In 2021 BL Lacertae underwent an extraordinary activity phase, which was intensively followed by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) Collaboration. We present the WEBT optical data in the BVRI bands acquired at 36 observatories around the world. In mid 2021 the source showed its historical maximum, with R = 11.14. The light curves display many episodes of intraday variability, whose amplitude increases with source brightness, in agreement with a geometrical interpretation of the long-term flux behaviour. This is also supported by the long-term spectral variability, with an almost achromatic trend with brightness. In contrast, short-term variations are found to be strongly chromatic and are ascribed to energetic processes in the jet. We also analyse the optical polarimetric behaviour, finding evidence of a strong correlation between the intrinsic fast variations in flux density and those in polarisation degree, with a time delay of about 13 h. This suggests a common physical origin. The overall behaviour of the source can be interpreted as the result of two mechanisms: variability on time scales greater than several days is likely produced by orientation effects, while either shock waves propagating in the jet, or magnetic reconnection, possibly induced by kink instabilities in the jet, can explain variability on shorter time scales. The latter scenario could also account for the appearance of quasi-periodic oscillations, with periods from a few days to a few hours, during outbursts, when the jet is more closely aligned with our line of sight and the time scales are shortened by relativistic effects., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, submitted to MNRAS

This makes it an ideal laboratory for studying the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation with a great level of detail and signal-to-noise. In this Letter we present new mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopic data with an angular resolution of 0.4″ (∼300 pc) obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias instrument CanariCam. The N-band (8–13 μm) spectrum of the central ∼400 pc of the galaxy reveals [S IV]λ10.51 μm emission, but no 8.6 or 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features, which are commonly used as tracers of recent star formation. This is in stark contrast with the presence of a nuclear starburst of ∼300 pc in size, an age of 6 Myr, and a mass of 1.1×108 M⊙, as constrained from ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope observations. Considering this, we argue that even the more resilient, neutral molecules that mainly produce the 11.3 μm PAH band are most likely being destroyed in the vicinity of the active nucleus despite the relatively large X-ray column density, log NH = 23.5 cm−2, and modest X-ray luminosity, 1.5×1043 erg s−1. Among the low-mass pre-main sequence stars, a small group called FU Orionis-type objects (FUors) are notable for undergoing powerful accretion outbursts. V1057 Cyg, a classical example of an FUor, went into outburst around 1969-1970, after which it faded rapidly, making it the fastest fading FUor known. Around 1995, a more rapid increase in fading occurred. Since that time, strong photometric modulations have been present. We present nearly 10 years of source monitoring at Piszk\'estet\H{o} Observatory, complemented with optical/near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy from the Nordic Optical Telescope, Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Our light curves show continuation of significant quasi-periodic variability in brightness over the past decade. Our spectroscopic observations show strong wind features, shell features, and forbidden emission lines. All of these spectral lines vary with time. The emission from the relativistic jets in blazars usually outshines their host galaxies, challenging the determination of their distances and the characterization of the stellar population. The situation becomes more favorable in the case of the extreme blazars (EHBLs), for which the bulk of the emission of the relativistic jets is emitted at higher energies, unveiling the optical emission from the host galaxy. The distance determination is fundamental for the study of the intrinsic characteristics of the blazars, especially to estimate the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra distorted due to the interaction with the Extragalactic Background Light. In this work we report on the properties of 2WHSP~J073326.7+515354 host galaxy in the optical band, which is one of the few EHBLs detected at TeV energies. We present the first measurement of the distance of the source, $\mathrm{z}=0.06504\pm0.00002$ (velocity dispersion $\sigma=237 \pm 9\,\mathrm{km s^{-1}}$). We also perform a detailed study of the stellar population of its host galaxy. We find that the mass-weighted mean stellar age is $11.72\pm0.06\,\mathrm{Gyr}$ and the mean metallicity $[M/H]=0.159 \pm 0.016$. In addition, a morphological study of the host galaxy is also carried out. The surface brightness distribution is modelled by a composition of a dominant classical bulge ($R_e=3.77\pm1\arcsec $ or equivalently 4.74~kpc) plus an unresolved source which corresponds to the active nucleus. The black hole mass is estimated using both the mass relation with the velocity dispersion and the absolute magnitude from the bulge yielding comparable results: $(4.8\pm0.9)\times10^8\,M_{\odot}$ and $(3.7\pm1.0)\times10^8\,M_{\odot}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The feeble radiative efficiency characteristic of Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGN) is ascribed to a sub-Eddington accretion rate, typically at $\log(L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm edd}) \lesssim -3$. At the finest angular resolutions that are attainable nowadays using mid-infrared (mid-IR) interferometry, the prototypical LLAGN in NGC 1052 remains unresolved down to $< 5\, \rm{mas}$ ($0.5\, \rm{pc}$). This is in line with non-thermal emission from a compact jet, a scenario further supported by a number of evidences: the broken power-law shape of the continuum distribution in the radio-to-UV range; the $\sim 4\%$ degree of polarisation measured in the nuclear mid-IR continuum, together with the mild optical extinction ($A_V \sim 1\, \rm{mag}$); and the "harder when brighter" behaviour of the X-ray spectrum, indicative of self-Compton synchrotron radiation. A remarkable feature is the steepness of the IR-to-UV core continuum, characterised by a power-law index of $\sim 2.6$, as compared to the canonical value of $0.7$. Alternatively, to explain the interferometric data by thermal emission would require an exceptionally compact dust distribution when compared to those observed in nearby AGN, with $A_V \gtrsim 2.8\, \rm{mag}$ to account for the IR polarisation. This is in contrast with several observational evidences against a high extinction along the line of sight, including the detection of the nucleus in the UV range and the well defined shape of the power-law continuum. The case of NGC 1052 shows that compact jets can dominate the nuclear emission in LLAGN across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, a scenario that might be common among this class of active nuclei., Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We studied the Class I protostar 2MASS 22352345+7517076 whose dramatic brightening between the IRAS, Akari, and WISE surveys was reported by Onozato et al. (2015). 2MASS 22352345+7517076 is a member of a small group of low-mass young stellar objects, associated with IRAS 22343+7501 in the molecular cloud Lynds 1251. The IRAS, ISO, Spitzer, Akari, Herschel, and WISE missions observed different stages of its outburst. Supplemented these data with archival and our own near-infrared observations, and considering the contributions of neighbouring sources to the mid-infrared fluxes we studied the nature and environment of the outbursting object, and its photometric variations from 1983 to 2017. The low-state bolometric luminosity Lbol ~ 32 Lsun is indicative of a 100000-200000 years old protostar of 1.6-1.8 solar masses. Its 2-micron brightness started rising between 1993 and 1998, reached a peak in 2009-2011, and started declining in 2015. Changes in the spectral energy distribution suggest that the outburst was preceded by a decade-long, slow brightening in the near-infrared. The actual accretion burst occurred between 2004 and 2007. We fitted the spectral energy distribution in the bright phases with simple accretion disc models. The modelling suggested an increase of the disc accretion rate from some 3.5\times 10^{-7} Msun yr^{-1} to 1.1 \times 10^{-4} Msun yr^{-1}. The central star accreted nearly 10^{-3} solar masses, about a Jupiter mass during the ten years of the outburst. We observed H_2 emission lines in the K-band spectrum during the fading phase in 2017. The associated optical nebulosity RNO 144 and the Herbig-Haro object HH 149 have not exhibited significant variation in shape and brightness during the outburst., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. If the disappearance of the broad emission lines observed in changing-look quasars were caused by the obscuration of the quasar core through moving dust clouds in the torus, high linear polarization typical of type 2 quasars would be expected. We measured the polarization of the changing-look quasar J1011+5442 in which the broad emission lines have disappeared between 2003 and 2015. We found a polarization degree compatible with null polarization. This measurement suggests that the observed change of look is not due to a change of obscuration hiding the continuum source and the broad line region, and that the quasar is seen close to the system axis. Our results thus support the idea that the vanishing of the broad emission lines in J1011+5442 is due to an intrinsic dimming of the ionizing continuum source that is most likely caused by a rapid decrease in the rate of accretion onto the supermassive black hole., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

HBC 722 (V2493 Cyg) is a young eruptive star in outburst since 2010. It is an FU Orionis-type object with an atypically low outburst luminosity. Because it was well characterized in the pre-outburst phase, HBC 722 is one of the few FUors where we can learn about the physical changes and processes associated with the eruption. We monitored the source in the BVRIJHKs bands from the ground, and at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m from space with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We analyzed the light curves and the spectral energy distribution by fitting a series of steady accretion disk models at many epochs. We also analyzed the spectral properties of the source based on new optical and infrared spectra. We also mapped HBC 722 and its surroundings at millimeter wavelengths. From the light curve analysis we concluded that the first peak of the outburst in 2010 September was due to an abrupt increase of the accretion rate in the innermost part of the system. This was followed by a long term process, when the brightening was mainly due to a gradual increase of the accretion rate and the emitting area. Our new observations show that the source is currently in a constant plateau phase. We found that around the peak the continuum was bluer and the H$\alpha$ profile changed significantly between 2012 and 2013. The source was not detected in the millimeter continuum, but we discovered a flattened molecular gas structure with a diameter of 1700 au and mass of 0.3 M$_{\odot}$ centered on HBC 722. While the first brightness peak could be interpreted as a rapid fall of piled-up material from the inner disk onto the star, the later monotonic flux rise suggests the outward expansion of a hot component according to the theory of Bell & Lin (1994). Our study of HBC 722 demonstrated that accretion-related outbursts can occur in young stellar objects even with very low mass disks, in the late Class II phase., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 online tables. [Context]: Obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to be very common in the Universe. Observations and surveys have shown that the number of sources increases for near galaxies and at the low-luminosity regime (the so-called LLAGNs). Furthermore, many AGNs show changes in their obscuration properties at X-rays that may suggest a configuration of clouds very close to the accretion disk. However, these variations could also be due to changes in the intrinsic continuum of the source. It is therefore important to study nearby AGN to better understand the locus and distribution of clouds in the neighbourhood of the nucleus. [Aims]: We aim to study the nuclear obscuration of LLAGN NGC 835 and its extended emission using mid-infrared observations. [Methods]: We present sub-arcsecond-resolution mid-infrared 11.5 μm imaging of the LLAGN galaxy NGC 835 obtained with the instrument CanariCam in the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), archival Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy, and archival Chandra data observed in 2000, 2008, and 2013. [Results]: The GTC/CanariCam 11.5 μm image reveals faint extended emission out to ~6 arcsec. We obtained a nuclear flux of F(11.5 μm) ~ 18 mJy, whereas the extended emission accounts for 90% of the total flux within the 6 arcsec. This means that the low angular resolution (~4 arcsec) IRS spectrum is dominated by this extended emission and not by the AGN. This is clearly seen in the Spitzer/IRS spectrum, which resembles that of star-forming galaxies. Although the extended soft X-ray emission shows some resemblance with that of the mid-infrared, the knots seen at X-rays are mostly located in the inner side of this mid-infrared emission. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the source has undergone a spectral change between 2000/2008 and 2013. We argue that this variation is most probably due to changes in the hydrogen column density from ~8 × 10 cm to ~3 × 10 cm. Optical and near-infrared variability is a well-known property of young stellar objects. However, a growing number of recent studies claim that a considerable fraction of them also exhibit mid-infrared flux changes. With the aim of studying and interpreting variability on a decadal timescale, here we present a mid-infrared spectral atlas containing observations of 68 low- and intermediate mass young stellar objects. The atlas consists of 2.5-11.6 um low-resolution spectra obtained with the ISOPHOT-S instrument on-board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) between 1996 and 1998, as well as 5.2-14.5 um low-resolution spectra obtained with the IRS instrument on-board the Spitzer Space Telescope between 2004 and 2007. The observations were retrieved from the ISO and Spitzer archives and were post-processed interactively by our own routines. For those 47 objects where multi-epoch spectra were available, we analyze mid-infrared spectral variability on annual and/or decadal timescales. We identify 37 variable candidate sources. Many stars show wavelength-independent flux changes, possibly due to variable accretion rate. In several systems, all exhibiting 10 um silicate emission, the variability of the 6-8 um continuum and the silicate feature exhibit different amplitudes. A possible explanation is variable shadowing of the silicate emitting region by an inner disk structure of changing height or extra silicate emission from dust clouds in the disk atmosphere. Our results suggest that mid-infrared variability, in particular the wavelength-dependent changes, are more ubiquitous than was known before. The inner structure of AGNs is expected to change below a certain luminosity limit. The big blue bump, footprint of the accretion disk, is absent for the majority of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). Moreover, recent simulations suggest that the torus, a keystone in the Unified Model, vanishes for nuclei with L_bol < 10^42 erg/s. However, the study of LLAGN is a complex task due to the contribution of the host galaxy, which light swamps these faint nuclei. This is specially critical in the IR range, at the maximum of the torus emission, due to the contribution of the old stellar population and/or dust in the nuclear region. Adaptive optics imaging in the NIR (VLT/NaCo) together with diffraction limited imaging in the mid-IR (VLT/VISIR) permit us to isolate the nuclear emission for some of the nearest LLAGNs in the Southern Hemisphere. These data were extended to the optical/UV range (HST), radio (VLA, VLBI) and X-rays (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Integral), in order to build a genuine spectral energy distribution (SED) for each AGN with a consistent spatial resolution (< 0.5") across the whole spectral range. From the individual SEDs, we construct an average SED for LLAGNs sampled in all the wavebands mentioned before. Compared with previous multiwavelength studies of LLAGNs, this work covers the mid-IR and NIR ranges with high-spatial resolution data. The LLAGNs in the sample present a large diversity in terms of SED shapes. Some of them are very well described by a self-absorbed synchrotron (e.g. NGC 1052), while some other present a thermal-like bump at ~1 micron (NGC 4594). All of them are significantly different when compared with bright Seyferts and quasars, suggesting that the inner structure of AGNs (i.e. the torus and the accretion disk) suffers intrinsic changes at low luminosities., 8 pages, 5 figures. The Astrophysical Journal 744.2 (2012): 118 reproduced by permission of the AAS, EXLup is the prototype of the EXor class of eruptive young stars. These objects show optical outbursts which are thought to be related to runaway accretion onto the star. In a previous study we observed in situ crystal formation in the disk of EXLup during its latest outburst in 2008, making the object an ideal laboratory to investigate circumstellar crystal formation and transport. This outburst was monitored by a campaign of ground-based and Spitzer Space Telescope observations. Here we modeled the spectral energy distribution (SED) of EXLup in the outburst from optical to millimeter wavelengths with a two-dimensional radiative transfer code. Our results showed that the shape of the SED at optical wavelengths was more consistent with a single-temperature blackbody than a temperature distribution. We also found that this single-temperature component emitted 80%-100% of the total accretion luminosity. We concluded that a thermal instability, the most widely accepted model of EXor outbursts, was likely not the triggering mechanism of the 2008 outburst of EXLup. Our mid-infrared Spitzer spectra revealed that the strength of all crystalline bands between 8 and 30μm increased right after the end of the outburst. Six months later, however, the crystallinity in the 10μm silicate feature complex decreased. Our modeling of the mid-infrared spectral evolution of EXLup showed that, although vertical mixing should be stronger during the outburst than in the quiescent phase, fast radial transport of crystals (e.g., by stellar/disk wind) was required to reproduce the observed mid-infrared spectra., The research of A.K. is supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Context: The discovery of new massive star clusters and massive stellar populations in previously known clusters in our Galaxy by means of infrared studies has changed our view of the Milky Way from an inactive to an active star-forming machine. Within this scenario, we present a near-infrared spectrophotometric study of the stellar content of the compact H II region Sh2-152. Aims: We aim to determine the distance, extinction, age, and mass of Sh2-152, using for the first time near-infrared stellar classification for several sources in the region. Methods: Using our near-infrared (J, H, and Ks) photometry and the colour-magnitude diagram for the cluster field, we selected 13 bright stars, candidate members of the reddened cluster's main sequence, for H- and K- spectroscopy and spectral classification. This near-infrared information was complemented with an optical spectrum of the ionizing central star to confirm its spectral nature. Results: From the 13 spectroscopically observed stars, 5 were classified as B-type, 3 as G-type, 2 were young stellar objects (YSOs), and 3 remained unclassified (because of the poor data quality). The cluster's extinction varies from A_{Ks}=0.5 to 2.6 magnitudes (A_V=4.5 to 24 magnitudes) and the distance is estimated to be 3.21\pm0.21 kpc. The age of the cluster is younger than 9.4 Myr and the lower limit to the total mass of the cluster is (2.45\pm0.79)\cdot10^3 M_{Sun}. We compare the number of ionizing photons emitted from the OB-type stars with the Lyman continuum photons derived from the radio observations and conclude that both quantities are consistent for the central region of Sh2-152. The characterisation of the stellar population toward young high-mass star-forming regions allows to constrain fundamental cluster properties like distance and age. These are essential when using high-mass clusters as probes to conduct Galactic studies. NGC 7538 is a star-forming region with an embedded stellar population only unearthed in the near-infrared. We present the first near-infrared spectro-photometric study of the candidate high-mass stellar content in NGC 7538. We obtained H and K spectra of 21 sources with both the multi-object and long-slit modes of LIRIS at the WHT, and complement these data with sub-arcsecond JHKs photometry of the region using the imaging mode of the same instrument. We find a wide variety of objects within the studied stellar population of NGC 7538. Our results discriminate between a stellar population associated to the HII region, but not contained within its extent, and several pockets of more recent star formation. We report the detection of CO bandhead emission toward several sources as well as other features indicative of a young stellar nature. We infer a spectro-photometric distance of 2.7+-0.5 kpc, an age spread in the range 0.5-2.2 Myr and a total mass ~1.7x10^3 Msun for the older population., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted by A&A

Context. In August 2010, the sudden optical brightening of two young stellar objects, located in the North America/Pelican Nebula Complex, was announced. Early observations indicated that these objects may belong to the FUor or EXor class of young eruptive stars. The eruptions of FUors and EXors are often explained by enhanced accretion of material from the circumstellar disk to the protostar. Aims. In order to determine the true nature of these two objects, we started an optical and near-infrared monitoring program, and complemented our data with archival observations and data from the literature. Methods. We plot and analyze pre-outburst and outburst spectral energy distributions (SEDs), multi-filter light curves, and color-color diagrams. Results. HBC 722 brightened monotonically in about two months, and the SED obtained during maximum brightness indicates the appearance of a hot, single-temperature blackbody. The current fading rate implies that the star will return to quiescence in about a year, questioning its classification as a bone fide FUor. The outburst of VSX J205126.1+440523 happened more gradually, but reached an unprecedentedly high amplitude. At 2.5 months after the peak, its light curves show a deep minimum, when the object was close to its pre-outburst optical brightness. Further monitoring indicates that it is still far from being quiescent. Conclusions. The shape of the light curves, the bolometric luminosities and accretion rates suggest that these objects do not fit into the classic FUor group. Although HBC 722 exhibit all spectral characteristics of a bona fide FUor, its luminosity and accretion rate is too low, and its timescale is too fast compared to classical FUors. We present the first sub-arcsecond resolution two-dimensional stellar kinematics and X-ray observations of the prototypical starburst galaxy NGC253 which define the position and nature of the galactic nucleus. We get an estimate of the stellar kinematic center location corresponding to an area of r~1.2" centered 0.7" southwest from the radio core (TH2). Newly processed Chandra data reveal a central hard X-ray source (X-1) lying 0.4" southwest from the kinematic center. Very accurate alignment between radio, infrared and X-ray sources shows that TH2, the IR photometric center and X-1 are not associated with each other. As the kinematic center is consistent with TH2 and X-1, we consider the two as possible galactic nucleus candidates. Although TH2 is the strongest radio source in the nuclear region, it does not have any infrared, optical or X-ray counterparts. If the kinematic center is associated with this source, by analogy we suggest that the nucleus of NGC253 resembles our Galactic Center SgrA*. On the other hand, X-1 is a heavily absorbed object only detected at energies >2 keV. If X-1 is instead associated with the kinematic center, the nucleus of NGC253 is compatible with an obscured low luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) or a spatially resolved super star cluster (SSC) brightening up in X-rays most probably due to young supernovae or supernova remnants. If no SSC is associated with the kinematic center, we conclude that NGC253 is a galaxy in which a strong starburst and a weak AGN (either TH2 or X-1) coexist. Results from few other high resolution studies of nearby starburst galaxies indicate that the AGN in these systems, if present, is always in the low luminosity regime. In this letter we present clear evidence that Mrk 573 is an obscured Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) and not an archetypal Seyfert 2, as it has been classified until now. Only three galaxies have been proposed as members of this class, prior to this work. Here we report near-infrared spectroscopic data taken with LIRIS on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). Our high quality near-infrared nuclear spectrum in the 0.88-1.35 micron wavelength range shows the permitted O I 1.128,1.317 micron narrow lines, the Fe II 9200-\AA lines and the Fe II 1-micron lines, together with a relatively broad component (~1700 km/s) of Paschen Beta. Very Large Telescope adaptive optics images of NGC 253 with resolutions down to 200 mas resolve the central 300 pc of this galaxy in ~ 37 infrared (IR) bright knots, a factor of 3 larger than previously reported, and extended diffuse emission. The angular resolution, comparable to that of available Very Large Array 2 cm maps, permits us a very accurate IR-radio registration. Eight radio sources are found to have an IR counterpart. The knots have H\alpha equivalent width of about 80 angstroms, sizes of ~ 3 pc, magnitudes in L-band of about 12 mag and relatively high extinction, Av ~ 7 mag. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) look very similar, characterized by a maximum at 20 micron and a gentle bump in the 1 - 2 micron range. These features can be well reproduced by considering an important contribution of very young stellar objects to the IR, efficiently heating their dust envelope. The evidence indicates that these are young massive clusters bursting from their dust cocoons. A median SED of the knots is provided, which may represent one of the most genuine templates of an extragalactic circumnuclear star-forming region. The lack of any optical or IR counterpart for the previously identified radio core calls into question its supposed active nucleus nature. Since the discovery of the first short-hard gamma-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor >10^2). A photometric redshift for this event places the progenitor at a most probable redshift of z = 4.6, with a less probable scenario of z = 1.7. In either case, GRB 060121 could be the farthermost short-duration GRB detected to date and implies an isotropic-equivalent energy release in gamma-rays comparable to that seen in long-duration bursts. We discuss the implications of the released energy on the nature of the progenitor. These results suggest that GRB 060121 may belong to a family of energetic short-duration events, lying at z > 1 and whose optical afterglows would outshine their host galaxies, unlike the first short-duration GRBs observed in 2005. We report the results of a deep photometric search for planets and brown dwarfs in the nearby young OB Upper Scorpius association. We obtained optical (I) and near-infrared (JKs) images around nine very low-mass stars and brown dwarf member candidates of the association, covering a total area of 113 arcmin^2. Using a point spread function subtraction technique, we have searched for planetary-mass companions (0.002 Msol < M < 0.013 Msol) at separations as close as 3 arcsec from the targets. We have not found any brown dwarfs more massive than 0.030 Msol at projected distances larger than 70AU, or planets more massive than 0.007 Msol at projected distances larger than 600AU. We set an upper limit of 20% (confidence level 68.3%) to the fraction of very low-mass stars and massive brown dwarfs with planetary mass companions (M > 0.007 Msol) at physical distances larger than 600AU. From the I, I-J colour-magnitude diagrams and follow-up Ks-band photometry, we identify four very red objects (I-J > 2.5) in the area of the survey. According to their positions in the diagram, below the expected theoretical sequence of the cluster, three are probable late M-dwarfs in the field. The faintest and reddest object (J-Ks = 2.39 +/- 0.06) may be either a field intermediate L-dwarf with anomalously red J-Ks colour at a distance of approx. 135pc, an extremely red distant galaxy, or a reddened planetary-mass object in the Upper Scorpius association., 6 pages, 3 figures.
