We propose a novel experimental method for probing light dark matter candidates. We show that an electro-optical material's refractive index is modified in the presence of a coherently oscillating dark matter background. A high-precision resonant Michelson interferometer can be used to read out this signal. The proposed detection scheme allows for the exploration of an uncharted parameter space of dark matter candidates over a wide range of masses -- including masses exceeding a few tens of microelectronvolts, which is a challenging parameter space for microwave cavity haloscopes., Comment: 6+4 pages, 2 figures

Evidence for a low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background has recently been reported based on analyses of pulsar timing array data. The most likely source of such a background is a population of supermassive black hole binaries, the loudest of which may be individually detected in these datasets. Here we present the search for individual supermassive black hole binaries in the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. We introduce several new techniques, which enhance the efficiency and modeling accuracy of the analysis. The search uncovered weak evidence for two candidate signals, one with a gravitational-wave frequency of $\sim$4 nHz, and another at $\sim$170 nHz. The significance of the low-frequency candidate was greatly diminished when Hellings-Downs correlations were included in the background model. The high-frequency candidate was discounted due to the lack of a plausible host galaxy, the unlikely astrophysical prior odds of finding such a source, and since most of its support comes from a single pulsar with a commensurate binary period. Finding no compelling evidence for signals from individual binary systems, we place upper limits on the strain amplitude of gravitational waves emitted by such systems., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. In this and a companion paper, we show that quantum field theories with gauge symmetries permit a broader class of classical dynamics than typically assumed. In this article, we show that the dynamics extracted from the path integral or Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity allows for classical states that do not satisfy the full set of Einstein's equations. This amounts to loosening the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints that are imposed on the initial state. Nevertheless, the quantum theory permits gauge invariant time evolution of these states. The time evolution of these states is such that at the classical level the full set of Einstein's equations would appear to hold, with the physical effects of these states being attributable to an auxiliary, covariantly conserved energy-momentum tensor with no internal degrees of freedom. We derive the generalized Einstein equations for these states and show that a homogeneous and isotropic initial background state contributes to expansion identical to cold dark matter. The inhomogeneous components of this state could source curvature perturbations that grow linearly at linear order. This auxiliary contribution to Einstein's equations could have either sign and thus provide a trivial way to violate the null energy condition, enabling novel gravitational dynamics such as cosmic bounces and wormholes., Comment: 21 pages

This paper presents rigorous tests of pulsar timing array methods and software, examining their consistency across a wide range of injected parameters and signal strength. We discuss updates to the 15-year isotropic gravitational-wave background analyses and their corresponding code representations. Descriptions of the internal structure of the flagship algorithms \texttt{Enterprise} and \texttt{PTMCMCSampler} are given to facilitate understanding of the PTA likelihood structure, how models are built, and what methods are currently used in sampling the high-dimensional PTA parameter space. We introduce a novel version of the PTA likelihood that uses a two-step marginalization procedure that performs much faster when the white noise parameters remain fixed. We perform stringent tests of consistency and correctness of the Bayesian and frequentist analysis software. For the Bayesian analysis, we test prior recovery, injection recovery, and Bayes factors. For the frequentist analysis, we test that the cross-correlation-based optimal statistic, when modified to account for a non-negligible gravitational-wave background, accurately recovers the amplitude of the background. We also summarize recent advances and tests performed on the optimal statistic in the literature from both GWB detection and parameter estimation perspectives. Although neutron star-black hole binaries have been identified through mergers detected in gravitational waves, a pulsar-black hole binary has yet to be detected. While short-period binaries are detectable due to a clear signal in the pulsar's timing residuals, effects from a long-period binary could be masked by other timing effects, allowing them to go undetected. In particular, a long-period binary measured over a small subset of its orbital period could manifest via time derivatives of the spin-frequency incompatible with isolated pulsar properties. We assess the possibility of pulsars having unknown companions in long-period binaries and put constraints on the range of binary properties that may remain undetected in current data, but that may be detectable with further observations. We find that for 35% of canonical pulsars with published higher order derivatives, the precision of measurements is not enough to confidently reject binarity (period greater than ~2 kyr), and that a black-hole binary companion could not be ruled out for a sample of pulsars without published constraints if the period is greater than 1 kyr. While we find no convincing cases in the literature, we put more stringent limits on orbital period and longitude of periastron for the few pulsars with published higher-order frequency derivatives (n greater than 3). We discuss the detectability of candidates and find that a sample pulsar in a 100 yr orbit could be detectable within 5-10 yr., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Accepted to ApJ

We propose a novel search technique for axions with a CP-violating monopole coupling $\tilde{g}_{Q}$ to bulk SM charges $Q \in \{B,L,B-L\}$. Gradients in the static axion field configurations sourced by matter induce achromatic circular photon birefringence via the axion-photon coupling $g_{\phi \gamma}$. Circularly polarized light fed into an optical or (open) radio-frequency (RF) Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity develops a phase shift that accumulates up to the cavity finesse: the fixed axion spatial gradient prevents a cancellation known to occur for an axion dark-matter search. The relative phase shift between two FP cavities fed with opposite circular polarizations can be detected interferometrically. This time-independent signal can be modulated up to non-zero frequency by altering the cavity orientations with respect to the field gradient. Multi-wavelength co-metrology techniques can be used to address chromatic measurement systematics and noise sources. With Earth as the axion source, we project reach beyond current constraints on the product of couplings $\tilde{g}_{Q} g_{\phi \gamma}$ for axion masses $m_{\phi} \lesssim 10^{-5} \text{eV}$. If shot-noise-limited sensitivity can be achieved, an experiment using high-finesse RF FP cavities could reach a factor of $\sim 10^{6}$ into new parameter space for $\tilde{g}_Q g_{\phi \gamma}$ for masses $m_\phi \lesssim 10^{-10} \text{eV}$., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) has reported evidence for the presence of an isotropic nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) in its 15 yr dataset. However, if the GWB is produced by a population of inspiraling supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) systems, then the background is predicted to be anisotropic, depending on the distribution of these systems in the local Universe and the statistical properties of the SMBHB population. In this work, we search for anisotropy in the GWB using multiple methods and bases to describe the distribution of the GWB power on the sky. We do not find significant evidence of anisotropy, and place a Bayesian $95\%$ upper limit on the level of broadband anisotropy such that $(C_{l>0} / C_{l=0}) < 20\%$. We also derive conservative estimates on the anisotropy expected from a random distribution of SMBHB systems using astrophysical simulations conditioned on the isotropic GWB inferred in the 15-yr dataset, and show that this dataset has sufficient sensitivity to probe a large fraction of the predicted level of anisotropy. The NANOGrav 15-year data set shows evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave background (GWB). While many physical processes can source such low-frequency gravitational waves, here we analyze the signal as coming from a population of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries distributed throughout the Universe. We show that astrophysically motivated models of SMBH binary populations are able to reproduce both the amplitude and shape of the observed low-frequency gravitational-wave spectrum. While multiple model variations are able to reproduce the GWB spectrum at our current measurement precision, our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling binary evolution for producing realistic GWB spectra. Additionally, while reasonable parameters are able to reproduce the 15-year observations, the implied GWB amplitude necessitates either a large number of parameters to be at the edges of expected values, or a small number of parameters to be notably different from standard expectations. While we are not yet able to definitively establish the origin of the inferred GWB signal, the consistency of the signal with astrophysical expectations offers a tantalizing prospect for confirming that SMBH binaries are able to form, reach sub-parsec separations, and eventually coalesce. We present timing solutions for 21 pulsars discovered in 350 MHz surveys using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). All were discovered in the Green Bank North Celestial Cap pulsar survey, with the exception of PSR J0957-0619, which was found in the GBT 350 MHz Drift-scan pulsar survey. The majority of our timing observations were made with the GBT at 820 MHz. With a spin period of 37 ms and a 528-day orbit, PSR J0032+6946 joins a small group of five other mildly recycled wide binary pulsars, for which the duration of recycling through accretion is limited by the length of the companion's giant phase. PSRs J0141+6303 and J1327+3423 are new disrupted recycled pulsars. We incorporate Arecibo observations from the NANOGrav pulsar timing array into our analysis of the latter. We also observed PSR J1327+3423 with the Long Wavelength Array, and our data suggest a frequency-dependent dispersion measure. PSR J0957-0619 was discovered as a rotating radio transient, but is a nulling pulsar at 820 MHz. PSR J1239+3239 is a new millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a 4-day orbit with a low-mass companion. Four of our pulsars already have published timing solutions, which we update in this work: the recycled wide binary PSR J0214+5222, the non-eclipsing black widow PSR J0636+5128, the disrupted recycled pulsar J1434+7257, and the eclipsing binary MSP J1816+4510, which is in an 8.7 hr orbit with a redback-mass companion., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are galactic-scale gravitational wave detectors. Each individual arm, composed of a millisecond pulsar, a radio telescope, and a kiloparsecs-long path, differs in its properties but, in aggregate, can be used to extract low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signals. We present a noise and sensitivity analysis to accompany the NANOGrav 15-year data release and associated papers, along with an in-depth introduction to PTA noise models. As a first step in our analysis, we characterize each individual pulsar data set with three types of white noise parameters and two red noise parameters. These parameters, along with the timing model and, particularly, a piecewise-constant model for the time-variable dispersion measure, determine the sensitivity curve over the low-frequency GW band we are searching. We tabulate information for all of the pulsars in this data release and present some representative sensitivity curves. We then combine the individual pulsar sensitivities using a signal-to-noise-ratio statistic to calculate the global sensitivity of the PTA to a stochastic background of GWs, obtaining a minimum noise characteristic strain of $7\times 10^{-15}$ at 5 nHz. A power law-integrated analysis shows rough agreement with the amplitudes recovered in NANOGrav's 15-year GW background analysis. The 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) shows positive evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave (GW) background. In this paper, we investigate potential cosmological interpretations of this signal, specifically cosmic inflation, scalar-induced GWs, first-order phase transitions, cosmic strings, and domain walls. We find that, with the exception of stable cosmic strings of field theory origin, all these models can reproduce the observed signal. When compared to the standard interpretation in terms of inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), many cosmological models seem to provide a better fit resulting in Bayes factors in the range from 10 to 100. However, these results strongly depend on modeling assumptions about the cosmic SMBHB population and, at this stage, should not be regarded as evidence for new physics. Furthermore, we identify excluded parameter regions where the predicted GW signal from cosmological sources significantly exceeds the NANOGrav signal. These parameter constraints are independent of the origin of the NANOGrav signal and illustrate how pulsar timing data provide a new way to constrain the parameter space of these models. Finally, we search for deterministic signals produced by models of ultralight dark matter (ULDM) and dark matter substructures in the Milky Way. We find no evidence for either of these signals and thus report updated constraints on these models. Time evolution generically entangles a quantum state with environmental degrees of freedom. The resulting increase in entropy changes the properties of that quantum system leading to "aging". It is interesting to ask if this familiar property also applies to simple, single particle quantum systems such as the decay of a radioactive particle. We propose a test of such aging in an ion clock setup where we probe for temporal changes to the energies of the electronic state of an ion containing a radioactive nucleus. Such effects are absent in standard quantum mechanics and this test is thus a potent null test for violations of quantum mechanics. We consider different types of storage rings as precision probes of axion-mediated monopole-dipole forces. We show that current and planned experiments aiming to measure magnetic and electric dipole moments of protons, muons and electrons very precisely may explore new parts of the parameter space beyond existing laboratory bounds and, in some cases, beyond astrophysical constraints. Remarkably, a light axion coupled to muons may explain the FNAL/BNL $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly as an environmental effect -- the coherent axion field generated by the earth nucleons induces an extra contribution to the anomalous precession frequency of the muon explaining the discrepancy with respect to the SM prediction., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. v2: references added, version accepted in PRD

