Search

The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), sources of high-frequency gravitational waves and likely production sites for heavy element nucleosynthesis via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). These heavy elements include some of great geophysical, biological and cultural importance, such as thorium, iodine and gold. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with compact object mergers, and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational-wave merger GW170817. We obtained James Webb Space Telescope mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A=130), and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-IR due to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy element nucleosynthesis across the Universe., Comment: Submitted. Barium titanate, BaTiO3 (BT), materials have been synthesized by two different routes: one ball-mill-derived (BMD) nanopowder and another precursor-derived (PCD) BT synthesis method were used separately to fabricate BT thin films on stainless steel (SS) and quartz substrates by spin coating. Then thin films from both synthesis routes were characterized by Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) Spectroscopy, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, and Four-point collinear probe; all carried out at room temperature. Our studies revealed that the PCD synthesis process did not produce the BT phase even under the 900^0C air-annealing condition. In contrast, a homogeneous BT thin film has been formed from the BMD-BT nanopowder. The optical band gap of BMD-BT thin films was found in the 3.10 - 3.28 eV range. Finally, a Graphene-Barium Titanate-Graphene (G-BT-G) structure was fabricated on a SS substrate by spin coating at processing temperatures below 100^0C and characterized by two different pieces of equipment: a Potentiostat/Galvanostat (PG-STAT) and a Precision Impedance Analyzer (PIA). The G-BT-G structure exhibited a capacitance of 8 nF and 7.15 nF, a highest dielectric constant of 800 and 790, and a low dielectric loss of 4.5 and 5, investigated by PG-STAT and PIA equipment, respectively., Comment: 25 pages, 11 Figures

GRB 220627A is a rare burst with two distinct gamma-ray emission episodes separated by almost 1000 s that triggered the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor twice. High-energy GeV emission was detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope coincident with the first emission episode but not the second. The discovery of the optical afterglow with MeerLICHT led to MUSE observations which secured the burst redshift to z=3.08, making this the most distant ultra-long gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected to date. The progenitors of some ultra-long GRBs have been suggested in the literature to be different to those of normal long GRBs. Our aim is to determine whether the afterglow and host properties of GRB 220627A agree with this interpretation. We performed empirical and theoretical modelling of the afterglow data within the external forward shock framework, and determined the metallicity of the GRB environment through modelling the absorption lines in the MUSE spectrum. Our optical data show evidence for a jet break in the light curve at ~1.2 days, while our theoretical modelling shows a preference for a homogeneous circumburst medium. Our forward shock parameters are typical for the wider GRB population, and we find that the environment of the burst is characterised by a sub-solar metallicity. Our observations and modelling of GRB 220627A do not suggest that a different progenitor compared to the progenitor of normal long GRBs is required. We find that more observations of ultra-long GRBs are needed to determine if they form a separate population with distinct prompt and afterglow features, and possibly distinct progenitors., 17 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Context: The extreme luminosity of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) makes them powerful beacons for studies of the distant Universe. The most luminous bursts are typically detected at moderate/high redshift, where the volume for seeing such rare events is maximized and the star-formation activity is greater than at z = 0. For distant events, not all observations are feasible, such as at TeV energies. Aims: Here we present a spectroscopic redshift measurement for the exceptional GRB 221009A, the brightest GRB observed to date with emission extending well into the TeV regime. Methods: We used the X-shooter spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain simultaneous optical to near-IR spectroscopy of the burst afterglow 0.5 days after the explosion. Results: The spectra exhibit both absorption and emission lines from material in a host galaxy at z = 0.151. Thus GRB 221009A was a relatively nearby burst with a luminosity distance of 745 Mpc. Its host galaxy properties (star-formation rate and metallicity) are consistent with those of LGRB hosts at low redshift. This redshift measurement yields information on the energy of the burst. The inferred isotropic energy release, $E_{\rm iso} > 5 \times 10^{54}$ erg, lies at the high end of the distribution, making GRB 221009A one of the nearest and also most energetic GRBs observed to date. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterised by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the keV-MeV band that is likely produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission. Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the external medium generates external shock waves, responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months, and occurs over a broad energy range, from the radio to the GeV bands. The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation by electrons accelerated at the external shock. Recently, an intense, long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 TeV was observed from the GRB 190114C. Here we present the results of our multi-frequency observational campaign of GRB~190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from $5\times10^{-6}$ up to $10^{12}$\,eV. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the TeV emission constituting a distinct spectral component that has power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow, and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton upscattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed TeV component are not atypical, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs.

We report the detections of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), vibrationally-excited H$_2$ (H$^*_2$), and neutral atomic carbon (CI), in two new afterglow spectra of GRBs\,181020A ($z=2.938$) and 190114A ($z=3.376$), observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Both host-galaxy absorption systems are characterized by strong damped Lyman-$��$ absorbers (DLAs) and substantial amounts of molecular hydrogen with $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.20\pm 0.05,~20.40\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,181020A) and $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.15\pm 0.05,~19.44\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,190114A). The DLA metallicites, depletion levels and dust extinctions are [Zn/H] = $-1.57\pm 0.06$, [Zn/Fe] = $0.67\pm 0.03$, and $A_V = 0.27\pm 0.02$\,mag (GRB\,181020A) and [Zn/H] = $-1.23\pm 0.07$, [Zn/Fe] = $1.06\pm 0.08$, and $A_V = 0.36\pm 0.02$\,mag (GRB\,190114A). We then examine the molecular gas content of all known H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs and explore the physical conditions and characteristics of these systems. We confirm that H$_2$ is detected in all CI- and H$^*_2$-bearing GRB absorption systems, but that these rarer features are not necessarily detected in all GRB H$_2$ absorbers. We find that a large molecular fraction of $f_{\rm H_2} \gtrsim 10^{-3}$ is required for CI to be detected. The defining characteristic for H$^*_2$ to be present is less clear, though a large H$_2$ column density is an essential factor. We then derive the H$_2$ excitation temperatures of the molecular gas and find that they are relatively low with $T_{\rm ex} \approx 100 - 300$\,K, however, there could be evidence of warmer components populating the high-$J$ H$_2$ levels in GRBs\,181020A and 190114A. Finally, we demonstrate that the otherwise successful X-shooter GRB afterglow campaign is hampered by a significant dust bias excluding the most dust-obscured H$_2$ absorbers from identification [Abridged]., 15 pages, 15 figures + Appendix. Long gamma-ray bursts mark the death of massive stars, as revealed by their association with energetic broad-lined stripped-envelope supernovae. The scarcity of nearby events and the brightness of the GRB afterglow, dominating the first days of emission, have so far prevented the study of the very early stages of the GRB-SN evolution. Here we present detailed, multi-epoch spectroscopic observations of SN 2017iuk, associated with GRB 171205A which display features at extremely high expansion velocities of $\sim$ 100,000 km s$^{-1}$ within the first day after the burst. These high-velocity components are characterized by chemical abundances different from those observed in the ejecta of SN 2017iuk at later times. Using spectral synthesis models developed for the SN 2017iuk, we explain these early features as originating not from the supernova ejecta, but from a hot cocoon generated by the energy injection of a mildly-relativistic GRB jet expanding into the medium surrounding the progenitor star. This cocoon becomes rapidly transparent and is outshone by the supernova emission which starts dominating three days after the burst. Here we built up a sample of 22 GRBs at redshifts $z > 2$ observed with X-shooter to determine the abundances of hydrogen, metals, dust, and molecular species. This allows us to study the metallicity and dust depletion effects in the neutral ISM at high redshift and to answer the question whether (and why) there might be a lack of H$_2$ in GRB-DLAs. We fit absorption lines and measure the column densities of different metal species as well as atomic and molecular hydrogen. The derived relative abundances are used to fit dust depletion sequences and determine the dust-to-metals ratio and the host-galaxy intrinsic visual extinction. There is no lack of H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs. We detect absorption lines from H$_2$ in 6 out of 22 GRB afterglow spectra, with molecular fractions ranging between $f\simeq 5\cdot10^{-5}$ and $f\simeq 0.04$, and claim tentative detections in three other cases. The GRB-DLAs in the present sample have on average low metallicities ($\mathrm{[X/H]}\approx -1.3$), comparable to the rare population of QSO-ESDLAs (log N(HI) $> 21.5$). H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs are found to be associated with significant dust extinction, $A_V > 0.1$ mag, and have dust-to-metals ratios DTM$ > 0.4$. All of these systems exhibit column densities of log N(HI) $> 21.7$. The overall fraction of H$_2$ detections is $\ge 27$% (41% including tentative detections), which is three times larger than in the general population of QSO-DLAs. For $2 21.7$, the H$_2$ detection fraction is 60-80% in GRB-DLAs as well as in extremely strong QSO-DLAs. This is likely a consequence of the fact that both GRB- and QSO-DLAs with high N(HI) probe sight-lines with small impact parameters that indicate that the absorbing gas is associated with the inner regions of the absorbing galaxy, where the gas pressure is higher and the conversion of HI to H$_2$ takes place., Comment: 45 pages, 39 figures

The discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened the era of GW+EM multi-messenger astronomy. Exploiting this breakthrough requires increasing samples to explore the diversity of kilonova behaviour and provide more stringent constraints on the Hubble constant, and tests of fundamental physics. LSST can play a key role in this field in the 2020s, when the gravitational wave detector network is expected to detect higher rates of merger events involving neutron stars ($\sim$10s per year) out to distances of several hundred Mpc. The UV extinction feature at 2175 �� is ubiquitously observed in the Galaxy but is rarely detected at high redshifts. Here we report the spectroscopic detection of the 2175 �� bump on the sightline to the ��-ray burst (GRB) afterglow GRB 180325A at z=2.2486, the only unambiguous detection over the past ten years of GRB follow-up, at four different epochs with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-shooter. Additional photometric observations of the afterglow are obtained with the Gamma-Ray burst Optical and Near-Infrared Detector (GROND). We construct the near-infrared to X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at four spectroscopic epochs. The SEDs are well-described by a single power-law and an extinction law with R_V~4.4, A_V~1.5, and the 2175 �� extinction feature. The bump strength and extinction curve are shallower than the average Galactic extinction curve. We determine a metallicity of [Zn/H]>-0.98 from the VLT/X-shooter spectrum. We detect strong neutral carbon associated with the GRB with an equivalent width of Wr(��1656) = 0.85+/-0.05. We also detect optical emission lines from the host galaxy. Based on the H��emission line flux, the derived dust-corrected star-formation rate is ~46+/-4 M_sun/yr and the predicted stellar mass is log M*/M_sun~9.3+/-0.4, suggesting the host galaxy is amongst the main-sequence star-forming galaxies., 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, Table 1 is in the journal electronic version, accepted for ApJL

We report the results of our observing campaign on GRB140903A, a nearby (z=0.351) short duration (T90~0.3 s) gamma-ray burst discovered by Swift. We monitored the X-ray afterglow with Chandra up to 21 days after the burst, and detected a steeper decay of the X-ray flux after approximately 1 day. Continued monitoring at optical and radio wavelengths showed a similar decay in flux at nearly the same time, and we interpret it as evidence of a narrowly collimated jet. By using the standard fireball model to describe the afterglow evolution, we derive a jet opening angle of 5 deg and a collimation-corrected total energy release of 2E50 erg. We further discuss the nature of the GRB progenitor system. Three main lines disfavor a massive star progenitor: the properties of the prompt gamma-ray emission, the age and low star-formation rate of the host galaxy, and the lack of a bright supernova. We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry for three gamma-ray burst supernovae (GRB-SNe): GRB 120729A, GRB 130215A / SN 2013ez and GRB 130831A / SN 2013fu. In the case of GRB 130215A / SN 2013ez, we also present optical spectroscopy at t-t0=16.1 d, which covers rest-frame 3000-6250 Angstroms. Based on Fe II (5169) and Si (II) (6355), our spectrum indicates an unusually low expansion velocity of 4000-6350 km/s, the lowest ever measured for a GRB-SN. Additionally, we determined the brightness and shape of each accompanying SN relative to a template supernova (SN 1998bw), which were used to estimate the amount of nickel produced via nucleosynthesis during each explosion. We find that our derived nickel masses are typical of other GRB-SNe, and greater than those of SNe Ibc that are not associated with GRBs. For GRB 130831A / SN 2013fu, we use our well-sampled R-band light curve (LC) to estimate the amount of ejecta mass and the kinetic energy of the SN, finding that these too are similar to other GRB-SNe. For GRB 130215A, we take advantage of contemporaneous optical/NIR observations to construct an optical/NIR bolometric LC of the afterglow. We fit the bolometric LC with the millisecond magnetar model of Zhang & Meszaros (2001), which considers dipole radiation as a source of energy injection to the forward shock powering the optical/NIR afterglow. Using this model we derive an initial spin period of P=12 ms and a magnetic field of B=1.1 x 10^15 G, which are commensurate with those found for proposed magnetar central engines of other long-duration GRBs., Archive copy - 24 pages, 12 Figures, 3 Tables. We present an analysis of the photometry and spectroscopy of the host galaxy of Swift-detected GRB 080517. From our optical spectroscopy, we identify a redshift of z = 0.089 +/- 0.003, based on strong emission lines, making this a rare example of a very local, low luminosity, long gamma ray burst. The galaxy is detected in the radio with a flux density of S(4.8GHz) =0.22 +/- 0.04mJy - one of relatively few known GRB hosts with a securely measured radio flux. Both optical emission lines and a strong detection at 22 um suggest that the host galaxy is forming stars rapidly, with an inferred star formation rate ~16 Msun/yr and a high dust obscuration (E(B-V )>1, based on sight-lines to the nebular emission regions). The presence of a companion galaxy within a projected distance of 25 kpc, and almost identical in redshift, suggests that star formation may have been triggered by galaxy-galaxy interaction. However, fitting of the remarkably flat spectral energy distribution from the ultraviolet through to the infrared suggests that an older, 500Myr post-starburst stellar population is present along with the ongoing star formation. We suggest that that the host galaxy of GRB 080517 is a valuable addition to the still very small sample of well-studied local gamma-ray burst hosts., 17 pages, minor edits to match accepted version

At low redshift, a handful of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been discovered with peak luminosities ($L_{\rm iso} < 10^{48.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$) substantially lower than the average of the more distant ones ($L_{\rm iso} > 10^{49.