We study supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary eccentricity of equal-mass galaxy mergers in $N$-body simulations with the KETJU code, which combines the GADGET-4 fast multipole gravity solver with accurate regularized integration and Post-Newtonian corrections around SMBHs. In simulations with realistic, high eccentricity galactic merger orbits, the binary eccentricity is found to be a non-linear function of the deflection angle in the SMBH orbit during the final, nearly radial close encounter between the SMBHs before they form a bound binary. This mapping between the deflection angle and the binary eccentricity has no apparent resolution dependence in our simulations spanning the resolution range of $1\times10^5 - 8\times10^6$ particles per galaxy. The mapping is also captured using a simple model with an analytic potential, indicating that it is driven by the interplay between a smooth asymmetric stellar background potential and dynamical friction acting on the SMBHs. Due to the non-linearity of this mapping, in certain merger configurations small, parsec-scale variations in the merger orbit can result in binary eccentricities varying in nearly the full possible range between $e=0$ and $e=1$. In idealized simulations, such variations are caused by finite resolution effects, and convergence of the binary eccentricity can be achieved with increasing resolution. However, in real galaxies, other mechanisms such as nuclear gas and substructure that perturb the merger orbit are likely to be significant enough for the binary eccentricity to be effectively random. We present the new public version of the KETJU supermassive black hole (SMBH) dynamics module, as implemented into GADGET-4. KETJU adds a small region around each SMBH where the dynamics of the SMBHs and stellar particles are integrated using an algorithmically regularised integrator instead of the leapfrog integrator with gravitational softening used by GADGET-4. This enables modelling SMBHs as point particles even during close interactions with stellar particles or other SMBHs, effectively removing the spatial resolution limitation caused by gravitational softening. KETJU also includes post-Newtonian corrections, which allows following the dynamics of SMBH binaries to sub-parsec scales and down to tens of Schwarzschild radii. Systems with multiple SMBHs are also supported, with the code also including the leading non-linear cross terms that appear in the post-Newtonian equations for such systems. We present tests of the code showing that it correctly captures, at sufficient mass resolution, the sinking driven by dynamical friction and binary hardening driven by stellar scattering. We also present an example application demonstrating how the code can be applied to study the dynamics of SMBHs in mergers of multiple galaxies and the effect they have on the properties of the surrounding galaxy. We expect that the presented KETJU SMBH dynamics module can also be straightforwardly incorporated into other codes similar to GADGET-4, which would allow coupling small-scale SMBH dynamics to the rich variety of galactic physics models that exist in the literature., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures. We compare ionised gas and stellar kinematics of 16 star-forming galaxies ($\log(M_\star/M_\odot)=9.7-11.2$, SFR=6-86 $M_\odot/yr$) at $z\sim1$ using near-infrared integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of H$\alpha$ emission from the KMOS$^{\rm 3D}$ survey and optical slit spectroscopy of stellar absorption and gas emission from the LEGA-C survey. H$\alpha$ is dynamically colder than stars, with higher disc rotation velocities (by ~45 per cent) and lower disc velocity dispersions (by a factor ~2). This is similar to trends observed in the local Universe. We find higher rotational support for H$\alpha$ relative to [OII], potentially explaining systematic offsets in kinematic scaling relations found in the literature. Regarding dynamical mass measurements, for six galaxies with cumulative mass profiles from Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) models the H$\alpha$ dynamical mass models agree remarkably well out to ~10 kpc for all but one galaxy (average $\Delta M_{\rm dyn}(R_{e,\rm F814W}), Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; submitted to MNRAS; comments are welcome

We present [CII] synthetic observations of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of a dwarf galaxy merger. The merging process varies the star-formation rate by more than three orders of magnitude. Several star clusters are formed, the feedback of which disperses and unbinds the dense gas through expanding HII regions and supernova (SN) explosions. For galaxies with properties similar to the modelled ones, we find that the [CII] emission remains optically thin throughout the merging process. We identify the Warm Neutral Medium ($32\chi_{\rm H2}$) to be the primary source of [CII] emission ($\sim58\%$ contribution), although at stages when the HII regions are young and dense (during star cluster formation or SNe in the form of ionized bubbles) they can contribute $\gtrsim50\%$ to