We have investigated the nature and origin of the Fe K emission lines in Mrk~205 using observations with {\it Suzaku} and {\it XMM-Newton}, aiming to resolve the ambiguity between a broad emission line and multiple unresolved lines of higher ionization. We detect the presence of a narrow Fe K$\alpha$ emission line along with a broad band Compton reflection hump at energies $E>10 \rm \, keV$. These are consistent with reflected emission of hard X-ray photons off a Compton thick material of $N_{\rm H} \ge 2.15\times 10^{24} \rm cm^{-2}$. In addition we detect a partially covering ionized absorption with ionization parameter $\log(\xi/\rm erg\, cm\, s^{-1})=1.9_{-0.5}^{+0.1}$, column density $N_{\rm H}=(5.6_{-1.9}^{+2.0})\times 10^{22}\rm cm^{-2}$ and a covering factor of $0.22_{-0.06}^{+0.09}$. We detect the presence of emission arising out of ionized disk reflection contributing in the soft and the hard X-rays consistently in all the observations. We however, could not definitely ascertain the presence of a relativistically broadened Fe line in the X-ray spectra. Using relativistic reflection model, we found that the data are unable to statistically distinguish between the scenarios when the super-massive black hole is non-rotating and when it is maximally spinning. Using the disk reflection model we also find that the accretion disk of the AGN may be truncated at a distance $6R_{\rm G}, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the coexistence of powerful gas outflows observed in millimeter and X-ray data of the Radio-Loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544. Thanks to the large collecting power of the Large Millimeter Telescope, a prominent line arising from the 12CO(1-0) transition was revealed in recent observations of this source. The complex profile is composed by a narrow double-peak line and a broad wing. While the double-peak structure may be arising in a disk of molecular material, the broad wing is interpreted as the signature of a massive outflow of molecular gas with an approximate bulk velocity of -660 km/s. This molecular wind is likely associated to a multi-component X-ray Ultra-Fast Outflow with velocities reaching up to ~0.1c and column densities in the range 10^{21-23.9} cm^-2 that was reported in the source prior to the LMT observations. The momentum load estimated in the two gas phases indicates that within the observational uncertainties the outflow is consistent with being propagating through the galaxy and sweeping up the gas while conserving its energy. This scenario, which has been often postulated as a viable mechanism of how AGN feedback takes place, has so far been observed only in ULIRGs sources. IRAS 17020+4544 with bolometric and infrared luminosity respectively of 5X10^{44} erg/s and 1.05X10^{11} L_sun appears to be an example of AGN feedback in a NLSy1 Galaxy (a low power AGN). In this paper we present an overview of the MAGNA (Multiple AGN Activity) project aiming at a comprehensive study of multiple supemassive black hole systems. With the main goal to characterize the sources in merging systems at different stages of evolution, we selected a sample of objects optically classified as multiple systems on the basis of emission line diagnostics and started a massive multiband observational campaign. Here we report on the discovery of the exceptionally high AGN density compact group SDSS~J0959+1259. A multiband study suggests that strong interactions are taking place among its galaxies through tidal forces, therefore this system represents a case study for physical mechanisms that trigger nuclear activity and star formation. The morphology of the circumnuclear gas accreting onto supermassive black holes in Seyfert galaxies remains a topic of much debate. As the innermost regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are spatially unresolved, X-ray spectroscopy, and in particular line-of-sight absorption variability, is a key diagnostic to map out the distribution of gas. Observations of variable X-ray absorption in multiple Seyferts and over a wide range of timescales indicate the presence of clumps/clouds of gas within the circumnuclear material. Eclipse events by clumps transiting the line of sight allow us to explore the properties of the clumps over a wide range of radial distances from the optical/UV Broad Line Region (BLR) to beyond the dust sublimation radius. Time-resolved absorption events have been extremely rare so far, but suggest a range of density profiles across Seyferts. We resolve a weeks-long absorption event in the Seyfert NGC 3227. We examine six Suzaku and twelve Swift observations from a 2008 campaign spanning 5 weeks. We use a model accounting for the complex spectral interplay of three differently-ionized absorbers. We perform time-resolved spectroscopy to discern the absorption variability behavior. We also examine the IR-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) to test for reddening by dust. The 2008 absorption event is due to moderately-ionized ($\log \xi\sim 1.2-1.4$) gas covering 90% of the line of sight. We resolve the density profile to be highly irregular, in contrast to a previous symmetric and centrally-peaked event mapped with RXTE in the same object. The UV data do not show significant reddening, suggesting that the cloud is dust-free. The 2008 campaign has revealed a transit by a filamentary, moderately-ionized cloud of variable density that is likely located in the BLR, and possibly part of a disk wind., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A

Many techniques for measuring neutron star radii rely on absolute flux measurements in the X-rays. As a result, one of the fundamental uncertainties in these spectroscopic measurements arises from the absolute flux calibrations of the detectors being used. Using the stable X-ray burster, GS 1826-238, and its simultaneous observations by Chandra HETG/ACIS-S and RXTE/PCA as well as by XMM-Newton EPIC-pn and RXTE/PCA, we quantify the degree of uncertainty in the flux calibration by assessing the differences between the measured fluxes during bursts. We find that the RXTE/PCA and the Chandra gratings measurements agree with each other within their formal uncertainties, increasing our confidence in these flux measurements. In contrast, XMM-Newton EPIC-pn measures 14.0$\pm$0.3 % less flux than the RXTE/PCA. This is consistent with the previously reported discrepancy with the flux measurements of EPIC-pn, compared to EPIC-MOS1, MOS2 and ACIS-S detectors. We also show that any intrinsic time dependent systematic uncertainty that may exist in the calibration of the satellites has already been implicity taken into account in the neutron star radius measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Recent X-ray observations show absorbing winds with velocities up to mildly-relativistic values of the order of ~0.1c in a limited sample of 6 broad-line radio galaxies. They are observed as blue-shifted Fe XXV-XXVI K-shell absorption lines, similarly to the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) reported in Seyferts and quasars. In this work we extend the search for such Fe K absorption lines to a larger sample of 26 radio-loud AGNs observed with XMM-Newton and Suzaku. The sample is drawn from the Swift BAT 58-month catalog and blazars are excluded. X-ray bright FR II radio galaxies constitute the majority of the sources. Combining the results of this analysis with those in the literature we find that UFOs are detected in >27% of the sources. However, correcting for the number of spectra with insufficient signal-to-noise, we can estimate that the incidence of UFOs is this sample of radio-loud AGNs is likely in the range f=(50+/-20)%. A photo-ionization modeling of the absorption lines with XSTAR allows to estimate the distribution of their main parameters. The observed outflow velocities are broadly distributed between v_out 10^22 cm^-2. Overall, these characteristics are consistent with the presence of complex accretion disk winds in a significant fraction of radio-loud AGNs and demonstrate that the presence of relativistic jets does not preclude the existence of winds, in accordance with several theoretical models., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from a homogeneous analysis of the broadband 0.3-10 keV CCD resolution as well as of soft X-ray high-resolution grating spectra of a hard X-ray flux-limited sample of 26 Seyfert galaxies observed with XMM-Newton. Our goal is to characterise the warm absorber (WA) properties along the line-of-sight to the active nucleus. We significantly detect WAs in $65\%$ of the sample sources. Our results are consistent with WAs being present in at least half of the Seyfert galaxies in the nearby Universe, in agreement with previous estimates . We find a gap in the distribution of the ionisation parameter in the range $0.5, Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRAS

In this work, the analysis of multi-epoch (1995-2010) X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy H0557-385 is presented. The wealth of data presented in this analysis show that the source exhibits dramatic spectral variability, from a typical unabsorbed Seyfert 1 type spectrum to a Compton-thin absorbed state, on time scales of ~5 years. This extreme change in spectral shape can be attributed to variations in the column density and covering fraction of a neutral absorbing medium attenuating the emission from the central continuum source. Evidence for Compton reflection of the intrinsic nuclear emission is present in each of the spectra, though this feature is most prominent in the low-state spectra, where the associated Fe emission line complex is clearly visible. In addition to the variable absorbing medium, a warm absorber component has been detected in each spectral state. Optical spectroscopy concurrent with the 2010 XMM-Newton observation campaign have detected the presence of broad optical emission lines during an X-ray absorption event.From the analysis of both X-ray and optical spectroscopic data, it has been inferred that the X-ray spectral variability is a result of obscuration of the central emission region by a clumpy absorber covering >80 per cent of the source with an average column density of NH ~7x10^{23} cm^{-2}, and which is located outside the broad line region at a distance from the central source consistent with the dust sublimation radius of the AGN., Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 15 pages, 7 figures

We report first X-ray Chandra observations of a sample of seven low luminosity compact (LLC) sources. They belong to a class of young compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Four of them have been detected, the other three have upper limit estimations for X-ray flux, one CSS galaxy is associated with an X-ray cluster. We have used the new observations together with the observational data for known strong CSS and gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) objects and large scale FRIs and FRIIs to study the relation between morphology, X-ray properties and excitation modes in radio-loud AGNs. We found that: (1) The low power objects fit well to the already established X-ray - radio luminosity correlation for AGNs and occupy the space among, weaker in the X-rays, FRI objects. (2) The high excitation galaxies (HEG) and low excitation galaxies (LEG) occupy distinct locus in the radio/X-ray luminosity plane, notwithstanding their evolutionary stage. This is in agreement with the postulated different origin of the X-ray emission in these two group of objects. (3) We have tested the AGN evolution models by comparing the radio/X-ray luminosity ratio with the size of the sources, and indirectly, with their age. We conclude that the division for two different X-ray emission modes, namely originate in the base of the relativistic jet (FRIs) or in the accretion disk (FRIIs) is already present among the younger compact AGNs. (4) Finally, we found that the CSS sources are less obscured than the more compact GPSs in X-rays. X-ray bright active galactic nuclei represent a unique astrophysical laboratory for studying accretion physics around super-massive black holes. 4U 1344-60 is a bright Seyfert galaxy which revealed relativistic reflection features in the archival XMM-Newton observation. We present the spectroscopic results of new data obtained with the Suzaku satellite and compare them with the previous XMM-Newton observation. The X-ray continuum of 4U 1344-60 can be well described by a power-law component with the photon index ~ 1.7 modified by a fully and a partially covering local absorbers. We measured a substantial decrease of the fraction of the partially absorbed radiation from around 45% in the XMM-Newton observation to less than 10% in the Suzaku observation while the power-law slope remains constant within uncertainties. The iron line in the Suzaku spectrum is relatively narrow, $\sigma=(0.08 \pm 0.02)$ keV, without any suggestion for relativistic broadening. Regarding this, we interpret the iron line in the archival XMM-Newton spectrum as a narrow line of the same width plus an additional red-shifted emission around 6.1 keV. No evidence of the relativistic reflection is present in the Suzaku spectra. The detected red-shifted iron line during the XMM-Newton observation could be a temporary feature either due to locally enhanced emission or decreased ionisation in the innermost accretion flow., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted to A&A