Kaplan and Rajendran have recently demonstrated that non-linear and state-dependent terms can be consistently added to quantum field theory to yield causal non-linear time evolution in quantum mechanics. Causal non-linear theories have the unavoidable feature that their quantum effects are dramatically sensitive to the full physical spread of the quantum state of the system. As a result, such theories are not well tested by conventional atomic and nuclear spectroscopy. By using a well-controlled superposition of vibrational modes of a $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion trapped in a harmonic potential, we set a stringent limit of $5.4\times 10^{-12}$ on the magnitude of the unitless scaling factor $\tilde{\epsilon}_{\gamma}$ for the predicted causal, non-linear perturbation.

The quantum description of time evolution in non-linear gravitational systems such as cosmological space-times is not well understood. We show, in the simplified setting of mini-superspace, that time evolution of this system can be obtained using a gauge fixed path integral, as long as one does not integrate over proper time. Using this gauge fixed action we can construct a Hamiltonian in the coherent - or classical - state basis. We show that by construction the coherent states satisfy the classical dynamical equations of General Relativity. They do not satisfy the Hamiltonian constraint. A consequence of this is that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation should not be satisfied in quantum gravity. Classical states have a natural non-trivial time evolution since they are not eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. We generalize the idea of the quantized Hall current to count gapless edge states in topological materials, applying equally well to theories in different dimensions, with or without continuous symmetries in the bulk or chiral anomalies on the boundaries. This current is related to the index of the Euclidean fermion operator and can be calculated via one-loop Feynman diagrams. Quantization of the current is shown to be governed by topology in phase space, and the procedure can be applied to topological classes governed by either ${\mathbb Z}$ or ${\mathbb Z}_2$ invariants. We analyze several explicit examples of free fermions in relativistic field theories. We present a search for extragalactic fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) during Phase I of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). In a previous paper, the authors with Ann Nelson proposed that the UV and IR applicability of effective quantum field theories should be constrained by requiring that strong gravitational effects are nowhere encountered in a theory's domain of validity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4971 (1999)]. The constraint was proposed to delineate the boundary beyond which conventional quantum field theory, viewed as an effective theory excluding quantum gravitational effects, might be expected to break down. In this Letter we revisit this idea and show that quantum gravitational effects could lead to a deviation of size $(\alpha/2\pi)\sqrt{m_e/M_p}$ from the Standard Model calculation for the electron magnetic moment. This is the same size as QED and hadronic uncertainties in the theory of $a_e$, and a little more than one order of magnitude smaller than both the dominant uncertainty in its Standard Model value arising from the accuracy with which $\alpha$ is measured, as well as the experimental uncertainty in measurement of $a_e$., Comment: 3 pages

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) collects images of the sky at radio wavelengths with an unprecedented field of view, combined with a high angular resolution and sub-millijansky sensitivities. The large quantity of data produced is used by the ASKAP Variables and Slow Transients (VAST) survey science project to study the dynamic radio sky. Efficient pipelines are vital in such research, where searches often form a `needle in a haystack' type of problem to solve. However, the existing pipelines developed among the radio-transient community are not suitable for the scale of ASKAP datasets. In this paper we provide a technical overview of the new "VAST Pipeline": a modern and scalable Python-based data pipeline for transient searches, using up-to-date dependencies and methods. The pipeline allows source association to be performed at scale using the Pandas DataFrame interface and the well-known Astropy crossmatch functions. The Dask Python framework is used to parallelise operations as well as scale them both vertically and horizontally, by means of a cluster of workers. When galaxies merge, the supermassive black holes in their centers may form binaries and, during the process of merger, emit low-frequency gravitational radiation in the process. In this paper we consider the galaxy 3C66B, which was used as the target of the first multi-messenger search for gravitational waves. Due to the observed periodicities present in the photometric and astrometric data of the source of the source, it has been theorized to contain a supermassive black hole binary. Its apparent 1.05-year orbital period would place the gravitational wave emission directly in the pulsar timing band. Since the first pulsar timing array study of 3C66B, revised models of the source have been published, and timing array sensitivities and techniques have improved dramatically. With these advances, we further constrain the chirp mass of the potential supermassive black hole binary in 3C66B to less than $(1.65\pm0.02) \times 10^9~{M_\odot}$ using data from the NANOGrav 11-year data set. This upper limit provides a factor of 1.6 improvement over previous limits, and a factor of 4.3 over the first search done. Nevertheless, the most recent orbital model for the source is still consistent with our limit from pulsar timing array data. In addition, we are able to quantify the improvement made by the inclusion of source properties gleaned from electromagnetic data to `blind' pulsar timing array searches. With these methods, it is apparent that it is not necessary to obtain exact a priori knowledge of the period of a binary to gain meaningful astrophysical inferences., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. This note provides additional interpretation for the counterfactual outcome distribution and corresponding unconditional quantile "effects" defined and estimated by Firpo, Fortin, and Lemieux (2009) and Chernozhukov, Fern\'andez-Val, and Melly (2013). With conditional independence of the policy variable of interest, these methods estimate the policy effect for certain types of policies, but not others. We demonstrate that rotational superradiance can be efficient in millisecond pulsars. Measurements from the two fastest known pulsars PSR J1748-2446ad and PSR B1937+21 can place bounds on bosons with masses below 10^{-11} eV. The bounds are maximally good at masses corresponding to the rotation rate of the star, where scalar interactions that mediate forces ~ 10^6 times weaker than gravity are ruled out, exceeding existing fifth force constraints by 3 orders of magnitude. For certain neutron star equations of state, these measurements would also constrain the QCD axion with masses between 5 10^{-13} and 3 10^{-12} eV. Despite the ability of most neutron star equations of state to support frequencies as high as ~ 1500 Hz, the observed absence of pulsars above ~ 700 Hz could be due to the existence of a new particle of mass ~ 10^{-11} eV with a Yukawa coupling to nucleons., Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures

The identification of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave event, GW170817, and discovery of neutrinos and gamma-rays from TXS 0506+056 heralded the new era of multi-messenger astrophysics. As the number of multi-messenger events rapidly grow over the next decade, the cyberinfrastructure requirements to handle the increase in data rates, data volume, need for event follow up, and analysis across the different messengers will also explosively grow. The cyberinfrastructure requirements to enhance multi-messenger astrophysics will both be a major challenge and opportunity for astronomers, physicists, computer scientists and cyberinfrastructure specialists. Ultra-light hidden-photon dark matter produces an oscillating electric field in the early Universe plasma, which in turn induces an electric current in its ionized component whose dissipation results in heat transfer from the dark matter to the plasma. This will affect the global 21cm signal from the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn. In this work we focus on the latter, in light of the reported detection by the EDGES collaboration of an absorption signal at frequencies corresponding to redshift z~17. By measuring the 21cm global signal, a limit can be placed on the amount of gas heating, and thus the kinetic mixing strength $\varepsilon$ between the hidden and ordinary photons can be constrained. Our inferred 21cm bounds on $\varepsilon$ in the mass range $10^{-23}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_\chi\lesssim10^{-13}\,{\rm eV}$ are the strongest to date., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Einstein's theory of gravity, general relativity, has passed stringent tests in laboratories, elsewhere in the Solar Sytem, and in pulsar binaries. Nevertheless it is known to be incompatible with quantum mechanics and must differ from the true behaviour of matter in strong fields and at small spatial scales. A key aspect of general relativity to test is the strong equivalence principle (SEP), which states that all freely falling objects, regardless of how strong their gravity, experience the same acceleration in the same gravitational field. Essentially all alternatives to general relativity violate this principle at some level. Previous direct tests of the SEP are limited by the weak gravity of the bodies in the Earth-Moon-Sun system or by the weak gravitational pull of the Galaxy on pulsar-white dwarf binaries. PSR~J0337+1715 is a hierarchical stellar triple system, where the inner binary consists of a millisecond radio pulsar in a $1.6$-day orbit with a white dwarf. This inner binary is in a $327$-day orbit with another white dwarf. In this system, the pulsar and the inner companion fall toward the outer companion with an acceleration about $10^8$ times greater than that produced by falling in the Galactic potential, and the pulsar's gravitational binding energy is roughly $10\%$ of its mass. Here we report that in spite of the pulsar's strong gravity, the accelerations experienced by it and the inner white dwarf differ by a fraction of no more than $2.6\times 10^{-6}$ ($95\%$ confidence level). We can roughly compare this to other SEP tests by using the strong-field Nordtvedt parameter $\hat\eta_N$. Our limit on $\hat\eta_N$ is a factor of ten smaller than that obtained from (weak-field) Solar-System SEP tests and a factor of almost a thousand smaller than that obtained from other strong-field SEP tests., Comment: This is the pre-refereeing version as required by Nature's rules

In 2012, five high school students involved in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory discovered the millisecond pulsar PSR J1400$-$1431 and initial timing parameters were published in Rosen et al. (2013) a year later. Since then, we have obtained a phase-connected timing solution spanning five years, resolving a significant position discrepancy and measuring $\dot{P}$, proper motion, parallax, and a monotonic slope in dispersion measure over time. Due to PSR J1400$-$1431's proximity and significant proper motion, we use the Shklovskii effect and other priors to determine a 95% confidence interval for PSR J1400$-$1431's distance, $d=270^{+130}_{-80}$ pc. With an improved timing position, we present the first detection of the pulsar's low-mass white dwarf (WD) companion using the Goodman Spectrograph on the 4.1-m SOAR telescope. Deeper imaging suggests that it is a cool DA-type WD with $T_{\rm eff}=3000\pm100$ K and $R/R_\odot=(2.19\pm0.03)\times10^{-2}\,(d/270\,{\rm pc})$. We show a convincing association between PSR J1400$-$1431 and a $��$-ray point source, 3FGL J1400.5$-$1437, but only weak (3.3-$��$) evidence of pulsations after folding $��$-ray photons using our radio timing model. We detect an X-ray counterpart with XMM-Newton but the measured X-ray luminosity ($1\times10^{29}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) makes PSR J1400$-$1431 the least X-ray luminous rotation-powered millisecond pulsar (MSP) detected to date. Together, our findings present a consistent picture of a nearby ($d\approx230$ pc) MSP in a 9.5-day orbit around a cool, $\sim$0.3 M$_\odot$ WD companion, with orbital inclination, $i\gtrsim60^\circ$., 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

