A discrete countable group G is matricially stable if the finite dimensional approximate unitary representations of G are perturbable to genuine representations in the point-norm topology. For large classes of groups G, we show that matricial stability implies the vanishing of the rational cohomology of G in all nonzero even dimensions. We revisit a method of constructing almost flat K-theory classes of BG which involves the dual assembly map and quasidiagonality properties of G. For linear Hamiltonian $2n\times 2n$ systems $J y'(x) = (\lambda W(x)+H(x))y(x)$ we investigate the problem how the eigenvalues $\lambda$ depend on the entries of the coefficient matrix $H$. This question turns into a deformation equation for $H$ and a partial differential equation for the eigenvalues $\lambda$. We apply our results to various examples, including generalizations of the confluent Heun equation and the Chandrasekhar-Page angular equation. We are mainly concerned with the $2\times 2$ case, and in order to reduce the degrees of freedom in $H$ as much as possible, we will first convert such systems into a complementary triangular form, which is a canonical form with a minimum number of free parameters. Many scalar field theories with attractive self-interactions support exceptionally long-lived, spatially localized and time-periodic field configurations called oscillons. A detailed study of their longevity is important for understanding their applications in cosmology. In this paper, we study gravitational effects on the decay rate and lifetime of dense oscillons, where self-interactions are more or at least equally important compared with gravitational interactions. As examples, we consider the $\alpha$-attractor T-model of inflation and the axion monodromy model, where the potentials become flatter than quadratic at large field values beyond some characteristic field distance $F$ from the minimum. For oscillons with field amplitudes of $\mathcal{O}(F)$ and for $F\ll 0.1 M_\mathrm{pl}$, we find that their evolution is almost identical to cases where gravity is ignored. For $F\sim 0.1 M_\mathrm{pl}$, however, including gravitational interactions reduces the lifetime slightly., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We revisit two-field hybrid inflation as an effective field theory for low-scale inflation with sub-Planckian scalar field ranges. We focus on a prototype model by Stewart because it allows for a red spectral tilt, which still fits the current data. We describe the constraints on this model imposed by current CMB measurements. We then explore the stability of this model to quantum corrections. We find that for relevant, marginal, and at least a finite set of irrelevant operators, some additional mechanism is required to render the model stable to corrections from both quantum field theory and quantum gravity. We outline a possible mechanism by realizing the scalars as compact axions dual to massive $4$-form field strengths, and outline how natural hybrid inflation may be supported by strong dynamics in the dual theory., Comment: 40 pages, 1 figure

In this paper, we investigate the potential-driven inflation models with a disformal coupling to Einstein Gravity, to find out the effects of such a coupling on these models. We consider a simple coupling form which introduces only one parameter, and three inflation models, namely the chaotic inflation, the Higgs inflation, and the monodromy inflation. We find that the disformal coupling can have some modifications to the observational variables of these models such as the power spectrum, the spectral index as well as the tensor/scalar ratio, although not too large due to the constraints on the disformal coupling parameter. With these modifications, one has the opportunity of improving models that lie on the edge of the favorable regions of Planck observational data, such as monodromy inflation. In this note we study homological cycles in the mirror quintic Calabi-Yau threefold which can be realized by special Lagrangian submanifolds. We have used Picard-Lefschetz theory to establish the monodromy action and to study the orbit of Lagrangian vanishing cycles. For many prime numbers $p$ we can compute the orbit modulo $p$. We conjecture that the orbit in homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$ can be determined by these orbits with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p$., Comment: 14 pages

