Abstract

We report on direct numerical simulation of quasi-one-dimensional bidirectional capillary-wave turbulence. Although nontrivial three-wave and four-wave resonant interactions are absent in this peculiar geometry, we show that an energy transfer between scales still occurs concentrated around the linear dispersion relation that is broadened by nonlinearity. The wave spectrum displays a clear wave number power-law scaling that is found to be in good agreement with the dimensionally prediction for capillary-wave turbulence involving four-wave interactions. The carried out high-order correlation analysis (bicoherence and tricoherence) confirms quantitatively the dominant role of four-wave quasi-resonant interactions. The Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum constant is also estimated numerically. We interpret our results as the first numerical observation of anisotropic capillary-wave turbulence in which four-wave interactions play a dominant role, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

International audience; We study the band-edge exciton fine structure and in particular its bright-dark splitting in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals by four different optical methods based on fluorescence line narrowing and time-resolved measurements at various temperatures down to 2 K. We demonstrate that all these methods provide consistent splitting values and discuss their advances and limitations. Colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets with thicknesses of 3, 4 and 5 monolayers are chosen for experimental demonstrations. The bright-dark splitting of excitons varies from 3.2 to 6.0 meV and is inversely proportional to the nanoplatelet thickness. Good agreement between experimental and theoretically calculated size dependence of the bright-dark exciton slitting is achieved. The recom-bination rates of the bright and dark excitons and the bright to dark relaxation rate are measured by time-resolved techniques.

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate analytically the properties of the disordered Bernoulli model of planar matching. This model is characterized by a topological phase transition, yielding complete planar matching solutions only above a critical density threshold. We develop a combinatorial procedure of arcs expansion that explicitly takes into account the contribution of short arcs, and allows to obtain an accurate analytical estimation of the critical value by reducing the global constrained problem to a set of local ones. As an application to a toy representation of the RNA secondary structures, we suggest generalized models that incorporate a one-to-one correspondence between the contact matrix and the RNA-type sequence, thus giving sense to the notion of effective non-integer alphabets., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures, published version

Abstract

Topological constraints can affect both equilibrium and dynamic properties of polymer systems and can play a role in the organization of chromosomes. Despite many theoretical studies, the effects of topological constraints on the equilibrium state of a single compact polymer have not been systematically studied. Here we use simulations to address this longstanding problem. We find that sufficiently long unknotted polymers differ from knotted ones in the spatial and topological states of their subchains. The unknotted globule has subchains that are mostly unknotted and form asymptotically compact RG(s) ∼ s1/3 crumples. However, crumples display a high fractal dimension of the surface db = 2.8, forming excessive contacts and interpenetrating each other. We conclude that this topologically constrained equilibrium state resembles a conjectured crumpled globule [Grosberg et al., Journal de Physique, 1988, 49, 2095], but differs from its idealized hierarchy of self-similar, isolated and compact crumples., MIT-France Seed Fund, National Cancer Institute (U.S.). Abstract

This paper deals with homogenization of divergence form second order parabolic operators whose coefficients are periodic with respect to the spatial variables and random stationary in time. Under proper mixing assumptions, we study the limit behaviour of the normalized difference between solutions of the original and the homogenized problems. The asymptotic behaviour of this difference depends crucially on the ratio between spatial and temporal scaling factors. Here we study the case of self-similar parabolic diffusion scaling.

Abstract

GBAR is a project aiming at measuring the free fall acceleration of gravity for antimatter, namely antihydrogen atoms ($\overline{\mathrm{H}}$). Precision of this timing experiment depends crucially on the dispersion of initial vertical velocities of the atoms as well as on the reliable control of their distribution. We propose to use a new method for shaping the distribution of vertical velocities of $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$, which improves these factors simultaneously. The method is based on quantum reflection of elastically and specularly bouncing $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ with small initial vertical velocity on a bottom mirror disk, and absorption of atoms with large initial vertical velocities on a top rough disk. We estimate statistical and systematic uncertainties, and show that the accuracy for measuring the free fall acceleration $\overline{g}$ of $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ could be pushed below $10^{-3}$ under realistic experimental conditions. Abstract

Terahertz light helicity sensitive photoresponse in GaAs/AlGaAs high electron mobility transistors. The helicity dependent detection mechanism is interpreted as an interference of plasma oscillations in the channel of the field-effect-transistors (generalized Dyakonov-Shur model). The observed helicity dependent photoresponse is by several orders of magnitude higher than any earlier reported one. Also linear polarization sensitive photoresponse was registered by the same transistors. The results provide the basis for a new sensitive, all-electric, room-temperature and fast (better than 1 ns) characterisation of all polarization parameters (Stokes parameters) of terahertz radiation. It paves the way towards terahertz ellipsometry and polarization sensitive imaging based on plasma effects in field-effect-transistors., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Given a spanning forest on a large square lattice, we consider by combinatorial methods a correlation function of $k$ paths ($k$ is odd) along branches of trees or, equivalently, $k$ loop--erased random walks. Starting and ending points of the paths are grouped in a fashion a $k$--leg watermelon. For large distance $r$ between groups of starting and ending points, the ratio of the number of watermelon configurations to the total number of spanning trees behaves as $r^{-\nu} \log r$ with $\nu = (k^2-1)/2$. Considering the spanning forest stretched along the meridian of this watermelon, we see that the two--dimensional $k$--leg loop--erased watermelon exponent $\nu$ is converting into the scaling exponent for the reunion probability (at a given point) of $k$ (1+1)--dimensional vicious walkers, $\tilde{\nu} = k^2/2$. Abstract

We present a coherent and operational strategy to calculate, in a nonperturbative way, physical observables in light-front dynamics. This strategy is based on the decomposition of the state vector of any compound system in Fock components, and on the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, together with the so-called Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme. We apply our approach to the calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of a fermion in the Yukawa model, in the nontrivial three-body Fock space truncation, for rather large values of the coupling constant. We find that, once the renormalization conditions are properly taken into account, the form factors do not depend on the regularization scale, when the latter is much larger than the physical masses. We then extend the Fock space by including antifermion degrees of freedom., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

X-ray absorption (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at the L$_{2,3}$ edges of Mn in (Ge,Mn) compounds have been measured and are compared to the results of first principles calculation. Early \textit{ab initio} studies show that the Density Functional Theory (DFT) can very well describe the valence band electronic properties but fails to reproduce a characteristic change of sign in the L$_{3}$ XMCD spectrum of Mn in Ge$_3$Mn$_5$, which is observed in experiments. In this work we demonstrate that this disagreement is partially related to an underestimation of the exchange splitting of Mn 2$p$ core states within the local density approximation. It is shown that the change in sign experimentally observed is reproduced if the exchange splitting is accurately calculated within the Hartree-Fock approximation, while the final states can be still described by the DFT. This approach is further used to calculate the XMCD in different (Ge,Mn) compounds. It demonstrates that the agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra can be improved by combining state of the art calculations for the core and valence states respectively., Comment: 8 pages

Abstract

We present a new method for solving the two-body Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space. It is based on the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and on subsequent projection of the equation on the light-front plane. The method is valid for any kernel given by the irreducible Feynman graphs and for systems of spinless particles or fermions. The Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes in Minkowski space are obtained.
