In monolayers of the semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the electron-hole exchange interaction splits the exciton dispersion into a massive transverse branch, and a longitudinal branch that has very light or even zero mass depending on the form of screened Coulomb interaction. The group velocity of the longitudinal branch is sensitive to the strength of electron-hole exchange, which can be engineered through the dielectric environment. Here we show that dielectric patterning of the substrate can be exploited to realize waveguide of the exciton in the longitudinal branch in a homogeneous monolayer, leaving the massive transverse branch unaffected. At a lateral interface of different dielectric constant in the substrate, the transmission and reflection of exciton in the longitudinal branch obey the Snell-Descartes law of optical system, and total reflection can be exploited to realize excitonic waveguide using two parallel interfaces. The same dielectric pattern of the substrate appears to be completely transparent for the massive transverse branch exciton, which has no interface scattering. When the monolayer is placed on a one-dimensional dielectric superlattice, the dispersion of the longitudinal branch is strongly renormalized, and the wavefunctions exhibit one-dimensional features, confined to either the low-dielectric or high-dielectric regions. Reinforcement learning has been widely used in many problems, including quantum control of qubits. However, such problems can, at the same time, be solved by traditional, non-machine-learning methods, such as stochastic gradient descent and Krotov algorithms, and it remains unclear which one is most suitable when the control has specific constraints. In this work, we perform a comparative study on the efficacy of three reinforcement learning algorithms: tabular Q-learning, deep Q-learning, and policy gradient, as well as two non-machine-learning methods: stochastic gradient descent and Krotov algorithms, in the problem of preparing a desired quantum state. We found that overall, the deep Q-learning and policy gradient algorithms outperform others when the problem is discretized, e.g. allowing discrete values of control, and when the problem scales up. The reinforcement learning algorithms can also adaptively reduce the complexity of the control sequences, shortening the operation time and improving the fidelity. We present a theoretical proposal of a tunable charge qubit, hosted in triple quantum dots. The manipulation is solely performed by changing the heights of the two potential barriers between the three dots, while the energy of all three dots are fixed. We have found that when the relative height of the two barriers are changed, the direction of the axis of rotation in performing single-qubit gates can be varied. On the other hand, the corresponding rotation speed can be tuned by raising or lowering the two barriers at the same time. Our proposal therefore allows for tunability of both the rotation axis and rotating speed for a charge qubit via all-electrical control, which may facilitate realization of quantum algorithms in these devices., Comment: 8+ pages, 9 figures

We present a set of experimentally feasible pulse sequences that implement any single-qubit gate on a singlet-triplet spin qubit and demonstrate that these new sequences are up to three times faster than existing sequences in the literature. We show that these sequences can be extended to incorporate built-in dynamical error correction, yielding gates that are robust to both charge and magnetic field noise and up to twice as fast as previous dynamically corrected gate schemes. We present a thorough comparison of the performance of our new sequences with that of several existing ones using randomized benchmarking, considering both quasistatic and $1/f^\alpha$ noise models. We provide our results both as a function of evolution time and as a function of the number of gates, which respectively yield both an effective coherence time and an estimate of the number of gates that can be performed within this coherence time. We determine which set of pulse sequences gives the best results for a wide range of noise strengths and power spectra. Overall, we find that the traditional, slower sequences perform best when there is no field noise or when the noise contains significant high-frequency components; otherwise, our new, fast sequences exhibit the best performance., Comment: 29 pages, 29 figures; submitted to Phys. It has been recently demonstrated that a singlet-triplet spin qubit in semiconductor double quantum dots can be controlled by changing the height of the potential barrier between the two dots ("barrier control"), which has led to a considerable reduction of charge noises as compared to the traditional tilt control method. In this paper we show, through a molecular-orbital-theoretic calculation of double quantum dots influenced by a charged impurity, that the relative charge noise for a system under the barrier control not only is smaller than that for the tilt control, but actually decreases as a function of an increasing exchange interaction. This is understood as a combined consequence of the greatly suppressed detuning noise when the two dots are symmetrically operated, as well as an enhancement of the inter-dot hopping energy of an electron when the barrier is lowered which in turn reduces the relative charge noise at large exchange interaction values. We have also studied the response of the qubit to charged impurities at different locations, and found that the improvement of barrier control is least for impurities equidistant from the two dots due to the small detuning noise they cause, but is otherwise significant along other directions., Comment: 9+ pages, 7 figures

A triple-quantum-dot system can be operated as either an exchange-only qubit or a resonant-exchange qubit. While it is generally believed that the decisive advantage of the resonant-exchange qubit is the suppression of charge noise because it is operated at a sweet spot, we show that the leakage is also an important factor. Through molecular-orbital-theoretic calculations, we show that when the system is operated in the exchange-only scheme, the leakage to states with double electron occupancy in quantum dots is severe when rotations around the axis 120$^\circ$ from $\hat{z}$ is performed. While this leakage can be reduced by either shrinking the dots or separating them further, the exchange interactions are also suppressed at the same time, making the gate operations unfavorably slow. When the system is operated as a resonant-exchange qubit, the leakage is 3-5 orders of magnitude smaller. We have also calculated the optimal detuning point which minimizes the leakage for the resonant-exchange qubit, and have found that although it does not coincide with the double-sweet-spot for the charge noise, they are rather close. Our results suggest that the resonant-exchange qubit has another advantage that leakage can be greatly suppressed compared to the exchange-only qubit, and operating at the double-sweet-spot point should be optimal both for reducing charge noise and suppressing leakage., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures