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$). The properties of several low-luminosity (low-$L$) GRBs indicate that they can be due to shock break-out, as opposed to the emission from ultrarelativistic jets. Owing to this, it is highly debated how both populations are connected, and whether there is a continuum between them. The burst at redshift $z=0.283$ from 2012 April 22 is one of the very few examples of intermediate-$L$ GRBs with a $\gamma$-ray luminosity of $L\sim10^{48.9}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$ that have been detected up to now. Together with the robust detection of its accompanying supernova SN 2012bz, it has the potential to answer important questions on the origin of low- and high-$L$ GRBs and the GRB-SN connection. We carried out a spectroscopy campaign using medium- and low-resolution spectrographs at 6--10-m class telescopes, covering the time span of 37.3 days, and a multi-wavelength imaging campaign from radio to X-ray energies over a duration of $\sim270$ days. Furthermore, we used a tuneable filter centred at H$\alpha$ to map star formation in the host galaxy and the surrounding galaxies. We used these data to extract and model the properties of different radiation components and incorporate spectral-energy-distribution fitting techniques to extract the properties of the host galaxy. Modelling the light curve and spectral energy distribution from the radio to the X-rays revealed the blast-wave to expand with an initial Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\sim60$, low for a high-$L$ GRB, and that the afterglow had an exceptional low peak luminosity-density of $\lesssim2\times10^{30}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}\,\rm{Hz}^{-1}$ in the sub-mm. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been found to be associated with broad-lined type-Ic supernovae (SNe), but only a handful of cases have been studied in detail. Prompted by the discovery of the exceptionally bright, nearby GRB130427A (redshift z=0.3399), we aim at characterising the properties of its associated SN2013cq. This is the first opportunity to test directly the progenitors of high-luminosity GRBs. We monitored the field of the Swift long duration GRB130427A using the 3.6-m TNG and the 8.2-m VLT during the time interval between 3.6 and 51.6 days after the burst. Photometric and spectroscopic observations revealed the presence of the type Ic SN2013cq. Spectroscopic analysis suggests that SN2013cq resembles two previous GRB-SNe, SN1998bw and SN2010bh associated with GRB980425 and XRF100316D, respectively. The bolometric light curve of SN2013cq, which is significantly affected by the host galaxy contribution, is systematically more luminous than that of SN2010bh ($\sim$ 2 mag at peak), but is consistent with SN1998bw. The comparison with the light curve model of another GRB-connected SN2003dh, indicates that SN2013cq is consistent with the model when brightened by 20%. This suggests a synthesised radioactive $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim 0.4 M_\odot$. GRB130427A/SN2013cq is the first case of low-z GRB-SN connection where the GRB energetics are extreme ($E_{\rm \gamma, iso} \sim 10^{54}$ erg). We show that the maximum luminosities attained by SNe associated with GRBs span a very narrow range, but those associated with XRFs are significantly less luminous. Luminous infrared galaxies and submillimeter galaxies contribute significantly to stellar mass assembly and the frequency of GRBs in these systems provides an important test of the connection between the gamma-ray burst rate and that of overall cosmic star-formation. We present sensitive 3 GHz radio observations using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array of 32 uniformly-selected GRB host galaxies spanning a redshift range from 0 < z < 2.5, providing the first fully dust- and sample-unbiased measurement of the fraction of GRBs originating from the Universe's most bolometrically luminous galaxies. Four galaxies are detected, with inferred radio star-formation rates ranging between 50-300 Msun/yr. Three of the four detections correspond to events consistent with being optically-obscured "dark" bursts. Our overall detection fraction implies that between 9-23% of GRBs between 0.5 < z < 2.5 occur in galaxies with S_3GHz > 10 uJy, corresponding to SFR >50 Msun/yr at z~1 or >250 Msun/yr at z~2. Similar galaxies contribute approximately 10-30% of all cosmic star-formation, so our results are consistent with a GRB rate which is not strongly biased with respect to the total star-formation rate of a galaxy. However, all four radio-detected hosts have modest stellar masses (~few x 10^10 Msun), significantly lower than IR/submillimeter-selected field galaxies of similar luminosities. We suggest that the GRB rate may be suppressed in metal-rich environments but independently enhanced in intense starbursts, producing a strong efficiency dependence on mass but little net dependence on bulk galaxy star-formation rate., Accepted to ApJ

We present the redshift results from a Very Large Telescope program aimed at optimizing the legacy value of the Swift mission: to characterize a homogeneous, X-ray selected, sample of 69 GRB host galaxies. 19 new redshifts have been secured, resulting in a 83% (57/69) redshift completion, making the survey the most comprehensive in terms of redshift completeness of any sample to the full Swift depth, available to date. We present the cumulative redshift distribution and derive a conservative, yet small, associated uncertainty. We constrain the fraction of Swift GRBs at high redshift to a maximum of 10% (5%) for z > 6 (z > 7). The mean redshift of the host sample is assessed to be > 2.2. Using this more complete sample, we confirm previous findings that the GRB rate at high redshift (z > 3) appears to be in excess of predictions based on assumptions that it should follow conventional determinations of the star formation history of the universe, combined with an estimate of its likely metallicity dependence. This suggests that either star formation at high redshifts has been significantly underestimated, for example due to a dominant contribution from faint, undetected galaxies, or that GRB production is enhanced in the conditions of early star formation, beyond those usually ascribed to lower metallicity., 7th Huntsville Gamma-Ray Burst Symposium, GRB 2013: paper 34 in eConf Proceedings C1304143

We present multiwavelength observations of the afterglow of GRB 130427A, the brightest (in total fluence) gamma-ray burst of the past 29 years. Optical spectroscopy from Gemini-North reveals the redshift of the GRB to be z=0.340, indicating that its unprecedented brightness is primarily the result of its relatively close proximity to Earth; the intrinsic luminosities of both the GRB and its afterglow are not extreme in comparison to other bright GRBs. We present a large suite of multiwavelength observations spanning from 300 s to 130 d after the burst and demonstrate that the afterglow shows relatively simple, smooth evolution at all frequencies with no significant late-time flaring or rebrightening activity. The entire dataset from 1 GHz to 10 GeV can be modeled as synchrotron emission from a combination of reverse and forward shocks in good agreement with the standard afterglow model, providing strong support to the applicability of the underlying theory and clarifying the nature of the GeV emission observed to last for minutes to hours following other very bright GRBs. A tenuous, wind-stratified circumburst density profile is required by the observations, suggesting a massive-star progenitor with a low mass-loss rate, perhaps due to low metallicity. GRBs similar in nature to GRB 130427A, inhabiting low-density media and exhibiting strong reverse shocks, are probably not uncommon but may have been difficult to recognize in the past due to their relatively faint late-time radio emission; more such events should be found in abundance by the new generation of sensitive radio and millimeter instruments., Accepted to ApJ. We present optical, near-infrared, and radio observations of the afterglow of GRB 120521C. By modeling the multi-wavelength dataset, we derive a photometric redshift of z~6.0, which we confirm with a low signal-to-noise ratio spectrum of the afterglow. We find that a model with a constant-density environment provides a good fit to the afterglow data, with an inferred density of 0.05/cm^3. The radio observations reveal the presence of a jet break at 7 d, corresponding to a jet opening angle of ~ 3 deg. The beaming-corrected gamma-ray and kinetic energies are both ~ 3e50 erg. We quantify the uncertainties in our results using a detailed Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis, which allows us to uncover degeneracies between the physical parameters of the explosion. To compare GRB 120521C to other high-redshift bursts in a uniform manner we re-fit all available afterglow data for the two other bursts at z>6 with radio detections (GRBs 050904 and 090423). We find a jet break at ~ 15 d for GRB 090423, in contrast to previous work. Based on these three events, we find that GRBs at z>6 appear to explode in constant-density environments, and exhibit a wide range of energies and densities that span the range inferred for lower redshift bursts. On the other hand, we find a hint for narrower jets in the z>6 bursts, potentially indicating a larger true event rate at these redshifts. The objective of this paper is to determine the level of obscured star formation activity and dust attenuation in a sample of gamma-ray burst (GRB) hosts; and to test the hypothesis that GRB hosts have properties consistent with those of the general star-forming galaxy populations. Following on from our discovery of a significant population of M31 outer halo globular clusters (GCs), and updates to the Revised Bologna Catalogue of M31 GCs, we investigate the GC system of M31 out to an unprecedented radius (~120kpc). We derive various ensemble properties, including the magnitude, colour and metallicity distributions, as well as the GC number density profile. One of our most significant findings is evidence for a flattening in the radial GC number density profile in the outer halo. Intriguingly, this occurs at a galactocentric radius of ~2 degrees (~30 kpc) which is the radius at which the underlying stellar halo surface density has also been shown to flatten. The GCs which lie beyond this radius are remarkably uniform in terms of their blue (V-I)o colours, consistent with them belonging to an ancient population with little to no metallicity gradient. Structural parameters are also derived for a sample of 13 newly-discovered extended clusters (ECs) and we find the lowest luminosity ECs have magnitudes and sizes similar to Palomar-type GCs in the Milky Way halo. We argue that our findings provide strong support for a scenario in which a significant fraction of the outer halo GC population of M31 has been accreted., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. We present high-speed optical photometry of the soft gamma repeater SGR 0501+4516, obtained with ULTRACAM on two consecutive nights approximately 4 months after the source was discovered via its gamma-ray bursts. We detect SGR 0501+4516 at a magnitude of i' = 24.4+/-0.1. We present the first measurement of optical pulsations from an SGR, deriving a period of 5.7622+/-0.0003 s, in excellent agreement with the X-ray spin period of the neutron star. We compare the morphologies of the optical pulse profile with the X-ray and infrared pulse profiles; we find that the optical, infrared and harder X-rays share similar double-peaked morphologies, but the softer X-rays exhibit only a single-peaked morphology, indicative of a different origin. The optical pulsations appear to be in phase with the X-ray pulsations and exhibit a root-mean-square pulsed fraction of 52+/-7%, approximately a factor of two greater than in the X-rays. We present deep infrared (Ks band) imaging polarimetry and radio (1.4 and 4.8 GHz) polarimetry of the enigmatic transient Swift J164449.3+573451. This source appears to be a short lived jet phenomenon in a galaxy at redshift z = 0.354, activated by a sudden mass accretion onto the central massive black hole, possibly caused by the tidal disruption of a star. We aim to find evidence for this scenario through linear polarimetry, as linear polarisation is a sensitive probe of jet physics, source geometry and the various mechanisms giving rise to the observed radiation. We find a formal Ks band polarisation measurement of P_lin = 7.4 +/- 3.5 % (including systematic errors). Our radio observations show continuing brightening of the source, which allows sensitive searches for linear polarisation as a function of time. We find no evidence of linear polarisation at radio wavelengths of 1.4 GHz and 4.8 GHz at any epoch, with the most sensitive 3 sigma limits as deep as 2.1%. These upper limits are in agreement with expectations from scenarios in which the radio emission is produced by the interaction of a relativistic jet with a dense circumsource medium. We further demonstrate how the polarisation properties can be used to derive properties of the jet in Swift J164449.3+573451, exploiting the similarities between this source and the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. We present ground-based and HST optical observations of the optical transients (OTs) of long-duration Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) 060729 and 090618, both at a redshift of z = 0.54. For GRB 060729, bumps are seen in the optical light curves (LCs), and the late-time broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the OT resemble those of local type Ic supernovae (SNe). For GRB 090618, the dense sampling of our optical observations has allowed us to detect well-defined bumps in the optical LCs, as well as a change in colour, that are indicative of light coming from a core-collapse SN. The accompanying SNe for both events are individually compared with SN1998bw, a known GRB-supernova, and SN1994I, a typical type Ic supernova without a known GRB counterpart, and in both cases the brightness and temporal evolution more closely resemble SN1998bw. We also exploit our extensive optical and radio data for GRB 090618, as well as the publicly-available SWIFT -XRT data, and discuss the properties of the afterglow at early times. In the context of a simple jet-like model, the afterglow of GRB 090618 is best explained by the presence of a jet-break at t-to > 0.5 days. We then compare the rest-frame, peak V -band absolute magnitudes of all of the GRB and X-Ray Flash (XRF)-associated SNe with a large sample of local type Ibc SNe, concluding that, when host extinction is considered, the peak magnitudes of the GRB/XRF-SNe cannot be distinguished from the peak magnitudes of non-GRB/XRF SNe., Accepted for publication in MNRAS on Dec 07, 2010. 18 pages, 12 figures, 9 tables

The outer regions of disc galaxies are becoming increasingly recognized as key testing sites for models of disc assembly and evolution. Important issues are the epoch at which the bulk of the stars in these regions formed and how discs grow radially over time. To address these issues, we use Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging to study the star formation history (SFH) of two fields at 9.1 and 11.6 kpc along M33's northern major axis. These fields lie at ~ 4 and 5 V-band disc scale-lengths and straddle the break in M33's surface brightness profile. The colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) reach the ancient main sequence turnoff with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~ 5. From detailed modelling of the CMDs, we find that the majority of stars in both fields combined formed at z < 1. The mean age in the inner field, S1, is ~ 3 +/- 1 Gyr and the mean metallicity is [M/H] ~ -0.5 +/- 0.2 dex. The star formation history of S1 unambiguously reveals how the inside-out growth previously measured for M33's inner disc out to ~ 6 kpc extends out to the disc edge at ~ 9 kpc. In comparison, the outer field, S2, is older (mean age ~ 7 +/- 2 Gyr), more metal-poor (mean [M/H] ~ -0.8 +/- 0.3 dex), and contains ~ 30 times less stellar mass. These results provide the most compelling evidence yet that M33's age gradient reverses at large radii near the disc break and that this reversal is accompanied by a break in stellar mass surface density. We discuss several possible interpretations of this behaviour including radial stellar mixing, warping of the gaseous disc, a change in star formation efficiency, and a transition to another structural component. It is thought that the first generations of massive stars in the Universe were an important, and quite possibly dominant, source of the ultra-violet radiation that reionized the hydrogen gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM); a state in which it has remained to the present day. Measurements of cosmic microwave background anisotropies suggest that this phase-change largely took place in the redshift range z=10.8 +/- 1.4, while observations of quasars and Lyman-alpha galaxies have shown that the process was essentially completed by z=6. However, the detailed history of reionization, and characteristics of the stars and proto-galaxies that drove it, remain unknown. Further progress in understanding requires direct observations of the sources of ultra-violet radiation in the era of reionization, and mapping the evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction through time. The detection of galaxies at such redshifts is highly challenging, due to their intrinsic faintness and high luminosity distance, whilst bright quasars appear to be rare beyond z~7. Here we report the discovery of a gamma-ray burst, GRB 090423, at redshift z=8.26 -0.08 +0.07. This is well beyond the redshift of the most distant spectroscopically confirmed galaxy (z=6.96) and quasar (z=6.43). It establishes that massive stars were being produced, and dying as GRBs, ~625 million years after the Big Bang. In addition, the accurate position of the burst pinpoints the location of the most distant galaxy known to date. Larger samples of GRBs beyond z~7 will constrain the evolving rate of star formation in the early universe, while rapid spectroscopy of their afterglows will allow direct exploration of the progress of reionization with cosmic time., Comment: Submitted to Nature

We present the largest and most detailed survey to date of the stellar populations in the outskirts of M31 based on the analysis of 14 deep HST/ACS pointings spanning the range 11.5-45.0 kpc. We conduct a quantitative comparison of the resolved stellar populations in these fields and identify several striking trends. The color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), which reach ~3 magnitudes below the red clump, can be classified into two main categories based on their morphologies. `Stream-like' fields, so named for their similarity to the CMD of the giant stellar stream, are characterized by a red clump that slants bluewards at fainter magnitudes and an extended horizontal branch. On the other hand, `disk-like' fields exhibit rounder red clumps with significant luminosity width, lack an obvious horizontal branch and show evidence for recent star formation (~0.25 - 2.0 Gyr ago). We compare the spatial and line-of-sight distribution of stream-like fields with a recent simulation of the giant stream progenitor orbit and find an excellent agreement. These fields, found across the face of M31, attest to the high degree of pollution caused by this event. Disk-like material resides in the extended disk structure of M31 and is detected out to 44 kpc (projected); the uniform populations in these fields, including the ubiquitous presence of young populations, and the strong rotation reported elsewhere are most consistent with a scenario in which this structure has formed through heating and disruption of the existing thin disk, perhaps due to the impact of the giant stream progenitor. We report on the detection by Swift of GRB 080913, and subsequent optical/near-infrared follow-up observations by GROND which led to the discovery of its optical/NIR afterglow and the recognition of its high-z nature via the detection of a spectral break between the i' and z' bands. Spectroscopy obtained at the ESO-VLT revealed a continuum extending down to lambda = 9400 A, and zero flux for 7500 A < lambda, 14 pages, 7 figures, ApJ (subm)

The properties of their hosts provide important clues to the progenitors of different classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The hosts themselves also constitute a sample of high-redshift star-forming galaxies which, unlike most other methods, is not selected on the luminosities of the galaxies themselves. New wide-field near-infrared (NIR) imaging observations of M33 were obtained from UKIRT. These show a large population of intermediate-age stars considerably improving on previous NIR data. The spatial distribution of super giant stars, carbon-rich (C-rich or C stars) and oxygen-rich (O-rich or M stars) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars distinguished from the NIR colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) have been studied as well as the C/M ratio. Context: Before the launch of the Swift satellite, the majority of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows for which Ly-alpha was redshifted into the observable spectrum showed evidence for a damped Ly-alpha absorber. This small sample indicated that GRBs explode either in galaxies, or regions within them, having high neutral hydrogen column densities. Aims: To increase the spectroscopic sample of GRBs with z > 2 and hence establish the N(HI) distribution along GRB lines-of-sight. Methods: We have obtained six z > 2 GRB afterglow spectra and fitted the Ly-alpha absorption line in each case to determine N(HI). This has been complemented with 12 other Swift N(HI) values from the literature. Results: We show that the peak of the GRB N(HI) distribution is qualitatively consistent with a model where GRBs originate in Galactic-like molecular clouds. However, a systematic difference, in particular an excess of low column-density systems compared to the predictions, indicates that selection effects and conditions within the cloud (e.g. strong ionization) influence the observed N(HI) range. We also report the discovery of Ly-alpha emission from the GRB 060714 host, corresponding to a star-formation rate of approximately 0.8 M_Sun/year. Finally, we present accurate redshifts of the six bursts: z = 3.240 +/- 0.001 (GRB 050319), z = 2.198 +/- 0.002 (GRB 050922C), z = 3.221 +/- 0.001 (GRB 060526), z = 3.425 +/- 0.002 (GRB 060707), z = 2.711 +/- 0.001 (GRB 060714) and z = 3.686 +/- 0.002 (GRB 060906)., 5 pages, 3 figures. We present the first optical observations of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow using the 2-m robotic Liverpool Telescope (LT), which is owned and operated by Liverpool John Moores University and situated on La Palma. We briefly discuss the capabilities of LT and its suitability for rapid follow-up observations of early optical and infrared GRB light curves. In particular, the combination of aperture, site, instrumentation and rapid response (robotic over-ride mode aided by telescope's rapid slew and fully-opening enclosure) makes the LT ideal for investigating the nature of short bursts, optically-dark bursts, and GRB blast-wave physics in general. We briefly describe the LT's key position in the RoboNet-1.0 network of robotic telescopes. In 2000, Lamb and Reichart predicted that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows occur in sufficient numbers and at sufficient brightnesses at very high redshifts (z > 5) to eventually replace quasars as the preferred probe of element formation and reionization in the early universe and to be used to characterize the star-formation history of the early universe, perhaps back to when the first stars formed. Here we report the discovery of the afterglow of GRB 050904 and the identification of GRB 050904 as the first very high redshift GRB. We measure its redshift to be 6.39(+0.11,-0.12), which is consistent with the reported spectroscopic redshift (6.29 +/- 0.01). Furthermore, just redward of Ly-alpha the flux is suppressed by a factor of three on the first night, but returns to expected levels by the fourth night. We propose that this is due to absorption by molecular hydrogen that was excited to rovibrational states by the GRB's prompt emission, but was then overtaken by the jet. Now that very high redshift GRBs have been shown to exist, and at least in this case the afterglow was very bright, observing programs that are designed to capitalize on this science will likely drive a new era of study of the early universe, using GRBs as probes., Submitted to Nature, 11 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX

The 2-m robotic Liverpool Telescope reacted promptly to the gamma-ray burst GRB 050502a discovered by INTEGRAL and started observing 3 min after the onset of the GRB. The automatic identification of a bright afterglow of r'~15.8 triggered for the first time an observation sequence in the BVr'i' filters during the first hour after a GRB. Observations continued for ~1 day using the RoboNet-1.0 network of 2-m robotic telescopes. The light curve in all filters can be described by a simple power law with index of 1.2 +/- 0.1. We find evidence for a bump rising at t~0.02 days in all filters. From the spectrum and the light curve we investigate different interpretative scenarios and we find possible evidence for a uniform circumburst medium with clumps in density, as in the case of GRB 021004. Other interpretations of such bumps, such as the effect of energy injection through refreshed shocks or the result of a variable energy profile, are less favored. Long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) accompany the deaths of some massive stars and hence, since massive stars are short lived, are a tracer of star formation activity. Given that GRBs are bright enough to be seen to very high redshifts, and detected even in dusty environments, they should therefore provide a powerful probe of the global star formation history of the universe. The potential of this approach can be investigated via submm photometry of GRB host galaxies. Submm luminosity also correlates with star formation rate, so the distribution of host galaxy submm fluxes should allow us to test the two methods for consistency. Here, we report new JCMT/SCUBA 850 micron measurements for 15 GRB hosts. Combining these data with results from previous studies we construct a sample of 21 hosts with 4 mJy) galaxies. Furthermore, the optical/infrared properties of the submm brightest GRB hosts are not typical of the galaxy population selected in submm surveys, although the sample size is still small. We present nine newly discovered globular clusters in the outer halo of M31, found by a semi-automated procedure from a INT Wide Field Camera survey of the region. We first discuss why the uncomfortable fine-tuning of the parameters of the Lambda-CDM cosmological model provides continuing, strong motivation to investigate Hubble's Constant. Then we review evidence from the HST Key Project that there is a significant scale error between raw Cepheid and Tully-Fisher distances. An analysis of mainly HST Distance Scale Key Project data shows a correlation between host galaxy metallicity and the rms scatter around the Cepheid P-L relation, which may support a recent suggestion that the P-L metallicity dependence is stronger than expected. If Cepheids do have a significant metallicity dependence then the Tully-Fisher scale error increases and the distances of the Virgo and Fornax clusters extend to more than 20Mpc, decreasing the value of Ho. Finally, if the Cepheids have a metallicity dependence then so do Type Ia Supernovae since the metallicity corrected Cepheid distances to eight galaxies with SNIa would then suggest that the SNIa peak luminosity is fainter in metal poor galaxies, with important implications for SNIa estimates of qo as well as Ho., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures, Latex, requires newpasp.sty(included), to appear in "A New Era in Cosmology", Eds. We present HST/STIS observations of ESO 184-G82, the host galaxy of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar Type Ic supernova SN1998bw. ESO 184-G82 is found to be an actively star forming SBc sub-luminous galaxy. We detect an object consistent with being a point source within the astrometric uncertainty of 0.018 arcseconds of the position of the supernova. The object is located inside a star-forming region and is at least one magnitude brighter than expected for the supernova based on a simple radioactive decay model. (Abridged). We present a sample of 77 optical afterglows (OAs) of Swift detected GRBs for which spectroscopic follow-up observations have been secured. We provide linelists and equivalent widths for all detected lines redward of Ly-alpha. We discuss to what extent the current sample of Swift bursts with OA spectroscopy is a biased subsample of all Swift detected GRBs. For that purpose we define an X-ray selected sample of Swift bursts with optimal conditions for ground-based follow up from the period March 2005 to September 2008; 146 bursts fulfill our sample criteria. We derive the redshift distribution for this sample and conclude that less than 19% of Swift bursts are at z>7. We compare the high energy properties for three sub-samples of bursts in the sample: i) bursts with redshifts measured from OA spectroscopy, ii) bursts with detected OA, but no OA-based redshift, and iii) bursts with no detection of the OA. The bursts in group i) have significantly less excess X-ray absorption than bursts in the other two groups. In addition, the fraction of dark bursts is 14% in group i), 38% in group ii) and > 39% in group iii). From this we conclude that the sample of GRBs with OA spectroscopy is not representative for all Swift bursts, most likely due to a bias against the most dusty sight-lines. Finally, we characterize GRB absorption systems as a class and compare them to QSO absorption systems, in particular DLAs. On average GRB absorbers are characterized by significantly stronger EWs for HI as well as for both low and high ionization metal lines than what is seen in intervening QSO absorbers. Based on the z>2 bursts in the sample we place a 95% confidence upper limit of 7.5% on the mean escape fraction of ionizing photons from star-forming galaxies., 175 pages, 14 figures.
