Motivated by the need to communicate short control messages in 5G and beyond, this paper carefully designs codes for cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided list decoding of tail-biting convolutional codes (TBCCs) and polar codes. Both codes send a 32-bit message using an 11-bit CRC and 512 transmitted bits. We aim to provide a careful, fair comparison of the error performance and decoding complexity of polar and TBCC techniques for a specific case. Specifically, a TBCC is designed to match the rate of a (512, 43) polar code, and optimal 11-bit CRCs for both codes are designed. The paper examines the distance spectra of the polar and TBCC codes, illuminating the different distance structures for the two code types. We consider both adaptive and non-adaptive CRC-aided list decoding schemes. For polar codes, an adaptive decoder must start with a larger list size to avoid an error floor. For rate-32/512 codes with an 11-bit CRC, the optimized CRC-TBCC design achieves a lower total failure rate than the optimized CRC-polar design. Simulations showed that the optimized CRC-TBCC design achieved significantly higher throughput than the optimized CRC-polar design, so that the TBCC solution achieved a lower total failure rate while requiring less computational complexity., Comment: First revision submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communications

Incremental redundancy with ACK/NACK feedback produces a variable-length stop-feedback (VLSF) code constrained to have $m$ decoding times, with an ACK/NACK feedback to the transmitter at each decoding time. This paper focuses on the numerical evaluation of the maximal achievable rate of random VLSF codes as a function of $m$ for the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel, binary symmetric channel, and binary erasure channel (BEC). Leveraging Edgeworth and Petrov expansions, we develop tight approximations to the tail probability of length-$n$ cumulative information density that are accurate for any blocklength $n$. We reduce Yavas et al.'s non-asymptotic achievability bound on VLSF codes with $m$ decoding times to an integer program of minimizing the upper bound on the average blocklength subject to the average error probability, minimum gap, and integer constraints. We develop two distinct methods to solve this program. Numerical evaluations show that Polyanskiy's achievability bound for VLSF codes, which assumes $m = \infty$, can be approached with a small $m$ for all three channels. For BEC, we consider systematic transmission followed by random linear fountain coding. This allows us to obtain a new achievability bound stronger than a previous bound and new VLSF codes whose rate further outperforms Polyanskiy's bound., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures; submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communications. We extend earlier work on the design of convolutional code-specific CRC codes to $Q$-ary alphabets, with an eye toward $Q$-ary orthogonal signaling. Starting with distance-spectrum optimal, zero-terminated, $Q$-ary convolutional codes, we design $Q$-ary CRC codes so that the CRC/convolutional concatenation is distance-spectrum optimal. The $Q$-ary code symbols are mapped to a $Q$-ary orthogonal signal set and sent over an AWGN channel with noncoherent reception. We focus on $Q = 4$, rate-1/2 convolutional codes in our designs. The random coding union bound and normal approximation are used in earlier works as benchmarks for performance for distance-spectrum optimal convolutional codes. We derive a saddlepoint approximation of the random coding union bound for the coded noncoherent signaling channel, as well as a normal approximation for this channel, and compare the performance of our codes to these limits. This paper studies the joint design of optimal convolutional codes (CCs) and CRC codes when serial list Viterbi algorithm (S-LVA) is employed in order to achieve the target frame error rate (FER). We first analyze the S-LVA performance with respect to SNR and list size, repsectively, and prove the convergence of the expected number of decoding attempts when SNR goes to the extreme. We then propose the coded channel capacity as the criterion to jointly design optimal CC-CRC pair and optimal list size and show that the optimal list size of S-LVA is always the cardinality of all possible CCs. With the maximum list size, we choose the design metric of optimal CC-CRC pair as the SNR gap to random coding union (RCU) bound and the optimal CC-CRC pair is the one that achieves a target SNR gap with the least complexity. A message composed of packets is transmitted using erasure and channel coding over a fading channel with no feedback. For this scenario, the paper explores the trade-off between the redundancies allocated to the packet-level erasure code and the channel code, along with an objective of a low probability of failure to recover the message. To this end, we consider a fading model that we term proportional-diversity block fading (PD block fading). For a fixed overall code rate and transmit power, we formulate an optimization problem to numerically find the optimal channel-coding rate (and thus the optimal erasure-coding rate) that minimizes the probability of failure for various approximations of the problem. Furthermore, an interpretation of the results from an incremental redundancy point of view shows how rate-compatibility affects the possible trajectories of the failure probability as a function of the overall code rate. Our numerical results suggest that an optimal, rateless, hybrid coding scheme for a single-user wireless system over the PD block-fading channel should have the rate of the erasure code approach one., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This paper presents a general approach for optimizing the number of symbols in increments (packets of incremental redundancy) in a feedback communication system with a limited number of increments. This approach is based on a tight normal approximation on the rate for successful decoding. Applying this approach to a variety of feedback systems using non-binary (NB) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes shows that greater than 90% of capacity can be achieved with average blocklengths fewer than 500 transmitted bits. One result is that the performance with ten increments closely approaches the performance with an infinite number of increments. The paper focuses on binary- input additive-white Gaussian noise (BI-AWGN) channels but also demonstrates that the normal approximation works well on examples of fading channels as well as high-SNR AWGN channels that require larger QAM constellations. The paper explores both variable-length feedback codes with termination (VLFT) and the more practical variable length feedback (VLF) codes without termination that require no assumption of noiseless transmitter confirmation. For VLF we consider both a two-phase scheme and CRC-based scheme.

This paper considers the problem of transferring a file from one source node to multiple receivers in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. The objective is to minimize the weighted sum download time (WSDT) for the one-to-many file transfer. Previous work has shown that, given an order at which the receivers finish downloading, the minimum WSD can be solved in polynomial time by convex optimization, and can be achieved by linear network coding, assuming that node uplinks are the only bottleneck in the network. This paper, however, considers heterogeneous peers with both uplink and downlink bandwidth constraints specified. The static scenario is a file-transfer scheme in which the network resource allocation remains static until all receivers finish downloading. This paper first shows that the static scenario may be optimized in polynomial time by convex optimization, and the associated optimal static WSD can be achieved by linear network coding. This paper then presented a lower bound to the minimum WSDT that is easily computed and turns out to be tight across a wide range of parameterizations of the problem. This paper also proposes a static routing-based scheme and a static rateless-coding-based scheme which have almost-optimal empirical performances. The dynamic scenario is a file-transfer scheme which can re-allocate the network resource during the file transfer. We consider a communication network with a single source that has a set of messages and two terminals where each terminal is interested in an arbitrary subset of messages at the source. A tight capacity region for this problem is demonstrated. Consider a memoryless degraded broadcast channel (DBC) in which the channel output is a single-letter function of the channel input and the channel noise. As examples, for the Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) this single-letter function is regular Euclidian addition and for the binary-symmetric BC this single-letter function is Galois-Field-two addition. This paper identifies several classes of discrete memoryless DBCs for which a relatively simple encoding scheme, which we call natural encoding, achieves capacity. Natural Encoding (NE) combines symbols from independent codebooks (one for each receiver) using the same single-letter function that adds distortion to the channel. The alphabet size of each NE codebook is bounded by that of the channel input. Inspired by Witsenhausen and Wyner, this paper defines the conditional entropy bound function $F^*$, studies its properties, and applies them to show that NE achieves the boundary of the capacity region for the multi-receiver broadcast Z channel. Then, this paper defines the input-symmetric DBC, introduces permutation encoding for the input-symmetric DBC, and proves its optimality. Because it is a special case of permutation encoding, NE is capacity achieving for the two-receiver group-operation DBC. Combining the broadcast Z channel and group-operation DBC results yields a proof that NE is also optimal for the discrete multiplication DBC. This paper proposes an analytical framework for peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and introduces schemes for building P2P networks to approach the minimum weighted average download time (WADT). In the considered P2P framework, the server, which has the information of all the download bandwidths and upload bandwidths of the peers, minimizes the weighted average download time by determining the optimal transmission rate from the server to the peers and from the peers to the other peers. This paper first defines the static P2P network, the hierarchical P2P network and the strictly hierarchical P2P network. Any static P2P network can be decomposed into an equivalent network of sub-peers that is strictly hierarchical. This paper shows that convex optimization can minimize the WADT for P2P networks by equivalently minimizing the WADT for strictly hierarchical networks of sub-peers. This paper then gives an upper bound for minimizing WADT by constructing a hierarchical P2P network, and lower bound by weakening the constraints of the convex problem. Both the upper bound and the lower bound are very tight. This paper also provides several suboptimal solutions for minimizing the WADT for strictly hierarchical networks, in which peer selection algorithms and chunk selection algorithm can be locally designed., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures
