Two landmark results in combinatorial random matrix theory, due to Koml\'os and Costello-Tao-Vu, show that discrete random matrices and symmetric discrete random matrices are typically nonsingular. In particular, in the language of graph theory, when $p$ is a fixed constant, the biadjacency matrix of a random Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi bipartite graph $\mathbb{G}(n,n,p)$ and the adjacency matrix of an Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi random graph $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$ are both nonsingular with high probability. However, very sparse random graphs (i.e., where $p$ is allowed to decay rapidly with $n$) are typically singular, due to the presence of "local" dependencies such as isolated vertices and pairs of degree-1 vertices with the same neighbour. In this paper we give a combinatorial description of the rank of a sparse random graph $\mathbb{G}(n,n,c/n)$ or $\mathbb{G}(n,c/n)$ in terms of such local dependencies, for all constants $c\ne e$ (and we present some evidence that the situation is very different for $c=e$). This gives an essentially complete answer to a question raised by Vu at the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians. As applications of our main theorem and its proof, we also determine the asymptotic singularity probability of the 2-core of a sparse random graph, we show that the rank of a sparse random graph is extremely well-approximated by its matching number, and we deduce a central limit theorem for the rank of $\mathbb{G}(n,c/n)$.

We prove that with high probability $\mathbb{G}^{(3)}(n,n^{-1+o(1)})$ contains a spanning Steiner triple system for $n\equiv 1,3\pmod{6}$, establishing the exponent for the threshold probability for existence of a Steiner triple system. We also prove the analogous theorem for Latin squares. An $n$-vertex graph is called $C$-Ramsey if it has no clique or independent set of size $C\log_2 n$ (i.e., if it has near-optimal Ramsey behavior). In this paper, we study edge-statistics in Ramsey graphs, in particular obtaining very precise control of the distribution of the number of edges in a random vertex subset of a $C$-Ramsey graph. This brings together two ongoing lines of research: the study of "random-like" properties of Ramsey graphs and the study of small-ball probabilities for low-degree polynomials of independent random variables. The proof proceeds via an "additive structure" dichotomy on the degree sequence, and involves a wide range of different tools from Fourier analysis, random matrix theory, the theory of Boolean functions, probabilistic combinatorics, and low-rank approximation. One of the consequences of our result is the resolution of an old conjecture of Erdős and McKay, for which Erdős offered one of his notorious monetary prizes.

We prove the existence of subspace designs with any given parameters, provided that the dimension of the underlying space is sufficiently large in terms of the other parameters of the design and satisfies the obvious necessary divisibility conditions. Consider $n=\ell+m$ individuals, where $\ell\le m$, with $\ell$ individuals holding an opinion $A$ and $m$ holding an opinion $B$. Suppose that the individuals communicate via an undirected network $G$, and in each time step, each individual updates her opinion according to a majority rule (that is, according to the opinion of the majority of the individuals she can communicate with in the network). This simple and well studied process is known as "majority dynamics in social networks". Here we consider the case where $G$ is a random network, sampled from the binomial model $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$, where $(\log n)^{-1/16}\le p\le 1-(\log n)^{-1/16}$. We show that for $n=\ell+m$ with $\Delta=m-\ell\le(\log n)^{1/4}$, the above process terminates whp after three steps when a consensus is reached. Furthermore, we calculate the (asymptotically) correct probability for opinion $B$ to "win" and show it is \[\Phi\bigg(\frac{p\Delta\sqrt{2}}{\sqrt{\pi p(1-p)}}\bigg) + O(n^{-c}),\] where $\Phi$ is the Gaussian CDF. This answers two conjectures of Tran and Vu and also a question raised by Berkowitz and Devlin. In this work, we analyze dimension reduction algorithms based on the Kac walk and discrete variants. (1) For $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, we design an optimal Johnson-Lindenstrauss (JL) transform based on the Kac walk which can be applied to any vector in time $O(d\log{d})$ for essentially the same restriction on $n$ as in the best-known transforms due to Ailon and Liberty [SODA, 2008], and Bamberger and Krahmer [arXiv, 2017]. Our algorithm is memory-optimal, and outperforms existing algorithms in regimes when $n$ is sufficiently large and the distortion parameter is sufficiently small. In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Ailon and Chazelle [STOC, 2006] in a stronger form. (2) The same construction gives a simple transform with optimal Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) which can be applied in time $O(d\log{d})$ for essentially the same range of sparsity as in the best-known such transform due to Ailon and Rauhut [Discrete Comput. Geom., 2014]. (3) We show that by fixing the angle in the Kac walk to be $\pi/4$ throughout, one obtains optimal JL and RIP transforms with almost the same running time, thereby confirming -- up to a $\log\log{d}$ factor -- a conjecture of Avron, Maymounkov, and Toledo [SIAM J. We present a randomized algorithm which takes as input an undirected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $��$, and a number of colors $k \geq (8/3 + o_��(1))��$, and returns -- in expected time $\tilde{O}(n��^{2}\log{k})$ -- a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ distributed perfectly uniformly on the set of all proper $k$-colorings of $G$. Notably, our sampler breaks the barrier at $k = 3��$ encountered in recent work of Bhandari and Chakraborty [STOC 2020]. We also sketch how to modify our methods to relax the restriction on $k$ to $k \geq (8/3 - ��_0)��$ for an absolute constant $��_0 > 0$. As in the work of Bhandari and Chakraborty, and the pioneering work of Huber [STOC 1998], our sampler is based on Coupling from the Past [Propp&Wilson, Random Struct. Algorithms, 1995] and the bounding chain method [Huber, STOC 1998; H��ggstr��m&Nelander, Scand. J. Statist., 1999]. Our innovations include a novel bounding chain routine inspired by Jerrum's analysis of the Glauber dynamics [Random Struct. Algorithms, 1995], as well as a preconditioning routine for bounding chains which uses the algorithmic Lov��sz Local Lemma [Moser&Tardos, J.ACM, 2010]., 21 pages; comments welcome!

Bollob��s and Riordan, in their paper "Metrics for sparse graphs," proposed a number of provocative conjectures extending central results of quasirandom graphs and graph limits to sparse graphs. We refute these conjectures by exhibiting a sequence of graphs with convergent normalized subgraph densities (and pseudorandom $C_4$-counts), but with no limit expressible as a kernel.

We introduce a generalization of classical $q$-ary codes by allowing points to cover other points that are Hamming distance $1$ or $2$ in a freely chosen subset of all directions. More specifically, we generalize the notion of $1$-covering, $1$-packing, and $2$-packing in the case of $q$-ary codes. In the covering case, we establish the analog of the sphere-packing bound and in the packing case, we establish an analog of the singleton bound. Given these analogs, in the covering case we establish that the sphere-packing bound is asymptotically never tight except in trivial cases. This is in essence an analog of a seminal result of Rodemich regarding $q$-ary codes. In the packing case we establish for the $1$-packing and $2$-packing cases that the analog of the singleton bound is tight in several possible cases and conjecture that these bounds are optimal in general.
