The problem of modifying a network topology in such a way as to delay the propagation of a disease with minimal disruption of the network capacity to reroute goods/items/passengers is considered here. We find an approximate solution to the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model, which constitutes a tight upper bound to its exact solution. This upper bound allows direct structure-epidemic dynamic relations via the total communicability function. Using this approach we propose a strategy to remove edges in a network that significantly delays the propagation of a disease across the network with minimal disruption of its capacity to deliver goods/items/passengers. We apply this strategy to the analysis of the U.K. airport transportation network weighted by the number of passengers transported in the year 2003. We find that the removal of all flights connecting four origin-destination pairs in the U.K. delays the propagation of a disease by more than 300\%, with a minimal deterioration of the transportation capacity of this network. The paper is devoted to the analysis of the blow-ups of derivatives, gradient catastrophes and dynamics of mappings of $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n$ associated with the $n$-dimensional homogeneous Euler equation. Several characteristic features of the multi-dimensional case ($n>1$) are described. Existence or nonexistence of blow-ups in different dimensions, boundness of certain linear combinations of blow-up derivatives and the first occurrence of the gradient catastrophe are among of them. It is shown that the potential solutions of the Euler equations exhibit blow-up derivatives in any dimenson $n$. Several concrete examples in two- and three-dimensional cases are analysed. We study a boundary value problem related to the search of standing waves for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) on graphs. Precisely we are interested in characterizing the standing waves of NLS posed on the {\it double-bridge graph}, in which two semi-infinite half-lines are attached at a circle at different vertices. At the two vertices the so-called Kirchhoff boundary conditions are imposed. The configuration of the graph is characterized by two lengths, $L_1$ and $L_2$, and we are interested in the existence and properties of standing waves of given frequency $\omega$. For every $\omega>0$ only solutions supported on the circle exist (cnoidal solutions), and only for a rational value of $L_1/L_2$; they can be extended to every $\omega\in \mathbb{R}$. In the present paper the Airy operator on star graphs is defined and studied. The Airy operator is a third order differential operator arising in different contexts, but our main concern is related to its role as the linear part of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, usually studied on a line or a half-line. The first problem treated and solved is its correct definition, with different characterizations, as a skew-adjoint operator on a star graph, a set of lines connecting at a common vertex representing, for example, a network of branching channels. A necessary condition turns out to be that the graph is balanced, i.e. there is the same number of ingoing and outgoing edges at the vertex. The simplest example is that of the line with a point interaction at the vertex. In these cases the Airy dynamics is given by a unitary or isometric (in the real case) group. In particular the analysis provides the complete classification of boundary conditions giving momentum (i.e., $L^2$-norm of the solution) preserving evolution on the graph. A second more general problem here solved is the characterization of conditions under which the Airy operator generates a contraction semigroup. In this case unbalanced star graphs are allowed. In both unitary and contraction dynamics, restrictions on admissible boundary conditions occur if conservation of mass (i.e., integral of the solution) is further imposed. The above well posedness results can be considered preliminary to the analysis of nonlinear wave propagation on branching structures.

We consider a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) posed on a graph or network composed of a generic compact part to which a finite number of half-lines are attached. We call this structure a starlike graph. At the vertices of the graph interactions of $\delta$-type can be present and an overall external potential is admitted. Under general assumptions on the potential, we prove that the NLS is globally well-posed in the energy domain. We are interested in minimizing the energy of the system on the manifold of constant mass ($L^2$-norm). When existing, the minimizer is called ground state and it is the profile of an orbitally stable standing wave for the NLS evolution. We prove that a ground state exists for sufficiently small masses whenever the quadratic part of the energy admits a simple isolated eigenvalue at the bottom of the spectrum (the linear ground state). This is a wide generalization of a result previously obtained for a star graph with a single vertex. The main part of the proof is devoted to prove the concentration compactness principle for starlike structures; this is non trivial due to the lack of translation invariance of the domain. Then we show that a minimizing bounded $H^1$ sequence for the constrained NLS energy with external linear potentials is in fact convergent if its mass is small enough. In recent years, the near diagonal asymptotics of the equivariant components of the Szegö kernel of a positive line bundle on a compact symplectic manifold have been studied extensively by many authors. As a natural generalization of this theme, here we consider the local scaling asymptotics of the Toeplitz quantization of a Hamiltonian symplectomorphism, and specifically how they concentrate on the graph of the underlying classical map.

We consider classical three-body interactions on a Euclidean line depending on the reciprocal distance of the particles and admitting four functionally independent quadratic in the momenta first integrals. These systems are superseparable (i.e. multiseparable), superintegrable and equivalent (up to rescalings) to a one-particle system in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. Common features of the dynamics are discussed. We show how to determine the quantum symmetry operators associated with the first integrals considered here but do not analyze the corresponding quantum dynamics. The conformal superseparability is proved and examples of conformal first integrals are given. The conditions for R-separation of variables for the conformally invariant Laplace equation on an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold are determined and compared with the conditions for the additive separation of the null geodesic Hamilton-Jacobi equation. An important problem in geometric quantization is that of quantizing certain classes of Lagrangian submanifolds, so-called Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds, equipped with a smooth half-density. A procedure for this in the complex projective setting is, roughly speaking, to apply the Szego kernel of the quantizing line bundle to a certain induced delta function supported on the submanifold. If the quantizing line bundle L is replaced by its k-th tensor power, and k tends to infinity, the resulting quantum states u_k concentrate asymptotically on the submanifold. This note deals with the scaling asymptotics of the u_k's along the submanifold; in particular, we point out a natural factorization in the corresponding asymptotic expansion, and provide some remainder estimates., Comment: exposition improved

The paper is an inquiry of the algebraic foundations of the theory of dispersionless integrable hierarchies, like the dispersionless KP and modified KP hierarchies and the universal Whitham's hierarchy of genus zero. It stands out for the idea of interpreting these hierarchies as equations of coisotropic deformations for the structure constants of certain associative algebras. It discusses the link between the structure constants and the Hirota's tau function, and shows that the dispersionless Hirota's bilinear equations are, within this approach, a way of writing the associativity conditions for the structure constants in terms of the tau function. An ensemble of particles in thermal equilibrium at temperature $T$, modeled by Nos\`e-Hoover dynamics, moves on a triangular lattice of oriented semi-disk elastic scatterers. Despite the scatterer asymmetry a directed transport is clearly ruled out by the second law of thermodynamics. Introduction of a polarized zero mean monochromatic field creates a directed stationary flow with nontrivial dependence on temperature and field parameters. We consider the geometrical aspects of the Krichever map in the context of Jacobian Super KP hierarchy. We use the representation of the hierarchy based on the Faa` di bruno recursion relations, considered as the cocycle condition for the natural double complex associated with the deformations of super Krichever data. We discuss geometrical aspects of Higgs systems and Toda field theory in the framework of the theory of vector bundles on Riemann surfaces of genus greater than one. We point out how Toda fields can be considered as equivalent to Higgs systems -- a connection on a vector bundle $E$ together with an End($E$)--valued one form both in the standard and in the Conformal Affine case.
