-6}$ per year per galaxy. Our model also predicts other possiblities. For example, if the resulting fireballs have a Lorentz factor of the order of a few, they will produce X-ray GRBs observed by BeppoSAX. In the standard scenario of the fireball model of gamma-ray bursts(GRBs), the huge initial energy release produces a relativistic blast wave expanding into the external medium and a reverse shock moving into and heating the fireball ejecta. We calculate the high energy gamma-ray emission due to inverse Compton scattering of the synchrotron photons from relativistic electrons in the reverse shock. Under the favorable values of the physical parameters of the GRBs and the interstellar medium, our result shows that during the prompt phase, this emission dominates over the component from the forward shock at high energy gamma-ray bands. This mechanism can excellently account for the observations of the prompt high energy gamma-rays detected by EGRET, such as from GRB930131., 11 pages, latex, accepted to be published in Ap.J.Letters

We here propose a two-step model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with supernovae. In the first step, the core collapse of a star with mass $\ge 19M_\odot$ leads to a massive neutron star and a normal supernova, and subsequently hypercritical accretion of the neutron star from the supernova ejecta may give rise to a jet through neutrino annihilation and/or Poynting flux along the stellar rotation axis. However, because of too much surrounding matter, this jet rapidly enters a nonrelativistic phase and evolves to a large bubble. In the second step, the neutron star promptly implodes to a rapidly rotating black hole surrounded by a torus when the mass of the star increases to the maximum mass and meanwhile its rotation frequency increases to the upper limit due to the accreted angular momentum. The gravitational binding energy of the torus may be dissipated by a magnetized relativistic wind, which may then be absorbed by the supernova ejecta, thus producing an energetic hypernova. The rotational energy of the black hole may be extracted by the Blandford-Znajek's mechanism, leading to another jet. This jet is relatively free of baryons and thus may be accelerated to an ultrarelativistic phase because the first jet has pushed out of its front matter and left a baryon-free exit. We expect that the second jet generates a GRB and its afterglow. Our two-step model may alleviate the baryon-contamination problem suffered possibly from in the hypernova models. Both observations and theoretical models suggest that the emissions in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the afterglows are beamed. We argue that the recent polarization measured in the afterglows gives further evidence of beaming in GRBs. In this approach, we adopted the polarization-magnitude relation of BL Lacertae objects to 4 GRBs with available polarization measurements and found that the data of the 4 GRBs are consistent with the relation of BL Lacertae objects. This result suggests that the emissions in GRBs are beamed and there are similarities between GRBs and BL Lacertae objects (or generally blazars). In a recent paper (Dai & Lu 1999), we have proposed a simple model in which the steepening in the light curve of the R-band afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990123 is caused by the adiabatic shock which has evolved from an ultrarelativistic phase to a nonrelativistic phase in a dense medium. We find that such a model is quite consistent with observations if the medium density is about $3\times 10^6 {\rm cm}^{-3}$. Here we discuss this model in more details. In particular, we investigate the effects of synchrotron self absorption and energy injection. A shock in a dense medium becomes nonrelativistic rapidly after a short relativistic phase. The afterglow from the shock at the nonrelativistic stage decays more rapidly than at the relativistic stage. Since some models for GRB energy sources predict that a strongly magnetic millisecond pulsar may be born during the formation of GRB, we discuss the effect of such a pulsar on the evolution of the nonrelativistic shock through magnetic dipole radiation. We find that after the energy which the shock obtains from the pulsar is much more than the initial energy of the shock, the afterglow decay will flatten significantly. When the pulsar energy input effect disappears, the decay will steepen again. These features are in excellent agreement with the afterglows of GRB 980519, GRB 990510 and GRB 980326. We consider a model in which the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) result from young, magnetized strange stars with superconducting cores. As such a strange star spins down, the quantized vortex lines move outward and drag the magnetic field tubes because of the strong coupling between them. Since the terminations of the tubes interact with the stellar crust, the dragged tubes can produce sufficient tension to crack the crust. Part of the broken platelet will be dragged into the quark core, which is only $10^4$ cm from the surface, leading to the deconfinement of crustal matter into strange quark matter and thus the release of energy. We will show that the burst energy, duration, time interval and spectrum for our model are in agreement with the observational results.