Oscillons are localized states of scalar fields sustained by self interactions. They decay by emitting classical radiation, but their lifetimes are surprisingly large. We revisit the reasons behind their longevity, aiming at how the shape of the scalar potential $V(\phi)$ determines the lifetime. The corpuscular picture, where the oscillon is identified with a bound state of a large number of field quanta, allows to understand lifetimes of order of $10^3$ cycles in generic potentials. At the non-perturbative level, two properties of the scalar potential can substantially boost the lifetime: the flattening of $V(\phi)$ and the positivity of $V''(\phi)$. These properties are realized in the axion monodromy family of potentials. Moreover, this class of models connects continuously with an exceptional potential that admits eternal oscillon solutions. We check these results with a new fast-forward numerical method that allows to evolve in time to stages that cannot be otherwise simulated on a computer. The method exploits the attractor properties of the oscillons and fully accounts for nonlinearities. We find lifetimes up to $10^{14}$ cycles, but larger values are possible. We study monodromy reduction of Fuchsian connections from a sheave theoretic viewpoint, focusing on the case when a singularity of a special connection with four singularities has been resolved. The main tool of study is {based on} a bundle modification technique due to Drinfeld and Oblezin. This approach via invariant spaces and eigenvalue problems allows us not only to explain Erd\'elyi's classical infinite hypergeometric expansions of solutions to Heun equations, but also to obtain new expansions not found in his papers. As a consequence, a geometric proof of Takemura's eigenvalues inclusion theorem is obtained. Finally, we observe a precise matching between the monodromy reduction criteria giving those special solutions of Heun equations and that giving classical solutions of the Painlev\'e VI equation., Comment: Revised after submission. We derive a structure of ℤ[t, t−1]-module bundle from a family of Yang-Yang functions. For the fundamental representation of the complex simple Lie algebra of classical type, we give explicit wall-crossing formula and prove that the monodromy representation of the ℤ[t, t−1]-module bundle is equivalent to the braid group representation induced by the universal R-matrices of Uh(g). We show that two transformations induced on the fiber by the symmetry breaking deformation and respectively the rotation of two complex parameters commute with each other.

A vector bundle $E$ over a projective variety $M$ is called finite if it satisfies a nontrivial polynomial equation with nonnegative integral coefficients. Introducing finite bundles, Nori proved that $E$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite \'etale covering of $M$ is trivializable \cite{No1}. The definition of finite bundles extends naturally to holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex manifolds. We prove that a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold $M$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite \'etale covering of $M$ is holomorphically trivializable. We argue that the equations of motion of quantum field theories in curved backgrounds encode new underlying black hole thermodynamic relations. We define new entropy variation relations. These ``emerge'' through the monodromies that capture the infinitesimal changes in the black hole background produced by the field excitations. This raises the possibility of new thermodynamic relations defined as independent sums involving entropies, temperatures, and angular velocities defined at every black hole horizon. We present explicit results for the sum of all horizon entropy variations for general rotating black holes, in both asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti--de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal and in most cases add up to zero. We also find that these thermodynamic summation relations apply in theories involving multicharge black holes.

We study several geometric and group theoretical problems related to Kodaira fibrations, to more general families of Riemann surfaces, and to surface-by-surface groups. First we provide constraints on Kodaira fibrations that fiber in more than two distinct ways, addressing a question by Catanese and Salter about their existence. Then we show that if the fundamental group of a surface bundle over a surface is a ${\rm CAT}(0)$ group, the bundle must have injective monodromy (unless the monodromy has finite image). Finally, given a family of closed Riemann surfaces (of genus $\ge 2$) with injective monodromy $E\to B$ over a manifold $B$, we explain how to build a new family of Riemann surfaces with injective monodromy whose base is a finite cover of the total space $E$ and whose fibers have higher genus. We apply our construction to prove that the mapping class group of a once punctured surface virtually admits injective and irreducible morphisms into the mapping class group of a closed surface of higher genus., Comment: 32 pages, v3. The relationship of two dimensional quantum field theory and isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems has a long history. Recently four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories joined the party in a multitude of roles. In this paper we study the vacuum expectation values of intersecting half-BPS surface defects in $SU(2)$ theory with $N_f=4$ fundamental hypermultiplets. We show they form a horizontal section of a Fuchsian system on a sphere with $5$ regular singularities, calculate the monodromy, and define the associated isomonodromic tau-function. Using the blowup formula in the presence of half-BPS surface defects, initiated in the companion paper, we obtain the GIL formula, establishing an unexpected relation of the topological string/free fermion regime of supersymmetric gauge theory to classical integrability., Comment: 94 pages; v2. references added, published version

Suppose $\rho_1, \rho_2$ are two $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field, such that the algebraic monodromy group of one of the representations is connected and the representations are locally potentially equivalent at a set of places of positive upper density. We classify such pairs of representations and show that up to twisting by some representation, it is given by a pair of representations one of which is trivial and the other abelian. Mixing of axion fields is widely used to generate EFTs with phenomenologically advantageous features, such as hierarchies between axion couplings to different gauge fields and/or large effective field ranges. While these features are strongly constrained by periodicity for models with only a single axion, mixing has been used in the literature (sometimes incorrectly) to try to evade some of these constraints. In this paper, we ask whether it is possible to use axion mixing to generate an EFT of axions that evades these constraints by flowing to a theory of a non-compact scalar in the IR. We conclude that as long as the light axion is exactly massless, it will inherit the periodicity and associated constraints of the UV theory. However, by giving the light axion a mass, we can relax these constraints with effects proportional to the axion mass squared, including non-quantized couplings and the realignment of monodromy to a light axion with a larger field range. To show this, we consider various examples of axions mixing with other axions or with non-compact scalar fields, and work in a basis where coupling quantization is manifest. This basis makes it clear that in the case where an axion is eaten through the Higgs or Stuckelberg mechanism, the light axion does not have a large effective field range, in contrast to some recent claims in the literature. Additionally, we relate our results about axion EFTs to a well-known fact about gauge theory: that QFTs with compact gauge groups in the UV flow to QFTs with compact gauge groups in the IR, and make this correspondence precise in the 2+1 dimensional case., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the geometry of \'etale $4:1$ coverings of smooth complex genus 2 curves with the monodromy group isomorphic to the Klein four-group. There are two cases, isotropic and non-isotropic depending on the values of the Weil pairing restricted to the group defining the covering. We recall from our previous work \cite{bo} the results concerning the non-isotropic case and fully describe the isotropic case. We show that the necessary information to construct the Klein coverings is encoded in the 6 points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ defining the genus 2 curve. The main result of the paper is the fact that, in both cases the Prym map associated to these coverings is injective. Additionally, we provide a concrete description of the closure of the image of the Prym map inside the corresponding moduli space of polarised abelian varieties., Comment: The proof of injectivity of the Prym map in the non-isotropic case has been corrected. We study the parameter space of cnoidal waves -- the periodic solitons of the Korteweg-de Vries equation -- from the perspective of Virasoro coadjoint orbits. The monodromy method familiar from inverse scattering implies that many, but not all, of these solitons are conformally equivalent to uniform field configurations (constant coadjoint vectors). The profiles that have no uniform representative lie in Lam\'e band gaps and are separated from the others by bifurcation lines along which the corresponding orbits change from elliptic to hyperbolic. We show that such bifurcations can be produced by shoaling: wave profiles become non-uniformizable once their pointedness parameter crosses a certain critical value (which we compute). By combining theorems of Drinfeld and Strauch, we show that the monodromy representation on the special fibre of a Drinfeld modular variety, with level not divisible by the characteristic, is surjective. We illustrate this result in the special case of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-modules in level $t$, and apply this to show that the Kronecker factors of a Drinfeld modular polynomial in rank $r$ are irreducible., Comment: 12 pages

For a split reductive group $G$ over a finite field, we show that the neutral block of its mixed Hecke category with a fixed monodromy under the torus action is monoidally equivalent to the mixed Hecke category of the corresponding endoscopic group $H$ with trivial monodromy. We also extend this equivalence to all blocks. We give two applications. One is a relationship between character sheaves on $G$ with a fixed semisimple parameter and unipotent character sheaves on the endoscopic group $H$, after passing to asymptotic versions. For an ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ on a complete toric surface $X$, we consider the subset $V_{\mathcal{L}} \subset \vert \mathcal{L} \vert$ of irreducible, nodal, rational curves contained in the smooth locus of $X$. We study the monodromy map from the fundamental group of $V_{\mathcal{L}}$ to the permutation group on the set of nodes of a reference curve $C \in V_{\mathcal{L}}$. We identify a certain obstruction map $\varPsi_{X}$ defined on the set of nodes of $C$ and show that the image of the monodromy is exactly the group of deck transformations of $\varPsi_{X}$, provided that $\mathcal{L}$ is sufficiently big (in a sense we precise below). Along the way, we provide a handy tool to compute the image of the monodromy for any pair $(X, \mathcal{L})$. We investigate the dynamics of axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter where the field range is enlarged by a monodromy. The monodromy potential allows sufficient production of dark matter also at larger couplings to the Standard Model particles. The potential typically features a number of "wiggles" that lead to a rapid growth of fluctuations. Using classical-statistical field theory simulations we go beyond the linear regime and treat the system in the non-linear and even non-perturbative regime. For sufficiently strong wiggles the initially homogeneous field is completely converted into fluctuations. The fluctuations correspond to dark matter particles with a non-vanishing velocity and we consider the corresponding restrictions from structure formation as well as the effects on today's dark matter density. We present a scenario that ameliorates the tuning problems present in models of primordial black hole dark matter from inflation. Our setup employs the advantages of gravitational collapse in a long epoch of early matter domination with reheating temperature $\lesssim 10^{6}~\text{GeV}$. Furthermore, we make use of a string-inspired class of models where the inflaton is identified with a non-compact axion field. In this framework, the presence of multiple local minima in the inflaton potential can be traced back to an approximate discrete shift symmetry. This scenario allows the formation of primordial black holes in the observationally viable range of masses ($M_{\text{PBH}}\sim 10^{-13}M_{\odot}-10^{-16}M_{\odot}$) accounting for all dark matter, and in excellent agreement with the CMB. Crucially, we find a significant reduction in the required tuning of the parameters of the inflationary potential, in contrast to the standard case of primordial black hole formation during radiation domination. However, abundant formation of light PBHs during an early phase of matter domination can be more easily in conflict with evaporation bounds. We give a simple proof of the existence of response solutions in some quasi-periodically forced systems with a degenerate fixed points. The same questions were answered in \cite{ss18} using two versions of KAM theory. Our method is based on reformulating the existence of response solutions as a fixed point problem in appropriate spaces of smooth functions. By algebraic manipulations, the fixed point problem is transformed into a contraction. Compared to the KAM method, the present method does not incur a loss of regularity. That is, the solutions we obtain have the same regularity as the forcing. Moreover, the method here applies when problems are only finitely differentiable. It also weakens slightly the non-degeneracy conditions. Since the method is based on the contraction mapping principle, we also obtain automatically smooth dependence on parameters and, when studying complex versions of the problem we discover the new phenomenon of monodromy. We also present results for higher dimensional systems, but for higher dimensional systems, the concept of degenerate fixed points is much more subtle than in one dimensional systems. To illustrate the power of the method, we also consider two problems not studied in \cite{ss18}: the forcing with zero average and second order oscillators. We show that in the zero average forcing case, the solutions are qualitatively different, but the second order oscillators is remarkably similar.

We study the monodromy of meromorphic cyclic $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-opers on the Riemann sphere with a single pole. We prove that the monodromy map, sending such an oper to its Stokes data, is an immersion in the case where the order of the pole is a multiple of $n$. To do this, we develop a method based on the work of M. Jimbo, T. Miwa, and K. Ueno from the theory of isomonodromic deformations. Specifically, we introduce a system of equations that is equivalent to the isomonodromy equations of Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno, but which is adapted to the decomposition of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ as a direct sum of irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})$. Using properties of some structure constants for $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ to analyze this system of equations, we show that deformations of certain families of cyclic $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-opers on the Riemann sphere with a single pole are never infinitesimally isomonodromic., Comment: revised based on referee comments; slight improvement of theorem from previous versions

We describe the exact WKB method from the point of view of abelianization, both for Schr\"odinger operators and for their higher-order analogues (opers). The main new example which we consider is the "$T_3$ equation," an order $3$ equation on the thrice-punctured sphere, with regular singularities at the punctures. In this case the exact WKB analysis leads to consideration of a new sort of Darboux coordinate system on a moduli space of flat $\mathrm{SL}(3)$-connections. We give the simplest example of such a coordinate system, and verify numerically that in these coordinates the monodromy of the $T_3$ equation has the expected asymptotic properties. We consider the parameter space $\mathcal U_d$ of smooth plane curves of degree $d$. The universal smooth plane curve of degree $d$ is a fiber bundle $\mathcal E_d\to\mathcal U_d$ with fiber diffeomorphic to a surface $\Sigma_g$. This bundle gives rise to a monodromy homomorphism $\rho_d:\pi_1(\mathcal U_d)\to\mathrm{Mod}(\Sigma_g)$, where $\mathrm{Mod}(\Sigma_g):=\pi_0(\mathrm{Diff}^+(\Sigma_g))$ is the mapping class group of $\Sigma_g$. The main result of this paper is that the kernel of $\rho_4:\pi_1(\mathcal U_4)\to\mathrm{Mod}(\Sigma_3)$ is isomorphic to $F_\infty\times\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$, where $F_\infty$ is a free group of countably infinite rank. In the process of proving this theorem, we show that the complement $\mathrm{Teich}(\Sigma_g)\setminus\mathcal{H}_g$ of the hyperelliptic locus $\mathcal{H}_g$ in Teichm\"uller space $\mathrm{Teich}(\Sigma_g)$ has the homotopy type of an infinite wedge of spheres. As a corollary, we obtain that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is aspherical. International audience; We consider a non trivial solution to the section condition in the context of ℝ$^{+}$ ×E$_{3(3)}$ exceptional field theory and show that allowing fields to depend on the additional stringy coordinates of the extended internal space permits to describe the monodromies of (p, q) 7-branes in the context of F-theory. General expressions of non trivial fluxes with associated linear and quadratic constraints are obtained via a comparison to the embedding tensor of eight dimensional gauged maximal supergravity with gauged trombone symmetry. We write an explicit generalised Christoffel symbol for E$_{3(3)}$ EFT and show that the equations of motion of F-theory, namely the vanishing of a 4 dimensional Ricci tensor with two of its dimensions fibered, can be obtained from a generalised Ricci tensor and an appropriate type IIB ansatz for the metric.

A divide on an orientable 2-orbifold gives rise to a fibration of the unit tangent bundle to the orbifold.We characterize the corresponding monodromies as exactly the products of a left-veering horizontal and a right-veering vertical antitwist with respect to a cylinder decomposition, where the notion of an antitwist is an orientation-reversing analogue of a multitwist. Many divide monodromies are pseudo-Anosov and we give plenty of examples.In particular, we show that there exist divide monodromies with stretch factor arbitrarily close to one, and give an example none of whose powers can be obtained by Penner's or Thurston's construction of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes.As a side product, we also get a new combinatorial construction of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes in terms of products of antitwists.

Given a Lie algebroid we discuss the existence of a smooth abelian integration of its abelianization. We show that the obstructions are related to the extended monodromy groups introduced recently in \cite{CFMb}. We also show that this groupoid can be obtained by a path-space construction, similar to the Weinstein groupoid of \cite{CF1}, but where the underlying homotopies are now supported in surfaces with arbitrary genus. As an application, we show that the prequantization condition for a (possibly non-simply connected) manifold is equivalent to the smoothness of an abelian integration. For a projective curve $C\subset \textbf{P} ^n$ defined over a finite field $\textbf{F} _q$ we study the statistics of the $\textbf{F} _q$-structure of a section of $C$ by a random hyperplane defined over $\textbf{F} _q$ in the $q\to \infty $ limit. We obtain a very general equidistribution result for this problem. We deduce many old and new results about decomposition statistics over finite fields in this limit. Our main tool will be the calculation of the monodromy of transversal hyperplane sections of a projective curve.

We give a Lie-theoretic explanation for the convex polytope which parametrizes the globally smooth solutions of the topological-antitopological fusion equations of Toda type (tt$^*$-Toda equations) which were introduced by Cecotti and Vafa. It is known from [GL] [GIL1] [M1] [M2] that these solutions can be parametrized by monodromy data of a certain flat $SL_{n+1}\mathbb{R}$-connection. Using Boalch's Lie-theoretic description of Stokes data, and Steinberg's description of regular conjugacy classes of a linear algebraic group, we express this monodromy data as a convex subset of a Weyl alcove of $SU_{n+1}$., Comment: 27 pages

A. Girand has constructed an explicit two-parameter family of flat connections over the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. These connections have dihedral monodromy and their polar locus is a prescribed quintic composed of a conic and three tangent lines. In this paper, we give a generalization of this construction. That is, we construct an explicit $n$-parameter family of flat connections over the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. In this paper, we study the actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets which arise from representations of Galois groups of certain fields of rational functions. Such representations are associated to polynomials, and they are called profinite iterated monodromy groups. We are interested in a topological invariant of such actions called the asymptotic discriminant. In particular, we give a complete classification by whether the asymptotic discriminant is stable or wild in the case when the polynomial generating the representation is quadratic. We first develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group [Formula: see text] in characteristic [Formula: see text]. Certain of their Kummer pullbacks extend to irreducible local systems on the affine line in characteristic [Formula: see text]. One of these, of rank [Formula: see text] in characteristic [Formula: see text], turns out to have the Conway group [Formula: see text], in its irreducible orthogonal representation of degree [Formula: see text], as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups.

Mirror symmetry for a toric variety involves Laurent polynomials whose symplectic topology is related to the algebraic geometry of the toric variety. We show that there is a monodromy action on the monomially admissible Fukaya-Seidel categories of these Laurent polynomials as the arguments of their coefficients vary that corresponds under homological mirror symmetry to tensoring by a line bundle naturally associated to the monomials whose coefficients are rotated. The problem of two fixed centers was introduced by Euler as early as in 1760. It plays an important role both in celestial mechanics and in the microscopic world. In the present paper we study the spatial problem in the case of arbitrary (both positive and negative) strengths of the centers. Combining techniques from scattering theory and Liouville integrability, we show that this spatial problem has topologically non-trivial scattering dynamics, which we identify as scattering monodromy. The approach that we introduce in this paper applies more generally to scattering systems that are integrable in the Liouville sense.

We study monodromy of holomorphic motions and show the equivalence of triviality of monodromy of holomorphic motions and extensions of holomorphic motions to continuous motions of the Riemann sphere. We also study liftings of holomorphic maps into certain Teichm\"uller spaces. We use this "lifting property" to prove that, under the condition of trivial monodromy, any holomorphic motion of a closed set in the Riemann sphere, over a hyperbolic Riemann surface, can be extended to a holomorphic motion of the sphere, over the same parameter space. In this work, we study minimal equicontinuous actions which are locally quasi-analytic. The first main result shows that for minimal equicontinuous actions which are locally quasi-analytic, continuous orbit equivalence of the actions implies return equivalence. This generalizes results of Cortez and Medynets, and of Li. The second main result is that if G is a finitely-generated, virtually nilpotent group, then every minimal equicontinuous action by G is locally quasi-analytic. As an application, we show that the homeomorphism type of a nil-solenoid is determined by the virtual topological full group of its monodromy action., Comment: Some text edits and updated references

The Riemann-Hilbert approach to studying solutions of supergravity theories allows us to associate spacetime independent monodromy matrices (matrices in the Geroch group) with solutions that effectively only depend on two spacetime coordinates. This offers insights into symmetries of supergravity theories, and in the classification of their solutions. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of monodromy matrices for multi-center solutions of five-dimensional U(1)$^3$ supergravity. We obtain monodromy matrices for a class of collinear Bena-Warner bubbling geometries. We show that for this class of solutions, monodromy matrices in the vector representation of SO(4,4) have only simple poles with residues of rank two and nilpotency degree two. These properties strongly suggest that an inverse scattering construction along the lines of [arXiv:1311.7018 [hep-th]] can be given for this class of solutions, though it is not attempted in this work. We prove a criterion for determining whether the normalization of a complex analytic space on which the constant sheaf is perverse is a rational homology manifold, using a perverse sheaf known as the multiple-point complex. This perverse sheaf is naturally associated to any "parameterized space", and has several interesting connections with the Milnor monodromy and mixed Hodge Modules.

Fix a degree $d$ projective curve $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $U \subset (\mathbb{P}^r)^*$ be a dense open subvariety such that every hyperplane $H \in U$ intersects $X$ in $d$ smooth points. Varying $H \in U$ produces the monodromy action $\varphi: \pi_1^{\text{\'et}}(U) \to S_d$. Let $G_X := \mathrm{im}(\varphi)$. The permutation group $G_X$ is called the sectional monodromy group of $X$. In characteristic zero $G_X$ is always the full symmetric group, but sectional monodromy groups in characteristic $p$ can be smaller. For a large class of space curves ($r \geqslant 3$) we classify all possibilities for the sectional monodromy group $G$ as well as the curves with $G_X=G$. We apply similar methods to study a particular family of rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^2$, which enables us to answer an old question about Galois groups of generic trinomials., Comment: to appear in Journal of the London Mathematical Society

For any finite set $M\subset {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 1}$ of positive integers, there is up to isomorphism a unique ${\mathbb Z}$-lattice $H_M$ with a cyclic automorphism $h_M:H_M\to H_M$ whose eigenvalues are the unit roots with orders in $M$ and have multiplicity 1. The paper studies the automorphisms of the pair $(H_M,h_M)$ which have eigenvalues in $S^1$. The main result are necessary and sufficient conditions on the set $M$ such that the only such automorphisms are $\pm h_M^k,k\in{\mathbb Z}$. The proof uses resultants and cyclotomic polynomials. It is elementary, but involved.
