We develop a new approach to recurrence and the existence of non-constant harmonic functions on infinite weighted graphs. The approach is based on the capacity of subsets of metric boundaries with respect to intrinsic metrics. The main tool is a connection between polar sets in such boundaries and null sets of paths. This connection relies on suitably diverging functions of finite energy.

We study harmonic functions for general Dirichlet forms. First we review consequences of Fukushima's ergodic theorem for the harmonic functions in the domain of the $ L^{p} $ generator. Secondly we prove analogues of Yau's and Karp's Liouville theorems for weakly harmonic functions. Both say that weakly harmonic functions which satisfy certain $ L^{p} $ growth criteria must be constant. As consequence we give an integral criterion for recurrence.

We show that a translation bounded measure has pure point diffraction if and only if it is mean almost periodic. We then go on and show that a translation bounded measure solves what we call the phase problem if and only if it is Besicovitch almost periodic. Finally, we show that a translation bounded measure solves the phase problem independent of the underlying van Hove sequence if and only if it is Weyl almost periodic. These results solve fundamental issues in the theory of pure point diffraction and answer questions of Lagarias., Comment: 87 pages

We introduce a class of subshifts governed by finitely many two-sided infinite words. We call these words leading sequences. We show that any locally constant cocycle over such a subshift is uniform. From this we obtain Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero for associated Jacobi operators if the subshift is aperiodic. Our class covers all simple Toeplitz subshifts as well as all Sturmian subshifts. We apply our results to the spectral theory of Schreier graphs for uncountable families of groups acting on rooted trees.

We show that a generic quasi-periodic Schr\"odinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ has purely singular spectrum. That is, for any minimal translation flow on a finite-dimensional torus, there is a residual set of continuous sampling functions such that for each of these sampling functions, the Schr\"odinger operator with the resulting potential has empty absolutely continuous spectrum., Comment: 11 pages

We study pairs of Dirichlet forms related by an intertwining order isomorphisms between the associated $L^2$-spaces. We consider the measurable, the topological and the geometric setting respectively. In the measurable setting, we deal with arbitrary (irreducible) Dirichlet forms and show that any intertwining order isomorphism is necessarily unitary (up to a constant). In the topological setting we deal with quasi-regular forms and show that any intertwining order isomorphism induces a quasi-homeomorphism between the underlying spaces. In the geometric setting we deal with both regular Dirichlet forms as well as resistance forms and essentially show that the geometry defined by these forms is preserved by intertwining order isomorphisms. In particular, we prove in the strongly local regular case that intertwining order isomorphisms induce isometries with respect to the intrinsic metrics between the underlying spaces under fairly mild assumptions. This applies to a wide variety of metric measure spaces including $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$-spaces, complete weighted Riemannian manifolds and complete quantum graphs. In the non-local regular case our results cover in particular graphs as well as fractional Laplacians as arising in the treatment of $\alpha$-stable L\'evy processes. For resistance forms we show that intertwining order isomorphisms are isometries with respect to the resistance metrics. Our results can can be understood as saying that diffusion always determines the Hilbert space, and -- under natural compatibility assumptions -- the topology and the geometry respectively. As special instances they cover earlier results for manifolds and graphs.

We study combinatorial properties of the subshift induced by the substitution that describes Lysenok's presentation of Grigorchuk's group of intermediate growth by generators and relators. This subshift has recently appeared in two different contexts: on one hand, it allowed to embed Grigorchuk's group in a topological full group, and on the other hand, it was useful in the spectral theory of Laplacians on the associated Schreier graphs., Comment: 8 pages; part of the material discussed in the paper was originally contained in (earlier versions of) arXiv:1510.00545 and arXiv:1412.6822. We study dynamical systems $(X,G,m)$ with a compact metric space $X$ and a locally compact, $\sigma$-compact, abelian group $G$. We show that such a system has discrete spectrum if and only if a certain space average over the metric is a Bohr almost periodic function. In this way, this average over the metric plays for general dynamical systems a similar role as the autocorrelation measure plays in the study of aperiodic order for special dynamical systems based on point sets., Comment: 15 pages

It is well known that, given an equivariant and continuous (in a suitable sense) family of selfadjoint operators in a Hilbert space over a minimal dynamical system, the spectrum of all operators from that family coincides. As shown recently similar results also hold for suitable families of non-selfadjoint operators in $\ell^p (\ZM)$. Here, we generalize this to a large class of bounded linear operator families on Banach-space valued $\ell^p$-spaces over countable discrete groups. We present a simple observation showing that the heat kernel on a locally finite graph behaves for short times $t$ roughly like $t^d$, where $d$ is the combinatorial distance. This is very different from the classical Varadhan type behavior on manifolds. Moreover, this also gives that short time behavior and global behavior of the heat kernel are governed by two different metrics whenever the degree of the graph is not uniformly bounded.

We study spectral properties of Schr��dinger operators on $\RR^d$. The electromagnetic potential is assumed to be determined locally by a colouring of the lattice points in $\ZZ^d$, with the property that frequencies of finite patterns are well defined. We prove that the integrated density of states (spectral distribution function) is approximated by its finite volume analogues, i.e.the normalised eigenvalue counting functions. This paper is concerned with emptyness of the essential spectrum, or equivalently compactness of the semigroup, for perturbations of selfadjoint operators that are bounded below (on an L^2-space). For perturbations by a (nonnegative) potential we obtain a simple criterion for compactness of the semigroup in terms of relative compactness of the operators of multiplication with characteristic functions of sublevel sets. In the context of Dirichlet forms, we can even characterize compactness of the semigroup for measure perturbations. Here, certain 'averages' of the measure outside of compact sets play a role. As an application we obtain compactness of semigroups for Schr��dinger operators with potentials whose sublevel sets are thin at infinity., 10 pages

We give an overview and extension of recent results on ergodic random Schr\"odinger operators for models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The operators we consider are defined on combinatorial or metric graphs, with random potentials, random boundary conditions and random metrics taking values in a finite set. We show that normalized finite volume eigenvalue counting functions converge to a limit uniformly in the energy variable, at least locally. This limit, the integrated density of states (IDS), can be expressed by a closed Shubin-Pastur type trace formula. The set of points of increase of the IDS supports the spectrum and its points of discontinuity are characterized by existence of compactly supported eigenfunctions. We present a construction, which assigns two groupoids, $\Gugamma$ and $\Gmgamma$, to an inverse semigroup $\Gamma$. By definition, $\Gmgamma$ is a subgroupoid (even a reduction) of $\Gugamma$. The construction unifies known constructions for groupoids. More precisely, the groupoid $\Gugamma$ is shown to be isomorphic to the universal groupoid of $\Gamma$ introduced by Paterson. For $\Gamma$ arising from graphs resp. tilings, the groupoid $\Gmgamma$ is the graph groupoid introduced by Kumjian et al. resp. the tiling groupoid introduced by Kellendonk. We obtain a characterisation of open invariant sets in $\Gmgamma^{(0)}$ in terms of certain order ideals of $\Gammanull$ for a large class of $\Gamma$ (including those arising from graphs and from tilings). If $\Gmgamma$ is essentially principal this gives a characterization of the ideal structure of $\Cred(\Gmgamma)$ by a theory of Renault. In particular, we then obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on $\Gamma$ for simplicity of $\Cred(\Gmgamma)$. We prove quantum dynamical lower bounds for one-dimensional continuum Schr��dinger operators that possess critical energies for which there is slow growth of transfer matrix norms and a large class of compactly supported initial states. We consider a random family of Schr\"odinger operators on a cover $X$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $M = X/\Gamma$. We present several results on their spectral theory, in particular almost sure constancy of the spectral components and existence and non-randomness of an integrated density of states. We also sketch a groupoid based general framework which allows to treat basic features of random operators in different contexts in a unified way. We consider discrete one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators with quasi-Sturmian potentials. We present a new approach to the trace map dynamical system which is independent of the initial conditions and establish a characterization of the spectrum in terms of bounded trace map orbits. Using this, it is shown that the operators have purely singular continuous spectrum and their spectrum is a Cantor set of Lebesgue measure zero. We also exhibit a subclass having purely $\alpha$-continuous spectrum. All these results hold uniformly on the hull generated by a given potential., Comment: 20 pages

We study the spectral properties of discrete one-dimensional Schr��dinger operators with Sturmian potentials. It is shown that the point spectrum is always empty. Moreover, for rotation numbers with bounded density, we establish purely $��$-continuous spectrum, uniformly for all phases. The proofs rely on the unique decomposition property of Sturmian potentials, a mass-reproduction technique based upon a Gordon-type argument, and on the Jitomirskaya-Last extension of the Gilbert-Pearson theory of subordinacy., 12 pages

This article is concerned with crossed products and their applications to random operators. We study the von Neumann algebra of a dynamical system using the underlying Hilbert algebra structure. This gives a particularly easy way to introduce a trace on this von Neumann algebra. We review several formulas for this trace, show how it comes as an application of Connes' non commutative integration theory and discuss Shubin's trace formula. We then restrict ourselves to the case of an action of a group on a group and include new proofs for some theorems of Bellissard and Testard on an analogue of the classical Plancherel Theorem. We show that the integrated density of states is a spectral measure in the periodic case, therby generalizing a result of Kaminker and Xia. Finally, we discuss duality results and apply a method of Gordon et al. to establish a duality result for crossed products by Z., Comment: 22 pages
