Search

Shocks are abundant in star-forming regions, and are often related with star formation. In our previous observations toward 100 starless clump candidates (SCCs) in the Galaxy, a sample of 34 SCCs associated with shocks is identified. In this work, we perform mapping observations of the SiO 2-1, 3-2, HC$_3$N 10-9, HCO$^+$ 1-0, H$^{13}$CO$^+$ 1-0, and H41$\alpha$ lines toward 9 out of the detected sources by using IRAM 30-m radio telescope to study the origins of the shocks in the SCCs. We find shocks in three sources (BGPS 3110, 3114, and 3118) are produced by collisions between the expanding ionized gas and ambient molecular gas, instead of by the star formation activity inside SCCs. On the other hand, shocks in the other six sources are related to star formation activity of SCCs. The signatures of protostellar outflows are clearly shown in the molecular lines toward BGPS 4029, 4472, 5064. Comparing our results with the previous ALMA observations performed in the same region, the shocks in BGPS 3686 and 5114 are also likely to be due to protostellar activity. Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$\gamma$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $\sim 0.1$ pc down to $\sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. Ions (e.g., H$_3^+$, H$_2$O$^+$) have been used extensively to quantify the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR) in diffuse sightlines. However, measurements of CRIR in low-to-intermediate density gas environments are rare, especially when background stars are absent. In this work, we combine molecular line observations of CO, OH, CH, and HCO$^+$ in the star-forming cloud IC~348, and chemical models to constrain the value of CRIR and study the response of the chemical abundances distribution. The cloud boundary is found to have an $A_{\rm V}$ of approximately 4 mag. From the interior to the exterior of the cloud, the observed $^{13}$CO line intensities drop by an order of magnitude. The calculated average abundance of $^{12}$CO (assuming $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = 65) is (1.2$\pm$0.9) $\times$10$^{-4}$, which increases by a factor of 6 from the interior to the outside regions. The average abundance of CH (3.3$\pm$0.7 $\times$ 10$^{-8}$) is in good agreement with previous findings in diffuse and translucent clouds ($A_{\rm V}$ $, Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. In order to search for shocks in the very early stage of star formation, we performed single-point surveys of SiO J=1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 lines and the H$_2$CO $2_{12}-1_{11}$ line toward a sample of 100 high-mass starless clump candidates (SCCs) by using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) 21-m radio telescopes. The detection rates of the SiO J=1-0, 2-1, 3-2 lines and the H$_2$CO line are $31.0\%$, $31.0\%$, $19.5\%$ and $93.0\%$, respectively. Shocks seem to be common in this stage of massive star formation. The widths of the observed SiO lines (full width at zero power (FWZP)) range from 3.4 to 55.1 km s$^{-1}$. A significant fraction ($\sim29\%$) of the detected SiO spectra have broad line widths (FWZP $>20~km~s^{-1}$), which are very likely associated with fast shocks driven by protostellar outflows. This result suggests that about one third of the SiO-detected SCCs are not really starless but protostellar. We demonstrate a novel approach to the generation of femtosecond electron bunch trains via laser-driven wakefield acceleration. We use two independent high-intensity laser pulses, a drive, and injector, each creating their own plasma wakes. The interaction of the laser pulses and their wakes results in a periodic injection of free electrons in the drive plasma wake via several mechanisms, including ponderomotive drift, wake-wake interference, and pre-acceleration of electrons directly by strong laser fields. Electron trains were generated with up to 4 quasi-monoenergetic bunches, each separated in time by a plasma period. We performed a survey in the SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line toward a sample of 199 Galactic massive star-forming regions at different evolutionary stages with the SMT 10 m and CSO 10.4 m telescopes. The sample consists of 44 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), 86 protostellar candidates, and 69 young \HII\ regions. We detected SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line emission in 102 sources, with a detection rate of 57\%, 37\%, and 65\% for IRDCs, protostellar candidates, and young \HII\ regions, respectively. We find both broad line with Full Widths at Zero Power (FWZP) $>$ 20 \kms and narrow line emissons of SiO in objects at various evolutionary stages, likely associated with high-velocity shocks and low-velocity shocks, respectively. The SiO luminosities do not show apparent differences among various evolutionary stages in our sample. We find no correlation between the SiO abundance and the luminosity-to-mass ratio, indicating that the SiO abundance does not vary significantly in regions at different evolutionary stages of star formation., 25 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We detected carbon-chain molecules (CCMs) HC2n+1N (n=1-3) and C3S in Ku band as well as {high-energy excitation lines including C4H N=9-8, J=17/2-15/2, 19/2-17/2, and CH3CCH J=5-4, K=2 in the 3 mm band toward a starless core called the eastern molecular core (EMC) of L1489 IRS. Maps of all the observed lines were also obtained. Comparisons with a number of early starless cores and WCCC source L1527 show that the column densities of C4H and CH3CCH are close to those of L1527, and the CH3CCH column densities of the EMC and L1527 are slightly higher than those of TMC-1. The EMC and L1527 have similar C3S column densities, but they are much lower than those of all the starless cores, with only 6.5% and 10% of the TMC-1 value, respectively. The emissions of the N-bearing species of the EMC and L1527 are at the medium level of the starless cores. These comparisons show that the CCM emissions in the EMC are similar to those of L1527, though L1527 contains a protostar. Although dark and quiescent, the EMC is warmer and at a later evolutionary stage than classical carbon-chain--producing regions in the cold, dark, quiescent early phase. The PACS, SPIRE, and SCUBA maps evidently show that the L1489 IRS seems to be the heating source of the EMC. Although it is located at the margins of the EMC, its bolometric luminosity and bolometric temperature are relatively high. Above all, the EMC is a rather particular carbon-chain-producing region and is quite significant for CCM science., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We performed a systematic 6.7 GHz Class \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} methanol maser survey using the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope toward targets selected from the all-sky \emph{Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)} point catalog. In this paper, we report the results from the survey of those at high Galactic latitudes, i.e. $|b|>$ 2$^\circ$. Of 1473 selected \emph{WISE} point sources at high latitude, 17 point positions that were actually associated with 12 sources were detected with maser emission, reflecting the rarity (1$-$2\%) of methanol masers in the region away from the Galactic plane. Out of the 12 sources, 3 are detected for the first time. The spectral energy distribution (SED) at infrared bands shows that these new detected masers occur in the massive star forming regions. Compared to previous detections, the methanol maser changes significantly in both spectral profiles and flux densities. The infrared \emph{WISE} images show that almost all of these masers are located in the positions of the bright \emph{WISE} point sources. Compared with the methanol masers at the Galactic plane, these high-latitude methanol masers provide good tracers for investigating the physics and kinematics around massive young stellar objects, because they are believed to be less affected by the surrounding cluster environment., 27pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Using the new equipment of the Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope, we have searched for carbon-chain molecules (CCMs) towards five outflow sources and six Lupus I starless dust cores, including one region known to be characterized by warm carbon-chain chemistry (WCCC), Lupus I-1 (IRAS 15398-3359), and one TMC-1 like cloud, Lupus I-6 (Lupus-1A). Lines of HC3N J=2-1, HC5N J=6-5, HC7N J=14-13, 15-14, 16-15 and C3S J=3-2 were detected in all the targets except in the outflow source L1660 and the starless dust core Lupus I-3/4. The column densities of nitrogen-bearing species range from 10$^{12}$ to 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and those of C$_3$S are about 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. Two outflow sources, I20582+7724 and L1221, could be identified as new carbon-chain--producing regions. Four of the Lupus I dust cores are newly identified as early quiescent and dark carbon-chain--producing regions similar to Lup I-6, which together with the WCCC source, Lup I-1, indicate that carbon-chain-producing regions are popular in Lupus I which can be regard as a Taurus like molecular cloud complex in our Galaxy. The column densities of C3S are larger than those of HC7N in the three outflow sources I20582, L1221 and L1251A. Shocked carbon-chain chemistry (SCCC) is proposed to explain the abnormal high abundances of C3S compared with those of nitrogen-bearing CCMs. Gas-grain chemical models support the idea that shocks can fuel the environment of those sources with enough $S^+$ thus driving the generation of S-bearing CCMs., Comment: 7 figures, 8 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We present results of millimeter line observations toward four local gas-rich galaxies (NGC 3079, NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and VII Zw 31) with the IRAM 30 meter millimeter telescope. More than 33 lines in these four sources were detected, including normal dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO$^+$ 1-0, and C$_2$H 1-0, etc) and their isotopic species. H$^{13}$CN (1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) are detected for the first time in NGC 4258. Optical depths of HCN 1-0 and HCO$^{+}$ 1-0 were estimated with detected isotopic lines in NGC 4258, which were 4.1 and 2.6, respectively. HC$_3$N $J=29-28$, which requires high volume density and high temperature to excite, was detected in NGC 6240. High ratios of HCO$^+$/HCN in NGC 4258 and NGC 6240 imply that this ratio might not be a perfect diagnostic tool between AGN and starburst environments, due to contamination/combination of both processes. The low HC$_3$N/HCN line ratios with less than 0.15 in NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and the non-detection of HC$_3$N line in NGC 3079 and VII Zw 31 indicates that these four galaxies are HC$_3$N-poor galaxies. Aims. We aim to systematically study the properties of the different transitions of the dense molecular gas tracer HC3N in galaxies. Methods. We have conducted single-dish observations of HC3N emission lines towards a sample of nearby gas-rich galaxies. HC3N(J=2-1) was observed in 20 galaxies with Effelsberg 100-m telescope. HC3N(J=24-23) was observed in nine galaxies with the 10-m Submillimeter Telescope (SMT). Results. HC3 N 2-1 is detected in three galaxies: IC 342, M 66 and NGC 660 (> 3 {\sigma}). HC3 N 24-23 is detected in three galaxies: IC 342, NGC 1068 and IC 694. This is the first measurements of HC3N 2-1 in a relatively large sample of external galaxies, although the detection rate is low. For the HC3 N 2-1 non-detections, upper limits (2 {\sigma}) are derived for each galaxy, and stacking the non-detections is attempted to recover the weak signal of HC3N. But the stacked spectrum does not show any significant signs of HC3N 2-1 emission. The results are also compared with other transitions of HC3N observed in galaxies. Conclusions. The low detection rate of both transitions suggests low abundance of HC3N in galaxies, which is consistent with other observational studies. The comparison between HC3N and HCN or HCO+shows a large diversity in the ratios between HC3N and HCN or HCO+. A spectral line survey of IRC +10216 between 13.3 and 18.5 GHz is carried out using the Shanghai Tian Ma 65 m Radio Telescope (TMRT-65m) with a sensitivity of < 7 mK. Thirty-five spectral lines of 12 different molecules and radicals are detected in total. Except for SiS, the detected molecules are all carbon-chain molecules, including HC3N, HC5N, HC7N, HC9N, C6H, C6H-, C8H, SiC2, SiC4, c-C3H2 and l-C5H. The presence of rich carbon-bearing molecules is consistent with the identity of IRC +10216 as a carbon-rich AGB star. We have compiled a sample of 26 metal-poor galaxies with 12 + log(O/H) < 8.1 with both infrared continuum and 1.4 GHz radio continuum data. By comparing to galaxies at higher metallicity, we have investigated the dependence on the metallicity of the IR-radio relationship at 24 um, 70 um, 100 um and 160 um bands as well as the integrated FIR luminosity. It is found that metal-poor galaxies have on average lower qIR than metal-rich ones with larger offsets at longer IR wavelengths, from -0.06 dex in q24um to -0.6 dex in q160um. The qIR of all galaxies as a whole at 160 um show positive trends with the metallicity and IR-to-FUV ratio, and negative trends with the IR color, while those at lower IR wavelengths show weaker correlations. We proposed a mechanism that invokes combined effects of low obscured-SFR/total-SFR fraction and warm dust temperature at low metallicity to interpret the above behavior of qIR, with the former reducing the IR radiation and the latter further reducing the IR emission at longer IR wavelength. Other mechanisms that are related to the radio emission including the enhanced magnetic field strength and increased thermal radio contribution are unable to reconcile the IR-wavelength-dependent differences of qIR between metal-poor and metal- rich galaxies. In contrast to qIR, the mean total-SFR/radio ratio of metal-poor galaxies is the same as the metal-rich one, indicating the 1.4 GHz radio emission is still an effective tracer of SFRs at low metallicity., 25 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. A systematic study is performed on radio properties of H$_{2}$O megamaser host Seyfert 2 galaxies, through multi-band radio continuum observations (at 11cm, 6.0 cm, 3.6 cm, 2.0 cm and 1.3 cm) with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope within a total time duration of four days. For comparison, a control Seyfert 2 galaxy sample without detected maser emission was also observed. Spectral indices were determined for those sources for which measurements exist at two adjacent bands assuming a power-law dependence S$_\nu \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$, where S is the flux density and $\nu$ is the frequency. Comparisons of the radio continuum properties between megamaser and non-masing Seyfert 2s show no difference in spectral indices. However, a difference in radio luminosity is statistically significant, i.e. the maser galaxies tend to have higher radio luminosities by a factor of 2 to 3 than the non-masing ones, commonly reaching values above a critical threshold of 10$^{29}$ ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$. This result confirms an earlier conclusion by Zhang et al. (2012), but is based on superior data with respect to the time interval within which the data were obtained, with respect to the observational facility (only one telescope used), the number of frequency bands.

C$_2$H is a representative hydrocarbon that is abundant and ubiquitous in the interstellar medium (ISM). To study its chemical properties, we present Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the C$_2$H $N=3-2$ and HC$_3$N $J=30-29$ transitions and the 1.1 mm continuum emission toward four OB cluster-forming regions, AFGL 490, ON 1, W33 Main, and G10.6-0.4, which cover a bolometric luminosity range of $\sim$10$^3$--10$^6$ $L_{\odot}$. We found that on large scales, the C$_2$H emission traces the dense molecular envelope. However, for all observed sources, the peaks of C$_2$H emission are offset by several times times 10$^4$ AU from the peaks of 1.1 mm continuum emission, where the most luminous stars are located. By comparing the distribution and profiles of C$_2$H hyperfine lines and the 1.1 mm continuum emission, we find that the C$_2$H column density (and abundance) around the 1.1 mm continuum peaks is lower than those in the ambient gas envelope. Chemical models suggest that C$_2$H might be transformed to other species owing to increased temperature and density; thus, its reduced abundance could be the signpost of the heated molecular gas in the $\sim$10$^4$ AU vicinity around the embedded high-mass stars. Our results support such theoretical prediction for centrally embedded $\sim10^3$--$10^6L_{\odot}$ OB star-forming cores, while future higher-resolution observations are required to examine the C$_2$H transformation around the localized sites of high-mass star formation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We studied sulfur chemistry of massive star-forming regions through single-dish submillimeter spectroscopy. OCS, O13CS, 13CS, H2S and SO transitions were observed toward a sample of massive star-forming regions with embedded UCH II or CH II regions. These sources could be divided into H II-hot core and H II-only sources based on their CH3CN emission. Our results show that the OCS line of thirteen sources is optically thick, with optical depth ranging from 5 to 16. Column densities of these molecules were computed under LTE conditions. CS column densities were also derived using its optically thin isotopologue 13CS. H2S is likely to be the most abundant gas-phase sulfuretted molecules in hot assive cores. Both the column density and abundance of sulfur-bearing molecules decrease significantly from H II-hot core to H II-only sources. Ages derived from hot core models appear to be consistent with star-formation theories, suggesting that abundance ratios of [CS]/[SO], [SO]/[OCS] and [OCS]/[CS] could be used as chemical clocks in massive star-forming regions., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ

We have developed a full numerical method to study the gas dynamics of cometary ultra-compact (UC) H II regions, and associated photodissociation regions (PDRs). The bow-shock and champagne-flow models with a $40.9/21.9 M_\odot$ star are simulated. In the bow-shock models, the massive star is assumed to move through dense ($n=8000~cm^{-3}$) molecular material with a stellar velocity of $15~km~s^{-1}$. In the champagne-flow models, an exponential distribution of density with a scale height of 0.2 pc is assumed. The profiles of the [Ne II] 12.81\mum and $H_2~S(2)$ lines from the ionized regions and PDRs are compared for two sets of models. In champagne-flow models, emission lines from the ionized gas clearly show the effect of acceleration along the direction toward the tail due to the density gradient. The kinematics of the molecular gas inside the dense shell is mainly due to the expansion of the H II region. However, in bow-shock models the ionized gas mainly moves in the same direction as the stellar motion. The kinematics of the molecular gas inside the dense shell simply reflects the motion of the dense shell with respect to the star. We present a deep (~5.8 days) 0.3-2 keV high-resolution spectrum of NGC1365, collected with the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton. The spectrum is dominated by strong recombination lines of He- and H-like transitions from carbon to silicon, as well as by L transitions from FeXVII. The continuum is strong, especially in the 10 to 20 Angstrom, range. Formal fits require two optically thin, collisionally ionised plasma components, with temperatures ~300 and ~640 eV. However, they leave the bulk of the forbidden components of the He-alpha OVII and NVI triplets unaccounted for. These features can be explained as being produced by photoionised gas. NGC1365 is therefore the first obscured AGN, whose high-resolution X-ray spectrum requires both collisional ionisation and photoionisation. The relative weakness of photoionisation does not stem from the intrinsic weakness of its AGN, whose X-ray luminosity is ~10^{42} erg/s. We suggest that it may instead come from the line-of-sight from the active nucleus to the NLR being blocked by optically thick matter in the broad line region, at the same time responsible for the large observed variation of the column density obscuring the X-ray active nucleus.