We aim at constraining the geometry of the reprocessing matter in the nearby prototypical Seyfert 2 Galaxy Markarian 3 by studying the time evolution of spectral components associated to the primary AGN emission and to its Compton-scattering. We have analyzed archival spectroscopic observations of Markarian 3 taken over the last 12 years with the XMM-Newton, Suzaku and Swift observatories, as well as data taken during a monitoring campaign activated by us in 2012. The timescale of the Compton-reflection component variability (originally discovered by ASCA in the mid-'90s) is ~64 days. This upper limit improves by more than a factor of 15 previous estimates of the Compton-reflection variability timescale for this source. When the light curve of the Compton-reflection continuum in the 4-5 keV band is correlated with the 15-150 keV Swift/BAT curve a delay ~1200 days is found. The cross-correlation results are dependent on the model used to fit the spectra, although the detection of the Compton-reflection component variability is independent of the range of models employed to fit the data. Reanalysis of an archival Chandra image of Markarian 3 indicates that the Compton-reflection and the Fe K-alpha emitting regions are extended to the North up to ~300 pc. The combination of these findings suggests that the optically-thick reprocessor in Markarian 3 is clumpy. There is mounting experimental evidence for the structure of the optically-thick gas and dust in the nuclear environment of nearby heavily obscured AGN to be extended and complex. We discuss possible modifications to the standard unification scenarios encompassing this complexity. [Context]: NGC 3147 is so far the most convincing case of a >true> Seyfert 2 galaxy, i.e. a source genuinely lacking the broad line regions. [Aims]: We obtained a Suzaku observation with the double aim to study in more detail the iron line complex, and to check the Compton-thick hypothesis for the lack of observed optical broad lines. [Methods]: The Suzaku XIS and HXD/PIN spectra of the source were analysed in detail. [Results]: The line complex is composed of at least two unresolved lines, one at about 6.45 keV and the other one at about 7 keV, most likely identified with Fe XVII/XIX, the former, and Fe XXVI, the latter. The high-ionization line can originate either in a photoionized matter or in an optically thin thermal plasma. In the latter case, an unusually high temperature is implied. In the photoionized model case, the large equivalent width can be explained either by an extreme iron overabundance or by assuming that the source is Compton-thick. In the Compton-thick hypothesis, however, the emission above 2 keV is mostly due to a highly ionized reflector, contrary to what is usually found in Compton-thick Seyfert 2s, where reflection from low ionized matter dominates. Moreover, the source flux varied between the XMM-Newton and the Suzaku observations, taken 3.5 years apart, confirming previous findings and indicating that the size of the emitting region must be smaller than a parsec. The hard X-ray spectrum is also inconclusive on the Compton-thick hypothesis. We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton RGS high resolution X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mrk573. This analysis is complemented by the study of the Chandra image, and its comparison to optical (HST) and radio (VLA) data. The soft X-ray emission is mainly due to gas photoionised by the central AGN, as indicated by the detection of radiative recombination continua from OVII and OVIII, as well as by the prominence of the OVII forbidden line. This result is confirmed by the best fit obtained with a self-consistent CLOUDY photoionisation model. However, a collisionally excited component is also required, in order to reproduce the FeXVII lines, accounting for about 1/3 of the total luminosity in the 15-26 A band. Once adopted the same model in the Chandra ACIS data, another photoionised component, with higher ionisation parameter, is needed to take into account emission from higher Z metals. The broadband ACIS spectrum also confirms the Compton-thick nature of the source. The imaging analysis shows the close morphological correspondence between the soft X-ray and the [OIII] emission. The radio emission appears much more compact, although clearly aligned with the narrow line region. The collisional phase of the soft X-ray emission may be due to starburst, requiring a star formation rate of $\simeq5-9$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, but there is no clear evidence of this kind of activity from other wavelengths. On the other hand, it may be related to the radio ejecta, responsible for the heating of the plasma interacting with the outflow, but the estimated pressure of the hot gas is much larger than the pressure of the radio jets, assuming equipartition and under reasonable physical parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal

X-ray observations of unabsorbed active galactic nuclei provide an opportunity to explore the innermost regions of supermassive black hole accretion discs. Our goal in this paper is to investigate the central environment of a Seyfert 1.5 galaxy IRAS 05078+1626. We studied the time-averaged spectrum obtained with the EPIC and RGS instruments. A power-law continuum (photon index ~ 1.75) dominates the 2-10 keV energy range. A narrow iron K alpha spectral line is clearly seen, presumably originating in a distant torus, but no broad relativistic component was detected. However, the power law and the iron K alpha line alone do not provide a satisfactory fit in the soft X-ray band whose spectrum can be explained by the combination of three components: a) a cold photoelectric absorber with column density ~ 10^(21) cm^(-2). This gas could be located either in outer parts of the accretion disc, at the rim of the torus or farther out in the host galaxy; b) a warm absorber with high ionization parameter (log(xi) ~ 2.2) and column density ~ 10^(24) cm^(-2); c) an ionized reflection where the reflecting gas could be either in the inner wall of a warm absorber cone or in an ionized accretion disc. The first X-ray spectroscopic measurement of IRAS05078+1626 unveils some of the standard ingredients in Seyfert galaxies, such as a power-law primary continuum, modified by reflection from the accretion disc and by the effect of complex, multi-phase obscuration. We present a deep (~5.8 days) 0.3-2 keV high-resolution spectrum of NGC1365, collected with the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton. The spectrum is dominated by strong recombination lines of He- and H-like transitions from carbon to silicon, as well as by L transitions from FeXVII. The continuum is strong, especially in the 10 to 20 Angstrom, range. Formal fits require two optically thin, collisionally ionised plasma components, with temperatures ~300 and ~640 eV. However, they leave the bulk of the forbidden components of the He-alpha OVII and NVI triplets unaccounted for. These features can be explained as being produced by photoionised gas. NGC1365 is therefore the first obscured AGN, whose high-resolution X-ray spectrum requires both collisional ionisation and photoionisation. The relative weakness of photoionisation does not stem from the intrinsic weakness of its AGN, whose X-ray luminosity is ~10^{42} erg/s. We suggest that it may instead come from the line-of-sight from the active nucleus to the NLR being blocked by optically thick matter in the broad line region, at the same time responsible for the large observed variation of the column density obscuring the X-ray active nucleus. We presented CAIXA, a Catalogue of AGN in the XMM-Newton Archive, in a companion paper. Here, a systematic search for correlations between the X-ray spectral properties and the multiwavelength data was performed for the sources in CAIXA. All the significant (>99.9% confidence level) correlations are discussed along with their physical implications on current models of AGN. Two main correlations are discussed in this paper: a) a very strong anti-correlation between the FWHM of the H$��$ optical line and the ratio between the soft and the hard X-ray luminosity. Although similar anti-correlations between optical line width and X-ray spectral steepness have already been discussed in the literature (see e.g., Laor et al. 1994, Boller et al. 1996, Brandt et al. 1997), we consider the formulation we present in this paper is more fundamental, as it links model-independent quantities. Coupled with a strong anti-correlation between the V to hard X-ray flux ratio and the H$��$ FHWM, it supports scenarios for the origin of the soft excess in AGN, which require strong suppression of the hard X-ray emission; b) a strong (and expected) correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the black hole mass. Its slope, flatter than 1, is consistent with Eddington ratio-dependent bolometric corrections, such as that recently proposed by Vasudevan & Fabian (2009). Moreover, we critically review through various statistical tests the role that distance biases play in the strong radio to X-ray luminosity correlation found in CAIXA and elsewhere; we conclude that only complete, unbiased samples (such as that recently published by Behar & Laor, 2008) should be used to draw observational constraints on the origin of radio emission in radio-quiet AGN., 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics; two figures erroneously attached by astroph to the paper were removed

This paper reports on an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk 335 performed as a Target of Opportunity when the source was in an unusually low flux state. The low level of continuum emission unveiled an underlying line-rich soft X-ray spectrum, which can be studied with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer. The emission features have been analysed at high resolution with unprecedented detail for this source. Line ratios diagnostic from H-like and He-like ions indicates that the line emission arises in X-ray photoionised plasma. Extensive simulations have been performed with the CLOUDY photoionisation code. From the comparison of the expected and observed line intensities the physical properties of the line emitting material were derived. Because of the degeneracy in the ionisation parameter, a number of different solutions in terms of electron density and column density of the gas are consistent with the spectral diagnostics. This prevents us from determining uniquely the properties of the plasma; however, the location(s) of the X-ray photoionised gas can be constrained to be within 0.06 pc (outer boundary). This paper reports on a partially simultaneous observation of the bright Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk590, performed by XMM-Newton and Chandra. The long exposure (~100 ks) allows to investigate with great detail the Fe K complex at 6-7 keV and the presence of soft X-ray spectral features. We have analysed XMM-Newton data from the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) in the 0.5-12 keV band and from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) in the 0.35-2.5 keV band, and data from the High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETGs) onboard Chandra. UV and optical data from the Optical Monitor (OM) onboard XMM-Newton are also included in the analysis. The broad band spectrum is well described by an unabsorbed power law and three unresolved Fe~K lines in the 6-7 keV range. The presence of a Compton reflection component and a narrow Fe K line at 6.4 keV is consistent with an origin via torus reflection. The ionised Fe lines at ~6.7 and 7 keV are instead most likely originated by scattering on a warm and ionised gas. The soft X-ray spectrum appears to be almost featureless due to the very bright continuum emission, except for one emission line identified as OVIII Ly alpha detected at ~19 Angstrom by both RGS and Chandra-MEG. The emerging picture consists of an active nucleus seen directly on a "clean" line of sight without intervening material, surrounded by photoionised circumnuclear gas at a high ionisation level. We also study three serendipitous sources in the field of view of Chandra and XMM-Newton. One of these sources may be identified with an ULX of L_{0.3-10 keV}~10^{40} ergs/s., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication on A&A including referee's comments

We performed a detailed analysis of the Chandra and HST images of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC7582. The dust lane, as mapped by the HST NIR and optical images, strongly influences the morphology of the soft X-ray emission, being spatially coincident with excess of X-ray absorption. Two 'hot spots', i.e. regions where emission from higher ionization stages of O and Ne is stronger, are observed in the soft X-ray image. They can be tracers of variations of the ionization parameter, even if, at least for one of them, absorption may be the dominant effect. The positions of the `hot spots' suggest that they are not affected by the star-formation regions observed with HST, being located far away from them. Therefore, the starburst does not seem to play an important role in the photoionization of the soft X-ray emitting gas. The resulting picture is consistent with modified unification scenarios, where the Compton-thick torus coexists with a large-scale Compton-thin material associated with the dust lane and circumnuclear gas is photoionized by the AGN along torus-free lines of sight., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of the soft X-ray emission in obscured AGN is still largely unknown. However, important progresses have been made thanks to the high energy and spatial resolution of XMM-Newton and Chandra. We present a XMM-Newton observation of Markarian 304, a Seyfert 1 galaxy at z = 0.066. The EPIC data show that MKN 304 is affected by heavy (Nh ~10^{23} cm{-2}) obscuration due to ionized gas. A two-phase warm absorber provides an adequate parameterization of this gas. The ionization parameter of the two components is \xi ~6 erg/cm2/s and \xi ~90 erg/cm2/s, respectively. The observed continuum photon index (Gamma ~1.9) is typical for Seyfert 1 galaxies. Two significant emission lines are detected at 0.57 keV and 6.4 keV, respectively. The former is mostly likely due to He-like oxygen triplet emission arising from an ionized plasma (maybe the warm absorber itself). The latter is due to fluorescent emission of K-shell iron in a low-ionization state (FeI--XV). The upper limit for the line width of sigma_{K\alpha}, Comment: MNRAS in press

In this paper we present the current status of a XMM-Newton program to observe an optically-defined, complete and unbiased sample of Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies. The main goal of this project is the measurement of the occurrence rate of transition between transmission- (i.e.: Compton-thin), and reflection-dominated spectral states. These transitions potentially provide information on the distribution of the obscuring matter surrounding the nucleus, and on the duty-cycle of the AGN activity. With about 2/3 of the whole sample being observed, we detected 1 further transition out of 8 observed objects, confirming previous suggestions that these transitions occur on time-scales ~50-100 years., Comment: 4 Latex pages, 5 figures, To appear in the proceedings of the Conference "Multiwavelength AGN Surveys", Mujica R. and Maiolino R. We have performed a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton observation of IGR J16318-4848, to study the properties of the matter responsible for the obscuration and for the emission of Fe and Ni lines. Even if the line of sight material has a column density of about 2x10^24 cm^-2, from the Fe Kalpha line EW and Compton Shoulder we argue that the matter should have an average column density of a few x10^23 cm^-2, along with a covering factor of about 0.1-0.2. The iron Kalpha line varies on time scales as short as 1000 s, implying a size of the emitting region smaller than about 3x10^13 cm. The flux of the line roughly follows the variations of the continuum, but not exactly, suggesting a variation of the geometrical properties of the emitting region on similar time scales., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, pink pages

We report performance verification observations of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the Virgo Cluster with the MOS, pn, and optical monitor instruments on board of XMM-Newton. With the energy sensitive imaging instruments MOS and pn we obtain the first spatially constrained X-ray spectra of the nucleus and the jet of the galaxy. The good photon statistics of the pn and MOS allow a detailed analysis of the radial temperature and abundance distribution of 6 elements. The data provide no indication of a multi-temperature structure for radii less than 2 arcmin. An apparent sharp metal abundance drop deduced for the regions inside this radius is probably due to resonant line scattering., Comment: 7 pages, 14 figures, to be published in the special issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics on first results from XMM-Newton. We present the results of a study based on an XMM-Newton Performance Verification observation of the central 30 arcmin of the nearby spiral galaxy M31. In the 34-ks European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) exposure, we detect 116 sources down to a limiting luminosity of 6 x 10^35 erg/s (0.3--12 keV, d = 760 kpc). The luminosity distribution of the sources detected with XMM-Newton flattens at luminosities below ~ 2.5 x 10^37 erg/s. We make use of hardness ratios for the detected sources in order to distinguish between classes of objects such as super-soft sources and intrinsically hard or highly absorbed sources. We demonstrate that the spectrum of the unresolved emission in the bulge of M31 contains a soft excess which can be fitted with a ~ 0.35-keV optically-thin thermal-plasma component clearly distinct from the composite point-source spectrum. We suggest that this may represent diffuse gas in the centre of M31, and we illustrate its extent in a wavelet-deconvolved image., Comment: to appear in the XMM-Newton special issue of A&A (Vol 365, January 2001). We report on the spectral (pulse averaged) and timing analysis of the ~ 20 ksec observation of the X-ray binary pulsar Vela X-1 performed during the BeppoSAX Science Verification Phase. The source was observed in two different intensity states: the low state is probably due to an erratic intensity dip and shows a decrease of a factor ~ 2 in intensity, and a factor 10 in Nh. We have not been able to fit the 2-100 keV continuum spectrum with the standard (for an X--ray pulsar) power law modified by a high energy cutoff because of the flattening of the spectrum in ~ 10-30 keV. The timing analysis confirms previous results: the pulse profile changes from a five-peak structure for energies less than 15 keV, to a simpler two-peak shape at higher energies. The Fourier analysis shows a very complex harmonic component: up to 23 harmonics are clearly visible in the power spectrum, with a dominant first harmonic for low energy data, and a second one as the more prominent for energies greater than 15 keV. The aperiodic component in the Vela X-1 power spectrum presents a knee at about 1 Hz.
