Star formation and stellar feedback are interlinked processes that redistribute energy and matter throughout galaxies. When young, massive stars form in spatially clustered environments, they create pockets of expanding gas termed superbubbles. As these processes play a critical role in shaping galaxy discs and regulating the baryon cycle, measuring the properties of superbubbles provides important input for galaxy evolution models. With wide coverage and high angular resolution (50-150 pc) of the PHANGS-ALMA $^{12}$CO (2-1) survey, we can now resolve and identify a statistically representative number of superbubbles with molecular gas in nearby galaxies. We identify superbubbles by requiring spatial correspondence between shells in CO with stellar populations identified in PHANGS-HST, and combine the properties of the stellar populations with CO to constrain feedback models and quantify their energetics. We visually identify 325 cavities across 18 PHANGS-ALMA galaxies, 88 of which have clear superbubble signatures (unbroken shells, central clusters, kinematic signatures of expansion). We measure their radii and expansion velocities using CO to dynamically derive their ages and the mechanical power driving the bubbles, which we use to compute the expected properties of the parent stellar populations driving the bubbles. We find consistency between the predicted and derived stellar ages and masses of the stellar populations if we use a supernova blast wave model that injects energy with a coupling efficiency of 10%, whereas continuous models fail to explain stellar ages we measure. Not only does this confirm molecular gas accurately traces superbubble properties, but it also provides key observational constraints for superbubble models. We present UVIT/Astrosat UV photometry of the RSG population of the Small Cloud galaxy (SMC). As RSGs are extremely faint in the far-UV, these observations directly probe potential companion stars. From a sample of 861 SMC RSGs, we find 88 have detections at far-UV wavelengths: a clear signature of binarity. Stellar parameters are determined for both components, which allows us to study - for the first time - the mass-ratio (q) distribution of RSG binary systems. We find a flat mass-ratio distribution best describes the observations up to M{RSG}~15 Msun. We account for our main observing bias (i.e. the limiting magnitude of the UVIT survey) to determine the intrinsic RSG binary fraction of 18.8+/-1.5 %, for mass-ratios in the range 0.3 < q < 1.0 and orbital periods approximately in the range 3 < log P[ days] < 8., IAU Symposium 361 contribution

The morphology of HII regions around young star clusters provides insight into the timescales and physical processes that clear a cluster's natal gas. We study ~700 young clusters (5Myr), consistent with the expected temporal evolution of HII regions and previous results. For the first time both H$��$ and far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations from an HI-selected sample are used to determine the dust-corrected star formation rate density (SFRD: $\dot��$) in the local Universe. Applying the two star formation rate indicators on 294 local galaxies we determine log($\dot��$$ _{H��}) = -1.68~^{+0.13}_{-0.05}$ [M$_{\odot} $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$ and log($\dot��_{FUV}$) $ = -1.71~^{+0.12}_{-0.13}$ [M$_\odot $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$. These values are derived from scaling H$��$ and FUV observations to the HI mass function. Galaxies were selected to uniformly sample the full HI mass (M$_{HI}$) range of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (M$_{HI} \sim10^{7}$ to $\sim10^{10.7}$ M$_{\odot}$). The approach leads to relatively larger sampling of dwarf galaxies compared to optically-selected surveys. The low HI mass, low luminosity and low surface brightness galaxy populations have, on average, lower H$��$/FUV flux ratios than the remaining galaxy populations, consistent with the earlier results of Meurer. The near-identical H$��$- and FUV-derived SFRD values arise with the low H$��$/FUV flux ratios of some galaxies being offset by enhanced H$��$ from the brightest and high mass galaxy populations. Our findings confirm the necessity to fully sample the HI mass range for a complete census of local star formation to include lower stellar mass galaxies which dominate the local Universe., 17 pages, 7 figures

Pan-STARRS1 has carried out a set of distinct synoptic imaging sky surveys including the $3\pi$ Steradian Survey and the Medium Deep Survey in 5 bands ($grizy_{P1}$). The mean 5$\sigma$ point source limiting sensitivities in the stacked 3$\pi$ Steradian Survey in $grizy_{P1}$ are (23.3, 23.2, 23.1, 22.3, 21.4) respectively. The upper bound on the systematic uncertainty in the photometric calibration across the sky is 7-12 millimag depending on the bandpass. The systematic uncertainty of the astrometric calibration using the Gaia frame comes from a comparison of the results with Gaia: the standard deviation of the mean and median residuals ($ \Delta ra, \Delta dec $) are (2.3, 1.7) milliarcsec, and (3.1, 4.8) milliarcsec respectively. The Pan-STARRS system and the design of the PS1 surveys are described and an overview of the resulting image and catalog data products and their basic characteristics are described together with a summary of important results. We summarize the main properties of the extended UV (XUV) emission found in roughly 30% of the nearby spiral galaxies observed by the GALEX satellite. Two different classes of XUV disks are identified, the Type 1 XUV disks where significant, structured UV-bright features are found beyond the "classical" azimuthally-averaged star-formation threshold, and the Type 2 XUV disks, which are characterized by very extended (seven times the area where most of the stellar mass is found), blue [(FUV-K), 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of "The Formation and Evolution of Galaxy Disks", Rome 2007, organized by the Vatican Observatory, editors J. We present color-magnitude diagrams of the open cluster NGC 2420, obtained from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) ultraviolet images in FUV and NUV bands and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) u,g,r,i,z photometry. Our goal is to search for and characterize hot evolved stars and peculiar objects in this open cluster, as part of a larger project aimed to study a number of open clusters in the Milky Way with GALEX and ground-based data.

We have explored the role environmental factors play in determining characteristics of young stellar objects in nearby dwarf irregular and Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies. Star clusters are characterized by concentrations, masses, and formation rates, OB associations by mass and mass surface density, O stars by their numbers and near-ultraviolet absolute magnitudes, and HII regions by Halpha surface brightnesses. These characteristics are compared to surrounding galactic pressure, stellar mass density, HI surface density, and star formation rate surface density. We find no trend of cluster characteristics with environmental properties, implying that larger scale effects are more important in determining cluster characteristics or that rapid dynamical evolution erases memory of the initial conditions. On the other hand, the most massive OB associations are found at higher pressure and HI surface density, and there is a trend of higher HII region Halpha surface brightness with higher pressure, suggesting that a higher concentration of massive stars and gas are found preferentially in regions of higher pressure. At low pressures we find massive stars but not bound clusters and OB associations. We do not find evidence for an increase of cluster formation efficiency as a function of star formation rate density. However, there is an increase in the ratio of the number of clusters to number of O stars with pressure, perhaps reflecting an increase in clustering properties with star formation rate., Comment: 32 pages, 28 figures, published in 2018, AJ, 156, 21
