Abstract

Euclid is an ESA mission designed to constrain the properties of dark energy and gravity via weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. It will carry out a wide area imaging and spectroscopy survey (EWS) in visible and near-infrared, covering roughly 15,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky on six years. The wide-field telescope and instruments are optimized for pristine PSF and reduced straylight, producing very crisp images. This paper presents the building of the Euclid reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, Deep fields, Auxiliary fields for calibrations, and spacecraft movements followed by Euclid as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulate the dither pattern at pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We use up-to-date models for the sky background to define the Euclid region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage are also considered. Via purposely-built software optimized to prioritize best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability, we generate a schedule for the Auxiliary and Deep fields observations and schedule the RoI with EWS transit observations. The resulting reference survey RSD_2021A fulfills all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. Its wide survey covers 14,500 square degrees. The limiting AB magnitudes ($5\sigma$ point-like source) achieved in its footprint are estimated to be 26.2 (visible) and 24.5 (near-infrared); for spectroscopy, the H$_\alpha$ line flux limit is $2\times 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 1600 nm; and for diffuse emission the surface brightness limits are 29.8 (visible) and 28.4 (near-infrared) mag arcsec$^{-2}$., Comment: 43 pages, 51 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract

This white paper is the result of the Tri-Agency Working Group (TAG) appointed to develop synergies between missions and is intended to clarify what LSST observations are needed in order to maximally enhance the combined science output of LSST and Euclid. To facilitate LSST planning we provide a range of possible LSST surveys with clear metrics based on the improvement in the Dark Energy figure of merit (FOM). To provide a quantifiable metric we present five survey options using only between 0.3 and 3.8% of the LSST 10 year survey. We also provide information so that the LSST DDF cadence can possibly be matched to those of \emph{Euclid} in common deep fields, SXDS, COSMOS, CDFS, and a proposed new LSST deep field (near the Akari Deep Field South). Co-coordination of observations from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and Euclid will lead to a significant number of synergies. The combination of optical multi-band imaging from LSST with high resolution optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy from \emph{Euclid} will not only improve constraints on Dark Energy, but provide a wealth of science on the Milky Way, local group, local large scale structure, and even on first galaxies during the epoch of reionization. A detailed paper has been published on the Dark Energy science case (Rhodes et al.) by a joint LSST/Euclid working group as well as a white paper describing LSST/Euclid/WFIRST synergies (Jain et al.), and we will briefly describe other science cases here. Abstract

For more than two decades we have known that galaxy morphological segregation is present in the Local Universe. It is important to see how this relation evolves with cosmic time. To investigate how galaxy assembly took place with cosmic time, we explore the evolution of the morphology-density relation up to redshift z~1 using about 10000 galaxies drawn from the zCOSMOS Galaxy Redshift Survey. Taking advantage of accurate HST/ACS morphologies from the COSMOS survey, of the well-characterised zCOSMOS 3D environment, and of a large sample of galaxies with spectroscopic redshift, we want to study here the evolution of the morphology-density relation up to z~1 and its dependence on galaxy luminosity and stellar mass. The multi-wavelength coverage of the field also allows a first study of the galaxy morphological segregation dependence on colour. We further attempt to disentangle between processes that occurred early in the history of the Universe or late in the life of galaxies. The zCOSMOS field benefits of high-resolution imaging in the F814W filter from the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS). We use standard morphology classifiers, optimised for being robust against band-shifting and surface brightness dimming, and a new, objective, and automated method to convert morphological parameters into early, spiral, and irregular types. We use about 10000 galaxies down to I_AB=22.5 with a spectroscopic sampling rate of 33% to characterise the environment of galaxies up to z~1 from the 100 kpc scales of galaxy groups up to the 100 Mpc scales of the cosmic web. Abstract

We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey, and the final data release of 35016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectroscopic redshifts up to redshift z~6.7, in areas 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5x10^6 to 2x10^7h^-3Mpc^3. We have selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching i_{AB}=24.75. Spectra have been obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT, integrating 0.75h, 4.5h and 18h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys. A total of 1263 galaxies have been re-observed independently within the VVDS, and from the VIPERS and MASSIV surveys. They are used to establish the redshift measurements reliability, to assess completeness, and to provide a weighting scheme taking into account the survey selection function. We describe the main properties of the VVDS samples, and the VVDS is compared to other spectroscopic surveys. In total we have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34594 galaxies, 422 type-I AGN, and 12430 Galactic stars. The survey has enabled to identify galaxies up to very high redshifts with 4669 redshifts in 13, and specific populations like LAE have been identified out to z=6.62. We show that the VVDS occupies a unique place in the parameter space defined by area, depth, redshift coverage, and number of spectra. The VVDS provides a comprehensive survey of the distant universe, covering all epochs since z, or more than 12 Gyr of cosmic time, with a uniform selection, the largest such sample to date. A wealth of science results derived from the VVDS have shed new light on the evolution of galaxies and AGN, and their distribution in space, over this large cosmic time. Abstract

We model the evolution of the mean galaxy occupation of dark-matter halos over the range $0.1 0.1 M_0$ merger event occuring between redshifts of 0.5 and 1.0. Futhermore, we find that more luminous galaxies are found to occupy more massive halos irrespectively of the redshift. Finally, the average number of galaxies per halo shows little increase from redshift z$\sim$ 1.0 to z$\sim$ 0.5, with a sharp increase by a factor $\sim$3 from z$\sim$ 0.5 to z$\sim$ 0.1, likely due to the dynamical friction of subhalos within their host halos., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. Abstract

We investigate how the shape of the galaxy two-point correlation function as measured in the zCOSMOS survey depends on local environment, quantified in terms of the density contrast on scales of 5 Mpc/h. We show that the flat shape previously observed at redshifts between z=0.6 and z=1 can be explained by this volume being simply 10% over-abundant in high-density environments, with respect to a Universal density probability distribution function. When galaxies corresponding to the top 10% tail of the distribution are excluded, the measured w_p(r_p) steepens and becomes indistinguishable from LCDM predictions on all scales. This is the same effect recognised by Abbas & Sheth in the SDSS data at z~0 and explained as a natural consequence of halo-environment correlations in a hierarchical scenario. Galaxies living in high-density regions trace dark matter halos with typically higher masses, which are more correlated. If the density probability distribution function of the sample is particularly rich in high-density regions because of the variance introduced by its finite size, this produces a distorted two-point correlation function. Abstract

Hierarchical models of galaxy formation predict that the properties of a dark matter halo depend on the large-scale environment surrounding the halo. As a result of this correlation, we expect massive haloes to be present in larger number in overdense regions than in underdense ones. Given that a correlation exists between a galaxy stellar mass and the hosting dark matter halo mass, the segregation in dark matter halo mass should then result in a segregation in the distribution of stellar mass in the galaxy population. In this work we study the distribution of galaxy stellar mass and rest-frame optical color as a function of the large-scale galaxy distribution using the VLT VIMOS Deep Survey sample, in order to verify the presence of segregation in the properties of the galaxy population. We use the VVDS redshift measurements and multi-band photometric data to derive estimates of the stellar mass, rest-frame optical color, and of the large-scale galaxy density, on a scale of approximately 8 Mpc, for a sample of 5619 galaxies in the redshift range 0.20.7. However, when we consider only galaxies in narrow bins of stellar mass, in order to exclude the effects of the stellar mass segregation on the galaxy properties, we do not observe any more any significant color segregation., 7 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

The VVDS-Wide survey has been designed with the general aim of tracing the large-scale distribution of galaxies at z~1 on comoving scales reaching ~100Mpc/h, while providing a good control of cosmic variance over areas as large as a few square degrees. This is achieved by measuring redshifts with VIMOS at the ESO VLT to a limiting magnitude I_AB=22.5, targeting four independent fields with size up to 4 sq.deg. each. The whole survey covers 8.6 sq.deg., here we present the general properties of the current redshift sample. This includes 32734 spectra in the four regions (19977 galaxies, 304 type I AGNs, and 9913 stars), covering a total area of 6.1 sq.deg, with a sampling rate of 22 to 24%. The redshift success rate is above 90% independently of magnitude. It is the currently largest area coverage among redshift surveys reaching z~1. We give the mean N(z) distribution averaged over 6.1 sq.deg. Comparing galaxy densities from the four fields shows that in a redshift bin Deltaz=0.1 at z~1 one still has factor-of-two variations over areas as large as ~0.25 sq.deg. This level of cosmic variance agrees with that obtained by integrating the galaxy two-point correlation function estimated from the F22 field alone, and is also in fairly good statistical agreement with that predicted by the Millennium mocks. The variance estimated over the survey fields shows explicitly how clustering results from deep surveys of even ~1 sq.deg. size should be interpreted with caution. By combining the VVDS with the SWIRE data, we have built the currently largest spectroscopic sample of galaxies selected in the rest-frame near-infrared. These allow us to investigate, for the first time using spectroscopic redshifts, the clustering evolution of galaxies selected from their rest-frame near-infrared luminosity in the redshift range 0.2, 11 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

In this paper we present the optical and near-infrared identifications of the 1054 radio sources detected in the 20cm deep radio survey down to a 5sigma flux limit of about 80 microJy obtained with the VLA in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey VVDS-02h deep field. Using U,B,V,R,I and K data, we identified 718 radio sources (~74% of the whole sample). The photometric redshift analysis shows that, in each magnitude bin, the radio sample has a higher median photometric redshift than the whole optical sample, while the median (V-I) color of the radio sources is redder than the median color of the whole optical sample. These results suggest that radio detection is preferentially selecting galaxies with higher intrinsic optical luminosity. From the analysis of the optical properties of the radio sources as function of the radio flux, we found that while about 35% of the radio sources are optically unidentified in the higher radio flux bin (S> 1.0 mJy), the percentage of unidentified sources decreases to about 25% in the faintest bins (S< 0.5 mJy). The median I magnitude for the total sample of radio sources,i.e. including also the unidentified ones, is brighter in the faintest radio bins than in the bin with higher radio flux. This suggests that most of the faintest radio sources are likely to be associated to relatively lower radio luminosity objects at relatively modest redshift, rather than radio-powerful, AGN type objects at high redshift., 15 pages, 11 figs. Abstract

