Abstract

We describe a theoretical proposal of a nanofibre-based trap for a Rb$_2$ molecule prepared in the metastable state $(1)^3\Sigma^+_u$. The trapping potential results from the combination of a travelling and a standing-wave fields, both carried by the fundamental guided mode HE$_{11}$ of the fibre. We show that, with an experimentally realistic choice of laser frequencies and powers, one can implement a $\approx 200$ $\mu$K-deep well at $\approx 140$ nm from the fibre surface accomodating for $\approx 500$ translational molecular states.

Abstract

International audience; Atom-based quantum simulators have had tremendous success in tackling challenging quantum many-body problems, owing to the precise and dynamical control that they provide over the systems' parameters. They are, however, often optimized to address a specific type of problems. Here, we present the design and implementation of a $^6$Li-based quantum gas platform that provides wide-ranging capabilities and is able to address a variety of quantum many-body problems. Our two-chamber architecture relies on a robust and easy-to-implement combination of gray molasses and optical transport from a laser-cooling chamber to a glass cell with excellent optical access. There, we first create unitary Fermi superfluids in a three-dimensional axially symmetric harmonic trap and characterize them using in situ thermometry, reaching temperatures below 20 nK. This allows us to enter the deep superfluid regime with samples of extreme diluteness, where the interparticle spacing is sufficiently large for direct single-atom imaging. Secondly, we generate optical lattice potentials with triangular and honeycomb geometry in which we study diffraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, and show how going beyond the Kapitza-Dirac regime allows us to unambiguously distinguish between the two geometries. With the ability to probe quantum many-body physics in both discrete and continuous space, and its suitability for bulk and single-atom imaging, our setup represents an important step towards achieving a wide-scope quantum simulator.

Abstract

TREXIO is an open-source file format and library developed for the storage and manipulation of data produced by quantum chemistry calculations. It is designed with the goal of providing a reliable and efficient method of storing and exchanging wave function parameters and matrix elements, making it an important tool for researchers in the field of quantum chemistry. In this work, we present an overview of the TREXIO file format and library. The library consists of a front-end implemented in the C programming language and two different back-ends: a text back-end and a binary back-end utilizing the HDF5 library which enables fast read and write operations. It is compatible with a variety of platforms and has interfaces for the Fortran, Python, and OCaml programming languages. In addition, a suite of tools has been developed to facilitate the use of the TREXIO format and library, including converters for popular quantum chemistry codes and utilities for validating and manipulating data stored in TREXIO files. The simplicity, versatility, and ease of use of TREXIO make it a valuable resource for researchers working with quantum chemistry data., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We consider a model of an intelligent surfer moving on the Ulam network generated by a chaotic dynamics in the Chirikov standard map. This directed network is obtained by the Ulam method with a division of the phase space in cells of fixed size forming the nodes of a Markov chain. The goal quest for this surfer is to determine the network path from an initial node A to a final node B with minimal resistance given by the sum of inverse transition probabilities. We develop an algorithm for the intelligent surfer that allows to perform the quest in a small number of transitions which grows only logarithmically with the network size. The optimal path search is done on a fractal intersection set formed by nodes with small Erd\"os numbers of the forward and inverted networks. The intelligent surfer exponentially outperforms a naive surfer who tries to minimize its phase space distance to the target B. Abstract

The family of Green's function methods based on the $GW$ approximation has gained popularity in the electronic structure theory thanks to its accuracy in weakly correlated systems combined with its cost-effectiveness. Despite this, self-consistent versions still pose challenges in terms of convergence. A recent study \href{https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0089317}{[J. Chem. Phys. 156, 231101 (2022)]} has linked these convergence issues to the intruder-state problem. In this work, a perturbative analysis of the similarity renormalization group (SRG) approach is performed on Green's function methods. The SRG formalism enables us to derive, from first principles, the expression of a naturally static and Hermitian form of the self-energy that can be employed in quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (qs$GW$) calculations. The resulting SRG-based regularized self-energy significantly accelerates the convergence of qs$GW$ calculations, slightly improves the overall accuracy, and is straightforward to implement in existing code., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures (supporting information available)

Abstract

In this work, we develop a mathematical framework for a Selected Configuration Interaction (SCI) algorithm within a bi-orthogonal basis for transcorrelated (TC) calculations. The bi-orthogonal basis used here serves as the equivalent of the standard Hartree Fock (HF) orbitals. However, within the context of TC, it leads to distinct orbitals for the left and right vectors. Our findings indicate that the use of such a bi-orthogonal basis allows for a proper definition of the frozen core approximation. In contrast, the use of HF orbitals results in bad error cancellations for ionization potentials and atomization energies (AE). Compared to HF orbitals, the optimized bi-orthogonal basis significantly reduces the positive part of the second-order energy (PT2), thereby facilitating the use of standard extrapolation techniques of hermitian SCI. While we did not observe a significant improvement in the convergence of the SCI algorithm, this is largely due to the use in the present work of a simple three-body correlation factor introduced in a recent study. This correlation factor, which depends only on atomic parameters, eliminates the need for re-optimization of the correlation factor for molecular systems, making its use straightforward and user-friendly. Despite the simplicity of this correlation factor, we were able to achieve accurate results on the AE of a series of 14 molecules in a triple-zeta basis. We also successfully broke a double bond until the full dissociation limit while maintaining the size consistency property. This work thus demonstrates the potential of the BiO-TC-SCI approach in handling complex molecular systems.

Abstract

International audience; With the increasing availability of data for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM), Deep Learning (DL) techniques are now the subject of considerable attention for this application, often achieving more accurate Remaining Useful Life (RUL) predictions. However, one of the major challenges for DL techniques resides in the difficulty of obtaininglarge amounts of labelled data on industrial systems. To overcome this lack of labelled data, an emerging learning technique is considered in our work: Self-Supervised Learning, a sub-category of unsupervised learning approaches. This paper aims to investigate whether pre-training DL models in a self-supervised way on unlabelled sensors data can be useful for RUL estimation with only Few-Shots Learning, i.e. with scarce labelled data. In this research, a fatigue damage prognostics problem is addressed, through the estimation of the RUL of aluminum alloy panels (typical of aerospace structures) subject to fatigue cracks from strain gauge data. Synthetic datasets composed of strain data are used allowing to extensively investigate the influence of the dataset size on the predictive performance. Results show that the self-supervised pre-trained models are able to significantly outperform the non-pre-trained models in downstream RUL prediction task, and with less computational expense, showing promising results in prognostic tasks when only limited labelled data is available.

Abstract

We report ground- and excited-state dipole moments and oscillator strengths (computed in different ``gauges'' or representations) of full configuration interaction (FCI) quality using the selected configuration interaction method known as \textit{Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively} (CIPSI). Thanks to a set encompassing 35 ground- and excited-state properties computed in 11 small molecules, the present near-FCI estimates allow us to assess the accuracy of high-order coupled-cluster (CC) calculations including up to quadruple excitations. In particular, we show that incrementing the excitation degree of the CC expansion (from CCSD to CCSDT or from CCSDT to CCSDTQ) reduces the average error with respect to the near-FCI reference values by approximately one order of magnitude., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures (supporting information available)

Abstract

We present the analysis of the slowing down exhibited by stochastic dynamics of a ring-exchange model on a square lattice, by means of numerical simulations. We find the preservation of coarse-grained memory of initial state of density-wave types for unexpectedly long times. This behavior is inconsistent with the prediction from a low frequency continuum theory developed by assuming a mean-field solution. Through a detailed analysis of correlation functions of the dynamically active regions, we exhibit an unconventional transient long ranged structure formation in a direction which is featureless for the initial condition, and argue that its slow melting plays a crucial role in the slowing-down mechanism. Abstract

The infinite projected entangled simplex state (iPESS), a type of tensor network (TN) state, has been used successfully for simulating and characterizing {\it non-chiral} spin liquids on the kagome lattice. Here, we demonstrate that iPESS also provides a faithful representation of a {\it chiral} spin liquid (CSL) on the same lattice, namely the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a scalar chirality. By classifying local tensors according to SU$(2)$ and point group symmetries, we construct a chiral ansatz breaking reflection $P$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries while preserving $PT$. The variational TN states are shown to host, for bond dimension $D\ge 8$, a chiral gapless entanglement spectrum following SU$(2)_1$ conformal field theory. The correlation function shows a small weight long-range tail complying with the prediction of the TN bulk-edge correspondence. %{\color{red}With more constraints included, the chiral ansatz is reduced to a non-chiral one which preserves full point group symmetries due to an emergent {\it tensor conservation law} and is of relevance to the ground state at the Heisenberg point. Lastly, by simulations in the complete ansatz family we discuss the transition from the non-chiral spin liquid to the CSL induced by the scalar chirality term.} We identify a non-chiral manifold spanned by only a subset of symmetric tensors where a new emergent {\it tensor conservation law} is realized. This allows us to both probe the stability of the non-chiral spin liquid and discuss its transition to CSL induced by a scalar chirality term.

Abstract

All-electrical writing and reading of spin states attract considerable attention for their promising applications in energy-efficient spintronics devices. Here we show, based on rigorous first-principles calculations, that the spin properties can be manipulated and detected in molecular spinterfaces, where an iron tetraphenyl porphyrin (FeTPP) molecule is deposited on boron-substituted graphene (B-G). Notably, a reversible spin switching between the $S=1$ and $S=3/2$ states is achieved by a gate electrode. We can trace the origin to a strong hybridization between the Fe-$d_{{z}^2}$ and B-$p_z$ orbitals. Combining density functional theory with nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we propose an experimentally feasible 3-terminal setup to probe the spin state. Furthermore, we show how the in-plane quantum transport for the B-G, which is non-spin polarized, can be modified by FeTPP, yielding a significant transport spin polarization near the Fermi energy ($>10\%$ for typical coverage). Our work paves the way to realize all-electrical spintronics devices using molecular spinterfaces., accepted in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

The multipole expansion of a nano-photonic structure's electromagnetic response is a versatile tool to interpret optical effects in nano-optics, but it only gives access to the modes that are excited by a specific illumination. In particular the study of various illuminations requires multiple, costly numerical simulations. Here we present a formalism we call "generalized polarizabilities", in which we combine the recently developed exact multipole decomposition [Alaee et al., Opt. Comms. 407, 17-21 (2018)] with the concept of a generalized field propagator. After an initial computation step, our approach allows to instantaneously obtain the exact multipole decomposition for any illumination. Most importantly, since all possible illuminations are included in the generalized polarizabilities, our formalism allows to calculate the total density of multipole modes, regardless of a specific illumination, which is not possible with the conventional multipole expansion. Finally, our approach directly provides the optimum illumination field distributions that maximally couple to specific multipole modes. The formalism will be very useful for various applications in nano-optics like illumination-field engineering, or meta-atom design e.g. for Huygens metasurfaces. We consider two rubidium atoms, prepared in the same S or P Rydberg states near an optical nanofibre. We determine the van der Waals interaction between them and identify novel features, including the reshaping of the interaction anisotropy and the formation of an interaction potential well near the nanofibre for P states. We attribute these phenomena to the breaking of the rotation symmetry around the interatomic axis due to the presence of the fibre. Abstract

We demonstrate, based on low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy, a pronounced negative differential resistance (NDR) in spin-crossover (SCO) molecular devices, where a Fe$^{\text{II}}$ SCO molecule is deposited on surfaces. The STM measurements reveal that the NDR is robust with respect to substrate materials, temperature, and the number of SCO layers. This indicates that the NDR is intrinsically related to the electronic structure of the SCO molecule. Experimental results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) with non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) calculations and a generic theoretical model. While the DFT+NEGF calculations reproduce NDR for a special atomically-sharp STM tip, the effect is attributed to the energy-dependent tip density of states rather than the molecule itself. We, therefore, propose a Coulomb blockade model involving three molecular orbitals with very different spatial localization as suggested by the molecular electronic structure., Comment: 4 figures

Abstract

Context. Colliding collisionless shocks appear across a broad variety of astrophysical phenomena and are thought to be possible sources of particle acceleration in the Universe. Aims. The main goal of our experimental and computational work is to understand the effect of the interpenetration between two subcritical collisionless shocks on particle energization. Methods. To investigate the detailed dynamics of this phenomenon, we performed a dedicated laboratory experiment. We generated two counter-streaming subcritical collisionless magnetized shocks by irradiating two Teflon (C2F4) targets with 100 J, 1 ns laser beams on the LULI2000 laser facility. The interaction region between the plasma flows was pre-filled with a low-density background hydrogen plasma and initialized with an externally applied homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the shocks. We also modeled the macroscopic evolution of the system via hydrodynamic simulations and the microphysics at play during the interaction via particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Results. Here, we report our measurements of the plasma density and temperature during the formation of the supercritical shocks, their transition to subcritical, and their final interpenetration. We find that in the presence of two shocks, the ambient ions reach energies around 1.5 times of those obtained with single shocks. Both the presence of the downstream zone of the second shock and of the downstream zone common for the two shocks play a role in the different energization: the characteristics of the perpendicular electric fields in the two areas indeed allow for certain particles to continue being accelerated or, at least, to avoid being decelerated. Conclusions. The findings of our laboratory investigation are relevant for our understanding of the energy distribution of high-energy particles that populate the interplanetary space in our solar system and the very local interstellar medium around the heliopause, where observations have indicated evidence of subcritical collisionless shocks that may eventually go on to collide with one another.

Abstract

The uniform electron gas (UEG), a hypothetical system with finite homogenous electron density composed by an infinite number of electrons in a box of infinite volume, is the practical pillar of density-functional theory (DFT) and the foundation of the most acclaimed approximation of DFT, the local-density approximation (LDA). In the last thirty years, the knowledge of analytical parametrizations of the infinite UEG (IUEG) exchange-correlation energy has allowed researchers to perform a countless number of approximate electronic structure calculations for atoms, molecules, and solids. Recently, it has been shown that the traditional concept of the IUEG is not the unique example of UEGs, and systems, in their lowest-energy state, consisting of electrons that are confined to the surface of a sphere provide a new family of UEGs with more customizable properties. Here, we show that, some of the excited states associated with these systems can be classified as transient UEGs (TUEGs) as their electron density is only homogenous for very specific values of the radius of the sphere even though the electronic wave function is not rotationally invariant. Abstract

We study numerically the properties of entanglement of two interacting, or noninteracting, particles evolving in a regime of quantum chaos in the quantum Chirikov standard map. Such pairs can be viewed as interacting, on noninteracting, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs in a regime of quantum chaos. The analysis is done with such tools as the Loschmidt echo of entanglement and the Poincar\'e recurrences of entanglement in presence of absorption. Abstract

We study coherent forward scattering (CFS) in critical disordered systems, whose eigenstates are multifractals. We give general and simple arguments that make it possible to fully characterize the dynamics of the shape and height of the CFS peak. We show that the dynamics is governed by multifractal dimensions $D_1$ and $D_2$, which suggests that CFS could be used as an experimental probe for quantum multifractality. Our predictions are universal and numerically verified in three paradigmatic models of quantum multifractality: Power-law Random Banded Matrices (PRBM), the Ruijsenaars-Schneider ensembles (RS), and the three-dimensional kicked-rotor (3DKR). In the strong multifractal regime, we show analytically that these universal predictions exactly coincide with results from standard perturbation theory applied to the PRBM and RS models., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Due to the coexistence of many emergent phenomena, including 2D superconductivity and a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling, 5d transition metal oxides based two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) have been prospected as one of the potential intrants for modern electronics. However, despite the lighter electron mass, the mobility of carriers, a key requisite for high-performance devices, in 5d-oxides devices remains far behind their 3d-oxides analogs. The carriers mobility in these oxides is significantly hampered by the inevitable presence of defects generated during the growth process. Here, we report very high mobility ($\sim$ 22650 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$) of 5d-2DES confined at the LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ interface. The high mobility, which is beyond the values observed in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and $\gamma$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ systems in the same carrier-density range, is achieved using the ionic-liquid gating at room temperature. We postulate that the ionic-liquid gating affects the oxygen vacancies and efficiently reduces any disorder at the interface. Investigating density and mobility in a broad range of back-gate voltage, we reveal that the mobility follows the power-law $\mu \propto n^{1.2}$, indicating the very high quality of ionic-liquid-gated LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ devices, consistent with our postulate. Further, the analysis of the quantum oscillations measured in high magnetic fields confirms that the high-mobility electrons occupy the electronic sub-bands emerging from the Ta:5d orbitals of KTaO$_3$., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Using theories of phase ordering kinetics and of renormalization group, we derive analytically the relaxation times of the long wave-length fluctuations of a phase-separated domain boundary in the vicinity of (and below) the critical temperature, in the planar Ising universality class. For a conserved order parameter, the relaxation time grows like $\Lambda^3$ at wave-length $\Lambda$ and can be expressed in terms of parameters relevant at the microscopic scale: lattice spacing, bulk diffusion coefficient of the minority phase, and temperature. These results are supported by numerical simulations of 2D Ising models, enabling in addition to calculate the non-universal numerical prefactor. Abstract

A strong potential gain for space applications is expected from the anticipated performances of inertial sensors based on cold atom interferometry (CAI) that measure the acceleration of freely falling independent atoms by manipulating them with laser light. In this context, CNES and its partners initiated a phase 0 study, called CARIOQA, in order to develop a Quantum Pathfinder Mission unlocking key features of atom interferometry for space and paving the way for future ambitious space missions utilizing this technology. As a cornerstone for the implementation of quantum sensors in space, the CARIOQA phase 0 aimed at defining the Quantum Pathfinder Mission's scenario and associated performance objectives. To comply with these objectives, the payload architecture has been designed to achieve long interrogation time and active rotation compensation on a BEC-based atom interferometer. A study of the satellite architecture, including all the subsystems, has been conducted. Several technical solutions for propulsion and attitude control have been investigated in order to guarantee optimal operating conditions (limitation of micro-vibrations, maximization of measurement time). We propose a complex network approach to the harmonic structure underpinning western tonal music. From a database of Beethoven's string quartets, we construct a directed network whose nodes are musical chords and edges connect chords following each other. We show that the network is scale-free and has specific properties when ranking algorithms are applied. We explore its community structure and its musical interpretation, and propose statistical measures stemming from network theory allowing to distinguish stylistically between periods of composition. Abstract

We derive effective-mass electron Hamiltonian for a N\'eel antiferromagnet in the presence of a smooth texture of the staggered magnetization. For certain locations of electron band extrema, the texture produces a peculiar and anomalously strong spin-orbit coupling of the scale $\hbar v / L$, with $v$ the Fermi velocity and $L$ the characteristic length scale of the texture. For a Skyrmion texture, this coupling generates electron bound states, whose energy scale is given by the gap $\Delta$ in the electron spectrum. With dopant carriers, such bound states turn the Skyrmion into a charged particle, that can be manipulated by electric field., Comment: Contribution to the collection in honor of Emmanuel I. Abstract

We investigate the impact of mechanical strain, stacking order, and external electric fields on the magnetic interactions of a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure in which a 2D ferromagnetic metallic Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ monolayer is deposited on germanene. Three distinct computational approaches based on \textit{ab initio} methods are used, and a careful comparison is given: (i) The Green's function method, (ii) the generalized Bloch theorem, and (iii) the supercell approach. First, the shell-resolved exchange constants are calculated for the three Fe atoms within the unit cell of the freestanding Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ monolayer. We find that the results between methods (i) and (ii) are in good qualitative agreement and also with previously reported values. An electric field of ${\cal E}= \pm 0.5$~V/{\AA} applied perpendicular to the Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$/germanene heterostructure leads to significant changes of the exchange constants. We show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$/germanene is mainly dominated by the nearest neighbors, resulting in a good quantitative agreement between methods (i) and (ii). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the DMI is highly tunable by strain, stacking, and electric field, leading to a large DMI comparable to that of ferromagnetic/heavy metal (FM/HM) interfaces. The geometrical change and hybridization effect explain the origin of the high tunability of the DMI at the interface. The electric-field driven DMI obtained by method (iii) is in qualitative agreement with the more accurate \textit{ab initio} method used in approach (ii). However, the field-effect on the DMI is overestimated by method (iii) by about 50\%. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy can also be drastically changed by the application of compressive or tensile strain in the Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$/germanene heterostructure., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Implementation of the hardcore-dimer Hilbert space in cold Rydberg-atom simulators opens a new route of investigating real-time dynamics of dimer liquids under Hamiltonian quench. Here, we consider an initial Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) state on the square lattice realizing a critical Coulomb phase with algebraic and dipolar correlations. Using its representation as a special point of a broad manifold of SU($2$)-symmetric, translationnally invariant, Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), we compute its non-equilibrium dynamics upon turning on inter-site Heisenberg interactions. We show that projecting the time-evolution onto the PEPS manifold remains accurate at small time scales. We also find that the state evolves within a PEPS sub-manifold characterized by a U($1$) gauge symmetry, suggesting that the Coulomb phase is stable under such unitary evolution., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures. Abstract

Numerical simulators are widely used to model physical phenomena and global sensitivity analysis (GSA) aims at studying the global impact of the input uncertainties on the simulator output. To perform GSA, statistical tools based on inputs/output dependence measures are commonly used. We focus here on the Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC). Sometimes, the probability distributions modeling the uncertainty of inputs may be themselves uncertain and it is important to quantify their impact on GSA results. We call it here the second-level global sensitivity analysis (GSA2). However, GSA2, when performed with a Monte Carlo double-loop, requires a large number of model evaluations, which is intractable with CPU time expensive simulators. To cope with this limitation, we propose a new statistical methodology based on a Monte Carlo single-loop with a limited calculation budget. First, we build a unique sample of inputs and simulator outputs, from a well-chosen probability distribution of inputs. From this sample, we perform GSA for various assumed probability distributions of inputs by using weighted HSIC measures estimators. Statistical properties of these weighted estimators are demonstrated. Subsequently, we define 2 nd-level HSICbased measures between the distributions of inputs and GSA results, which constitute GSA2 indices. The efficiency of our GSA2 methodology is illustrated on an analytical example, thereby comparing several technical options. Abstract

We introduce the bosonic and fermionic ensembles of density matrices and study their entanglement. In the fermionic case, we show that random bipartite fermionic density matrices have non-positive partial transposition, hence they are typically entangled. The similar analysis in the bosonic case is more delicate, due to a large positive outlier eigenvalue. We compute the asymptotic ratio between the size of the environment and the size of the system Hilbert space for which random bipartite bosonic density matrices fail the PPT criterion, being thus entangled. Abstract

We propose a simple and efficient real-space approach for the calculation of the ground-state energies of Wigner crystals in 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. To be precise, we calculate the first two terms in the asymptotic expansion of the total energy per electron which correspond to the classical energy and the harmonic correction due to the zero-point motion of the Wigner crystals, respectively. Our approach employs Clifford periodic boundary conditions to simulate the infinite electron gas and a renormalized distance to evaluate the Coulomb potential. This allows us to calculate the energies unambiguously and with a higher precision than those reported in the literature. Our results are in agreement with the literature values with the exception of harmonic correction of the 2-dimensional Wigner crystal for which we find a significant difference. Although we focus on the ground state, i.e., the triangular lattice and the body-centered cubic lattice, in two and three dimensions, respectively, we also report the classical energies of several other common lattice structures., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present the discovery of two new transiting extrasolar planet candidates identified as TOI-1296.01 and TOI-1298.01 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planetary nature of these candidates has been secured with the SOPHIE high-precision spectrograph through the measurement of the companion’s mass with the radial velocity method. Both planets are similar to Saturn in mass and have similar orbital periods of a few days. They, however, show discrepant radii and therefore different densities. The radius discrepancy might be explained by the different levels of irradiation by the host stars. The subgiant star TOI-1296 hosts a low-density planet with 1.2 RJup while the less luminous, lower-size star TOI-1298 hosts a much denser planet with a 0.84 RJup radius, resulting in bulk densities of 0.198 and 0.743 g cm−3, respectively.In addition, both stars are strongly enriched in heavy elements, having metallicities of +0.44 and +0.49 dex, respectively. The planet masses and orbital periods are 0.298 ± 0.039 MJup and 3.9443715 ± 5.8 ± 10−6 days for TOI-1296b, and 0.356 ± 0.032 MJup and 4.537164 ± 1.2 ± 10−5 days for TOI-1298b. The mass measurements have a relative precision of better than 13%.

Abstract

Optical interactions have an important impact on the optical response of nanostructures in complex environments. Accounting for interactions in large ensembles of structures requires computationally demanding numerical calculations. In particular if no periodicity can be exploited, full field simulations can become prohibitively expensive. Here we propose a method for the numerical description of aperiodic assemblies of plasmonic nanostructures. Our approach is based on dressed polarizabilities, which are conventionally very expensive to calculate, a problem which we alleviate using a deep convolutional neural network as surrogate model. We demonstrate that the method offers high accuracy with errors in the order of a percent. In cases where the interactions are predominantly short-range, e.g. for out-of-plane illumination of planar metasurfaces, it can be used to describe aperiodic metasurfaces of basically unlimited size, containing many thousands of unordered plasmonic nanostructures. We furthermore show that the model is capable to spectrally resolve coupling effects. The approach is therefore of highest interest for the field of metasurfaces. Abstract

Methods able to simultaneously account for both static and dynamic electron correlations have often been employed, not only to model photochemical events, but also to provide reference values for vertical transition energies, hence allowing to benchmark lower-order models. In this category, both CASPT2 and NEVPT2 are certainly popular, the latter presenting the advantage of not requiring the application of the empirical ionization-potential-electron-affinity (IPEA) and level shifts. However, the actual accuracy of these multiconfigurational approaches is not settled yet. In this context, to assess the performances of these approaches the present work relies on highly-accurate ($\pm 0.03$ eV) \emph{aug}-cc-pVTZ vertical transition energies for 284 excited states of diverse character (174 singlet, 110 triplet, 206 valence, 78 Rydberg, 78 $n \to \pi^*$, 119 $\pi \to \pi^*$, and 9 double excitations) determined in 35 small- to medium-sized organic molecules containing from three to six non-hydrogen atoms. The CASPT2 calculations are performed with and without IPEA shift and compared to the partially-contracted (PC) and strongly-contracted (SC) variants of NEVPT2. We find that both CASPT2 with IPEA shift and PC-NEVPT2 provide fairly reliable vertical transition energy estimates, with slight overestimations and mean absolute errors of $0.11$ and $0.13$ eV, respectively. These values are found to be rather uniform for the various subgroups of transitions. The present work completes our previous benchmarks focussed on single-reference wave function methods (\textit{J.~Chem. Theory Comput.} \textbf{14}, 4360 (2018); \emph{ibid.}, \textbf{16}, 1711 (2020)), hence allowing for a fair comparison between various families of electronic structure methods. In particular, we show that ADC(2), CCSD, and CASPT2 deliver similar accuracies for excited states with a dominant single-excitation character., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure (supporting information available)

Abstract

A magnetic field parallel to an electrical current does not produce a Lorentz force on the charge carriers. Therefore, orbital longitudinal magnetoresistance is unexpected. Here we report on the observation of a large and non saturating magnetoresistance in lightly doped SrTiO$_{3-x}$ independent of the relative orientation of current and magnetic field. We show that this quasi-isotropic magnetoresistance can be explained if the carrier mobility along all orientations smoothly decreases with magnetic field. This anomalous regime is restricted to low concentrations when the dipolar correlation length is longer than the distance between carriers. We identify cyclotron motion of electrons in a potential landscape tailored by polar domains as the cradle of quasi-isotropic orbital magnetoresistance. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the Wigner localization of two interacting electrons at very low density in two and three dimensions using the exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. We use our recently developed method based on Clifford periodic boundary conditions with a renormalized distance in the Coulomb potential. To accurately represent the electronic wave function, we use a regular distribution in space of Gaussian-type orbitals and we take advantage of the translational symmetry of the system to efficiently calculate the electronic wave function. We are thus able to accurately describe the wave function up to very low density. We validate our approach by comparing our results to a semi-classical model that becomes exact in the low-density limit. With our approach, we are able to observe the Wigner localization without ambiguity.

Abstract

We consider a situation when evolution of an entangled Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pair takes place in a regime of quantum chaos being chaotic in the classical limit. This situation is studied on an example of chaotic pair dynamics described by the quantum Chirikov standard map. The time evolution is reversible even if a presence of small errors breaks time reversal of classical dynamics due to exponential growth of errors induced by exponential chaos instability. However, the quantum evolution remains reversible since a quantum dynamics instability exists only on a logarithmically short Ehrenfest time scale. We show that due to EPR pair entanglement a measurement of one particle at the moment of time reversal breaks exact time reversal of another particle which demonstrates only an approximate time reversibility. This result is interpreted in the framework of the Schmidt decomposition and Feynman path integral formulation of quantum mechanics. The time reversal in this system has already been realized with cold atoms in kicked optical lattices in absence of entanglement and measurements. On the basis of the obtained results we argue that the experimental investigations of time reversal of chaotic EPR pairs is within reach of present cold atom capabilities., Comment: 15 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

We study a one-dimensional Bose gas with two internal states described by the Yang-Gaudin model and calculate analytically the dispersion relation of a polaron quasiparticle, which is the lowest excitation branch. We study the dispersion in the thermodynamic limit in the regimes of weak and strong interaction without limitations on the momentum. At weak interaction the polaron dispersion is in the vicinity of the dark soliton one; we calculate the leading deviation in the parametric form. At strong interaction we find an ansatz for the explicit form of the polaron dispersion. It has the form of a power series of the sine function of the momentum with interaction-dependent coefficients. By increasing the power of the series, the corresponding coefficients show faster decay and thus one practically needs only a few of them; we give the results for the first three. The coefficients of the series are connected to the Maclaurin series of the polaron dispersion and thus it is sufficient to calculate latter quantity to automatically find the power series result for the dispersion at all momenta. The derived results for the dispersion can be used to obtain explicit expressions for the exponents of the power-law singularities in the response functions at the spectral edge., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Like adiabatic time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT), the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) formalism of many-body perturbation theory, in its static approximation, is "blind" to double (and higher) excitations, which are ubiquitous, for example, in conjugated molecules like polyenes. Here, we apply the spin-flip \textit{ansatz} (which considers the lowest triplet state as the reference configuration instead of the singlet ground state) to the BSE formalism in order to access, in particular, double excitations. The present scheme is based on a spin-unrestricted version of the $GW$ approximation employed to compute the charged excitations and screened Coulomb potential required for the BSE calculations. Dynamical corrections to the static BSE optical excitations are taken into account via an unrestricted generalization of our recently developed (renormalized) perturbative treatment. The performance of the present spin-flip BSE formalism is illustrated by computing excited-state energies of the beryllium atom, the hydrogen molecule at various bond lengths, and cyclobutadiene in its rectangular and square-planar geometries., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures and 3 tables

Abstract

International audience; Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) as novel phases of matter with long-range entanglement and deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) as descriptions for unconventional phase transitions between two ordered states beyond the standard paradigm, such as the transition between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence-bond solid (VBS) phases, are two representative emerging phenomena. These implications for understanding correlated materials and developing theoretical frameworks for many-body physics are of crucial importance. Here, we show that a gapless QSL can naturally emerge from a DQCP. Via large-scale tensor network simulations of a square-lattice spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model, both QSL-state and DQCP-type AFM-VBS transitions are observed. By tuning the coupling constants, the AFM-VBS transition vanishes, and instead, a gapless QSL phase gradually develops in between. Remarkably, along the phase boundaries of AFM-QSL and QSL-VBS transitions, we always observe the same correlation-length exponents, ν≈1.0, which is intrinsically different from the one of the DQCP-type transition, indicating new types of universality classes. Our results explicitly demonstrate a new scenario for understanding the emergence of gapless QSL from an underlying DQCP. The discovered QSL phase survives in a large region of tuning parameters, and we expect its experimental realization in solid-state materials or quantum simulators.

Abstract

In this work, we characterize the amount of steerability present in quantum theory by connecting the maximal violation of a steering inequality to an inclusion problem of free spectrahedra. In particular, we show that the maximal violation of an arbitrary unbiased dichotomic steering inequality is given by the inclusion constants of the matrix cube, which is a well-studied object in convex optimization theory. This allows us to find new upper bounds on the maximal violation of steering inequalities and to show that previously obtained violations are optimal. In order to do this, we prove lower bounds on the inclusion constants of the complex matrix cube, which might be of independent interest. Finally, we show that the inclusion constants of the matrix cube and the matrix diamond are the same. This allows us to derive new bounds on the amount of incompatibility available in dichotomic quantum measurements in fixed dimension., Comment: Final version: 30 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

pyGDM is a python toolkit for electro-dynamical simulations of individual nano-structures, based on the Green Dyadic Method (GDM). pyGDM uses the concept of a generalized propagator, which allows to solve cost-efficiently monochromatic problems with a large number of varying illumination conditions such as incident angle scans or focused beam raster-scan simulations. We provide an overview of new features added since the initial publication [Wiecha, Computer Physics Communications 233, pp.167-192 (2018)]. The updated version of pyGDM is implemented in pure python, removing the former dependency on fortran-based binaries. In the course of this re-write, the toolkit's internal architecture has been completely redesigned to offer a much wider range of possibilities to the user such as the choice of the dyadic Green's functions describing the environment. A new class of dyads allows to perform 2D simulations of infinitely long nanostructures. While the Green's dyads in pyGDM are based on a quasistatic description for interfaces, we also provide as new external python package pyGDM2_retard a module with retarded Green's tensors for an environment with two interfaces. We have furthermore added functionalities for simulations using fast-electron excitation, namely electron energy loss spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence. Along with several further new tools and improvements, the update includes also the possibility to calculate the magnetic field and the magnetic LDOS inside nanostructures, field-gradients in- and outside a nanoparticle, optical forces or the chirality of nearfields. Abstract

The Extended Koopman's Theorem (EKT) provides a straightforward way to compute charged excitations from any level of theory. In this work we make the link with the many-body effective energy theory (MEET) that we derived to calculate the spectral function, which is directly related to photoemission spectra. In particular, we show that at its lowest level of approximation the MEET removal and addition energies correspond to the so-called diagonal approximation of the EKT. Thanks to this link, the EKT and the MEET can benefit from mutual insight. In particular, one can readily extend the EKT to calculate the full spectral function, and choose a more optimal basis set for the MEET by solving the EKT secular equation. We illustrate these findings with the examples of the Hubbard dimer and bulk silicon., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present an experimental study of the dynamics following the photo-excitation and subsequent photo-ionization of single Cs atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets. The dynamics of excited-Cs-atom desorption and re-adsorption as well as CsHe exciplex formation are measured using femtosecond pump-probe velocity-map-imaging spectroscopy and ion-time-of-flight spectrometry. The timescales for the desorption of excited Cs atoms off helium nanodroplets as well as the timescales for CsHe exciplex formation are experimentally determined for the 6p states of Cs. For the 6p $^2\Pi_ {1/2}$ state, our results confirm that the excited Cs atoms only desorb from the nanodroplet when the excitation wavenumber is blue-shifted from the $6p\,^2\Pi_ {1/2} \leftarrow 6s\,^2\Sigma_ {1/2}$ resonance. Our results suggest that the dynamics following excitation to the 6p $^2\Pi_ {3/2}$ state can be described by an evaporation-like desorption mechanism, whereas the dynamics arising from excitation to the 6p $^2\Sigma_ {1/2}$ state is indicative for a more impulsive desorption process. Furthermore, our results suggest a helium-induced spin-orbit relaxation from the the 6p $^2\Sigma_ {1/2}$ state to the 6p $^2\Pi_ {1/2}$ state. Our findings largely agree with the results of time-dependent $^4$He-density-functional theory (DFT) simulations published earlier [Coppens et al., Eur. Phys. J. D 73, 94 (2019)].

Abstract

In cell membranes, proteins and lipids are organized into sub-micrometric nanodomains of varying size, shape and composition, performing specific functions. Despite their biological importance, the detailed morphology of these nanodomains remains unknown. Not only can they hardly be observed by conventional microscopy due to their small size, but there is no full consensus on the theoretical models to describe their structuring and their shapes. Here, we use a combination of analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations based upon a model coupling membrane composition and shape to show that increasing protein concentration leads to an elongation of membrane nanodomains. The results are corroborated by Single Particle Tracking measurements on HIV receptors, whose level of expression in the membrane of specifically designed living cells can be tuned. These findings highlight that protein abundance can modulate nanodomain shape and potentially their biological function. Abstract

We report on a time scaling technique to enhance the performances of quantum protocols in non-Hermitian systems. The considered time scaling involves no extra-couplings and yields a significant enhancement of the quantum fidelity for a comparable amount of resources. We discuss the application of this technique to quantum state transfers in 2 and 3-level open quantum systems. We derive the quantum speed limit in a system governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Interestingly, we show that, with an appropriate driving, the time-scaling technique preserves the optimality of the quantum speed with respect to the quantum speed limit while reducing significantly the damping of the quantum state norm.

Abstract

While classical spin systems in random networks have been intensively studied, much less is known about quantum magnets in random graphs. Here, we investigate interacting quantum spins on small-world networks, building on mean-field theory and extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Starting from one-dimensional (1D) rings, we consider two situations: all-to-all interacting and long-range interactions randomly added. The effective infinite dimension of the lattice leads to a magnetic ordering at finite temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ with mean-field criticality. Nevertheless, in contrast to the classical case, we find two distinct power-law behaviors for $T_\mathrm{c}$ versus the average strength of the extra couplings. This is controlled by a competition between a characteristic length scale of the random graph and the thermal correlation length of the underlying 1D system, thus challenging mean-field theories. Abstract

The statistics of gap ratios between consecutive energy levels is a widely used tool, in particular in the context of many-body physics, to distinguish between chaotic and integrable systems, described respectively by Gaussian ensembles of random matrices and Poisson statistics. In this work we extend the study of the gap ratio distribution P(r) to the case where discrete symmetries are present. This is important, since in certain situations it may be very impractical, or impossible, to split the model into symmetry sectors, let alone in cases where the symmetry is not known in the first place. Starting from the known expressions for surmises in the Gaussian ensembles, we derive analytical surmises for random matrices comprised of several independent blocks. We check our formulae against simulations from large random matrices, showing excellent agreement. We then present a large set of applications in many-body physics, ranging from quantum clock models and anyonic chains to periodically-driven spin systems. In all these models the existence of a (sometimes hidden) symmetry can be diagnosed through the study of the spectral gap ratios, and our approach furnishes an efficient way to characterize the number and size of independent symmetry subspaces. Abstract

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) constitute a versatile platform for atomically thin optoelectronics devices and spin-valley memory applications. In monolayers optical absorption is strong, but the transition energy is not tunable as the neutral exciton has essentially no out-of-plane electric dipole. In contrast, interlayer exciton transitions in heterobilayers are widely tunable in applied electric fields, but their coupling to light is considerably reduced. Here, we show tuning over 120 meV of interlayer excitons with high oscillator strength in bilayer MoS2. These shifts are due to the quantum confined Stark effect, here the electron is localised to one of the layers yet the hole is delocalised across the bilayer. We optically probe the interaction between intra- and interlayer excitons as they are energetically tuned into resonance. This allows studying their mixing supported by beyond standard density functional theory calculations including excitonic effects. In MoS2 trilayers our experiments uncover two types of interlayer excitons with and without in-built electric dipoles, respectively. Highly tunable excitonic transitions with large oscillator strength and in-built dipoles, that lead to considerable exciton-exciton interactions, hold great promise for non-linear optics with polaritons., Comment: final author version

Abstract

The quasi-2D metal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is one of the best characterized unconventional superconductors, yet the nature of its superconducting order parameter is still highly debated. This information is crucial to determine the pairing mechanism of Cooper pairs. Here we use ultrasound velocity to probe the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. This thermodynamic probe is symmetry-sensitive and can help to identify the superconducting order symmetry. Indeed, we observe a sharp jump in the shear elastic constant $c_{66}$ as the temperature is raised across the superconducting transition at $T_c$. This directly implies that the superconducting order parameter is of a two-component nature. Based on symmetry argument and given the other known properties of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we discuss what states are compatible with this requirement and propose that the two-component order parameter, namely $\lbrace d_{xz}; d_{yz} \rbrace$, is the most likely candidate.