I consider a reformulation of QCD which incorporates additional bosonic fields, and analyze it in the large-N limit. This construction makes a more direct connection with the nonrelativistic quark and the chiral quark models, as well as the bag model for baryons. This extension of QCD is neither a model nor an effective low energy theory, but is exactly equivalent to QCD., 4 pages, 4 figures

A recently developed lattice method for large numbers of strongly interacting nonrelativistic fermions exhibits a heavy tail in the distributions of correlators for large Euclidean time {\tau} and large number of fermions N, which only allows the measurement of ground state energies for a limited number of fermions using standard techniques. In such cases, it is suggested that measuring the log of the correlator is more efficient, and a cumulant expansion of this quantity can be exactly related to the correlation function. The cumulant expansion technique allows us to determine the ground state energies of up to 66 unpolarized unitary fermions on lattices as large as 72$\times$14^3, and up to 70 unpolarized unitary fermions trapped in a harmonic potential on lattices as large as 72$\times$64^3. In supersymmetric models with R parity violation, constraints on superpartner masses are significantly weaker than in models which conserve R parity. We find in regions of parameter space where a neutral gaugino or third generation scalar is decoupled from the Z and/or traditional gaugino mass relationships do not hold allow some particles to be light enough to allow them to be the decay products of the Higgs. For example, surprisingly a stau could be lighter than 30 GeV if it decays hadronically. We estimate the Higgs bounds when one of these decays dominates and find allowed Higgs masses well below the current LEP bound on the standard model Higgs. Both electroweak precision measurements and simple supersymmetric extensions of the standard model prefer a mass of the Higgs boson less than the experimental lower limit of 114 GeV. We show that supersymmetric models with R parity violation and baryon number violation have a significant range of parameter space in which the Higgs dominantly decays to six jets. These decays are much more weakly constrained by current LEP analyses and would allow for a Higgs mass near that of the $Z$. In general, lighter scalar quark and other superpartner masses are allowed and the fine-tuning typically required to generate the measured scale of electroweak symmetry breaking is ameliorated. The Higgs would potentially be discovered at hadron colliders via the appearance of new displaced vertices. We show that axion phenomenology may be significantly different than conventionally assumed in theories which exhibit late phase transitions (below the QCD scale). In such theories one can find multiple pseudoscalars with axion-like couplings to matter, including a string scale axion, whose decay constant far exceeds the conventional cosmological bound. We formulate a Euclidean spacetime lattice whose continuum limit is (2,2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions, a theory which possesses four supercharges and an anomalous global chiral symmetry. The lattice action respects one exact supersymmetry, which allows the target theory to emerge in the continuum limit without fine-tuning. Our method exploits an orbifold construction described previously for spatial lattices in Minkowski space, and can be generalized to more complicated theories with additional supersymmetry and more spacetime dimensions.

We construct a lattice theory describing a system of interacting nonrelativistic spin s=1/2 fermions at nonzero chemical potential. The theory is applicable whenever the interparticle separation is large compared to the range of the two-body potential, and does not suffer from a sign problem. Weak interactions are expected to induce a parity violating pion-nucleon coupling, h_{��NN}^{(1)}. This coupling should be measurable in a proposed experiment to study the parity violating asymmetry A_��in the process \vec n + p \to d+��. We compute the leading dependence of A_��on the coupling h_{��NN}^{(1)} using recently developed effective field theory techniques and find an asymmetry of A_��= +0.17 h_{��NN}^{(1)} at leading order. Good statistics for measuring large-scale structure in the Universe must be able to distinguish between different models of structure formation.