This paper presents the ``First Epoch'' sample from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The VVDS goals, observations, data reduction with VIPGI, and redshift measurement with KBRED are discussed. Data have been obtained with the VIsible Multi Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on the ESO-VLT UT3, allowing to observe ~600 slits simultaneously at R~230. A total of 11564 objects have been observed in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS Deep fields over a total area of 0.61deg^2, selected solely on the basis of apparent magnitude 17.5 23.5, probing the bright star forming population of galaxies. This sample provides an unprecedented dataset to study galaxy evolution over 90% of the life of the universe, 30 pages, accepted 22-Feb-05 in A&A

Abstract

We present the composite luminosity function of galaxies for 24 Abell clusters studied in our survey of the Northern Hemisphere, using DPOSS data in the framework of the CRoNaRio collaboration. Our determination of the luminosity function has been computed with very high accuracy thanks to 1) the use of homogeneous data both in the cluster and in the control field, 2) a local estimate of the background, which takes into account the presence of large-scale structures (which tipically make the background contribution larger) and of foreground clusters and groups; 3) the inclusion in the error calculation of the variance of background counts, which is tipically larger than Poissonian fluctuation. Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in an area between the two clusters of galaxies A548 and A3367, suspected to be a close and interacting pair. With the use of multifiber spectroscopy, we measured 180 new velocities of galaxies in the central part of A3367 and in the external regions of A548. The redshift histogram shows the presence of three velocity peaks, at v ~ 12000 km/s, v ~ 30000 km/s and v ~ 40000 km/s, respectively. For these we estimate the density excess, the mean velocity, and the velocity dispersion. The first clump corresponds to an elongation of A548: in particular we found a correspondence between the features of this peak and the substructures of A548. The second peak has a velocity dispersion which is typical of clusters and the distribution of its members on the plane of the sky corresponds to the highest density peak in A3367. We therefore suggest that the name A3367 has to be attributed to this clump. Our general conclusion is that, differently from expected, A548 and A3367 do not form a close pair of merging clusters, since the two structures are at significantly different redshifts. The CRONA project is a joint enterprise between Caltech and the astronomical observatory of Rome and Naples aimed to the photometric calibration of the Second Palomar Sky Survey (POSS-II) plates and to the construction of a complete photometric and astrometric catalogue of all objects present on the POSS-II. The calibrated final catalogues of objects will be made available to the community. 17. Large Scale Peculiar Velocities: Effects from Superclusters

Abstract

We study the gravitational influence of very large scale structures, as traced by clusters of galaxies, on the Local Group [LG] motion and the large scale flows. We derive from the distribution of Abell clusters within $300~$Mpc/h the overdensity field on a 3--D grid of spacing $5~$Mpc/h, then we solve the Poisson equation for the peculiar potential and finally obtain the peculiar velocity field. Quite interestingly, from this global solution we: i) recover within $\sim 10^o$ the direction of the LG motion in the Cosmic Microwave Background [CMB] frame, ii find that the Great Attractor itself moves wrt to the CMB frame, iii) derive $��_c^{-1} \equiv b_c ��_0^{-0.6} = 5.3 \pm 0.20$ from a preliminary comparison with the Mark~II catalog of peculiar velocities, iv) derive estimates for the bulk flow in spheres which fairly agree with the level derived from POTENT and the Spiral samples, v) find that the Lauer \& Postman [L\&P] bulk flow has too a large amplitude to be in agreement with our results., To appear in XXXth Moriond "Clustering in the Universe". Abstract

A complex of Halpha emitting blobs with strong FUV excess is associated to the dIrr galaxy VCC1217 / IC3418 (Hester et al. 2010), and extends up to 17 Kpc in the South-East direction. These outstanding features can be morphologically divided into diffuse filaments and compact knots, where most of the star formation activity traced by Halpha takes place. We investigate the properties of the galaxy and the blobs using a multiwavelength approach in order to constrain their origin. We collect publicly available data in UV and Halpha and observe the scene in the optical U,g,r,i bands with LBT. The photometric data allows to evaluate the star formation rate and to perform a SED fitting separately of the galaxy and the blobs in order to constrain their stellar population age. Moreover we analyze the color and luminosity profile of the galaxy and its spectrum to investigate its recent interaction with the Virgo cluster. Our analysis confirms that the most plausible mechanism for the formation of the blobs is ram pressure stripping by the Virgo cluster IGM. The galaxy colors, luminosity profile and SED are consistent with a sudden gas depletion in the last few hundred Myr. The SED fitting of the blobs constrains their ages in < 400 Myr., 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics
