Let $X$ be a ball Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. Let $\Omega$ be a Lipschitz function on the unit sphere of ${\mathbb R}^n$,which is homogeneous of degree zero and has mean value zero, and let $T_\Omega$ be the convolutional singular integral operator with kernel $\Omega(\cdot)/|\cdot|^n$. In this article, under the assumption that the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator $\mathcal{M}$ is bounded on both $X$ and its associated space, the authors prove that the commutator $[b,T_\Omega]$ is compact on $X$ if and only if $b\in{\rm CMO}({\mathbb R}^n)$. To achieve this, the authors mainly employ three key tools: some elaborate estimates, given in this article, on the norm in $X$ of the commutators and the characteristic functions of some measurable subset,which are implied by the assumed boundedness of ${\mathcal M}$ on $X$ and its associated space as well as the geometry of $\mathbb R^n$; the complete John--Nirenberg inequality in $X$ obtained by Y. Sawano et al.; the generalized Fr\'{e}chet--Kolmogorov theorem on $X$ also established in this article. All these results have a wide range of applications. Consider a bounded strongly pseudo-convex domain $\Omega $ with a smooth boundary in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Let $\mathcal{T}$ be the Toeplitz algebra on the Bergman space $L^2_a(\Omega )$. That is, $\mathcal{T}$ is the $C^\ast $-algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators $\{T_f : f \in L^\infty (\Omega )\}$. Extending previous work in the special case of the unit ball, we show that on any such $\Omega $, $\mathcal{T}$ and $\{T_f : f \in {\text{VO}}_{\text{bdd}}\} + \mathcal{K}$ are essential commutants of each other. We analyze human poses and motion by introducing three sequences of easily calculated surface descriptors that are invariant under reparametrizations and Euclidean transformations. These descriptors are obtained by associating to each finitely-triangulated surface two functions on the unit sphere: for each unit vector u we compute the weighted area of the projection of the surface onto the plane orthogonal to u and the length of its projection onto the line spanned by u . The L 2 norms and inner products of the projections of these functions onto the space of spherical harmonics of order k provide us with three sequences of Euclidean and reparametrization invariants of the surface. The use of these invariants reduces the comparison of 3D+time surface representations to the comparison of polygonal curves in R n . The experimental results on the FAUST and CVSSP3D artificial datasets are promising. Moreover, a slight modification of our method yields good results on the noisy CVSSP3D real dataset.

Herein, we address the expectations of frame potentials of three types of determinantal point processes(DPPs) on the d-dimensional unit sphere: (i) spherical ensembles on the 2-dimensional unit sphere; (ii) harmonic ensembles on the d-dimensional unit sphere and (iii) jittered sampling point processes on the d-dimensional unit sphere. The random point configurations generated by such DPPs converge more rapidly towards finite unit norm tight frames(FUNTFs) than the Poisson point processes on the unit sphere.

Random operators constitute fundamental building blocks of models of complex systems yet are far from fully understood. Here, we explain an asymmetry emerging upon repeating identical isotropic (uniformly random) operations. Specifically, in two dimensions, repeating an isotropic rotation twice maps a given point on the two-dimensional unit sphere (the unit circle) uniformly at random to any point on the unit sphere, reflecting a statistical symmetry as expected. In contrast, in three and higher dimensions, a point is mapped more often closer to the original point than a uniform distribution predicts. Curiously, in the limit of the dimension $d \rightarrow \infty$, a symmetric distribution is approached again. We intuitively explain the emergence of this asymmetry and why it disappears in higher dimensions by disentangling isotropic rotations into a sequence of partial actions. Random Fourier Features (RFF) demonstrate wellappreciated performance in kernel approximation for largescale situations but restrict kernels to be stationary and positive definite. And for non-stationary kernels, the corresponding RFF could be converted to that for stationary indefinite kernels when the inputs are restricted to the unit sphere. Numerous methods provide accessible ways to approximate stationary but indefinite kernels. However, they are either biased or possess large variance. In this article, we propose the generalized orthogonal random features, an unbiased estimation with lower variance.Experimental results on various datasets and kernels verify that our algorithm achieves lower variance and approximation error compared with the existing kernel approximation methods. We prove the concavity of classical solutions to a wide class of degenerate elliptic differential equations on strictly convex domains of the unit sphere. Starting with a finite point set $X \subset \mathbf{R}^d$, the peeling process repeatedly removes the set of the vertices of the convex hull of the current set. The number of peeling steps required to completely remove $X$ is called the layer number of $X$, denoted by $L(X)$. In the article, we study the layer number of evenly distributed families of point sets contained in $B^d$, the $d$-dimensional unit ball. These sets consist of points in $B^d$ whose minimal distance is asymptotically as large as possible. We show that for a set $X$ belonging to an evenly distributed family, $L(X) \geq \Omega(|X|^{1/d})$ holds, with the bound being asymptotically sharp. On the other hand, building on earlier results, we prove that $L(X)\leq O(|X|^{2/d})$ holds for $d\geq 2$, which improves greatly on the current upper bound of $O(|X|^{(d+1)/2d})$ for $d \geq 3$. In this short note, we formulate three problems relating to nonnegative scalar curvature (NNSC) fill-ins. Loosely speaking, the first two problems focus on: When are $(n-1)$-dimensional Bartnik data $\big(\Sigma_i ^{n-1}, \gamma_i, H_i\big)$, $i=1,2$, NNSC-cobordant? (i.e., there is an $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold $\big(\Omega^n, g\big)$ with scalar curvature $R(g)\geq 0$ and the boundary $\partial \Omega=\Sigma_{1} \cup \Sigma_{2}$ such that $\gamma_i$ is the metric on $\Sigma_i ^{n-1}$ induced by $g$, and $H_i$ is the mean curvature of $\Sigma_i$ in $\big(\Omega^n, g\big)$). If $\big(\mathbb{S}^{n-1},\gamma_{\rm std},0\big)$ is positive scalar curvature (PSC) cobordant to $\big(\Sigma_1 ^{n-1}, \gamma_1, H_1\big)$, where $\big(\mathbb{S}^{n-1}, \gamma_{\rm std}\big)$ denotes the standard round unit sphere then $\big(\Sigma_1 ^{n-1}, \gamma_1, H_1\big)$ admits an NNSC fill-in. Just as Gromov's conjecture is connected with positive mass theorem, our problems are connected with Penrose inequality, at least in the case of $n=3$. Our third problem is on $\Lambda\big(\Sigma^{n-1}, \gamma\big)$ defined below.

In this work, we provide an estimate of the Morse index of radially symmetric sign changing bounded weak solutions $u$ to the semilinear fractional Dirichlet problem $$ (-\Delta)^su = f(u)\qquad \text{ in $\mathcal{B}$},\qquad \qquad u = 0\qquad \text{in $\quad\mathbb{R}^{N}\setminus \mathcal{B}$,} $$ where $s\in(0,1)$, $\mathcal{B}\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is the unit ball centred at zero and the nonlinearity $f$ is of class $C^1$. We prove that for $s\in(1/2,1)$ any radially symmetric sign changing solution of the above problem has a Morse index greater than or equal to $N+1$. If $s\in (0,1/2],$ the same conclusion holds under additional assumption on $f$. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem for the operator $(-\Delta)^s$ in $\mathcal{B}$ for all $s\in (0,1)$, and it implies that eigenfunctions corresponding to the second Dirichlet eigenvalue in $\mathcal{B}$ are antisymmetric. We follow the idea of Wang [ 21 ] to show the existence of global weak solutions to the Cauchy problems of Landau-Lifshtiz type equations and related heat flows from a \begin{document}$ n $\end{document} -dimensional Euclidean domain \begin{document}$ \Omega $\end{document} or a \begin{document}$ n $\end{document} -dimensional closed Riemannian manifold \begin{document}$ M $\end{document} into a 2-dimensional unit sphere \begin{document}$ \mathbb{S}^{2} $\end{document} . Our conclusions extend a series of related results obtained in the previous literature.

In this article we consider the existence of positive singular solutions on bounded domains and also classical solutions on exterior domains. In this paper, we study the Bergman metric of a finite ball quotient $\mathbb{B}^n/\Gamma$, where $\Gamma \subseteq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{B}^n)$ is a finite, fixed point free, abelian group. We prove that this metric is K\"ahler--Einstein if and only if $\Gamma$ is trivial, i.e., when the ball quotient $\mathbb{B}^n/\Gamma$ is the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ itself. As a consequence, we establish a characterization of the unit ball among normal Stein spaces with isolated singularities and abelian fundamental groups in terms of the existence of a Bergman-Einstein metric., Comment: 21 pages

An integral representation of the intertwining operator for the Dunkl operators associated with symmetric groups is derived for the class of functions of a single component. The expression provides a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels of h -harmonics associated with symmetric groups when one of the components is a coordinate vector. The latter allows us to establish a sharp result for the Cesaro summability of h -harmonic series on the unit sphere.

If a $$(d+1)$$ -smooth function f(x) on $$[-1,1]$$ , with $$\mathrm{max\,}_{[-1,1]}|f(x)|\ge 1,$$ has $$d+1$$ or more distinct zeroes on $$[-1,1]$$ , then $$\mathrm{max\,}_{[-1,1]}|f^{(d+1)}(x)|\ge 2^{-d-1}(d+1)!$$ . This follows from the polynomial interpolation of f at its zeroes, with Lagrange’s remainder formula. This is one of the simplest examples of what we call “smooth rigidity”: certain geometric properties of zero sets of smooth functions f imply explicit lower bounds on the high-order derivatives of f. In dimensions greater than one, the powerful one-dimension tools such as Lagrange’s remainder formula, and divided finite differences, are not directly applicable. Still, the result above implies, via line sections, rather strong restrictions on zeroes of smooth functions of several variables (Yomdin in Proc AMS 90(4):538–542, 1984). In the present paper we study the geometry of zero sets of smooth functions, and significantly extend the results of Yomdin (1984), including into consideration, in particular, finite zero sets (for which the line sections usually do not work). Our main goal is to develop a pure multi-dimensional approach to smooth rigidity, based on polynomial Remez-type inequalities (which compare the maxima of a polynomial on the unit ball, and on its subset). Very informally, one of our main results is that the smooth rigidity of a zeroes set Z is approximately the reciprocal Remez constant of Z.

The concept of typical and weighted typical spherical faces for tessellations of the $d$-dimensional unit sphere, generated by $n$ independent random great hyperspheres distributed according to a non-degenerate directional distribution, is introduced and studied. Probabilistic interpretations for such spherical faces are given and their directional distributions are determined. Explicit formulas for the expected $f$-vector, the expected spherical Querma\ss integrals and the expected spherical intrinsic volumes are found in the isotropic case. Their limiting behaviour as $n\to\infty$ is discussed and compared to the corresponding notions and results in the Euclidean case. The expected statistical dimension and a problem related to intersection probabilities of spherical random polytopes is investigated.

In this note, we construct an algorithm that, on input of a description of a structurally stable planar dynamical flow $f$ defined on the closed unit disk, outputs the exact number of the (hyperbolic) equilibrium points and their locations with arbitrary accuracy. By arbitrary accuracy it is meant that any accuracy required by the input can be achieved. The algorithm can be further extended to a root-finding algorithm that computes the exact number of zeros as well the location of each zero of a continuously differentiable function $f$ defined on the closed unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, provided that the Jacobian of $f$ is invertible at each zero of $f$; moreover, the computation is uniform in $f$. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This article focuses on the problem of analytically determining the optimal placement of five points on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ so that the surface area of the convex hull of the points is maximized. It is shown that the optimal polyhedron has a trigonal bipyramidal structure with two vertices placed at the north and south poles and the other three vertices forming an equilateral triangle inscribed in the equator. This result confirms a conjecture of Akkiraju, who conducted a numerical search for the maximizer. As an application to crystallography, the surface area discrepancy is considered as a measure of distortion between an observed coordination polyhedron and an ideal one. We use the Suita conjecture (now a theorem) to prove that for any domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{C}$ its Bergman kernel $K(\cdot, \cdot)$ satisfies $K(z_0, z_0) = \hbox{Volume}(\Omega)^{-1}$ for some $z_0 \in \Omega$ if and only if $\Omega$ is either a disk minus a (possibly empty) closed polar set or $\mathbb{C}$ minus a (possibly empty) closed polar set. When $\Omega$ is bounded with $C^{\infty}$-boundary, we provide a simple proof of this using the zero set of the Szeg\"o kernel. We study the quantum geometry of the fuzzy sphere defined as the angular momentum algebra $[x_i,x_j]=2\imath\lambda_p \epsilon_{ijk}x_k$ modulo setting $\sum_i x_i^2$ to a constant, using a recently introduced 3D rotationally invariant differential structure. Metrics are given by symmetric $3 \times 3$ matrices $g$ and we show that for each metric there is a unique quantum Levi-Civita connection with constant coefficients, with scalar curvature $ \frac{1}{2}({\rm Tr}(g^2)-\frac{1}{2}{\rm Tr}(g)^2)/\det(g)$. Further, we show that the numerical index of the ideal of compact operators or the ideal of weakly compact operators is less than or equal to the numerical index of the dual of the domain, and this result provides interesting examples. We also show that the numerical index of a projective or injective tensor product of Banach spaces is less than or equal to the numerical index of any of the factors. Finally, we show that if a projective tensor product of two Banach spaces has the Daugavet property and the unit ball of one of the factor is slicely countably determined or its dual contains a point of Fréchet differentiability of the norm, then the other factor inherits the Daugavet property. If an injective tensor product of two Banach spaces has the Daugavet property and one of the factors contains a point of Fréchet differentiability of the norm, then the other factor has the Daugavet property.

Suppose given an holomorphic and Hamiltonian action of a compact torus $T$ on a polarized Hodge manifold $M$. Assume that the action lifts to the quantizing line bundle, so that there is an induced unitary representation of $T$ on the associated Hardy space. If in addition the moment map is nowhere zero, for each weight $\boldsymbol{\nu}$ the $\boldsymbol{\nu}$-th isotypical component in the Hardy space of the polarization is finite-dimensional. Assuming that the moment map is transverse to the ray through $\boldsymbol{\nu}$, we give a gometric interpretation of the isotypical components associated to the weights $k\,\boldsymbol{\nu}$, $k\rightarrow +\infty$, in terms of certain polarized orbifolds associated to the Hamiltonian action and the weight. These orbifolds are generally not reductions of $M$ in the usual sense, but arise rather as quotients of certain loci in the unit circle bundle of the polarization; this construction generalizes the one of weighted projective spaces as quotients of the unit sphere, viewed as the domain of the Hopf map.

We show some new results about tilings in Banach spaces. A tiling of a Banach space $X$ is a covering by closed sets with non-empty interior so that they have pairwise disjoint interiors. If moreover the tiles have inner radii uniformly bounded from below, and outer radii uniformly bounded from above, we say that the tiling is normal. In 2010 Preiss constructed a convex normal tiling of the separable Hilbert space. For Banach spaces with Schauder basis we will show that Preiss' result is still true with starshaped tiles instead of convex ones. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the fractional Hardy-H\'enon equation $$ (-\Delta)^\sigma u = |x|^\alpha u^p ~~~~~~~~~~~ in ~~ B_1 \backslash \{0\} $$ with an isolated singularity at the origin, where $\sigma \in (0, 1)$ and the punctured unit ball $B_1 \backslash \{0\} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n \geq 2$. When $-2\sigma < \alpha < 2\sigma$ and $\frac{n+\alpha}{n-2\sigma} < p < \frac{n+2\sigma}{n-2\sigma}$, we give a classification of isolated singularities of positive solutions, and in particular, this implies sharp blow up estimates of singular solutions. Further, we describe the precise asymptotic behavior of solutions near the singularity. More generally, we classify isolated boundary singularities and describe the precise asymptotic behavior of singular solutions for a relevant degenerate elliptic equation with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition. These results parallel those known for the Laplacian counterpart proved by Gidas and Spruck (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 34: 525-598, 1981), but the methods are very different, since the ODEs analysis is a missing ingredient in the fractional case. Our proofs are based on a monotonicity formula, combined with blow up (down) arguments, Kelvin transformation and uniqueness of solutions of related degenerate equations on $\mathbb{S}^{n}_+$. We prove that every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of a rank-2 Cartan factor C onto the unit sphere of a real Banach space Y, admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry from C onto Y. The conclusion also covers the case in which C is a spin factor. This result closes an open problem and, combined with the conclusion in a previous paper, allows us to establish that every $$\hbox {JBW}^*$$ -triple M satisfies the Mazur–Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from its unit sphere onto the unit sphere of a arbitrary real Banach space Y admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry from M onto Y.

We study two natural preorders on the set of tripotents in a JB$^*$-triple defined in terms of their Peirce decomposition and weaker than the standard partial order. We further introduce and investigate the notion of finiteness for tripotents in JBW$^*$-triples which is a natural generalization of finiteness for projections in von Neumann algebras. We analyze the preorders in detail using the standard representation of JBW$^*$-triples. We also provide a refined version of this representation - in particular a decomposition of any JBW$^*$-triple into its finite and properly infinite parts. Since a JBW$^*$-algebra is finite if and only if the extreme points of its unit ball are just unitaries, our notion of finiteness differs from the concept of modularity widely used in Jordan structures so far. This article aims to study the Coulomb gas model over the $d$-dimensional $p$-adic space. We establish the existence of equilibria measures and the $\Gamma$-limit for the Coulomb energy functional when the number of configurations tends to infinity. For a cloud of charged particles confined into the unit ball, we compute the equilibrium measure and the minimum of its Coulomb energy functional. In the $p$-adic setting the Coulomb energy is the continuum limit of the minus a hierarchical Hamiltonian attached to a spin glass model with a $p$-adic coupling., Comment: 18 pages

Louis Poinsot has shown in 1854 that the motion of a rigid body, with one of its points fixed, can be described as the rolling without slipping of one cone, the 'body cone', along another, the 'space cone', with their common vertex at the fixed point. This description has been further refined by the second author in 1996, relating the geodesic curvatures of the spherical curves formed by intersecting the cones with the unit sphere in Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^3$, thus enabling a reconstruction of the motion of the body from knowledge of the space cone together with the (time dependent) magnitude of the angular velocity vector. In this article we show that a similar description exists for a time dependent family of unimodular $ 2 \times 2 $ matrices in terms of rolling cones in 3-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$ and the associated 'pseudo spherical' curves, in either the hyperbolic plane $H^2$ or its Lorentzian analog $H^{1,1}$. We have obtained explicit integral expressions for the sums of inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a unit sphere, in presence of an arbitrary variable density. The exact expressions for the sum rules are obtained by properly "renormalizing" the series, excluding the divergent contribution of the vanishing lowest eigenvalue. For a non--trivial example of a variable density we have applied our formulas to calculate the exact sum rules of order two and three, and we have verified these results calculating the sum rules numerically using the eigenvalues obtained with the Rayleigh-Ritz method., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures

We prove that extremal points consist of pairs of measures concentrated on absolutely continuous curves which are characteristics of the continuity equation. Then, we apply this result to provide a representation formula for sparse solutions of dynamic inverse problems with finite‐dimensional data and optimal‐transport based regularization.

Consensus on nonlinear spaces is of use in many control applications. This paper proposes a gradient descent flow algorithm for consensus on hypersurfaces. We show that if an inequality holds, then the system converges for almost all initial conditions and all connected graphs. The inequality involves the hypersurface Gauss map and the gradient and Hessian of the implicit equation. Moreover, for the inequality to hold, it is necessary that the manifold is the boundary of a convex set. The literature already contains an algorithm for consensus on hypersurfaces. That algorithm on any ellipsoid is equivalent to our algorithm on the unit sphere. In particular, that algorithm achieves almost global synchronization on ellipsoids. These findings suggest that strong convergence results for consensus seeking gradient descent flows may be established on manifolds that are the boundaries of convex sets.

