For the first time both H$��$ and far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations from an HI-selected sample are used to determine the dust-corrected star formation rate density (SFRD: $\dot��$) in the local Universe. Applying the two star formation rate indicators on 294 local galaxies we determine log($\dot��$$ _{H��}) = -1.68~^{+0.13}_{-0.05}$ [M$_{\odot} $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$ and log($\dot��_{FUV}$) $ = -1.71~^{+0.12}_{-0.13}$ [M$_\odot $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$. These values are derived from scaling H$��$ and FUV observations to the HI mass function. Galaxies were selected to uniformly sample the full HI mass (M$_{HI}$) range of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (M$_{HI} \sim10^{7}$ to $\sim10^{10.7}$ M$_{\odot}$). The approach leads to relatively larger sampling of dwarf galaxies compared to optically-selected surveys. The low HI mass, low luminosity and low surface brightness galaxy populations have, on average, lower H$��$/FUV flux ratios than the remaining galaxy populations, consistent with the earlier results of Meurer. The near-identical H$��$- and FUV-derived SFRD values arise with the low H$��$/FUV flux ratios of some galaxies being offset by enhanced H$��$ from the brightest and high mass galaxy populations. Our findings confirm the necessity to fully sample the HI mass range for a complete census of local star formation to include lower stellar mass galaxies which dominate the local Universe., 17 pages, 7 figures

Evidence for gas accretion onto galaxies can be found throughout the universe. In this chapter, I summarize the direct and indirect signatures of this process and discuss the primary sources. The evidence for gas accretion includes the star formation rates and metallicities of galaxies, the evolution of the cold gas content of the universe with time, numerous indirect indicators for individual galaxies, and a few direct detections of inflow. The primary sources of gas accretion are the intergalactic medium, satellite gas and feedback material. We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Significant numbers of high-velocity HI clouds (HVCs) have now been detected in H-alpha, with a subset seen in low ionization lines (e.g. [NII]). It was originally hoped that the observed H-alpha strength would provide a distance constraint to individual clouds. This idea requires that a useful fraction (f_esc > 1%) of ionizing photons escape the Galaxy, and that the halo ionizing field is relatively smooth, as we discuss. Most HVCs which are known to be close to the Sun are H-alpha; the brightest clouds also show enhanced [NII] emission, in contrast to the Magellanic Stream where the low ionization emission lines are always weak compared to H-alpha. But an acute complication for H-alpha distances is the apparent H-alpha brightness of the Magellanic Stream along several sight lines. To account for this, we present three possible configurations for the Magellanic Stream and propose a follow-up experiment. If we normalize the distances to local HVCs, some HVCs appear to be scattered throughout the Galactic halo on scales of tens of kiloparsecs., 14 pages, 6 figures; delayed submission due to embargo on HIPASS map. We present an analysis of high-resolution HI data of one of the cores of HVC187 Wakker & van Woerden 1991), HVC287+22+240. Structure is present down to the lowest-measurable scale (~1 arcmin) and several concentrations appear to be unresolved. Most of the cores seen at low resolution break up into smaller subcores at higher resolution. The typical volume density and pressure are estimated to be ~30/R/D(kpc) cm^{-3} and ~18000/R/D(kpc) K cm^{-3}, respectively, where R is the resolution in arcmin and D(kpc) the unknown distance in kpc., 5 pages; LaTeX; to be published in: Proceedings of the 3rd Stromlo Symposium, eds. The first results from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) provide a spectacular view of the global HI distribution in the vicinity of the Magellanic Clouds and the southern Milky Way. A 2400 square degree mosaic around the South Celestial Pole (SCP) reveals the existence of a narrow, continuous counter-stream which 'leads' the direction of motion of the Clouds, i.e. opposite in direction to the Stream. This strongly supports the gravitational model for the Stream in which the leading and trailing streams are tidally torn from the body of the Magellanic Clouds. We report the serendipitous detection of an H$_{2}$-bearing damped Lyman-$��$ absorber at z = 0.576 in the spectrum of the QSO J0111-0316 in the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey. Spectroscopic observations from HST-COS in the far-ultraviolet reveal a damped absorber with log[N(HI)/cm^-2] = 20.1 +/- 0.2 and log[N(H$_{2}$)/cm^-2] = 18.97 (-0.06, +0.05). The diffuse molecular gas is found in two velocity components separated by dv = 60 km/s, with >99.9% of the total H$_{2}$ column density concentrated in one component. At a metallicity of $\approx$ 50% of solar, there is evidence for Fe enhancement and dust depletion, with a dust-to-gas ratio $��_{\text{O}} \approx$ 0.4. A galaxy redshift survey conducted with IMACS and LDSS-3C on Magellan reveals an overdensity of nine galaxies at projected distance d, 19 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

The recently initiated Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey aims to map 7000 square degrees of the high galactic latitude sky visible from Arecibo, providing a HI line spectral database covering the redshift range between -1600 km/s and 18,000 km/s with 5 km/s resolution. Exploiting Arecibo's large collecting area and small beam size, ALFALFA is specifically designed to probe the faint end of the HI mass function in the local universe and will provide a census of HI in the surveyed sky area to faint flux limits, making it especially useful in synergy with wide area surveys conducted at other wavelengths. ALFALFA will also provide the basis for studies of the dynamics of galaxies within the Local and nearby superclusters, will allow measurement of the HI diameter function, and enable a first wide-area blind search for local HI tidal features, HI absorbers at z < 0.06 and OH megamasers in the redshift range 0.16 < z < 0.25. Although completion of the survey will require some five years, public access to the ALFALFA data and data products will be provided in a timely manner, thus allowing its application for studies beyond those targeted by the ALFALFA collaboration. ALFALFA adopts a two-pass, minimum intrusion, drift scan observing technique which samples the same region of sky at two separate epochs to aid in the discrimination of cosmic signals from noise and terrestrial interference. Survey simulations, which take into account large scale structure in the mass distribution and incorporate experience with the ALFA system gained from tests conducted during its commissioning phase, suggest that ALFALFA will detect on the order of 20,000 extragalactic HI line sources out to z=0.06, including several hundred with HI masses of less than 10^{7.5} msun., 37 pages, including 11 figures; to appear in Astron.
