We present a method of selection of 24~$��$m galaxies from the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep Field down to $150 \mbox{ }��$Jy and measurements of their two-point correlation function. We aim to associate various 24 $��$m selected galaxy populations with present day galaxies and to investigate the impact of their environment on the direction of their subsequent evolution. We discuss using of Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm applied to infrared photometric data to perform star-galaxy separation, in which we achieve an accuracy higher than 80\%. The photometric redshift information, obtained through the CIGALE code, is used to explore the redshift dependence of the correlation function parameter ($r_{0}$) as well as the linear bias evolution. This parameter relates galaxy distribution to the one of the underlying dark matter. We connect the investigated sources to their potential local descendants through a simplified model of the clustering evolution without interactions. We observe two different populations of star-forming galaxies, at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$, $z_{med}\sim 0.9$. Measurements of total infrared luminosities ($L_{TIR}$) show that the sample at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$ is composed mostly of local star-forming galaxies, while the sample at $z_{med}\sim0.9$ is composed of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with $L_{TIR}\sim 10^{11.62}L_{\odot}$. We find that dark halo mass is not necessarily correlated with the $L_{TIR}$: for subsamples with $L_{TIR}= 10^{11.15} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim 0.7$ we observe a higher clustering length ($r_{0}=6.21\pm0.78$ $[h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}]$) than for a subsample with mean $L_{TIR}=10^{11.84} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim1.1$ ($r_{0}=5.86\pm0.69$ $h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$). We find that galaxies at $z_{med}\sim 0.9$ can be ancestors of present day $L_{*}$ early type galaxies, which exhibit a very high $r_{0}\sim 8$~$h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$., 13 pages, 8 figures

We present herein galaxy number counts of the nine bands in the 2-24 micron range on the basis of the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) surveys. The number counts are derived from NEP-deep and NEP-wide surveys, which cover areas of 0.5 and 5.8 deg2, respectively. To produce reliable number counts, the sources were extracted from recently updated images. Completeness and difference between observed and intrinsic magnitudes were corrected by Monte Carlo simulation. Stellar counts were subtracted by using the stellar fraction estimated from optical data. The resultant source counts are given down to the 80% completeness limit; 0.18, 0.16, 0.10, 0.05, 0.06, 0.10, 0.15, 0.16, and 0.44 mJy in the 2.4, 3.2, 4.1, 7, 9, 11, 15, 18 and 24 um bands, respectively. On the bright side of all bands, the count distribution is flat, consistent with the Euclidean Universe, while on the faint side, the counts deviate, suggesting that the galaxy population of the distant universe is evolving. These results are generally consistent with previous galaxy counts in similar wavebands. We also compare our counts with evolutionary models and find them in good agreements. By integrating the models down to the 80% completeness limits, we calculate that the AKARI NEP-survey revolves 20%-50% of the cosmic infrared background, depending on the wavebands., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

As part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey we have investigated the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) properties of a sample of more than 4800 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field. Most LBGs are not detected individually, but we do detect a sub-sample of 12 objects at 0.7 < z < 1.6 and one object at z ~ 2.0. The ones detected by Herschel SPIRE have redder observed NUV-U and U-R colors than the others, while the undetected ones have colors consistent with average LBGs at z > 2.5. The UV-to-FIR spectral energy distributions of the objects detected in the rest-frame FIR are investigated using the code CIGALE to estimate physical parameters. We find that LBGs detected by SPIRE are high mass, luminous infrared galaxies. It appears that LBGs are located in a triangle-shaped region in the A_FUV vs. Log L_FUV diagram limited by A_FUV=0 at the bottom and by a diagonal following the temporal evolution of the most massive galaxies from the bottom-right to the top-left of the diagram. This upper envelop can be used as upper limits for the UV dust attenuation as a function of L_FUV}. The limits of this region are well explained using a closed-box model, where the chemical evolution of galaxies produces metals, which in turn lead to higher dust attenuation when the galaxies age., ApJ Letter in press

We present the results of a gravitational lensing analysis of the bright $\zs=2.957$ sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG), HERMES J105751.1+573027 found in {\it Herschel}/SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase data from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) project. The high resolution imaging available in optical and Near-IR channels, along with CO emission obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, allow us to precisely estimate the intrinsic source extension and hence estimate the total lensing magnification to be $\mu=10.9\pm 0.7$. We measure the half-light radius $R_{\rm eff}$ of the source in the rest-frame Near-UV and $V$ bands that characterize the unobscured light coming from stars and find $R_{\rm eff,*}= [2.0 \pm 0.1]$ kpc, in good agreement with recent studies on the Submillimeter Galaxy population. This lens model is also used to estimate the size of the gas distribution ($R_{\rm eff,gas}= [1.1\pm0.5]$) kpc by mapping back in the source plane the CO (J=5-4) transition line emission. The lens modeling yields a relatively large Einstein radius $R_{\rm Ein}= 4\farcs10 \pm 0\farcs02$, corresponding to a deflector velocity dispersion of [$483\pm 16] \,\kms$. This shows that HERMES J105751.1+573027 is lensed by a {\it galaxy group-size} dark matter halo at redshift $\zl\sim 0.6$. We present first results of a study of the submillimetre (rest frame far-infrared) properties of z~3 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and their lower-redshift counterparts BX/BM galaxies, based on Herschel-SPIRE observations of the Northern field of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS-N). We use stacking analysis to determine the properties of LBGs well below the current limit of the survey. Although LBGs are not detected individually, stacking the infrared luminous LBGs (those detected with Spitzer at 24 microns yields a statistically significant submm detection with mean flux = 5.9+/-1.4 mJy confirming the power of SPIRE in detecting UV-selected high-redshift galaxies at submillimetre wavelengths. In comparison, the Spitzer 24 microns detected BX/BM galaxies appear fainter with a stacked value of = 2.7 +/-0.8 mJy. By fitting the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) we derive median infrared luminosities, L_{IR}, of 2.8x10^{12} Lsun and 1.5x10^{11} Lsun for z~3 LBGs and BX/BMs, respectively. We find that $L_{IR} estimates derived from present measurements are in good agreement with those based on UV data for z~2 BX/BM galaxies, unlike the case for z~3 infrared luminous LBGs where the UV underestimates the true $L_{IR}. Although sample selection effects may influence this result we suggest that differences in physical properties (such as morphologies, dust distribution and extent of star-forming regions) between z ~3 LBGs and z~2 BX/BMs may also play a significant role., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS HERSCHEL issue

We present an initial analysis of AKARI 18um-selected galaxies using all 9 photometric bands at 2-24um available in the InfraRed Camera (IRC), in order to demonstrate new capabilities of AKARI cosmological surveys. We detected 72 sources at 18um in an area of 50.2 arcmin^2 in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). From this sample, 25 galaxies with probable redshifts z>~ 0.5 are selected with a single colour cut (N2-N3>0.1) for a detailed SED analysis with ground-based BVRi'z'JK data. Using an SED radiative transfer model of starbursts covering the wavelength range UV -- submm, we derive photometric redshifts from the optical-MIR SEDs of 18um-selected galaxies. From the best-fit SED models, we show that the IRC all-band photometry is capable of tracing the steep rise in flux at the blue side of the PAH 6.2um emission feature. This indicates that the IRC all-band photometry is useful to constrain the redshift of infrared galaxies, specifically for dusty galaxies with a less prominent 4000A break. Also, we find that the flux dip between the PAH 7.7 and 11.2um emission feature is recognizable in the observed SEDs of galaxies at z~1. By using such a colour anomaly due to the PAH and silicate absorption features, unique samples of ULIRGs at z~1, `silicate-break' galaxies, can be constructed from large cosmological surveys of AKARI towards the NEP, i.e. the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide survey. This pilot study suggests the possibility of detecting many interesting galaxy properties in the NEP-Deep and Wide surveys, such as a systematic difference in SEDs between high- and low-z ULIRGs, and a large variation of the PAH inter-band strength ratio in galaxies at high redshifts. We present a photometric selection method for ULIRGs in the redshift range of z=1 -- 2. We utilize the most prominent spectral feature of ULIRGs, i.e. the silicate absorption feature at 9.7 micron and an optimized filter system at mid-infrared wavelengths. These `silicate-break' galaxies could be selected by using colour anomalies owing to the silicate absorption feature around 9.7(1+z) micron. Such filter systems are available on the Spitzer Space Telescope but we suggest that the most promising selection criteria would be given with mid-infrared bands of ASTRO-F satellite due to a more comprehensive set of filter bands than that of Spitzer. We study the selection method of silicate-break galaxies with the SED model of both starbursts and quiescent star-forming galaxies, and then verify the method by using the observed spectra of nearby galaxies. We would expect that about 1000 candidates of silicate-break galaxies could be detected per square degree in current and future mid-infrared surveys. The silicate-break selection criteria will break the degeneracy between various galaxy evolution models for extragalactic source counts and place strong limits on the star formation activity at z=1 -- 2. Applying our silicate-break technique to initial Spitzer results we have tentatively identified the first candidate silicate-break galaxy at z=1.6., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. We present submillimetre continuum observations of a sample of some of the highest redshift quasars currently known, made with the SCUBA bolometer array on the JCMT. The median redshift of the sample is 5.3. Two z>5 objects are strong (6 sigma) detections, with S(850um)>10mJy. A firm (5 sigma) detection is obtained for the z=5.7 quasar SDSS J1044-0125; and SDSS J1306+0356, at z=6.0, is detected with a signal-to-noise approx. 4. For the remainder of the sample we have obtained sensitive (sigma=1.5mJy) upper limits. Submm spectral indices measured for two of the sources are consistent with thermal reradiation from dust, rather than from synchrotron emission. We present basic observational strategies for ASTRO-F (also known as the Imaging Infra Red Surveyor (IRIS)) to be launched in 2004 by the Japanese Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). We examine 2 survey scenarios, a deep ~1sq.deg. survey reaching sensitivities an order of magnitude below than the deepest surveys performed by ISO in the mid-IR, and a shallow \~18sq.deg mid-infrared (7-25um in 6 bands) covering an area greater than the entire area covered by all ISO mid-IR surveys. Using 2 cosmological models the number of galaxies predicted for each survey is calculated. The first model uses an enhancement of the pure luminosity evolution model of Pearson & Rowan-Robinson while the new models incorporate a strongly evolving ULIG component. For the deep survey, between 20,000-30,000 galaxies should be detected in the shortest wavebands and ~5000 in the longest (25um) band.
