We showcase applications of nonlinear algebra in the sciences and engineering. Our review is organized into eight themes: polynomial optimization, partial differential equations, algebraic statistics, integrable systems, configuration spaces of frameworks, biochemical reaction networks, algebraic vision, and tensor decompositions. Conversely, developments on these topics inspire new questions and algorithms for algebraic geometry.

Tobasco et al. [Physics Letters A, 382:382-386, 2018; see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physleta.2017.12.023] recently suggested that trajectories of ODE systems that optimize the infinite-time average of a certain observable can be localized using sublevel sets of a function that arise when bounding such averages using so-called auxiliary functions. In this paper we demonstrate that this idea is viable and allows for the computation of extremal unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) for polynomial ODE systems. First, we prove that polynomial optimization is guaranteed to produce auxiliary functions that yield near-sharp bounds on time averages, which is required in order to localize the extremal orbit accurately. Second, we show that points inside the relevant sublevel sets can be computed efficiently through direct nonlinear optimization. Such points provide good initial conditions for UPO computations. As a proof of concept, we then combine these methods with a single-shooting Newton-Raphson algorithm to study extremal UPOs for a nine-dimensional model of sinusoidally forced shear flow. We discover three previously unknown families of UPOs, one of which simultaneously minimizes the mean energy dissipation rate and maximizes the mean perturbation energy relative to the laminar state for Reynolds numbers approximately between 81.24 and 125., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. v3: update discussion after Theorem 1, fixed typos

We compare four key hierarchies for solving Constrained Polynomial Optimization Problems (CPOP): Sum of Squares (SOS), Sum of Diagonally Dominant Polynomials (SDSOS), Sum of Nonnegative Circuits (SONC), and the Sherali Adams (SA) hierarchies. We prove a collection of dependencies among these hierarchies both for general CPOPs and for optimization problems on the Boolean hypercube. Key results include for the general case that the SONC and SOS hierarchy are polynomially incomparable, while SDSOS is contained in SONC. A direct consequence is the non-existence of a Putinar-like Positivstellensatz for SDSOS. On the Boolean hypercube, we show as a main result that Schm\"udgen-like versions of the hierarchies SDSOS*, SONC*, and SA* are polynomially equivalent. Moreover, we show that SA* is contained in any Schm\"udgen-like hierarchy that provides a O(n) degree bound., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we study the polynomial optimization problem of multi-forms over the intersection of the multi-spheres and the nonnegative orthants. This class of problems is NP-hard in general, and includes the problem of finding the best nonnegative rank-one approximation of a given tensor. A Positivstellensatz is given for this class of polynomial optimization problems, based on which a globally convergent hierarchy of doubly nonnegative (DNN) relaxations is proposed. A (zero-th order) DNN relaxation method is applied to solve these problems, resulting in linear matrix optimization problems under both the positive semidefinite and nonnegative conic constraints. A worst case approximation bound is given for this relaxation method. Then, the recent solver SDPNAL+ is adopted to solve this class of matrix optimization problems. Typically, the DNN relaxations are tight, and hence the best nonnegative rank-one approximation of a tensor can be revealed frequently. In this paper we study feasibility and infeasibility of nonlinear two-stage fully adjustable robust feasibility problems with an empty first stage. This is equivalent to deciding whether the uncertainty set is contained within the projection of the feasible region onto the uncertainty-space. Moreover, the considered sets are assumed to be described by polynomials. For answering this question, two very general approaches using methods from polynomial optimization are presented---one for showing feasibility and one for showing infeasibility. The developed methods are approximated through sum of squares (SOS) polynomials and solved using semidefinite programs. Deciding robust feasibility and infeasibility is important for gas network operations, which is a nonconvex feasibility problem where the feasible set is described by a composition of polynomials with the absolute value function. Concerning the gas network problem, different topologies are considered. It is shown that a tree structured network can be decided exactly using linear programming. Furthermore, a method is presented to reduce a tree network with one additional arc to a single cycle network. In this case, the problem can be decided by eliminating the absolute value functions and solving the resulting linearly many polynomial optimization problems. Lastly, the effectivity of the methods is tested on a variety of small cyclic networks. It turns out that for instances where robust feasibility or infeasibility can be decided successfully, level 2 or level 3 of the Lasserre relaxation hierarchy typically is sufficient.

We present methods for bounding infinite-time averages in dynamical systems governed by nonlinear PDEs. The methods rely on auxiliary functionals, which are similar to Lyapunov functionals but satisfy different inequalities. The inequalities are enforced by requiring certain expressions to be sums of squares of polynomials, and the optimal choice of auxiliary functional is posed as a semidefinite program (SDP) that can be solved computationally. To formulate these SDPs we approximate the PDE by truncated systems of ODEs and proceed in one of two ways. The first approach is to compute bounds for the ODE systems, increasing the truncation order until bounds converge numerically. The second approach incorporates the ODE systems with analytical estimates on their deviation from the PDE, thereby using finite truncations to produce bounds for the full PDE. We apply both methods to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, where we compute upper bounds on the spatiotemporal average of energy by employing polynomial auxiliary functionals up to degree six. The first approach is used for most computations, but a subset of results are checked using the second approach, and the results agree to high precision. These bounds apply to all odd solutions of period $2\pi L$, where $L$ is varied. Sharp bounds are obtained for $L\le10$, and trends suggest that more expensive computations would yield sharp bounds at larger $L$ also. The bounds are known to be sharp (to within 0.1% numerical error) because they are saturated by the simplest nonzero steady states, which apparently have the largest mean energy among all odd solutions. Prior authors have conjectured that mean energy remains $O(1)$ for $L\gg1$ since no particular solutions with larger energy have been found. In recent years, optimization theory has been greatly impacted by the advent of sum of squares (SOS) optimization. The reliance of this technique on large-scale semidefinite programs however, has limited the scale of problems to which it can be applied. In this paper, we introduce DSOS and SDSOS optimization as linear programming and second-order cone programming-based alternatives to sum of squares optimization that allow one to trade off computation time with solution quality. These are optimization problems over certain subsets of sum of squares polynomials (or equivalently subsets of positive semidefinite matrices), which can be of interest in general applications of semidefinite programming where scalability is a limitation. We show that some basic theorems from SOS optimization which rely on results from real algebraic geometry are still valid for DSOS and SDSOS optimization. Furthermore, we show with numerical experiments from diverse application areas---polynomial optimization, statistics and machine learning, derivative pricing, and control theory---that with reasonable tradeoffs in accuracy, we can handle problems at scales that are currently significantly beyond the reach of traditional sum of squares approaches. Finally, we provide a review of recent techniques that bridge the gap between our DSOS/SDSOS approach and the SOS approach at the expense of additional running time. The Supplementary Material of the paper introduces an accompanying MATLAB package for DSOS and SDSOS optimization.

We consider the problem of approximating the reachable set of a discrete-time polynomial system from a semialgebraic set of initial conditions under general semialgebraic set constraints. Assuming inclusion in a given simple set like a box or an ellipsoid, we provide a method to compute certified outer approximations of the reachable set. The proposed method consists of building a hierarchy of relaxations for an infinite-dimensional moment problem. Under certain assumptions, the optimal value of this problem is the volume of the reachable set and the optimum solution is the restriction of the Lebesgue measure on this set. Then, one can outer approximate the reachable set as closely as desired with a hierarchy of super level sets of increasing degree polynomials. For each fixed degree, finding the coefficients of the polynomial boils down to computing the optimal solution of a convex semidefinite program. When the degree of the polynomial approximation tends to infinity, we provide strong convergence guarantees of the super level sets to the reachable set. In this paper, we consider the second-order cone tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem (SOCTEiCP) and present three different reformulations to the model under consideration. Specifically, for the general SOCTEiCP, we first show its equivalence to a particular variational inequality under reasonable conditions. A notable benefit is that such a reformulation possibly provides an efficient way for the study of properties of the problem. Then, for the symmetric and sub-symmetric SOCTEiCPs, we reformulate them as appropriate nonlinear programming problems, which are extremely beneficial for designing reliable solvers to find solutions of the considered problem. Finally, we report some preliminary numerical results to verify our theoretical results., Comment: 21 pages

In this article we combine two developments in polynomial optimization. On the one hand, we consider nonnegativity certificates based on sums of nonnegative circuit polynomials, which were recently introduced by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we investigate geometric programming methods for constrained polynomial optimization problems, which were recently developed by Ghasemi and Marshall. We show that the combination of both results yields a new method to solve certain classes of constrained polynomial optimization problems. It is known that point searching in basic semialgebraic sets and the search for globally minimal points in polynomial optimization tasks can be carried out using (sd) O(n) arithmetic operations, where n and s are the numbers of variables and constraints and d is the maximal degree of the polynomials involved. Subject to certain conditions, we associate to each of these problems an intrinsic system degree which becomes in worst case of order (nd) O(n) and which measures the intrinsic complexity of the task under consideration. International audience; We first show that a continuous function f is nonnegative on a closed set $K\subseteq R^n$ if and only if (countably many) moment matrices of some signed measure $d\nu =fd\mu$ with support equal to K, are all positive semidefinite (if $K$ is compact $\mu$ is an arbitrary finite Borel measure with support equal to K. In particular, we obtain a convergent explicit hierarchy of semidefinite (outer) approximations with {\it no} lifting, of the cone of nonnegative polynomials of degree at most $d$. Wen used in polynomial optimization on certain simple closed sets $\K$ (like e.g., the whole space $\R^n$, the positive orthant, a box, a simplex, or the vertices of the hypercube), it provides a nonincreasing sequence of upper bounds which converges to the global minimum by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite programs with only one variable. This convergent sequence of upper bounds complements the convergent sequence of lower bounds obtained by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations.

We study the ideal generated by polynomials vanishing on a semialgebraic set and propose an algorithm to calculate the generators, which is based on some techniques of the cylindrical algebraic decomposition. By applying these, polynomial optimization problems with polynomial equality constraints can be modified equivalently so that the associated semidefinite programming relaxation problems have no duality gap. Applied to simplices this characterization allows to reduce the computation of an outer radius to a computation in the circumscribing case or to the computation of an outer radius of a lower-dimensional simplex. In the second part of the paper, we use this characterization to determine the sequence of outer (n – 1)-radii of regular simplices (which are the radii of smallest enclosing cylinders). This settles a question which arose from an error in a paper by Weißbach (1983). In the proof, we first reduce the problem to a constrained optimization problem of symmetric polynomials and then to an optimization problem in a fixed number of variables with additional integer constraints.