The Fisher-Bingham distribution ($\mathrm{FB}_8$) is an eight-parameter family of probability density functions (PDF) on $S^2$ that, under certain conditions, reduce to spherical analogues of bivariate normal PDFs. Due to difficulties in computing its overall normalization constant, applications have been mainly restricted to subclasses of $\mathrm{FB}_8$, such as the Kent ($\mathrm{FB}_5$) or von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distributions. However, these subclasses often do not adequately describe directional data that are not symmetric along great circles. The normalizing constant of $\mathrm{FB}_8$ can be numerically integrated, and recently Kume and Sei showed that it can be computed using an adjusted holonomic gradient method. Both approaches, however, can be computationally expensive. In this paper, I show that the normalization of $\mathrm{FB}_8$ can be expressed as an infinite sum consisting of hypergeometric functions, similar to that of the $\mathrm{FB}_5$. This allows the normalization to be computed under summation with adequate stopping conditions. I then fit the $\mathrm{FB}_8$ to a synthetic dataset using a maximum-likelihood approach and show its improvements over a fit with the more restrictive $\mathrm{FB}_5$ distribution., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, code available at https://github.com/tianluyuan/sphere

In this paper, the main aim is to discuss the existence of the extreme points and support points of families of harmonic Bloch mappings and little harmonic Bloch mappings. First, in terms of the Bloch unit-valued set, we prove a necessary condition for a harmonic Bloch mapping (resp. a little harmonic Bloch mapping) to be an extreme point of the unit ball of the normalized harmonic Bloch spaces (resp. the normalized little harmonic Bloch spaces) in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$. Then we show that a harmonic Bloch mapping $f$ is a support point of the unit ball of the normalized harmonic Bloch spaces in $\mathbb{D}$ if and only if the Bloch unit-valued set of $f$ is not empty. We develop a nondirect product discrete variable representation (npDVR) for treating quantum dynamical problems which involve nonseparable angular variables. The npDVR basis is constructed on spherical functions orthogonalized on the grids of the Lebedev or Popov 2D quadratures for the unit sphere instead of the direct product of 1D quadrature rules. We compare our computational scheme with the old one that used the product of 1D Gaussian quadratures in terms of their convergence and efficiency by calculating, as an example, the spectrum of a hydrogen atom in the magnetic and electric fields arbitrarily oriented to one another. The use of the npDVR based on the Lebedev or Popov 2D quadratures substantially accelerates the convergence of the computational scheme. Moreover, we get the fastest convergence with the npDVR based on the Popov quadratures, which has the largest efficiency coefficient., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables

This paper illustrates a computational approach to Culler-Morgan-Shalen theory using ideal triangulations, spun-normal surfaces and tropical geometry. Certain affine algebraic sets associated to the Whitehead link complement as well as their logarithmic limit sets are computed. The projective solution space of spun-normal surface theory is related to the space of incompressible surfaces and to the unit ball of the Thurston norm. It is shown that all boundary curves of the Whitehead link complement are strongly detected by its character variety. The specific results obtained can be used to study the geometry and topology of the Whitehead link complement and its Dehn surgeries. The typical cell of a Voronoi tessellation generated by $$n+1$$ n + 1 uniformly distributed random points on the d-dimensional unit sphere $$\mathbb {S}^d$$ S d is studied. Its f-vector is identified in distribution with the f-vector of a beta’ polytope generated by n random points in $$\mathbb {R}^d$$ R d . Explicit formulas for the expected f-vector are provided for any d and the low-dimensional cases $$d\in \{2,3,4\}$$ d ∈ { 2 , 3 , 4 } are studied separately. We determine the order of magnitude of the $n$th $\ell_p$-polarization constant of the unit sphere $S^{d-1}$ for every $n,d \geq 1$ and $p>0$.