the total [CII] emission. We find that the [CII]/FIR ratio decreases due to thermal saturation of the [CII] emission caused by strong FUV radiation fields emitted by the massive star clusters, leading to a [CII]-deficit medium. We investigate the [CII]-SFR relation and find an approximately linear correlation which agrees well with observations, particularly those from the Dwarf Galaxy Survey. Our simulation reproduces the observed trends of [CII]/FIR versus $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm FIR}$, and it agrees well with the Kennicutt relation of SFR-FIR luminosity. We present an analysis of the origin and properties of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) in a suite of 11 cosmological zoom simulations resembling present day spiral galaxies. On average the galaxies retain about 50\% of the cosmic fraction in baryons, almost equally divided into disc (interstellar medium) gas, cool CGM gas and warm-hot CGM gas. At radii smaller than 50 kpc the CGM is dominated by recycled warm-hot gas injected from the central galaxy, while at larger radii it is dominated by cool gas accreted onto the halo. The recycled gas typically accounts for one-third of the CGM mass. We introduce the novel publicly available analysis tool \textsc{pygad} to compute ion abundances and mock absorption spectra. For Lyman-$��$ absorption we find good agreement of the simulated equivalent width (EW) distribution and observations out to large radii. Disc galaxies with quiescent assembly histories show significantly more absorption along the disc major axis. By comparing the EW and HI column densities we find that CGM Lyman-$��$ absorbers are best represented by an effective line-width $b\approx 50 - 70$ km s$^{-1}$ that increases mildly with halo mass, larger than typically assumed., 18 pages, 20 figures

We present constraints on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) with the empirical model EMERGE. The parameters of this model are adjusted so that it reproduces the evolution of stellar mass functions, specific star formation rates, and cosmic star formation rates since $z\approx10$ as well as 'quenched' galaxy fractions and correlation functions. We find that at fixed halo mass present-day ETGs are more massive than late-type galaxies, whereas at fixed stellar mass ETGs populate more massive halos in agreement with lensing results. This effect naturally results from the shape and scatter of the stellar-to-halo mass relation and the galaxy formation histories. The ETG stellar mass assembly is dominated by 'in-situ' star formation below a stellar mass of $3\times10^{11}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and by merging and accretion of 'ex-situ' formed stars at higher mass. The mass dependence is in tension with current cosmological simulations. Lower mass ETGs show extended star formation towards low redshift in agreement with recent estimates from IFU surveys. All ETGs have main progenitors on the 'main sequence of star formation' with the 'red sequence' appearing at $z \approx 2$. Above this redshift, over 95 per cent of the ETG progenitors are star-forming. More than 90 per cent of $z \approx 2$ 'main sequence' galaxies with $m_* > 10^{10}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ evolve into present-day ETGs. Above redshift 6, more than 80 per cent of the observed stellar mass functions above $10^{9}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ can be accounted for by ETG progenitors with $m_* > 10^{10}\mathrm{M}_\odot$. This implies that current and future high redshift observations mainly probe the birth of present-day ETGs. We present three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations showing the effect of kinetic and radiative AGN feedback on a model galaxy representing a massive quiescent low-redshift early-type galaxy of $M_* = 8.41\times 10^{10} M_\odot$, harbouring a $M_\mathrm{BH} = 4\times 10^8 M_\odot $ black hole surrounded by a cooling gaseous halo. We show that, for a total baryon fraction of $\sim 20\%$ of the cosmological value, feedback from the AGN can keep the galaxy quiescent for about 4.35 Gyr and with properties consistent with black hole mass and X-ray luminosity scaling relations. However, this can only be achieved if the AGN feedback model includes both kinetic and radiative feedback modes. The simulation with only kinetic feedback fails to keep the model galaxy fully quiescent, while one with only radiative feedback leads to excessive black-hole growth. For higher baryon fractions (e.g. 50\% of the cosmological value), the X-ray luminosities exceed observed values by at least one order of magnitude, and rapid cooling results in a star-forming galaxy. The AGN plays a major role in keeping the circumgalactic gas at observed metallicities of $Z/Z_\odot \gtrsim 0.3 $ within the central $\sim 30$ kpc by venting nuclear gas enriched with metals from residual star formation activity. As indicated by previous cosmological simulations, our results are consistent with a model for which the black hole mass and the total baryon fraction are set at higher redshifts $z > 1$ and the AGN alone can keep the model galaxy on observed scaling relations. We report on empirical trends between the dynamically determined stellar initial mass function (IMF) and stellar population properties for a complete, volume-limited sample of 260 early-type galaxies from the Atlas3D project. We study trends between our dynamically-derived IMF normalisation and absorption line strengths, and interpret these via single stellar population- (SSP-) equivalent ages, abundance ratios (measured as [alpha/Fe]), and total metallicity, [Z/H]. We find that old and alpha-enhanced galaxies tend to have on average heavier (Salpeter-like) mass normalisation of the IMF, but stellar population does not appear to be a good predictor of the IMF, with a large range of normalisation at a given population parameter. As a result, we find weak IMF-[alpha/Fe] and IMF-age correlations, and no significant IMF-[Z/H] correlation. We revisit collisionless major and minor mergers of spheroidal galaxies in the context of the size evolution of elliptical galaxies. The simulations are performed as a series of mergers with mass-ratios of 1:1 and 1:10 for models representing pure bulges as well as bulges embedded in dark matter halos. For major and minor mergers, respectively, we identify and analyze two different processes, violent relaxation and stripping, leading to size evolution and a change of the dark matter fraction within the observable effective radius. Violent relaxation - which is the dominant mixing process for major mergers but less important for minor mergers - scatters relatively more dark matter particles than bulge particles to small. Stripping in minor mergers assembles stellar satellite particles at large radii in halo dominated regions of the massive host. This strongly increases the size of the bulge into regions with higher dark matter fractions leaving the inner host structure almost unchanged. A factor of two mass increase by minor mergers increases the dark matter fraction by 20 per cent. We present analytic corrections to simple one-component virial estimates for the evolution of the gravitational radii. If such a two-component system grows by minor mergers alone its size growth, $r_{\mathrm{e}} \propto M^\alpha$, reaches values of $\alpha \approx 2.4$, significantly exceeding the simple theoretical limit of $\alpha = 2$. For major mergers the sizes grow with $\alpha \lesssim 1$. Our results indicate that minor mergers of galaxies embedded in massive dark matter halos provide a potential mechanism for explaining the rapid size growth and the build-up of massive elliptical systems predicting significant dark matter fractions and radially biased velocity dispersions at large radii (abbreviated), Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the growth of black holes (BHs) in galaxies using three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations with new implementations of the momentum mechanical feedback, and restriction of accreted elements to those that are gravitationally bound to the BH. We also include the feedback from the X-ray radiation emitted by the BH, which heats the surrounding gas in the host galaxies, and adds radial momentum to the fluid. We perform simulations of isolated galaxies and merging galaxies and test various feedback models with the new treatment of the Bondi radius criterion. We find that overall the BH growth is similar to what has been obtained by earlier workers using the Springel, Di Matteo, & Hernquist algorithms. However, the outflowing wind velocities and mechanical energy emitted by winds are considerably higher (v_w ~ 1000-3000 km/s) compared to the standard thermal feedback model (v_w ~ 50-100 km/s). While the thermal feedback model emits only 0.1 % of BH released energy in winds, the momentum feedback model emits more than 30 % of the total energy released by the BH in winds. In the momentum feedback model, the degree of fluctuation in both radiant and wind output is considerably larger than in the standard treatments. Observational studies have revealed a "downsizing" trend in black hole (BH) growth: the number densities of luminous AGN peak at higher redshifts than those of faint AGN. This would seem to imply that massive black holes formed before low mass black holes, in apparent contradiction to hierarchical clustering scenarios. We investigate whether this observed "downsizing" in BH growth is reproduced in a semi-analytic model for the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes, set within the hierarchical paradigm for structure formation (Somerville et al. 2008; S08). In this model, black holes evolve from light seeds (\sim100M\odot) and their growth is merger-driven. The original S08 model (baseline model) reproduces the number density of AGN at intermediate redshifts and luminosities, but underproduces luminous AGN at very high redshift (z > 3) and overproduces them at low redshift (z < 1). In addition, the baseline model underproduces low-luminosity AGN at low redshift (z < 1). To solve these problems we consider several modifications to the physical processes in the model: (1) a 'heavy' black hole seeding scenario (2) a sub-Eddington accretion rate ceiling that depends on the cold gas fraction, and (3) an additional black hole accretion mode due to disk instabilities. With these three modifications, the models can explain the observed downsizing, successfully reproduce the bolometric AGN luminosity function and simultaneously reproduce galaxy and black hole properties in the local Universe. We also perform a comparison with the observed soft and hard X-ray luminosity functions of AGN, including an empirical correction for torus-level obscuration, and reach similar conclusions. Hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) have typically employed feedback that is purely local: i.e., an injection of energy to the immediate neighborhood of the black hole. We perform GADGET-2 simulations of massive elliptical galaxies with an additional feedback component: an observationally calibrated X-ray radiation field which emanates from the black hole and heats gas out to large radii from the galaxy center. We find that including the heating and radiation pressure associated with this X-ray flux in our simulations enhances the effects which are commonly reported from AGN feedback. This new feedback model is twice as effective as traditional feedback at suppressing star formation, produces 3 times less star formation in the last 6 Gyr, and modestly lowers the final BH mass (30%). [Abridged] We use the ATLAS3D sample of 260 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to study the apparent kinematic misalignment angle, Psi, defined as the angle between the photometric and kinematic major axis. We find that 71% of nearby ETGs are strictly aligned systems (Psi > 5 deg), an additional 14% have 5 < Psi < 10 deg and 90% of galaxies have Psi < 15 deg. Taking into account measurement uncertainties, 90% of galaxies can be considered aligned to better than 5 deg, suggesting that only a small fraction of early-type galaxies (~10%) are not consistent with axisymmetry within the projected half-light radius. We identify morphological features such as bars and rings (30%), dust structures (16%), blue nuclear colours (6%) and evidence of interactions (8%). We use kinemetry to analyse the mean velocity maps and separate galaxies in two broad types of regular and non-regular rotators. We find 82% of regular rotators and 17% non-regular rotators, with 2 galaxies that we were not able to classify due to data quality. The non-regular rotators are typically found in dense regions and are massive. The majority of galaxies do not have any specific kinemetric features, but we highlight here the frequency of the kinematically distinct cores (7%) and the aligned double peaks in the velocity dispersion maps (4%). Most of the galaxies that are misaligned have complex kinematics and are non-regular rotators. While the trends are weak, there is a tendency that large values of Psi are found in galaxies at intermediate environmental densities and among the most massive galaxies in the sample. We suggest that the most common formation mechanism for ETGs preserves the axisymmetry of the disk progenitors. We propose a simple model for the origin of fast and slow rotator early-type galaxies (ETG) within the hierarchical $��$CDM scenario, that is based on the assumption that the mass fraction of stellar discs in ETGs is a proxy for the specific angular momentum expressed via $��_R$. Within our model we reproduce the fraction of fast and slow rotators as a function of magnitude in the \atl survey, assuming that fast rotating ETGs have at least 10% of their total stellar mass in a disc component. In agreement with \atl observations we find that slow rotators are predominantly galaxies with $ M_* > 10^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ contributing $\sim 20%$ to the overall ETG population. We show in detail that the growth histories of fast and slow rotators are different, supporting the classification of ETGs into these two categories. Slow rotators accrete between $\sim 50% -90%$ of their stellar mass from satellites and their most massive progenitors have on average up to 3 major mergers during their evolution. Fast rotators in contrast, accrete less than 50% and have on average less than one major merger in their past. We find that the underlying physical reason for the different growth histories is the slowing down and ultimately complete shut-down of gas cooling in massive galaxies. Once cooling and associated star formation in disc stops, galaxies grow via infall from satellites. Frequent minor mergers thereby, destroy existing stellar discs via violent relaxation and also tend to lower the specific angular momentum of the main stellar body, lowering $��_R$ into the slow rotator regime. We use two-dimensional kinematic maps of simulated binary disc mergers to investigate the $��_R$-parameter, which is a luminosity weighted measure of projected angular momentum per unit mass. This parameter was introduced to subdivide the SAURON sample of early type galaxies in so called fast $��_R > 0.1$ and slow rotators $��_R < 0.1$. Tests on merger remnants reveal that $��_R$ is a robust indicator of the true angular momentum content in elliptical galaxies. We find the same range of $��_R$ values in our merger remnants as in the SAURON galaxies. The merger mass ratio is decisive in creating a slow or a fast rotator in a single binary merger, the former being created mostly in an equal mass merger. Slow rotators have a $��_R$ which does not vary with projection. The confusion rate with face-on fast rotators is very small. Merger with low gas fractions form slow rotators with smaller ellipticities and are in much better agreement with the SAURON slow rotators. Remergers of merger remnants are slow rotators but tend to have too high ellipticities. Fast rotators maintain the angular momentum content from the progenitor disc galaxy if merger mass ratio is high. We present a two-dimensional kinematic analysis for a sample of simulated binary disc merger remnants with mass ratios 1:1 and 3:1. For the progenitor discs we used pure stellar models as well as models with 10% of their mass in gas. A multitude of phenomena also observed in real galaxies are found in the simulations. These include misaligned rotation, embedded discs, gas rings, counter-rotating cores and kinematic misaligned discs. Using the 2D maps we illustrate projection effects and the change in properties of a merger remnant when gas is included in the merger. We find that kinematic peculiar subsystems are preferably formed in equal mass mergers. Equal-mass collisionless remnants can show almost no rotation, regular rotation or strong kinematic misalignment. The inclusion of gas makes the remnants appear more round(1:1) and axisymmetric(3:1). Counter-Rotating Cores (CRCs) are almost exclusively formed in equal-mass mergers with a dissipational component. 3:1 remnants show a much more regular structure. We quantify these properties by applying the kinemetric methods recently developed by Krajnovi\'c et al. We present a detailed surface density analysis of a large sample of simulated collisionless mergers of disc galaxies with bulges (mass ratios 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 6:1) and without bulges (mass ratios 1:1 and 3:1). They were classified, according to their bulge--to--total ($B/T$) ratio, either as a one-component system or as a two-component systems. In general projection effects change the classification of a remnant. Only merger remnants of discs with bulges show properties similar to observed early--type galaxies. The formation of elliptical galaxies as a result of the merging of spiral galaxies is discussed. We analyse a large set of numerical N-Body merger simulations which show that major mergers can in principle explain the observed isophotal fine structure of ellipticals and its correlation with kinematical properties. Equal-mass mergers lead to boxy, slowly rotating systems, unequal-mass mergers produce fast rotating and disky ellipticals. However, several problems remain. Anisotropic equal mass mergers appear disky under certain projections which is not observed. The intrinsic ellipticities of remnants are often larger than observed. Finally, although unequal-mass mergers produce fast rotating ellipticals, the remnants are in general more anisotropic than expected from observations. Additional processes seem to play an important role which are not included in dissipationless mergers. We present the results of a series of gas dynamical cosmological simulations of the formation of individual massive field galaxies in the standard concordance \LCDM and in a \LWDM cosmology. The galaxies form in an initial burst of star formation followed by accretion of small satellites. The simulated galaxies are old ($\approx$ 10 $Gyrs$) hot stellar systems with masses of $\approx 1.7 \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$. Baryonic matter dominates the mass in the luminous part of the galaxies up to $\approx 5$ effective radii. The \LCDM galaxy is a slowly rotating spheroidal stellar system (E2) with predominantly disky isophotes. The line-of-sight velocity distributions deviate from Gaussian shape and $h_3$ is anticorrelated with $v_{los}$. The corresponding \LWDM galaxy is more elongated (E3 - E4) and rotates faster. The anisotropy parameter $(v/\sigma)^*$ is close to unity. Within the uncertainties of $M/L$ both galaxies follow the Fundamental Plane. We conclude that the properties of the two galaxies simulated in the \LCDM and \LWDM cosmology are in good agreement with observations of intermediate mass elliptical or S0 galaxies (abstract abbreviated)., Comment: 19 pages and 23 figures, submitted to MNRAS

High-resolution numerical simulations of galaxy mergers are analysed. The global structure and isophotal shapes of the merger remnants are in good agreement with the observations. Whereas equal-mass mergers lead to anisotropic, boxy ellipticals, unequal-mass mergers result in disky and isotropic systems. The line-of-sight velocity distributions show small deviations from a Gaussian distribution. In all cases we find that the retrograde wings are steeper and that the prograde wings are broader than a Gaussian distribution. This is in contradiction with the observations which show broader retrograde and steeper prograde wings in all ellipticals.
