In the centre of pre-stellar cores, deuterium fractionation is enhanced due to the low temperatures and high densities. Therefore, the chemistry of deuterated molecules can be used to study the earliest stages of star formation. We analyse the deuterium fractionation of simple molecules, comparing the level of deuteration in the envelopes of the pre-stellar core L1544 in Taurus and the protostellar core HH211 in Perseus. We used single-dish observations of CCH, HCN, HNC, HCO$^+$, and their $^{13}$C-, $^{18}$O- and D-bearing isotopologues, detected with the Onsala 20m telescope. We derived the column densities and the deuterium fractions of the molecules. Additionally, we used radiative transfer simulations and results from chemical modelling to reproduce the observed molecular lines. We used new collisional rate coefficients for HNC, HN$^{13}$C, DNC, and DCN that consider the hyperfine structure of these molecules. We find high levels of deuteration for CCH (10%) in both sources, consistent with other carbon chains, and moderate levels for HCN (5-7%) and HNC (8%). The deuterium fraction of HCO$^+$ is enhanced towards HH211, most likely caused by isotope-selective photodissociation of C$^{18}$O. Similar levels of deuteration show that the process is likely equally efficient towards both cores, suggesting that the protostellar envelope still retains the chemical composition of the original pre-stellar core. The fact that the two cores are embedded in different molecular clouds also suggests that environmental conditions do not have a significant effect on the deuteration within dense cores. Radiative transfer modelling shows that it is necessary to include the outer layers of the cores to consider the effects of extended structures. The outer Galaxy is an environment with metallicity lower than the Solar one. Because of this, the formation and survival of molecules in star-forming regions located in the inner and outer Galaxy is expected to be different. To gain understanding on how chemistry changes throughout the Milky Way, it is crucial to observe outer Galaxy star-forming regions to constrain models adapted for lower metallicity environments. In this paper we present a new observational project: chemical complexity in star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy (CHEMOUT). The goal is to unveil the chemical composition in 35 dense molecular clouds associated with star-forming regions of the outer Galaxy through observations obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. In this first paper, we present the sample, and report the detection at 3~mm of simple organic species HCO+, H13CO+, HCN, c-C3H2, HCO, C4H, and HCS+, of the complex hydrocarbon CH3CCH, and of SiO, CCS and SO. From c-C3H2, we estimate new kinematic heliocentric and Galactocentric distances based on an updated rotation curve of the Galaxy. The detection of the molecular tracers does not seem to have a clear dependence on the Galactocentric distance. We also analyse the HCO+ line profiles. We find high velocity wings in ~71% of the targets, and their occurrence does not depend on the Galactocentric distance. Our results, confirmed by a statistical analysis, show that the presence of organic molecules and tracers of protostellar activity is ubiquitous in the low-metallicity environment of the outer Galaxy. Based on this, and on the additional evidence that small, terrestrial planets are omnipresent in the Galaxy, we support previous claims that the definition of Galactic Habitable Zone should be rediscussed in view of the ubiquitous capacity of the interstellar medium to form organic molecules., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

Gas phase Elemental abundances in molecular CloudS (GEMS) is an IRAM 30m large program aimed at determining the elemental abundances of carbon (C), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) in a selected set of prototypical star-forming filaments. In particular, the elemental abundance of S remains uncertain by several orders of magnitude and its determination is one of the most challenging goals of this program. We have carried out an extensive chemical modeling of the fractional abundances of CO, HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, CS, SO, H$_2$S, OCS, and HCS$^+$ to determine the sulfur depletion toward the 244 positions in the GEMS database. These positions sample visual extinctions from A$_V$ $\sim$ 3 mag to $>$50 mag, molecular hydrogen densities ranging from a few 10$^3$~cm$^{-3}$ to 3$\times$10$^6$~cm$^{-3}$, and T$_k$ $\sim$ 10$-$35 K. Most of the positions in Taurus and Perseus are best fitted assuming early-time chemistry, t=0.1 Myr, $\zeta_{H_2}$$\sim$ (0.5$-$1)$\times$10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$, and [S/H]$\sim$1.5$\times$10$^{-6}$. On the contrary, most of the positions in Orion are fitted with t=1~Myr and $\zeta_{H_2}$$\sim$ 10$^{-17}$ s$^{-1}$. Moreover, $\sim$40% of the positions in Orion are best fitted assuming the undepleted sulfur abundance, [S/H]$\sim$1.5$\times$10$^{-5}$. Our results suggest that sulfur depletion depends on the environment. While the abundances of sulfur-bearing species are consistent with undepleted sulfur in Orion, a depletion factor of $\sim$20 is required to explain those observed in Taurus and Perseus. We propose that differences in the grain charge distribution in the envelopes of the studied clouds might explain these variations. Thermal ionization is a critical process at temperatures T > 10 3 K, particularly during star formation. An increase in ionization leads to a decrease in nonideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) resistivities, which has a significant impact on protoplanetary disks and protostar formation. We developed an extension of the fast computational ionization method presented in our recent paper to include thermal ionization. The model can be used to inexpensively calculate the density of ions and electrons and the electric charge of each size of grains for an arbitrary size distribution. This tool should be particularly useful for the self-consistent calculation of nonideal MHD resistivities in multidimensional simulations, especially of protostellar collapse and protoplanetary disks., Accepted in A&A. 7 pages, 6 figures

High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are produced after the first supernova event in a massive binary. These objects are intrinsically young, and can suffer from a significant natal kick. As such, the progenitors of HMXBs are likely to have formed away from the current location of the X-ray emitting systems. We aim to find the birthplace of the known HMXBs of our Milky Way. Specifically, we want to answer the question whether the formation of HMXBs can be associated to open stellar clusters and/or Galactic spiral structures, and infer from that the time elapsed since the first supernova event. We use astrometric data from the Gaia EDR3 to initialize the position and velocity of each known HMXBs from the Galaxy, and integrate their motion back in time. In parallel, we perform the same calculations on a sample of 1381 open clusters detected by Gaia as well as for four Galactic spiral arms which shape and motion have also been recently modelled using Gaia data. We report on all the encounter candidates between HMXBs and clusters or spiral arms in the past 100 Myr. In our sample of 26 HMXBs, we infer that 7 were born in clusters, 8 were born near a Galactic spiral arm, and conclude that 7 others could have formed isolated. The birthplaces of the remaining 4 HMXBs are still inconclusive due to a combination of great distance, poor astrometric data and lack of known open cluster in the vicinity. We provide the kinematical age since supernova of 15 HMXBs. The astrometry from Gaia and the orbit integration we employ are effective at finding the birthplaces of HMXBs in the Milky Way. [Context] Hot cores are signposts of the protostellar activity of dense cores in star-forming regions. W43-MM1 is a young region that is very rich in terms of high-mass star formation, which is highlighted by the presence of large numbers of high-mass cores and outflows., [Aims] We aim to systematically identify the massive cores in W43-MM1 that contain a hot core and compare their molecular composition., [Methods] We used Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) high-spatial resolution (~2500 au) data to identify line-rich protostellar cores and carried out a comparative study of their temperature and molecular composition. Here, the identification of hot cores is based on both the spatial distribution of the complex organic molecules and the contribution of molecular lines relative to the continuum intensity. We rely on the analysis of CH3CN and CH3CCH to estimate the temperatures of the selected cores. Finally, we rescale the spectra of the different hot cores based on their CH3OCHO line intensities to directly compare the detections and line intensities of the other species., [Results] W43-MM1 turns out to be a region that is rich in massive hot cores. It contains at least one less massive (core #11, 2 M⊙) and seven massive (16−100 M⊙) hot cores. The excitation temperature of CH3CN, whose emission is centred on the cores, is of the same order for all of them (120–160 K). There is a factor of up to 30 difference in the intensity of the lines of complex organic molecules (COMs). However the molecular emission of the hot cores appears to be the same or within a factor of 2–3. This suggests that these massive cores, which span about an order of magnitude in core mass, have a similar chemical composition and show similar excitation of most of the COMs. In contrast, CH3CCH emission is found to preferentially trace the envelope, with a temperature ranging from 50 K to 90 K. Lines in core #11 are less optically thick, which makes them proportionally more intense compared to the continuum than lines observed in the more massive hot cores. Core #1, the most massive hot core of W43-MM1, shows a richer line spectrum than the other cores in our sample, in particular in N-bearing molecules and ethylene glycol lines. In core #2, the emission of O-bearing molecules, such as OCS, CH3OCHO, and CH3OH, does not peak at the dust continuum core centre; the blueshifted and redshifted emission corresponds to the outflow lobes, suggesting formation via sublimation of the ice mantles through shocks or UV irradiation on the walls of the cavity. Filaments play an important role in star formation, but the formation process of filaments themselves is still unclear. The high-mass star forming clump G286.21+0.17 (G286 for short) that contains an "L" type filament was thought to undergo global collapse. Our high resolution ALMA band 3 observations resolve the gas kinematics of G286 and reveal two sub-clumps with very different velocities inside it. We find that the "blue profile" (an indicator of gas infall) of HCO+ lines in single dish observations of G286 is actually caused by gas emission from the two sub-clumps rather than gas infall. We advise great caution in interpreting gas kinematics (e.g., infall) from line profiles toward distant massive clumps in single dish observations. Energetic outflows are identified in G286 but the outflows are not strong enough to drive expansion of the two sub-clumps. The two parts of the "L" type filament ("NW-SE" and "NE-SW" filaments) show prominent velocity gradients perpendicular to their major axes, indicating that they are likely formed due to large-scale compression flows. We argue that the large-scale compression flows could be induced by the expansion of nearby giant HII regions. The "NW-SE" and "NE-SW" filaments seem to be in collision, and a large amount of gas has been accumulated in the junction region where the most massive core G286c1 forms., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

These protoplanetary disks in T Tauri stars play a central role in star and planet formation. We spatially resolve at sub-au scales the innermost regions of a sample of T Tauri's disks to better understand their morphology and composition. We extended our homogeneous data set of 27 Herbig stars and collected near-IR K-band observations of 17 T Tauri stars, spanning effective temperatures and luminosities in the ranges of ~4000-6000 K and ~0.4-10 Lsun. We focus on the continuum emission and develop semi-physical geometrical models to fit the interferometric data and search for trends between the properties of the disk and the central star. The best-fit models of the disk's inner rim correspond to wide rings. We extend the Radius-luminosity relation toward the smallest luminosities (0.4-10 Lsun) and find the R~L^(1/2) trend is no longer valid, since the K-band sizes measured with GRAVITY are larger than the predicted sizes from sublimation radius computation. No clear correlation between the K-band half-flux radius and the mass accretion rate is seen. Having magnetic truncation radii in agreement with the K-band GRAVITY sizes would require magnetic fields as strong as a few kG, which should have been detected, suggesting that accretion is not the main process governing the location of the half-flux radius of the inner dusty disk. Our measurements agree with models that take into account the scattered light. The N-to-K band size ratio may be a proxy for disentangling disks with silicate features in emission from disks with weak and/or in absorption silicate features. [Context] Jets and outflows are associated with young stellar objects across the stellar mass spectrum, from brown dwarf protostars to massive Ae/Be stars. Frequently the jet morphology is spatially discontinuous because of the temporal variability of the ejection from the driving source. Images covering a wide field of view around the jet-driving source are useful to map the large-scale jet emission and to explore the mass ejection history. [Aims] The aim of our work was to search for large-scale optical Herbig-Haro (HH) objects lying in a wide field around a sample of IRAS sources, which are candidates to trace young stellar objects. [Methods] Deep narrowband images through the Hα and [S II] emission lines, and through an off-line continuum filter, covering a wide (~15′) field around the IRAS targets were acquired. The images in the three filters were analyzed to identify shock-excited line emission (i.e., HH) in contrast to scattered line emission. [Results] New images of a sample of 15 IRAS sources, obtained in a homogeneous way are presented. HH emission was detected in six fields, and the astrometry of the knot features is given. The nature of the extended emission as scattered emission around nine of the IRAS targets is confirmed. For seven IRAS sources with unclear optical counterparts, a more plausible counterpart is proposed. A refined value of the source distance is reported for seven targets. An update of the main data available for each of the sampled fields, including images from public data archives, is also presented.

It is still poorly constrained how the densest phase of the interstellar medium varies across galactic environment. A large observing time is required to recover significant emission from dense molecular gas at high spatial resolution, and to cover a large dynamic range of extragalactic disc environments. We present new NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of a range of high critical density molecular tracers (HCN, HNC, HCO+) and CO isotopologues (13CO, C18O) towards the nearby (11.3 Mpc), strongly barred galaxy NGC 3627. These observations represent the current highest angular resolution (1.85"; 100 pc) map of dense gas tracers across a disc of a nearby spiral galaxy, which we use here to assess the properties of the dense molecular gas, and their variation as a function of galactocentric radius, molecular gas, and star formation. We find that the HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1) integrated intensity ratio does not correlate with the amount of recent star formation. Instead, the HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1) ratio depends on the galactic environment, with differences between the galaxy centre, bar, and bar end regions. The dense gas in the central 600 pc appears to produce stars less efficiently despite containing a higher fraction of dense molecular gas than the bar ends where the star formation is enhanced. In assessing the dynamics of the dense gas, we find the HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) emission lines showing multiple components towards regions in the bar ends that correspond to previously identified features in CO emission. These features are co-spatial with peaks of Halpha emission, which highlights that the complex dynamics of this bar end region could be linked to local enhancements in the star formation., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The dynamical state of massive clumps is key to our understanding of the formation of massive stars. In this work, we study the kinematic properties of massive clumps using synthetic observations. We have previously compiled a very large catalogue of synthetic dust-continuum compact sources from our 250 pc, SN-driven, star formation simulation. Here, we compute synthetic N2H+ line profiles for a subsample of those sources and compare their properties with the observations and with those of the corresponding three-dimensional (3D) clumps in the simulation. We find that the velocity dispersion of the sources estimated from the N2H+ line is a good estimate of that of the 3D clumps, although its correlation with the source size is weaker than the velocity–size correlation of the 3D clumps. The relation between the mass of the 3D clumps, Mmain, and that of the corresponding synthetic sources, MSED, has a large scatter and a slope of 0.5, Mmain∝M0.5SED⁠, due to uncertainties arising from the observational band-merging procedure and from projection effects along the line of sight. As a result, the virial parameters of the 3D clumps are not correlated with the clump masses, even if a negative correlation is found for the compact sources, and the virial parameter of the most massive sources may significantly underestimate that of the associated clumps., ZJL acknowledges financial support from China Scholarship Council (CSC) under grant no. 201606660003. Water is an important molecule in interstellar and circumstellar environments. Previous observations of mid-infrared rotational lines of OH suggest that these lines may be used to probe the photodissociation of water. In this work, cross sections for the photodissociation of H$_2$O resolving the state of the OH fragment are collected and incorporated in a new molecular excitation code called GROSBETA, which includes radiative pumping, collisional (de)excitation, and prompt emission (i.e., following the production of OH in excited states). We find that the OH rotational line intensities in the range 9-16$\mu$m, covering rotational transitions with $N_{up}=18$ to 45, are proportional to the column density of H$_2$O photodissociated per second by photons in the range 114-143nm and do not depend on other local properties. Provided an independent measurement of the column density of water is available, the strength of the local UV radiation field can be deduced with good accuracy. In contrast, the OH lines at longer far-infrared wavelengths are primarily produced by IR radiative pumping and collisions. Our model successfully reproduces the OH mid-IR lines in the $10-16\mu$m range observed by Spitzer toward the tip of the HH 211 bow-shock and shows that the jet shock irradiates its surroundings, exposing H$_2$O to a UV photon flux that is about $5 \times 10^3$ times larger than the standard interstellar radiation field. We also find that chemical pumping by the reaction H$_2$ + O may supplement the excitation of lines in the range $16-30\mu$m. The mid-infrared lines of OH constitute a powerful diagnostic for inferring the photodissociation rate of water and thus the UV field water is exposed to. Future JWST-MIRI observations will be able to map the photodestruction rate of H$_2$O in various dense and irradiated environments and provide robust estimates of the local UV radiation field., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (version before language editing)

High-quality astronomical images delivered by modern ground-based and space observatories demand adequate, reliable software for their analysis and accurate extraction of sources, filaments, and other structures, containing massive amounts of detailed information about the complex physical processes in space. The multiwavelength observations with highly variable angular resolutions across wavebands require extraction tools that preserve and use the invaluable high-resolution information. This paper presents getsf, a new method for extracting sources and filaments in astronomical images using separation of their structural components, designed to handle multiwavelength sets of images and very complex filamentary backgrounds. The method spatially decomposes the original images and separates the structural components of sources and filaments from each other and from their backgrounds, flattening their resulting images. It spatially decomposes the flattened components, combines them over wavelengths, detects the positions of sources and skeletons of filaments, and measures the detected sources and filaments. This paper presents a realistic multiwavelength set of simulated benchmark images that can serve as the standard benchmark problem to evaluate qualities of source- and filament-extraction methods. This paper describes hires, an improved algorithm for the derivation of high-resolution surface densities from the multiwavelength far-infrared Herschel images. The algorithm allows creating the surface densities with angular resolutions that reach 5.6 arcsec, when the 70 micron image is used. We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of two massive star-forming regions, N113 and N159W, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have used $\sim$1\hbox{$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$}6\,($\sim$0.4\,pc) resolution measurements of the para-H$_2$CO\,$J_{\rm K_ aK_c}$\,=\,3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$, 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$, and 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$ transitions near 218.5\,GHz to constrain RADEX non-LTE models of the physical conditions. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the para-H$_2$CO line ratios 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$/3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$ and 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$ range from 28 to 105\,K in N113 and 29 to 68\,K in N159W. Distributions of the dense gas traced by para-H$_2$CO agree with those of the 1.3\,mm dust and \emph{Spitzer}\,8.0\,$\mu$m emission, but do not significantly correlate with the H$\alpha$ emission. The high kinetic temperatures ($T_{\rm kin}$\,$\gtrsim$\,50\,K) of the dense gas traced by para-H$_2$CO appear to be correlated with the embedded infrared sources inside the clouds and/or YSOs in the N113 and N159W regions. Context.Supernova remnants (SNRs) represent a major feedback source from stars in the interstellar medium of galaxies. During the latest stage of supernova explosions, shock waves produced by the initial blast modify the chemistry of gas and dust, inject kinetic energy into the surroundings, and may alter star formation characteristics. Simultaneously,γ-ray emission is generated by the interaction between the ambient medium and cosmic rays (CRs), including those accelerated in the early stages of the explosion.Aims.We study the stellar and interstellar contents of IC443, an evolved shell-type SNR at a distance of 1.9 kpc with an estimated age of 30 kyr. We aim to measure the mass of the gas and characterize the nature of infrared point sources within the extended G region, which corresponds to the peak ofγ-ray emission detected by VERITAS andFermi.Methods.We performed 10′ × 10′ mapped observations of12CO,13COJ= 1–0,J= 2–1, andJ= 3–2 pure rotational lines, as well as C18OJ= 1–0 andJ= 2–1 obtained with the IRAM 30 m and APEX telescopes over the extent of theγ-ray peak to reveal the molecular structure of the region. We first compared our data with local thermodynamic equilibrium models. We estimated the optical depth of each line from the emission of the isotopologs13CO and C18O. We used the population diagram and large velocity gradient assumption to measure the column density, mass, and kinetic temperature of the gas using12CO and13CO lines. We used complementary data (stars, gas, and dust at multiple wavelengths) and infrared point source catalogs to search for protostar candidates.Results.Our observations reveal four molecular structures: a shocked molecular clump associated with emission lines extending between −31 and 16 km s−1, a quiescent, dark cloudlet associated with a line width of ~2 km s−1, a narrow ring-like structure associated with a line width of ~1.5 km s−1, and a shocked knot. We measured a total mass of ~230, ~90, ~210, and ~4M⊙, respectively, for the cloudlet, ring-like structure, shocked clump, and shocked knot. We measured a mass of ~1100M⊙throughout the rest of the field of observations where an ambient cloud is detected. We found 144 protostar candidates in the region.Conclusions.Our results emphasize how the mass associated with the ring-like structure and the cloudlet cannot be overlooked when quantifying the interaction of CRs with the dense local medium. Additionally, the presence of numerous possible protostars in the region might represent a fresh source of CRs, which must also be taken into account in the interpretation ofγ-ray observationsin this region.

We present the study of deuteration of cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) towards a sample of 28 high-mass star-forming cores divided into different evolutionary stages, from starless to evolved protostellar cores. We report for the first time the detection of DC$_3$N towards 15 high-mass cores. The abundance ratios of DC$_3$N with respect HC$_3$N range in the interval 0.003$-$0.022, lower than those found in low-mas protostars and dark clouds. No significant trend with the evolutionary stage, or with the kinetic temperature of the region, has been found. We compare the level of deuteration of HC$_3$N with those of other molecules towards the same sample, finding weak correlation with species formed only or predominantly in gas phase (N$_2$H$^+$ and HNC, respectively), and no correlation with species formed only or predominantly on dust grains (CH$_3$OH and NH$_3$, respectively). We also present a single-dish map of DC$_3$N towards the protocluster IRAS 05358+3543, which shows that DC$_3$N traces an extended envelope ($\sim$0.37 pc) and peaks towards two cold condensations separated from the positions of the protostars and the dust continuum. [Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. We compare dense clumps and cores in a numerical simulation of molecular clouds (MCs) undergoing global hierarchical collapse (GHC) to observations in two MCs at different evolutionary stages, the Pipe and the G14.225 clouds, to test the ability of the GHC scenario to follow the early evolution of the energy budget and star formation activity of these structures. In the simulation, we select a region that contains cores of sizes and densities similar to the Pipe cores, and find that it evolves through accretion, developing substructure similar to that of G14.225 cloud after $\sim 1.6$ Myr. Within this region, we follow the evolution of the Larson ratio $\mathcal{L} \equiv \sigma_{\rm v}/R^{1/2}$, where $\sigma_{\rm v}$ is the velocity dispersion and $R$ is the size, the virial parameter $\alpha$, and the star formation activity of the cores/clumps. In the simulation, we find that as the region evolves: $i)$ its clumps have $\mathcal{L}$ and $\alpha$ values first consistent with those of the Pipe substructures and later with those of G14.225; $ii)$ the individual cores first exhibit a decrease in $\alpha$ followed by an increase when star formation begins; $iii)$ collectively, the ensemble of cores/clumps reproduces the observed trend of lower $\alpha$ for higher-mass objects, and $iv)$ the star formation rate and star formation efficiency increase monotonically. We suggest that this evolution is due to the simultaneous loss of externally-driven compressive kinetic energy and increase of the self-gravity-driven motions. We conclude that the GHC scenario provides a realistic description of the evolution of the energy budget of the clouds' substructure at early times, which occurs simultaneously with an evolution of the star formation activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The short-lived radionuclide $^{26}$Al is widely used to determine the relative ages of chondrite components and timescales of physical and thermal events that attended the formation of the Solar System. However, an important assumption for using $^{26}$Al as a chronometer is its homogeneous distribution in the disk. Yet, the oldest components in chondrites, the Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs), which are usually considered as time anchors for this chronometer, show evidence of $^{26}$Al/$^{27}$Al variations independent of radioactive decay. Since their formation epoch may have been contemporaneous with the collapse of the parent cloud that formed the disk, this suggests that $^{26}$Al was heteregeneously distributed in the cloud. We model the collapse of such an heterogeneous cloud, using two different $^{26}$Al distributions (monotonic and non-monotonic), and follow its re-distribution in the first condensates and bulk dust that populate the forming disk. We find that CAIs inherit the $^{26}$Al/$^{27}$Al ratio of the matter infalling at the time of their formation, so that variations of $^{26}$Al/$^{27}$Al among primordial CAIs can be accounted for, independently of radioactive decay. The prevalence of a canonical ratio among them and its necessity for the differentiation of the first planetesimals suggest a (monotonic) scenario where $^{26}$Al sharply rose relatively close to the center of the protosolar cloud and essentially remained at a high level outward (rather than decreased since). As the $ ^{26}$Al abundance would be relatively homogeneous after cessation of infall, this would warrant the use of the Al-Mg chronometer from the formation of "regular" CAIs onward, to chondrules and chondrite accretion., Comment: ArXiv version

We have observed the compact HII region complex nearest to the dynamical center of the Galaxy, G-0.02-0.07, using ALMA in the H42a recombination line, CS J=2-1, H13CO+ J=1-0, and SiO v=0, J=2-1 emission lines, and 86 GHz continuum emission. The HII regions HII-A to HII-C in the cluster are clearly resolved into a shell-like feature with a bright-half and a dark-half in the recombination line and continuum emission. The absorption features in the molecular emission lines show that HII-A, B and C are located on the near side of the 50 km/s Molecular Cloud (50MC) but HII-D is located on the far side. The electron temperatures and densities range Te=5150-5920 K and ne=950-2340 cm-3, respectively. The electron temperatures on the bright-half are slightly lower than those on the dark-half, while the electron densities on the bright-half are slightly higher than those on the dark-half. The HII regions are located on the molecular filaments in the 50MC. They have already broken through the filaments and are growing in the surrounding molecular gas. There are some shocked molecular gas components around the HII regions. From line width of the H42a recombination line, the expansion velocities from HII-A to HII-D are estimated to be Vexp=16.7, 11.6, 11.1, and 12.1 km/s, respectively. The expansion timescales from HII-A to HII-D are estimated to be Tage~1.4x0^4, 1.7x10^4, 2.0x10^4, and 0.7x10^4 years, respectively. The spectral types of the central stars from HII-A to HII-D are estimated to be O8V, O9.5V, O9V, and B0V, respectively. The positional relation among the HII regions, the SiO molecule enhancement area, and Class-I maser spots suggest that the shock wave caused by a cloud-cloud collision propagated along the line from HII-C to HII-A in the 50MC. We analyze the molecular gas and dust associated with the infrared dark cloud SDC341.232-0.268 in order to investigate the characteristics and parameters of the gas, determine the evolutionary status of four embedded EGO candidates, and es- tablish possible infall or outflow gas motions. We base our study on 12CO(2-1), 13CO(2-1), and C18O(2-1) data obtained with the APEX telescope, molecular data of high density tracers from the MALT90 survey and IR images from Spitzer, Herschel and ATLASGAL. The study reveals two clumps at −44 km s−1 towards the IRDC, with densities of > 104cm−3, typical of IRDCs, while high density tracers show H2 densities > 105. FIR images reveals the presence of cold dust linked to the molecular clumps and EGOs. Analyzing the properties of dust and its evolution in the early phases of star formation is crucial to put constraints on the collapse and accretion processes as well as on the pristine properties of planet-forming seeds. We analyze PdBI observations at 1.3 and 3.2 mm for 12 Class 0 protostars obtained as part of the CALYPSO survey and derive dust emissivity index (beta) profiles as a function of the envelope radius at 200-2000 au scales. Most of the protostellar envelopes show low dust emissivity indices decreasing toward the central regions. The decreasing trend remains after correction of the (potentially optically-thick) central region emission, with surprisingly low beta (lower than 1) values across most of the envelope radii of NGC1333-IRAS4A, NGC1333-IRAS4B, SVS13B, and Serpens-SMM4. We discuss the various processes that could explain such low and varying dust emissivity indices at envelope radii 200-2000 au. Our observations of extremely low dust emissivity indices could trace the presence of large (mm-size) grains in Class 0 envelopes and a radial increase of the dust grain size toward the inner envelope regions. While it is expected that large grains in young protostellar envelopes could be built via grain growth and coagulation, we stress that the typical timescales required to build mm grains in current coagulation models are at odds with the youth of our Class 0 protostars. Additional variations in the dust composition could also partly contribute to the low beta we observe. The steepness of the beta radial gradient depends strongly on the envelope mass, which might favor a scenario where large grains are built in high density protostellar disks and transported to the intermediate envelope radii, for example with the help of outflows and winds., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Context. The deuterium fraction in low-mass prestellar cores is a good diagnostic indicator of the initial phases of star formations, and it is also a fundamental quantity to infer the ionisation degree in these objects. Aims. With the analysis of multiple transitions of $\rm N_2H^+$, $\rm N_2D^+$, $\rm HC^{18}O^+$ and $\rm DCO^+$ we are able to determine the molecular column density maps and the deuterium fraction in $\rm N_2H^+$ and $\rm HCO^+$ toward the prototypical prestellar core L1544. This is the preliminary step to derive the ionisation degree in the source. Methods. We use a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer code, combined with the molecular abundances derived from a chemical model, to infer the excitation conditions of all the observed transitions, which allows us to derive reliable maps of each molecule's column density. The ratio between the column density of a deuterated species and its non-deuterated counterpart gives the searched deuteration level. Results. The non-LTE analysis confirms that, for the analysed molecules, higher-J transitions are characterised by excitation temperatures $\approx 1-2\,$K lower than the lower-J ones. The chemical model that provides the best fit to the observational data predict the depletion of $\rm N_2H^+$ and to a lesser extent of $\rm N_2D^+$ in the innermost region. The peak values for the deuterium fraction that we find are $\mathrm{D/H_{N_2H^+}} = 0.26^{+0.15}_{-0.14}$ and $\mathrm{D/H_{HCO^+}} = 0.035^{+0.015}_{-0.012}$, in good agreement with previous estimates in the source., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A on 18/7/19

We started a multi-scale analysis of G202.3+2.5, an intertwined filamentary region of Monoceros OB1. In Paper I, we examined the distributions of dense cores and protostars and found enhanced star formation (SF) activity in the junction region of the filaments. In this second paper, we aim to unveil the connections between the core and filament evolutions, and between the filament dynamics and the global evolution of the cloud. We characterise the gas dynamics and energy balance using Herschel and WISE observations and molecular tracers observed with the IRAM 30m and TRAO 14m telescopes. The velocity field of the cloud is examined and velocity-coherent structures are put in perspective with the cloud environment. Two main velocity components (VCs) are revealed, well separated in the north and merged around the location of intense N2H+ emission where Paper I found the peak of SF activity. The relative position of the two VCs along the sightline, and the velocity gradient in N2H+ emission imply that the VCs have been undergoing collision for ~10^5 yrs. The dense gas where N2H+ is detected is interpreted as the compressed region between the two filaments, which corresponds to a high mass inflow rate of ~1e-3 Msun/yr and possibly leads to an increase in its SF efficiency. We identify a protostar in the junction region that possibly powers two crossed intermittent outflows. We show that the HII region around the nearby cluster NCG 2264 is still expanding and its role in the collision is examined. However, we cannot rule out the idea that the collision arises mostly from the global collapse of the cloud. The (sub-)filament-scale observables examined in this paper reveal a collision between G202.3+2.5 sub-structures and its probable role in feeding the cores in the junction region. We develop a new ''core field structure'' (CFS) model to predict the magnetic field strength and magnetic field fluctuation profile of dense cores using gas kinematics. We use spatially resolved observations of the nonthermal velocity dispersion from the Green Bank Ammonia survey along with column density maps from SCUBA-2 to estimate the magnetic field strength across seven dense cores located in the L1688 region of Ophiuchus. The CFS model predicts the profile of the relative field fluctuation, which is related to the observable dispersion in direction of the polarization vectors. We present radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations aimed at studying evolutionary properties of H\,{\normalsize II} regions in turbulent, magnetised, and collapsing molecular clouds formed by converging flows in the warm neutral medium. We focus on the structure, dynamics and expansion laws of these regions. Once a massive star forms in our highly structured clouds, its ionising radiation eventually stops the accretion (through filaments) toward the massive star-forming regions. The new over-pressured H\,{\normalsize II} regions push away the dense gas, thus disrupting the more massive collapse centres. Also, because of the complex density structure in the cloud, the H\,{\normalsize II} regions expand in a hybrid manner: they virtually do not expand toward the densest regions (cores), while they expand according to the classical analytical result towards the rest of the cloud, and in an accelerated way, as a blister region, towards the diffuse medium. Thus, the ionised regions grow anisotropically, and the ionising stars generally appear off-centre of the regions. Finally, we find that the hypotheses assumed in standard H\,{\normalsize II}-region expansion models (fully embedded region, blister-type, or expansion in a density gradient) apply simultaneously in different parts of our simulated H\,{\normalsize II} regions, producing a net expansion law ($R \propto t^\alpha$, with $\alpha$ in the range of 0.93-1.47 and a mean value of $1.2 \pm 0.17$) that differs from any of those of the standard models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Argon, krypton, xenon, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus have all been measured enriched by a quasi uniform factor in the 2--4 range, compared to their protosolar values, in the atmosphere of Jupiter. To elucidate the origin of these volatile enrichments, we investigate the possibility of inward drift of particles made of amorphous ice and adsorbed volatiles, and their ability to enrich in heavy elements the gas phase of the protosolar nebula once they cross the amorphous-to-crystalline ice transition zone, following the original idea formulated by Monga & Desch (2015). To do so, we use a simple accretion disk model coupled to modules depicting the radial evolution of icy particles and vapors, assuming growth, fragmentation and crystallization of amorphous grains. We show that it is possible to accrete supersolar gas from the nebula onto proto-Jupiter's core to form its envelope, and allowing it to match the observed volatile enrichments. Our calculations suggest that nebular gas with a metallicity similar to that measured in Jupiter can be accreted by its envelope if the planet formed in the $\sim$0.5--2 Myr time range and in the 0.5--20 AU distance range from the Sun, depending on the adopted viscosity parameter of the disk. Chondritic meteorites, the building blocks of terrestrial planets, are made of an out-of-equilibrium assemblage of solids formed at high and low temperatures, either in our Solar system or previous generations of stars. This was considered for decades to result from large scale transport processes in the Sun's isolated accretion disk. However, mounting evidences suggest that refractory inclusions in chondrites formed contemporaneously with the disk building. Here we numerically investigate, using a 1D model and several physical and chemical processes, the formation and transport of rocky materials during the collapse of the Sun's parent cloud and the consequent Solar Nebula assembling. The interplay between the cloud collapse, the dynamics of gas and dust, vaporization, recondensation and thermal processing of different species in the disk, results in a local mixing of solids with different thermal histories. Moreover, our results also explains the overabundance of refractory materials far from the Sun and their short formation timescales, during the first tens of kyr of the Sun, corresponding to class 0-I, opening new windows into the origin of the compositional diversity of chondrites., Comment: Received on 13/08/2018, accepted 24/10/2018. Pulsing X-ray emission tracks the plasma echo traveling in an extremely long magnetic tube that flares in an Orion Pre-Main Sequence (PMS) star. On the Sun, flares last from minutes to a few hours and the longest-lasting typically involve arcades of closed magnetic tubes. Long-lasting X-ray flares are observed in PMS stars. Large-amplitude (~20%) long-period (~3 hours) pulsations are detected in the light curve of day-long flares observed by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on-board Chandra from PMS stars in the Orion cluster. Detailed hydrodynamic modeling of two flares observed on V772 Ori and OW Ori shows that these pulsations may track the sloshing of plasma along a single long magnetic tube, triggered by a sufficiently short (~1 hour) heat pulse. Although, from a theoretical point of view, magnetic fields are believed to have a significant role during the early stages of star formation, especially during the main accretion phase, the magnetic field strength and topology is poorly constrained in the youngest accreting Class 0 protostars that lead to the formation of solar-type stars. We carried out observations of the polarized dust continuum emission with the SMA interferometer at 0.87mm, in order to probe the structure of the magnetic field in a sample of 12 low-mass Class 0 envelopes, including both single protostars and multiple systems, in nearby clouds. Our SMA observations probe the envelope emission at scales of 600-5000 au with a spatial resolution ranging from 600 to 1500 au depending on the source distance. We report the detection of linearly polarized dust continuum emission in all of our targets, with average polarization fractions ranging from 2% to 10% in these protostellar envelopes. The polarization fraction decreases with the continuum flux density, which translates into a decrease with the H2 column density within an individual envelope. Our analysis show that the envelope-scale magnetic field is preferentially observed either aligned or perpendicular to the outflow direction. Interestingly, our results suggest for the first time a relation between the orientation of the magnetic field and the rotational energy of envelopes, with a larger occurrence of misalignment in sources where strong rotational motions are detected at hundreds to thousands of au scales. We also show that the best agreement between the magnetic field and outflow orientation is found in sources showing no small-scale multiplicity and no large disks at about 100 au scales., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In the present study, the magnetic field scaling on density, $|B| \propto \rho^{\kappa}$, was revealed in a single starless core for the first time. The $\kappa$ index of $0.78 \pm 0.10$ was obtained toward the starless dense core FeSt 1-457 based on the analysis of the radial distribution of the polarization angle dispersion of background stars measured at the near-infrared wavelengths. The result prefers $\kappa = 2/3$ for the case of isotropic contraction, and the difference of the observed value from $\kappa = 1/2$ is 2.8 sigma. The distribution of the ratio of mass to magnetic flux was evaluated. FeSt 1-457 was found to be magnetically supercritical near the center ($\lambda \approx 2$), whereas nearly critical or slightly subcritical at the core boundary ($\lambda \approx 0.98$). Ambipolar-diffusion-regulated star formation models for the case of moderate magnetic field strength may explain the physical status of FeSt 1-457. The mass-to-flux ratio distribution for typical dense cores (critical Bonnor--Ebert sphere with central $\lambda=2$ and $\kappa=1/2$--$2/3$) was calculated and found to be magnetically critical/subcritical at the core edge, which indicates that typical dense cores are embedded in and evolve from magnetically critical/subcritical diffuse surrounding medium., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

The Herschel Gould Belt Survey key project mapped the bulk of nearby star-forming molecular clouds in five far-infrared bands with the aim of compiling complete census of prestellar cores and young, embedded protostars. In this paper, we present the catalogue of the dense cores and YSOs/protostars extracted from the Herschel maps of the Lupus I, III, and IV molecular clouds. The physical properties of the detected objects were derived by fitting their spectral energy distributions. A total of 532 dense cores, out of which 103 are presumably prestellar in nature, and 38 YSOs/protostars have been detected in the three clouds. Almost all the prestellar cores are associated with filaments against only about one third of the unbound cores and YSOs/protostars. Prestellar core candidates are found even in filaments that are on average thermally sub-critical and over a background column density lower than that measured in other star forming regions so far. The core mass function of the prestellar cores peaks between 0.2 and 0.3 solar masses and it is compatible with the log-normal shape found in other regions. Herschel data reveal several, previously undetected, protostars and new candidates of Class 0 and Class II with transitional disks. We estimate the evolutionary status of the YSOs/protostars using two independent indicators: the $\alpha$ index and the fitting of the spectral energy distribution from near- to far-infrared wavelengths. For 70% of the objects, the evolutionary stages derived with the two methods are in agreement. Lupus is confirmed to be a very low-mass star-forming region, both in terms of the prestellar condensations and of the diffuse medium. Noticeably, in the Lupus clouds we have found star formation activity associated with interstellar medium at low column density, usually quiescent in other (more massive) star forming regions., Comment: 25 pages, 15 ifgures

Context. The stellar mass spectrum is an important property of the stellar cluster and a fundamental quantity to understand our Universe. The fragmentation of diffuse molecular cloud into stars is subject to physical processes such as gravity, turbulence, thermal pressure, and magnetic field. Aims. The final mass of a star is believed to be a combined outcome of a virially unstable reservoir and subsequent accretion. We aim to clarify the roles of different supporting energies, notably the thermal pressure and magnetic field, in determining the stellar mass. Methods. Following our previous studies, we performed a series of numerical experiments of stellar cluster formation inside an isolated molecular clump. We investigated whether any characteristic mass is introduced into the fragmentation processes by changing the effective equation of state (EOS) of the diffuse gas, that is to say gas whose density is below the critical density at which dust becomes opaque to its radiation, and the strength of the magnetic field. Results. The EOS of the diffuse gas, including the bulk temperature and polytropic index, does not significantly affect the shape of the stellar mass spectrum. The presence of magnetic field slightly modifies the shape of the mass spectrum only when extreme values are applied. Conclusions. This study confirms that the peak of the initial mass function is primarily determined by the adiabatic high-density end of the EOS that mimics the radiation inside the high-density gas. Furthermore, the shape of the mass spectrum is mostly sensitive to the density PDF and the magnetic field likely only a secondary role. In particular, we stress that the Jeans mass at the mean cloud density and at the critical density are not responsible for setting the peak.

We describe new Hi-GAL based maps of the entire Galactic Plane, obtained using continuum data in the wavelength range 70-500 $\mu$m. These maps are derived with the PPMAP procedure, and therefore represent a significant improvement over those obtained with standard analysis techniques. Specifically they have greatly improved resolution (12 arcsec) and, in addition to more accurate integrated column densities and mean dust temperatures, they give temperature-differential column densities, i.e., separate column density maps in twelve distinct dust temperature intervals, along with the corresponding uncertainty maps. The complete set of maps is available on-line. We briefly describe PPMAP and present some illustrative examples of the results. These include (a) multi-temperature maps of the Galactic HII region W5-E, (b) the temperature decomposition of molecular cloud column-density probability distribution functions, and (c) the global variation of mean dust temperature as a function of Galactocentric distance. Amongst our findings are: (i) a strong localised temperature gradient in W5-E in a direction orthogonal to that towards the ionising star, suggesting an alternative heating source and providing possible guidance for models of the formation of the bubble complex, and (ii) the overall radial profile of dust temperature in the Galaxy shows a monotonic decrease, broadly consistent both with models of the interstellar radiation field and with previous estimates at lower resolution. However, we also find a central temperature plateau within ~ 6 kpc of the Galactic centre, outside of which is a pronounced steepening of the radial profile. We performed sub-parsec ($\sim$ 0.014 pc) scale simulations of cloud-cloud collisions of two idealized turbulent molecular clouds (MCs) with different masses in the range of $0.76 - 2.67 \times 10^4$M$_{\odot}$ and with collision speeds of 5 $-$ 30 km/s. Those parameters are larger than Takahira, Tasker and Habe (2014) (paper I) in which the colliding system showed a partial gaseous arc morphology that supports the NANTEN observations of objects indicated to be colliding MCs by numerical simulations. Gas clumps with density greater than $10^{-20}$ g cm$^{-3}$ were identified as pre-stellar cores and tracked through the simulation to investigate the effect of mass of colliding clouds and collision speeds on the resulting core population. Our results demonstrate that smaller cloud property is more important for results of cloud cloud collisions. The mass function of formed cores can be approximated by a power law relation with index $\gamma$ = -1.6 in slower cloud cloud collisions ($v \sim 5 $ km/s), in good agreement with observation of MCs. A faster relative velocity increases the number of cores formed in the early stage of collisions and shortens gas accretion phase of cores in the shocked region, leading to suppression of core growth. The bending point appears in the high mass part of the core mass function and the bending point mass decreases with increasing of the collision velocity for the same combination of colliding clouds. The high mass part of the core mass function than the bending point mass can be approximated by a power law with $\gamma$ = -2.3 that is very similar to the power index of the massive part of the observed initial stellar mass function. Aims. We perform a multiwavelength analysis of the bubble Hii region Sh2-39 (N5) and its environs with the aim of studying the physical properties of Galactic IR bubbles and exploring their impact in triggering massive star formation. Methods. To analyze the molecular gas, we used CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) line data obtained with the on-the-fly technique from the ASTE telescope. To study the distribution and physical characteristics of the dust, we made use of archival data from ATLASGAL, Herschel, and MSX, while the ionized gas was studied making use of an NVSS image. We used public WISE, Spitzer, and MSX point source catalogs to search for infrared candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in the region. To investigate the stellar cluster [BDS2003]6 we used IR spectroscopic data obtained with the ARCoIRIS spectrograph, mounted on Blanco 4 m Telescope at CTIO, and new available IR Ks band observations from the VVVeXtended ESO Public Survey (VVVX). Results. The new ASTE observations allowed the molecular gas component in the velocity range from 30 km s-1 to 46 km s-1, associated with Sh2-39, to be studied in detail. The morphology of the molecular gas suggests that the ionized gas is expanding against its parental cloud. We identified four molecular clumps, which were likely formed by the expansion of the ionization front, and determined some of their physical and dynamical properties. Clumps with HCO+ and 870 μm counterparts show evidence of gravitational collapse. We identified several candidate YSOs across the molecular component. Their spatial distribution and the fragmentation time derived for the collected layers of the molecular gas suggest that massive star formation might have been triggered by the expansion of the nebula via the collect and collapse mechanism. The spectroscopical distance obtained for the stellar cluster [BDS2003]6, placed over one of the collapsing clumps in the border of the Hii region, reveals that this cluster is physically associated with the nebula and gives more support to the triggered massive star formation scenario. Observations indicate that stars generally lose their protoplanetary discs on a timescale of about 5 Myr. Which mechanisms are responsible for the disc dissipation is still debated. Here we investigate the movement through an ambient medium as a possible cause of disc dispersal. The ram pressure exerted by the flow can truncate the disc and the accretion of material with no azimuthal angular momentum leads to further disc contraction. We derive a theoretical model from accretion disc theory that describes the evolution of the disc radius, mass, and surface density profile as a function of the density and velocity of the ambient medium. We test our model by performing hydrodynamical simulations of a protoplanetary disc embedded in a flow with different velocities and densities. We find that our model gives an adequate description of the evolution of the disc radius and accretion rate onto the disc. The total disc mass in the simulations follows the theoretically expected trend, except at the lowest density where our simulated discs lose mass owing to continuous stripping. This stripping may be a numerical rather than a physical effect. Some quantitative differences exist between the model predictions and the simulations. These are at least partly caused by numerical viscous effects in the disc and depend on the resolution of the simulation. Our model can be used as a conservative estimate for the process of face-on accretion onto protoplanetary discs, as long as viscous processes in the disc can be neglected. The model predicts that in dense gaseous environments, discs can shrink substantially in size and can, in theory, sweep up an amount of gas of the order of their initial mass. International audience; We have resolved for the first time the radial and vertical structures of the almost edge-on envelope/disc system of the low-mass Class 0 protostar L1527. For that, we have used Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) observations with a spatial resolution of 0.25 × 0.13 arcsec2 and 0.37 × 0.23 arcsec2 at 0.8 and 1.2 mm, respectively. The L1527 dust continuum emission has a deconvolved size of 78 × 21 au2, and shows a flared disc-like structure. A thin infalling-rotating envelope is seen in the CCH emission outward of about 150 au, and its thickness is increased by a factor of 2 inward of it. This radius lies between the centrifugal radius (200 au) and the centrifugal barrier of the infalling-rotating envelope (100 au). The gas stagnates in front of the centrifugal barrier and moves towards vertical directions. SO emission is concentrated around and inside the centrifugal barrier. The rotation speed of the SO emitting gas is found to be decelerated around the centrifugal barrier. A part of the angular momentum could be extracted by the gas that moves away from the mid-plane around the centrifugal barrier. If this is the case, the centrifugal barrier would be related to the launching mechanism of low-velocity outflows, such as disc winds.

We used the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) to image, with an angular resolution of 0.5$''$ (120 au) and 1$''$ (235 au), respectively, the emission from 11 different organic molecules in the protostellar binary NGC1333 IRAS 4A. We clearly disentangled A1 and A2, the two protostellar cores present. For the first time, we were able to derive the column densities and fractional abundances simultaneously for the two objects, allowing us to analyse the chemical differences between them. Molecular emission from organic molecules is concentrated exclusively in A2 even though A1 is the strongest continuum emitter. The protostellar core A2 displays typical hot corino abundances and its deconvolved size is 70 au. In contrast, the upper limits we placed on molecular abundances for A1 are extremely low, lying about one order of magnitude below prestellar values. The difference in the amount of organic molecules present in A1 and A2 ranges between one and two orders of magnitude. Our results suggest that the optical depth of dust emission at these wavelengths is unlikely to be sufficiently high to completely hide a hot corino in A1 similar in size to that in A2. Thus, the significant contrast in molecular richness found between the two sources is most probably real. We estimate that the size of a hypothetical hot corino in A1 should be less than 12 au. Our results favour a scenario in which the protostar in A2 is either more massive and/or subject to a higher accretion rate than A1, as a result of inhomogeneous fragmentation of the parental molecular clump. (Abridged) Through spectrally unresolved observations of high-J CO transitions, Herschel-PACS has revealed large reservoirs of warm (300 K) and hot (700 K) molecular gas around low-mass protostars. We aim to shed light on the excitation and origin of the CO ladder observed toward protostars, and on the water abundance in different physical components using spectrally resolved Herschel-HIFI data. Observations are presented of the highly excited CO line J=16-15 with Herschel-HIFI toward 24 low-mass protostellar objects. The spectrally resolved profiles show two distinct velocity components: a broad component with an average FWHM of 20 km/s, and a narrower component with a FWHM of 5 km/s that is often offset from the source velocity. The average rotational temperature over the entire profile, as measured from comparison between CO J=16-15 and 10-9 emission, is ~300 K. A radiative-transfer analysis shows that the average H2O/CO column-density ratio is ~0.02, suggesting a total H2O abundance of ~2x10^-6. Two distinct velocity profiles observed in the HIFI line profiles suggest that the CO ladder observed with PACS consists of two excitation components. The warm component (300 K) is associated with the broad HIFI component, and the hot component (700 K) is associated with the offset HIFI component. The former originates in either outflow cavity shocks or the disk wind, and the latter in irradiated shocks. The ubiquity of the warm and hot CO components suggests that fundamental mechanisms govern the excitation of these components; we hypothesize that the warm component arises when H2 stops being the dominant coolant. In this scenario, the hot component arises in cooling molecular H2-poor gas just prior to the onset of H2 formation. Context. Reconstructing the structure and history of young clusters is pivotal to understanding the mechanisms and timescales of early stellar evolution and planet formation. Recent studies suggest that star clusters often exhibit a hierarchical structure, possibly resulting from several star formation episodes occurring sequentially rather than a monolithic cloud collapse. Aims. We aim to explore the structure of the open cluster and star-forming region NGC 2264 (∼3 Myr), which is one of the youngest, richest and most accessible star clusters in the local spiral arm of our Galaxy; we link the spatial distribution of cluster members to other stellar properties such as age and evolutionary stage to probe the star formation history within the region. Methods. We combined spectroscopic data obtained as part of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) with multi-wavelength photometric data from the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264 (CSI 2264) campaign. We examined a sample of 655 cluster members, with masses between 0.2 and 1.8 M and including both disk-bearing and disk-free young stars. We used T estimates from GES and g,r,i photometry from CSI 2264 to derive individual extinction and stellar parameters. Results. We find a significant age spread of 4-5 Myr among cluster members. Disk-bearing objects are statistically associated with younger isochronal ages than disk-free sources. The cluster has a hierarchical structure, with two main blocks along its latitudinal extension. The northern half develops around the O-type binary star S Mon; the southern half, close to the tip of the Cone Nebula, contains the most embedded regions of NGC 2264, populated mainly by objects with disks and ongoing accretion. The median ages of objects at different locations within the cluster, and the spatial distribution of disked and non-disked sources, suggest that star formation began in the north of the cluster, over 5 Myr ago, and was ignited in its southern region a few Myr later. Star formation is likely still ongoing in the most embedded regions of the cluster, while the outer regions host a widespread population of more evolved objects; these may be the result of an earlier star formation episode followed by outward migration on timescales of a few Myr. We find a detectable lag between the typical age of disk-bearing objects and that of accreting objects in the inner regions of NGC 2264: the first tend to be older than the second, but younger than disk-free sources at similar locations within the cluster. This supports earlier findings that the characteristic timescales of disk accretion are shorter than those of disk dispersal, and smaller than the average age of NGC 2264 (i.e., ≲ 3 Myr). At the same time, we note that disks in the north of the cluster tend to be shorter-lived (∼2.5 Myr) than elsewhere; this may reflect the impact of massive stars within the region (notably S Mon), that trigger rapid disk dispersal. Conclusions. Our results, consistent with earlier studies on NGC 2264 and other young clusters, support the idea of a star formation process that takes place sequentially over a prolonged span in a given region. We report on a systematic search for oxygen-bearing Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) in the Solar-like protostellar shock region L1157-B1, as part of the IRAM Large Program "Astrochemical Surveys At IRAM" (ASAI). Several COMs are unambiguously detected, some for the first time, such as ketene H$_2$CCO, dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$) and glycolaldehyde (HCOCH$_2$OH), and others firmly confirmed, such as formic acid (HCOOH) and ethanol (C$_2$H$_5$OH). Thanks to the high sensitivity of the observations and full coverage of the 1, 2 and 3mm wavelength bands, we detected numerous (10--125) lines from each of the detected species. Based on a simple rotational diagram analysis, we derive the excitation conditions and the column densities of the detected COMs. Combining our new results with those previously obtained towards other protostellar objects, we found a good correlation between ethanol, methanol and glycolaldehyde. Three dimensional (3D) magnetic field information on molecular clouds and cores is important for revealing their kinematical stability (magnetic support) against gravity which is fundamental for studying the initial conditions of star formation. In the present study, the 3D magnetic field structure of the dense starless core FeSt 1-457 is determined based on the near-infrared polarimetric observations of the dichroic polarization of background stars and simple 3D modeling. With an obtained angle of line-of-sight magnetic inclination axis $\theta_{\rm inc}$ of $45^{\circ}\pm10^{\circ}$ and previously determined plane-of-sky magnetic field strength $B_{\rm pol}$ of $23.8\pm12.1$ $\mu{\rm G}$, the total magnetic field strength for FeSt 1-457 is derived to be $33.7\pm18.0$ $\mu{\rm G}$. The critical mass of FeSt 1-457, evaluated using both magnetic and thermal/turbulent support is ${M}_{\rm cr} = 3.70\pm0.92$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is identical to the observed core mass, $M_{\rm core}=3.55\pm0.75$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$. We thus conclude that the stability of FeSt 1-457 is in a condition close to the critical state. Without infalling gas motion and no associated young stars, the core is regarded to be in the earliest stage of star formation, i.e., the stage just before the onset of dynamical collapse following the attainment of a supercritical condition. These properties would make FeSt 1-457 one of the best starless cores for future studies of the initial conditions of star formation., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

There is a large change in surface rotation rates of sun-like stars on the pre-main sequence and early main sequence. Since these stars have dynamo driven magnetic fields, this implies a strong evolution of their magnetic properties over this time period. The spin-down of these stars is controlled by interactions between stellar winds and magnetic fields, thus magnetic evolution in turn plays an important role in rotational evolution. We present here the second part of a study investigating the evolution of large-scale surface magnetic fields in this critical time period. We observed stars in open clusters and stellar associations with known ages between 120 and 650 Myr, and used spectropolarimetry and Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterize their large-scale magnetic field strength and geometry. We report 15 stars with magnetic detections here. These stars have masses from 0.8 to 0.95 Msun, rotation periods from 0.326 to 10.6 days, and we find large-scale magnetic field strengths from 8.5 to 195 G with a wide range of geometries. We find a clear trend towards decreasing magnetic field strength with age, and a power-law decrease in magnetic field strength with Rossby number. There is some tentative evidence for saturation of the large-scale magnetic field strength at Rossby numbers below 0.1, although the saturation point is not yet well defined. Comparing to younger classical T Tauri stars, we support the hypothesis that differences in internal structure produce large differences in observed magnetic fields, however for weak lined T Tauri stars this is less clear., Comment: 35 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The formation of massive stars is still not well understood. Accumulating a large amount of mass infalling within a single entity in spite of radiation pressure is possible if, among several other conditions, enough thermal energy is released. Despite numerous water line observations, with the Herschel Space Observatory, in most of the sources observations were not able to trace the emission from the hot core around the newly forming protostellar object. We want to probe the physical conditions and water abundance in the inner layers of the host protostellar object NGC7538-IRS1 using a highly excited H2O line. Water maser models predict that several THz water masers should be detectable in these objects. We present SOFIA observations of the o-H2O 8(2,7)-7(3,4) line at 1296.41106 GHz and a 6(1,6)-5(2,3) 22 GHz e-MERLIN map of the region (first-ever 22 GHz images made after the e-MERLIN upgrade). In order to be able to constrain the nature of the emission - thermal or maser - we use near-simultaneous observations of the 22 GHz water maser performed with the Effelsberg radiotelescope and e-MERLIN. A thermal water model using the RATRAN radiative transfer code is presented based on HIFI pointed observations. Molecular water abundances are derived for the hot core. The H2O 8(2,7)- 7(3,4) line is detected toward NGC7538-IRS1 with one feature at the source velocity (-57.7 km/s) and another one at -48.4 km/s. We propose that the emission at the source velocity is consistent with thermal excitation and is excited in the innermost part of the IRS1a massive protostellar object's closest circumstellar environment. The other emission is very likely the first detection of a water THz maser line, pumped by shocks due to IRS1b outflow, in a star-forming region. Assuming thermal excitation of the THz line, the water abundance in NGC7538-IRS1's hot core is estimated to be 5.2x10^{-5} with respect to H2., Comment: accepted to A&A, 15 pages

The Galactic Center is the nuclear region of the nearest spiral galaxy, Milky Way, and contains the supermassive black hole with M~4x10^6 Msun, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). One of basic questions about the Galactic Center is whether Sgr A* alone exists as a "massive" black hole in the region or not. The IRS13E complex is a very intriguing IR object which contains a large dark mass comparable to the mass of an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) from the proper motions of the main member stars. However, the existence of the IMBH remains controversial. There are some objections to accepting the existence of the IMBH. In this study, we detected ionized gas with a very large velocity width (Delta v_{FWZI} ~ 650 km/s) and a very compact size (~400 AU) in the complex using ALMA. We also found an extended component connecting with the compact ionized gas. The properties suggest that this would be an ionized gas flow on the Keplerian orbit with high eccentricity. The enclosed mass is estimated to be 10^4 Msun by the analysis of the orbit. The mass does not conflict with the upper limit mass of the IMBH around Sgr A* which is derived by the long-term astrometry with VLBA. In addition, the object probably has an X-ray counterpart. Consequently, a very fascinated possibility is that the detected ionized gas is rotating around an IMBH embedded in the IRS13E complex., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in APJL

To investigate the potential connection between the intense X-ray emission from young, low-mass stars and the lifetimes of their circumstellar, planet-forming disks, we have compiled the X-ray luminosities ($L_X$) of M stars in the $\sim$8 Myr-old TW Hya Association (TWA) for which X-ray data are presently available. Our investigation includes analysis of archival Chandra data for the TWA binary systems TWA 8, 9, and 13. Although our study suffers from poor statistics for stars later than M3, we find a trend of decreasing $L_X/L_{bol}$ with decreasing $T_{eff}$ for TWA M stars wherein the earliest-type (M0--M2) stars cluster near $\log{(L_X/L_{bol})} \approx -3.0$ and then $\log{(L_X/L_{bol})}$ decreases, and its distribution broadens, for types M4 and later. The fraction of TWA stars that display evidence for residual primordial disk material also sharply increases in this same (mid-M) spectral type regime. This apparent anticorrelation between the relative X-ray luminosities of low-mass TWA stars and the longevities of their circumstellar disks suggests that primordial disks orbiting early-type M stars in the TWA have dispersed rapidly as a consequence of their persistent large X-ray fluxes. Conversely, the disks orbiting the very lowest-mass pre-MS stars and pre-MS brown dwarfs in the Association may have survived because their X-ray luminosities and, hence, disk photoevaporation rates are very low to begin with, and then further decline relatively early in their pre-MS evolution., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures; to appear in The Astronomical Journal

This work is the first attempt to describe the multi-dimensional structure of accreting young stars based on fully compressible time implicit multi-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations. One major motivation is to analyse the validity of accretion treatment used in previous 1D stellar evolution studies. We analyse the effect of accretion on the structure of a realistic stellar model of the young Sun. Our work is inspired by the numerical work of Kley \& Lin (1996, ApJ, 461, 933) devoted to the structure of the boundary layer in accretion disks. We analyse the redistribution of accreted material with a range of values of specific entropy relative to the bulk specific entropy of the material in the accreting object's convective envelope. A primary goal is to understand whether and how accreted energy deposited onto a stellar surface is redistributed in the interior. This study focusses on the high accretion rates characteristic of FU Ori systems. We find that the highest entropy cases produce a distinctive behaviour in the mass redistribution, rms velocities, and enthalpy flux in the convective envelope. This change in behaviour is characterised by the formation of a hot layer on the surface of the accreting object, which tends to suppress convection in the envelope. We analyse the long-term effect of such a hot buffer zone on the structure and evolution of the accreting object with 1D stellar evolution calculations. We study the relevance of the assumption of redistribution of accreted energy into the stellar interior used in the literature. One conclusion is that, for a given amount of accreted energy transferred to the accreting object, a treatment assuming accretion energy redistribution throughout the stellar interior could significantly overestimate the effects on the stellar structure, in particular, on the resulting expansion., 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

[Context] Transitional disks are structures of dust and gas around young stars with large inner cavities in which planet formation may occur. Lopsided dust distributions are observed in the dust continuum emission at millimeter wavelengths. These asymmetrical structures can be explained as being the result of an enhanced gas density vortex where the dust is trapped, potentially promoting the rapid growth to the planetesimal scale., [Aims] AB Aur hosts a transitional disk with a clear horseshoe morphology which strongly suggests the presence of a dust trap. Our goal is to investigate its formation and the possible effects on the gas chemistry., [Methods] We used the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometer to image the 1 mm continuum dust emission and the 13CO J = 2 → 1, C18O J = 2 → 1, SO J = 56 → 45, and H2CO J = 303 → 202 rotational lines., [Results] Line integrated intensity ratio images are built to investigate the chemical changes within the disk. The I(H2CO J = 303 → 202)/I(C18O J = 2 → 1) ratio is fairly constant along the disk with values of ~0.15 ± 0.05. On the contrary, the I(SO J = 56 → 45)/I(C18O J = 2 → 1) and I(SO J = 56 → 45)/I(H2CO J = 303 → 202) ratios present a clear northeast-southwest gradient (a factor of 3−6) with the minimum towards the dust trap. This gradient cannot be explained by a local change in the excitation conditions but by a decrease in the SO abundance. Gas densities up to ~109 cm-3 are expected in the disk midplane and two-three times larger in the high pressure vortex. We have used a single point (n,T) chemical model to investigate the lifetime of gaseous CO, H2CO, and SO in the dust trap. Our model shows that for densities >107 cm-3, the SO molecules are depleted (directly frozen, or converted into SO2 and then frozen out) in less than 0.1 Myr. The lower SO abundance towards the dust trap could indicate that a larger fraction of the gas is in a high density environment., [Conclusions] Gas dynamics, grain growth and gas chemistry are coupled in the planet formation process. We detect a chemical signature of the presence of a dust trap in a transitional disk. Because of the strong dependence of SO abundance on the gas density, the sulfur chemistry can be used as a chemical diagnostic to detect the birthsites of future planets. Zeeman-Doppler imaging studies have revealed the complexity of the large-scale magnetic fields of accreting pre-main-sequence stars. All have multipolar magnetic fields with the octupole component being the dominant field mode for many of the stars studied thusfar. Young accreting stars with fully convective interiors often feature simple axisymmetric magnetic fields with dipole components of order a kilo-Gauss (at least those of mass $\gtrsim0.5\,{\rm M}_\odot$), while those with substantially radiative interiors host more complex non-axisymmetric magnetic fields with dipole components of order a few 0.1 kilo-Gauss. Here, via several simple examples, we demonstrate that i). in most cases, the dipole component alone can be used to estimate the disk truncation radius (but little else); ii) due the presence of higher order magnetic field components, the field strength in the accretion spots is far in excess of that expected if a pure dipole magnetic field is assumed. (Fields of $\sim$6$\,{\rm kG}$ have been measured in accretion spots.); iii) if such high field strengths are taken to be representative of the polar strength of a dipole magnetic field, the disk truncation radius would be overestimated.
